411’s Wrestler of the Week 10.12.09: Week 28
Posted by Michael Bauer on 10.12.2009

Welcome to Week 28, Year FIVE, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…

Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…

1st - 5
2nd - 4
3rd - 3
4th - 2
5th - 1

If you are wondering how some of the writers decide who to vote for, please check out our Wrestler of the Week Supplemental Column!

Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…

1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1

...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year at WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…

The Voting~!
ARI
1)Rey Mysterio & Chris Jericho (tie)
I can't complain about seeing these two go at it again in 2009, because every match they have is a bit of golden delicious. Mysterio didn't lose a beat despite the one month suspension. Jericho picks up plenty of points for another excellent performance on the stick, going word for word against Big Ben and then DX on Raw. Triple Word Score Bonus for "useless mesomorphs".

2) Tyler Black: A clean sweep of wins this weekend in Ring of Honor. Black was returning from a month layoff due to injury and defeating Chris Hero, Kenny King and then winning the whole Survival of the Fittest tournament certainly does that.
3) Kenny Omega: The Omega Rising in ROH continues with a huge win against Davey Richards at Friday's ROH show. The match was hailed as best of the evening and an elevation match for Omega. Richards, well he's just been that damned awesome all year.
4) The Miz
5) Roderick Strong

Jeremy Thomas
1) The Amazing Red & The Miz (tie)
The Amazing Red more or less came out of nowhere to win the X-Division title for the second time in his career. Sure, he won a match to get the #1 Contendership, but I didn't actually expect him to beat Joe for the belt. Meanwhile, the Miz won the US Title for his first singles title in the 'E. Big weeks for both men in an otherwise quiet-ish week.

2) Tyler Black: Black comes back from injury strong, showing that he's still a top player in Ring of Honor.
3) Rey Mysterio: Rey Rey comes back from taking the pin at Hell in a Cell by putting on a damn good match with old rival Chris Jericho. The match wasn't the cleanest they've had or the best, but it was still quite good and is Rey's first win back from suspension. Getting in the Fatal Four-Way doesn't hurt either.
4) Kenny Omega
5) D-Generation X

Aaron Hubbard
1) Tyler Black
Tyler Black returned from an injury this week with a big win over Chris Hero on Friday. He topped that on Saturday by beating Kenny King to get into the Survival of the Fittest Finale, and then won the whole shebang, eliminating Hero and Strong last, and got an ROH Title Shot in the process.

2) The Miz: Won the United States Title by beating Kofi Kingston on RAW in his biggest match to date.
3) Rey Mysterio: Returned from his suspension and beat Chris Jericho in a terrific match on Smackdown!
4) Triple H & Shawn Michaels
5) The Amazing Red/Kenny Omega

Jasper Gerretsen
1) Tyler Black
Tyler Black returns from injury in a big way, winning the Survival of the Fittest tournament by outlasting five other men in the finals, including the three previous winners that are still with the company today. It took four superkicks to put away Roderick Strong, but in the end he did pull out the big win.

2) The Miz: I'll admit that I really didn't expect him to win the United States championship on RAW, especially after the stipulation was announced, but he finally managed to keep Kingston down long enough for the three count and the title.
3) Amazing Red: Sure, he needed Lashley's help to do it, but he still defeated Samoa Joe to win the title. I have high hopes for this championship win, and I genuinely think that they'll finally move the X-Division title away from the MEM/Frontline feud by putting it on one of the X-Division originals.
4) Roderick Strong
5) Rey Mysterio/CM Punk

Shawn S. Lealos
1) The Miz
It's about damn time. I really thought when they split up MnM v2 that Morrison would go on and be a star while Miz would become a jobber to the stars, lost in midcard-ville. Well, imagine my surprise when Morrison did exactly what I thought he would do but Miz surpassed all my expectations. The Miz can shine on the mic and is getting really good in the ring so this is a great move for his career.

2) The Amazing Red: I don't like the fact that Red did not get an intro for this match but at the same time it made his win even more surprising. He pinned Joe and, while I hated the fact that Lashley did all the damage, I hope this is the start of a good push for Red as champion.
3) Tyler Black: The guy is getting yet another push in ROH. Let's see if they actually follow through this time.
4) Matt Morgan
5) D'Angelo Dinero

Andy Clark
1) Tyler Black
While I'm sure there was some eye rolling made about Black's victory, he did win the Survival of the Fittest tournament over a pretty impressive field and he has what I would imagine is his last title opportunity for the ROH Title.

