The Piledriver Report 10.07.09: SmackDown Cena?
Posted by Ronny Sarnecky on 10.07.2009

They did it! They did it! I can't believe they finally did it! The WWE was finally turned me into a huge John Cena fan. How exactly did they do it you may be asking yourself? Did I turn into a John Cena mark thanks to his recent match against Randy Orton inside a Hell in a Cell? Nope. Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed the match a lot. However, I am not a Cena fan because of his "tremendous" working ability. Did he deliver an emotion "Austin 3:16 says I just kicked your ass" level promo that has me inspired to become a member of the Chain Gang? Sorry, it's not that either. Could it be his endless charity work with organizations the like of the Make a Wish Foundation, or his tireless work ethic that has him on the road promoting the WWE's product even during his off days? While both are admirable traits, and I have the utmost respect for Cena because of it, that isn't making me a fan either.

WHY ROOT FOR JOHN CENA

On this past week's episode of "Monday Night RAW," John Cena challenged Randy Orton to yet another WWE World title match. Once again, he told Orton that if the "Legend Killer" loses, he would no longer get a shot at the WWE World championship. Randy Orton agreed to the stipulation as long as he could throw in a stipulation of his own. If Orton retains his title at the WWE Bragging Rights pay per view, John Cena must leave RAW.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please God, no! It's bad enough that the WWE threw Batista on the SmackDown! brand last week, can they really do it to me twice in a month's time span? I love SmackDown! SmackDown! is, to quote The Miz, AWESOME! The beauty of SmackDown! is that it is a completely different telecast from its RAW counterpart. While RAW has all of the household names, and the sizzle, SmackDown! has the steak. If you want celebrity guest hosts and story telling, tune into RAW. However, if you want wrestling and old school angles, then SmackDown! is your show.

THE WWE ALTERNATIVE

The WWE has done something that TNA has failed to do. With three television programs, the WWE has given the fans a different variety to offer the fans. Event the ECW brand differentiates from the two senior brands. ECW is the "not yet ready for prime time players" brand. This is the brand, for the most part, that the developmental students go to when then are ready to move from Florida to the main circuit.

Despite the fairly regular complaining that I do in regards to the WWE, I like that there are three different formats to choose from. While I prefer a professional wrestling show that features good, solid wrestling, I do understand the need for an alternative show, like what we currently see on RAW today. I may not like it, but others do. There are fans out there that love the catchphrases of DeGeneration X. They laugh at the juvenile jokes that are littered throughout John Cena's promos. They pop or boo each celebrity guest host, depending on who the person is that is hosting that night.

Ever since the Monday Night Wars, people have been conditioned to know that Monday night is wrestling night. It doesn't matter if you are a loyal follower, or just want to see what is going on while you were away. You know that if you need to catch up on the going ons of the WWE, all you need to do is turn on the TV on a Monday night, and you will be able to find it on the television. RAW is the casual fan's show, and like it or not, this is the kind of fan that Vince is trying to attract. I don't like it, and grit my teeth at most of the segments on the show. However, I know there is light at the end of the tunnel. That light being my favorite Friday night wrestling show.

Of course, I am talking about SmackDown! SmackDown! is the show built for the die hard, loyal wrestling fans. Earlier this year, the Friday night roster consisted of Jeff Hardy, CM Punk, Rey Mysterio, Jr., Chris Jericho, John Morrison, Edge, the Hart Dynasty, and the up and coming Dolph Ziggler. Unless you watch the WWE regularly, these men, who are the foundation of the brand, would not be known by the casual observer who knows of only "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and Hulk Hogan.

The last time SmackDown! was a true alternative to RAW was when they had the original "SmackDown! Six," of Edge, Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Jr., and Chavo Guerrero. Like today, the SmackDown! six made that show the "wrestling show," while RAW provided the "name," or "star" talent, so to speak. SmackDown! , during that time was the can't miss show of the week. Same goes for the SmackDown! brand today. If I miss SmackDown!, I feel guilty about it.

