411's Wrestler of the Week 10.26.09: Week 30
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 10.26.2009
Desmond Wolfe makes a big debut, Randy Orton and John Cena battle in an iron man match, the MCMG's win Ultimate X and more! Check out the latest edition of 411's Wrestler of the Week for all the details and for an updated look at the Year-End standings!
Welcome to Week 30, Year FIVE, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder
Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this
Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks
something like this
1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1
...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year at WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week
The Voting~! Ryan Byers
1) Kofi Kingston
Yes, he was the guy who got pinned in the fourteen man tag team match at the Bragging Rights pay per view. Thus, if you focus on what happened to a guy's career in storyline terms, he's a ridiculous choice for Wrestler of the Week. However, my approach to this column has always been to look at things primarily from a non-kayfabe perspective, and, in those terms, Kofi's stock rose more than anybody else's this week. Yes, he dropped a fall, but, in doing so, he apparently began a feud with Ted DiBiase Jr. and Cody Rhodes and then made a save for John Cena in the main event. It appears that Kingston is the first guy to move out of the Raw midcard pack who have been trading meaningless wins with each other for the last six months. We'll just see if his elevation manages to stick.
2) The Undertaker - John Cena's title win this week seemed to me like it was a given, and, though I didn't think that it was completely outside the realm of possibilities, I was a good deal more surprised by the Undertaker retaining his championship.
3) Kota Ibushi - As far as in-ring performances are concerned, I don't think anybody did anything more impressive this week than Kota Ibushi. He wrestled two consecutive matches, one twenty-five minutes long and one fifteen minutes long, against a blow-up doll. It sounds like a joke at first, but, if you think about how difficult it would be to put on a pro wrestling match against an inanimate object for forty straight minutes, it goes from being a joke to being pretty damned impressive.
4) Toshiaki Kawada
5) Naruki Doi
ARI
1) The Undertaker
Taker kept the World Heavyweight Title in a week where it seemed like he could have easily lost the it on two different occasions (on Friday through booking machinations and on Sunday against three other wrestlers in a promotion that has a trigger-finger on changing titles). More than that, he goes over two of Smackdown's top wrestlers in CM Punk and Batista.
2) John Cena & Randy Orton (tie): The ridiculousness of eleven falls in sixty minutes aside (and yes, while I thought it was a great match, I also wasn't a fan of that many falls in The Rock vs. HHH Iron-Man from 2000), its asking a lot for a wrestler to go sixty minutes these days and both men passed the test. Cena won the WWE Title, but since he just lost it three weeks ago, the rapid fire changes dilute its significance so that I can't put either man in first place this week.
3) Desmond Wolfe: The former Nigel McGuinness had the entire wrestling world glued to his every movement early in the week. The shock of his signing to TNA to the hot debate about why it came about, to the name change, to going over Kurt Angle, one of TNA's signature wrestlers, in two separate vignettes all adds up to Wolfe ranking on this list this week.
4) Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin)
5) Chris Jericho
Andy Clark
1) John Cena
The match was nothing to write home about, and the outcome benefits nobody, but John Cena scores his seventh World Title which qualifies him under my own rules.
2) Desmond Wolf: Probably the true Wrestler of the Week, Desmond Wolf made his big time wrestling debut and destroyed Kurt Angle in the process.
3) Batista: Batista may have been pinned in the World Heavyweight Title Match at Bragging Rights but his heel turn on Rey Mysterio post-match was a thing of beauty and could really rejuvenate his career.
4) Chris Jericho
5) Yoshi Tatsu
Robert S. Leighty Jr
1) John Cena
I was there live in Pittsburgh and the Main Event was a damn fine match. I was there for Benoit/HHH Iron Man match in the same building and the crowd was chanting "boring" and "Here we go Steelers," during that match. That didn't happen tonight as the crowd was with Orton and Cena eact step of the way. Sure the added stipulation of anything goes covered any weaknesses either of these would have in a straight 60 minute match, but credit the booking. Cena wins the WWE Title again (which pisses me off because these constant title changes are nuts), but a Title win gets you big points in my rankings.
2) Randy Orton: Orton was crazy over with a good portion of the crowd in Mellon Arena, and he more than held his own in this match. I loved the small touches that Orton brought to the match and for entertaining me for an hour he gets the #2 spot.
3) Desmond Wolfe: Any week without this PPV, he is my clear #1 choice for Wrestler of the Week. That's how you make a debut and hopefully things continue to roll for him in TNA.
4) The Undertaker
5) The Miz/Chris Jericho (tie)
Shawn S. Lealos
1) Desmond Wolfe
