411 PPV Roundtable Preview: WWE SummerSlam 2009
Posted by Stephen Randle on 08.21.2009
It's time for WWE's biggest party of the summer, SummerSlam. Five titles will be on the line, including the World Heavyweight Championship being contested under TLC rules! Plus, D-X takes on the third generation Legacy, John Cena seeks to shut Randy Orton up, and Dolph Ziggler looks to take his place amongst the greatest IC champs of all time! The 411 Staff has their thoughts on the PPV inside!
Introduction:
Yes, it's time once again for the PPV that WWE has, for years, presented as its second-biggest of the wrestling year. It's hot, it's tradition, it's the biggest party of the summer, WWE SummerSlam. Home to such classics as the Megapower vs the Mega-Bucks, Bret vs Owen, Rock vs Brock, and even the very first TLC match. What a coincidence, then, that the biggest match of this year's show is set to bring back that infamous gimmick, as the World title will be on the line, hanging over the ring in the ever-dangerous Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (oh my!) match. And that's not all, as five titles are currently set to be on the line, including all three major belts, the unified tag team championships, and the highly-coveted Intercontinental title. Plus, D-Generation X has once again returned to face possibly their biggest challenge in years, as they face the young and hungry members of Legacy.
With everything coming to a head this Sunday, who better than the 411 writers to let you know who they think will come out victorious at WWE's annual summer climax? Nobody, that's who, and as always, we are out in force to give you our best predictions and insight into SummerSlam.