SCREWING UP THE "B" SHOW

Every time I hear rumors about Vince wanting to "shake things up," the same thought comes to my mind. "Whatever you do, please DO NOT SCREW UP MY SHOW!" You can have RAW. Do whatever you want with it. Hell, make Hornswaggle the champ on the show for all I care. Just leave SmackDown! alone. The "B" show is so good right now, that I knew Vince would mess with it.

First, he starts showing up on SmackDown! Definitely not a good sign. Plus, what kind of dumb storyline is he in? He puts Teddy Long on probation because he is not a good General Manager. The mark in me constantly shakes my head at this. How could Mr. McMahon complain at the job Teddy is doing when he is running the best wrestling show on TV. Even though Vince showed up on SmackDown!, at least he isn't a focal point of the show like he was on RAW. That's good. I can live with that.

However, with the lack of main event "name" faces on the brand, the WWE decided to move Batista over from RAW! I understand that he is a big name, but I don't understand the fascination with "The Animal." In my eyes, he's this generation's Ultimate Warrior. If Batista's role is that of an upper midcard wrestler, I can deal with that. However, if Batista becomes the face of SmackDown's babyface side, and is always going for the World title, I will not be a happy camper. I do not want SmackDown! to become "The Batista Show."

Dealing with Batista is one thing. However, if the WWE does what I fear they will be doing, then the great SmackDown! brand as we know it will be dead. If John Cena loses the WWE World title match at Breaking Point, he will be moved over to SmackDown! That worries me, because I already saw what happens when John Cena and Triple H are on separate brands. You get two shows with the same format. You get the "Triple H Show" and the "John Cena Show." Each show focuses on these two performers. At least with Batista, he may be involved in the main event scene. However, in the pecking order of things, the WWE never builds a brand around him. CM Punk, Chris Jericho, the Undertaker will still have a high profile role on SmackDown! with Batista in town. If John Cena comes on board, I fear that all will play second fiddle to the master of thuganomics.

That is not a good thing. SmackDown! needs to stay the way it is. Knowing that any number of performers on SmackDown! can be inserted into the World title picture, and they would appear worthy, is a refreshing change from the glass ceiling that crushes the heads of performers like MVP and Jack Swagger on RAW. If you bring over John Cena, along with the two-week-old acquisition of Batista, the glass ceiling will be brought over to the SmackDown! brand. Sure, the Undertaker, Chris Jericho, and probably CM Punk would be safe because they established themselves as top stars. However, I could easily see Dolph Ziggler immediately job to John Cena within Cena's first couple of weeks on the show. Thus, killing any momentum Ziggler built up for himself.

One of the biggest complaints regarding the WWE today is that they fail to create new stars. That is true of the RAW brand, but the SmackDown! brand does create new stars, and gives performers a chance to shine in the spotlight. In order to keep that light shining for the future stars of professional wrestling, the WWE needs to do the right thing. Keep John Cena on RAW, and let the fans continue on having the Friday night alternative to Monday night's RAW. Only then, both die-hard and casual fans will all win.

Keep Cena on Raw. Why ruin a good thing with how Smackdown is and bring in a talentless assclown like Cena, hell they already have Roidtista/Boretista, what ever, keep Cena away from the blue brand...far away. Smackdown is good for a reason, and that is one of them, the roster.

john cena wont come to sd bcoz mntv is no more a network and batista is already there so no chance i wish instead taker and batista are sen to raw to let the younger stars shine

there is no way wwe is putting cena on sd especially since sd is a dead brand as far as ratings goes on my net tv.

cena is staying on raw and orton can fued with a face, ted dibiase for a while.

as far as sd goes, wwe has enough star power to push the houseshows until my net folds for good and wwe moves sd to an ACTUAL NETWORK.

They are clearly sending Cena to ECW, guys.

