The Piledriver Report 11.18.09: Possible WrestleMania XXVI Under Card and Thought on TNA’s Turning Point
Posted by Ronny Sarnecky on 11.18.2009
Last week, The Piledriver Report examined the two World title matches at the Survivor Series, and investigated how they could play out into the possible WrestleMania main events. This week, it’s time to look at what possible matches could be on WrestleMania’s undercard based on what could happen at the Survivor Series. Plus, we take a look back at something I never thought I would watch again, order a TNA pay per view.
Last week, I discussed where the main event scene could be headed after the Survivor Series and leading into next year's WrestleMania. This week, I look at a couple of possible undercard matches that could be headed to the big show.
THETEDDIBIASETURN
The WWE will be releasing the movie "The Marine II" on DVD this December. According to the rumor mill, the WWE is interested in turning Ted DiBiase Jr. into a babyface. Personally, I think that would be the wrong move. Right now, DiBiase isn't "over" enough with the crowd to the level where the fans are begging for DiBiase to split from the Legacy group, and fight on the side of good. The main motive for this rumored turn is that the WWE believes they would sell more DVDs if Ted Junior were a face. This is ridiculous. The WWE would actually sell more DVD if the movie is, ready for a shocking concept, GOOD!!! Imagine that, people would be a movie because it's good rather then if the guy plays the role of a face or heel in a wrestling federation.
Despite the weird logic the WWE is rumored to be using in a possible Ted DiBiase face turn, let's assume the rumors are true, and he will turn into a babyface. When should the WWE pull the trigger between now and the DVD release? The Survivor Series would be the perfect time. Well, as perfect as an angle that hasn't been given even a hint that it is going to happen. Anyways, the story could go something like this. In the Survivor Series match-up featuring a team led by Kofi Kingston against Randy Orton, Kingston could eliminate Ted DiBiase from the match leaving Randy Orton alone to face Kingston, and whoever is left from his team. DiBiase, still ticked off from being eliminated, takes a swing at Kingston, but nails Orton instead. Kingston then covers Orton for the pin to end the match.
The next night on RAW, a infuriated Randy Orton confronts Ted DiBiase, Jr. regarding his screw up, and threatens to kick him out of Legacy. DiBiase, Jr. decides that he is sick of the way Orton treats him, punches the "viper," and voluntarily leaves the group. This leaves Cody Rhodes stuck in the middle. Cody decides to stand by Orton. This will allow the WWE to run a Rhodes vs. DiBiase feud from December until February, when the focus will change to a DiBiase-Orton WrestleMania program. That's the way the WWE could go if they are gung ho about turning Ted DiBiase, Jr. into a babyface. However, as I've already said, I wouldn't turn him until he gets a lot more momentum under his belt.
PUNKGETSREY'D?
In a recent interview, CM Punk had stated that he would love to fight Rey Mysterio, Jr. at WrestleMania XXVI. I like that idea, and believe that the two should lock horns. Unfortunately, with Rey Mysterio, Jr. just starting up a new feud against Batista, I can't see a Punk/Mysterio feud beginning at the Survivor Series. However, it wouldn't hurt for the WWE to start planting the seeds for an eventual Punk/Mysterio program. A backstage vignette could easily accomplish this where one of them interrupts the other's interview segment, and the two mix words a bit. Nothing to big, but enough to raise an eyebrow.
Every so often, the WWE could have the two in a scene where there is some tension raised. However, the focus would remain on Rey vs. Batista, and Punk vs. whomever he is currently feuding with over the winter. Finally, at the Royal Rumble, Rey will eliminate Punk from the battle royal. Punk will attack Rey, and the two will brawl into the back. It's a simple formula that has worked many times in the past. Think Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho at the Rumble before WrestleMania XIX, or Shawn vs. Kurt Angle at the Rumble prior to Mania 21.
From here, Rey can make it a habit of cheating Punk out of wins on SmackDown! To try Punk's ire even more, Rey could pin Punk in the SmackDown! Elimination Chamber match at the formerly titled "No Way Out" pay per view.
WRESTLEMANIAXXVI'sCARD
Thus far, the WrestleMania XXVI card would play out as Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels for the WWE World Title. The Undertaker against Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship. Randy Orton vs. Ted DiBiase, Jr, and Rey Mysterio, Jr. against CM Punk on the undercard. I still haven't entered John Cena or the Big Show in a match yet. I'm not sure whom either would be fighting at Mania. Let's hope it's not against each other. Then, there's the Money in the Bank match. This match is usually set up a few weeks before WrestleMania, so there is no reason for the Survivor Series to be used to build up the match.
For the Money in the Bank match, I would have these eight wrestlers fighting for a shot at the briefcase; John Morrison, Kofi Kingston, Dolph Zigler, The Miz, Shelton Benjamin, Evan Bourne, Jack Swagger, and R-Truth. Each have the ability to put on a really good match, and Morrison, and Zigler could easily be pushed into the World title scene with a good eight-month push.
TURNINGPOINT
Now that the main matches for WrestleMania are booked, there is another topic I would like to bring up. That being TNA, or more specifically, the Turning Point pay per view. I was extremely undecided on whether I should order TNA's latest offering. After all, you have UFC's Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin 2 and the WWE's Survivor Series coming up this weekend.
AJ/DANIELS/JOE
The last time I decided to give a TNA pay per view a chance, I was bored to death watching Sting face Mick Foley for the TNA World title. I vowed never to order one of their shows again. That plan went off without a hitch until this past Sunday night. TNA had to present a three-way TNA World title match featuring Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, and AJ Styles. This match was billed as a "rematch of the greatest match in TNA history, four years in the making."
That match held in September 2005 was the reason I bought my very first TNA pay per view. The original match was unbelievable. In a word, "WOW!!!" I even voted this match in the Wrestling Observer newsletter's Match of the Year category in 2005. That match had heavy competition from Samoa Joe vs. Kenta Kobashi in Ring of Honor. Fast forward to 2009. I never thought that the Joe/Daniels/Styles rematch would ever come close to the original. Man, was I wrong. While the 2005 version was better, the 2009 rematch was pretty damn good. The match was awesome. If you haven't ordered the pay per view out of fear of the suck-ittude that is TNA, I would advise you to order the replay. This one match is worth the $34.95 price tag.
KURT,THENEWGUY,ANDTHERESTOFTHESHOW
On top of the triple threat match, you got Nigel McGuinness making his TNA pay per view debut against Kurt Angle. As great as the TNA title match was, this match was just as good. What's more, it was very different when compared to any other match on the show. This match reminded me of a UFC style contest, as both men battled in a match where both were throwing submission hold after submission hold at one another.
The rest of the card was pretty good too. The opening contest between Amazing Red and Homicide was a great way to kick off the card. The three way tag team match between the World Elite, Beer Money, and the Motor City Machine Guns was really good until they over booked the thing by having Kevin Nash interfere on the World Elite's behalf, and would only say that "Hulk knows," and "I may tell you on Thursday night." Both women's matches were even tolerable. The Rhino & Team 3-D vs. Hernandez & Matt Morgan & Pope D'Angelo Dinero match was good, but confused me. Now, I must admit that I haven't been the most avid TNA viewer recently. However, last time I checked Rhino and Team 3-D were feuding with each other. Did I miss something? The worst night was Bobby Lashley vs. Scott Steiner. In a typical TNA move, they had their first ever match take place in a gimmick "Falls Count Anywhere" match. The match wasn't that good. Plus, the way they had Lashley job cleanly makes one think he may be on his way out of TNA and into StrikeForce. After the show was over, I was really glad that I took the risk, and ordered the pay per view. If you haven't done so yet, I suggest you order the replay. You'll be glad that you did.
my idea of dibiase's turn would be portic justice for randy. rko is contractually unable to challenge cena for the wwe title. he cant make sure dibiase faces cena. then wins due to interference from rko and rhodes.
then just like in 2004. on raw, legacy celebrates. randy expects to be handed the title or at least named no.1 contender. neither happens. randy can cost teddy the title at the rumble and set up their match at wm26.