WWE SUMMERSLAM 2009
Kane vs The Great Khali
Stephen Randle: I could swear this feud happened at some point in the past, but I seem to have blocked it from my memory. Would anyone not directly related to either man (or named Jeff Small) care that much if both these guys dropped out of pro wrestling tomorrow?
Winner: The Great Khali
Ari Berenstein:
Haven't we seen this?
It sucked then, it sucks now
Please let it be short.
Winner: Kane via pinfall (Ranjin holds Kane but Khali-Chop hits him instead. Kane with the chokeslam for the win)
Michael Bauer: Well, it's Kane... and it's Khali... Odds this match goes on for at least 3 minutes too long: 5 to 1. Then again, anything more than 5 minutes is too long already. Kane has been running like chicken shit this entire feud and winning here makes Khali look like shit... even more so...
Winner: The Great Khali
Len Archibald: Hmmm…No John Morrison, huh? Strange. *looks at watch* I think it's about time for Kane's yearly "monster" push.
Winner: Kane
Andy Clark: Call me crazy, but I'm actually looking forward to this match. It's been built up better than both the Raw and ECW main events, and somehow without my knowing it I've grown to be a Kane fan (who knew?) The match probably won't be pretty but so long as it's too giants beating the hell out of each other I'm cool. They probably have more planned for Kane than Khali in the foreseeable future, and we can't rule out the possibility of a Runjin Singh turn.
Winner: Kane
Julian Bond: Sure Khali isn't the greatest wrestler in the world and sure Kane isn't as great as he used to be, their mini-feud has been done very well and slowly built up. It's a good old-school feel with two big guys just wanting to kick each other's ass. Kane was on a little winning streak before he started going at Khali, but I think Khali takes it here for a little revenge.
Winner: The Great Khali
Michael Weyer: Not too bad a build-up but hard to see this being anything but slow and sometimes ugly. Well, let's hope it's quick at least...
WINNER: Kane
John Peters: This will probably be short, but Kane seems to have the momentum going into this match. I could see Khali winning this match, but I can't see either guy doing much else in the near future, so if Kane wins the feud can continue.
Winner: Kane
Aaron Hubbard: The Wrestlemania XXIII rematch that nobody wanted to see. And since Kane is working heel, I doubt we'll get the bodyslam to make this work. I think Kane will get his win back.
Winner: Kane
Jeff Small: This match, not surprisingly, is why I am ordering SummerFest this year. Honestly, I do not expect this match to suck as bad as most people think. First, their Wrestlemania 23 match was harmless. Second, with Kane as the heel, he can at least control the match better than the Great Khali. As far as the winner, it appears that Kane is on a hot streak so expect him to job here.
Winner: The Great Khali
Jack Swagger vs MVP
Stephen Randle: I'd like to say something trite like "these are two guys going in different directions", but really, they're just two guys at exactly the same plateau in their careers. The difference is, Swagger came up to get to it, and MVP dropped down from a higher point. And now they're stuck in the limbo that is the Raw midcard, where everyone fights each other and nobody cares who wins, because you're never going to take that spot in the main event.
Winner: Jack Swagger
Ari Berenstein:
Wanted to see it;
Then Raw--crappy finish. BLAH!
Better be better.
Winner: MVP via pinfall (running yakuza)
Michael Bauer: Odds this match doesn't get ten minutes: 6 to 1. You know, this match almost reminds me of The Longest Yard, with the rough neck felons against the high and mighty All American Cops. And MVP, being beaten down by the super opportunistic Swagger, is ready to bust out for a huge victory.
Winner: MVP
Len Archibald: What's this? A RAW mid-card feud that actually leads to a high-profile match? I'm like…Stunned. Completely. Now – it would be nice if they went the Rock/Triple H route and actually developed them a little better…Have them rival over a certain title – maybe in a stipulation match. Oh well, I don't write for them, I just enjoy the product – sort of. The All-American American gets the duke, here.
Winner: Jack Swagger
Andy Clark: You know I would have been a lot more excited, I mean A LOT more excite, about this match if they had just booked an interview segment on Raw instead of a match. The match should be good though and both men should be happy to not have to wrestle a midcard match on Monday nights, because PPV and Superstars are the only places a Raw midcarder has a chance to shine. I see Swagger feuding with Cena in the near future so he gets the win.
Winner: Jack Swagger
Julian Bond: MVP has been on another mini losing streak as of late and Jack Swagger has been looking dominant in the process of getting his feet wet on Raw. So I go with MVP just for goodness sake and because Swagger would still look good in a loss here.
Winner: MVP
Michael Weyer: I'd just love to see these guys do a mic showdown, both so good on it. The match itself promises some good fun with MVP out for revenge and should be able to get the win with Swagger giving his all.
WINNER: MVP
John Peters: It seems like MVP is back on his losing streak, as he has not been able to beat Swagger. I expect more of the same here. This could be a great rivalry, but I'm just not feeling it.
Winner: Jack Swagger
Aaron Hubard: This could definitely be a sleeper match if it gets more than six minutes. Both guys know how to wrestle and they work hard. Winner? I'll flip a coin.
Winner: MVP (Tails)
Jeff Small: I am still in shock that this made the SummerSlam card. Let's hope that MVP has better luck here than he did last year when he went on to defeat Jeff Hardy and then lose his next 20-something encounters. This year, I just expect him to lose this match.
Winner: Jack Swagga
D-Generation X vs The Legacy
Stephen Randle: I predict that this match will have a surprising ending. Not out of any sense of "gee, we should make Rhodes and DiBiase look like actual threats and not incompetent lackies at some point". More of a "we can point to this match and say ‘see, Triple H puts people over'". Of course, I don't expect a clean win here, no indeed. There's putting somebody over, and then there's "putting somebody over".
Winner: D-X, by DQ
Ari Berenstein:
Are you ready? NO!
I SAID … ARRRRRRRRRRRE … YOUUUUUUUUU … READDDDDDDY? Well!
Go on, get ready!
Winner: DX gets ready to SQUASH ITTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!! (simultaneous Sweet Chin Music / Pedigree on Legacy)
Michael Bauer: Odds of a total squash match: 25 to 1. This one might surprise some people, but I don't expect just a one and done deal here. This is a feud you can build up to Survivor Series and I kinda feel like that will happen here. However, HHH and Michaels shouldn't go over here to ensure that happens.
Winners: Legacy
Len Archibald: Did you see what happened on Monday? Yeah, I don't think the result is in doubt. If – IF D-X loses, I will look out my window and expect to see the Four Horsemen of the apocalypse. Not that Four Horsemen (this is what happens when you write on a wrestling site.) Woo.
Winner: D-Generation X
Andy Clark: I liked this story better the last time I heard it and it was called DX vs. Cade & Murdoch. At least they had the decency not to waste that one on PPV. If they go the safe route DX wins. I'd love to see Legacy win then turn on Orton the next night on Raw and see Triple H turn on Michaels too, switching Orton and Triple H's spots as heel and face. DX wins though, but I can still hope for that Triple H turn at least.
Winners: DX
Julian Bond: This should be a nice fun easy going match for the returning team of DX. The green duo should easily take it here to make the fans happy.
Winner: DX
Michael Weyer: You don't get DX back together for them to lose. Hopefully, they can give Legacy a little push with the matchup but I think we all know the end result.
WINNERS: DX
John Peters: On Raw they really tried to make Legacy look like they can hang with Triple H and Shawn Michaels. However, I seriously doubt that DX is going to lose to just two guys. I mean this was the team that in 2006 beat up all five members of the Spirit Squad, Ken Kennedy, Finlay, Regal, Big Show, and then went on to win their match against Vince and Shane McMahon. I don't see how it's possible for them to lose to just two above-average wrestlers.
Winner: D-Generation X
Aaron Hubbard: Okay, okay, here me out. I think DiBiase is in for a big push, probably feuding with Shawn Michaels in the fall. In my opinion, that means he has to look legitimate. But, there's no way that Legacy is going to win this. I think Rhodes will be pinned here, and the September PPV will feature Rhodes vs. HHH and DiBiase vs. HBK.
Winner: D-Generation X
Jeff Small: Like this one is in doubt.
Winner: D-X
Rey Mysterio (c) vs Dolph Ziggler
Stephen Randle: Now it's time to put Ziggler over, he's got the gimmick down, a credible finisher (that, conveniently for later on, he can use on anyone), a following, a good feud, and even a hot chick. All that's left is a title and seeing if he sinks or swims as a big dog.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Ari Berenstein:
