411Mania's Squared Circle News Report 10.24.09
Posted by Dustin James on 10.24.2009

Welcome back inside the Squared Circle! How is everyone doing this week? I'm personally pumped up because tonight is UFC 104 "Machida vs. Shogun" and I'm always jacked up for a good UFC card. However, I have a wedding to attend (boooo-urns! Weddings suck...) today, so that puts a damper on my mood a little. I'd like to just kick back at home, then head out and down a few Jaeger bombs and watch some MMA action. That to me is a perfect Saturday. However, two people decide to go and fall in love and for some reason want to spend the rest of their lives together and I must be in attendance. Oh well, sometimes you have to do things you just don't want to do......

One great thing going on right now is that it's that time of the year where the sports world is just SET OFF! Not only do we have the MLB playoffs going on, but the NFL season and college football are almost at a halfway point, and now the NBA is set to tip off this week! I can't tell you how excited I'm for the NBA season this year. I'm expecting good things out of the Portland Trail Blazers and Greg Oden this year and I hope they don't let me down!

Anyways.......

LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!

Biggest News Of The Week:

Jim Ross Suffers Third Bells Palsy Attack......

Scary news for good ol JR.....

This is the second week in a row that the "biggest news of the week" has involved some bad news for the world of professional wrestling. Unfortunately, our favorite wrestling announcer, Jim Ross, suffered his third bells palsy attack on Monday during a plane ride from Oklahoma City to Columbia, South Carolina. Talk about a scary moment. Most people are afraid of flying as it is, now imagine if something like this happened to you and you couldn't receive in sort of instant medical treatment because you are in the SKY. Scary, scary, stuff if you ask me.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with bells palsy, here's a brief run down on the disease. It's a paralysis that makes it impossible to the control the muscles that are affected. As you old timers will remember, Jim Ross use to look and sound a little different back before his first bell's palsy attack in 1994. The disease is often caused by stress, so it probably didn't help that Vince McMahon fired him two weeks after his first attack. But it's all good now seeing as we all forgive Vince since he ended up giving JR the "Vice President of Talent Relations" job....which worked out TREMENDOUSLY! Seriously, when JR had that job (and not the douche who has it now) the roster was one of the best ever.

That's just one of the reasons the world needs JR. The man is the wrestling announcer of the last 15 years. Some would say he's the best ever and the fact that he has suffered another bells palsy attack has me worried as to how this will affect Ross's ability to do what he loves the most....announce wrestling matches (reports are that his voice is fine though, so consider that one big sigh of relief!). Not only is JR a WWE Hall-of-Famer, but for those of you who see a live wrestling show that JR is announcing....his entrance often gets one of the biggest pops of the night. That just goes to show you the love that people have for this man.

One interesting thing to note is, Ross's contract comes up in December. It's going to be interesting to see whether or not the WWE decides to offer Ross a new contract and if it will be for an announcing role or perhaps in another department altogether? One thing is for sure. We need JR to get healthy right away just so we don't have to put up with Michael Cole's announcing on two shows per week.

Get well soon JR!

Remember These Guys???

The Oddities

First off, I'm not going to deny it. I was a fan of The Oddities back when they had their run in the WWE in the late-90's. I've always been interested in freaks and let's face it, nothing was freakier than John Tenta in a mask worshiping South Park. Well, unless you are talking about the big and evil Kurrgan who is now a nice gentle giant who just wants to DANCE! Of course, you throw in some Luna Vachon and Giant Silva (who I don't recall ever actually wrestling a singles match) and you got yourself a quality freak show my friends!

I honestly thought that the Oddities had some potential when they made their debuts with the company as a heel group under the leadership of "The Jackal". Freaks can be highly entertaining and NOTHING is more entertaining than a group of HEEL freaks! So what does the WWE decide to do? Well, they decide to turn them babyface because wrestling fans apparently like to cheer on FREAKS! WELL DUH?!?!?!?!

