Ask 411 Wrestling 08.12.09: King Kong Bundy, Famous 411 Readers and Randy Orton's Douchbaggery!
Posted by Mathew Sforcina on 08.12.2009

Hello all, and welcome back to your regularly scheduled Ask 411 Wrestling column. Big ups, or whatever the correct term is, for Ryan stepping in at somewhat short notice and doing last week's column.

I won't bore/nauseate you, dear reader, with the specifics, but suffice to say I was in no state to do a column last week, although it cleared up fairly quickly, so don't feel too badly for me.

Let's see, anything else for me to cover?

Noooooope.

Bannery Goodness Time!

Backtalking

Will not be seen this week since I wasn't here last week and I don't like talking badly/apologizing for other people. Sorry Ron.

Your Turn, Smart Guy…

So, the question from last week was…

Who am I? A World Champion in multiple companies, I'm a much loved Pro Wrestler who's tended to stick to one alignment for most of my career. I've been involved in many famous moments in the sport, some involving different companies, some involving chair shots and some involving blindness. I have had, as of this point, 15 different WWE title reigns. I've been involved with multiple women on air, although I'm married to one of them in real life. Some have tried to lure me to the dark side, others beat me into submission, and yet others just want me to hurt for what I did as a child. And I'm the only man to hold a certain title in two companies. Who am I?

The Answer? Click Here For It.

This week's question:

What show am I? I am a North American PPV event, somewhat famous. The brand name I was an edition of no longer exists as a PPV. I featured a title change, and a title retention, despite two more singles champions and a set of tag team champions having matches that were not for those belts. Someone won two matches by Submission in the same night, while the title change was by a non-usual means of victory (even before you take into account the outside interference). You saw ‘two' companies wrestling (the hosts and a tag team from another), an inanimate object wrestling, and Chyna being a part of two straight matches without having a match herself. A show with a Match Of The Year in it, I am… What?

Questions, Questions, Who's Got The Questions?

Let's see if I remember how to do this.

First cab off the ranks to get driven recklessly by Zeus (Yes, I am enjoying my new Die Hard Collection, thank you), is Anthler.

Hey Sforcina, still loving the column.
Just have a couple PURO questions for you.
1. Has Mitsuharu Misawa (RIP) ever fought Keiji Mutoh/Great Muta in a singles match? I recall there being a tag match, but never a singles match.

See, I can answer these sorts of questions too. I just know my limits.

The tag match you mention was Mitsuharu Misawa teaming with Yoshinari Ogawa to take on Keiji Mutoh and Taiyo Kea on 10th of July 2004.

As for a singles match, none ever took place. Basically, they both knew how much attention and expectations such a dream match would have, and they knew that by the time it was possible for them to fight, in 2004, they were too broken down to do the match justice. Had they been up to it, the tag match would have been a single's match, and Mutoh would almost certainly had put Misawa over.

2. The Shining Wizard seems to be a widely used move in both Puro and American Indy promotions as both finishers and specialty moves, but i do not think i have ever seen it utilized in the WWF or TNA. Has anyone used a 'proper' shining wizard (opponent on one knee, performer steps up on the knee and delivers their own knee to the opponent's head) in either of these two promotions? (not counting Greg Helms (not a real shining wizard) or MVP(shining kenka kick))

Well, if you're going to DQ Helms, then no, no-one has. Although it's certainly common enough in the Video Games.

3. if the answer to 2. is no, then is the Shining Wizard 'banned' in the WWE universe? and for what reasons?

If you can answer those, that'd be awesome. Ask411 RULES!

It's not on ‘the list', since ‘the list' is fairly small. In actually ‘the list' is more a concept than an actual list.

Basically any move that has potential to severely screw up someone's neck and/or back is banned unless the person who wants to use it can prove they can do it safely. Hence, no move is straight out flat out never ever banned, just that if you want to use it, you have to prove you can do it well on command. Hence overly complicated moves off the top rope are nominally banned unless the guy proves he can do it well after requesting permission. Pandas Evan Bourne asked to be allowed to do the SSP, and proved to the higher ups he could do it as will. Paul London just went out and did it.

So, theoretically, you could see someone using Burning Hammers and Cop Killas if they could prove they could do them safely. Hence the Shining Wizard is probably one of the moves that whoever wanted to use it would need to prove themselves with. I mean, it's a fairly risky thing, a full bore straight up knee as it is. And WWE won't even let anyone sit down in bendy holds due to the bad backs of lots of people (and yet they let them use Spinebusters all the time…)

So the short answer is ‘Kinda'.

Of course he's here again. Manu!

what music did Dusty and Sapphire come out to the ring to at WM 6?

Because on the randy savage dvd, its some generic crap, and not Dusty's themesong, "Common Man". I was looking forward to that little piece of wrestlecrap! and I would assume WWE owned the rights to that song, so its not like all the other instances where they replaced music because they didn't want to pay for it.

Actually, that was the actual music they played. They did not use the Common Man music. They actually used that dancey music, I assume that it was meant to be Sapphire's theme music, since unlike Savage's music, Common Man was a little too specific to Dusty, what with it's lyrics. But hey, This Video was posted a few months before the DVD set came out. Although I will agree that Fink's introduction does sound dubbed. But nope, that's what they came out to.

Another familiar name, Rob S asks two questions, one I can't answer with certainty, the other I can.

I was wondering if you knew who the highest paid wrestler at any given point was? Guys like Hogan, Rock and Stone Cold come to mind, but for example was there ever a wrestler making like $10 million a year in salary or more during a few year stretch? Also, I was wondering, typically, what top guys in WWE, mid card guys and lower guys made roughly. Is it in the millions? hundred thousands? I know wrestlers probably don't make anywhere near what baseball/football/basketball players make, but I was just wondering.

Obviously I can't tell you specifics. There was a list of 2004-2006 which was never officially denied or confirmed for obvious reasons, but the numbers did seem legit.