Really a nice guy
Maria says so, of course
I think Rey says "no."
Winner: Rey Mysterio (retains due to Dolph being distracted by Maria's presence leading to the finish)
Michael Bauer: This is interesting here. I know that I can't stand the thought of Dolph being champion, but it seems like it is the right call here so Mysterio can maybe be a temporary challenger to the World Title. Odds on a new champion: 10 to 1, only because it is still not a slam dunk.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Len Archibald: Rey-Rey's been having some good to great matches lately. Dolph has been moving along nicely as a Smackdown Upper-Mid carder. He has some heat, he has Maria, now he needs some gold. I said he was going to win last month, but this may be the better (and bigger) stage for him.
Winner: AND NEW INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION – Dolph Ziggler
Andy Clark: Last month I said Ziggler would lose at Night of Champions but win the rematch at SummerSlam. So far so good.
Winner and NEW Intercontinental Champion: Dolph Ziggler
Julian Bond: I foolishly thought that Ziggler would take the IC belt on his first try last month but I knew better than this. So HERE I do seriously think that the big Z finally gets his first major win here.
Winner and NEW Intercontinental Champion: Dolph Ziggler
Michael Weyer: They did a good job last month and Ziggler has been on a roll lately so I think the title change can come down here and about time to give Ziggler his big push.
WINNER and NEW IC Champion: Dolph Ziggler
John Peters: This is a real toss up. Ziggler has looked really good, but where does Rey Mysterio go with all the momentum he's built up if he loses the belt? More importantly, what happens to the belt? The Intercontinental Title has been lifted from the depths of pointlessness due thanks to the fact that major stars have been chasing the belt. Ziggler is good, but he's not a major star. So does WWE give him the rub, or do they make him chase it one more month. I think he should really work for it, like MVP had to when he finally beat Benoit for the US Title. Plus, I think most of the other heels are going to be winning their matches, so the bad guys can't all win.
Winner: Rey Mysterio
Aaron Hubbard: I'm looking at the big picture here. If Jeff Hardy is leaving, Rey-Rey is a natural fit for his underdog replacement, and could have a VERY fun feud with CM Punk. Logically, he will drop the IC title to a deserving midcarder before moving to the main event. Ziggler will win, and then will keep the belt warm for John Morrison.
Winner and NEW Intercontinental Champion: Dolph Ziggler
Jeff Small: Most people, including myself, were surprised when Mysterio knocked off Ziggler last month. This month, no one will be surprised when Ziggler wins the IC belt. It's time for Mysterio to make his yearly appearance in the main event scene now that Jeff Hardy is going MIA.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Chris Jericho and The Big Show (c) vs Cryme Tyme
Stephen Randle: The question continues to be, which do you think WWE wants running around both brands? The good news is, Cryme Tyme has never, ever looked more credible as wrestlers than they do now.
Winner: Chris Jericho and The Big Show Ari Berenstein:
A big rub from Shaq--
Big Show swats Brooklyn boys down.
That's enough of that.
Winner: Chris Jericho & Big Show retain the WWE Unified Titles (combination Camel clutch / Walls of Jericho)
Michael Bauer: Odds on a title change: 500 to 1. Forget it, there is no freaking chance of Cryme Tyme winning the titles here. Jericho needs to hold these titles for a while until Edge is ready and losing here makes no sense on more than enough levels to tower The BIg Show. By the way, congrats JTG on your victory over Jericho, it's the only big win you will ever get.
Winners: Y2J and The Giant
Len Archibald: As much as I like Cryme Type (ghetto spelling notwithstanding), I don't see them taking the belts, here. I think they're establishing JeriShow as a nice monster team and it would be foolish to pull the rug from under them. But this is the ‘E, so expect a Shaq run-in to cost them the gold to prove me wrong. Of course – the OTHER possibility is that this may have been where any planned Edge and Jericho disintegration could have started had Edge not gotten hurt. So, I guess it's feasible for Cryme Tyme to win it's first Tag Team gold. That is still too much logic for the WWE to handle, though.
Winner: AND STILL UNIFIED TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS – Chris Jericho and The Big Show
Andy Clark: I'm torn on this one. Cryme Tyme needs to win the belts at some point, but Raw is benefitting from getting to book Jericho as a Tag Team Champion. I think we've just seen the beginning of the Jericho-Show team, so Cryme Tyme will have to wait a little longer to get the titles.
Winners and STILL Unified Tag Team Champions: Chris Jericho & Big Show
Julian Bond: This may surprisingly be the sleeper match of the night. Cryme Tyme (minus their silly-as-hell and kind of annoying "Word Up" segments) have been looking good as hell recently and should be good opponents for the unstoppable force that is Jericho and Show. Me thinking that Show/Jericho won't lose the straps until Edge (hopefully) makes his return to take on Jericho. So here's hoping for a good long reign.
Winner and STILL Unified Tag Team Champions: Jericho and Big Show
Michael Weyer: It's been way overdue for Cryme Tyme to get some gold but hard to see them dumping the belts off Jericho and Show already. They're due to fall apart in the end and possible a title change can push it but just don't see it happening here.
WINNERS and STILL Tag Team Champions: Show and Y2J
John Peters: Big Show and Jericho have a good thing going. They are two major stars that, by nature of being Tag Team Champions, can show up on any show they are needed on. Why would WWE end that?
Winner: Jeri-Show
Aaron Hubbard: Pleh. This is the hardest one for me to pick a winner on. Logically, there is no way for Cryme Tyme to defeat Jericho and Show. On the other hand, they almost have to win in order for there to be a real tag team division. Coin toss again.
Winner: Chris Jericho and The Big Show (Heads)
Jeff Small: At least we know that this will be a step-up from last month's NOC tag team match. While Cryme Tyme is over enough to win the belts, I just can't see the WWE take the belts off of Jerishow at this moment. If the WWE wants to keep Jerishow on Raw and Smackdown (and believe me, they do), then they have to keep the belts.
Winner: Chris Jericho & the Big Show
Christian (c) vs William Regal
Stephen Randle: So, Regal has the numbers (and hopefully this means even WWE has realized that there's no real wrestling role for Kozlov or Jackson outside of bodyguards at this point), and I have no problem with him winning the belt, I just hope they have plans for Christian outside of "now he's chasing the ECW belt again".
Winner: William Regal
Ari Berenstein:
Regal's Red Coats--
Ezekiel and Kozlov;
Too much to handle.
Winner: William Regal is the NEW ECW Champion (interference from Ezekiel and Kozlov + Cheat to Win)
Michael Bauer: Odds that I have no clue what the hell is going on in ECW: 5 to 1... AND I RECAP THE DAMN SHOW! Regal's alliance with Kozlov and Jackson is definitely disturbing and it makes less sense than anything TNA does. Seriously, about a month ago he tells Yoshi Tatsu that he dispises foreigners, so he aligns with the Russian Mauler? And Kozlov was aligned with Jackson this whole time? What the freaking hell??? Odds Regal wins the ECW Title: 2 to 1. He has to win here or else everything else makes even less sense than it does now.
Winner: William Regal
Len Archibald: I don't see Vince McMahon looking to push Christian as ECW's answer to John Cena, where he overcomes all odds and is able to win despite being horribly outnumbered. Regal has Koslov and EZIKEL in his corner. I think we're seeing the start of a nice little monster stable, here. In order for that to work, Regal needs to win here.
Winner: AND NEW ECW CHAMPION – William Regal
Andy Clark: The addition of Regal's potential new stable makes me give him a little more chance in this match but I'm still leaning against it. It's possible Regal does win the title at some point, but not in his first try. It would probably work better in the Submission Match next month anyhow.
Winner and STILL ECW Champion: Christian
Julian Bond: I thought that maybe they may give Kozlov the next title shot since he kind of pinned both Christian and Tommy Dreamer a few weeks ago, but I'm guessing that they switched that idea once they got Regal kicking mucho ass now. So I think that Regal, for his long-standing efforts with the company, will get to finally wear a "World Title" despite being just in the form of the good ol' ECW belt.
Winner and NEW ECW Champion: William Regal
Michael Weyer: Never thought I'd see the day Regal challenged for the ECW belt. It should be a good match if Regal gives his all but as Christian just got the belt and having a good time as champion, they should keep it on him for a bit longer.
