Match A Day 11.04.09: Week 29 - The Road Warriors
Posted by Jake Chambers on 11.04.2009

Previously on Match A Day:

-Jake Chambers swore off watching Pro-Wrestling in regular continuity following the continual letdown of television and pay-per-view, finally culminating at the super lame Wrestlemania 25.

-taking a break from reading websites, backstage gossip, and taping and live results, Jake decided to only watch ONE match a day of old matches and international wrestling, while following the American continuity on delay, buying DVDs and borrowing tapes a few months in advance, inspired by the way in which he usually followed Ring of Honor.

-then "Jake" (not his real name) had a breakdown and now he's not as much of as smart ass as he used to be! Me, I'm his girlfriend Katie (you'll know it's me talking when you see this beautiful red font) and I have to take care of him 24/7 now, and just to keep him happy I let him watch one match a day and write out his rambling, moronic thoughts, which I then copy edit into something decent… You're welcome :P

-I recently left the Seoul, Korea bedside of Jake for a few weeks to visit some friends in Sydney, Australia. Jake has been fully capable of banging out his part of the column, and I have done my part editing it online but I'm gonna let him do most of the work because I don't really want to work while I'm enjoying Oz!

-don't be worried about Jake's health either cuz I've got an old old Korean nurse taking care of him… and keeping him from any dangerous overstimulation!

And now MAD Week 29 begins...

Whoa… I got my hands on this incredible DVD set that honors THE most dominant tag team in the history of wrestling! There is no doubt that the Road Warriors/Legion of Doom are the best tag team ever and definitely my favorite tag team of all time!!! If you're looking to prove me wrong, sorry pal, not gonna happen today!

Match #192 – Sunday, October 11th
Texas Tornado Match: Road Warriors vs. Jack & Gerry Brisco
[Georgia Championship Wrestling, August 1983]

Animal is doing special commentary for this match and explains that it took place within the first six months of the career of the Road Warriors. His classy comments here were very kind about his saggy bodied, grandpa looking opponents and how they could still be some kind of threat to the undefeatable force of the Legion of Doom!

The over powered and out matched Briscos grabbed chairs and knocked the Road Warriors outside of the ring to end the match in a disqualification, but who could blame them? This was the first of many flimsy, weak opponents that would face the Road Warriors and have to bow down in defeat to the best.

Match #193 – Monday, October 12th
AWA Tag Team Titles Match: Road Warriors vs. Fabulous Freebirds
[AWA Superclash, September 1985]

Those southern racists, the Freebirds, mockingly painted their faces with General Lee flags, isolated The Hawk during most of this match. It was so cool though because he would be dazed for a moment and then back on his feet fighting to make the tag right away. He's like a robot! When he finally got the tag, all I know is that I saw Animal press slam big fat Terry Gordy! That must have been like 300+ pounds!

Then for some reason, The Hawk was on the outside, fighting off the Freebirds' manager while Animal was double-teamed on the inside! Michael Hayes even came off the top rope and hit Animal in the back of the head with a pair of brass knuckles! The Hawk wasn't even paying attention! Then the Freebirds got the pinfall!

But wait just a minute! Thanks to video replay, the decision was reversed and the Road Warriors got to keep their titles! Nice! I don't know why video replay isn't used more in wrestling, since I see so much cheating going on! You couldn't get away with the in the NFL or NBA, so why does the WWE allow it so much?

(just butting in for a quickie to say wassup to all my fans ;P and give a big <3 to my new fav city Sydney Oz… I do soooo miss Jeff… I mean "Jake"… but c'mon, he'd want me to have fun and he'd want to pay for it 2! G'day mates LOL)

Match #194 – Tuesday, October 13th
Scaffold Match: Road Warriors vs. Midnight Express
[NWA Starrcade, November 1986]

Historic! The point of a scaffold match was very simple, throw you opponents off the massive scaffold down to the mat. Yeah, simple… simply insane! Boo-Yah

Hawk and Animal start off on top of the scaffold showing just how fearless they are, while those creeps in the Midnight Express are total chickens! They can't even climb the side of the scaffold without freaking out! And then they basically just held onto the sides, not wanting to walk across the plank to get to their opponents.

Can you imagine, if they were to fall off the scaffold you'd think they would die, yet… that's the point of the match! It's crazy really, but right up the alley of the Road Warriors, that's for sure! And of course, the Animal and Hawk sent these pretty boy wannabes flying, and topped it off by taking that fat ass know-it-all jerk Jim Cornette and tossing him off too!

Match #195 – Wednesday, October 14th
Legion of Doom vs. Hart Foundation
[WWF Wrestlefest, March 1991]

Dream match! Wow, I can't believe this match actually happened! The Hart Foundation and Legion of Doom in their prime, wrestling for wrestling's sake. It's like a Ring of Honor match but before Ring of Honor!

Well, it should have been a clean match, and it was, but after a few minutes Bret and Jim started to cut a few corners with their tactics and I was a bit disappointed. But again, who can blame them? The LOD are pretty much unstoppable, as this great DVD collection has illustrated! Still, I lost a little bit of respect here for the infallible reputation of Bret ‘Hitman.'

In the end it was nice to see all the men shake hands like men and hold their wrists up in the air like they are all winners! Except of course, the Hart Foundation lost cleanly and easily at the hands of the Legion of Doom.

Match #196 – Thursday, October 15th
Legion of Doom vs. Hulk Hogan and Genichiro Tenryu
[WWF Tokyo, March 1991]

Dream match… again!

What a wild brawl! Hulk Hogan, usually a good, clean player, really resorted to some low down, street fighting to try and match tag team power with Hawk and Animal. The Legion of Doom are the most dominant tag team ever, so you gotta do what you gotta do, but that's pretty low for a big, straight shooter like the Hulkster to sink!

Even two of the most renowned solo stars in the history of wrestling couldn't defeat the most powerful team of all time! At times this match was just a pure fight, with fists, clotheslines and chair smashes that would have killed a pipsqueak like me! This one was Ov-aH when the Legion of Doom destroyed their interracial opponents on the floor and caused an historic count out victory that people in Japan would be talking about for decades!

Match #197 – Friday, October 16th
Legion of Doom vs. Money Inc.
[WWF SummerSlam '92, August 1992]

This match came from one of the greatest events of all time inside Wembley Arena in London. So amazing to hear 100,000 people chanting ‘L-O-D'! Or maybe it's just as amazing to hear one guy doing it alone in his room.

What a burn on Irwin R. Schyster, he's got no power in the UK but he still dresses just like a government tax agent! What a dork!

Match #198 – Saturday, October 17th
WWF Tag Team Titles Match: Legion of Doom vs. Godwinns
[WWF RAW, October 1997]

I don't blame Hawk and Animal for putting their careers on the line against these big, dirty, stupid farmers in order to get a WWF Tag Team Titles shot. Although Henry and Phineas are pretty big, how could they possibly match power with Legion!

The Godwinns don't even wear shirts, just overalls, like they're shoveling dirt or working a combine, so ridiculous. The Legion of Doom have scary face paint, futuristic trunks and spiked shoulders pads, now that's intimidating! No wonder they were so successful in their career… a storied career that went on way past this match up, let me tell you!

Here's a grEat Link to a fantastic Podcast from 411mania Music Zone spacEman and Seoulite Jesse Coy: Starship Exile

Speaking of great, what a great week I've been having! My nurse got sick… poor old lady, very kind, even though I have no idea what she's saying! Thankfully, her granddaughter has been coming over to fill in for her! She speaks English and she's super hot too! Check her out:

Holy fuck!