In the end, the Oddities were probably best known for their theme song. It actually was a pretty good song, it just so happens that the band that sang it is one of the shittiest in the world. Yes, I'm talking about the Insane Clown Posse. Not only did ICP perform the theme song, but they officially joined the group and even started feuding with the Headbangers! Oh man, I sure do miss the "Attitude" days. Nothing says "attitude" more than clowns that rap!

The Oddities square off against another one of my favorite tag teams....KAIENTAI~!

Random News Bits:

- Nothing new to report on regarding Shane McMahon's departure from the WWE. Nobody is really speaking on either side so it's hard to get a feel about what's going on. However, the rumor mill is running rampant. People are whispering about how Shane McMahon has always wanted to run his own company with the WWE's backing (in the past he's tried to convince Vince to buy ECW, PRIDE and the UFC) and that could be something he may be interested in pursuing. We will see, but it really wouldn't shock me to see Shane try to get in the MMA game while it's sweltering hot.

- Hulk Hogan recently announced that he had contemplated suicide at one point. Apparently he had a gun and his finger was on the trigger until Laila Ali called him and said something to him that made him change his mind. I can't be the only one who thinks that Hogan would just no-sell the bullet and get up pointing his finger and shaking his head at the gun. HULK UP~!

- So, Nigel McGuinness may have had the quickest WWE run of any wrestler of all-time. Just when we all thought he was signed, sealed, and delivered. It seems that the WWE had changed their mind about signing McGuinness after putting him through some tests and determining that his body had already had too many injuries and so they decided to pull the offer. Therefore, TNA jumped at the chance to sign him (do you blame them?) and now he's wrestling with the company under the name "Desmond Wolfe" (sweet name!). I can't really blame TNA for jumping at the chance to sign McGuinness, but this is a bad deal for Nigel. He had a chance to wrestle for the #1 company in the world, but they turned him down because they deemed him "fragile". Oh well, the WWE's loss is TNA's gain I suppose......

- The Boogeyman has apparently returned from his little disappearing act. He said that he was in Argentina and had no way of contacting anyone. You see, when you are "further endeavored" by the WWE.....you can't even afford a cell phone.

- John Cena is taking time off in December to film a movie. It's going to be called Oxley's Road and Cena will be playing a pro wrestler (HUGGGGEEE stretch there!) who's kid brother is trying to make it big as a high school wrestler. I'm gonna be honest here....I sort of want to see this movie and I haven't even seen the trailer. I suppose I will wait to see the trailer before I decide to add it to the Netflix que in the future. You just never know with WWE produced movies.....

- Expect "Rowdy" Roddy Piper to be a guest host on RAW in the next few weeks. Apparently he wants to let people know that he's still alive (his words!). I'm always down for a Piper appearance on RAW, as long as the man doesn't get in the ring and decide to wrestle. He should be an entertaining guest host....as long as he keeps his shirt on.

- For an update on the disappearance of Carlito...apparently the creative team doesn't have anything for him at the moment, so the man is sitting at home collecting a paycheck. OK, it's about time to give it up with Carlito don't you think? Let the man take his apple over to TNA where he can coast through matches on Spike TV. I remember when Carlito made his debut in the WWE. There were big things expected from him, hell....he defeated John Cena for the WWE US Title in his TV debut with the company! However, the man hasn't improved in the ring and has grown quite stale over the years. He's definitely in need of some sort of gimmick make over if they decide to keep him, otherwise just cut the guy loose already.

- WWE has apparently been in talks with a former WCW world champion to host RAW in the near future! Who can it be???? Is it....Sting? Is it.....Lex Luger? Is it....Sid Vicious? NO! It's none of them! It's this guy.......

DAVID ARQUETTE!!

This could be good. Imagine if they have Arquette come in with a big head acting like he's hot shit being a former WCW champion and all. He then comes out and challenges anyone in the back. Then the current champion comes out (Cena/Orton?) and accepts the challenge. It's going to be WCW vs. WWE AGAIN~!! Finally, the main event comes and you can have someone like Chris Jericho come out and help Arquette win the WWE TITLE!!!!! IMAGINE THE RATINGS AND THE PUBLICITY THAT WOULD ATTRACT!!!.........sorry, I totally went Vince Russo on you there didn't I?