WINNER and STILL ECW Champion: Captain Charisma
John Peters: All signs point to Regal winning the belt, but with eight matches on the show, they're bound to cut at least one short. It seems like the ECW Title match is usually the one to get the shaft, so Regal will be disqualified within 5 minutes when his new backup interferes, so they can have a more meaningful match somewhere down the road.
Winner: Christian (by DQ)
Aaron Hubbard: Hey, Regal is on a PPV! Another potential sleeper match. I have a feeling that this will be Regal's reward for his loyal service.
Winner and NEW ECW Champion: William Regal
Jeff Small: Even with the inclusion of Regal's new stable, I do not see Christian losing the ECW Title so soon. I'd expect a cheating win from Christian here to extend the feud. These two men had a good match on Superstars about one month ago so if they get 13 minutes, we should have a good mid-card match here.
Winner: Christian
Randy Orton (c) vs John Cena
Stephen Randle: Actually, this is a tough one, but not in a good way, because it truly doesn't matter who wins. Why is that? Well, ten will get you twenty that we get the exact same matchup for Breaking Point.
Winner: John Cena
Ari Berenstein:
He's not Seth Green,
Jeremy Piven or Prinze.
But you can't see that.
Winner: John Cena is the NEW WWE Champion (Punt dodge to STF)
Michael Bauer: Odds that this goes on last: 4 to 1. Odds that this match will be boring as all hell: 5 to 1. Odds on Orton retaining: 8 to 1. You know, I would like Cena's chances a lot more if he hasn't been to take everything Orton has thrown at him and still come back for more. I mean, has Orton one-upped Cena at all in this feud? I can't recall any time that he has, so I give him the victory when it really counts.
Winner: Randy Orton
Len Archibald: It feels like John Cena has not had his spinner belt around his waist forever (it may seem like less to the HATAZ~!) Randy Orton's run as WWE Champ has been…um…an abysmal failure. I think the Age of Orton ends and we see the return of everyone's favorite catchphrase, "THE CHAMP…IS…HERE!"
Winner: AND NEW WWE CHAMPION – John Cena
Andy Clark: With the Hell in a Cell PPV coming up in two months they are going to have to keep the title picture revolving around Orton, Cena, and Triple H because no one else can get a Hell in a Cell worthy matchup in that amount of time. I thought Cena might have won at Night of Champions but he came up just short. He goes all the way this time.
Winner and NEW WWE Champion: John Cena
Julian Bond: At first I thought that Cena might take the belt…just cause. But I'm hoping that they keep the belt on Orton for a couple more months…just cause. Man they need some more main eventers on Raw.
Winner and STILL WWE Champion: Randy Orton
Michael Weyer: Orton has had a great run but long overdue for the belt to go back to the guy WWE knows can carry it in awesome matches and boost the face of the company again.
WINNER and NEW WWE Champion: The Champ is back!
John Peters: I really hope I'm wrong with this prediction, because I am so sick of Randy Orton as WWE Champion. WWE really missed the boat with him at WrestleMania when he was a white-hot heel. His subsequent run(s) with the belt have made for the most boring and stagnant main event scene since I can't even remember when. Not to rant here, but even the Intercontinental Title and the Tag Titles have been booked better than the WWE Title in recent months. The problem is, as much as I think Cena should win, the WWE just doesn't do World Title Changes at SummerSlam. To this date the WWE and/or World Heavyweight Titles have changed hands only five times in the event's 21 year history (97, 99, 01(the WCW Title), 02, 04). So, the odds don't look good for Cena, especially considering that World title is probably going t be switching hands.
Winner: Randy Orton
Aaron Hubbard: The match that should have main-evented Wrestlemania XXV. The match has not been built up well, but it stands a chance of being stellar. Cena always brings his working boots to PPV, and if Orton is in there with somebody not called Triple H, he can be fast too. I think John Cena takes the title here, as he hasn't held the WWE Championship since October 2007. Plus, with the heel almost guaranteed to win the TLC Match, we need one babyface win.
Winner and NEW WWE Champion: John Cena
Jeff Small: As much as I want to believe that Randy Orton will look like a strong heel in this match, I just do not see it happening. I can see Orton retaining but only by DQ or count-out. Yup, it's lame but the DQ ending has happened the last few SummerSlams and I expect that crappy tradition to continue.
Winner: Randy Orton (by DQ)
Jeff Hardy (c) vs CM Punk - TLC Match
Stephen Randle: Note to WWE Creative: just because we "know" Jeff is leaving, doesn't mean you have to swerve us, we were completely fine with Punk as champion. Instead, we've got Jeff Hardy going from a zero to three-time World Champ inside a calendar year, holding the belt for just under two months. Okay, minor quibble aside, I have six words for you. THIS. IS. GOING. TO. BE. AWESOME.
Wait....yeah, that's right.
Winner: CM Punk
Ari Berenstein:
Do you feel lucky?
Well, do you, Punk? Straight-Edge life
Leads to title win.
Winner: CM Punk regains the WWE World Heavyweight Title
Michael Bauer: Odds CM Punk wins back the belt: OFF. The results is so obvious here, especially with Jeff Hardy coming this week and saying the doctors want him to retire. Not to mention, I'm not sure how much I buy Matt Hardy's sudden face turn. Sure, it might give us Punk and Hardy for a little bit, which I have no issues with, but him as a heel would balance the blue brand again. Anyway, Punk wins clean and gets back a title he should have never lost.
Winner: CM Punk
Len Archibald: Simply put, this is my main event. Punk has been an absolute beast in the ring and on the stick – my wife doesn't pay much attention to wrestling, but she is compelled by the Punk/Hardy feud. The ONLY way this works is Punk winning in DESTRUCTIVE fashion to send Jeff packing and taking on his revenge-filled brother and MORRISON down the line. I know this sounds crazy, but I can actually see them possibly (possibly) making CM Punk their #1 heel going into WrestleMania (where, of course – he'd lose to The Undertaker) – but still, it's nice to think of that as a possibility.
Winner: AND NEW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION – CM Punk
Andy Clark: Part of me wants to be contrarian (and belives Vince does too) and say that Jeff retains at SummerSlam just to surprise people and then he loses it on SmackDown (or better yet Superstars). It also seems way too obvious that Matt will turn on Jeff yet again, but I just can't see it not happening. Even if Jeff were to stick around Punk has more options of who to feud with (Morrison, Mysterio, Undertaker).
Winner and NEW World Heavyweight Champion: CM Punk
Julian Bond: Oh what a great feud. Love to see it conclude here, but hate to see it go. Punk is so sick as a semi-heel now but yet the man hasn't done the one major thing to make every single person hate his guts all the way. So I think that Punk wins in notorious means with the questionable Matt Hardy making an appearance to turn once again on his bro (yea…he's probably playing Jeff…again). Punk takes the belt and becomes mega-heel, Jeff goes out on a long-awaited break, and then comes the latest installment of Matt vs. Jeff probably at the Hell In A Cell PPV in October. Me also hoping for Punk vs. Taker next month….deep hoping.
Winner and NEW World Heavyweight Champion: CM Punk
Michael Weyer: The feud has been terrific but still can't get the feeling WWE has faith in Jeff as a long-term champion. Plus, while Punk is pushed as a heel, he really hasn't done anything truly nasty and thus has fan support. Put it together and it's a title change to let Punk continue his ride at the top.
WINNER and NEW World Heavyweight Champion: CM PUNK BABY!
John Peters: Nearly everyone thought there was no chance that Jeff Hardy was going to walk out of Night of Champions with the belt, but he did. Once again, nearly everyone thinks that there is no chance that Jeff Hardy is going to walk out of SummerSlam with the belt. The real question is will they have Hardy win just so they can shock all of us "smart" fans. I don't think Vince really cares too much about shocking the "smart" fans, and in this kind of match Hardy can take a massive "injury causing" bump to write him out of the storyline.
Winner: CM Punk
Aaron Hubbard: Please let this main event. If this isn't MOTN, I will be very surprised. This has been the best built feud of the year and deserves a big blow off. I think we all know what will happen here.
Winner and NEW World Champion: CM Punk
Jeff Small Raise your hand if you are not excited for this match. If you did, you are lying. If this turns out to be Hardy's final match, you know he will go out with a bang. This feud has been awesome and I'm hoping that the TLC gimmick allows the two to have a memorable encounter. CM Punk should regain his championship before being spooked by the Undertaker! Yes, that's my prediction.
Winner: CM Punk