John Cena vs. The Undertaker at Wrestlemania. Bank on it.
Posted By: Jay (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 12:30 PM
Ya know what bothers me? The way some people treat "The Streak." Apparently, we are possibly headed towards a Taker/Cena WM mainevent. Now, Im not a Cena sympathizer or lover, but I TRULY think this will be the tourch passing.
Think about it... does the streak REALLY actually mean anything? Why are other streaks in sports important (ie DiMaggio, Ripken, etc)? Because their opponents are ACTIVELY TRYING to stop the streaks. Its a sport. Wrestling is athletic, but its scripted. A streak would be arbitrary and if anything, a nod to the wrestler for being over/loyal/a money maker.
Ok, so REALLY think about this... Taker's streak is in reality what? At first it just WAS (as in not planned, just happenstance according to booking at the time). Then it was a statistical note that helped promoting WM if anything. THEN, and only then, after YEARS did it actually become a gimmick of sorts. IT became what WM matches were about.
Now, marks and the general public NEVER want to see the streak broken beacuse its a huge record, a long streak, IT PROVES TAKER'S DOMINANCE. But again, WHAT is it really?
It's a nod to Mark and his overness/loyalty. The streak stands ONLY as a gimmick/payment for what Taker does backstage. Remember (and its easy to forget) that Mark is truly the backbone of the backstage. HHH/HBK MAY run things (MAY)... but the day to day policing over the locker room boils down to Taker. JBL I know use to play a part too... but Taker has been the "judge" for a long time. Why? I'd imagine several reasons... time spent there, status, mark "overness", etc... and let's not forget the fact that though oft injured, has anyone EVER really seen Taker get in trouble outside the ring ala Angle, RVD, wellness suspensions. No... he's clean. But Taker isn't going to be around for much longer. Thats a HUGE tourch to be passed...
.. to Cena. Think about all of it. All of it. It makes too much sense. The streak is a gimmick and the man DOES NOT have to end his career undefeated. How MUCH more over is it going to make Orton/Kofi/ANYONE if they really end the streak? Bookers will get two maybe three series of angles before it gets old. Does Jericho's championship feat REALLY matter anymore? And that's bigger in the big scheme then ending Taker's streak.
So yeah... Cena. It's going to happen. He's "the" face of the company now. And he wants to ALWAYS be. He might flirt with Hollywood, but has stated himself that he LOVES wrestling. He's not going anywhere. And by ALL accounts he's professional in all matters backstage. HHH is on the fast track to booking... but he'll be booking Cena for a LONG time.
Think about it... makes sense doesn't it?

