For The Record 8.2.09: Michael Cole on Raw
Posted by Kristopher Rodriguez on 08.02.2009

Michael Cole is often criticized by the IWC and other general fans. They think he's a buffoon who has no idea what he's doing. Those people couldn't be farther from the truth.

Before he became an on-screen WWE personality in 1997, he was a reporter for CBS Radio. During that time he covered the presidential campaigns of Michael Dukakis, Bill Clinton, Steve Forbes, and Bob Dole. He also spent time in the mid-90s covering the Yugoslavian War and the bombing of a Federal building in Oklahoma City. Cole was a true journalist before entering WWE and thus a credible broadcaster. On the radio, one must create a narrative for the listening audience. In wrestling, a commentator's job is also to establish a narrative. Cole had transferable skills upon arrival. Unfortunately, he was not a full-time commentator right off the bat.

In his early WWE days, Cole was essentially a Todd Pettengill replacement. And that was problematic. Pettengill was an entertaining backstage interviewer for WWE in the mid 90s. Besides conducting interviews on TV and pay-per-views, he also hosted Livewire and Action Zone. On top of all that, he was an effective merchandise pitchman. Pettengill always kept things light, and was pretty well-accepted by the wrestling audience. However, he parted ways with WWE after SummerSlam 1997. Michael Cole entered the scene soon thereafter. Cole didn't have Pettengill's understated charisma, sense of humor, or sense of timing. To use a wrestling term, he was green. But worse than that, he got bullied around.

The original Michaels/Triple H version of DX bullied Cole around on-screen. There was one interview in particular in late 1997 or 1998 when they pulled pranks on Cole for an entire in-ring interview. Situations like that made it difficult for fans to take Cole seriously.

There was also the time in 1999 when Jim Ross delivered a low blow to Michael Cole. It was all part of the Jim Ross/Bell's Palsy angle. After the effects of Bell's Palsy were visible to WWE's brass, Ross was taken off TV. Michael Cole served as Ross' temporary replacement, much to the chagrin of Ross. So one night Jim Ross called Cole into the ring, berated him, and gave him a low blow. After Cole was hit, he simply sold the injury and retreated to the backstage area. Situations like that did not exactly put Cole in the brightest light. Mean Gene Okerlund would have fought back. He would have threatened to get his lawyers after Ross. Cole did nothing of the sort.

Cole's fortunes turned for the better later that year. Smackdown became a weekly two-hour broadcast and Cole was chosen to be the play-by-play commentator. His work with Jerry Lawler was decent. I will admit, his voice was a bit annoying at times. I think he spoke too much and a bit too loudly at some points, but his performances were passable. But Cole really hit his stride when he teamed with Tazz. Working with Tazz must have been a little different for Cole. Cole was the most senior member of that broadcast team. He was the one with more big match experience. He seemed to gain confidence when Tazz joined him in the booth. After a few years, I would even argue that they became superior to Ross and Lawler as a broadcast duo.

In 2006, JBL replaced Tazz in the booth. Together, Cole and JBL formed one of the top five best commentating teams I've ever heard. JBL was a classic heel commentator. We don't hear that sort of style anymore. Cole contrasted JBL's uber-heel approach perfectly. They made the Smackdown years of 2006 and 2007 palatable. Now that is an accomplishment to say the least!

I went from hearing one of the best broadcast teams of all time to the worst. In early 2008, Jonathan Coachman replaced JBL. That combo was just plain awful. We as fans were lucky though. At least Coachman was around during a well-booked Edge/Undertaker feud. A combination of horrible wrestling programming and a Cole/Coachman broadcasting combo would have made Smackdown nearly impossible to watch.

The WWE commentating situation was somewhat in a state of disarray until the June 2008 WWE Draft. On that night, Jim Ross and Michael Cole switched seats. Cole became the permanent play-by-play commentator of Monday Night Raw. He now holds the most coveted broadcasting position in the wrestling world. But with an increased audience and increased exposure comes increased scrutiny.