Listen, Berenstein and Bauer... you guys seriously need to cool it with the haikus and odds making respectively. It's not even remotely interesting. If anything, it makes me want to scroll past your predictions. You guys are trying way too hard to be cute and it's just coming off as forced and lame. Summerslam looks like a pretty decent card. Can't you just predict the matches? True or not when you rely on a stupid gimmick it just makes it seem like you lack the talent to be insightful and interesting on your own merit.
On a different note, can someone explain to me the logic behind people saying there's nothing wrong with Cena winning the spinner WWE title because he hasn't held it in almost two years? I've heard this logic for a while now and I just don't get it. So what if he didn't hold that specific belt? He still had the World title twice in the last year. Does anyone walk around saying that Edge hasn't had too many title reigns because he only held the WWE title 4 times? Those 5 World title reigns still happened!
Honestly, if you want to make a good argument for Cena then find something else to hang your hat on. Trust me, I may not like the guy but at least I know that he has some solid points to back him up besides not having held one specific World title out of the two in almost two years. It's hard to sell people on semantics.

JeriShow is holding them belts til Edge returns and teams up with Christian

Really? Nobody picked Hardy to beat Punk? Remember Batista/Orton at the beginning of the summer? I know it'd be stupid to do the same swerve two times in less than a quarter year, but this is WWE we're talking about.

Meth Hardy contracts ends up After SummerSlam and He HAS TO PAY and DIE in the ring this sunday to put PUNK OVER HUGE as a VICIOUS, MONSTER HEEL....
Mark my words It's gonna be one hell of an orgasm this sunday when The Emo Warrior will get "retire" by The Straight Edge Hero.
Punk is gonna hurt Jeff and even better, all the little kiddies and emo teens in attendance and worldwide BIG TIME.
Will be worth every since cent spent on it.

Hmmm... Matt Hardy has just confirmed in his twitter that Jeff's gonna stay beyond SummerFest.
The Link: http://twitter.com/MATTHARDYBRAND
"Here's an update for the "sheets"-Jeff & I might not team again due to pursuing singles careers. And Jeff will be with WWE after Summerslam."
So Punk wins due to Matt-ferance. Matt - Jeff version 3 starts and Punk - Taker or Punk - Mysterio will start...

Alright, seeing "Column of Honor" pop up has got me thinking...Ari, man, where has it gone? I remember you saying you would scale back the column, but it hasn't shown up since even once.
Still. Punk wins and feuds with Matt until the end of the year when Taker comes back in time for WM.

I see CM Punk losing without Matt Hardy interference. Then, on the following Smackdown, Jeff really sells his injuries. As he gets on the mike to explain himself, Matt comes down and goes from being supportive brother to just give a massive beatdown. Matt blames himself for having faith in Jeff and being disappointed again.

What does it say about RAW if the first thing I thought when I've read Cena vs Orton was "My prediction: who cares?"

Punk to go over & become the huge heel he can be, leading to a title win at breaking point v either Matt,Rey or Morrison before moving onto a cell match with Undertaker.
Posted By: jbardo (Guest) on August 22, 2009 at 09:04 AM
WWE title match will NOT be a clean win. WHC match will be a clean win. DX is a big snore bringing those old farts back together, please HBK turn heel on Trips. UTTT match, would like to see CT win but they probably will not. Did I mention nobody cares about the DX re-reunion? Its like 12 years ago was the beginning and with WWE pg-13 how can they pull off their shenanigans and crap anymore, epic fail!

I can't really believe the Jeff Hardy "get retire" rumors until he actually does leave after Summerslam. You should really save "every since cent" and buy youself an education that brings you to at least a 4th grade level, straight edge doesn't imply saying no to phonics.

