Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 12.14.2009
Sheamus and Drew McIntyre win their first WWE Gold, The Undertaker retains his, DX become Unified Tag Team Champions and more! Check out the latest edition of 411's Wrestler of the Week for all the details and for an updated look at the Year-End standings!
Welcome to Week 37, Year FIVE, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder
Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this
Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this
1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1
...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year at WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week
The Voting~! Robert S. Leighty Jr
1) Sheamus
In the blink of an eye he went from killing Jamie Noble to #1 contender to your New WWE Champion. I didn't think the WWE had it in them to pull the trigger, but damn! Easily Sheamus gets Wrestler of the Week as he put mark Cuban through a table (made PTI, Around the Horn, SportsNation, and SportsCenter for that one) and then beats Cena to claim his first WWE Title.
2) DX (HHH and Shawn Michaels): The Super Duo finally get a run as Tag Team Champs. In a pretty sweet match they dethrone JeriShow from their reign of awesomeness. I want to see where they go with this as a breakup has to be teased at some point for DX, right?
3) Drew McIntyre: Drew ends the reign of Morrison as IC Champ, and picks up his first title in the WWE. It seems the WWE is serious about pushing some new talent, and Drew is going to get a shot it seems.
4) Christian
5) The Undertaker
Aaron Hubbard
1) Sheamus
Shocks the world in an upset win over John Cena to become WWE Champion. We can argue about whether he deserves it or not, but well, he has it. Lucky kid.
2)Triple H & Shawn Michaels: Well, it's twelve years too late, but they win the Undisputed Tag Team Championships, dethroning the dominant JeriShow team in a wild TLC match.
3)Drew McIntyre: Relieves John Morrison of his Intercontinental Championship, establishing himself as a midcard force and giving John the chance to move up.
4)Christian
5)Randy Orton
Chad Nevett
1) Sheamus
From beating up jobbers to WWE Champion in a few short months... he laid out Cena on Monday and then did it again at TLC to become the new champ. All personal feelings aside, it's impressive and deserves the top spot this week.
2) DX (Shawn Michaels and Triple H): This duo is one of the most well-known tag teams and yet never held the belts until taking them from the incredibly dominant team of Chris Jericho and Big Show in a TLC match. You can't say they didn't earn 'em.
3) Drew McIntyre: He may have looked like a bit of a punk on Smackdown, but he brought it Intercontinental Champion John Morrison at TLC and walked away with the strap.
4) Christian
5) Batista
ARI
1) Sheamus
WWE can't ever use the "you get yourselves over" line in explaining to the lower card why they're not being pushed, because this Sheamus build has been all their doing...and well, they've done a damned great job of it. Sheamus, for his part, has looked tough and acted the part when called for. He didn't pin Cena, but he did dominate him on Monday and crashed him through a table to win the WWE Title. That and his running Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban through a table on Raw clinches this week for him.
2) Degeneration-X: Took out Chris Jericho and Big Show to win the WWE Unified Tag Team Championship.
3) Drew McIntrye: Defeated John Morrison for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, another young talent given a quick push to the top.
4) Christian
5) Randy Orton
THE Larry Csonka
1) Sheamus
Sheamus actually walked into TLC as the challenger and left as the champion. Everyone is a genius after the fact and says that they called it, but the fact is that not very many thought he had any kind of chance. But they pulled the trigger, they gave us a fresh face, which is what many wanted, and now it is up to the company to follow up and not get cold feet. Congrats to Sheamus.
2) HHH and HBK: DX finally wins the tag team titles to add to their legacy at a group/team. They not only neat Jeri-Show, who had a great run, but they did it in a good PPV main event as well.
3) Drew McIntyre: Won the IC Title at the TLC PPV, and then made sweet passionate love to Vince McMahon. Well, Vince was happy with him after the win, who knows what goes on at the hotel.
4) Christian
5) AJ Styles
Samuel Berman
1) Sheamus
Really?
