The Triple Threat 9.06.09: The 155th Edition - Nigel McGuiness To WWE, Rey Mysterio Wanting To Quit, Drew McIntyre, More
Posted by David Martell on 09.06.2009
This week we talk about Nigel McGuiness going to the WWE, rumors of Rey Mysterio wanting to quit, John Morrison winning the Intercontinental Title, Drew McIntyre making a statement on Smackdown, and Angelina Love getting released by TNA. The Legacy is our Superstar Highlight. Please enjoy!
Topic # 1 What are your thoughts on Nigel McGuiness going to the WWE?
David Martell: This is great news for WWE fans but not so great for ROH. Nigel is a great talent who has exceptional skill in the ring and is even decent on the mic. I know a lot of people are angry about WWE "raiding" ROH but do you really blame them? They are picking up the best wrestlers in the world and I wouldn't consider that a bad thing. Nigel and Danielson have already done almost about everything you can do on the indy circuit. I cant call them sell outs when they are just trying to take on new challenges. A lot of people are even claiming that this is the death of ROH. I also don't see that happening. If we know anything about ROH, it is that they are excellent at finding talented wrestlers. Yeah, they may lose their top draws but that doesn't mean someone wont take their place. There are plenty of wrestlers out there who are hungry at the chance to show off their talent. I can only see WWE maybe picking up two more guys from ROH and they are Chris Hero and Austin Aries. This is just something the WWE has always done. If you really want to take a trip through time WWE took Hulk Hogan from the AWA and Stone Cold from ECW. I am not guaranteeing that Nigel and company will become stars of that caliber but I can say they have a fair chance of making a mark in the WWE.
Alex Mattis: What can really be said about this one? This is an incredibly surprising announcement, especially coming just a week after the Danielson news broke. I suppose this shows how the E views ROH exactly and I'm afraid this could be the beginning of a WCW-ECW or WWF-everyone else type deal. I don't want to use the word "raid" but something along those lines. As for Nigel in the E... I can't wait to see what happens. Being a fan of Nigel for six years I've always told people that he has the look, size, style, and mic skills to make it in the E. The question now is will the E give him a real opportunity? While most of Nigel's lariats will have to be retired I can't wait to see him tear it up on Raw or Smackdown, although more than likely he'll end up on "ECW." Congrats go out to McGuinness for his signing and, like I did with Danielson, I have to give props and thanks to Nigel for what his done with his time in Ring Of Honor. More than anyone else Nigel gave his body and soul to that company and its fans and his time in that company is as important as anyone else's.
Zach Brown: This is the best news I've heard since...last week when Bryan Danielson signed. To quote his recent promos with Tyler Black, Nigel kept his eye on the ball. Nigel cuts great promos, has damn excellent matches, and he's definitely one of the top 3 wrestlers for me on the indy scene. Now the only acquisition WWE should concentrate on is Austin Aries. Some people may see this as WWE poaching the ROH roster. But that's just not true in my eyes. Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness are two guys that were destined for greater things. Did anyone honestly think that these two guys were set to live out their entire careers on the indy scene? It was only a matter of time before these guys were WWE-bound. So I don't frown upon WWE wanting to pick these guys up. It's an exciting time for wrestling because after the success of CM Punk, WWE clearly wants to give a few of these big indy names a chance. I admire that, and I look forward to seeing what WWE will do with Nigel. On another note, it makes me wonder which wrestlers are going to be the new faces of ROH. Tyler Black? The guy needs a serious shot of charisma. And they already have a retirement storyline for Jerry Lynn. It would be cool to see the Briscoe brothers be the faces of ROH, or Chris Hero if WWE doesn't snatch him up. Or maybe Eddie Kingston. Something about saying, "I'm gonna rape your face" during his promos makes me think that WWE isn't going to be clamoring to sign him.
Topic # 2 There are rumors going around that Rey Mysterio might quit the WWE because of his suspension. Your thoughts?