That is how to debut a character. He came into TNA, less than a week after we learned he was NOT going to be joining the WWE, and immediately beat the crap out of Kurt Angle, arguably the best wrestler in the company. Then at the end of the show, when Angle called him out, he took out Angle again. And it looks like it will only get better from here. He went from the top star in Ring of Honor to a main eventer in TNA in one show. It's better than they treated Aries.
2) John Cena: I thought he was going to take the loss and jump to Smackdown. Instead, he beats Randy Orton, regains his championship, and - per the stipulations - Orton can no longer fight for the title. Where is there to go from here for the Raw brand championship?
3) The Miz: I said this last week: I thought John Morrison was going to be the star and The Miz would be a mid-carder. Now, The Miz is the U.S. Champion and beat his former partner by pinfall. Maybe he is awesome!
4) The Motor Citty Machine Guns
5) Dave Batista
Samuel Berman
1) Desmond Wolfe
Made a big splash in his TNA debut by starting a feud with Kurt Angle.
2) Delirious: Continues to raise his stock worldwide with a great showing in Pro Wrestling NOAH's Jr. Heavyweight tournament.
3) John Cena and Randy Orton: Pulled off an hour-long contest in an era where they have all but disappeared.
4) Naruki Doi
5) Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin
Michael Bauer
1) Nigel "Desmond Wolfe" McGuinness
Yes, Taker and Cena won big. So what else is new? Seriously, the biggest stock that rose this week was with Nigel McGuinness. The guys debuts on TNA and his first feud is with Kurt Angle!?! I mean, talk about being given a huge feud to start. Bonus points for making me mark out on the Tower of London spot.
2) John Cena: Not to say that his title win wasn't totally impressive, same for the match itself.
3) Kota Ibushi: I have to agree with Byers. It's crazy, but man it is something.
4) The Miz
5) Undertaker / Batista (tie)
THE Larry Csonka
1) Desmond Wolfe
Nigel McGuinness appeared on ROH on HDNet this week, but really shook things up when it was revealed that he would sign with TNA instead of WW as first thought. Regardless of the circumstances, his appearance on HDNet, along with his great debut on Impact earn him the WOTW title with me.
2) Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin): The Motor City Machine Guns have finally been let loose. They started last week by pulling double duty on the PPV, and now won the Ultimate X on TV to get a tag title shot. These guys are gold, and it appears as if TNA will finally let them run, and it is about time.
3) Yoshi Tatsu: Yoshi has been on a roll, and is now the #1 contender for the ECW Title. Yosho has been fun to watch, and now we'll see what he has as he faces Christian, who has been consistently one of the best performers that everyone forgets about.
4) John Cena
5) The Miz
Aaron Hubbard
1) Desmond Wolfe
Shocked the wrestling world by signing with TNA when WWE got cold feet. Was rewarded by beating up Kurt Angle and hitting the Tower of London off the top rope to close the show in his debut. This was certainly the most impactful debut of a wrestler in quite some time, and Nigel's stock has risen tremendously.
2) John Cena/Randy Orton: At the end of the day, Iron Man Matches aren't about who wins and who loses. It's about proving your worth. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels proved that they were two of the best wrestlers in the world. Triple H and the Rock proved that you could overcome faults by giving great effort and masking your flaws. Angle and Brock complemented their terrific wrestling by adding a compelling character in Brock. This match was a little of all three. Regardless of any criticisms, Cena and Orton had an amazing brawl for ONE HOUR, and had the crowd with them the whole time. I toast you both.
3) The Miz: I think people are REALLY ignoring the significance of this huge win over John Morrison. This was the right call and Miz is going to croon about this for a long time.
4) Batista
5) Toshiaki Kawada
Daniel Wilcox
1) John Cena/Randy Orton: The title win isn't so significant because they've traded the strap back and forth for a while now, but regardless of whatever else went on this week, these guys wrestled for an hour in what was one hell of a match, even if it wasn't a total classic. Orton in particular excelled; his facial expressions and mannerisms both in this match at on Raw were brilliant. Cena got the big win though, and as such both guys get the top spot for Wrestler of the Week.
2) Desmond Wolf: Wolf had a big, big debut this week and although he missed out on a chance at the big time, it looks like he will be a major player in TNA.
3) Ted DiBiase: DiBiase's performance on Raw suggests that not only will he soon find himself in a high-profile feud with Orton, but that the fans are willing to get behind him when he does eventually turn on his mentor.
4) Motor City Machineguns
5) Batista
Jeremy Thomas
1) John Cena
Cena ended his feud with Randy Orton once and for all--for now--by beating him in an Iron Man match and proving once and for all--again, for now--who the top dog was on Raw. The match may not have been the best Iron Man match out there but it was quite good, and it helped lift the Pay-Per-View's quality quite a bit.
2) Desomnd Wolfe: Desmond debuted huge in TNA, taking out the top guy in Kurt Angle not once, but twice. Talk about making an impact.
3) Batista/Kurt Angle: Both of these guys had turns that played out beautifully and looks to really freshen up their characters. That has me excited for them.
4) Kofi Kingston
5) The Undertaker