2) Naruki Doi: Retained the Open the Dream Gate Championship over former title holder Magnitude Kishiwada.
3) Triple H & Shawn Michaels: Finally the cover models for WWE's tag team DVD set actually hold tag team gold together. I feel like those two things took place in the wrong order...
4) Christian
5) Drew McIntyre
Mathew Sforcina
1) Sheamus
So, the new WWE Champ is... The guy who beat John Cena for the title and thus YOUR WWE champ is... I... What... Ahem. WHY THE HELL DIDN'T THEY DO THIS LAST TIME WITH UMAGA? Oh yeah, the drugs.
2) DX: Thanks a lot guys. Really. Thanks.
3) Drew McIntyre: He's thanking his lucky stars that Sheamus won, less focus on HIS sudden inexplicable push.
4) Christian/Shelton Benjamin
5) Randy Orton
Michael Bauer
1) Degeneration X
While this is more of a footnote on their careers, this is a first for the most over team in WWE history.
2) Christian and Shelton Benjamin (tie): Tremendous build and an insane match to boot. Awesome work.
3) Drew McIntyre: I surely would have never seen him beating Morrison.
4) Naruki Doi
5) Mark Cuban
Ryan Byers
1) Sheamus
This is the first time in years that I can actually say that I'm happy to see somebody win the WWE Title as opposed to feeling that a title change will just lead to something that I've already seen before. I've been complaining for quite some time that the company needed to do something in order to freshen up its main event scene, and Sheamus appears to be the PERFECT guy to do it with. He's carried himself like a total professional in just about every regard despite being on WWE television for less than a year now, and, as a result, he legitimately feels like somebody who belongs in the main event at this early stage of his big league career. This is how the promotion should treat new stars, not keeping a guy under contract for years and using him as a midcarder, only to one week decide to flip a switch and turn him into a main event level performer. Bravo to Sheamus, and bravo to WWE for having the stones to get behind Sheamus.
2) Jun Kasai & Ryoji Ito: This week, for what I believe was the eighteenth consecutive year, Tokyo Sports announced its year-end awards for all things puroresu. To put things in perspective, this wold be the equivalent of an ESPN or the sports section of USA Today holding a set of pro wrestling awards. The winners in the match of the year category were Jun Kasai and Ryoji Ito for their bout against one another on November 20. What's particularly impressive about this accomplishment is that Kasai and Ito had this battle in Big Japan Wrestling, which is at most the fifth or sixth largest promotion in the country. It's definitely well behind the "big three" of New Japan, All Japan, and Pro Wrestling NOAH. To make an analogy again, this would be the rough equivalent of a national US media outlet having its own pro wrestling awards with a company like CHIKARA walking away with a top prize. Congrats to Ito and Kasai for putting on a performance so spectacular that they leapfrogged all of the big boys.
3) Drew McIntyre: Though he hasn't shot up the card quite as quickly as Sheamus, I still have to heartily endorse everything WWE has done with McIntyre. His Intercontinental Title win was absolutely the correct move, as the championship will probably help him significantly more than it helped John Morrison who, even though he is capable of putting on spectacular matches, has been a mid-card guy for so long that it's going to take a lengthy rebuilding period to actually elevate him.
4) Naruki Doi
5) Randy Orton
Jeremy Thomas
1) Sheamus
Our winner, and STILL WWE Heavyw--wait, what? Seriously? That was most people's reaction when the Celtic Warrior beat Cena for the Title. I'm glad they've elevated someone for sure, and Sheamus looks to be their new golden boy. There's little doubt that this is the new greatest moment in Sheamus's career, for obvious reasons, and big congratulations go out to Sheamus for being the man this week (and possibly the palest WWE Champion in history).
2) Drew McIntyre: I've been high on Drew since his debut, but that's cooled since we haven't seen much actual wrestling from him. That's changed in the past couple weeks thanks to his push to the IC belt. He put on a very decent match with Morrison and picked up his first piece of WWE gold in the process. Big ups to the guy.
3) D-Generation X: Shawn and 'H earn their first piece of gold as a tag team and send Chris Jericho back over exclusively to SmackDown with a really fun match. DX wins, fans of SmackDown win.
4) Christian
5) Randy Orton

