411Mania’s Squared Circle News Report 11.14.09
Welcome back inside the Squared Circle! How is everyone doing this week? I’m doing excellent right now seeing as tonight we have a free UFC card on Spike TV (which happens to feature my all-time favorite fighter….Randy “THE NATURAL” Couture!) as well as Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto on PPV! Talk about a great night of fights. I just love it when there is too much television to watch!
Speaking of television, I have been watching A LOT of it lately thanks to the Netflix feature on Xbox360. I finished seasons 1 & 2 of 30 Rock (GREAT show!) and just finished season 1 of The Office (another GREAT show, I can’t believe I just started watching these shows). Add that to my weekly dose of Heroes, Ultimate Fighter, Family Guy, Cleveland Show, “The Ruins”, and NFL and NBA games and I may as well quit my job and become a full-time TV viewer (I wish…).
In some great news, the Portland Trail Blazers are looking good so far sitting at 6-3 (their best start since 99-00) and Greg Oden has been playing like an animal. It’s great to see Oden finally getting his wings and once Andre Miller and Brandon Roy start clicking, it could be a deep playoff run for the Blazers. As for the Kansas City Chiefs, I must admit that I was happy to see the team release Larry Johnson. Johnson may still have a few good years left in him, but it just wasn’t working out in Kansas City. Plus, as a Chiefs fan….I didn’t want to see the douche break Priest Holmes record as all-time Chiefs rushing leader. PRIEST HOLMES WAS THE MAN~!

TNA to go Head-To-Head with RAW on Monday night in January?
Is this a smart move by TNA or the worst move ever?…..
Deja vu. It’s the feeling you get when you see something that you feel you have already seen before. It happens in the world of professional wrestling a lot, and it could be happening again. Apparently, now that TNA has signed their “big dog” in Hulk Hogan, they feel like they are on the right track to perhaps one day challenge the WWE for position as the #1 wrestling federation in the World. You see, TNA President Dixie Carter and company could be getting a little bit cocky now that they have signed a guy who is widely regarded as the greatest pro wrestler of all-time. There was another company that did the same thing about 15 years ago. They were called “WCW” and once they were able to sign Hogan, they decided to go LIVE on Monday night against the WWE’s RAW and eventually ended up becoming the #1 wrestling promotion in the United States. Can TNA do the impossible and pull off the same feat?
The answer is simply…..no. TNA is already heading down the wrong avenue as it pertains to Hogan’s debut with the company. While nothing is currently set in stone, there is a rumor going around that Hogan’s TNA debut could come on a special Monday night edition of “Impact” that would air directly against RAW. I believe this would be a horrible move for TNA. If you want to gain any sort of publicity for bringing Hogan in, why would you want to challenge RAW’s audience to decide what to watch? Pro wrestling is nowhere near as popular as it was back in 1996-2000. It was a different time then and pro wrestling was widely mainstream and was even considered “cool”. Now a days, the majority of those people are tuning into MMA and frankly don’t give two shits about Hulk Hogan or TNA or the WWE.
The WWE has it’s core set of fans that are considered “hardcore”. If you started watching the WWE thanks to the “Attitude era” and currently enjoy the product, then you are most definitely a “hardcore fan” seeing as the WWE is nowhere near as good now as it was back then. Are you really going to not tune into Monday Night RAW and instead choose to watch TNA and watch a 60 year old Hulk Hogan basically spoil a TV show? I’m telling you folks, Hogan is not going to save TNA or TNA’s TV show. He’s widely regarded as a joke now as well as having a few screws loose upstairs. As a matter of fact, it wouldn’t shock me to see Hogan try and “take over” TNA along with Eric Bischoff and Kevin Nash. WHY THE HELL NOT? Apparently we keep trying to relive the past in pro wrestling, so why not just have those three geezers try and take the company over?
OK, perhaps I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Perhaps Hogan’s debut with the company is a good sign and does manage to bring in some new viewers. The only way I see this happening is if TNA decides to not compete with RAW and stay on Thursday nights. WWE fans who are unaware of TNA may be channel surfing that night and see Hogan’s old nasty mug on the TV screen and decide to tune in and…..BOOM, you got a new fan! Instead, if you decide to go up against the WWE on Monday, you are praying that WWE fans will be interested enough in what Hogan is doing to tune into your program. I’m sorry, but Hogan is nowhere near as important now as he was in 1985-2005. It just wouldn’t work and it makes no sense for TNA to even attempt a stupid stunt like this.
Then again, there is a rumor going around that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be guest hosting RAW in January (YESSSSS!!!) and if TNA does actually decide to air a special “Impact” on Monday night featuring the debut of Hulk Hogan….what better way to counter than by having “The Rock” return to RAW? WHICH ONE WOULD YOU DECIDE TO WATCH?????
If you said “Hogan”, do me a favor and stab yourself in the neck with a very dull pencil…….

