Match A Day 10.22.09: Week 27 - ROH Stylin' & Profilin'
Posted by Jake Chambers on 10.22.2009
Retirement doesn’t stop Ric Flair from making this DVD one of the most memorable Ring of Honor events in history!
Previously on Match A Day:
-Jake Chambers swore off watching Pro-Wrestling in regular continuity following the continual letdown of television and pay-per-view, finally culminating at the super lame Wrestlemania 25.
-taking a break from reading websites, backstage gossip, and taping and live results, Jake decided to only watch ONE match a day of old matches and international wrestling, while following the American continuity on delay, buying DVDs and borrowing tapes a few months in advance, inspired by the way in which he usually followed Ring of Honor.
-then "Jake" (not his real name) had a breakdown and now he's not as much of as smart ass as he used to be! Me, I'm his girlfriend Katie (you'll know it's me talking when you see this beautiful red font) and I have to take care of him 24/7 now, and just to keep him happy I let him watch one match a day and write out his rambling, moronic thoughts, which I then copy edit into something decent… You're welcome :P
I recently left the Seoul, Korea bedside of Jake for a few weeks to visit some friends in Sydney, Australia. Don't worry, Jake is fully capable of banging out his part of the column, and I can still do my part to edit it up online. If ur worried about Jake and his health, don't, because scary old woman who doesn't speak any English will be coming by to look after him while I'm gone
And now MAD Week 27 begins...
[All Matches are from ROH Stylin' and Profilin', March 2009]
Match #178 – Sunday, September 27th
Jay Briscoe vs. Roderick Strong
(First, I just wanna say wow, Im having soooo much fun in Sydney \(^^)/ just got here but ooh what beautiful weather and blue skies! Beats the muck and humidity of Seoul anyday (>_<) god I so don't want to go back, but Jeff needs me, speaking of which, here's his lame wrestling thoughts! LOL)
Crazy! That's all I can say after this one! If you like non-stop action, clean wrestling, big hits, holds and reversals, and everything else that makes wrestling great, well then, you must like a match like this!
This is what makes ROH so great, pure, unadulterated, competition. You can tell that Rod and Jay are great friends and they are only in there because the matchmakers put them together for the competition, not because of some silly, petty feud.
Congratulations to Roderick for getting the win here, but it could have gone either way! I'm calling for a rematch, pronto!
Match #179 – Monday, September 28th
Four Corner Survival: Silas Young vs. Claudio Castagnoli vs. Kenny Omega vs. Austin Aries
More amazing-ness! ROH continues to astound me, but somehow they followed up that previous classic bout with a bigger and better match!
At first, Austin and Claudio were being a bit silly, trying to stay in the ring and avoid any real contact, as a way to mock the fans, but soon Kenny and Silas couldn't take those cocky attitudes and ran in and just started out the wild wrestling mayhem!
Austin Aries may have grown a moustache and taken on a very negative attitude towards the fans, but I still feel some sympathy for him. I've been thinking a lot about that speech he gave on the last DVD that I watched, when he said that he didn't understand why the fans would so quickly cheer for Tyler Black, especially when Austin is still out there working hard to impress them all! He does have a point there, logically I can understand where he's coming from.
In the end of this one, Austin did a breathtaking super sunset bomb on Kenny from the top turnbuckle to the floor, knocking out the other two guys. Then he threw Kenny back in the ring, hit him with his corner dropkick and Brainbuster for the win. Although, I won't say that I totally approve of his recent back-attacking actions, I was cheering for Austin after that awesome sequence!
Match #180 – Tuesday, September 29th
Chris Hero & American Wolves vs. Bobby Dempsey, Kevin Steen & El Generico
"Big old Bobby Dempsey, you ain't got nothing!" Well, at least that's what you might think if you listened to that jerk Dave Prazak on commentary, but if you watched this match with your own two eyes, your heart would warm to see Bobby standing across from his tormenters, Hero and manager Larry Sweeney, and holding his own against such seasoned stars! Give ‘em hell Bobby!
Would you be surprised if I told you that it took outside interference and a chair for the American Wolves to beat Kevin Steen again? Well, it's true! My god, have a little pride in your profession boys, just try once to win a match fair and square. Why haven't the Ring of Honor officials taken some action against this team for their consistent rule breaking?