David Martell: This would be quite the dumb decision if Rey decided to quit the E. He has probably had one of the best years of his career in 2009 and a one month suspension wont hold him back for long. I believe he is mad at how WWE handled the whole situation but the fact is he should have had his prescriptions. Unfortunately his name is not Batista or Triple H so wellness won't avoid him. I believe that the majority of people believe that WWE is unfair about their wellness policy and I am in that category, but wrestlers in the WWE should understand how it works and realize they need to have their shit together before wellness bites them in the ass. Rey will come back in a month and be as popular as ever. He should try to enjoy this mini vacation and come back at the same speed he's been going since the beginning of this year.
Alex Mattis: Well it sounds like Rey Rey is about pissed pissed about how the E has handled this entire situation. I don't really know the entire situation so I'm not really who's to blame but it seems like the E would want to do everything possible to settle a situation like this with ease with a star like Mysterio. I doubt it will add up to anything and I highly doubt that Rey will follow through and actually quit the company but if that's what he chooses to do I'm sure he knows he won't have any problems finding work elsewhere.
Zach Brown: If Rey quits, it would be a huge mistake. Plain and simple. First of all, how is it that Rey couldn't produce the prescription in time? Did WWE give him like 15 minutes to show the paperwork? It's just bs. Rey should have known to keep a prescription like that on him whenever he traveled the country. It's just common sense when you are an athlete that is constantly being drug tested. So for him to claim that he was treated unfairly or whatever else...it's just plain dumb. Rey should have kept his mouth shut and served the suspension because, much like Jeff Hardy, the guy won't lose fans over a wellness violation. What would make him lose fans is doing something like quitting WWE much like Booker T did back when he faced a wellness violation. Rey is a huge star in WWE, but (hypothetically speaking) how many fans would actually follow him if he jumped to TNA? It would be a huge acquisition for TNA, but would it boost their ratings? I sincerely doubt it would be a crazy jump in viewers.. Rey has been having a phenomenal year, no doubt about it. This is definitely a setback for him, but Rey should just take it like a man and come back in a month stronger than ever. Maybe Rey feels wronged in some way, but leaving the biggest wrestling company in the world over something like a 30 day suspension? Yeah THAT will show them, Rey. Not smart.
Topic # 3 John Morrison won the Intercontinental Title this past week on Smackdown. How do you feel about this?
David Martell: It seems that John Morrison is always winning titles by unfortunate circumstances. He won the ECW title because of the Chris Benoit happenings and now hes won the intercontinental title because of Rey's suspension. Of course this isn't exactly a bad thing, I am just sure that he would of liked to win the title on his own merit. That being said, the match he had with Rey on Smackdown was one of the best I have seen all year. Morrison proves time in and time out that he has what it takes to put on great matches and we all know he has what it takes to make it to the main event. Unfortunately, he probably wont be main eventing until the WWE thinks that CM Punk is fully established as the face of Smackdown. The feud he had with Jeff Hardy and the one he's about to have with the Undertaker will cement that. Luckily for Morrison, the intercontinental title has been repackaged, and is now a title that is worth having thanks to Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio. This now leads us to a feud between Morrison and Ziggler, which I guarantee was going to be scheduled eventually down the road. This is going to be an excellent opportunity for both men as both are the fastest rising stars in the company minus Punk. I look forward in seeing how Ziggler and Morrison work together and this feud can further their development into the main event scene on Smackdown.
Alex Mattis: I suppose it's always nice to add a title on your resume but I was under the impression the John was on his way to being a full-time main eventer. That seemed to be what the E was leaning towards then he wins the IC title the belt that has always been looked at as the mid-card belt, kind of a head scratcher. There's nothing wrong with him have the IC strap as it still shows the company has some faith in him; I'm just curious how long he is going to have it for and how long it is until the E boosts him up in the main scene.