Cole now sits alongside Jerry "The King" Lawler, on live TV, on cable's most watched station. How is he doing? In my view, he's doing quite well. I would first of all say that he was wise to shave his goatee. Those who "host" Raw should be cleanly shaven. His voice also seems a bit lower than it used to be. He's not as loud and annoying as before. Most importantly, Cole is better at shutting up when necessary. We as fans don't need the commentators talking every second. We get what's going on. Sometimes we like to simply hear the sounds of the ring and arena. Of course, that's a little easier to do with HD. But you get the idea.

Cole seems a lot more confident in his role. I guess that's what twelve years of experience will do for a broadcaster. He's grown into his role, become a bit more distinguished, and will probably occupy that chair for many years to come. Cole has come a long way since 1997 to say the least.

Closing Time

That's it for this week. Below, Jim Ross shakes Michael Cole's hand as Raw changes voices.

Sorry Kris, but I have to strongly disagree. I don't hate Cole and I thought he did a superb job on SD!, but the man has quite frankly sucked in his role on RAW. I don't know if it's the weather, VKM on his ass, or his lack of enthusiasm, but he seems void of emotion and more robotic than ever on Raw. I don't know why because he was great on SD!, but I know that I'm certainly not a fan. you're entitled to your opinion though and as usual great column with some damn good points. Keep up the awesome work.

I remember the Smackdown tapings I attented in Pittsburgh in 2001, it was the one where Kurt Angle beat Booker T for the WCW Title. Before the tapings started, the announcers made their way down to ringside, and when Michael Cole appeared from the curtain there was a whole arena of people booing him like no one else got booed that night. He just walked down to the table without acknowledging it.
Eight years later, Cole has gone from being a very noticeably bad commentator to actually becoming one of the better ones out there, which leads me to believe that at least he takes the sport and his job seriously and has worked on improving. He has gotten better, and honestly, look at the actual wrestlers out there that haven't even done that.

Is Michael Cole a complete douchebag in real life? I would say he most likely IS. But he is no longer the worse commentator that has ever lived.

I do not understand the Cole hate. I would rather listen to him than JR any day of the week. JR screws up and inverts names and moves more than anyone announcing today, but everyone around him worships him out of respect for tradition or because he screams a lot.

JR is a gimmick announcer that screams and in no way works well with another guy. He cant banter at all and says the same crap constantly.

Also, Michael Cole actually seems to like the fans, instead of bashing them every chance he gets.

Cole is horrible. His laugh is annoying as hell and it takes away form a match. I don't find his announcing style to be be fun to listen to. He doesn't enhance a match with his calls. Also he uses the Coleisms like vintage whoever.

Where the other JR video go

Posted By: Guest#8515 (Guest)  on August 02, 2009 at 02:33 AM

ummmmmm, no. first off, while 12 years might give you experience, it doesn't equate to added natural talent. put adamle on wwe tv for 12 years and while he might deliver lines a little smoother, he's still not going to have "it". the fact is wwe has become lazy all around, booking and with their commentary. Whatever happened to a good heel on the headset. If anything helps assist the "story-telling" aspect of the show, its 2 differing opinions on each mic, its the face play by play being ashamed and amazed at his partner's view. Cole has never been liked by the masses, that's a fact, so why fight this? make cole a heel play-by-play guy, have him shoot a promo going off on the lack of respect he's gotten after all these years, slap lawler in the face, and go from there. just mix it up a little please...

When this first happened, I was irate. JR was the voice of RAW forever and Cole was SD. To not tell JR (I don't think Cole knew either) was BS. JR has put up with a lot from Vince and WWE. However, I believe Michael Cole and The King are doing pretty good together, while JR has been paired with 2 talents that left for TNA. After that, T Grish joined the table and now JR is in a totally different role, which he seems to like, but does not come off that great on TV.

Michael Cole has paid his dues for sure, but like he said, he had called every SD for 10 years (but 2). That is pretty damn good in this business.

