WWE ROYAL RUMBLE!
THE RESULTS
* ECW TITLE MATCH: Christian retained the title over Big Zeke via pin @ 12:00 {**¼}
* WWE US TITLE MATCH: The Miz retained the title over MVP via pin @ 7:30 {**}
* WWE TITLE MATCH: Sheamus retained the title over Randy Orton via DQ @ 12:30 {**}
* WWE WOMEN's TITLE MATCH: Mickie James became the NEW WWE Women's Champion via pin @ 0:03 {NR}
* WWE WORLD TITLE MATCH: The Undertaker retained the title over Rey Mysterio via pin @ {***½}
* THE ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: Edge won the Royal Rumble, last eliminating John Cena @ 49:30 {****}
ECW TITLE MATCH: Christian retained the title over Big Zeke via pin @ 12:00 {**¼}: The opening match of the show was the ECW Title match between Christian and Big Zeke. As Big Zeke came to the ring, I noticed Regal sporting the evil black suit, which made me happy because he looked perfect as the mentor, but also made me sad, because this is a guy that needs to be working with the young talents like Zeke IN the ring. But I digress. Christian has been a great champion for ECW, and I was finally expecting the title change to happen in this match. For the most part, this is what you would expect from a Christian match. He did his part perfectly, he sold well, he kept the pace perfect for his limited opponent, there were some good reversals and near falls and it all flowed very well. I will say that Zeke is improving, obviously working the house shows with Christian has helped a great deal, and what they had planned was solid, if unspectacular. I will give credit to him for improving, but there were some errors, like failing on the reverse DDT, and the fact that out of nowhere they tried to sell Zeke's clothesline as a finisher. Add into this that the crowd was in and out if it the whole time, and it just didn't deliver as far as a thumbs up type of deal. But in the end, a solid way to open the show, but it could have been better.
WWE US TITLE MATCH: The Miz retained the title over MVP via pin @ 7:30 {*½}: I have to say, that unless it is something REALLY cool, I am not a fan of impromptu matches on PPV. First of all you gave something away that could have been possibly used to draw for another PPV, secondly, you are sometimes adding to a card that doesn't need matches added to it. They added The Miz vs. MVP for the US Title to the Rumble PPV, and I didn't like it. First of all they could have built up to it for the next PPV, or heaven forbid, actually build it for a Raw main event and give the guys the spotlight. Secondly, they did shoehorn it into the show, as they only gave it 7:30. With the PPV closing with extra time left, they could have given them a few more minutes to make this worth it. They went out there with a 15-20-minute match and gave us the Reader's Digest version of the match, and that never works out well. It felt way too rushed, disjointed at times, and the finish was very anticlimactic. Don't get me wrong, Miz needs clean wins from time to time to establish himself, but between the piss poor booking of MVP heading into the match and the finish being as weak as it was, they would have been better leaving this off of the card all together. In closing, they either need to have Miz kill an old lady or turn him face, because the crowd is deciding that they like him, and the post match attack by MVP did NOT get the reaction they wanted, as the crowd pretty much shit on him for attacking Miz.
WWE TITLE MATCH: Sheamus retained the title over Randy Orton via DQ @ 12:30 {**}: Unlike many, I have enjoyed Sheamus. I don't think he is great, but he is doing some of the little things that makes me have hope for him as an overall performer. The heel vs. heel dynamic didn't mean much to me, because I felt that they would cheer Orton, and they did. The match was slow and deliberate, which I also expected from these two, but in the end, I was not satisfied. The match was just there, just there to set up the post match angle. That is fine in a way, but you still have to deliver the match. This match did nothing to help Sheamus, and while it didn't hurt him, at this stage of the game, he needs all the help he can get to be viewed as a legit, top of the card guy. Instead of working towards that, they decided that the Legacy split was more important. While an Orton face turn could be good, he has those Steve Austin maverick qualities about him (I DID NOT STAY THAT HE WAS STEVE AUSTIN OR AS GOOD AS HIM) that could make it work. But the facts are that Legacy have been booked so poorly over the last, what, 18-months, that no one is going to buy them as a legit threat on their own. In my opinion, this whole segment let a lot to be desired. But wait, Let's not forge the DQ on a MAJOR PPV. Ugh…