- Awesome Kong apparently knocked out a drunk dude at a bar after the Bound for Glory show. The guy was reportedly doing a little harassing at a hotel after the PPV and got KNOCKED OUT~! In all honesty.....would you pick a fight with this?

It doesn't matter how many beers I drink. I'm not messing with that guy!

- Mick Foley will once again be doing stand-up comedy. This time he will be performing with Colt Cabana at the Gotham Comedy Club in Manhattan on November 2. If you are going to this show, please tape it and put it on YouTube. I BEG YOU!!!

- In somewhat surprising news, the WWE has signed Lance Cade to a new deal. Cade worked for the WWE from 2001 to 2008 before being released last year after having a seizure on a plane ride. Many inside the WWE speculated that Cade had the seizure because he took something he shouldn't have been taking and so he was sent packing. I'm kind of glad to see Cade back. The dude deserves a second chance with the company and perhaps this time they can make him entertaining....

- If you would like to listen to a great interview with one of the developers of Smackdown vs. RAW 2010 then just click here. The Hit The Ropes Radio Show is always a good listen.....

- OK, while this last part isn't really considered "news", it's just something that needs to be seen by everyone...so of course I will post it. You see, being a writer here at 411mania.com, you get some pretty awkward emails at times. Well, none of them have topped this gem I received the other day. When I opened the email I wasn't expecting much, but what I saw was just too good to resist, so here it is.......

SOME RANDOM STALKER GUYS LOVE LETTER TO MICKIE JAMES:

Wrestling Top 10 Lists:

Top 10 Best WCW Halloween Havoc Wrestlers

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. It's the only holiday you can dress up in a wacky costume, get drunk, and NOT get arrested! So, for the next few weeks I'll be doing WCW Halloween Havoc top 10 related lists. This week, I'll be ranking the best wrestlers in Halloween Havoc history. The way I ranked these were that I gave a lot of points for the amount of appearances at Halloween Havoc, the wrestlers win/loss record at the event, and of course...a little personal bias (I'm also handing out little points for quality of match). So enjoy!.........

This list is in a particular order......

10) Arn Anderson

Halloween Havoc Record: 1-4-1

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- fought Doom to a double count-out for the NWA World Tag Team Titles. Ric Flair was his partner. (Halloween Havoc 1990)

- defeated The Patriots to retain the WCW Tag Team Titles. Larry Zybsko was his partner. (Halloween Havoc 1991)

- lost to Tom Zenk, Shane Douglas, and Johnny Gunn. Michael Hayes and Bobby Eaton were his tag partners. (Halloween Havoc 1992)

- lost to Dustin Rhodes. (Halloween Havoc 1994)

- lost to Ric Flair and Sting. Brian Pillman was his partner. (Halloween Havoc 1995)

- lost to Lex Luger. (Halloween Havoc 1996)

Arn Anderson was with WCW so long, he actually could have had a few more appearances at the event had he not ran into injuries. I don't know if that would have been a good or bad thing for ol "Double A" considering his horrible record at the PPV. In the end, it doesn't matter as Arn Anderson is one of those names that pops in your head when you think of WCW....who cares if he lost to Tom Zenk, Shane Douglas, and Johnny Gunn at the 1992 PPV (WTF???)!

Here's Ric Flair and Arn Anderson vs. Ron Simmons and Butch Reed (aka DOOM) at Halloween Havoc 1990.........

9) "Diamond" Dallas Page

Halloween Havoc Record: 2-3

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- lost to Johnny B. Badd in a WCW TV Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1995)

- defeated Eddie Guerrero. (Halloween Havoc 1996)

- lost to Randy Savage in a "Las Vegas Death Match". (Halloween Havoc 1997)

- lost to Goldberg in a WCW World Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1998)

- defeated Ric Flair in a "Strap Match". (Halloween Havoc 1999)

Can you imagine what DDP's career could have been like had he not started wrestling at such an old age? Just looking at his Halloween Havoc resume has me missing the self proclaimed "MASTER OF THE DIAMOND CUTTER"! Say what you want about DDP, but the man always brought it at Halloween Havoc. His match with Randy Savage in 1997 was a thing of beauty, his world title fight with Goldberg in 1998 wasn't too shabby either, and hell...at least the strap match with Ric Flair was entertaining! DDP seemed like a WCW "4 lifer" and if the company was still in business today, I bet he would still be running around handing out "self high fives".......

