411’s Buy or Sell 9.18.09: Nigel and Danielson to Battle One Last Time, Young Bucks Face The Briscoes, CHIKARA Says Goodbye to Danielson, and More!
Posted by Michael Bauer on 09.18.2009

Welcome everyone to Week 125 of BUY or SELL. For those of you who haven't been with us since the beginning, here's the Reader's Digest version of what this column is all about. BUY or SELL is very much like 411's long-running Fact or Fiction column. The main difference is that BUY or SELL focuses on topics like the U.S. Independent scene, Lucha Libre, Japanese Wrestling and pretty much anything else that isn't mainstream wrestling, WWE and or TNA. This allows for these areas to get a bit more press and for you, our loyal readers, to learn even more about the sport of professional wrestling.

BANNER!

(Special thanks to Jasper Gerretsen)

  • With The Colony as new champs and F.I.S.T. having a title shot, CHIKARA should extend this feud all the way to the end of their season.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. This has been one of the hottest feuds in CHIKARA history, and even though it seemed to have ended with the mask vs. hair match, I think that adding the tag titles to the mix will be enough to keep things interesting. There are plenty of combinations for singles, tag, trios and atomicos matches that haven't been done yet (I'm well aware that F.I.S.T. is a three man unit, but there are enough strong heels that could be added for an atomicos match). Headlining the season finale with the tag title match will be a great way to close off the season, with CHIKARA's top babyface unit taking on the top heel unit.

Alex Mattis : BUY. Total buy here. Arguably the two most important teams in the company's history and the most consistent performers in CHIKARA could surely produce a great program together and give much intrigue to future shows. The feud could have longevity and not see FIST win the strap until the big payoff match. Great tag team feuds are few and far between these days, but the ones that are pulled off well are amazing to watch. These two teams are ones that could pull off the "great tag team feud."

    1 for 1.

  • Mike Quackenbush should have stepped aside and let Jigsaw get the pinfall on Bryan Danielson in his CHIKARA farewell.

Jasper Gerretsen : SELL. CHIKARA has worked very hard to reintroduce Jigsaw as their top babyface after his return to the company in late 2008, and he has gotten over as one of the company's top babyfaces despite his apparent betrayal of Quackenbush and the principles CHIKARA was founded on. Just being in the match was a huge rub for Jigsaw, as people would probably have been just as happy with a Quackenbush/Danielson singles match. Judging from the reports, Jigsaw got all his usual spots in, and the match itself was great, and he got over enough without actually being involved in the pinfall.

Alex Mattis : SELL. Would it have been a great moment to see Jigsaw get the pin on Dragon? Sure. But the fact of the matter is Quack is CHIKARA more than anybody else out there and what was wanted in Dragon's final appearance in the company was for him to put over CHIKARA. What better way to do that than have Quack pick up the W? On a mark level, it just kind of cool to see Quack get the win over Dragon in one of his final independent matches. Quack has never truly received the praise he deserves for his contributions and the epic Quckenbush-Dragon match that many hoped for never really happened; so to see Danielson wrap up his time in the company like this, I felt, was proper.

    2 for 2.

  • Considering all the recent injuries, Ring of Honor should not let Tyler Black wrestle again until he is 100%.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. While I understand the appeal of having one last match between Danielson and Black to wrap up the saga, the departure of both Danielson and McGuinness means that ROH is in for a few months of rebuilding, and Tyler Black could be a huge part of that. I understand that people might be feeling a bit burned out on him after he was pushed so heavily for the past few months, but no matter how they plan on using him, they'll need him as healthy as possible.

Alex Mattis : BUY. The guy has proved his worth in the company, but I can't help but think he still feels like he needs to prove himself and if he gets hurt it will just show his dedication. I may be completely off but the guy has just gone 10000000% since he arrived in the company and has held nothing back; putting his body at risk over and over and over and over again. The best way to solve the problem of his constant state of injury is to keep him away from the ring long enough to fully recover physically and mentally and come back to the company with a new approach.