WWE WOMEN's TITLE MATCH: Mickie James became the NEW WWE Women's Champion via pin @ 0:03 {NR}: I fully admit that I have not been a big fan of the "Piggy James" angle. Michelle McCool has the charisma of a piece of a 2x4 and the body to match. But the fact is that when you do such a huge humiliation angle, the face, when they finally get their comeuppance on the heel, has to do it in spectacular fashion to make it pay off and so that they do not walk away BERRIED. McCool ran her mouth, she brought out Layla in the fat suit again, and Mickie came out, beat Layla's ass, got in the ring, hit her finish and won the title in seconds. I will say that while I DO tend to dislike title matches that are so short like this, especially on PPV, that this angle worked WAY better than a full match. The crowd shit on McCool, but popped huge for Mickie and her run in, they popped for the title win and then the after match angle of retribution was perfect. The face divas came out with a cake, and Mickie got to toss it into the faces of her abusers. Everyone liked it, Mickie got her revenge, she is champion again and the angle pays off. Now I hope that she moves onto matches with Beth, Serena and Natalya, because they are strong female heels and should make for fun matches.
WWE WORLD TITLE MATCH: The Undertaker retained the title over Rey Mysterio via pin @ {***½}: Going into the match, I had two thoughts. First of all, Taker had to win to keep the suspense for the Rumble match alive, regarding HBK. The second was of concern, due to the fact that Rey's knee is jacked up again, and Taker has been slowed due to the hip injury/replacement. I will say that at the end of the match, I was pleasantly surprised. The first thing that I noticed is that this felt like a "major" PPV match. That "big match feel" so to speak. I felt that both guys worked hard, and that they went in with a smart and simple game plan. Taker would use the power, and in a bit of smoke and mirrors, the match appeared to keep a rapid pace due to Rey's speed. Something else that I felt added to the match was that Taker's nose got busted open, likely due to Rey's knee brace. It wasn't a ton of blood, but when the blood in WWE is so little these days, it worked well, showing that the Undertaker was able to be hurt against the smaller opponent. The match was an easy one to enjoy, with enough hope spots for Rey where you thought he had a chance, which made the match better. Taker got the win with a definitive last ride, and looks to head to WM as the champion.
THE ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: Edge won the Royal Rumble, last eliminating John Cena @ 49:30 {****}: While this will not go down as the greatest Rumble match of all time, there was a lot that I really enjoyed, even if the match was shorter than usual. The first thing I loved about the match was the opening portion with the Straight Edge Reverend, Dirty Hippy Jesus, CM Punk. Eliminating fools while preaching his straight edge mantra was a fun and different way to work the opening of the match and I enjoyed that. I did hate that HHH killed the momentum of the Punk run and that he was gone so soon, but that's the way shit goes some times. HHH was then the focus, he battled Legacy and just when he looked down and out HBK made the save. HBK then played the man obsessed, eliminating fools left and right, and then, then we got down to DX. But before they could face off, John Cena made his entrance into the match. They fought, and then in shades of Diesel getting superkicked to the floor, HBK eliminated HHH and proved how obsessed that he was. They then battled through the parade of guys to come, until things then got interesting and followed some cool continuity as Kofi and Jericho got involved. But then shit got real when CRAZY BEARDED EDGE CAME BACK at #29. He dished out a spear buffet, and then Batista would close it out as #30. Edge eliminated Jericho, and things looked good for the Boyhood Dream middle aged man's fantasy to come true, only for Batista to eliminate HBK. HBK was excellent here as he went into crazed Shawn mode, and was so pissed that he was gone. He begged to get back into the match, he begged for one more chance, and when LIL NAITCH asked what Shawn wanted him to do, SUPERKICK for you my friend! Shawn then went to the back, slowly going insane the closer he got to the back, and it was wonderful. Shawn was gone, and Edge ended up with the comeback victory, and by doing so, may have totally changed the picture that most had for WrestleMania, which isn't a bad thing. They needed a good match and surprise/return like this on the show, and they got it.
MY TAKE ON THE SHOW
Not a blow away show by any means, not a bad show, but an interesting onramp to the road to WrestleMania. Sheamus, Taker and Christian all retain their titles, Legacy finally looks to be done, Edge is back and into the mix, Miz and MVP will continue their feud and Mickie got her revenge. Not a blow away show in terms of in ring action, but they did some solid things to set for the big run to Maina, and that is a good thing. The first half of the show is forgettable and I would just skip it, but Mickie's revenge worked, Taker vs. Rey was good and the Rumble delivered, and pulled this from crap to an enjoyable, but average show.