It's DDP vs. Goldberg for the WCW world title........

8) Big Van Vader

Halloween Havoc Record: 3-1

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- lost to El Gigante, the Steiner Brothers, and Sting in the "Chamber of Horrors Match". Abdullah the Butcher, Cactus Jack, and Diamond Stuff were his tag team partners. (Halloween Havoc 1991)

- defeated Nikita Koloff. (Halloween Havoc 1992)

- defeated Cactus Jack in a "Texas Death Match". (Halloween Havoc 1993)

- defeated the Guardian Angel. (Halloween Havoc 1994)

I remember first laying eyes on Vader during his WCW run....I was scared to death of the dude. His WCW run was WAY too short though (WCW actually booked him better than WWE did) and he would be ranked much higher on this list had he not left for the WWE. However, Vader gets mega bonus points on this list for his awesome match with Cactus Jack in 1993.....

Here's Vader vs. Nikita Koloff, it's VADER TIME~!.........

7) Randy Savage

Halloween Havoc Record: 3-1

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- defeated Zodiac. (Halloween Havoc 1995)

- defeated Lex Luger. (Halloween Havoc 1995)

- lost to "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan in a WCW World Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1996)

- defeated Diamond Dallas Page in a "Las Vegas Death Match". (Halloween Havoc 1997)

Randy Savage is one of my all-time favorite wrestlers, which will explain his ranking here. Savage only had a decent career at Halloween Havoc, but it was impressive enough to earn a spot in the top 10. He defeated both Zodiac (Brutus Beefcake) and Lex Luger in the same night at HH 1995. Then he had somewhat of a stinker match with Hulk Hogan in 1996, but ended his Havoc career with an awesome match with DDP in 1997. I sure do miss Randy Savage and I wish he would just patch things up with the WWE already.......

And it's Randy Savage vs. THE ZODIAC!!!........

6) Hulk Hogan

Halloween Havoc Record: 3-3

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- defeated Ric Flair in a "Steel Cage Retirement Match" to retain the WCW World Title. (Halloween Havoc 1994)

- lost to The Giant in a WCW World Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1995)

- defeated Randy Savage in a WCW World Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1996)

- lost to "Rowdy" Roddy Piper in a "Steel Cage Match". (Halloween Havoc 1997)

- defeated The Warrior. (Halloween Havoc 1998)

- lost to Sting in a in a WCW World Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1999)

A few weeks back I mentioned that Hulk Hogan may very well be the worst wrestler in WCW Halloween Havoc history. Well, I was exaggerating then. The truth is, while Hogan's matches may have stunk the place up, they were all main event worthy bouts and one of the main reasons you bought the PPV's to begin with. Hate Hogan or worship him, the man belongs on a ton of "best of" lists....and this is just one of them.

Hogan vs. Sting! Who can forget the two plus years of build up for that match (at Starrcade)?......

5) Rick Steiner

Halloween Havoc Record: 4-1

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- lost to Doom. Scott Steiner was his tag team partner. (Halloween Havoc 1989)

- defeated The Nasty Boys in a NWA United States Tag Team Title match. Scott Steiner was his tag team partner. (Halloween Havoc 1990)

- defeated Abdullah the Butcher, Cactus Jack, Big Van Vader, and the Diamond Studd in the "Chamber of Horrors" match. Scott Steiner, El Gigante, and Sting were his tag team partners. (Halloween Havoc 1991)

- defeated The Giant and Scott Steiner for the WCW World Tag Team Titles. Buff Bagwell was his tag team partner. (Halloween Havoc 1998)

- defeated Chris Benoit for the WCW World TV Title. (Halloween Havoc 1999)

What the hell??? How can Rick Steiner be ranked above greats such as Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage? Ohhh, that's right! Because Halloween Havoc was Rick Steiner's event! If you take out that loss to Doom at the very first HH, then Steiner would be undefeated at the PPV! Steiner gets mega bonus points for capturing the WCW TV title and tag team titles in back to back years in 1998 and 1999. Kudos to you "Dogfaced Gremlin".......