Wow, not that much love for Shelton. I think Sheamus/DX/McIntyre are an obvious top 3 and I can understand breaking a tie, giving it to Christian over Shelton, but I can't consider what Taker/Batista/Orton/others did better than Shelton in a losing effort last night.

i'm happy for a DX win if A) Legacy dethrone them and B) the split up cos of the dethroning.

In before Michael Bauer gets completely obliterated by the commenters for not having Sheamus on his list at all.
Posted By: Pikamtisu (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 01:04 PM
Drew McIntyre is a complete joke. The future of wreslting looks crap if bums like him are future world champions.
Posted By: Peep#5731 (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 01:04 PM
I understand Christian won the match, but I think that Shelton Benjamin deserved more love on the voting than he got

BAAAAUUURRRRR!!!!!

Bauer - really? Did you really leave Sheamus off your list altogether? What were you thinking? I admit I might have placed DX or even McIntyre above him purely because I can't see his reign lasting too long, but to omit him entirely was somewhat questionable.
Posted By: Bimmy (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 01:09 PM
VINTAGE BERM...wait, what?
VINTAGE BAUER!!

I'm reminded of a 4 year old in K-Mart who runs around and yells and scream to get attention.
The best thing we can do is to ignore the lists of several individuals because I believe their lists are only attempts to get attention. The worst thing you can do to an attention whore is to ignore them.

No offense to Ito and Kasai (or to Byers), but they don't deserve points this week...way too much happened this week elsewhere to justify it, and being recognized by a media outlet outside your promotion would mean something if it translated into elevation IN your promotion (i.e., as was the case with Ryoji Sai in Z1 after spending some time on reality TV early this year). Ito has faded into the background since that match, and Kasai, despite winning that bout, hasn't been pushed that much since then.
Kudos to WWE for shocking the wrestling world, a two or three times over, last night.

I understand DX at #1 but no Sheamus for Bauer at all?
Posted By: Viper Fontaine (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 01:36 PM
Jesus, Bauer. What the fuck? You hate SHEAMUS that much that he doesn't even exist in your world?
Posted By: Ricky C. (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 01:41 PM
Mr. Bauer's comments from the Preview Roundtable infer that he's probably one mad columnist today:
"Michael Bauer: There is no fucking way in hell Sheamus is winning. End of story. I still don't buy him as credible and until the best person he has actually beaten in a ring is better than Finlay or Shelton Benjamin. Period."
Something tells me that ignoring the Sheamus title win was done out of spite and/or disgust, but to deny the fact that it's by far the most important development in wrestling of the whole week is ignorant.
Posted By: Nick M. (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 01:45 PM
LOL People whine and moan about WWE being too predictable and when the unpredictable happens they can't accept it either.
Posted By: Jake Fury (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 01:47 PM
From Bauer's piece on how he votes:
"Judges based on: It is so hard to order it. It really depends. For me, one week a title could be work more than an advancement, pending on both to factor in. And for the record, winning your 10th World Title means very little when compared to your first in any federation. Generally, it is like this.
* Career Advancement
* Titles
* Great matches
* Markout Moment"
Letting personal bias affect your voting for something so prestigious as Wrestler of the Week? FOR SHAME.

Wrestler of the Week = Sheamus hands down.
Posted By: Truff (Guest) on December 13, 2009 at 09:49 PM
I told you all on the live feed that Sheamus would win wrestler of the week.
Posted By: Truff (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 01:53 PM
Michael Bauer
3) Drew McIntyre: I surely would have never seen him beating Morrison.
------
Right, because, Sheamus' win was SOOOO predictable and hardly elevated his position in the company, or the world of wrestling in general. (read: sarcasm)
Being a writer on this site, your goal should be to prove that your words mean something. That, although without credentials, you have some sort of "expert" opinion. Leaving out Sheamus from your list means you have no grasp on this whole thing whatsoever. I'm sure you left him out just to rile people up, but why? Just to be a douche?! Your reputation as a wrestling writer means absolutely nothing?
I hate you, internet.

Seriously.