Cole has regressed in recent years. What you call "more distinguished", I'd call "could give two shits". This man sucks, and will never be in the same league as JR. I dare say he's not even in Tony Schiavone's league. Long gone are the glory days of Gorilla, Jesse the Body, and Vince. JR is the only viable announcer in the WWE, with Striker being the best color man. They should give someone new a shot, someone who isn't so dry.

"Those who "host" raw should be clean shaven"..is unnecessary. If JR has a full beard it wouldnt make any difference. Mick Foley did fine and would be still be the best commentator, second to JR if he hadn't ran away from nasty Vince McRoid.

I'm sick of these articles on 411 that seem to wilfully ignore any kind of reality simply to stir up controversy/page hits/comments.

Michael Cole has been terrible on Raw, when he's not calling moves wrong or using the same five phrases he's at best insincere/unfunny.

I thought he did actually improve a few years back when he was working on Smackdown with Tazz and I think they were the best partnership since JR/King in the old days.

As for 'Those who "host" Raw should be cleanly shaven', what? WHAT? Never trust a man who spells Chris with a K.

It's not easy for anybody to sound good along side Lawler.

Lawler is awful. I really wish the WWE would get rid of him.

Good article, though you forgot the brief but enjoyable Cole/Foley commentary.

I couldn't disagree more with this. I absolutely HATE Michael Cole he has a ridiculously annoying voice and never had that 'big match' sound to him like JR which should be a basic requirement for Raw.

Also he lacks any kind of quick wit and generally is so false in his delivery in pretty much everything he says... seriously his false laughter is just plain horrible on Raw every week... laughing at Chavo/Hornswoggle matches makes me cringe so much.

Cole is just not a likable person and I think a commentator should have likeable elements. Honestly the only time I enjoyed the guy is when the Rock would verbally berate him on a weekly basis.

He is the most horrible announcer of this generation.

Striker, Josh Matthews and even Todd Grisham are coming on leaps and bounds and all of them are far more 'likeable' and less annoying than Cole.

Has anybody else realized he's gained like 50 pounds since debuting? It's not like hes a porker now, it's just that he was like a dehydrated ethiopian man back in the day.

VINTAGE BOB DOLE!

Screw Michael Cole, he is horrible and I will never find his commentary passable. Every time I hear his voice I wonder why I'm even a wrestling fan.

To say he is a decent replacement for JR is an insult of the highest degree.

Have you seen the shit on raw he's told to laugh at lately. He cant just sit there and act bored to tears at the Chavo/Hornswoggle shit or he'd be out of a job. Hence the shitty fake laugh.

The fact that your even defending this untalented piece of trash says you know nothing about wrestling. Michael Cole might be the single worst announcer ive ever heard and ive been watching wrestling for over 20 years. There isnt one night where im watching raw where i dont cringe at least twice because of some gay ass comment he makes. No man comes off more cheesy and corny than Michael Cole. He is a dipshit who should have been fired years ago. The call he made when Mick Foley won the title in 1999 when JR was sick was the worst call ive ever heard in a big moment. Not to mention the vintage line he drops 68 times a night on raw. Vintage Miz!!! or some other wrestler whos too young to ever be considered vintage. People can say what they want about JR but that man knows how to put people over and how to call a big moment. Michael Cole is an assclown and should be kicked to the curb along with his faggot partner jerry the queer lawler. Cause lawler has takin a turn for the worst in the last few years. Ill take grisham JR striker or josh matthews over these two assholes anyday

"Michael Cole has been terrible on Raw, when he's not calling moves wrong or using the same five phrases he's at best insincere/unfunny."

You could replace Michael Cole's name with JR and that assessment would be just as true.

Posted By: Guest#7326 (Guest)  on August 03, 2009 at 12:33 AM

When you screw with something that people are "comfortable" with you can't get them to like it for awhile. I remember when Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton debuted their new theme music, everyone went nuts saying it sucked. Eventually everyone decided they liked them both.

