411Mania's Squared Circle News Report 11.21.09
Posted by Dustin James on 11.21.2009
411's Dustin James is back to discuss this weekend's Survivor Series show, Shane McMahon meeting with the UFC, Hulk Hogan's "fight" with Ric Flair, the top 10 Survivor Series shows of all-time and much much more!
Welcome back inside the Squared Circle! How is everyone doing this week? I'm doing pretty good right now considering the weather here in Oregon has sucked these past few weeks. Usually I don't mind rain all that much, but when you have to work in the stuff all day and it gets your clothing all wet, it's enough to make a guy go psycho. Oh well, at least my job pays extremely well, and that's what really counts right?
So, who's looking forward to this action packed weekend? We not only have the Survivor Series (LOTS more on that later) on Sunday, but we also have UFC 106 "Ortiz vs. Griffin 2" tonight! WOOT~! It's been a long time since we have seen Ortiz in the Octagon and it will be interesting to see if he can defeat Griffin again. In my opinion, Griffin is a much better fighter now than he was back then. When you add up the fact that their last fight was a split decision and the fact that Ortiz hasn't fought in awhile, you have to favor Forrest Griffin going into this fight. I'm a genius at picking MMA fights people.....so listen to me!
Before all the UFC and WWE goodness starts, I get the privilege of watching the Oregon Ducks battle the Arizona Wildcats for a potential spot in the Rose Bowl. Oregon is way more talented than Arizona, however the Ducks tend to struggle in Tucson. This will definitely be an interesting game and one us Ducks fans are worried about indeed!
Should be a GREAT weekend......
Anyways.......
LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!
Biggest News Of The Week:
It's Survivor Series Weekend.......
This is one WWE PPV I'm actually looking forward too......
It's Survivor Series weekend once again. The WWE's "Thanksgiving Tradition" is back and who isn't excited for this weekend? Survivor Series is one of the top 4 PPV's and it's usually a show that can give us some good memories (the debut of The Undertaker) as well as some bad memories (Montreal Screwjob). One thing is for sure, we are in for a heck of a night this Sunday! I'll probably be watching the show with a hangover thanks to UFC 106, so hopefully the WWE will be able to cheer me up a little. Either way, here's the full card for this weekend as well as my predictions on who's going to win (which I'll probably miss every single one....)!
Traditional Survivor Series Match:
Team Miz: The Miz, Jack Swagger, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, and Dolph Ziggler
vs.
Team Morrison: John Morrison, Matt Hardy, Finlay, Shelton Benjamin, and Evan Bourne
Prediction: First off all, I'd like to remind everyone how much I LOVE traditional Survivor Series matches. Now with that out of the way, I'm going with TEAM MIZ for the win! Just for fun, let's pick the sole survivor as Sheamus. Those gingers are just MEAN~!
Traditional Survivor Series Match:
Team McCool: Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, Layla, Alicia Fox, and Jillian Hall
vs.
Team Mickie: Mickie James, Gail Kim, Melina, Kelly Kelly, and Eve Torres
Prediction: My prediction is that this match is going to suck monkey balls. Either way, I'm picking TEAM MICKIE for the win here. Hopefully the sole survivors will be Gail Kim and Melina as they both rule the school.
Traditional Survivor Series Match:
Team Orton: Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase, Cody Rhodes, CM Punk, and William Regal
vs.
Team Kofi: Kofi Kingston, Christian, R-Truth, Mark Henry, and MVP
Prediction: This might be the easiest "traditional" Survivor Series match to pick. I'll take TEAM ORTON with the sole survivor being none other than Randy Orton himself. Hopefully Orton's entrance won't put me to sleep so I'll be able to catch this match (seriously dude....speed it up a little).
Rey Mysterio
vs.
Batista
Prediction: Poor Rey Mysterio. The guy finally gets a program that he's interested in and then he has to go and get injured. The "good" news is that Mysterio has decided to put off surgery due to his interest in this storyline. However, at the Survivor Series I fully expect Batista to win and then go BAT NUTS CRAZY all over Rey in order to keep the storyline going.
World Title Match:
The Undertaker
vs.
Chris Jericho
vs.
The Big Show
Prediction: The one thing we know going into this match is that either The Undertaker or Chris Jericho is winning this bad boy. But, seeing as The Undertaker is almost as unstoppable at the Survivor Series as he is at WrestleMania, I expect to see him walk out of here with his title in hand and then go on to feud with Chris Jericho until the Royal Rumble.
WWE Title Match:
John Cena
vs.
HHH
vs.
Shawn Michaels
Prediction: This is a pretty tough match to pick. I guess I'll just flip a coin and see what it decides. Ohhhhh look at that! It landed on John Cena! It's always good when the guy who's nicknamed "The Champ" is holding the belt anyway......
And here's something all the old school WWE fans will remember.......
Ahhh.....the good old days! Enjoy the show on Sunday!
Remember This Guy???
Due to all the Survivor Series goodness (and the fact that it took me FOREVER to do the top 10 list this week) I decided to put "Remember This Guy" on hiatus this week. The feature will return next week with something totally awful, I'm sure of it.
Random News Bits:
- In TNA's quest to sign anyone who was over in the 1990's, apparently Sid Vicious is being recruited by Hulk Hogan and company now. Sid had been mentioning that he was looking for a return to the WWE, however since that didn't happen he's now reportedly headed to TNA. Congratulations TNA, you just gave me another reason to not watch your television program!