Knowing WWE Booking, look for the following:
Khali to win due by Singh turning (which Taker's return will also be a part of the match somehow and lead to a 3 way submission match @ Breaking Point)
Look for Swagger to win and start feuding w/Kofi for the US Title (MVP's next stop--Evan Bourne)
Christian to retain leading a rematch @ Breaking Point
Dolph beat Rey becoming IC Champ(Dolph holds the title for 2 months then loses it to Finley or someone)
Cryme Tyme beats Y2Show and become Tag Champs (Cryme Tyme faces Y2Show again for the titles @ Breaking Point
DX wins to satisfy HHH's ego
Cena wins the title from Orton thanks to DX and Legacy interference (which leads to a 6 man submission elimination tag match against Legacy at Breaking Point)
Finally the TLC match to become a Fatal 4 way between the Hardys, Morrison, and Punk....Morrison causes Jeff to go thru a table (leading to him being carried out (leading to Matt feuding with Morrison for 2 to 3 months)and Punk winning the title and facing Rey @ Breaking Point
In a nutshell a PPV to set up the Gimmick PPV

All you people saying Cena/Orton has a weak build need to realize that when you have a TWO YEAR-LONG RIVALRY going, you don't need a soap opera storyline to sell the match. Seriously, these two have been at eachother's throats since SS '07, at least, maybe earlier. How much more "build" could you want?

Posted By: (guest) (Guest) on August 22, 2009 at 02:40 PM
I see Punk winning with "inadvertant" assistance from Matt Hardy
Then, what I'd like to see come Smackdown, Punk beating Jeff down in the ring, Matt swerve and joins in, Punk takes the mic and proclaims
"Matt has joined with me because your disgusting lifestyle is what has constantly split you two. This is your wake up call, you're a disgrace"
Matt can talk smack whilst beating Jeff down. Punk and Matt destroy Jeff and "seriously injure him".
John Morrison tries to assist, but gets beatdown.
Lights go down, gongs go off, bells chime, arena fills with smoke - Dead Man in the ring to chase off Punk and Matt alliance.
It sets up two new feuds in JoMo / Matt Hardy, CM Punk / Taker.
It gets Jeff written out the same way Y2J took Ken Shamrock out and therefore gets instant heel heat for Matt and Punk.
Then, if Jeff ever decides to come back after 6-12 months off writing poetry, he has an explanation for why he's been gone, rather than having lost his emo smile.

Jeff wins by the skin of his teeth. CM Punk gets piseed and and nealry kills Jeff in some way with the weapons. Then they can run an injury angle and get more heat on Punk.

Is it just me or have they barely hyped this PPV? I read somewhere they really want Summerslam to feel like the second biggest PPV of the year, and here it just feels......completely vanilla. Hell, The only match that really has that big time feel is Hardy/Punk. Everything else (including DX/Legacy) is just kind of there. Here's hoping the show itself managed to deliver.

Kane I think with Mr Sideburns doing the "Paul Bearer" heel turn (Kahli needs to sit down for a year--- his knees buckle bad!)
MVP, I see a heel turn coming so hopefully this is the beginning of it.
Legacy because I think there will be a HBK & HHH fight
Ziggler because (well, I picked Mysterio but what Hubbard said actually makes sense) & if Punk does get it, Punk v Mysterio would be a great PPV match.
CrymeTyme! because if Shaq is comin' back--- he'll need to be escorted by the champs! keeping the Jerishow feud with them alive & hopefully elevating JTG (that's the smaller one, right?)
Regal because Christian is stale as a good-guy... he was great as the anti-hero, doing a-hole things and givin props to the peeps who hated, but eventually loved him... he should move to another show after the loss!
Cena because w Legacy with a win & 'Mr angry cat about to pounce but does zero guy' with a loss can create the downward spiral to one of thee most disappointing factions in WWE since, since... the oddities? no, they were suppossed to be a joke... Slick's stable maybe? ... no, he had the Model Martel plus Power & Glory... I'll keep thinking about it....
Punk because it sets up Punk Vs Undertaker (if he returns) & Jeff Vs Matt one more time before Jeff takes a break.... then we have Zig Vs Morrisson for the IC--- Punk Vs Mysterio if UT isn't back yet then Matt Vs Mysterio (that should be good) Morrison Vs Punk--- all good stuff!
I rambled! I apologize! happy Summerslam each & everyone!
Posted By: theHomewrecker! (Guest) on August 22, 2009 at 06:15 PM
Hardy will win and then drops the title on Raw (what brand extension?) or "retires" for a while as champ which sets up a tournament and an Undertaker win. Jeff comes back somewhere down the line claiming to be the true champ only to get squashed by Cena or Batista. CM Punk is gonna be bussed back to the mid card and then canned. He is to small, Vince has ZERO faith in someone his size when there is not a steroid trial going on.

My predictions:
Kane vs Khali: Kane wins after Runjin Singh betrays Khali.
Jack Swagger vs MVP: MVP wins
DX vs Legacy: DX will OBVIOUSLY win
Mysterio vs Ziggler: Mysterio wins
JeriShow vs Cryme Tyme: JeriShow win
Christian vs Regal: Christian wins
Orton vs Cena: The match ends in a DQ, resulting Orton retaining and leading to some sort of a rematch at Breakign Point (or maybe DX and Cena vs Legacy at Breaking Point)
Jeff vs Punk: Punk wins, possibly after a Matt heel turn attacking Jeff
Posted By: haha (Guest) on August 22, 2009 at 08:42 PM
I don't know if Vince is aware of it, but they're building up something of a Savage vibe for Ziggler. He's getting the "classy" (by current WWE standards, anyway) valet that the audience likes in Maria despite being an asshole, conniving heel. If he gets the I-C belt then that kind of confirms it for me. Not a bad character to borrow from, but it does seem odd given Vince's hatred for all things Savage.