Maybe Cole will become excepted, maybe not... but just as no one could replace Gordon Solie, no one is gonna fill JR's shoes. He called all the great WWF/E matches for the better part of 10 years and won't be easily forgotten in that role. He defined announcing for a generation just as Solie did. But even JR couldn't call it solo the way Gordon did. That man made wrestling seem legit. He was the Pat Summerall of pro wrestling!

This is the dumbest thing I have ever read on this website, and that includes the comments section. Can anyone else figure out how this makes any sense?

Posted By: ishbukid (Guest)  on August 03, 2009 at 08:20 AM

The columnist and the people defending Cole in the comments are obviously doing it to be contrarians or to troll.

That's the only way to explain anyone defending Michael Cole for his shit job at announcing.

You all know the guy is the worst long-term commentator in the history of WWF/WWE. Worse than Todd Pettingill. Worse than Sean Mooney. Worse than Lord Alfred Hayes.

He hasn't improved one bit since debuting nearly 12 years ago. He has negative passion for the business and would leave tomorrow if a half-decent news station made him an offer and he'd be able to return to real journalism.

Leave it to the IWC to rip on Jim Ross who clearly isn't what he once was, but drunk, sleeping, or comatose is still worlds better than Cole could ever dream of.

Grisham, Matthews, and Striker are all better than Cole. Hell, they're all better than Lawler. I would rather Lawler got the hell out of town first, to be honest. I'm so tired of him it's unreal. Watching him defeat Kendrick really irked me.

I actually like JR better now than I did back in the day when he shouted like a blithering idiot. I dont post good things about Cole to troll, I mean them. I dig Cole.

All you JR worshipers should follow his blog and read the venom he has for you. The man hates the fans, thinks only people in the business can critique it, and cannot enhance another announcer for anything.

I dont bash him bc hes down, I like him better now. He is still not very good though.

It has seemed to me that the only time Michael Cole is any good is when he has an extremely talented color commentator, preferably heel leaning to work with. JBL carried the Smackdown broadcasts for two years. Tazz and Cole had an interesting sort of chemistry. However, Cole and Lawler don't. Jerry is oftentimes just as bad as Cole. The Raw team is really bad. I long for the days of JBL as a commentator. Hell, I'd rather have the other two commentary teams over Cole and Jerry.

Posted By: Lawrence (Guest)  on August 03, 2009 at 04:56 PM

I am NOT a fan of Michael Cole by any stretch of the imagination, but, I will give the man credit, he has worked hard to get where he is today.

Does Cole deserve to be on Raw?

Yes and no.

He deserves to be on Raw only because Raw is such an horrible circus of a show that is barely watchable and has been for the past 5 years and only seems to be going down hill in a hurry with each attempt every week. It's not an entertaining show to wrestling fans. It's not an entertaining show to whoever the hell Vince is trying to aim Raw to. So, Cole is the perfect fit for the clusterf--k that Raw and its celebrity hosts and the HHH Show has become. Lawler, sadly, has become a perfect fit for Raw has well.

Believe it or not, I'm not trying to completely crap on Cole, but, I think Raw is better suited for his style. Quite frankly, it they kept Jim Ross on Raw, it'd be an embarassment for Ross. He'd be wasted.

Smackdown is a much more satisfying show to watch for wrestling fans. If WWE would only stop dicking around with Ross and make him the top play-by-play guy as opposed to whatever the hell his new role is supposed to be, the commentary of Smackdown and it's wrestling intense format would be greatly improved. But, WWE's micro-managing ways continues to make things worse, not better, for its universe.

But, back to Cole... he's taken a LOT of abuse from the IWC, and, I somewhat agree with this article... a lot of it is not justified.

He can't do anything about his voice, but, how it's inflected he can woprk on it. Whether or not he's willing, that's another thing. He's gotten away with whatever he's been doing for close to 15 years, he ain't gonna have the motivation to change now.

My biggest problem with Cole has always been that he's too forced and too robotic and he can't act his way out of a wet paper bag.

He probably sounds too forced because he's probably being yelled at by Vince in his headset as to what to say and how to say it. Vince's commentary was much the same, but, he knew what he wanted to push and how to say it... Cole is being TOLD what to say and how to say it... he's a puppet. It's tough. If he were only written notes with bullet points of what to push, I can't help but think he'd be a little smoother. A little.