You mean if he loses the match at Bragging Rights, not Breaking Point

WWE gave away the damn ending to Cena/Orton 23453244 by adding that Cena leaves RAW stipulation

cena is going to smackdown and will face either the undertaker or cm punk and mania and unlike what most people think cena puts people over in his loses look at hius match against the miz on raw, against ted dibiase on superstars cena will do whats best for the company because he knows he will be over regardless of whether he wins or loses

Raw is making plenty of stars....arguably more than Smackdown. Ted and Cody are getting time in the MAIN EVENT due to their association with Orton wrestling the likes of Triple H and HBK as well as Cena and Batista when he was there. Kofi is a star in the midcard on Raw and the Miz is ascending as well. Swagger (while not a fan) is getting is share of face time. Also Primo gets some love as well. MVP while being thrown into a tag team is getting a push albeit with Mark Henry who is fresh to Raw still. Masters and Bourne are in a program on the flagship show in pro wrestling where the most fans get to see them.

Smackdown has only really brought Morrison and Ziggler to the dance if you ask me. Cryme Tyme to an extent and the Hart Dynasty is getting time but they too are still a year away from getting serious time that results in meaningful programs.

I watch Raw because it's the flagship show in the business and when the product is being sold hard where do the precious "Smackdown Six" go to show off their goods.....Raw. There are no 3 hour Smackdown Specials, no Smackdown guests host, no LIVE TV which is a huge let down. If Smackdown was live if I could I would make a conceited effort to tune in but there's no incentive really.

Don't get me wrong the quality of performance on Smackdown is second to none but it's taped and it's on Friday night which makes it very difficult for me to watch due to having a job.

Once that little stipulation came in, I immediately sensed Cena going to SD. For me, it means one thing:

Taker is retiring. Cena will end the streak.

Batista was always going towards the world title in 2007. Smackdown was awesome in 2007. Disagreeing is revisionist history.

"The last time SmackDown! was a true alternative to RAW was when they had the original "SmackDown! Six," of Edge, Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Jr., and Chavo Guerrero."

I don't know if that was the last time Smackdown was a "true" alternative. I rather liked the King Booker era.

Regarding Cena, I think he will lose at Bragging Rights. He is scheduled to film a movie in December. Sadly, I think he is coming to Smackdown, to set up a main event for Mania w/ Taker, Batista, or Punk. But fear not, loyal Smackdown fans. I think they can maintain the type of booking we have all come to love, where, "any number of performers on SmackDown! can be inserted into the World title picture." In fact, this might be an experiment to see if it works w/ big names on the show. I really feel like next year's Wrestlemania is going to be a good for fans of the blue brand, the kind of fans that want to see new talent shine. WWE is in a crucial stage right now w/ aging stars like HHH and HBK, and cripled ones like Batista and Taker. The time is now to put over some new faces, much like they did at WM21. They almost have to... Don't be surprised if Punk goes over Cena and Dibiase bests Orton at Wrestlemania 26.

In '05, Batista was on top of Smackdown.

Batista and john cena are extremely cool wrestlers but what you people are saying has truth in it also. I love Batista and john cena but John cena should stay on raw he created the WWE spinner version of WWE title so Cena should indeed stay on raw.

If you think about it, RAW's midcard has far more depth to it than Smackdown's. Although RAW has the dominant 3 stars in HHH, Cena, and Orton controlling the main event with an iron fist, their midcard consists of Swagger, Kingston, Miz, Carlito, Primo, Chavo, MVP, Dibiase, Rhodes. all guys that are at least believeable as US champ material. on SD, Punk, Jericho, Taker, Batista are the Main guys, while JoMo, Ziggler, and Mysterio are the only upper midcard guys they have.