- WCW veteran Konnan has announced that he will release an autobiography soon. I don't really read a lot of books, but I would definitely read this one. Konnan has had a lot of backstage problems with people and I'm very interested in what he has to say. Ehhh, what am I saying? I honestly just want to see why he didn't stick it out as "Max Moon" in the WWE. HE WAS FROM THE FUTURE PEOPLE~!......
- The TNA video game rights have been purchased by Southpeak Interactive. They will reportedly be releasing a game called Crossing the Line, which is basically just a version of the previously released game, only this one is coming out only for the Nintendo DS and the PSP. I have owned a PSP for 3 years now and haven't touched it in 2 1/2 years. Did they ever release that Gran Turismo game for the PSP anyway?
- Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair got into a "fight" at a press conference in Sydney, Australia on Wednesday. The funny thing about the whole ordeal was the fact that some media outlets actually thought it was a legitimate fight! I mean, hell....Flair even threw his little forehead shots at rapid speed at Hogan for crying out loud people! I guess you can't really blame the media seeing as people from Hogan's camp even told TMZ that it was real. Hogan, when are you going to get the picture man? No one cares about you anymore no matter what kind of publicity stunt you try and pull. Perhaps if you made a sex tape with Brooke then people would start caring again. Hey, don't look at me! Sex tapes sell people! Plus I'm sure there's an audience for people who want to see some dad-on-daughter action.......
- TNA has signed Pope D'Angelo Dinero to a new multi-year contract. This is actually an excellent decision by TNA as I have always been a fan of Dinero's. Yes, even when he was managing that Sylvester Terkay dude in the WWE.
- TNA has released William Mueller (Trevor Murdoch). Mueller never actually signed a contract with TNA so it's not shocking to see this go down. It's all good though because he is currently running a bar called "T Murdoch's Bar & Grill" in Eldon, Missouri. First thing I'm going to do when I'm done writing this column? Book myself a trip to Eldon, Missouri.....
- Shane McMahon and Carl DeMarco (former president of WWE Canada) met with the UFC this past week. While neither side is commenting on why the two sides met, it sure has been fun for us fans to speculate! Can you imagine Shane McMahon joining the UFC? The UFC is the WWE's #1 competition in the PPV market (besides the big boxing match every 6 months) and it would be the ultimate "f you" to Vinnie Mac if Shane joined forces with the enemy. On the other hand, is it really wise for the UFC to associate themselves with people involved with pro wrestling? The answer is.....yes! McMahon and DeMarco have contacts all over the world and would only help the UFC expand globally.
- The WWE and USA Network have agreed on a new four-year deal. The contract will expire in 2014 and yes....Randy Orton will still be feuding with John Cena over the WWE title.
- Verne "Mini Me" Troyer will be the guest host of RAW on November 30. Expect something "hilarious" to happen between him and Hornswoggle. Also, Mark Cuban will be hosting the RAW from Dallas on December 7. This should actually be good. If I remember correctly, Cuban has taken an RKO before and actually looked decent doing so. We may get to see some Cuban in-ring action and that would be something worth watching!
- WWE has apparently loosened their strings on their "Twitter ban". They reportedly told the talent that they can use their Twitter accounts all they want, but if anything they say leads to bad press for the company then there WILL BE DISCIPLINARY ACTION TAKEN! So basically, if someone like Jimmy Wang Yang posts that he's at a bar with Hurricane Helms and they are drunk as hell and about to go street racing....you can expect someone to be future endeavored.
- The plan (as of now) is to build up a John Cena vs. Undertaker main event for WrestleMania. That means we can start the "Cena is going to be the man to end the streak" talk RIGHT NOW! In all seriousness, this isn't a bad match by any means....especially if you throw in a stipulation or two.
- There's a rumor going around that the WWE has re-hired Sean Mooney. This would be tremendous news for someone like me (so that means 10 of you are also excited) as Mooney was one of THE voices of the WWE in the late-80's and early 90's. While Mooney sucked at calling matches, he was decent at doing the backstage "WWF News" type broadcasts. Who wouldn't love to see those things return?
Survivor Series was always one of my favorite PPV's when I was a kid. I LOVED the team based matches where the teams actually had names like "Rowdy's Roddies". I was extremely bummed when the WWE decided to drop that format and start featuring singles matches, but have no fear! Leading up to this year's Survivor Series, I will be doing plenty of top 10 based Survivor Series lists! I'm sure I'll be bringing up plenty of nostalgia for everyone to bathe in so sit back and enjoy!.....
This list is in a particular order......
This list took A LOT of time for me to make. I really had to go back to the old memory bank and try and remember which PPV I liked, which match I liked, etc, etc, etc. In the end, I decided to make this a wrestling based list instead of like a Survivor Series "memories" list. Basically, if a PPV had 4-5 kick ass matches then it's probably going to be ranked a little higher than one that only had 2 good matches. It's REALLY simple folks. However, in the end it's all my opinion so your opinion doesn't really matter anyway.....