Sorry but I will wait for the Hulkster before I dish out any money.
Hogan vs A.J. (only if hulk wins)
Zodiac vs Samoa Joe
Angle vs Brain Knobbs
Hacksaw/valentine vs beer money
Yes I think i'll wait for the dream matches in TNA...SWEET!

I disagree with you about Dibiase not being "over" enough to turn face. If you remember Raw from a weeks back when Dibiase had to face Orton, the crowd was firmly behind Dibiase and wanted to see him finally turn on Randy. It didn't happen that night, but I think that when it does eventually happen, the fans will be solidly behind Ted.
From what I've seen the past few weeks and through some guessing, here is what I predict to be the WM26 card:
1) HHH vs. HBK - WWE Title
2) Undertaker vs. Cena
3) Batista vs. Rey
(with news of Rey needing time off, I can see Batista "injuring" Rey this Sunday and then Rey comes back at the Royal Rumble and costs Batista a World Championship match which sets up the build to 'Mania)
4) Jericho vs. Edge - World Heavyweight Championship
(Jericho wins the title at some point before WM, Edge returns at the Rumble and wins the Rumble match, the rest writes itself)
5) CM Punk vs. Christian
(I think that tag match last night was just a preview of more to come, with the culmination being at WM)
6) Orton vs. Dibiase
7) MITB: Kofi vs. MVP vs. Ziggler vs. Morrison vs. Shelton vs. Bourne vs. R-Truth vs. Sheamus
8) Swagger vs. Miz - U.S. Title
(I have a feeling that they're back-and-forth bickering is eventually going to turn serious and one of them will turn face in the process, leading to this match)
9) Big Show vs. Kane
(Gotta have the obligatory HOSS match for Vince to jack-off to in the back)
10) Divas Battle Royale
That's just my guess. I'm sure that the 'E will go in a completely different direction by the time WM rolls around, but at this time I think this is the most likely card that we'll get. Not a bad looking card, actually.

