Match A Day 08.27.09: Week 19 - ROH All Star Extravaganza IV
Posted by Jake Chambers on 08.27.2009
All-Stars! Just like an All-Star game, but for wrestling! You’ve got Lynn, Danielson, McGuiness, Aries, Sasaki, Hero, Necro, Morishima, Strong! Who are these guys? You don’t know? Find out inside!
Previously on Match A Day:
-Jake Chambers swore off watching Pro-Wrestling in regular continuity following the continual letdown of television and pay-per-view, climaxing finally at the super lame Wrestlemania 25.
-Taking a break from reading websites, backstage gossip, and taping and live results, Jake decided to only watch ONE match a day of old matches and international wrestling, while following the American continuity on delay, buying DVDs and borrowing tapes a few months in advance, inspired by the way in which he usually followed Ring of Honor.
-then "Jake" (not his real name) had a breakdown, and me, his wonderful girlfriend Katie (you'll know it's me talking when you see this beautiful red font), has to take care of him 24/7 now, and to keep him happy I let him keep watching one match a day and write out his rambling, moronic thoughts, which I then copy edit into something decent… You're welcome :P
And now MAD Week 19 begins…
[All Matches from ROH All Star Extravaganza IV, December 2008]
Match #122 – Sunday, August 2nd
Chris Hero vs. Erick Stevens
Cheater! I'm sure Chris Hero cheated at the end of this one! The girl from Sweet and Sour, Sara Del Rey, came into the ring and the referee was trying to get her out, and then this loud mouth manager Larry Sweeney gave Chris Hero an illegal object that Hero put on his foot. Then he kicked Erick Stevens in the head and he was out cold! Erick Stevens is too tough to be out after one kick! Hero cheated! I'm not surprised, not surprised at all! You know what they say about cheaters, they never win! Even though Chris won here, he didn't win in life! Cheater!
Match #123 - Monday, August 3rd
Roderick Strong & Brent Albright vs. Kensuke Sasaki & Katsuhiko Nakajima
Great teams! What a great idea to have a kind of big guy partnered with a kind of small guy. Makes for some perfect action in the ring. Great to see four guys who are just interested in being wrestlers and athletes, rather than wanting to cheat or be jerks. And it made for great action in the end, with tons of chops and kicks and knockdowns, and kicks, and no foreign objects… just foreign wrestlers! Boo-yah!
Match #124 – Tuesday, August 4th
Go Shiozaki vs. Takeshi Morishima
What a monster! Takeshi just can't be hurt! No matter what Go did to him in the end, Takeshi kept roaring like a big king lion and the punishment rolled off of him like rain, and then he just killed Go with a clothesline that was like an axe! Why is Go with that annoying Larry Sweeney anyways? And when is Takeshi going to get his rematch for the ROH Title? He deserves it soon, after dominating in this match!
(Oh, Jeff… I mean "Jake," shit the bed today! O_o What a loser! Just thought you'd like to know. I don't want anyone complaining that I'm not earning the free apartment or my cut of the insurance payment he gets since his breakdown)
Match #125 – Wednesday, August 5th
3-Way Elimination Match: American Wolves vs. Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Nigel McGuiness & Claudio Castagnoli
Let's-Go-Bris-Coes! I love the Briscoe Brothers! I didn't think they were gonna win this one, because those damn American Wolves kept attacking the injured knee of Mark Briscoe, basically making this a handicap match. Of course, Jay Briscoe held his own against two guys, as he always does.
What sucks about the incredibly jerky team of Davey and Eddie, is just how lame it was that they went after Mark's knee, attacking him from behind and on the outside. The Briscoes are tough, but they certainly wouldn't focus on an injury to win a match, that's cheap.
And, oh yeah, burn on those loser Europeans, Nigel and Claudio! Claudio got caught with a roll up early and they were eliminated first! Haha! They were so pissed off too! I loved it! Go back to Europea you stinking America haters!
Match #126 – Thursday, August 6th
Naomichi Marufuji vs. Austin Aries
Brilliance! That's what you get when you have two great athletes who want to go out and have a hard hitting, but clean and fair contest. There were just so many moves and more moves in this match, it was like watching two master chefs cook meals in competition! Hey, that would be a great idea for a TV show! Marufuji won with a jumping and spinning move that was so crazy, it cannot be explained in simple English words! Time to learn Japanese!
Match #127 – Friday, August 7th
Kevin Steen, El Generico & Necro Butcher vs. The Age of the Fall (Jimmy Jacobs, Tyler Black & Delirious)
The Age of the Fall are gonna fall! I wish, but not in this one, because they came out and wrestled pretty good, which is pretty rare I think. Jimmy and Tyler didn't use any weapons or brawl into the crowd. Although they almost walked out at the beginning because Necro had a chair in the ring and was going to knock them all out, because he doesn't care about the rules, but in a good way!
I love that Necro Butcher so much, he's like the new Hacksaw Jim Duggan! In the end, I couldn't believe those stupid American Wolves ruined this match with their cheating too! They hit Kevin with a pipe and he got pinned because of it. I'll tell you what, when Kevin recovers, it's gonna be Ov-ah for the A of the F!
Match #128 – Saturday, August 8th
Jerry Lynn vs. Bryan Danielson
Incredible! What more can you say about two legends going toe-to-toe in one of the classiest, back and forth contests in the history of pro-wrestling! Jerry Lynn is a true legend and he shows his stuff here, absorbing punishment, escaping submissions, high flying, and hitting hard. He lost when Bryan moved his shoulder at the last second after dueling small packages, but either man could have won this one, it was just that close.
Ring of Honor definitely is a place where wrestlers can pretty much come to compete without a lot of drama or politics or too many jerks getting in the way of clean athletic competition, like this one!
Congratulations on another fantastic DVD release from ROH. With a star-studded line-up like this, this was easily the best All Star Extravaganza yet!

My girlfriend Katie showed me a great article online recently about SummerSlam 2002. What a fantastic writer, he's right on about everything he's got to say about the greatest SummerSlam ever!
Did you see all those amazing ROH photos! They all come from this awesome photographer Scott Finelstein and his incredible website, so check it out!
Alright Jake - this is starting to turn into Hornswoggle vs. Chavo. Amusing the first few weeks - but tiresome after the third or fourth week.

jake, enough with the exclamation marks after every sentence. nothing you write is really that interesting anyways. the only reason people go to your columns is to shit on you for being the writer that you are..

'Writer' seems fairly generous at this point.