Stop commenting about Bauer guys. That's obviously what he wants. There's always going to be one writer straying away from the norm to get themselves over.
Posted By: Gozzo (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 02:22 PM
What's funny is it doesn't get him "over". Being hated in wrestling is good because people will pay to see you get your ass-kicked. Online, that doesn't happen. Most people simply stop reading columns he is accociated with. It made perfect sense of Sheamus to win, and and I told people I thought he would as soon as it was made a tables match, but honestly I didn't expect it. It made sense, but the second Cena crashed through that table I was shell-shocked as I bet 99% of all internet fans were. Casual fans were probably not so much as shocked, but that was up there for moment of the year.
I probably would have put McIntyre as #2, Sheamus as a far far beyond #1, DX at #3, then it's a tossup between Christian/Shelton/Orton for the last two.

The correct answers were:
1. Sheamus
2. Drew McIntyre
3. DX
4. Christian/Shelton Benjamin
5. The Undertaker
Posted By: SpankyHamm (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 03:31 PM
I like DX, but I don't get the "it took them 12 years too late" stuff. Have you forgotten that when DX formed HBK and HHH weren't tag team partners- Hunter was his lackey, his goon, his back-up?
And most popular team in history? They are up there, but was any team nearly as over as The New Age Outlaws?
Posted By: Tim (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 03:43 PM
You know, I use to think, "Bauer gets way too much hate. So he votes for mostly indy and japanese guys, nothing wrong with that."
But wow. Just... incredible. There's no doubt in my mind now that Bauer is a plant of some kind, put in here only to ensure people visit this page and get pissed off when he makes another list. Because really, this is dumb. Dumb on a level that I didn't think was possible.
You know when there's a vote in something like, say, Basketball MVP. And some guy like Michael Jordan has an incredible season, dominates everyone, but doesn't get all of the first places votes? You always wonder, who was the complete inept idiot who didn't think Michael Jordan was the best?
That was Bauer.

I'm just completely lost here. Two total fucking glorified jobbers with absolutely no charisma, ring skills or proven abilities are pushed to the moon on the strength of what? Sheamus absolutely sucks. Drew McIntyre is a complete joke. Why didn't Collin Delaney get the WWE belt? No steroids?
Posted By: Dick Flair (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 04:25 PM
I wouldn't have put Sheamus on there to begin with. He's not ready for a title yet. His moment should've been special, but instead came off as cheap. He deserves better.
Posted By: The Great Capt. Smooth (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 05:17 PM
*ahem* .. To quote Byers, regarding Sheamus: "This is how the promotion should treat new stars, not keeping a guy under contract for years and using him as a midcarder, to one week decide to flip a switch and turn him into a main event level performer."
Well, remove the time constraints, and that's EXACTLY what they did with Sheamus, Ryan. First, he was beating up jobbers on ECW, then he retires a cruiserweight, beats up an announcer, and now he's Raw's centerpiece. If that isn't the definition of "flipping a switch", I'd like to know what is.
Posted By: Jed (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 05:26 PM
So DX wins the tag gold on the same night that the two guys they are high on...win gold as well. Not to mention, CM Punk, not the favorite of Hunter or Steph is in the dark match. It's never been more clear who's calling the shots.
Posted By: Kevin (Guest) on December 14, 2009 at 05:53 PM
All Sheamus did was put Cuban through a table and beat John Cena in a tables match (ie, didn't pin him) this week. Bauer has a job with the site and could have put the crippled kid from Pro Wrestling Ohio as number one if he wanted. If you want a list, finish your English By Mail course and try to get a column.
My biggest problem with Sheamus is that his music is the worst shit this side of the Divas roster.

Go ahead Bauer, try to explain how you don't look like a whiny little 12 year old bitch throwing a tantrum? You are fucking pathetic. Get over yourself little boy.
Posted By: Guest#7742 (Guest) on December 15, 2009 at 12:43 AM
Geez, so he didn't put Sheamus up there! So what? You guys get pissed of WAY too easy. But I must admit it seems Bauer is personally trying to sabotage Sheamus' chances of winning 411mania.com's Wrestler of the Year, of which I'm sure Sheamus is VERY upset about.
Posted By: ThePants (Guest) on December 15, 2009 at 02:35 PM
Colin Delaney was a complete joke from day one to the day he got fired. McIntyre has wrestling ability and he's currently in DX's back pocket, so push away!