This is what I like for the WM26 card.
WWE WRESTLEMANIA 26
The Streak Is On The Line!
THE UNDERTAKER vs. JOHN CENA
Seems obvious from what happened last night. I could also see Taker being WHC and Cena winning the Rumble, choosing to face Taker to have "the ultimate showdown" for the fans.
WWE Championship
SHAWN MICHAELS (Champion) vs. TRIPLE H
Yup. Not sure what the details will be here, but this match happens.
World Heavyweight Championship - Steel Cage Match
BATISTA (Champion) vs. REY MYSTERIO
Batista sends Rey out on a stretcher this Sunday, this is Rey's return. Like I said earlier, the title could swap over to the Taker-Cena match.
WWE Unified Tag Team Championship
JERISHOW (Champions) vs. EDGE & CHRISTIAN
Oh yeah. This should be awesome!
MONEY IN THE BANK 2010
CODY RHODES, CM PUNK, DOLPH ZIGGLER, EVAN BOURNE, JACK SWAGGER, JOHN MORRISON, KOFI KINGSTON, THE MIZ, R-TRUTH, SHELTON BENJAMIN
I put 10 dudes in this year, mostly because they all belong in. Also it's '10 and maybe WWE will play off of that.
Singles Match
TED DIBIASE vs. RANDY ORTON
I like your thinking on this.
ECW Championship
WILLIAM REGAL (Champion) vs. THE HURRICANE
I guess. You can switch Hurricane with Yoshi and then put Helms in the preshow battle royal.
Belfast Brawl - RAW vs. SmackDown
SHEAMUS vs. FINLAY
This makes sense, yes?
WWE Divas Championship - Six Pack
MELINA (Champion) vs. MARYSE vs. ALICIA FOX vs. GAIL KIM vs. KELLY KELLY vs. EVE
WWE Women's Championship
MICHELLE MCCOOL (Champion) vs. MICKIE JAMES vs. BETH PHOENIX vs. MARIA vs. NATALYA vs. LAYLA
Gotta get the ladies on the show.
Preshow Battle Royal
CARLITO, CHAVO GUERRERO, CHRIS MASTERS, DAVID HART SMITH, DREW MCINTYRE, ERIC ESCOBAR, GOLDUST, JTG, KANE, MARK HENRY, MATT HARDY, MVP, MIKE KNOX, PAUL BURCHILL, PRIMO, SANTINO MARELLA, SHAD, TYSON KIDD, YOSHI TATSU, ZACK RYDER
Yep. Preshow.

What do you mean there hasn't been a hint that Dibiase will turn heel?
He has had run-ins with Orton repeatedly for months. The pinned Orton in the middle of the ring during a triple threat match against Cena. The next week, he had the hell beaten out of him by Orton. Weeks before that, Ted Sr. came out and booked a match between Ted and Randy for the title in which Ted came scary close to winning before getting hit with an RKO. They have been planting this seed for months and I fully expect it to come through. Probably not at Survivor Series, but sometime in the next month and a half.
They could even use it to catapult Kofi. Instead of having Kofi ultimately lose to Orton in a one-on-one bout, their feud can go on a hiatus on the way to Wrestlemania with Orton's attention diverted to Ted. Kofi can go and win the Money in the Bank and after Orton goes over on Ted and Dibiase gets shipped to Smackdown so he can build himself up on his own, Orton and Kofi lock up again as Randy wants the briefcase.

These are pretty much a lock imo
Cena v Taker, HBK V HHH, Edge v Jericho.
I would also like to see Punk v Christian or Rey.
Posted By: jbardo (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 03:21 PM
yeah, i can see dibiase and randy doing the evolution angle of 2004. this time ted is randy and randy is HHH.

