    Raw 11.23.09

  • The Right:

THE GOVERNOR OF REVOLUTION SHAKES THINGS UP: Our Super-Duper Extra-Special three-hour Thanksgiving Monday Night Raw opened up with guest host Jesse “The Governor” Ventura coming down to ringside. Well, actually not; in truth it was Randy Orton who came down to the ring instead. The Tattoo Killer was in no mood for giving any thanks after he lost at Survivor Series. Orton got on the mic and trashed the “normal routine” of guest host first, interruption second. Orton wanted a WWE Heavyweight Title shot and appealed to Venture’s rule-breaking ways in order to get it. Orton had the crowd eating out of his hands, predictably, and by the time he was done the crowd popped nicely for Jesse’s entrance—not that they wouldn’t have anyway, but having Orton out there as a heel for him to interact with certainly didn’t hurt. Jesse played to the crowd a bit and in his snakeskin leather jacket and then addressed Randy. He said he liked Orton’s style and that he reminded Jesse of himself, but that being the governor of revolution he was going to bring something new, which wasn’t a title shot for Orton. I’d say “make your own joke here,” but it wasn’t an unintentional shoot; that was exactly what Jesse meant. We got our Breakthrough Battle Royal announced, where someone who had never been a World Champion would battle their way through into the Battle Royal for a shot. Well, you have to give the ‘E credit for that (although I’ll talk more about the result later). Jesse was on top of things and sounded just like he’d never left, making him a striking difference from several of the guest hosts in a very positive manner. They were setting this show up as something truly special from the get-go, booked some good set-ups for matches and basically this delivered in every way you could have asked for an opening segment.

KOFI KINGSTON vs. DOLPH ZIGGLER: The first of our Breakthrough Battle Royal qualifier matches featured the man with the mega-push, Kofi Kingston, facing off against the choke artist himself Dolph Ziggler. We got a recap of what Kofi had done to Orton last week on Raw to build him up, then Dolph came down to the ring. I think we all knew who was going over here, and I didn’t mind the result as Kofi’s got the momentum and it doesn’t hurt Dolph to lose to the guy who just pinned Orton and Punk in one night. They actually put together a pretty fine match for the four minutes or so they got. Dolph had control for the first portion of the match before the Jamaican from Ghana came back and never looked back. I would have liked to see a longer match of course, but what they did worked fine and it ended with what we knew was a foregone conclusion (barring Orton interference) anyway. Not much to complain about here.

CM PUNK vs. JOHN CENA: This first-ever match has Punk coming out first so he could deliver a promo and get the crowd good and pissed…likely so they wouldn’t boo Cena the way they did at the opening of the show during Jesse’s promo. Punk told us what he was thankful for which (shock shock) was being straight-edge, and then trashed Thanksgiving for being a gluttonous holiday. Well, he switched it up from druggie to fat, so that’s something right? To his credit Punk got the crowd from mostly booing Cena to mostly cheering him. They took just a wee bit in getting this started but that worked, with both of them feeling out the other until things picked up. This match was pretty back-and forth, more so than more cynical people might expect. They went back and forth some and the sequence where they went from Attitude Adjuster countered into the G2S countered into the STF was very nicely done. I was happy with the back-and-forth and I felt that it ended solidly, putting Cena over cleanly while far from burying Punk. I’m pretty sure anyone would go down to a top-rope Attitude Adjuster, and the fact that Punk countered out of the finisher twice before then was impressive. Good stuff all-around.

EVAN BOURNE vs. PRIMO RANDY ORTON: After a backstage segment where Orton asked to get in the battle royal and Jesse told him he wasn’t going to break the rules, we had Evan Bourne taking on Primo. But oh no, that apparently wasn’t happening; Orton came out and beat the tar out of poor Primo. Somehow, I doubt that’s going to lead to a main event push for the littler Colon the way it did for Kofi. Jesse showed up on the ‘Tron and said that because he liked Orton’s style, he was giving Orton his chance tonight. That led to a nice, short squash match in which Evan got a few moments to shine before falling to the RKO. You know what, I liked this. The match was a formality but Bourne had a couple moments where he fought back, and it’s a nice way to get Orton and Kofi into the same ring without having them go one-on-one. I can dig that, even if there wasn’t much to the match.