It's Rick Steiner vs. "OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU POSTED THAT GUY'S MATCH!!!".....

4) Ric Flair

Halloween Havoc Record: 2-4-1

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- defeated The Great Muta and Terry Funk in a "Thunderdome" match. Sting was his tag team partner. (Halloween Havoc 1989)

- fought Doom to a double-count out for the NWA World Tag Team Titles. Arn Anderson was his tag team partner. (Halloween Havoc 1990)

- lost to Rick Rude in a WCW International World Heavyweight Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1993)

- lost to Hulk Hogan in a "Steel Cage Retirement" match for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. (Halloween Havoc 1994)

- defeated Brian Pillman and Arn Anderson. Sting was his tag team partner (Halloween Havoc 1995)

- lost to Curt Hennig in a WCW United State Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1997)

- lost to Diamond Dallas Page in a "Strap Match". (Halloween Havoc 1999)

While Ric Flair was THE legend of legends in WCW, he didn't have the best of luck at the Halloween Havoc event. However, the man managed to perform at 6 different shows and that my friends is impressive.....especially considering there are only twelve Havoc's. Not only that, but every match he was in was memorable for some reason....even if it was only for doing something like turning on your partner (much like Flair did to Sting in 1995). Either way, anyway you crack it, Ric Flair was WCW and it really shouldn't come as a surprise that he would be ranked this high on the list.

Who wants to see the "Nature Boy" get whipped by DDP?......

3) Goldberg

Halloween Havoc Record: 4-0

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- defeated Diamond Dallas Page in a WCW World Heavyweight Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1998)

- defeated Sid Vicious in a WCW United States Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1999)

- defeated Sting in a WCW World Heavyweight Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1999)

- defeated KroniK in a "Handicap Elimination" match. (Halloween Havoc 2000)

It's scary to think what Goldberg could have been had WCW not gone down the shitter. He's the only wrestler on this list who is undefeated at Halloween Havoc and almost every single one of his bouts was a title fight. I didn't even mention the fact that he defeated both members of KroniK in a "handicap elimination" match in less than 4 minutes! One thing WCW sure did right was the booking of Goldberg (well, for most of his run at least...). As a matter of fact, I'm betting if WCW was still in existence today that Goldberg would be 12-0 at the show with eight plus world title reigns under his belt. That's how much WCW loved Goldberg......

It's DDP vs. Goldberg!...........

2) Lex Luger

Halloween Havoc Record: 6-2

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- defeated Brian Pillman in a NWA United States title match. (Halloween Havoc 1989)

- lost to Stan Hansen in a NWA United States title match. (Halloween Havoc 1990)

- defeated Ron Simmons in a two out of three falls match for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. (Halloween Havoc 1991)

- defeated Meng. (Halloween Havoc 1995)

- lost to Randy Savage. (Halloween Havoc 1995)

- defeated Arn Anderson. (Halloween Havoc 1996)

- defeated Scott Hall. (Halloween Havoc 1997)

- defeated Bret Hart. (Halloween Havoc 1999)

Lex Luger should never be ranked this high on a wrestling "top 10" list unless it has the name "worst" in front of it. However, shockingly...the man was one of the best wrestlers ever when it came to showing up at the Halloween Havoc PPV. Not only that, but the men he faced at the show are like a "who's who" of wrestling legends. I mean, Stan Hansen, Brian Pillman, Randy Savage, Arn Anderson, Bret Hart and more. Say what you want about Luger as a performer, but the truth is...he's one of the best wrestlers ever in the Halloween Havoc era. (Not like that means much though...)

It's Lex Luger vs. Bret Hart! Remember when they both won the Royal Rumble while in the WWE?.....