As usual Byers proves himself to be a ridiculous tool. You're just a joke now.

VINTAGE BERMAN!

Hmm, I'm not sure why everyone is giving Berman shit this week. His picks are actually pretty good. If anything, Ryan Byers should be getting the hit... his picks are rediculous.

VINTAGE BYERS!
I mean, what tool would neglect the biggest signing of the modern era?
Oh yeah...Byers would.
Posted By: Michael Cole (Guest) on October 26, 2009 at 03:47 PM
@Jamal: You ever watch Saturday Night Live? You know how they'll catch fire with a funny recurring character, like It's Pat or the cheerleaders or Goat Boy? And so they'll run it every week right into the ground until it isn't funny anymore. And then they keep running it, week after week, until you want to stab somebody.
But at least on SNL, they take the hint eventually and kill the character loooong before the 150th week or so.
Interpret this comment however you like.

40 minute match against an inflatable doll IS A JOKE.
People like Byers and Bauer vote stupidly every week but that has got to be the biggest piss-take of all.
Posted By: BBM (Guest) on October 26, 2009 at 04:04 PM
Everyone gets it but Byers as usual.

You mean like how everyone is sick and tired of your sanctimonious, holier than thou garbage and yet you continue to spew it?
Yep. I see the parallels.

Wolf wins, Byers fails.
"my approach to this column has always been to look at things primarily from a non-kayfabe perspective"
Yeah that's would work if you had any clue what's going on from a non-kayfabe perspective, you mark.

"It appears that Kingston is the first guy to move out of the Raw midcard pack who have been trading meaningless wins with each other for the last six months."
__________
That statement seems to completely contradict itself. Wouldn't, by your own definition, those "meaningless" wins cease to BE meaningless if Kofi Kingston (or anyone else for that matter) was elevated from them? Isn't that the entire purpose of HAVING a midcard?
Posted By: BJC (Guest) on October 26, 2009 at 04:55 PM
Regarding Berman and Bauer's picks this week: I think you'd better check the 411 basement for pods. And Byers, you don't have to point out that your choice is ridiculous; ridiculous is what we expect from you.
Posted By: the ghost of Gordon Solie (Guest) on October 26, 2009 at 04:56 PM
Nigond McWolfe at #1. Hell yeah.
Where is the "no one cares about ROH wrestlers and they'll never mean anything" crowd hiding?
Posted By: saneiac (Guest) on October 26, 2009 at 05:23 PM
So since Byers not watching TNA is his explanation for not voting for them, that MUST mean that EVERY 411 writers see all these puro matches each week, since you know, they shouldn't be voting for wrestlers they don't see...
And if you saved your money on Bragging Rights? No votes for any of those guys.
Posted By: ScottyFlamingo (Guest) on October 26, 2009 at 05:28 PM

No one's REALLY giving Berman shit this week (at least not yet), and even if Byers's picks are ridiculous, at least they mostly include the top dogs of their respective promotions(everyone other than Kingston either won or retained their promotion's top titles). Kofi was involved in the only Bragging Rights match I actually cared about, so props to Ryan for that pick.
Also, big ups to anyone who included MCMG...had almost that they actually were relevant this week.

Having no name value but attacking Kurt Angle means you are the wrestler of the week? It means more than winning or succesfully defending a title? So essentially if I break into Angle's house and attack him while he is taking a nap, I too could get wrestler of the week?
Posted By: Ox Harrison (Guest) on October 26, 2009 at 05:34 PM
Wow, Wolf only appears for less than 20 minutes and wins WOTW? The same week where Cena and Orton has an epic ironman match for the biggest championship in wrestling history?
WHAT A COMPLETE JOKE! FIRE ALL OF THESE CLOWNS! They obviously know nothing about wrestling.
Posted By: Peep #3027 (Guest) on October 26, 2009 at 06:32 PM
Holy Shitballs. If Nigel is booked anything like his debut for the next month, he'll be top 5.