“WHAT I’M THANKFUL FOR…”: So, we had a few of these throughout the night, and I decided to group them all together just because. The first was Miz, who gave a nice, short little promo reminding us that he was the only Raw guy to win at Bragging Rights, the guy who’s team won at Survivor Series and (according to him) the most dominant US champion of all time. Next up was Teddy Long, who started his thankfulness before Vickie spoke up and talked about how everyone should be thankful that she has power and influence. Vickie then made Teddy pass the potatoes, and we had a tease of the potatoes being shoved in Vickie’s face before Eric made the save. It ended off with Gail and Alicia turning “I’m thankful” into a public service announcement by Santino about craving breasts—of turkey. He did his vaguely chauvinist thing, and got a bunch of pies in his face as a result (plus one to Vickie). I actually enjoyed these well enough. They were nice and short, and worked for the time-filler portions without overdoing it. Can’t disagree with that.

BREAKTHROUGH BATTLE ROYAL: Earlier in the show, Vince showed up in Jesse’s office and said that he wasn’t going to take on Jesse in a match. Thank Christ. But Jesse didn’t have any desire to do that; he’d called Vince into his office so that they could promote Jesse’s new show. Oh, and also so that Jesse could tell Vince that they were going to take a seat behind the announcer’s booth. You know what, that’s pretty freaking awesome. The nostalgia trip is nice enough, but there’s the added bonus that it pushes Cole and Lawler out of the booth for a match. I love it.

Once the main event had come, the Body came out in a studded leather jacket. He got on the mic and talked for a bit about turning back the hands of time, then introduced Vince McMahon with his bow-tie and announcer’s suit…and “Obsession” as his theme music, which I don’t really get but okay. The image of Vince dance-strutting down to the ring was great and it was fun to see and hear these two sitting behind the booth. They seem to be a lot better than I remember, for the record. Individual broadcast entrances were only for Kofi and Orton, to no real surprise. As a battle royale goes, this wasn’t bad at all. Legacy attacked Kofi right off the bad before everyone squared off against each other. Orton slipped to the outside and watches as the battle continued, coming in only to beat on Kofi some. The eliminations were stalled for a few before coming in quick succession. The Kofi/Orton fighting was pretty good, and I will admit that Sheamus winning came out of nowhere. I don’t think that anyone honestly thinks Sheamus will be WWE Heavyweight Champion come TLC, and that hurts the heat on that match somewhat. I’m okay with a foregone conclusion match like this when it builds someone up; my issue comes in the fact that the Royal Rumble usually involves throwaway World Title matches also and two months in a row is a bit much there. However if they build it right this can do Sheamus a lot of good…as long as he’s not pushed down our throats too badly. And dear gods, please no Sheamus/Lawler match next week. That’s the last thing we need.

Finally, we had the contract signing capped off the show. Jesse and Sheamus were already in the ring with table and contract, and the Body played to the crowd briefly before he addressed the situation and then gave the guy his due props. The crowd booed Sheamus some, which was nice to see, and then Cena came down to the ring to a distinctly lukewarm reaction. What a weird crowd…you can love or hate Cena, but it’s rare you hear a quiet reaction from the crowd when the Champ comes down. Sheamus demanded that Cena stand up to face him, and Cena talked shit to Sheamus, basically about how he’s a bully and Cena’s going to stop him. Now, this is the Cena I love. He didn’t alternate between goofy and angry, he was just straight-out intense and it sold better than any promo he’s given since the one with Edge so many months ago. Also, letting Sheamus lay Cena out was a nice step, and Jesse’s heel turn was lovely. I like this turn of events and this is a good start to their feud, even if I’m damn sure that Sheamus is going to go down come TLC.