Roughly, the main event guys earn from a bit under a million to almost 2 million dollars, depending on who they are and, more importantly, how much merch they move. Mid cards might match 200-400 thousand, and the lower guys/divas might pull $100K.

But the pay scale is hardly a smooth line. Your salary (if the WWE has it's way) is mostly dependant on your PPV appearances and your merch sales. So someone like Matt Hardy will draw more money then say Jack Swagger simply because Matt gets a cut of all the Hardy Boys merchandise, and Jeff Hardy would get a HUGE payday from all his merch. And if you get onto Wrestlemania in a high profile match, you might double your pay in a single night, or at the very least get a very nice bonus (Bobby Lashley for example got, by his own admission, $250K for his match against Umaga, which he felt he should have gotten more for).

$10 Million a year? Not for any extended period of time. Austin and Rock might have hit something near that at their absolute peak, and Hogan may have cracked that (Wrestlemania V, by some reports, had him get a payoff of several million). During the peak of his feud with Orndorff, for example, he was getting $10,000 a night for the matches. But I honestly doubt that anyone not named McMahon can claim they got anything close to $10,000,000 for one year, let alone for an extended period of time.

I was wondering how many different models of Hell In a Cell have there been? Do they like rebuild it every couple years, or is it generally the original one from 1997 but modified over the years? Also, where would the WWE store such a thing when it's not being used? Also, are the statistics about the Cell that the WWE gives accurate, or is it greatly exaggerated like sometimes ladders and steel cages are?

There have been two Cells, in terms of the build and model (three if you REALLY want to get picky). The first one, built for HBK vs. The Undertaker at Badd Blood, lasted from 97 through to 2005, Taker beating Orton at Armageddon being it's last appearance. At the next HITC match, DX vs. The McMahons & Big Show, the second Cell made it's debut.

If you wish to get picky, then you can argue that there was a ‘significant' design change at, I believe, No Way Out 2000 when they added in gaps in the Cell wall to allow for climbing the walls. (The exact change is hard to pin down. It was probably done prior to the 6 Man Cell, and it was definitely done by the time they did HHH/Jericho. But the exact match that saw the introduction is impossible to pin down.)

The specifics of the cell given (The current one being 20 feet tall and 5+ tons, the old one 16 and 2+) is almost certainly correct, in that there is no evidence to the contrary. The heights are certainly true, you can tell.

And the cell folds down neatly into panels, which are stored in the WWE warehouses, almost certainly in Connecticut. After all, the thing is made up on panels so it's not that hard to store.

Before we move on, quick point: Wouldn't the new Cell make a perfect container for a Wargames match?

Mike has a simple question.

Hey, I just was wondering if you could give a bit of a career history on
King Kong Bundy. I know what he did at the first three Wrestlemanias, and
then that he came back as part of the Million Dollar Corporation, but where
the heck did he come from before Wrestlemania, and what was he doing between
Wrestlemanias and before he came back in the '90s? He has to be the
Wrestlemania main eventer that I know the least about.

With pleasure Mike.

King Kong Bundy began his career as a face, "Big Daddy Bundy" in World Class, long before this would imply he would be accompanied by young girls miles underwater. No, he began as a friendly, happy go lucky country bumpkin type, with overalls and a rope belt, with a full head of hair. But after he got into a dispute with the Von Erichs, he became King Kong Bundy, putting on the infamous black trunks and soon getting his familr haircut after losing his hair to the Von Erichs.

Bundy held the WCCW's top belt, but after a while (and perhaps the single biggest dick move ever done by a promoter just to put himself over), Bundy left WCCW. He wrestled in the AWA, and the NWA, mostly as a heel (although Jake Roberts brought him into Georgia as a face in a brilliant angle). He then toured Mid South, were Bill Watts chalked up another winner (of several, to give the man his due), and gave him the "Count to 5" gimmick.

Eventually, while he was touring the States and Japan, he met Hulk Hogan, who encouraged him to call Vince. Soon after, he debuted in the WWF, managed by Jimmy Hart. He teamed with Big John Studd, soon joined the Heenan Family, main evented WM2, then had some short feuds with Jake Roberts, Kamala and so on. He left the WWF in 88, spending the last few months in 87 putting over Bam Bam Bigelow.

Studd then tried for Hollywood, getting a few bit parts but not really achieving much beyond a recurring role on ‘Married… With Children'. He popped up in ECW in late 1993, and was then rehired by the WWF to join the Million Dollar Corporation. After this shortish stint, he moved into the indys, opening a training school, trying his hand at Stand Up, and basically now lives the life most 80's Wrestling Stars have if they aren't dead or were superstars.

Clyde asks about a technically.

Hey, long time reader, occasional poster, all that fine stuff...

If, in Wrestlemania IV, George Steele never entered the ring, how was he considered out of the Battle Royal? Couldnt he, as I believe it was Jesse said, come back in at the end, and be considered the winner?

Is there any mention anywhere of him not entering the ring AND not winning because of such?

Maybe. This came up from last week's feedback, actually, the lack of consistency. Certainly people have come in at the last second to win Battle Royals (Ted DiBiase at the Raw 15th Anniversary for example), so had Steele come back in and tossed Hart and/or Brown, he could have won. However, WWF held several battle royals in the weeks leading up to Wrestlemania, and in at least one of them, Steele did the same thing, he never got in the ring and walked off.

So you're left with the catch all fix it, "Referee's Discretion". It was never addressed, but it's easy to state that since he did it before, the referee's decreed that when he walked off, he was forfeiting his entry. After all, it wasn't like he was a slimy despicable heel trying to win, he was insane.

Weak, yes, but it's the best we got.

Steve wants to know who didn't turn up.

These two questions come from interviews by wrestlers hyping Wrestlemania III, during the February 1987 Wrestling Challenge (courtesy of the Name on the Marquee article):

The Can-Am Connection will face Muraco & Orton, and the Can-Ams may have "a possible surprise guest" in their corner. Didn't happen. Hey, rumor experts, who was it gonna be?