"This match reminded me of a UFC style contest."
Certain submissions maybe, but I've seen enough MMA matches to know that this match was nothing like MMA. It never could have happened in the UFC. The obviously worked suplexes, nearfalls, top rope moves, the way the match flowed, selling, etc.
The comparison to UFC is a little silly IMO. Anyone who watches both back to back can tell that they don't look much alike at all.
By the way, pro wrestling matches with lots of holds have been done before many times over. This is not unique to MMA.

Although 3 matches do seem to be pencilled in by a lot of people, WWE really need to make some new headliners at WM 26. I'm intrigued by a potential Batista/Morrison angle which could be for the WHC...Morrison can't fight Ziggler every week can he? Sorry, I probably shouldn't have said that...
Posted By: Guest#1251 (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 06:33 PM
Most of these cards look good to me, but the WWE title being involved in HBK v HHH is unnecessary in the my opinion. Either leave it on Cena to get him on a good roll building up to Taker, or find a way to get it back on Orton and have him challenged by Rumble winner Morrison to freshen things up.
Maybe Morrison isn't quite ready for heavyweight title yet. An alternative in my mind is a unification triple threat for the US/IC/ECW titles. No one has ever held three single titles, and there's already enough going on with Miz and Morrison to keep a story in it, added the ECW champ will freshen it come the time. And a nice spin on the Cena v Taker situation would be to make it career ending, that would put a huge question over whether the streak is going to be broken.
Posted By: Guest#3762 (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 07:15 PM
World Heavyweight Championship: Chris Jericho (c) vs. Edge
WWE Championship: Shawn Michaels (c) vs. Triple H
The Undertaker vs. John Cena
Randy Orton vs. Ted Dibiase
Guest Ref: Cody Rhodes
Beth Phoenix vs. Trish Stratus
Rey Mysterio vs. Batista
MVP vs. The Miz vs. Jack Swagger vs. Evan Bourne vs. John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Kofi Kingston
WWE Tag Team Championship: CM Punk and The Big Show (c) vs. Christian and Kofi Kingston
Posted By: Joe Rice (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 09:09 PM
I'm really against Dibiase v Orton, as Dibiase simply isn't ready for it. I'd have Dibiase's turn start at the Rumble by eliminating Cody. At the Elimination Chamber, have Cody, Ted and Orton in the chamber, and probably have Orton take the title off of Cena here. Then stick Dibiase and Cody in the MITB. Do a full on one on one Dibiase v Orton feud over the summer. It's not yet big enough for Mania.
Posted By: Guest#3025 (Guest) on November 18, 2009 at 10:53 PM
Make CM PUNK vs HBK at WM26 PLEASE!
IT WOULD ROCK!
Posted By: Guest#8504 (Guest) on November 19, 2009 at 12:27 AM
World Heavyweight Championship: The Undertaker (c) vs. John Cena
WWE Championship: Triple H (c) vs. HBK
Tag Team Championship: Jerishow (c) vs. Edge and Christian
Randy Orton vs. Ted Dibiase
Rey Mysterio vs. Batista
Divas Tag: Beth Phoenix/Michell McCool vs. Melina/Kelly Kelly
MITB: MVP vs. CM Punk vs. Jack Swagger vs. Kane vs. John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz vs. Kofi Kingston
ECW Title Match: Shelton Benjamin defends the title in a tri-branded battle royal (to get everyone on the card)

