411Mania's Squared Circle News Report 10.17.09
Posted by Dustin James on 10.17.2009

Welcome back inside the Squared Circle! How is everyone doing this week? I'm fantastic seeing as it was actually a pretty good news week this week in the wonderful world of professional wrestling. While we had the unfortunate passing of one of the greatest wrestling managers of all-time, Shane McMahon's sudden departure from the WWE just stole all the attention. Leave it up to those DAMN McMahons to one-up everyone. Either way, I'll get to those stories later.

I don't know about the rest of you, but we have been getting a piss load of rain here in Oregon. The rain usually means I'm stuck inside my house and therefore I have been forced by Mother Nature to play endless hours of Madden 2010. Since I'm a Kansas City Chiefs fan and they suck horse wang this year, I decided to try and lead the Cincinnati Bengals to championship glory! Needless to say, I went 11-5 my first year but STILL won the Super Bowl! I defeated the Eagles (those poor bastards just can't the win big one!) in a close game. I then went on to have a pretty good off season and now I'm trying to defend my championship. As of this writing I'm 6-0 and things are looking good (especially Carson Palmer who has 13 TD's and only 1 INT so far)!

And that's my yearly mention of Madden......

Anyways.......

LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!

Biggest News Of The Week:

"Captain" Lou Albano Passes Away......

At least we know he lived a full life....

The wrestling world lost a true legend this week. If you grew up a fan of wrestling in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's.....you knew who "Captain" Lou Albano was. Hell, you didn't even have to be a wrestling fan to know who "Captain" Lou was. The man was not only one of the best managers of all-time, but he managed to cross over into the main stream with appearances in music videos and in the "Super Mario Supershow" where he portrayed the mucho popular "Mario"! Albano was one of the greatest heels of all-time. Back in the day, people would literally buy wrestling tickets and attend shows just to see Albano's guys potentially lose. That's how crazy people's hatred for him was.

It didn't matter if you liked him or hated him, one simple fact is Albano was one of the keys to the success of the first WrestleMania. He helped push that show hard and in the end....well, let's just say it sort of paid off for the WWE. However, that's not even the biggest accolade on Albano's resume. The man managed 15 different tag teams to championship gold, as well as a few singles wrestlers! There must have been something the man was doing right seeing as the men he was guiding were always holding championship gold.

While Albano's death may be sudden, the man did get to live a good long life and that's pretty rare to see in the world of professional wrestling. We will all miss the WWE Hall-Of-Famer as he really was one of the best managers of all-time. Hell, in this very column just two weeks ago I named Albano as the third greatest wrestling manager of all-time. The man with the rubber band will surely be missed.......

RIP "Captain" Lou Albano...........

Shane McMahon Quits WWE!

So I guess we know who will be in charge of the WWE when Vince retires/dies......

In absolutely SHOCKING news Friday, Shane McMahon (son of Vince McMahon and leader of Mean Street Posse) abruptly quit the WWE! Say WHA??? As of this writing, there's not much to report about the story as both sides are being mum on the situation, but there are a lot of rumors going around right now. People are whispering that Shane quit because he finally came to the realization that the company is going to be Stephanie and HHH's in a few years and he would only have a limited role with the company. People also mention that it could be a work and Shane could possibly be looking into buying TNA so the WWE can recreate the classic "Invasion" angle.

Either way, what I do know is that as of 2010, Shane McMahon will no longer be considered a WWE employee. Those are words that I honestly never thought I would write. I don't know what's going on his head at the moment or what exactly lead up to his decision to leave the company, but I'm sure I'll know by next week's column. But in the meantime, here's what Shane posted on WWE.com for all the fans to read regarding his resignation.....

It is with great sadness that I announce my resignation from the WWE, effective January 1, 2010.

I have never even considered a future outside the walls of the WWE. However, sometimes life takes an unexpected turn and while it is the most difficult decision I have ever made, it is time for me to move on.

First and foremost, I would like to thank my father for the incredible education working with him has provided and for giving me the opportunity to play a role in building WWE into the global phenomenon that it is today. I am extremely proud to have been the 4th generation in this business, and I am grateful for everyday I was able to work along side not only my own, but the entire WWE family.