Bring a camera crew, get it broadcast on national television (not the nightly news, 'natch) and maybe we'll petition the rise of OX HARRISON to the WOTW standings.
And only if you do a frog splash off of his couch.

I know he gets some stick, but I thought Orton had a brilliant week - his segment with Ted on RAW was ace, and he carried most of the Iron Man match too...it all reminded me just how good he was at the start of the year...it's him taken this long to recover from that WMXXV "main-event" with HHH...
Posted By: Guest#7629 (Guest) on October 26, 2009 at 08:09 PM
Would have expected Batista to get more recognition for actually giving people a reason to care about him anymore.

How can Desmond Wolfe be wrestler of the week. He didnt even do anything.
OMG I HATE TNA. Kind of funny how fans thinkb they are better than WWE. ahahahahahahaha i feel sorry for them. I mean there ratings only jsut beat ecw ratings. Poor things. Aj Styles and Kurt Angle I have respect for.

Dude, read the supplemental column to see how they judge. That's why I have no problem with 90% of the votes, given that they've said that they're bringing in non-kayfabe advancement (Byers) and a preference for independence (Berman).
Problem is, Byers plain and simple ignores TNA, and tends to make that his only criteria for ignoring certain wrestlers. Kofi gets his vote for career advancement the same week Nigel McGuiness goes into a feud with the top draw at TNA. That only works if you include this week's RAW, but it still doesn't explain why you ignore Desmond Wolf

Exactly! Byers just shows that he's a hypocrite and bitter that TNA actually got better once he stopped reviewing it week after week.
If you're talking about non-kayfabe career advancement, years from now more people will be talking about how Nigel McGuiness made a bigger splash than Kofi ever did.

How little you know, tool.
Desmond Wolfe made THE biggest iMPACT (pun intended) of his career. He debuted hot and is in a good feud with the BEST wrestler in the industry today. John Cena and Randy Orton fought for the 2929349th time and it lost its luster because it was the SAME...OLD...SHIT (multiplied by five).
Posted By: Industry (Guest) on October 27, 2009 at 02:59 AM
Ya know...Orton can't fight for the WWE title anymore. They teased Cena possibly going to Smackdown. Batista just turned heel.
Maybe once Legacy splits...Orton heads to Smackdown?
Posted By: Doink the Clown (Guest) on October 27, 2009 at 08:19 AM
What a week for WOTW...Cena/Orton, D. Wolfe, MCMG, Batista, Taker, Kofi (although this next week is probably better for him) and as always Jericho who should be #1 every week so I will just leave him off my list.
1.Cena
2.Wolfe
3.Kofi
4.MCMG
5.Batista
HM.Orton/Taker

SHIT! I forgot The Miz!!!
Posted By: nomar34 (Guest) on October 27, 2009 at 10:52 AM
C'mon Byers...i'm not one to bitch too much but to have Taker, who was not even the highlight of his own 10 min 4 way match, ranked #2 and not even give a nibble to Cena who won the title in a 60 min iron man match that was the best match of the show by far even if you didn't think it was a **** affair, is utter ridiculousness...
i enjoy the indies too and would of felt better about it if you have ranked 5 indie wrestlers most people have never heard of...but if you are going to give points to someone in the WWE at least let it be the right guy...Taker probably just barely makes the top 5 in "the E" alone with Cena, Orton, Kofi, Batista, Miz, Jericho, Christian, Dibiase, Yoshi and Punk all having great weeks...

The one sad thing for Nigel/Desmond is that now that he is no longer in ROH and now in TNA, Byers will never vote for him again.

It sounds like a joke at first, but, if you think about how difficult it would be to put on a pro wrestling match against an inanimate object for forty straight minutes, it goes from being a joke to being pretty damned impressive"
As Stalker Ichikawa proved, WRESTLING it for 40 minutes is not an achievement. BEATING the damned thing IS

So because I wrestler a giant one-eyed monster for over 30 minutes last week (and beat it so hard it was all red and stuff), I could have a go at "wrestler of the week"? It wasn't easy, mind you and required lots of movement and stamina.