2) The Miz: The Miz rebounds from the burial to Cena with his first singles title. I don't have high hopes for his spot on Raw but at least he has his spot in history carved out with a United States Title reign.
3) Amazing Red: Last week Red was just a jobber. This week he is X-Division Champion heading into the biggest show on TNA's calendar.
4) DX
5) Jack Swagger

Samuel Berman
1) Tyler Black
Won Ring of Honor's Survival of the Fittest Tournament.

2) Amazing Red: Won the X-Division Title.
3) The Miz: Bested Kofi Kingston for the U.S. Title.
4) Kenny Omega
5) Roderick Strong and Rey Mysterio (tie)

Ryan Byers

1) Mike the Miz - Being a secondary champion in WWE doesn't mean as much as it once did. After all, just take a look at Kofi Kingston. He's finished up one of the longest US Title reigns in recent memory, and he seems like no bigger of a star for it. However, the POTENTIAL for a good run with the US strap to turn a midcard guy in to something more than a midcard guy is still there. As a result, I have to give Mike the Miz some credit for snagging the title from everybody's favorite Ghanaian wrestler.

2) Shinsuke Nakamura - Nakamura won the IWPG Heavyweight Title this week and made his first successful defense of the title this week, beating a very game Shinjiro Ohtani, who has been quite impressive in his recent NJPW guest shots.
3) Tyler Black - Black strikes me as a guy who has had too many failed title shots to be a legitimate contender for the ROH Title, but we'll see if his Survival of the Fittest win rebuilds him any.
4) D-Generation X
5) King RIKI

Larry Csonka
1) Tyler Black
Tyler Black won the ROH Survival of the fittest event this past weekend, which is a big accomplishment. Let's hope that this time is the time for Black, as many feel that the company has dropped the ball on him.

2) The Miz: The Miz finally defeated Kofi Kingston for the US Title. Miz has been improving, he finally has real gear, and he now has a title. He means serious business.
3) Matt Morgan: Matt Morgan got a clean win over Mick Foley in the tag match last week, as he heads to his battle with Kurt Angle.
4) The Amazing Red
5) DX

Michael Bauer
1)Tyler Black
Yes, I know, Tyler's push has been killed by Ring of Honor so many times. But regardless, Tyler Black joins Davey Richards as those with a guaranteed Ring of Honor World Title match. He won the Survival of the Fittest Tournament this weekend and went undefeated against some of the best RoH has.

2) Kenny Omega: Yes, the below title wins are big, but Kenny Omega defeating Davey Richards was bigger for his career.
3) The Miz/Amazing Red (tie): Winning the US Title and X-Divison respectfully, both of them shocking as well.
4) Chris Jericho
5) Yoshi Tatsu

    Year-End Standings~!

Shawn Michaels gains a point and right behind him is The Miz, thanks to his second place finish. The Amazing Red and Kenny Omega debut on the list and immediately have more points than Triple H, who doubled his point total this week. Kenny Omega! Put on far and away the best match I saw this week, and elevated his career more than any other person on this list.

I thought he was just a (admittedly funny) goof with athletic potential, but he certainly opened my eyes.

Amazing Red. Gets a jobber entrance and still wins the X-Division title.

I'm disappointed that Miz lost out to some uncharismatic nobody flavor of the month guy from an overrated promotion.

I think Amazing Red's title win is a perfect example of why TNA frustrates me from time to time. Their booking seems so spotty. Red had flat out disappeared from TV for at least a month. Then he shows up, wins a title shot and then wins the title within 2 weeks. I like the guy and I'm glad he has the title but they really didn't built it up. Title wins should come at the end of some slowly built up momentum over a big span of time like Miz's.

Elevated his career? To what? Where was it elevated to? He put on a match that a few dozen people will remember and say "yea, Keith, Kevin, Karl, was it... Kenny Omega. Yea, he had a great match a few years ago."

Miz elevated his career. He won his first major singles title in WWE and is now a prominent midcarder on the largest weekly wrestling show in the world. THAT is an elevated career.

No complaints on the list this week.

As far as the non-Smackdown wrestlers who have a chance to crack the top 5...