Posted By: Guest#1333 (Guest)  on October 07, 2009 at 10:36 PM

They could be bringing in Cena and Batista as short term fixes due to the sudden breakup for the New SD 6, with edge being injured for a long time, hardy taking a sabbatical in jail, Taker being barely mobile, and Jericho having to work all brands. Punk, Morrison, and Mysterio are the only ones left with working boots on

Cena wont be moved to SD. If Cena goes, then we will be seeing HHH Vs Boring Orton till 2019. in every PPVs

ok nobody worrie, if and onlt if john cena losses to orton at bragging rights, he will endup going to smackdon only until the nxt years draft. this could be a good thing just think about it, this would elevate stars like ted dibiase as the nxt top face on raw, jack swagger would become the second top heel on raw, and mvp would be up for a wwe championship match aqainst randy orton come the royal rumble or maybe sooner, plus with the expecting hbk heel turn that would set up hbk vs triple h at wm26, that would shaken up things alot for the raw brand until at least nxt years draft. so if cena moves which i think will happen expect some one from sd or ecw to jump to raw most likely a face which i think will be christian, this will be your top heels and faces for raw.

faces:
triple h
mvp
ted dibiase
christian
kofi kingston
mark henry
evan bourne

heels:
randy orton
jack swagger
hbk(heel turn coming)
big show
the miz
carlito/chris masters

now the face side dont look as strong as the heel side but whith proper booking by wwe creative this can get interesting and be very unpredictable it will make the iwc be on the edge of their seats wondering whats gonna happen nxt. could u imagine by december a wwe title match between randy orton(C) vs mvp, and triple h feuding wit jack swagger, they would have alot of room of creativity to work wit, new rivals new matches and new mainevents that will most likely happen.

Cena on Smackdown may be tolerable if, and it's a big if, he is used right.

He can elevate Punk, Ziggler, Morrison et al. He can also have his return match with Big Dave - it would be a real coup for Smackdown to score that match.

However, if he moved he couldn't just do the same old crap. What I'd do is have an angle where losing to Orton shattered his confidence, made him make silly mistakes, keep second guessing himself. Then have a master manipulator - maybe a straight edge one- pray on and exploit those feelings in a long term angle, culminating in a match at Wrestlemania where...and this is the important part...Cena is the underdog. Then Cena seems like someone who had to dig down deep to get his moment of glory, instead of show up, fart, eat a bagel and then get the spotlight.

Complete and utter nonsense, fantasy booking there, but tell me it wouldn't be more interesting then Cena steamrolling over every single wrestler he faces.

Batista's never been the face of a brand? Did you sleep through 2007?

Posted By: joe blow (Guest)  on October 08, 2009 at 08:09 AM

I can see cena moving to SD becos that would create a whole lot of new feuds like taker and punk. But then it begs the question - who faces orton? ted? HHH again? HBK agsin? Mvp? or god forbid, kofi? thus cena prob won't be going anywhere

Posted By: Heel (Guest)  on October 08, 2009 at 09:13 AM

Cena's filming another movie in December, so I don't expect to see him on any brand after the ppv. Not until the filming's over anyway.

Posted By: nomark (Guest)  on October 08, 2009 at 01:46 PM

I think Cena going to SD would be a good move. Remember the last time Cena was on SD, he wrestled the Big Show in a surprisingly good match. Being back in a pure wrestling environment could be the thing that turns Cena back into the talented wrestler he used to be, rather than the Super Cena that the Raw booking team are obsessed with.

Posted By: Weng (Registered)  on October 11, 2009 at 06:32 AM

Raw sucks. DX is tired and lame, Cena's a homo, and Cody and Ted can't cut a promo to save their lives. If it wern't for Jericho, it wouldn't be worth anything. Batista is worse than Warrior, at least Warrior was entertaining. They need to kick these losers to the curb, go back to doing one show very well, and stop insulting those of us who have been loyal to the product for so long, we deserve better than the shit they put on. I hope Stephanie McMahon gets a histerectomy

Posted By: awsome69 (Guest)  on October 11, 2009 at 02:56 PM

cena will stay...anyway he still can't wrestle...go jerishow go that'S the motto. On the other hand, the biggest joke in the world would be batista getting the title again and get injured again. wwe will never learn that 9 year old fans don't pay for any of this crap

Posted By: dalpé (Guest)  on October 14, 2009 at 11:27 AM

Maybe Cena could be home sick.................well SD is where it all began for Cena. I would love to see Cena turn heel. His old gimmick was the best that's how he made himself. Oh Well, he must have run out of raps. Bring Kurt Angle back for a reunion fued! LOl