Zach Brown: Before I even get into John Morrison winning the title, I have to say that this is easily one of the best matches of the year. Rey and Morrison pulled out all of the stops, and there wasn't a single problem with the match. Easily 4 stars, and maybe even 4 and a half. I hope Rey comes back, but even if Rey does end up quitting, you can't say he didn't give it his all in this match. As for Morrison, this guy deserves the belt. He's held it before and all, but the IC title seems much more important nowadays, partly due to great matches like Rey and Morrison put on. But if you had asked me last week who I thought should hold the IC title in Rey's absence, I would have said Dolph Ziggler in a heartbeat. I still kind of feel partial to Ziggler, but when I see Morrison put on a show like he did, it becomes a hard point to argue. Ziggler will get the belt in due time. So for now, I am more than satisfied with the state of the Intercontinental Championship.
Topic # 4 What are your thoughts on Drew McIntyre stint on Smackdown?
David Martell: This kid has something special. I know we have only seen a double arm DDT and a few short promos but I have a feeling that he has some great talent. I am actually surprised that the WWE brought up another wrestler from development and even more surprised that they put him on Smackdown. I think that McIntyre will be a great edition to the Smackdown roster and for the mid card. With injuries, suspensions and a leave of absence, the Smackdown roster is hurting. This gives the chance for McIntyre to become a bigger part of the show and I think he mad a very well executed arrival onto Smackdown. I cant wait to see this guy wrestle.
Alex Mattis: The wrestlers on the E's payroll seem to be getting younger and younger. This 24-year-old rode into the E with a very good looking track record and is looking to build upon it. He's comes from a solid wrestling background and from a part of the world that has very solid roots in pro wrestling. Fool's got some solid charisma and starting off heel is always a good way to test whether or not someone can get over. It looks like we can expect a feud with flippity-floppity man R-Truth, so it should be interesting to see what he brings to Smackdown.
Zach Brown: This was probably one of the single best debuts I have ever seen. I hate R-Truth, and seeing this happen was pure gold. R-Truth going around singing his usual crap, until he enters the ring and then, "What's Up!?" DEATH. First of all, this Drew McIntyre kid looked like a jobber through and through because he was new and randomly going up against R-Truth. I guess I learned not to judge a book by it's cover. Not only did he murder R-Truth, but he cut a very promising promo as well. And what did he do the week after that? Same damn thing. Genius. His double arm DDT is pretty sick as well. It remains to be seen if he possesses good in-ring skills, but you can't be much worse than R-Truth. For now, I'm really digging this kid.
Topic # 5 What are your thoughts on Angelina Love getting released from TNA?
David Martell: Well this kind of sucks for TNA and Love. It is her fault though because she didn't get her work visa renewed. You would think that someone on a work visa would pay attention to this kind of thing. The Beautiful People made it far in the tag tournament for the new Knockouts tag team titles and without them who knows what's going to happen. They were probably meant to win the belts anyways. Hopefully she can eventually get all of it worked out and go back to TNA in the near future.
Alex Mattis: NOOO!!! That Ass Squared is now debunked, what a sad day this for fans and TNA cameramen alike. If I could be serious for a moment though, I don't think this is a horrible scenario for Love. She is rather talented at what she does. She is solid in the ring and has some pretty good mic skills and of course she is ridiculously hot. If she gets her work visa and all her documentation in order she shouldn't have much trouble finding new work and at this point it looks like getting away from TNA is a good thing. While I may miss the best entrance in wrestling I wish the best of luck to Love in the future.