  • puRgatoRy:

SHEAMUS vs. FINLAY: This was our second Breakthrough Battle Royal qualifier, and featured Irish vs. Irish as Sheamus and Finlay did battle. At Survivor Series Sheamus beat Finlay with one move; this was only a few more. Sure, Finlay got himself a little token offense and shoved the Celtic Warrior over the announce booth, but otherwise this was a squash match by Sheamus. Don’t get me wrong, I’m fine with a good squash match, but I didn’t think this one did Sheamus a lot of favors. It wasn’t as flat-out domination, it was just short. If they wanted to put Sheamus over huge—which would have been wise, considering the later events of the night—they should have had Sheamus just completely destroy Finlay. Finlay will never lose credibility with the fans and Sheamus would have looked like a million bucks instead of a guy who just looked good. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the in-ring work here and Sheamus was the right guy to go over here, I guess I would have just preferred more.

D-GENERATION X vs. THE HART DYNASTY: DX came down to the ring first to the usual great pop; sadly, the Harts had very little crowd reaction. The crowd seems to be pretty hit or miss with them; sometimes they’re good with the heat-getting and sometimes the crowd doesn’t seem to care. Kidd and Smith took control of Michaels early on and the crowd was thoroughly behind Shawn as he played the face-in-peril. Kidd and Smith got to showcase themselves a bit with Shawn before ‘H got the hot tag and then it was pretty well over. The H-Man ran through both of them and not even a brief comeback could stop DX. This wasn’t really a burial, but there wasn’t a whole lot to the match either. They just seemed to be going through the motions and didn’t seem to really work as well as it should have.

After the match Chris Jericho came out and announced that DX vs. Show & Jericho was going to be the match at TLC. He tried to talk and ‘H cut him off to rag on Show eating his way through the Hershey Chocolate Factory. Jericho wanted to put an end to the jokes, and Michaels spoke up to say that the match was going to be a TLC match. Much like the match, this seemed to be Shawn, Hunter and Jericho just going through the motions and none of them seemed particularly inspired here. Nothing in this segment was bad, it just seemed to be completely average from a group of men who are able to give us something more than that.

WHO’S NEXT FOR BIG DAVE?: In the final hour, Rey Rey’s music played to the shock of Vintage Cole and the King. They didn’t think the little guy was showing up…and lo and behold, he didn’t. It was the Manimal, who came down into the ring to let us know that Rey Rey was in a hospital bed and had no one to blame but himself. Batista reminded us that Rey had cost him the World Heavyweight Title, and was dumb enough not to walk away when he had the chance. Big Dave put everyone on notice and said that no one from SmackDown had better win the Battle Royal or he’d kill them. That brought down Kane, who I guess is fully face now. The Big Red Machine got in Dave’s face and called his bluff, sending the Manimal slowly out of the ring. This sets up a match between them, presumably, and as a result we’re going to see Batista vs. Taker at TLC. Okay, I can accept that; I don’t think it’ll be a great match considering the Dead Man’s limitations these days, but whatever works. As a segment, this didn’t inspire me much. Dave’s been doing good work as a heel, and this was okay, but much like the DX/Harts/Jericho thing I wanted to see more.

CRYME TYME vs. PRICELESS: Well, with Orton having wormed his way into the Battle Royal, I think we had a good idea how this was going to turn out. Cryme Tyme got a moderate reaction at best for their Raw return, and Priceless also didn’t get much. Honestly, it seemed like a kinda weird crowd in how they were reacting; it was very hot and cold throughout the show. What I liked about this match is that DiBiase and Rhodes seem to have really polished themselves as a tag team. They’ve gotten their shtick down very well, and since working with DX their cohesiveness as a team has been much improved. Cryme Tyme got a little bit of offense here but they went down as expected, sending the entirety of Legacy to the Battle Royal. This was a completely average match, totally middle of the road. I certainly didn’t dislike anything, but nothing was particularly impressive either.

  • The wRong:

CHAVO GUERRERO, CHIRS MASTERS & JACK SWAGGER vs. MVP, MIZARK & TRUTH: Anyone else think that Swagger saw the line-up and knew he was going to the showers before the end of the show just based on his partners? I kid, I kid. Actually I don’t, but it’s still kind of funny. So, I suppose this is officially proof that the ECW Title isn’t a World Title in the ‘E’s eyes, isn’t it? This match wasn’t bad per se, it was just shorter than any six-man match has a right to be and boring. It was some elementary ring work in the ring, capped with a pin by Truth to send the faces onto the Breakthrough Battle Royal. This was rushed, and in the end I just didn’t find anything particularly worthwhile. Even you guys who like the Masters titty dance didn’t get that, so this is an all around fail.