Dean Douglas
First of all, I’m not going to lie to you. I’m a HUGE fan of Shane Douglas and I actually thought that the “Dean Douglas” character was a good idea. How could a wrestler who’s a teacher who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else NOT get over? To his credit, the character actually DID sort of get over. I mean, hell…the man had a IC title run! The only problem was, Shane Douglas can sort of be a douche bag and he ended up pissing off the “Kliq” and that was basically his swan song with the WWE.
It’s a real shame too. Shane Douglas was at the peak of his career during his run in ECW as “The Franchise”. He was the #1 heel in the company and could cut a MEAN profanity laced promo. I really wish we could have seen Dean Douglas survive in the WWE, but I suppose it’s just one of a MILLION things I wish I could have seen happen in the WWE…….
Dean Douglas is about to teach Razor Ramon a lesson or two, or is he?……
Random News Bits:
– Hulk Hogan recently made an appearance on the Bubba The Love Sponge Show (does he appear anywhere else?) and mentioned that while he will likely never actually wrestle for TNA (YAY!), he will be running the company and plans on making some big changes. Ya, like putting the company out of business!

– Hogan also mentioned that he’s trying to bring Steve Austin and Randy Savage into TNA. Hogan MUST be smoking crack people. I mean, Austin would never go to TNA seeing as he’s currently under contract with the WWE and besides that, he has no interest in being connected with pro wrestling at the time anyway. And while I would love to see Savage in TNA, he burned his bridges pretty good in his last run with the company by walking out. Besides that, doesn’t Savage hate Hogan now or was I just dreaming that “Macho Man” made a crappy rap album that featured a lot of Hogan bashing?
– TNA is reportedly talking with Shannon Moore about a possible return to the company. This will be Moore’s 3,439 attempt to get over with pro wrestling fans. Good luck~!

Not a bad card by any means. The Survivor Series is always one of the PPV’s I buy every year (along with WrestleMania and Royal Rumble….and that’s the extent of my WWE PPV purchases for the year) so I’m jazzed. Why not include just ONE more Survivor Series style match with nothing but mid card guys? Those are always fun to watch.
– RAW will FINALLY get a new opening as well as a new theme song starting on November 16! The song will be called “Burn it to the Ground” and is sung by Nickelback. I don’t really care who sings the damn song, just get the one they currently have on the show OFF THE AIR FOR GOOD! As a matter of fact, they should just bring back one of the classic RAW themes. There use to be some really good ones back in the day, like perhaps “Across The Nation”?…….
– The WWE has reached an agreement with THQ that would allow the company the video game license rights through 2014. While I have yet to play the new version of “Smackdown vs. RAW”, I usually tend to enjoy these games. Now, THQ just needs to hunt down those bastards from AKI and make our dreams come true by making a new updated version of “No Mercy”.
– Here’s an update on the WWE Twitter ban! Apparently the company has asked the wrestlers to not use the social networking site to talk about their personal lives and instead use it to promote the company. Ummmm, this is the stupidest thing ever. It’s basically the WWE trying to control every aspect of their wrestlers lives. It’s called a “SOCIAL NETWORKING” website. One of the coolest things about Twitter is the fact that you can connect with celebrities on it. If you don’t allow the wrestlers to post personal stuff on Twitter then what’s the point of following them? I personally wouldn’t even be following guys like “The Miz” if it weren’t for his awesome arguments with Chris Jericho. WORST.IDEA.EVER.VINCE.
– The current names being mentioned for next year’s Hall of Fame inductions include Jake “The Snake” Roberts, King Kong Bundy, Ted DiBiase, and Lawrence Taylor. I’m all for this happening. The combination of a drunken Lawrence Taylor and Jake Roberts could make for some great candid moments during the ceremony.

Survivor Series was always one of my favorite PPV’s when I was a kid. I LOVED the team based matches where the teams actually had names like “Rowdy’s Roddies”. I was extremely bummed when the WWE decided to drop that format and start featuring singles matches, but have no fear! Leading up to this year’s Survivor Series, I will be doing plenty of top 10 based Survivor Series lists!