I approve of your list if only because Survivor Series '96 features the best non-gimmick match of the 90s (Hart/Austin, in case somebody somewhere thought it included HBK)

no love for 05 ss?

Terrible Surivor Series Preview.

No love for this guy named Paul Roma? I heard he was really brilliant and always performed GREAT at Survivor Series. Even Ric Flair would want to be him!
Posted By: Paul Roma (Guest) on November 21, 2009 at 08:57 AM
Anyone notice that in both this list and the Wrestlemania list, the Undertaker is consistently in the worst matches of the card?
Posted By: Smitty (Guest) on November 21, 2009 at 05:32 PM
Great top ten. Just one comment, in the Survivor Series 1995 the wild card match which was HBK, Ahmed Johnson, British Bulldog and Sid vs. Owen Hart Yokozuna Dean Douglas and Razor Ramon should be in the best matches. That match rules!!!

I love how youre condemning TNA, and being serious about it being a reason why you wont watch, when its something that was reported on a less than reputable site, while PWInsider and Meltzer havent said a word about it.
Its like hearing "Dude, I hear TNA is gonna rape a small child on TV next week!" and you taking it seriously, and stating it as a reason why you wont watch.
Pretty pathetic.

You predict John Cena will win on the toss of a coin? Isn't it friggin obvious he will win.. this match is only existing to build and tease tension between the DX members and that is it.
Also Team KOFI will win as Orton will get the big singles win against Kofi at the next PPV and Team MORRISON will win as Morrison lost to the Miz at Bragging rights and this is basically a way of JoMo getting his heat back on his old tag partner.
Sur Series 96' is my fave one. There was some shit but when you add up hot unpredictable MSG crowd, Rockys debut, one of the best pure matches ever that put Austin on the main event radar permanently and Sids greatest match (and moment) ever... without a doubt this is the best Survivor Series ever.

- Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton vs. HHH, Batista, Edge, and Snitsky
and MAVEN!!
Posted By: Guest#0280 (Guest) on November 21, 2009 at 01:31 PM
That old school Survivor Series poster is awesome. I wish the event still featured nothing but traditional matches.
Mooney's back? I wonder if TNA is talking to Mean Gene.
Posted By: Guest#8740 (Guest) on November 21, 2009 at 02:06 PM
Hart/Austin is indeed a five star match but for my money, Shawn getting a four star match out of Sid is the bigger acheivement.
Posted By: Guest#2368 (Guest) on November 21, 2009 at 02:07 PM
Harley Race's wrestling school is also based in Eldon, MO.
Posted By: Guest#8783 (Guest) on November 21, 2009 at 08:00 PM
I have a soft spot for the SurSer where they had the "Ultimate Survivor Match" at the end with all the winners.
Plus Ultimate Warrior's team with the Legion of Doom (aka The Road Warriors) and Kerry Von Erich (aka The Modern Dan Warrior) just calling themselves "The Warriors"... classic.

Survivor series 96 is my favorite too

taker/cena for WM? I thought Taker and Cena's faced off before.. I may be wrong.. anywho.. is there anyone Above the Glass Ceiling that Taker hasn't faced yet? and is there anyone in WWE they even care to put in the ring with Taker other than those above the ceiling? Judging by this news.. and by the main events at survivor series.. the WWe is too chickenshit at this juncture to push new talent. come on.. they need to try!
Posted By: sdmcc (Guest) on November 22, 2009 at 04:59 AM
That video package for the Winner Take All match is 2nd only to Rock/Austin Mania X-Seven as the best ever imo.
Also well done for saying Test/Edge was a good match. I really enjoyed that one.

Does anyone think that this Shane McMahon/UFC thing will be similar to the Russo/WCW thing. You know where McMahon sent Russo to kill WCW and TNA. What a business man!

GO BEAVS!!! Beat the Ducks!!!!

hart vs austin was the greatest survivor series match of all time. im surprised there are so many mentions before 2000, aince these columns never seem to go back further than that. good lsit