1) Sting

Halloween Havoc Record: 7-3

Halloween Havoc Appearances:

- defeated The Great Muta and Terry Funk in a "Thunderdome" match. Ric Flair was his tag team partner. (Halloween Havoc 1989)

- defeated Sid Vicious in a NWA World Heavyweight Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1990)

- defeated Abdullah the Butcher, Cactus Jack, Big Van Vader and the Diamond Studd in the "Chamber of Horrors" match. El Gigante and the Steiner Brothers were his tag team partners. (Halloween Havoc 1991)

- defeated Jake "The Snake" Roberts in a "Coal Miner's Glove" match. (Halloween Havoc 1992)

- defeated Sid Vicious. (Halloween Havoc 1993)

- defeated Brian Pillman and Arn Anderson. Ric Flair was his tag team partner. (Halloween Havoc 1995)

- lost to Bret Hart in a WCW United States Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1998)

- defeated Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. (Halloween Havoc 1999)

- lost to Goldberg in a WCW World Heavyweight Title match. (Halloween Havoc 1999)

- lost to Jeff Jarrett. (Halloween Havoc 2000)

Ahhhh Sting. The one man who TRULY was WCW. The one man who stuck to his guns and never bolted WCW for the high life of the WWE. The one man who you could always count on in WCW to put on a good show. So, needless to say...it should come as no surprise that Sting wins MY award for the "best wrestler in Halloween Havoc history". He did fight at both the first AND the final Halloween Havoc's. That HAS to mean something.....right? Either way, enjoy your award Sting....you deserved it so!

Here it is, Sting vs. Jeff Jarrett...aren't you excited!?!?!.......

Where Muta? I don't care uf he was only involved in 1 Halloween Havoc..... he's THE GREAT FUCKING MUTA !

What a good match Jarrett vs Sting could have been if they just sent the two guys there and asked them to do their thing with a result at the end - but no, Russo had to overbook it like anything! Havoc 2000 was probably the lowest of lows in WCW 2000 apart from Arquette...

Posted By: AJ4 (Guest)  on October 24, 2009 at 01:42 AM

Sting is the truth man.True legend....

WCW died cuz of Russos big idea of putting the title on Arquete;;that shit put the death of the company into over drive.

It boggles my mind how someone can fuck up a company with such huge stars, enormous roster, history and second largest fanbase in the world to not being able to tape certain shows as standalone cards.

Russo is an idiot and he should be castrated.

I still can't understand why they split up Carlito and Primo. The two were putting on some great matches together, especially with Miz/Morrison. Now they're both dead weight. Pair them up again and send them to Smackdown to feud with the Hart Dynasty.

For some reason, I have a feeling that love letter to Mickie James is someone just messing around. No one could possibly write that badly unless they were just looking for a response.

OMG that letter was so sweet, I have been thinking about you always. I just don't want to ever meet you because you are fat, ugly, and still live with your parents. Thanks anyways, if you write another letter and Dustin James posts it again, I may change my mind, so keep think oof letters to write me!

Unwanted talentless hack will be expose after my American hero beats him.

Oh it's real, it's damn real!

Russo should of named him Desmond Dumbo (D^2) have you seen those ears! Maybe he'll fly right off my tv screen.

That letter is the reason Mickie should get the F out of the business while the getting is good. Her fans are so creepy and obsessive that I could see one of them taking things too far some day. And everybody else calls her fat and compares her to farm animals. I'm not even a fan of her(I actually think she sucks as a performer and is not much to look at). But I do sort of feel bad for her. If she has a college degree now would be the time to start using it.

What was scary was that dudes sentence structure. That was a hell of a run on sentence...

..hopefully this dude doesn't try to assassinate someone to get her attention.

Wow, what a creepy letter...I myself would have written that to Beth Phoenix, but then again I like Amazonian women who are going to overpwoer me--oh wait, this isn't the Amazonian women's fetish site, is it?

I'm so glad you didn't put Big Papa Slump in this list...and I'm surprised you put THAT GUy in there...I thought he didn't exist anymore according to the E...

Perhaps the fact that Primo and Carlito garnered absolute ZERO crowd reaction might have been a small part in the WWEs decision to break them up