Hulk Hogan will have "a possible surprise guest" in his corner when he faces Andre the Giant. Didn't happen. Who was it?

Thanks for any insight.

Wrestlemania III seems to have lots of celebs pull out. Samantha Fox pulled out/broke down negotiations over being the woman to present the crown of the Race/JYD match as well.

The only name I found floated to be the guy who was meant to be in Hogan's corner is Brian Bosworth, who at the time was the highest paid rookie/player in the NFL, having been the first draft pick and the hot young thing in the sport, albeit a controversial guy. He got drafted, then sued the NFL to be allowed to use his College number, a lawsuit he lost.

Certainly he seems like the kind of guy Vince would love, and he was involved with the XFL, so it's logical, but I got no idea why, if it was meant to be him, it fell through.

And to be in the corner for Zenk and Martel? Got nothing, which probably what McMahon had as well. Wrestlemania III was shaping up to be a huge event, and McMahon probably had them say that on the off chance he found a spare celeb he could give them.

Sounds silly, but it's probably what happened…

Normally, I put comedy here. But not this week. For this week, I bring you an ad from my fair shores. I bring you this ad because there's a devlishily handsome man, a stud of a guy in the blue mask, who clearly is the star of the ad, making it his own. I feel the need to share this Oscar-Deserving performance from this Mystery Man to you, my fair readers.

From self-publicy to publicity for the site, thanks to Rob

So hey man, it's been awhile but I got one for ya. With all this Mick Foley acknowledging the website business lately (or whenever this gets posted) it got me wondering, how many known wrestlers check out this site? I know I've heard Matt Hardy and (The Biggest CHUD in all of Pro Wrestling) Matt Morgan read the site, but is there any others that are known, I'm just curious thanks!

We don't know, given that for the most part big name guys don't tend to advertise when and where they go online for fear of being swamped (although the really cool ones like Colt Cabana, once found, set up AIM names to chat with fans).

Confirmed, 100% legit known Big Name Pro Wrestlers (since guys like me don't count in this question) who have at one point read 411 are:

Mick Foley: We know this because he (mis)named us, since he disliked the negativity from the Commentators.

Matt Hardy: After the infamous Split in 04, 411 needed writers, fast. This resulted in several good, solid hires, and a couple of less so hires, one of which was the rather stupidly named ‘Asteroid Boy'. Not that that's a bad name, but for a columnist…

Regardless, thanks to him putting up a controversial but in retrospect dead on opinion column equating Lita with a Credit Card, we found out that Matt Hardy read/s 411.

Traci Brooks: The seemingly soon-to-be Playboy Cover Girl contacted the site, I believe, and ended up getting interviewed by Steve Cook out of it.

D'Lo Brown: In his recent interview with the site, he mentioned stuff we had done, so he reads us.

And we do have some people who claimed they were legit when they contacted various peoples, people like Sherri Martel, Tank Toland and so on. But those 4 are the big names we know for sure.

Did I leave out anyone?

Dale crosses the border, between this and the opinion section.

I just got done watching the Viva La Raza DVD that came out a while ago, and the WCW announcing killed me. I never watched WCW when it was running, so this DVD is some of my limited experience with the company. Their announcing is just ridiculous. If a match was ten minutes long they spent about thirty seconds calling the action, and the rest of the time was talking about the nWo, or hyping themselves in a way that sounds like calling a match but isn't (like when they'd talk about fast pace intense matches instead of just calling the one that was going on). Did they really think this was a smart move?

Well, I don't know the announcers' opinion, but I know Eric Bischoff loved it. He was the guy in their ear after all. Which is a shame, because Fat Tony was actually a pretty damm good PBP guy, but once Eric got in his ear, he was gone.

You have to remember with announcers, that their boss is always in their ear. So they commentated in that style because they were told to. Bischoff seemed to think that the action would speak for itself, you had to hype the angles. So pretty similar to Vince's current opinions.

I've liked some of the DVD's that have come out recently, but why hasn't Jericho gotten one? Edge's was great and all, but he's been there a decade and Jericho has wrestled what, almost two decades?

Jericho took a break for a bit, which pushed his back, and then you have to deal with the fact that a solid chunk of his career you have to gloss over due to the fact that he was wrestling Benoit.

He did have one soon after his debut, but yes, it's long overdue. But it will be done, eventually. The fanbase is there, and there's still a lot to choose from, even after deleting all the Benoit stuff. And his name was on the list that was floated a while back. So maybe once he turns face again, it'll come out, and it will rock.

But only if they include all the WCW promos against Goldberg and Malenko.

John From Ireland has a question about Al Snow in ECW.

Love the column and its useful information, for years I've heard that Al Snow at Wrestlepalooza 1998 was supposed to win the ECW championship, but was called up to the WWE roster the day before. Firstly, is this true? Secondly, if he was supposed to win the championship, why did the 'E not let him get the belt for at least a short reign rather than calling him back right at the moment of (what in retrospect) would have (arguably) have been his career highlight?

Well, the time frame does fit, in that Snow's ECW title match was at the start of May, and by the end of May he was back in the WWF. And I found a couple of sources that said he was recalled back up just prior to that point. However, he did wrestle on a few shows after Wrestlepalooza, and none of the sources are reliable, so it's sketchy.

As for why they'd do such a thing, there's two possibilities.

One, WWF would have been quite happy for him to win the belt and then drop it to Bam Bam or someone, but Paul Heyman switched the booking around, not wanting to put the belt on a guy who was about to leave.

Two, WWF didn't want him as champ for the same reason that they called him back up: He was over. They only sent him to ECW because he asked and asked, and they had nothing for him. He was a jobber to them, and thus eventually they let him go to ECW so that they didn't have to pay him, and they waited to see if he somehow catched on. And he did, so they brought him back. And while the WWF had a cosy relationship with ECW, they still at times hire people not to help their own product but to hurt the other guy, like with Gail. So they brought him back to just make sure Heyman didn't get TOO popular…

Wrestling Weirdo asks about guys touching… Well, you read it.