Zach Brown: This definitely caught me off guard. Angelina Love is a great asset to the Knockout division, and it's incredibly unfortunate that this had to happen. All I know is that it's some sort of complication with her work visa. It sucks that a technicality like that can cause your release from a company like TNA. But the fact of the matter is, she should have taken care of this a long time ago instead of letting it get to this point. It just sucks. The Beautiful People are one of the few consistently entertaining parts of TNA in my opinion, and it sucks that Love can't continue it. All in all, I hope she gets this straightened out because I just don't see her being as successful as she was when she was in TNA.
Superstar Highlight
The Legacy
Our thoughts on The Legacy.
David Martell: When the Legacy started, I though this would be a great way to put over both Dibiase and Rhodes. Little did I know, they would just be pawns of Orton and constant jobbers. In a way they have become more prominent on the RAW roster. Both men have had their own special episode of RAW that was basically meant to put them over as top competition. I know that eventually Legacy will break up but I don't even see that helping Ted and Cody. If they break off from Legacy they are only going to be apart of the huge midcard on RAW that isn't going anywhere. Look what happened to Jack Swagger. He was coming off an excellent run on ECW and now he just sits in limbo on RAW. Another thing that hurts Legacy is that they almost NEVER win a match clean. When was the last time Randy Orton won a title match clean without interference from the Legacy? It is getting ridiculous and very bland. Until the WWE decides to build more stars on RAW, the Legacy will be nothing more than a team of mediocrity.
Alex Mattis: I've always been a fan of the idea behind the stable; the 2nd and 3rd generation young guys with no respect for the prior generation. I've never really been high on Orton being the leader of the group, the way the E built him made him seem like he needed no one and didn't give a shit about anyone so to have him "lead" some guys was rather confusing. That aside I think the three have worked together very well despite being booked poorly at times and his road bumps like Manu. I would like to see some eventual expansion; I've always had my fingers crossed that the E would bring in Mike DiBiase for the group, but for the time being I think "The Legacy" has already passed some of the initial expectation people had for the stable.
Zach Brown: In concept, Legacy should be a fantastic stable. A group of only second and third generation superstars? Sounds great. It's in the execution that WWE has often dropped the ball with Legacy. I have to say that Legacy has been down a rocky road since their debut. The beginning was awful for two reasons: Sim Snuka and Manu. But mostly Manu. So thankfully, someone in WWE realized that they needed to trim the fat. Then Legacy became the job squad to HHH week after week. Shortly after that, Legacy entered a career changing feud by jobbing to Batista week after week. The epitome of this was when Batista was told he'd be facing Ted DiBiase, and gave a facial expression as if he was saying, "Yeah, big fuckin' deal." For several months, all Legacy would do is job and job and job. They were Orton's lackeys and nothing more. Within the last month however, they seem to be getting a fairer treatment. They really gave DX a run for their money at Summerslam, and they didn't seem like the regular old jobbers anymore. But they certainly are teasing the breakup of Legacy a lot these days. Now I wish they had nabbed the unified tag belts before they even started teasing a breakup, but that's besides the point. I happen to think that the way they are handling this particular storyline is pretty epic. Did you hear the deafening chants for Cody Rhodes after Orton gave Dusty the RKO? It gave me chills. Basically, I go back and forth with Legacy. One day, I'll think that Legacy is the least successful stable in history. Then I remember stables like New Breed and X-Factor. And then some weeks, I think they are awesome. In the end, Legacy is decent enough, but I can't wait for these guys to have singles careers, because they are both future main eventers in my eyes.
That is it for this week. Please feel free to leave comments at the bottom of the page and have a great week in wrestling! CYA!
It's totally a raid - I'm guessing ROH weren't "compensated" by WWE for such a high profile raid on their main event talent. How McMahon has the nerve to moan and complain about Bischoff "Stealing" his talent in the 90's is completely amazing to me.