I AGREE!! It's been what....?... not nearly a year? the WWE hasn't built a tag division other than forming Y2J & Show and making everyone believe crimetyme is worth a PPV match... OH! plus they split up Miz & Morrison & the Colons!!... so plenty of tag teams to go around for two titles!!!! that's precious! it is TIME for 2!!! YES--- TWO tag team titles to go around!!
I think Ziggler & Mysterio should come to a draw & both have IC titles... it's about time we see 2 IC champs on Smackdown... it's been what? couple months since the 1 showed up....
MVP Vs Swagger should be a US title fight... Swagger should win & Kofi could be all "what up with that?" --- starting a rivalry with Helms. Swagger can lose his US championship to Air Borne and he can flip & bore everyone while Kofi beats Chavo a'la Hornswoggleness... yes... 2 US champs...
and all 3 brands should have an ECW champion because Christian is so darn entertaining, spread the charisma around!!! smear it like butta!!
Kahli should debut his Bollywood Title at the Slam!!!!!!!!!!! the SLAM, BABY!!! Scattered, Smothered & Covered!!! Reap the whirlwind, IWC, REAP IT!!!
Holy tangent, Batman! ... should be 17 cruiserweight & light heavyweight titles as well, all belonging to Bourne, plus one for Hornswoggle & one for Matt Stryker!!!! Yeah BABY! WOOOO!
& HHH should have a tattoo title around his waist that reads "I have 3 Hs in my name!!!! My name consists of THREE Hs!!! Yet the IWC poops on a name like Dolph Ziggler!!!!"
The man is called Triple H!! not double J, not single w, not quadruple c... that idiot is a bad mamma jamma sporting a name of "hey! I have three H's" call me Triple H for short! awesome! But a name like Dolph??? should have named him octo-L!!!! that we can dig!!!
I drank too much beer so I apologize if I offeneded anyone other than that Don guy ... he got me started on this whole tirade.
& Divas wrestling is eye-candy filler!!! stop analyzing it to the Nth degree like it matters a bit!!!!!!! they're hot ladies who can't wrestle!!! it's OK! Iron Mike Sharpe would roll over in his grave if he witnessed this nonsense!
Give Chris Masters the Hercules Gimmick & Cena is booked for the next 2 months baby!!!
let's all scatter, smother, cover, chunk & pepper Michelle McCool in the eye until then, huh????

Ok Michael Bauer obviously does not really know what odds making is so why make him and this column look stupid with it? For instance he has the odds of a new champion for Ziggler/Misterio at 10 to 1. Then he picks Ziggler to win? So I would win 10 dollars for every one dollar I bet on Ziggler yet you say he is going to win? 10 to 1 that you think there will be a new champion means 1 out of every 10 times Ziggler will win so why didn't you pick Ray? Odds making fail. This annoying fail goes on throughout the column. Odds on Orton retaining 8 to 1? You then pick Orton Did you mean 1 to 8? If I say I have a billion to 1 chance to win the WWE championship at some point in my life and then if I was asked to predict whether I would win and I pick myself to actually win the WWE championship wouldn't I sorry pretty ignorant?

"Me also hoping for Punk vs. Taker next month….deep hoping."
Why hope for this? Taker would kill Punk's credibility, refuse to put him over, and the clash in styles would likely make Punk look bad.
You are dreaming if you think this feud would be anything more than a Taker squash. You kids whine about Hunter, but a glance over Taker's losses shows he is the worst about making anyone look good or putting anyone over.
Punk needs to continue feuding with younger, better guys in real back-and-forth contests.

Here'a a few ideas of post-Summerslam rivalries;
Punk beats Jeff at Summerslam, jumps into a feud with Matt, however Punk does a whole devil's advocate thing getting into Matt's head about how he's the more talented brother etc. Matt eventually joins Punk after failing to beat him, leads to potentially feuds with Morrison and Rey.
Now with DX and Legacy. I kinda like the idea of a cross-brand match at Survivor Series with DX, Cryme Tyme and I don't know Cena vs Orton, Legacy and the Hart Dynasty (come on who wouldn't want to see Legacy and Dynasty! and Dynasty vs Michaels as to be done - maybe that leads to DX vs Dynasty at Wrestlemania, although i could definitely go with Punk vs HBK).

Expect lots of surprises tonight at Summerslam for the WWE PPV in Los Angeles! Nancy O'Dell from Access Hollywood has already said she will be a part with the Divas, but I expect much more as this one's a major PPV for the WWE.
With that having been said, we'll predict tonight's card as we see it now -
MVP vs. Jack Swagger
Swagger already has a clean win on RAW in this feud. I like him to go over again as they continue to build Swagger up to a nice little push into a US Title run down the road.
Winner: Jack Swagger
Kane vs. The Great Khali
Honestly, this is the match I really don't care about on the card. Hopefully, they keep it short with Kane coming out of top.
Winner: Kane
DX vs. Legacy
You'd like to see this feud continue for awhile with others being thrown in so that we could get a nice Survivor Series match going in November. I know, that's asking a lot! Since Legacy got the better of DX Monday night, expect Triple H and HBK to get the duke tonight.
Winner: DX
WWE Unified Tag Team Title Match: Chris Jericho and The Big Show vs. Cryme Tyme
At least they've made Cryme Tyme believable. But, it's Jericho and The Big Show you want on every show.
Winner: Jericho and Show
WWE IC Title Match: Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler
I thought Ziggler would go over last month, so I'm not changing my mind here. Ziggler gets a win to help the push.
Winner: New I-C Champ Dolph Ziggler
ECW Title Match: Christian vs. William Regal
Look for Regal's new stable of Kozlov and Ezekiel to get involved to make it a messy finish. Christian keeps the title but Regal gets a rematch at next month's submission PPV - Breaking Point.
Winner: Christian
WWE Title Match: Randy Orton vs. John Cena
The Champ is Here! Yes, it's Cena time again in the WWE! Orton has survived too long and it's time for him to become a challenger again.
Winner: New WWE Champ John Cena
World Title TLC Match: Jeff Hardy vs. CM Punk
Unless there's a swerve coming, this is Jeff Hardy's last week in the WWE as he's not renewing his contract (we think). So, we get a match of the year candidate in this one and we get CM Punk becoming a 3-time champ. Could we get a Matt Hardy run-in this one? Maybe all that love the last two weeks was a sham and he'll cost his brother the title once more.
Winner: New World Champion CM Punk