Thank you to all of the WWE Superstars both past and present for your passion, pride and dedication. You are truly the engine of the organization and it has been a pleasure to work with, learn from and get to know all of you. Thank you for the privilege of sharing the stage with you and for allowing me to become but a momentary member of your elite brotherhood. I have so much appreciation for the many sacrifices you endure, both physically and personally, to make this business the success that it is. The respect I have for each of you is immeasurable.

Finally, there are no words to express my gratitude to WWE fans the world over for supporting this company through good times and bad and for your unbridled passion that fuels the Superstars' performances. I am profoundly grateful to have been able to entertain you both in front of the camera and from behind the scenes. You are the greatest fans in the world.

I will always love this business and will remain a fan forever.

Shane

See what I mean? You can decipher that message in so many ways. By next week, let's hope we find out what lead to his resignation. As of now, let's just blame it on HHH, because that's the COOL thing to do.....isn't it?

Remember This Guy???

The Shark

I first started watching the WWE right when the whole Hulk Hogan/Earthquake feud kicked off in 1990. I was fascinated with this Earthquake fellow because he was the one who came out and CRUSHED Hogan's ribs by sitting on him! So...needless to say, I always viewed Earthquake as a pretty big star. I mean, this was the guy who took out "THE IMMORTAL" Hulk Hogan! He's suppose to be a star right?

Well, guess what happens when Earthquake's contract with the WWE ends and he decides to jump ship over to WCW? They decide to put face paint on his cheeks to resemble shark teeth and a giant shark on his wrestling attire and name him "THE SHARK" (I know he was "Avalanche" first, but we will ignore that seeing as it didn't last long)! Now THAT'S going to get over! There's nothing wrestling fans like cheering more than someone who apparently came from the sea to once again take out Hulk Hogan. The only thing was...this time that feud sucked.

That was the thing about WCW. If you were an ex-WWE star who wasn't allowed to use the same name they used in the WWE due to legal reasons....WCW really gave you a shitty gimmick. Earthquake ended up as "The Shark", Brutus Beefcake ended up as "Zodiac" and a whole shit load of other names, and Goldust ended up as "Se7en". I thought they were suppose to be a "creative" team? Ohhhh, that's right. They are no longer in business. For some reason, I just can't figure out why.......

It's the debut of.......THE SHARK!!!!

Random News Bits:

- Torrie Wilson apparently had a close call with death when she was in Los Angeles attending Stacy Keibler's birthday party. Wilson posted the following on her Twitter account regarding the situation:

"Big scare for me tonight! I was in the emergency room. Thought I was headed up to heaven for a minute there. Thanks for letting me stay a bit longer, Jesus. Bad reaction to some meds and I just got really sick all of a sudden. I'm feeling much better now, but it was a big scare. Gonna get some rest tonight for sure."

Now, seeing as she's a former wrestler a lot of people will jump to conclusions. However, I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and say that it was all this man's fault.....

- Big Van Vader's son, Jesse White, is going to be training with Harley Race soon in hopes of landing a WWE developmental deal. White is a former football player for the Oklahoma Sooners who had to end his football career due to hip problems. Apparently these hip problems don't bug him all that much seeing as he plans on starting a wrestling career. Does he realize that wrestling can be even more physical than football? Just sayin.....

- Speaking of wrestling legends who's kids may be looking to get into the wrestling business. Apparently everyone's favorite little convict, Nick Hogan, is training at Rikishi's wrestling school. Yes, because when you are too lame to get your own reality show, you must have wrestling to fall back on. I feel kind of bad for the kid honestly. He's a giant douchebag who will never be as famous as his big breasted sister. Oh, what's that? You don't know who I'm talking about? Well, let me fill you in......

Yes, that was just a lame excuse to post a picture of her in a bikini......

- Booker T will reportedly be leaving TNA after Bound for Glory and could be returning to the WWE soon. The WWE is said to be interested in having Booker return and Booker is so unhappy with TNA at the moment, he's all but ready to sign a WWE contract. I love when guys leave the WWE and go to TNA and then realize how good they had it in the WWE. While you may have to put up with Vince McMahon's shit, the money situation is way better over in the WWE as far as bonuses go. If Booker does return to the WWE, let's hope he's still "King" Booker. That was the most interesting Booker had been in years.....