Sup man, Wrestling Weirdo here, got a weird question for ya. How common is it for wrestlers to inadvertently touch each others junk in a match? I was wondering while watching the Cena/Big Show match from Trump Raw, when Big Show scooped up Cena for a slam and it looked like Cena might have accidentally placed his hand on Little-Big Show. I'm pretty sure every WWE wrestler that ever wrestled The Ultimate Warrior were probably "groped" during Warrior's overhead press slam. Also, do wrestlers wear cups when they wrestle?

No, Wrestlers do not wear cups unless it's part of the storyline, if they are managers, wimps, or wrestling Chyna. Although I suppose in some medical conditions you might find one wearing one just to be safe.

And as a guy who uses bodyslams, fall aways, and other such moves, it happens. You rarely get a grip on the other guy's junk, given the properties of lyrca and lots of layers and such, but certainly it's hard to avoid ‘touching' it while you wrestle. You don't really think about it, you just do it. Excessive touching will raise eyebrows, but for the most part you just get on with the match and ignore it. It's not like you'll catch the gay or anything.

neverAcquiesce, another familiar name, asks about hair.

Bret Hart mentions in his book the Scott Hall had his ponytail chopped off as payback for a rib. Is there any video evidence to support this, cos I don't recall Razor Ramon showing up with suddenly with drastically shorter hair.

Having not read the book (BOO, HISS!), I can't rightly say, since I have no time frame to work on. Anyone out there remember seeing his hair change shape?

Although, to be fair, it probably wasn't a full blown lop off all in one go deal. It might well have just been half of it gone.

JAY has 2 questions for me. And he's really excited about them.

1. DURING HBK VS. AUSTIN AT KOTR '97, A MENTALLY CHALLENGED BOY JUMPED THE RAIL TO HELP HBK (I THINK). NOW I KNOW THAT IF IT'S ON TV, THEN 99.9% OF THE TIME IT'S A WORK. DO YOU THINK THIS FALLS INTO THE .01 PERCENTILE OF IT BEING LEGIT?

This was indeed legit, and he did not so much jump as fall. He was excited, being front row at a WWF event and all. He was a Special Olympian, and he ended up getting too into the show and fell over the rail, and was then led to the back where he took up a job with 's Writing Staff.

2. WHY DID THEY NOT INCLUDE A "LIFE STORY" ON THE SAVAGE DVD? THE DVD'S THAT I ENJOY THE MOST HAVE THE STORY AND THE MATCHES (JAKE ROBERTS, WARRIOR, PILLMAN, ETC.)

Because that would require people to talk about Savage, and that is not something Vince wants to do. The DVD set he put out made money off Savage with the least amount of attention he had to bring to it. Whatever the hell the grudge is, it runs deep.

Next up, David has some questions.

I love your column. You are, hands down, the best part of 411. I read it while waiting for the ridiculous load screens of Smackdown vs. Raw to finish loading.

I have two questions for you that I have thought about a lot:

1.) I have heard people tell very general stories of Randy Orton with backstage problems early in his WWE career and throwing tantrums and such, including certain pranks he would pull and something about defecating in a Divas' gym bag or something or other bad things related to Divas. I feel like people already know these stories but I must have missed the boat because I just wasn't paying close attention to Orton early in his career. What kind of things did he do to get such legitimate backstage heat earlier in his career? And what changed? Was he disciplined?

Well, basically Randy was a guy who tended to rub people the wrong way to begin with, he was brash and cocky. Given that he was in his early 20's and was on the fast track to the top that's somewhat understandable.

He's had incidents where he's supposedly trashed hotel rooms and general other acts of anger, but his treatment of women was somewhat distasteful.

Apparently, (while he's never actually come out and said this, it's fairly accepted), during his run as IC champ/in Evolution, Randy had somewhat… ‘old fashioned' views towards the WWE Divas. He viewed them as sex objects, referred to them using a word beginning with C that I'm not going to say here, and generally acting like they were there for him to screw.

Now, given that most of the women on Raw at the time were Diva Search contestants, you could say that he had a point.

Although I find any such treatment totally disgusting, for the record. I'm just reporting the facts.

The "shit in Diva's bag" was the high point of this douchebaggery, as Rochelle Loewen, a prime target of Randy's "Hazing"/"Discrimination"/"Douchebaggery" got her bag and belongings defaced with a mixture of baby oil and self tanning lotion, not shit. Despite some people disputing this claim, both Rochelle (who was one of a few Diva Search contestants who quit due, they claimed, because of this sort of behaviour) and Randy said this happened.

Randy was fined several times over this treatment, but he tended to just ignore such things.

This all came to a head when he was caught enjoying 4:20 at Kansas City at a Smackdown taping. He was caught, and then suspended for 60 days without pay, and ordered to attend an anger management course in Atlanta. And it seems to have worked, in that since then he hasn't been in the dirtsheets with attacks or flip outs much, even when he had some justification, such as when Kennedy dropped him on his ehad.

Although his trashing of the hotel room in Europe was after this point. So the ‘old' Randy is still there…

2.) I was reading one of Scott Keith's reviews of Summerslam 2002 and he talked about HBK going over HHH and how they wouldn't help either guy since Michaels' career was already over and he was still in terrible shape and would never be able to wrestle full-time again. Having missed out on this era, what was the story behind HBK's return, and what was expected of him in the summer of 2002? Was it just supposed to be a one-time deal? Was no one expecting him to continue his career wrestling after that PPV? Did he convince Vince he could keep wrestling, or was it the other way around?

Thanks a bunch! Your column gives me joy.

Yes, at the time, it was thought to be a one shot deal.

Shawn had been out of wrestling for 4 years, after having retired due to a bad back. Although 4 years was a long time, it was still a little sketchy that he'd be able to perform like the old Shawn. But during his time running the Academy, he had bumped and he felt he might be able to have one more match. So he pitched it to HHH, since Hunter was the guy he trusted more than anyone else, he agreed, and they were off and running.