Orton will likely get a top 2-3 from the next PPV if he wins. He also could randomly get points being the top heel on Raw.

AJ Styles has a shot - assuming he retains against Sting and puts on a good match, that should shoot him up to the top 10. Then, if he could get into a solid fued with Joe and Angle - and retains the belt - he could make a charge as matches with those opponents should be the best of most weeks.

I would also suggest Nobody Noname McNeverwhere for having a really really great match for the Unknown Backyard Championship in the Trailer Park backyard. True, he lost, but his career sure got ELEVATED! FTW!

"Elevated his career? To what? Where was it elevated to?"

He went from a comedy undercard act to to a legitimate threat to beat anyone in the company (regardless of its size, its influence is undeniable; just ask WWE). That was plainly obvious by my comment and those of the writers who voted for him, but some people are just willfully obtuse.

"Miz elevated his career. He won his first major singles title in WWE and is now a prominent midcarder on the largest weekly wrestling show in the world."

I agree that he's a prominent midcarder on the largest wrestling show in the world, but how is that any different than a week ago? Because he pinned someone BELOW him on the roster (how many PPV matches does Kofi have against Cena?) for a joke of a devalued title? I don't see the elevation there.

Now, if he has a strong and lengthy title reign that increases the statute of the US title, then we'll talk. But for now, I don't see Miz as any stronger than he was last week.

I gotta say that Tyler Black and Kenny Omega deserved some honors this week. I saw Kenny wrestle Davey Richards to a nearly 30 minute match on Friday and I gotta say that it was THE BEST MATCH I've ever seen and that includes WWE and TNA. ROH has mainstream exposure thanks to HDNet...

Anyone who hates ROH is a virgin, plain and simple. PROVE ME WRONG!

I really want to see that Omega/Richards match now. It's always cool when a new star breaks out in ROH.

I was disappointed with the predictability of Black's win, but I also have to admit that it was the right call. At this time last year, Black was the guy that people were getting behind to take the title. Unfortunately, his momentum has stalled and fans have turned their attention to Richards as the new ROH MVP. The SotF win might be exactly what is needed to get the wheels of his push turning again.

I just hope they don't give Black the title sans the necessary crowd support with plans of turning him into a heel champion. That strategy worked out with Nigel's circumstances, but it would be too repetitive if they did it again with Tyler. That's why they had to just get the title off Lynn as soon as possible or they would have wound up in the exact same spot. They either need a face who the fans will actually cheer or they should just keep the title on Aries.

Add me to the list that was BLOWN AWAY by the awesome match that Kenny Omega and Davey Richards put on Friday night. I figured it would be a good match, I just didn't realize how good. I'm glad to see him get some recognition from coming out of relatively nowhere to make himself a star in the ROH.

Posted By: Josh (Guest)  on October 13, 2009 at 12:27 AM

    Tom Talker

The Mizs build up over a big span of time was what 3-4 weeks. ROH has built up Black for months towards the TOP TITLE not the joint 4th most significant singles title in the company. The Miz had a small amount of promo time and a match which are not on the same level as the matches which Black competed in.

So no its not an insult you just are a wwe mark.

"2) The Miz: Won the United States Title by beating Kofi Kingston on RAW in his biggest match to date."

No offense, but are you high? Surely Miz's biggest match to date would be his PPV match against Cena? Considering Cena's a main eventer and the match was advertised as such. This is why you fail.

The Miz is one of the most overrated IWC smark darlings around. He's shit. Who doesn't feel the urge to punch him in the face?

Same goes for Matt Morgan in TNA. A WWE reject who's not good enough to be a main eventer.

Posted By: Comment Board Poster (Guest)

Because Not only is he a relatively Talented Wrestler who can put on a good match and seldom botches anything or gets seriously injuried, but because He's playing a great character. Everybody already hates Reality TV Stars, and he's running with that ball amazingly well, He gets good heel heat, makes people want to see him lose, and still manages to be pretty funny sometimes.

He's not the best wrestler alive, or the best talker in the buisness, but he does his job very well. I've never gotten bored of him (annoyed but not bored), and that is the best thing a heel wrestler can do, Keep you tuning in to see him get beat and churn our a decent match.

The Miz actually deserves an award for actually convincing some members of the IWC that he is anything other than an unpainted Boogeyman without worms.