- And in related news, Scott Steiner and Kevin Nash may be on their way out of TNA as well. I must say, this would be a good thing for TNA. While Steiner and Nash may have "names" and could be responsible for putting a few asses in the seats. The company needs to start thinking more long term and focus on guys who can give them 10-15 years of solid work and not 10-15 more months of stealing TV time that could go somewhere more useful.

- Jim Cornette recently had the following to say regarding his stint in TNA:

"At TNA, I was basically tired of working for a big company and watch it get smaller. I wanted to go to a smaller company and watch it get bigger. It was sad, disappointing and depressing to watch. We didn't have as many PPV buys as we should and nobody was getting over. (Russo) is the only booker I've ever seen who gets people under."

It's no secret that Cornette has never been a fan of Russo's and I just love whenever he burns the guy. The fact that Jim Cornette is unemployed and Vince Russo is the head booker of the second biggest wrestling federation in America is almost as crazy as the fact that Jon Gruden isn't coaching in the NFL, yet a bum like Tom Cable is.......

- For anyone who hasn't heard the full details of the "HUGE" diva trade that was announced on RAW this past Monday, here ya go:

To RAW: Melina, Bella Twins, Eve Torres

To Smackdown: Beth Phoenix, Mickie James

To ECW: Rosa Mendes

All I can say is....THANK YOU Vince for taking Rosa Mendes off of RAW. While she's fun to look at, her wrestling skills are some of the worst I have ever seen, and I suffered through the early Jackie Gayda years!

- The WWE is apparently trying to get a member of the New York Yankees to come in and host RAW on November 16 at Madison Square Garden. Let's hope they can score someone like A-Rod or Jeter. I'd love to see one of those douchebags get kicked in the head by Randy Orton. GO ANGELS~!

- While the name of the February PPV has changed to "Elimination Chamber", the WWE is now doing another poll and letting the fans vote for the new name of the May PPV. Here are the choices you can vote on......

*Riot Control

*War Games

*Multimania

While we all know "War Games" will end up winning, we shouldn't get too excited. Vince has said in the past that he will NEVER book a WCW-style War Games match on a PPV and he recently confirmed that action by turning the idea down again this week. Vince needs to lighten up on his whole "I won't use anything I didn't create" thing and just do the two-ring steel cage match! Sometimes you need to think of what the fans want to see Vince....and the fans want to see "WAR GAMES"!

- An "Amber Alert" has been issued for the following guy......

In all seriousness, Carlito is really missing. If you have seen him, contact his family immediately.

- Ozzy Osbourne is set to host RAW on November 2. Make sure you have the closed caption setting on your TV turned on so you can understand what he's saying. Will we get some Ozzy in-ring action in Worcester? God, I sure hope not.......

Wrestling Top 10 Lists:

Top 10 Best Matches in WCW Halloween Havoc History

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. It's the only holiday you can dress up in a wacky costume, get drunk, and NOT get arrested! So, for the next few weeks I'll be doing WCW Halloween Havoc top 10 related lists. This week, I'll be ranking the BEST matches in Halloween Havoc history! Enjoy........

This list is in a particular order......

Honorable Mentions:

- Steve Austin vs. Dustin Rhodes - Halloween Havoc 1991

- Ricky Steamboat vs. Brian Pillman - Halloween Havoc 1992

- Yuji Nagata vs. Ultimo Dragon - Halloween Havoc 1997

- Gedo vs. Chris Jericho - Halloween Havoc 1997

AND NOW......THE TOP 10!........

10) Ricky Steamboat vs. Paul Orndorff

WCW Halloween Havoc 1993

It's no surprise that a match involving Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and Paul "Mr. Wonderful" Orndorff would be on a top 10 list. As a matter of fact, you can throw Steamboat in with anyone and that will at least guarantee yourself a good time. The reason this match gets ranked here is because it was originally suppose to be Steamboat vs. Yoshi Kwan, but since Kwan got injured...we got Orndorff as a replacement and it made for a better match anyway. If you throw out all the wacky stuff at the end of the match, it may have been ranked higher than it actually is.

I couldn't find this actual match, but I did find a tag team match with Shockmaster & Orndorff vs. Steamboat & William Regal.........