They brought Shawn back as part of the nWo, then when that fizzled then changed it up a little, but the whole angle was leading to Summerslam, where Shawn fought Hunter, and won but then got beat down.

Now, the original plan was that Shawn would have this match, then he'd be booked to enter the Elimination Chamber, but on the night he'd get injured by HHH, then Edge would jump ship to Raw mid PPV, enter in his place and win the World Title. Shawn would then MAYBE return at Wrestlemania but probably would just ride back off into the sunset. However, at the show, Shawn was still up and moving and feeling good, so they changed plans, and gave Shawn the win (despite him not having any proper tights).

They then used him sparingly, as they weren't sure when the other shoe would drop. They had him fight RVD, then drop the title back to Hunter. Then they had him go up against Jericho at Wrestlemania, give him one last WM match, and then he could retire.

But after his match with Jericho at Wrestlemania, at that point, Shawn felt that God had cured his back, and he was able to come back full time. And so far, it's worked out pretty well, overall.

My Damm Opinion

Dale is back.

If things keep up could this summer be the return of the SmackDown Six? CM Punk, Jeff Hardy, Chris Jericho, Edge, and Rey Mysterio seem to put on amazing matches anytime they step into the ring. Elevate John Morrison and it's a solid six that are capable of putting on at least a 3 star match weekly, and it already has two vets in Edge and Rey.

Well, Jeff's leaving. But apart from that… I guess, although I somewhat resent this general idea.

Look, I'm the first to admit that the Smackdown Six rocked the house that rocked the party, given that it was 6 guys who could wrestle being told "You have 45 minutes. Go and wrestle" on a regular basis. But constantly looking for a new 6 is a bit silly. It's entirely possible that it'll be 5, or 8 guys. It'll happen, just don't fixate on the number, ok guys?

From numbers to something less solid, Brian has a question.

What's happening Sforcina?

Got a question about Pat Patterson. I'm looking for an educated opinion as much as anything.

I've heard many wrestling legends refer to Pat Patterson as the best "finish" guy in the history of the business (with due respect to Eddie Graham). I've seen him on many a legends roundtable on 24/7, which he only tips us to his iceberg of knowledge and aside from his amazing career as an active wrestler, he has been deeply involved in everything Vince McMahon has produced over the last 30 years.

Besides that, he's openly gay in a business that has a high Neanderthal quotient. Why on earth has he not been tabbed by WWE to write his memoirs. I tend to think it would be the most fascinating book WWE ever released (even if they whitewash it to make VKM out to be an angel) What's your take on the possibility that WWE would ever publish a book of such deep interest to hardcore fans and the potential for mainstream/crossover appeal?

I think, out of loyalty to Pat, WWE would publish the book. I'm just not sure Patterson would write it. I don't have anything concrete, but I get the feeling, from the scuttlebutt, that Patterson is a very nice guy, so he wouldn't write a tell all, dirt dishing book.

I dunno, I'd for one want to read it, but I don't get the vibe that he's write it. But I hope I'm wrong.

But it's not WWE's choice, only Pat can write it.

Dusty Rhodes and Sapphire came out to Dusty's "American Dream" theme song at Wrestlemania VI. It was changed to a generic song when it was released on video/DVD.

The music Dusty is coming out to is the music off the British version of "Wheel Of Fortune". It's certainly not on my Silver Vision edition of Wrestlemania VI I got in the early 90's.

I remember a PPV from I think it was 95 where The Roadie faced the 1-2-3 Kid. Kid went up top and Roadie hit him with a backward falling piledriver from the top rope for the win. Has anyone else in the major organization used a piledriver from the top rope and was this the origination of Kid's neck injury?

I am not sure I believe the story about Edge taking HBK's place in the Elimination Chamber. That doesn't seem to make much sense. I do remember that HBK didn't have good tights to wear, but I read it was due to his original clothes being ripped or torn. HBK never even wrestling makes no sense. He was at the building, so he was clearly going to be used. They could have filmed him being attacked backstage months in advance, and not have him just show up and see how his knee was. No way such a HUGE title match/win was changed so much last minute. It had to have been the plan since SummerSlam, to have HBK return, get the belt, then drop it, and go from there.

First, the answer is King of the Ring 1998.

Also, Rhodes and Sapphire did come out to Common Man. I have the original PPV recording on VHS and Common Man played at the beginning and end of the match. Is it played on the Dusty Rhodes DVD Set?

God did cure Shawn's back, it's one of his few proven miracles. So all us rasslin fans should just accept Christ. Which is easier then it sounds cause the media portrays us as Rednecks.

Check out Bushwhackers vs Rougeaus for some ball grabbing as I believe Jacques bodyslams Butch. Its pobably a rib and if not, extremely gay. I have also heard that Hogan made around 10 million a year around 98-99. I think he made something like 100 000 gs for every nitro and 1 million for every pay pe view he attended I could be wrong but Ive heard this for years.

Just a little tid bit to throw out their to you guys.....a good friend of my that I went to school with is cousins with Bundy. His mother and Bundy are first cousins.

I actually have pictures lying around of Bundy (through my friend I believe) sometime around his second WWE run putting a innocent kneck wrenching hold on a little kid. All the while giving keeping his King Kong Bundy mean face on for the shot. As a 5 or 6 year old seeing that picture was the coolest thing in the world.

I wouldn't find out until years later that my friend is related to him small world.

In regards to the Dust and Saphire Question... I have the original Coliseum Video release of WM VI and Rhodes and Saphire come out to Dusty's regular "American Dream" theme... So two possibilities I can think of. 1.) The dance music was played at the event but dubbed onto the initial VHS when it was released a few months later... I'm not really sure what dubbing capabilities were like in 1990 though. Or... 2.) The Dance Music was dubbed over for a later release (maybe the WM1-13 set from 97?) and the WWE just never bothered to change it back for future versions. Why would they do all this convoluded music switching of a song that they have probably always had the rights to? Who knows. Why does the WWE do half the crazy crap they do?