The crowd doesn't want Ted DiBiase to turn yet?
No offense man, but do you not remember how hot the crowd was for Teddy to beat the piss out of Randy when they had their match not too long ago on RAW, before he eventually put his head down and let Randy give him the ole RKO?
Posted By: Jason King (Guest) on November 19, 2009 at 06:23 AM
I seem to be in the minority here but i would prefer not to see Triple H vs HBK at wm26. It is too predictable. Plus doesnt this seem a bit simalar to what they have going with Batista and Rey Mysterio? Two old friends fall out over a title...
Posted By: dee cee gee (Guest) on November 19, 2009 at 06:50 AM
I know it's easy to fantasy book a card, but most of the predictions on here have a very good chance of happening and would be great to see, even months before the show, I'm already looking forward to Wrestlemania, I just have a feeling it will be an epic show after this years disappointment, barring unforseen injuries/suspensions this is how I see the card shaping up:
John Cena v Undertaker - Biggest main event in years.
Triple H v Shawn Michaels - Not sure if there will be a heel turn, a simple babyface v babyface battle for respect between friends deal might be the way to go.
Edge & Christian v JeriShow - It's touch and go whether Edge will even be healthy in time, he probably won't be in condition to have a 1 on 1 match with Jericho that would live up to expectations, so I think this is the way to go and would give Christian a huge rub and hopefully begin his move away from ECW.
WWE Title - Randy Orton v Ted DiBiase - Maybe throw in Cody for a triple threat.
World Title - CM Punk v John Morrison - The 2 World title matches might not be the biggest of draws here, but I'm thinking the triple main event of Cena-Taker, HHH-HBK & E&C-JeriShow will sell the show and deliver a huge buyrate so they can afford to spotlight less established guys in the title matches.
Batista v Rey Mysterio - Batista kills Rey at Survivor Series and Rey takes time off since his knees are playing up again and returns in time for the return match at WM.
MITB - Kofi is a sure fire winner this year.
Posted By: Guest#5437 (Guest) on November 19, 2009 at 09:49 AM
your card sucks dude
heres mine
Undertaker vs John Cena (dream match)
Triple-H vs Shawn Michaels (dream match)
Randy Orton vs Kofi vs Ted Dibaese for the WWE Tile
MVP & Shaq or another celebrity vs Jericho and Big Show
Batista vs Rey Mysterio (or Edge if he can return in time and its sounds like Mysterio may miss Mania this year too (World Heavyweight Title Match)
John Morrison vs The Miz (Champ vs Champ
Christian vs CM Punk (ECW Title Match)
Money in the Bank - Jack Swagger vs Kane vs Cody Rhodes vs Mark Henry vs Shelton Benjamin vs Matt Hardy vs Evan Bourne
some pointless diva match
9 matches in all, 5 of the matches can be considered "main events"
Posted By: Lukas (Guest) on November 20, 2009 at 02:40 AM
WWE title: Cena v Taker
World title: Morrison v Orton
HBK v Triple H
Tag titles: E&C v JeriShow
MITB: Kofi v Ted v Cody v Bourne v McIntyre v Ziggler v Miz v Swagger
CM Punk v Rey Mysterio
R-Truth/MVP/Henry v Batista/Sheamus/Knox

Lukas your WWE title match sucks, I wouldn't put that on superstars.
Posted By: Guest#4567 (Guest) on November 20, 2009 at 09:57 PM
why can't Kofi/Orton/Dibaese be a title match? its not a huge world title match but Orton is huge, Kofi is getting a big push and Dibaese is in line for a big push. At least its a fresh idea that puts the younger guys in meaningful wrestlemania spots.
You have Kofi and Orton feuding right now, let that go on till the Elimination Chamber, Orton wins the title in the chamber, Kofi gets revenge and a world title shot at mania. And then to freshen it up Dibaese is thrown in the mix still a member of Legacy but starting to go tired of Orton. Then at mania Orton somehow screws Dibaese and gets the win. I'd rather have the WWE use the next 4 months to build that match and then have Legacy split after Mania.
I'd rather see a title match with new wrestlers that lasts star power than Triple-H, Cena, and Taker all in title matches. Cena vs Taker sells all by itself as does Triple-H vs Michaels. Why use both world titles in those matches when you can have two more main event matches and you can give a rub to a new set of talent and give them a shot at getting their wrestlemania moments.

I think the big mistake you and a few others are making is that I don't think Dibiase is over, but Orton is hated enough that you can stick anyone against him and they'll want him to take him out. Look at Kofi. In a month's time he went from a solid, but nothing special midcarder, to a possible main eventer. Granted, Kofi is doing a great job himself, but I wonder what they got planned for him after his feud with Orton/Legacy is done.
Plus, if you're gonna use history, remember when Dusty Rhodes got RKO'd when he hosted RAW and the crowd wanted Cody to tear Randy apart? Didn't happen.
Plus, what would happen with Dibiase after his feud with Orton was done? Remember how hot the crowd was for Virgil after he turned on Dibiase years ago? Then he became just another jobber. Same goes with Hercules when Dibiase bought him from Heenan.
