Match A Day 11.11.09: Week 30 - ROH 7th Anniversary Show
Posted by Jake Chambers on 11.11.2009
An anniversary is a special time in our lives: a time to be with the one you love, a time to celebrate all of your accomplishments, and in ROH it’s a time to watch some of the best wrestling matches of the year!
Previously on Match A Day:
-Jake Chambers swore off watching Pro-Wrestling in regular continuity following the continual letdown of television and pay-per-view, finally culminating at the super lame Wrestlemania 25.
-taking a break from reading websites, backstage gossip, and taping and live results, Jake decided to only watch ONE match a day of old matches and international wrestling, while following the American continuity on delay, buying DVDs and borrowing tapes a few months in advance, inspired by the way in which he usually followed Ring of Honor.
-then "Jake" (not his real name) had a breakdown and now he's not as much of as smart ass as he used to be! Me, I'm his girlfriend Katie (you'll know it's me talking when you see this beautiful red font) and I have to take care of him 24/7 now, and just to keep him happy I let him watch one match a day and write out his rambling, moronic thoughts, which I then copy edit into something decent… You're welcome :P
-I recently left the Seoul, Korea bedside of Jake for a few weeks to visit some friends in Sydney, Australia. Jake has been fully capable of banging out his part of the column, and I have done my part editing it online but I'm wanted to let him do most of the work because I didn't really want to work while I was enjoying Oz!
-I wasn't worried about Jake's while I was gone becuz I thought I had an old old Korean nurse taking care of him… but it turns out her beautiful young granddaughter has taken over the job…
-bitch!
… I've got to get back to Seoul before she stimulates him back to his old self!
And now MAD Week 30 begins...
[All Matches are from ROH 7th Anniversary Show, March 2009]
Match #199 – Sunday, October 18th
Adam Pearce vs. Bobby Dempsey
Revenge time! Bobby Dempsey continues his metreolic rise to the top by completing a Sweet ‘n Sour Challenge and taking out (in a matter of seconds mind you) a handpicked opponent by nemesis Larry Sweeney.
Speaking of blasts from the past, what happened to Adam Pearce? This guy totally disappeared off the face of the country! Good to see him back again though… good that he got his tush kicked that is… Boo-Yah Bobby!
(the 1st thing I need to do is book a flight out of Sydney, but that's like super difficult, I already had a return ticket but I changed the date once already to stay here longer, so the airline isn't happy about me wanting to change again… I had to pretend that someone was dying in Seoul. Can't leave today, that's 4 sure, have a meeting at the travel agent tomorrow… damn these Aussies are slow! >_<)
Match #200 – Monday, October 19th
Jerry Lynn vs. Mike Quakenbush
Gentlemen grapplers! That's the only way describe these two guys in the kind of match that makes me love ROH: a finely contested, athletic contest.
Mike Quakenbush has access to more holds in his arsenal than any wrestler I've ever seen before, and he pulled out a few unique ones here that I thought for sure were going to win him this one, but once he found himself in the groin clutching Cradle Piledriver, I'm afraid that Quack's night was Ov-aH!
(still no movement on the flight, certainly they won't give me a direct flight from Sydney to Seoul, but I need 2 get there ASAP! BTW, none of my phone calls to Jeff in Seoul are being picked up! What is going on over there??)
Match #201 – Tuesday, October 20th
Ultimate Endurance, Revolution Rules Match: Austin Aries, Jimmy Jacobs & Brodie Lee vs. Tyler Black, Delirious & Necro Butcher
Confusion! I'm a patient guy but the rules in this one were hard to figure out! And I'm still trying to wrap my head ahead why the fans of ROH took to Tyler Black over Austin Aries?
Sure, Austin in cockier now than ever before, but he was kind of pushed to the edge when fans cheered for Tyler Black over him. Even in this one, when Tyler Black tried to turn the tables and use Jimmy Jacobs' own spike as a weapon, I saw the real Tyler: a villain not a hero.
(no sleep today, MY endurance is being tested here, not these shitty wrestlers… I've probably called Jeff's phone like 1,000 X and he still doesn't answer! I'm going back to the travel agent tomorrow… basically I'm willing to blow the dude at this point for any kind of flight out of this awful city! ^^)
Match #202 – Wednesday, October 21st
Bryan Danielson & ?? vs. Bison Smith & ??