Bundy was actually an original member of the Legion Of Doom(Warriors,Bundy,Roberts,Spoiler)with an occasional assist from DiBiase in World Championship Wrestling(Georgia)until Ellering made an errant comment about Bundy eating the Legion of Doom out of house and home and was promptly attacked by Bundy, the Warriors made the save and then they did a feud of the Warriors trying to bodyslam Bundy along with Bundy and various partners trying to take the National Tag Titles before he bailed for New York.

Wrestlers don't wear cups??? I'm not sure if that makes me respect wrestlers more or less.

One of X-Pac's regular spots was finding a way to get himself crotched on the fence/wall surrounding the ring. Al Snow would set his opponent in the corner, then roll a bowling ball at their nuts during his hardcore matches. Christian did a spot at a Money in the Bank match where he set up a ladder horizontally between the ring and the wall, then stood on it, but got knocked off and dropped crotch first on the ladder leg, without his feet touching the ground. Surely the guys in these kind of situations had protection???

"And I'm the only man to hold a certain title in two companies. Who am I?"

A lot of people pointed this out last time, but this part isn't true. Mike Awesome held the ECW title while in ECW and into WCW, and Taz held it while in ECW and WWF (taking it off of, not coincidentally), Mike Awesome).

A Pat Patterson book would be in the top 5 though.

When the "mentally challenged boy" made his appearance at King of the Ring '97, I always thought that the announcers just used the term "Special Olympian" as a less than subtle way to indicate his handicapped status, as opposed to Lawler saying "Some retard just tried to interfere in the match" or something like that. But then I see people reference the event like Sforcina did and call him a Special Olympian. Does anyone remember whether there was actually any mention of Special Olympians being in the crowd of that show, or is my original assumption correct and people just took the announcers' word as fact?

I'm sorry to say this but you got the Dusty music question wrong. Dusty & Sapphire came out to American Dream at WrestleMania 6.

A problem with the video you have chosen to use is that there is a WWE in the corner of the screen, proving that it isn't from the day of the show.

As far as this match on DVD goes:

WM Anthology - generic song heard in youtube clip

Dusty Rhodes DVD - American Dream

Savage DVD - generic song used in Youtube clip

Sorry, but calling bullshit on your "Actually, that was the actual music they played. They did not use the Common Man music. They actually used that dancey music[...]"

Got 2 questions for ya
1. I like to sometime browse Wikipedia for wrestling articles and sometime title histories. Anyway I was wondering why both WCW and ECW had TV Championships while WWF/E never did? I can imagine because WWE already had the Intercontinental Title as their second-tier belt. However WCW had both the US and TV Championships. The only reason I could come up with was that both WCW and ECW were eager to get decent ratings so thus they create belts that suggest title changes on PPV and not PPV. And was there any difference between the two TV championships regarding the stipulations?

2. Oh and although it's hard to predict now, but any ideas what the main-event of Wrestlemania 26 might be? What would you like to see?

Posted By: AH (Guest)  on August 12, 2009 at 04:52 AM

"2. WHY DID THEY NOT INCLUDE A "LIFE STORY" ON THE SAVAGE DVD? THE DVD'S THAT I ENJOY THE MOST HAVE THE STORY AND THE MATCHES (JAKE ROBERTS, WARRIOR, PILLMAN, ETC.)"

Would you really want one? Considering it would have wound up like that Warrior DVD? If the grudge (LOL SLEPT WITH STEPH ROTF) was in full effect, I believe we'd have a burial documentary. Considering that they could have just kept ignoring him, I think it says something that we got SOMETHING eventually. And he was all over the I-C set and the SNME one.

People tend to bitch about WWE style doc's in general anyway, and I am sure whatever they did, someone would complain about them altering history again. I think we're lucky we got a good collection of Savage's career highlights...anyway I'm all about the matches.

"Something I've been curious about, on the HHH DVD, Hunter says Mero was a bad worker. Is this true or not? He didn't seem like one, but maybe my memory sucks."

If the DVD came out after the Benoit incident, I feel a certain series of media appearances by Mero had something to do with that.

re: the top rope piledriver questions: Rhino did one in ECW. And there were the stories of Eric Embry breaking someone's neck with one, though I don't know if this took place in Rio de Janiero, if you know what I mean.

"Dusty Rhodes and Sapphire came out to Dusty's "American Dream" theme song at Wrestlemania VI. It was changed to a generic song when it was released on video/DVD."

Ah, the Music Clearance Monster, my favorite topic. I am guessing they didn't have the rights to it because of whoever the vocalist was (same thing happened with Boss Man's face theme, which ALSO had a singer). It was returned in Rhodes' DVD...but minus the Jesse commentary.

Hey, great column. You've probably gotten this before, but I have a question about Ric Rude. I remember years ago watching with my brother when Jack Tunney "suspended" Rude for something and I believe it was the last we saw of him. Was this when Rude officially left the company? Any idea why? What was the kayfabe reason for his suspension? Did they ever make mention of it again when he came back to WWF? Sorry, I know that's a lot of random questions about one angle, but it's been driving me crazy lately.

I'm pretty sure Tommy is the only one to hold the ECW and WWEECW title, which should be the intended meaning.

"This was indeed legit, and he did not so much jump as fall. He was excited, being front row at a WWF event and all. He was a Special Olympian, and he ended up getting too into the show and fell over the rail, and was then led to the back where he took up a job with 's Writing Staff."

You've got to give credit to HBK and Austin for working around that. HBK got to be the big babyface by making sure the kid was all right, and Stone Cold got to prove that he was...well, stone cold by ignoring the kid completely, and focus on fighting.

I always considered them to be the "Smackdown Five and Chavo", because Chavo wasn't a big factor in any of the classics (Benoit/Angle, Eddie/Edge, Angle/Rey, Angle/Benoit vs Edge/Rey).
His only PPV match as part of the six was Survivor Series 2002, which was the most dissapointing match for years until Triple H vs Randy Orton replaced it.