Match #181 – Wednesday, September 30th
Irish Airborne vs. Rhett Titus & Kenny King
(The Opera House, have you ever seen it? Probably not ;P Im guessing the closest most of u reading this get to world travel is watching those Intrecoastal title matches in wrestling LMAO Well anyways it's only like the most incredible thing in the world 2 c, and Ive been to Niagara Falls!)
>
Eww… man those two annoy me! Of course, I'm not talking about the Irish Airborne, a tag team that I think is the next Briscoe Brothers… nope, I mean Rhett and Kenny, two of the cockiest jerks you'll ever see. Kenny reminds me of Terrell Owens, always dancing around to celebrate something that isn't so great, and Rhett reminds me of crazy Larry from Three's Company! Made me so angry to see those guys win and then dance all over the ring on the way out! I hate that, shake some hands and show respect!
Match #182 – Thursday, October 1st
Bryan Danielson vs. Bison Smith
Dragon and the Beast! I didn't think Bryan had much of a chance in this one! Even though I just watched him duke it out with Takeshi Morishima in a brutal match at Final Battle 2008, that one was a Fight Without Honor so Bryan could do anything, but here he's in a regular match against the massive and powerful Bison… literally… Boo-Yah!
Bryan's scientific skill and master strategies only seemed to be making Bison angry throughout the match. Bryan's stick-to-it-edness kept him in it until he got the chance to perform one of his patented dives into the seats and take a bit of wind out of the monster. Although Bison recovered, another kick to the face on the floor probably helped to slow him down just enough so that Bryan could roll into the ring while Bison was too slow to get back in! Great strategy, yet again, Mr. Best-In-The-World!
(Hit Bondi Beach today and had a surfing lesson! Then I laid out on the beach, topless! O_o That's right, a young woman can take off her top here and not worry about a bunch of fucking geeks staring at her the whole time!)
Match #183 – Friday, October 2nd
Jimmy Jacobs & Delirious vs. Tyler Black & Jerry Lynn
Poor crazy Delirious! He worked so hard in this one only to be on the receiving end of a mistaken chair shot by Jimmy that cost his team the match. And of course, what does that egomaniac Jimmy Jacobs do afterwards, but berate and humiliate his partner. Good news for all those Delirious fans who've been waiting patiently for the talented savant to break away from Jimmy's deranged revolution ‘The Age of the Fall' because Delirious couldn't take the abuse anymore and he finally fought back!
Delirious isn't the most coherent or intelligent wrestler out there, as I don't think I've ever understood a word this guy has had to say, but he will be great on his own! Looks like Delirious' time in the Age of the Fall is Ov-aH!
Match #184 – Saturday, October 3rd
ROH Title Match: Nigel McGuiness vs. Brent Albright
Craziness! Crazy that Ric Flair was at ringside to witness one of the greatest title matches in St. Louis wrestling history! Sure, Flair might have been in his share in his day, but this one was just too much!
The way these two ripped and tore at each other's shoulders was just excruciating to watch! It was crazy that neither man tapped out in this one, as their shoulder muscles must be hanging by threads at this point! You wanna hear crazy? How about the Tower of London that Nigel gave Brent to the floor, then off the top rope, and then from the top rope through a table on the floor! And yet he kicked out every time!
I thought that this one was finally gonna be the one where Nigel lost the belt and I was cheering along when Brent locked in his Crowbar arm submission move in the middle of the ring! And then Claudio Castagnoli came in and broke it up, causing a disqualification! Those two thought they were gonna double team Brent after the bell, but not with the Nature Boy at ringside! Chop city! Pure craziness!
Let's hope Ric Flair comes out of retirement to take the belt from that cowardly Nigel McGuiness and teach him what it's like to be a true champion!

Look, another great Jesse Coy music review that happened right HERE in Seoul!
Did you see all those amazing ROH photos! They all come from this awesome photographer Scott Finkelstein and his incredible website, so check it out!
Wow, over already! Great, I barely had to do any editing this week, "Jake" must really be feeling better over there in Seoul, thank god, like I said, that I didn't get him a young pretty Korean nurse, but some gross old bitch who doesn't speak any English! That'll keep him from thinking too hard outside of the wrestling. I like how this it working out, I didn't really need to do much editing this week and good because I don't really want to while I'm enjoying Oz! I'm gonna let him do most of the work while I'm here, no worries!!