Jeff Hardy vs. C.M. Punk in a TLC match for the World Heavyweight Championship: I don't understand why this is considered "Jeff's match" when he has never won one, but Punk has won Money in the Bank twice. Anyway, I am guessing this will go on in the middle of the show and not in its rightful main event slot. I'm guessing they will tear down the house in the obvious match of the night and Punk will walk away with the gold. I'm curious to see if John Morrison and/or Matt Hardy will play a role in the match.
Randy Orton vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship: I predicted a win for Orton and Legacy, however, I am changing my mind because I don't think they will sweep their matches. It would make sense for this to go on last and send the crowd home happy with Cena winning the title. Although I don't want that to happen, it probably will. Cena wins and we probably see a rematch at the next pay-per-view.
Degeneration X (Shawn Michaels and Triple H) vs. Legacy (Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase): Here is my sleeper (and perhaps stupid) pick for the show. I think DiBiase and Rhodes go over here in some screwy fashion. Had Michaels not returned on television and this was his first appearance since WrestleMania, I would pick a DX win. However, a win for Legacy would be huge for them and I think they'll get it. DX will get their win back down the road.
Chris Jericho and Big Show vs. Cryme Tyme for the Unified Tag Team Championships: I am still very disappointed in this match because Jericho is the only reason I am looking forward to it. I think Cryme Tyme will win the tag titles, but not at SummerSlam. JeriShow wins and retains.
Christian vs. William Regal for the ECW Championship: There is money in the babyface chase after a title, so I predict a Regal win and title change here, perhaps with help from his crew of Vladimir Kozlov and Ezekiel Jackson. Then we can look forward to a series of tag team and six man tag matches on ECW. They could even slowly turn Jackson babyface over time.
Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental Championship: One of two things will happen here. Either Mysterio will win and Dolph's push will be halted (for now), or Dolph will win the title. I am going with the latter. Ziggler makes the most of his second PPV IC title shot.
MVP vs. Jack Swagger: I am hoping this will not be a six minute match nobody remembers after it happens. I think if they get eight to ten minutes and the announcers really put them over instead of talking about DX or the Raw main event, this could be a very enjoyable match. I'll go with Swagger winning here and the feud continuing.
Posted By: xXxLenWierzalisxXx (Guest) on August 23, 2009 at 02:36 PM
Kane vs. The Great Khali: I predict this will be the "come down" match after TLC. I think Kane will work his ass off and upgrade Khali to "horrible." I don't know how it will happen, but I say Kane wins or there will be some sort of no contest.
Posted By: xXxLenWierzalisxXx (Guest) on August 23, 2009 at 02:45 PM
You know I am starting to feel like the "DX burial" is a sort of test of character for guys (or a test of allegiance?), get buried by DX and keep a good attitude and good things happen for you (look at Edge & Orton and Morrison to a degree), put up a big stink about it and you're out (Kenny Dykstra),

Has anyone noticed that ever since Freddy Prinze Jr. became a writer on SmackDown! the show has been awesome? I don't know if he is the guiding force behind it, but after seeing him on RAW and seeing what a legit fan he is I wouldn't doubt it. He comes across like the true wrestling fans on 411. For so long I thought the writers on 411 could write for WWE and improve the product... I think we might have that in Prinze. Anyway... my prediction for the SmackDown main event. CM Punk wins in an awesome match, but by "notorious" means which doesn't discredit the awesomeness of the match... which ends up drawing out Matt Hardy to save his brother violently getting into Punk's face only to spin it and turn on Jeff again and finish the job. This could lead to Morrison coming out and attacking Matt, but it could also wait til SmackDown! because I think that this is going to lead to a SWEET upper-midcard fued between Matt and Morrison that will help elevate Morrison to main event status... I mean... Morrison has been actively involved in this for weeks now... it's gotta mean something. And then going back to Punk... he'll probably be leaving with belt and the gongs will go off and it will lead to an awesome fued with 'Taker that will elevate Punk as one of WWE's top dogs. Only maybe though... this could go into so many satisfying directions it's crazy.
P.S. RAW makes me sad

"Jeff goes out on a long-awaited break, and then comes the latest installment of Matt vs. Jeff probably at the Hell In A Cell PPV in October."
Why on Earth would he come back in October? Why even leave?

Bauer i dont know if its been pointed out to you, that you ruined your (only decently funny to begin with) odds making joke by not understanding odds...im assuming when you say "Odds of a total squash match: 25 to 1" you want to say its gonna be a squash...well then the odds would be like 1/5 if it was 25 to 1 i would put 1000 on squash and be 25,000 dollars richer...same with kane khali match

Prinze is no longer a writer for the show, hasn't been for a long while now. Sorry dude.

Let's see
Cena wins and the champ will be here. I'm not a big Cena fan, but I have no problem with this. He deserves it. This Orton title run has pretty much sucked compared to the previous one. Would it be too much to ask a few months down the line for Cena to drop the belt to somebody OTHER than Orton, HHH or Batista. Maybe Swagger, Miz (yes Miz), MVP or another newer star?
If Jeff Hardy is really leaving (can't say I blame him as he has to be hurting from all the bumps), I guess Punk wins this. I hate to see Jeff go. He's earned his moment. Please let's not have Matt turn against Jeff, but rather have Matt take Jeff's place as the face Hardy World Title contender. Oh, and Punk has been pretty entertaining as of late, in my opinion.
Regal has my respect and he deserves a brief world title reign, but I'm not expecting three world title changes tonight. Christian wins and there may be a rematch next month.
Show/Y2J. Is Cryme Time the best WWE can do as a title contender? Hate to say it, but the tag situation sucks in WWE. No reason for the champs to drop the belts here.
Dolph Ziggler seems like a good bet for the IC title. Not a huge Rey fan, but he's helped return the IC belt to prominence. He can go back to World title contender from here.
Kane/Khali. I guess Khali if I have to pick.
Swagger/MVP. Shame somebody has to lose here. I'll go with Swagger.
DX/Legacy. Ted and Cody could be big stars in this company, especially Ted. They are part of the future of WWE, or so it would seem. Time to build new stars. So, basically DX wins. Yawn. Bring Chyna back for this reunion, and I might try to give a damn, but that's not happening.
Not a bad card, but not the best WWE can do. Hopefully, the wrestlers will be safe and put on a good show.

"Michael Weyer: The feud has been terrific but still can't get the feeling WWE has faith in Jeff as a long-term champion. Plus, while Punk is pushed as a heel, he really hasn't done anything truly nasty and thus has fan support. Put it together and it's a title change to let Punk continue his ride at the top."
What show have you been watching?

"You know I am starting to feel like the "DX burial" is a sort of test of character for guys (or a test of allegiance?), get buried by DX and keep a good attitude and good things happen for you (look at Edge & Orton and Morrison to a degree), put up a big stink about it and you're out (Kenny Dykstra)"
That's about the stupidest motherfucking thing they could come up with.