Anyway, regarding the Hell in a Cell structure, how did it come to be introduced to WWF TV. Did they just run a promo saying they will compete in a new match? Did Taker challenge HBK to a cage match with a roof? Did the WWF president make an announcement?
How did they introduce the cell to the punters?

______________________________

I wrestled for roughly six years, and aside from the bowling ball spot, I, at one point or another did the spots you mentioned, as well as several other crotch-shot spots and never wore a cup. I preformed a move much like Jeff Hardy's corner dropkick, but instead of hitting a dropkick, I'd land with a headbutt to the crotch of the guy slumped in the corner and never wrestled a guy that wore a cup. If you're going to fall onto a steel object, crotch-first, you're going to know how to catch yourself and keep from racking yourself up real bad. It's not like a skateboarder effin' up on a rail grind and unexpectedly crotching himself. You know it's coming and you can prepare. I can't speak for every wrestler in the world, but I know never wore one, and never worked a guy that wore one. You trust yourself, and you put trust in your opponent to not rupture your testicle during a match. In six or seven years I only stiffed (probably a bad term to use with thie subject) one time with a shot to the crotch. He was coming off the top rope with a double axe-handle, and my valet distracted the ref, so as he came down I threw a kick at the crotch, then scooped him up and nailed a running DVD for the win. I was also only stiffed once. I was in a hardcore match and had a big stop sign laid over my crotch, and my opponent was going to throw an old Super Nintendo sysyem at the sign... sounds bad, but the spot doesn't hurt at all. Only problem was when he went to throw it, he stepped forward a bit too much and nudged the stop sign out of the way just enough to crush me with the SNES. That hurt, bad, but that's just the way it goes sometimes.

"But constantly looking for a new 6 is a bit silly. It's entirely possible that it'll be 5, or 8 guys. It'll happen, just don't fixate on the number, ok guys?"

I think referring to a new SmackDown Six by that name is fine as it's just a name. Like you said it could be five or eight guys but the term "SmackDown Six" signifies them as the ones pairing up every week to deliver the best matches. So while there might be five or eight wrestlers in the group they're still the SmackDown Six.

"I remember a PPV from I think it was 95 where The Roadie faced the 1-2-3 Kid. Kid went up top and Roadie hit him with a backward falling piledriver from the top rope for the win. Justin Credible hit a top rope (well, middle rope) That's Incredible (tombstone) on Jerry Lynn at Heat Wave '98.

The Undertaker's memoirs would be great to read but he'll probably be working for WWE in some way, shape or form for the rest of his life so we know we'd get the WWE spin on some things he writes about.

If you believe Bret Hart's book (and really, there's no reason to really not believe what he says) 'Taker was legitimately pissed off with the way Vince treated Bret at Survivor Series '97 as well as disliking Shawn's asshole-ish backstage antics. It'd be nice to read Mark's real views on these things. Too bad it probably won't happen since WWE would most likely strike anything that didn't sit well with them.

Lord knows what Randy Savage did to VKM to piss him off. McMahon has taken back Jimmy Snuka, and he "allegedly" killed a chick in a hotel room. Pat Patterson got him in trouble for "allegedly" sexually harassing young boys. Hogan and others got him in trouble over steroids. All have been taken back into the good graces of the WWE. Someone else has to know the reason and it's amazing that no one has spilled the beans. Hogan, Bischoff, someone behind the scenes has to know the real story and yet nothing has ever gotten out except rumors. Whatever happened between these 2 is going to take years to come out.

'Besides that, he's openly gay in a business that has a high Neanderthal quotient. '
Amen to that. My follow up question would be 'How did Vince, given his propensity for demeaning loyal employees and using ethnic/sexual stereotypes at their most base, never exploit Patterson's openness about his homosexuality? JR got the occasional (funny) dig in, but I'm surprised that Vince never used his sexuality as the 'butt' of his never ending list of jokes that only amuse himself and perennial lackey (at the time) Bruce Pritchard.'

Seriously Sforcina, how could you get the Dusty Sapphire question wrong??
Do you own ANY wrestling DVD's or videos??
On the Dusty Rhoades DVD it is CLEARLY his "Common Man" music! Also, when Wrestlemania VI ORIGINALLY aired(I know, how crazy to have been watching wrestling for this long??) they came out to "Common Man"!

Get your shit together!

Also, I can't believe you haven't read Bret Hart's book! It is quite possibly the GREATEST wrestling book to come out in the past few years with MORE inside information that is not "Skewed" by the WWE!

But then again, by reading that, it might help you with the column thus eliminating the use of Chandler answers and reader requests for answers, and we wouldn't want that now would we?

Just keep using YouTube for your info and everything will be A-OK in Sforcina land. LOL!

I have two copies of WM6 one is the coliseum video and the other is the WWF Home video re-release and both have the American Dream theme. I also noticed on the Summerslam Anthology they use Bossman's original music on one of the discs and then dub his 99 music on the others

Finally got one...

I featured a title change (KANE OVER AUSTIN), and a title retention (OUTLAWS OVER NEW MIDNIGHT EXPRESS), despite two more singles champions (HHH the EURO CHAMP and Rock the IC CHAMP) and a set of tag team champions (EXPRESS were NWA TAG CHAMPS) having matches that were not for those belts. Someone won two matches by Submission in the same night (SHAMROCK), while the title change was by a non-usual means (FIRST BLOOD) of victory (even before you take into account the outside interference). You saw ‘two' companies (WWF AND NWA) wrestling (the hosts and a tag team from another), an inanimate object wrestling, and Chyna being a part of two straight matches without having a match herself (INTERFERED IN XPAC/OWEN and TAG MATCH). A show with a Match Of The Year (UT/MANKIND HiTC) in it, I am… What?

"Hey, great column.