    3 for 3.

  • The series of matches between The Young Bucks vs. The Briscoes will establish The Young Bucks as serious competitors in ROH.

Alex Mattis : BUY. How can working with the Briscoes in ROH not get you over as serious competitors? Irish Airborne, AOTF, etc. all greatly benefited from just stepping in the ring with Jay & Mark. The Briscoes are the true roots that are left in Ring of Honor and putting some young bucks (PUN!!!) will do nothing but help them be seen as a new top, serious, team in ROH. Almost any tag team that has spent time in the ring with the Briscoes anywhere in the world have left a better team and with the stocks raised.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. ROH has been moving away from the spotfests for quite some time now, which makes The Young Bucks such a breath of fresh air. They are a bit of a throwback to the tag team scrambles of early ROH, with the main difference being that The Young Bucks are extremely good at what they do. They hit all their high flying moves with incredible crispness, and I literally can't remember the last time I saw them truly botch a move. The whole eighties white-meat babyface rockers gimmick might look boring on paper, but they've definitely managed to make it work. In the current ROH landscape they truly stand out as unique, and ROH would be wise to do what they could to establish them.

    4 for 4.

  • ROH made the right call in reshuffling the Glory By Honor VIII card to allow one last match between Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness.

Alex Mattis : BUY. Absolutely! This is guaranteed to be an extremely emotional affair that will see two of the most important figures in the company's history giving one last great match to the fans that made them. ROH created a "best case scenario" with the addition of this match and I doubt too many are going to be complaining with the "reshuffling" of the card. These two engaged in some of the best matches this country has seen in quite sometime and deserve to exit with each other. They made each other better, they made ROH better, and this is the right thing to be done.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. Glory By Honor has always been one of ROH's biggest shows, and this year's card already looks incredibly stacked. It's the perfect stage for one last match between two of the greatest workers ever to come through ROH. With Nigel's sparse ROH bookings during his last few weeks on the independent scene being rather sparse, I think ROH is justified in moving the Danielson/Aries title match. Obviously Danielson and Aries have history too, mainly stemming from their run as Team Work in 2007 and their best of three series in the same year, but it's simply not on the same level as Danielson/McGuinness.

    5 for 5.

  • Davey Richards will be Dragon Gate's first Open The Freedom Gate Champion.

Alex Mattis : BUY. Just seems to make the most sense at this point. Davey wrestles an almost flawless Japanese-American hybrid style and I assume that's a trait that Dragon Gate want their champions to have. Other than they the name recognition that Richards could add to the title has to be taken into consideration. While he may not be a huge name in the US, plenty of wrestling fans know who Davey Richards is. Tack on the way he's been booked in the company thus far and it just seems to make sense.

Jasper Gerretsen : BUY. The problem with this hypothesis is that we have absolutely no idea who is booked for the big title tournament. However, following the last PPV taping it's become obvious that Richards has been pegged as the top American wrestler in Dragon Gate USA, and at this point I think it's safe to say that if he doesn't actually win the Open the Freedom Gate Championship, he'll at least be involved in the first feud over it. Richards has come a very long way over the past three years, starting with his run in the No Remorse Corpse and then Sweet 'N Sour Incorporated and The American Wolves, and he's been showing just as much progress as a singles wrestler. At this point, I think it's safe to say that he'd be ready to carry a company as its top guy.

    6 for 6!!!

The 125th edition of BUY or SELL finishes at 6 for 6 as these two just agree with everything! Stay tuned for next week we will be hosting a very special roundtable in honor of both Nigel McGuinness and Bryan Danielson.

I personally would rather have Shingo be the first champ after losing two PPV matches, but I am fine with Davey as well.

Could you guys please put a spoiler warning or something on these things before talking about Chikara. Some of us follow the product based on the dvds. I did not yet know that Colony were the new champs. i know its kinda difficult when the dvd comes out so far after the show is taped , but you can at least try.