9) Ricky Morton/Tommy Rich vs. Midnight Express

WCW Halloween Havoc 1990

The Midnight Express and the Rock N' Roll Express were once involved in a heated tag team feud that lasted for YEARS and spilled over into different wrestling territories as well. Needless to say, it was the definition of a blood feud. The two teams were set to square off again at WCW Halloween Havoc 1990, but the Midnight Express had a plan up their sleeves! You see, they decided to target Robert Gibson's knee and put him out of action for awhile which left Ricky Morton without a partner. But have no worries! Tommy Rich is once again here to save the day! This match is ranked here because it's basically the last time we saw the Midnight Express and that means this match alone has historical significance.......

And the Midnight Express sail out into the sunset........

8) Rey Mysterio vs. Dean Malenko

WCW Halloween Havoc 1996

Like it's a real shocker that a match involving Rey Mysterio and Dean Malenko would be featured in a "top 10 best matches" list. While Hulk Hogan may have been the worst thing that ever happened to Halloween Havoc....Rey Mysterio is easily one of the best things that ever happened to the show, and you will see why later on!

I couldn't find the Halloween Havoc match between the two, but here's a pretty good Nitro encounter.....

7) Diamond Dallas Page vs. Randy Savage

WCW Halloween Havoc 1997

Whoever thought a "Las Vegas Death Match" could be this good? While this match may not be the most technical encounter on this list, it made for one hell of a damn good brawl! Not to mention DDP and Savage had a pretty good chemistry together which is why I enjoyed the hell out of their feuds. The only thing stopping this match from being ranked higher is the fact that the ending involved the "fake" Sting.......

One of the greatest moments during the DDP/Savage feud........

6) Lex Luger vs. Brian Pillman

WCW Halloween Havoc 1989

While the first Halloween Havoc should is best known for being a horrible PPV, this was the brightest spot on an otherwise dark card. Back in 1989, Brian Pillman was the talk of the town in WCW and one of the guys everyone predicted was going to be huge. It also happened that Luger himself was a pretty good worker in 1989. When you add up all of them ingredients, you have yourself a pretty damn good US title match. Watching the underdog Pillman come close to upsetting Luger for the title was a thing of beauty. Man, I miss Brian Pillman......

I still find myself cheering for Pillman when I watch this match......

5) Bobby Eaton vs. Terry Taylor

WCW Halloween Havoc 1991

I have mentioned numerous times that Bobby Eaton and Terry Taylor are two of my all-time favorite wrestlers. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that I would rank their Halloween Havoc 1991 match on this list. One of the reasons this match belongs on this list is due to the fact that nobody was expecting much from it, however it ended up being the best match on the card.....go figure......

I couldn't find this match, but I did find Bobby Eaton vs. Rey Mysterio!!......

4) Ric Flair/Sting vs. Arn Anderson/Brian Pillman

WCW Halloween Havoc 1995

Ahhh, who doesn't remember the old Arn Anderson/Ric Flair feud? Talk about a disappointing feud. Anderson and Flair had a history of being team mates for YEARS in WCW. So, you would think that when the company decides to split them up and have them feud, that the feud would be something memorable making (in a good way). However, that's not what ended up happening (remember....this is WCW), but there were some good things to come out of that feud. This match is one them. Just by looking at the guys involved, you knew you were in for an instant classic and that's exactly what we got. It's still a damn shame that Anderson never became a world champion. Talk about a wasted talent.....

I couldn't find the match itself, but I did manage to find Arn Anderson BITCH SLAPPING Brian Pillman, w00t!.....

3) Barry Windham/Dustin Rhodes vs. Steve Austin/Steve Williams

WCW Halloween Havoc 1992

You know, going back and re-watching this match makes me sad that Steve Austin and Steve Williams weren't a full-time tag team. This time limit classic for the NWA and WCW world tag team titles may not have been as good had Austin not substituted for Terry Gordy who decided to no-show the PPV. Either way, this is tag team wrestling like tag team wrestling should be. Good show~!

And here it is...........

2) Big Van Vader vs. Cactus Jack

WCW Halloween Havoc 1993

Whoever would have thought that the "Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal" match would actually turn out to be a classic. When Cactus Jack and Vader spun the wheel and ended up on a "Texas Death Match", I believe we all knew we were in for something good. Needless to say the two men didn't disappoint and gave us one of the true Halloween Havoc classics......

Why is it always a "Texas Death Match"? Why can't it be something like a "Vermont Death Match"......

1) Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio

WCW Halloween Havoc 1997

Do I really have to explain this match? Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero competed in one of the greatest wrestling matches of all-time and it was our pleasure to view it. If you have never seen this match, do yourself a favor and watch it immediately. You will thank me for it.....

Here it is, one of the greatest wrestling matches of all-time.......

I think what would of earned an honorable mention, Goldberg vs DDP for the World Heavyweight title.

I really think the most likely explanation for Shane's departure from WWE is that he's going to work full-time on his mother's campaign.

The whole buying TNA or hating Triple H & Stephanie sounds like more armchair-booking by the IWC.

Does anybody really think Shane is gonna turn his back on the cash cow that is WWE?

I'll bet a million bucks that Shane is back with WWE the day after Linda gets pounced in the Republican primary. Any takers?

........of course the payout- if I'm wrong- will be paid in Monopoly money.

A Yankee hosting RAW? No chance of A-Rod or Jeter. No chance of them losing, either! Sorry. If you expect a Yankee to get that spot, no doubt it will be either Nick Swisher, or Johnny Damon, the two men responsible for bringing the replica WWE title belt that gets passed around to the "player of the game" when they win. A-Rod will barely talk to the media anymore and Jeter would never put himself in a position to be blasted by the media. Swisher, Damon? They don't really care.

James, you dont always get our thanks for writing such great coloumn, but i will take this oppurtunity to say that u are a great writer, and i respect you so much for bringing 5 minutes of joy in my life for being a wrestling fan. And rey vs eddie proves just that.

A couple of other matches I would have considered, at least for honorable mention:

1989: Sting & Flair v. Funk & Muta--Thunderdome
1998: Jericho v. Raven
1998: Goldberg v. DDP

Eddie v Rey at Hallowe'en Havoc '97 = BEST. MATCH. EVER. I can watch it over and over again and everything is perfect. Every move is oh so crisp and Eddie looks like he's gonna break Rey in half and rip his face off. It's wrestling as art.

What is this shit about Carlito missing?

Posted By: Devin (Guest)  on October 17, 2009 at 09:34 AM

Shane didn't quit anything. WWE is part of his family and anytime he wants to work again, he just starts working. Taking time off would be the better phrase.

Am I the only person that doesn't think Brooke Hogan is hot in the least? So she has a decent body, who cares. There are millions of girls out there with bodies just as good if not better than hers. What bothers me about Brooke is her face. I can't be the only one that thinks she looks exactly like her father. Give her a huge bald spot, and the mustache, and she would be the second coming of the Hulkster, no doubt about it. And she already looks like she's at least 30, when she's only about 21. She's aging rapidly, worse than even Torrie Wilson has. I'd call her a has been, but that would imply that she was ever actually anything to begin with.

can this be a work?? seeing as they are a limited company on the stock market. would this not affect their value?? so i doubt its a work. hes just disillusioned with the product and want to work somewhere fresh. not tna.

Great Column.

Rey v Eddie HH97' still truly one of the best matches I've ever seen.

I don't know why Shane would have expected the running of WWE to go to anybody except Stephanie and HHH. He worked on the media side and seems to have kept his nose out of the wrestling part of the business. So it can't be that he woke up and suddenly realized where the business was going.
Then again, he also has many shares. So it isn't like he could be cut out of the action, as it were.

You forgot Doom vs. The HorsemenL Criminally underated match!!!

All the WWE marks are making up that rumor of "Shane is going to buy TNA" Hey WWE fans N-E-V-E-R G-O-I-N-G T-O H-A-P-P-E-N!

A cheap shot at the WCW creative team? While 'The Shark' is far from the best gimmick every, it certainly doesn't rank with Max Moon, Mantaur, and Man Mountain Rock. Plus, dont act like Brutus Beefcake was worth watching, cause even with a descent gimmick(which I'll say the barber one was) people only wanted to watch him because he was Hogan's buddy.

Your Halloween Havoc list left out an awesome match, and even though you say HH 89 sucked(I dont know, havent seen it) The Thundercage match at the end was awesome. Of course, it had Flair/Sting vs Funk/Muta so how could it not be? It might have been slightly overbooked, but not as bad as it could have been.

Guess Vince forgot he used NWO(created by WCW), but won't use a WCW-style War Games match. Yeah, that makes perfect sense Vince...