LAME JOKES, INC.: So backstage, we had ‘H staring at a visibly nervous HBK over the whole Superkick of Awesomeness the night before at Survivor Series. Now, despite the category this segment is resting in, I have to admit that this image right here is made of bad-assery:

They then played it off nicely, with ‘H admitting under duress that he planned to Pedigree Shawn right out of the gate. That was funny. Then we got a midget showing up to silently serve DX with notice that they were being sued. It’s too bad that Peter Dinklage wasn’t around to do a lawyer-type role here as he did in Find Me Guilty, but he probably had difficulties scheduling around his dignity. I know people find this whole Hornswaggle thing funny, but I’m not one of them. And I’m positive that this is going to lead to a far-too-long segment next week involving Little People’s Court. Whee.

  • The Ridiculous:

DID YOU KNOW?: Nope. And, as always, I don’t care.

MAYFLOWER MELEE MATCH: You know, when I was talking about this three-hour Raw with someone on Sunday night, I said that it was going to mean a bunch of things. I was actually wrong on most of them, but I have to say that I called this match, right down to who was going to be pilgrims and who was going to be Native Americans. I know, not a huge mystery to guess at, right? Anyway, we had what was quite possibly the strangest entrance music in history for the heels, sounding like folk music. I love folk music, but not for entrance themes. After a dull promo by Michelle about how stupid the pilgrim outfits were, we got the return of none other than the GOBBLEDY GOOKER! Now, I love me some Gobbledy for pure camp, but I have to admit I found reason to be worried here. Also, that wasn’t even close to the same costume. You’d think that they could have at least tried to remake the thing. Not surprisingly, the Indians were in much hotter outfits with more appropriate entrance music. Things were starting off poorly when the Gooker’s costume apparently kept him from seeing where the bell was, as he had to have it pointed out to him. Then you add in that the match had almost literally no time to it. What we had wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t enough to be good either. Finish off with Maryse returning to raw and nailing Melina with the Gooker head again and again, with shots that looked like they couldn’t hurt a piece of paper. She stripped off the Gooker outfit in a terminally long moment. Not even Maryse’s hotness could save this whole thing. Complete waste of time.

    The 411

You know what, this wasn’t a bad Raw at all. Typically, the three-hour shows are full of some sort of bullshit or another, a bunch of filler to make the show worth being as long as it is. We didn’t have a whole lot of that and outside of the Diva crap, this show was all in all a very decent show. I’m not at all sure what I think about Sheamus getting the super-push but it started off well and if they can make him look good in defeat then his stock will have instantly risen by association. I didn’t find this to be a perfect Raw, but it was quite enjoyable for a three-hour event.

    SHOW RATING: 8.0

    From fanboi13:
“But anyone who thinks that Bourne and Swagger have been feuding has been taking a few too many sips off the moonshine”.

You’re right on with this. Swagger and Bourne have been a serious of random matches with little rhyme or reason that have done little man any favors.

Exactly my point, fanboi. I don’t mind two guys facing up against each other multiple times, as long as it’s doing something for either of them. With the amount of wins that they’ve traded off now, they’re basically on the same footing…or would be if Bourne got an actual feud. It’s time for the ‘E to do something with these guys rather than put them against each other again and again.

    From Ox Harrison:
Is it just me or does Drew McIntyre’s facials when he talks make it seem like he is trying to take a massive shit?

I hadn’t thought about it before now. I’m sure I won’t be able to stop thinking about it at this point though. Thanks.

    From Guest#4288:
Jeremy you seem to rag on Punk and Jericho continually giving basically the same promo week in week out, however I think this is required – the reason is that not everyone watches Raw and SmackDown week in week out, I think these guys do need to keep cutting these same promos (and they do it in different ways) to get their point across to the more casual wrestling fans. Basically I do agree with what you’re saying but I think in the wrestling world repetitive things like this are required.