As mentioned here, at heart, the guy is a news guy. "Newsies" by nature usually have a stick up their butts and tend to be stiff. How or why Cole got into a "flamboyent" business like pro-wrestling is beyond me. Could you imagine Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw or even the late Walter Cronkite doing play by play for WWE? Not saying Cole is anywhere in THEIR league, but, it proves my point. He's in a little over his head.

Those who hate JR are the same type who hated latter day Madden, people with no sense of history. Yes, both came to rely overly on catchphrases and hyperbole. Go back and watch JR in the UWF or in WCW. He was the best ever and changed how announcers call professional wrestling. Madden did the same thing with pro football. People need to look at the entire scope of someone's career rather than just at the ass end.

Posted By: Iron Knee (Guest)  on August 03, 2009 at 08:54 PM

Neil: Beautifully done.

It's a nice way to say what anybody with half a brain cell is thinking: Michael Cole always has sucked a bag of rancid horse cocks - and always will.

I'll never get over him ruining two fantastic RAW moments in the history of the WWF: Foley winning his first WWF title "Mankind did it...Mick Foley did it." (douchechilling) and Austin dousing Rock & Vince with beer the week before WMXV ("Austin's commandeering a beer truck! He's giving the Corporation a beer bath! HAHAHAHAHA..." (forced laughter continues uncomfortably) JR was never missed more than either instance, and the history of WWE was sullied forever.

Posted By: Brad B (Guest)  on August 04, 2009 at 12:25 AM

Don't forget, Iron Knee, JR is doing exactly what Vince wants him to do.

I'm just guessing here, but I'm sure if you sat down with JR at a BBQ in a totally off-the-record conversation, he'd tell you that he hates the way commentary has gone. I'm sure Ross would love to go back to the way it was back in the UWF days. The passion is still in Good 'Ol JR... he's just not allowed to go "the zone" anymore.

For whatever reason, Vince wants to dumb-down WWE's commentary and is aiming towards more of the "telling the story" approach rather than calling "move for move."

My theory is that this "telling the story" nonsense is more to protect future (and maybe some present) announcers who know nothing about wrestling -- BUT -- look mighty pretty on camera. "tee hee!"

You can't have Ross out there who actually knows what he's doing raising the bar waaaay too high calling move for move when Brandi Big Boobs (that's Brandi with an "I"! Tee hee!) doing play-by-play on Raw who has no idea what a wrist lock is, but can tell a "weal good story on her iPhone! Tee Hee!" during the 10,000th meeting of Randy Orton & Triple H 5 years from now.

Vince has made it clear, and quite often, that he hates have JR on WWE TV... but JR is too good at what he does and there would be a backlash if he were fired outright just because he has a face for radio. Bells Palsey advocates would go ape on WWE because that would be considered by some as discrimination. All those WWE promos how they support various charities around the world and other organizations of their kind would take a hit.

JR knows that Vince is just looking for ANY... ANY reason to fire him. Vince has done some really crappy things to JR probably hoping JR would just quit or get angry enough to do something stupid that would warrant termination... but JR just plays the game and is able to hang around.

That's why we don't see JR disobeying his boss on TV by going back to the old UWF style commentary that I'm sure JR would love to return to.

But, instead, what we're hearing today is JR doing exactly what Vince wants. In a sense, it's really not JR... just Vince being channeled through JR.

Michael Cole's annoucning is servicable. I wouldn't rank his announcing up there with the likes of legendary announcers like Jim Ross, Gorilla Monsoon, Gordon Solie, Jesse Ventura, Bobby Heenan and Lord Alfred Hayes. I enjoyed Michael Cole's announcing more when he was on Smackdown. His announcing on Raw along with the chemistry he has with Jerry Lawler, if you can even call it chemistry, is marginal at best. The only thing that drags down the quality of his announcing is Jerry Lawler. If he had a better announcer to play off of, Raw would be better overall.