Just to save Mathew some time for next week's column:

After Rick Rude's feud with Ultimate Warrior ended at SummerSlam '90, WWF built towards a feud between Rude and Big Bossman who was finishing up his post-WM VI feud with Ted DiBiase.

The feud was built around Bobby Heenan, Rude's manager, constantly saying awful things about Bossman's mother. Rude would then interject either during backstage interviews or the PIP in the corner of televised matches.

Before Rude & Bossman could have a high-profile match, Rude was suddenly gone from the company (fired or walked away as a free agent, depending on who you believe). Rather than drop the storyline entirely (which WWE is prone to do today!), Tunney explained that recent Rude comments were so, well, "rude", that he was suspending him indefinitely. Furthermore, since Heenan was in charge of Rude and kept feeding the fire, and Bossman needed someone to fight, Heenan was put in a series of matches with Bossman on house shows.

Bossman disposed of Heenan over the next few months before building to an I-C title program with Heenan's main charge at the time, Mr. Perfect. This culminated in a match at WMVII that Bossman (/w/ Andre the Giant in his corner) won by DQ.

Shortly after, Heenan retired from "active managing," and Bossman moved onto his feud with The Mountie.

"I still got the VHS with the PPV that I recorded as it aired back in 1990 and yes, Dusty and Sapphire did came out to "Common Man".

You say that when a woman is around and you'll stay a virgin forever, dude!

And all a guy can say is: Dude, you can transfer VHS to DVD.

And we ALL agree that you cannot possibly have looked for (and immediately found) that particular VHS tape to check the entrance music of Dusty Rhodes and Sapphire.

You cannot be serious!

I hope Matt Morgan reads this site cause he is the most talentless, uncoordinated, fuck face CHUD excuse for a wrestler I've ever witnessed and I've seen Khali wrestle! He should have a VIOLENT stroke and die!

""And I'm the only man to hold a certain title in two companies. Who am I?"

A lot of people pointed this out last time, but this part isn't true. Mike Awesome held the ECW title while in ECW and into WCW, and Taz held it while in ECW and WWF (taking it off of, not coincidentally), Mike Awesome).

Posted By: zappafrank (Guest) on August 12, 2009 at 01:43 AM"

The belt didn't belong to WCW or WWE so they didn't actually hold it in those companies.

I find it somewhat hilarious that your name is The Voices In Your Head while you spout off the 'benefits' of God and Christ.

"Wrestlers don't wear cups??? I'm not sure if that makes me respect wrestlers more or less"

I've wrestled on small local indy shows for about 7 years and there's a lot of timing that goes into these spots. Your general kick to the nuts is a pulled kick that lands on the inner thigh (just like a punch to the face is pulled). A dramatic "uppercut" low blow is stopped short of actually connecting too harshly - though it does glance and hurts a little and helps with the "sell". With the big time "crotchings" on the ropes, the wrestler land on his thigh and then sort of hops up on the rope to make it appear he landed directly on his crotch. Just like everything else that happens in the ring, the more skilled wrestlers make it look seemless but if you watch closely you can see how its done. Nobody drops ten feet onto a rope or ladder rung directly onto their balls - no match is worth doing that crap!

Sorry to disappoint you, dude, but

1. I'm married... with children (and an uncle we cordially call "King Kong").
2. I got the Tagged Classics DVD too, so what would I need a homemade VHS-to-DVD for? But I bow to your techy-knowledge anyway!
3. No, none of us agree. If you keep your collection in order, stuff is easy to find. Try it, don't deny it!
4. I'm right.
5. Remember what happened with Lendl. Don't overreact.

God, all of you getting your nerd up over an entrance theme from decades ago is hilarious. I love arguing in the comments section...about things that matter.

This is just ridiculous. But then again, I do important things in my life and have more to think about than wrestling entrance themes of yesteryear.

How dare the author not know the answer?

I collect wrestlers autobiographies and love reading them. patterson would be awesome and here are some others that would be good:

Jake Roberts - being second fiddle to hogan, dealing with addiction. His dvd was awesome, his book would match.

Earl Hebner - find out what its like for the third man in the ring, and of course, his feelings on the screwjob.

Undertaker - won't happen till he can be out of character, but lord knows he has amazing stories to tell.

Shane/Stephanie McMahon - what was it like growing up a mcmahon and being forced into the WWF/E their whole lives

My nerd up is what keeps me up. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get up after falling down at my age. Also, 19 years is not decades ago, not even 2. But I'm very happy 1 of those important things in your life is correcting unimportant posts on a wrestling board with your important ones!

The author doesn't know the answer, or got it wrong, so he gets corrected - what's so horrible or wrong about that? I can ask safely, knowing you'll be back to read this page anyway.

About George Steele and WM4. George answered this on a message board a few years ago. He slipped in the aisle on the way to the ring and hurt his knee.

As far as Rick Rude, I believe he left because he felt he was underpaid even though he main evented Summerslam 90. The kayfabe explanation was because of his comments about the Bossman's mother. Jack Tunney then declared that because contracts had already been signed for Bossman/Rude matches, Bobby Heenan had to take Rude's place.

Wow, way to get your cred back by correcting the other poster. Nineteen years ago does not qualify as decades ago, if only it had been twenty years ago, "decades" would have been the proper word choice and his post would have mattered.

As it stands, you nailed the guy on a ticky point and get to become geek lord again. How dare he think "decades" can describe something that happened almost two decades ago?

You are the coolest guy here for owning both Guest # whatever and the author!

Do you know the name of the actress or model who played Jerry Lawler's mother before his match against Bret Hart at the first In Your House PPV?

Posted By: Rob (Guest)  on August 14, 2009 at 09:06 AM

Rob>> IMDB doesn't credit who played Lawlers mother.

Didn't Sforcina mix something up in the short Bundy bio? Is it just me, or did he suddenly call him Studd?

Has anyone heard what Randy Savage thinks about the DVD? Does he hate it, does he think it is good or what? And do you think he gets any royalties for that release such as Bret Hart did for his DVD set? Something like 10% seems fair IMO.