I understand that, certainly. This sort of goes back to the territory system, where shows would run the same angles in city after city due to a lack of television programming. I just don’t know if that applies to the current era and national TV programs. The ‘E (and TNA, for that matter) should be booking with a mind to get people tuning in every week. By having people do the same promos again and again, they’re encouraging people to think that they can skip an episode or two because they’re just going to hear the same old, same old or see the same old matches. It creates a situation where wrestling programming isn’t “Must See TV,” to use a cliché. I personally believe that’s the wrong mindset. Good point, though!

    From The Great Capt. Smooth:
I didn’t really mind the Punk/Truth bit, except for one thing that took me out of the show. While Punk’s promo was the same that we have seen, at least there were some props for him and the crowd to play off of. Also, I like how each guy is getting an upper hand on his rival. It makes it look like an actual feud. My problem was the “everyone makes their own decisions” line. When did Punk say that he made that decision for us? He just said that we were sick. Not only that, but it’s such a cliché line that comes off as preachy and annoying. Finally, it does essentially say that we live in a vacuum, that there is no outside influence at all. Actually, it sounds like something that Punk should say as a heel. He could be a cold and super judgmental douche bag. Honestly, they should have had Punk make fun of people who use those various products and be brutal about it and then have Truth come out to tell him off. Sorry to go on the rant, but those types of lines are used way too much in pop culture and it turns me off.

I completely understand. That’s one of the interesting phenomenons around Punk’s gimmick. The WWE is trying to promote clean living amongst its superstars to have a good, family-friendly image, yet they have one of their top heels in the company as someone who does that very thing. I don’t think Punk’s gimmick is bad–quite the opposite, I love it. But it does make it harder for faces to play off of. Jeff did it best by saying “I made my mistakes,” but even then his only other real comeback was “I’m an individual!” It makes him seem like an aimless rebel whose only excuse for being a substance abuser was that he “marches to his own drum.” They’re going to struggle with this for a little while, I think, until they catch a stride and now how to run with it properly. But for now, it works…just not perfectly.

    From Loki:
“The 411 Cassandra Award for predicting doom but not being heeded”

Awesome Greek mythology reference. All the intelligent ones use Greek Mythology references.

“It’s going to do Dolph some damage as he’s pretty much looking like Morrison’s bitch”

As good as Dolph is, he doesn’t have as much upside as Morrison, and Morrison needs protected after being constantly 1-Upped by the Miz.

Good point on Morrison and being protected; I hadn’t thought of that, but you do make a good point. I guess I would prefer that they not put two people who are on losing streak against each other. And thanks for the points on the Greek Mythology reference. I’ve been a mythology buff when I was in elementary school (you can imagine how popular that made me with the ladies), so I love being able to toss a reference out every now and then.

    From Jason King:
Michelle McCool is excellent to look at…but she shouldn’t open her mouth ever (unless it has something to do with me and a bedroom).

But seriously…not delivering promos is one thing, not everyone is good on the mic. I get that. But when you can’t even sing Old McDonald ON BEAT WITH THE MUSIC, you’re just awful.

But not as awful as that whole segment. I cried because I’ll never get that 2 mins of my life back.

Can’t disagree with anything you said here, Jason. You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

    From ZeroVX:
I’m convinced WWE is teasing us with the whole Mickie humiliation thing. They’re playing it up like she’s going to leave, but then they’ll swerve us and say she isn’t.

Of course, that doesn’t stop this whole angle from being a pile of bullshit.

I wouldn’t be shocked. I don’t buy into the “Mickie’s leaving” thing, I think this is just an angle they’re going through that she’s probably okay with. I think it’s retarded, but that doesn’t mean they’re being evil to Mickie and mocking her without her consent.