What a waste of money! I can't believe that Prince Nana wasted the money he got from the Obama economic stimulus package to bring in Jimmy Rave as Bison Smith's mystery partner! Why not just wipe your butt with that money like toilet paper, considering that's what everyone thinks of when they see Jimmy Rave wrestle… that guy sucks!
-All teose amazing ROH photos are from awesome photographer Scott Finkelstein and his incredible website, so check it out!
Thank goodness Bam Bam Colt Cabana made his ROH return as Bryan's mystery partner! Colt is amazing! I was so happy to see his big happy smile and his fancy inorthodox offense back where it belongs!
(the travel agent told me 2 just go2the airport n try 2 fly standby… but good lord, it costs like $80 2 take a taxi to the airport from here, so it btr work! I called 1 of my friends back in Seoul and tried 2 get them 2 see w@ was going on over @ Jeff's apartment! What are he and that trampy nurse up to??)
Match #203 – Thursday, October 22nd
D-Lo Brown vs. Jay Briscoe
Big Deal-O! D-Lo Brown in now in ROH! At first I thought, great news! And then to see him matched up with one of my favorites, Jay Briscoe, I was even more pumped!
But then I saw D-Lo start to cheat, and my impressions were shattered. What is the deal, D-Lo? I know Jay Briscoe is a tough opponent, but you've got 40 pounds on the guy, do you really think you need to kick him in the crotch and pull his tights to get the victory? Is that what you consider ‘honor'? Well, not in my opinion buddy! I just pulled out my support for D-Lo, and doubled up my man-up-ing of Jay Briscoe!
(no flyt out yday, so I slept n the Departures area of the Kingsford airport n now it looks like I got another chance 2 get on a plane flying st& by… bt w/ like 3 stopovers! No word bac from my friend in Seoul yet either!)
Match #204 – Friday, October 23rd
ROH Tag Team Titles, No Disqualification Match: Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. American Wolves
Molten Mayhem! I don't know how those dirty American Wolves got Kevin and El to agree to a match with no rules against the masters of cheating and debauchery!
Of course, even after Kevin Steen made Davey Richards tap out with a Sharpshooter, the American Wolves still back-attacked their victorious foes and brutalized them using chairs like battle axes and tables like land mines! Truly a heinous display of sportsmanship from two wrestlers who do not belong in a Ring made for Honor!
(got approved 4 a seat on sum shitty Vietnam Airlines flyt, where I'll hav2 stay overnite n Ho Chi Min City b4 flying out to Seoul! Not sure f I should take it or w8 for a btr option 0_o)
Match #205 – Saturday, October 24th
ROH Title Match: Nigel McGuiness vs. KENTA
I almost felt bad for Nigel… almost! He's such a jerk that it's hard to care when you see him in intense pain, as he did coming into this one with both his pectoral muscles snapped! The look of agony on his face felt a little bit like justice for all the problems he's caused people like Bryan Danielson, Kevin Steen and Tyler Black over the past few months!
KENTA is probably easily the most amazingest wrestler of all time! Who could deny it? He is just so intense, athletic, hard-hitting, and Japanese! You can't go wrong!
The final ten minutes of this match, after the two men just barely rolled into the ring at the count of 19, were blistering! They were challenging each other with moves and striking that was so striking that I was moved!
So many counters during the ending sequence that I was so shocked when Nigel, who looked thoroughly beaten and injured in his arms, ended up with the advantage over KENTA with an arm wrenching London Dungeon that led to the tap-out victory!
Speaking of surprises, this morning there was a knock on the door. My nurse wasn't around, so I got up (I've been feeling so much more mobile these days, perfect movement in all of my limbs again and everything!)
The knocking was very persistent, thudding and pounding harder every second I didn't open the door. Actually, I think the person on the other side was kicking the door!
I asked who it was, but there was no answer, just more and more violent knocking!
So finally, I just squeezed my eyes closed and opened the door!
When I peeled back my lids, I was shocked to see, standing in my doorway…