"at this point it looks like getting away from TNA is a good thing."
Go to hell, Alex! I guess you would rather have her on WWE programming jobbing to girls who arent even close to her level in the ring. Go call Gail Kim and see how that is working for her.

If Rey leaves they should do whatever they can to sign Mistico, that guy is unreal, like Rey pre roids '95 unreal.

"Unfortunately his name is not Batista or Triple H so wellness won't avoid him."
Question: has there ever been evidence that Batista or HHH have some means of circumventing the wellness policy, or is this more political bombast from those upset that their favorites aren't multiple times world champions?

I Always Thought That Sim and Manu Shoulda Made An Islanders Type Team And Have Them Fued With Cody and Ted.

"Go call Gail Kim and see how that is working for her."
GK's rumored TNA salary: $75,000/year
GK's rumored WWE salary: at least $300,000/year
If true, I doubt she regrets the move all that much.

You guys act like McIntyre hasn't been brought up before. Is everyone's memory really that poor?
Posted By: roottootfreshfrootboot (Guest) on September 06, 2009 at 08:47 PM
j westmoreland, you are a moron. in wwe, gail kim is making 300,000 per year vs. 75,000 in stupid tna.
wrestling is fake so wins and losses are menaingless; the money is what counts.
wwe does not want anglina. she is too ugly to be a wwe diva and all her tattoos make her look trashy.
she is stupid. she worked 2 years for tna with no visa. she will likely be banned from the usa for a while as punishment.

Okay Rey Mysterio makes more money for the WWE right now then Batista does so how the fuck does it matter what Rey's name is? Just because Batista has (surprisingly) NOT been caught with Wellness does not mean he is immune to it. I am so fucking sick of IWC jagoffs saying Wellness is corrupt because Batista hasn't been caught. Batista may be legit or is using a legal and/or untraceable hormone to help. But he is innocent until proven guilty. As for HHH he has dropped muscle mass and does work out alot. He's also representing a company and is married into the business, so he know he can't do something stupid like this.
In short, if they aren't caught then they didn't do it.

#1. This couldn't have happened any sooner (well, technically, it could have happened back in June). Compared to Danielson, Nigel is custom-built for the WWE, specifically RAW. He's got the look, the charisma, the build, and the talent of a RAW main eventer. I guarantee this guy is going to be a bigger success than AmDrag...and that's saying something, especially considering how much more I love Danielson.
#2. Let him. He can either go to Mexico and be huge just down there until he retires or he can go fail in TNA and make 1/4 what he does with Vince. He's been injury prone his entire run and is running his time thin. He's one serious knee injury from not being able to walk, so, adding on Wellness violations, Rey's becoming a liability for the WWE...let him walk. Besides, they have another masked guy waiting in the wings as it is (Dos Caras Jr.).
#3. Should have been done months ago. Next question.
#4. So far it's already better than his stint on RAW. That should tell you enough. However, the guy is a DAMN good talent and should only help boisture this new European fetish Vince has right now.
#5. TNA is in BIG BIG trouble with this...not because they lost 1/2 of the (presumed soon-to-be) KO Tag Champs, but they may get into some federal trouble for essentially hiring an illegal. Her visa died with her WWE deal, so she's been stealing taxpayer money for two years now, and Uncle Sam doesn't like that. I hope she gets everything straightened out with little problems, but this could be DISASTEROUS for TNA.
Legacy: It's run it's course. Cody has the potential for a singles breakout with an Orton feud and Ted...well, Ted sucks. Seriously. He hasn't impressed me since day 1 and simply looks like the retarded love child of Orton and Mr. Kennedy. Put his brothers Mike and Bret with him to make the new Million Dollar Corporation and call it a day.
Posted By: Ramsey (Guest) on September 06, 2009 at 11:08 PM
I agree... Cody is the breakout star of Legacy, not Ted. Of course, knowing WWE, Ted will turn face and proceed to squash Cody for 3 months straight in an attempt to get him over, it will fail miserably, and then you'll have Ted, who's been pushed but no one cares, and Cody, who people want to care about but he's been buried. Since Ted DiBiase is the only midcarder WWE seems serious about elevating, his failure will lead to another 5 years of Cena/HHH/Orton/Batista matches. Woot.

The McIntyre debut was fucking gold. I always wanted to see one of those idiotic debuts of retarded new gimmicks for Zach Ryder or whomever end up with the jobber just beating the living shit out of the guy. Cudos to the E for pulling it off properly. :p

I just wonder should WWE have come calling to Love, mayyyybe she decided to let that paperwork expire in order for TNA to have to release her and WWE to swoop in?
Posted By: Col (Guest) on September 07, 2009 at 07:48 AM
The IC title on Morrison is a good move, i have no doubt he will be a main eventer next year but for now seeing him defend the IC gold in good matches is the right way to go, plus the title has been booked brilliantly this year so it looks more important then it has done in years.

Um..Lita?
And yes, WTF @ folks not remembering Drew's initial Smackdown run. *smh*