    ECW on SyFy 11.24.09

  • QUICK RESULTS:
Shelton Benjamin defeats Zack Ryder by pin [**1/2]
Vance Archer destroys another local talent [3/4*]
Yoshi Tatsu defeats William Regal via pin

  • The Right:

SHELTON DEFEATS RYDER, GETS A SHOT AT CHRISTIAN – On opening contest was yet another match with Ryder and Shelton. But the deal for Shelton is that a win for him, made him the #1 contender to Christian and the ECW Title. For me, this was a dead giveaway that Shelton would be winning here, but I tried to watch as if that wasn’t said. And the match was pretty good from what we saw, with Shelton showing why he should be held in better regard than he currently is. Shelton got the win and the chance at Christian, which immediately brought out the champ. And this is where it got even better. Christian’s promo was golden, as to quote Larry, because Christian gave a damn about being ECW Champion and he was sick and tired of the belt not being defended on Pay Per View since Summerslam. Yeah, it has been that long. Furthermore, Christian goes for the challenge of a ladder match with Shelton. I don’t know about most people, but I have to imagine that this could easily be the match of the night. Christian had it right when he said of the greatest ladder match moments (and I’ll count TLC matches) Shelton and Christian are in more of them than anyone else. Shelton accepts and I’m telling you right now that with the five matches or assumed matches so far, this will be a one match show because of ECW. Cena and Swagger I can not buy as a legit title match. DX and Jeri-Show will be hurt by The Big Show’s leg and the simple fact that he can’t climb a ladder for his life. Undertaker and Batista has train wreck written all over it. Kofi and Orton will be great, don’t get me wrong, but I have to imagine it will pale in comparison to this one.

  • puRgatoRy:

VANCE ARCHER SQUASH MATCH – So we had squash match number four for Vance Archer. And unlike the others, this one actually took some time. Not because Vance was dominant, though he was. But because he started looking methodical in his approach, dissecting his opponent. It added a new dimension to Vance Archer and I think they needed to do this soon, otherwise he was going to just be a bland people beater. Now, he just needs to face somebody who is not described as local jobber.

  • The wRong:

MATT HARDY ON THE ABRAHAM WASHINGTON SHOW – You would think that this would have been good, but hen again, what exactly was the purpose of Matt Hardy being there? Yes, he is a former ECW Champion, but he wasn’t involved in any feud on Smackdown, had no beef with anyone on ECW, and has done nothing but get killed by Batista since Jeff left. But still, he was on the show and Washington had his normal jokes like he was looking forward to interviewing Jeff Hardy. Yeah, I think Matt said it best, real original. But we get to the point of Mat’s visit and that was to hype up his appearance on Scare Tactics next week on SyFy. Now, I can understand hyping it up, but let’s be honest here. If you ever watched the show, you know that you get four prank scares, each about five minutes long. So you are looking at Matt Hardy getting tops four minutes of air time on SyFy next week and the hype for that appearance was longer than that! Not to mention, there was more bad jokes than laughs by Tony in this promo. Matt hardy said he feared nothing and Washington proved that he is fearful of everything seemingly. Overall, this was just a waste of time that could have gone into another match or maybe more time for the main event.

THE ROUNDTABLE HAS SOME ISSUES – So the main event for the evening saw Willian Regal take on Yoshi Tatsu yet again. The Roundtable was in toe and Yoshi was definitely on guard. The match was fast and furious to start and Yoshi gets near the twin towers of ECW. Kozlov shoves him off and his spins… into the roundhouse kick for the win?? In two minutes no less. I’m watching and saying to myself, “that’s it?” Like, I was expecting a restart or something, but no, that was the match. So Regal confronts his roundtable and blames them for the loss, not knowing who’s fault is was. Then I swear it turned into a father scolding two sons as Kozlov rated out Jackson, who did nothing wrong. Well, Big Zeke didn’t take to kindly to that and drilled down Kozlov to the mat. Regal then tried to play peacemaker and got drilled to the mat himself as well. So we have a Jackson face turn and I asked a few people I know about this. Their reaction summed up my thoughts… “Really? Why?” Yeah, no clue exactly why we are turning him face now and not say before the Roundtable started. But I’m sure we will have more next week.

  • The Ridiculous:

    NONE

    The 411

So opening twenty minutes are so was television goodness. The rest was really quite bad, in and out of the ring. The Jackson face turn makes no sense in hell, especially for a show that lost Buchill and Sheamus in the past month. At least we have Shelton and Christian to look forward to for the next few weeks.