Fuck the WWE for not keeping Punk in longer. I was actually entertained with him, and I wanted to see Beth Phoenix in there longer. How cool would it be for DX to be in the ring and then Beth challenging her.
I'm not sure if I agree with Edge winning. I knew he was going to be in the Rumble, but I thought he was just going to go crazy and eliminate Jericho and himself at the same time, thus setting up a match at Wrestlemania and Cena going on to challenege Undertaker. Leaving an opening for HBK to go crazy on Triple H.
But whatever, decent Rumble. Now we know that Jericho is going to win the belt at Elimination Chamber.
Rating: ***3/4

Whats wrong with making ppl like orton mvp or miz tweeners? It seems after the attitude era tweeners where no where to be seen or they only lasted maybe a couple of weeks while the wrestler changed from face 2 heel or other way round

PUNK was the MVP by a mile.

Can't say I agree on the actual Rumble match getting ****. It was so overly-scripted, each competitor sticking ridigly to their choreographed plot (enter at 20:24, briefly showcase moves until 21:12, await one of the main-eventers to throw you out at 21:20) that it lacked fluidity.
Don't get me wrong, CM Punk's part was one of the most memorable moments you'll likely ever see in a Rumble match, and the Beth Phoenix/Edge appearances and HHH-elimination also had me 'marking out', but I want Rumble's to feature tons of guys in the ring, some clinging to the ropes, others working together to throw the big guy out etc. - not second-by-second choreography where only a couple of established main-eventers are allowed to stay in the ring at a time.

Christian vs. Zeke was MOTN by far. Match pretty much shit all over the rest of the show. Rating it at **1/4 is preposterous.
Easily ***1/2, if not higher.
Rey vs. Taker might have been ***.

No love for Christian-Zeke from Csonka either? I really am surprised the pros here didn't enjoy it as much as I did. It seemed to me that they really sold the crowd on the match, which was great following the silence that greeted Shelton and the champ at TLC.
Zeke definitely exceeded all expectations, and Christian proved more enjoyable than usual, since he hit the big man with a lot more force than usual. The crowd got behind Jackson, despite likely having no idea who he was, seeing him pull off some of those sweet power moves.
I'm with Paul--match of the night (outside the rumble itself), ***½.

The surprise entrants were pretty good, including that youth from Toronto, but nothing special, nothing really GLORIOUS, if you get my meaning!

What a shock, you have such a horn for CM Punk and his promo during the royal rumble, if any other wrestler cut a promo during the rumble you would have thought it was stupid

I Fully agree about Christian/Jackson being the MOTY.
If there is ONE worker who is totally underrated right now it's Mr Christian Cage.
Zeke is obviously a big slow and stiff kind of worker, the generic big powerful man Vince loves so much.
Christian did EVERYTHING in his power to make Zeke looking like his equal in the ring and it paid beyond any expectations.
Captain Charisma took a lot of punishment and amazing bumps and made Zeke looking an unstoppable and credible monster in the process.
The ending with a lot of near falls had me on the edge of my seat and they sold it brillantly.
Definitively 3 stars and a half and the MOTN by a HUGE Margin IMO.
As for Taker vs Rey, it's the opposite : people are totally overrating it.
The Dead Man was wrestling in slow mo (he is obviously in HUGE pain from a few parts of his body) and it's Mysterio who carried his formidable opponent how he could.
It was pretty boring and uneventful and Taker finishing Rey to his second finisher if not the third one (if you cound Hell's Gate) proved that Mysterio was nothing but a special attraction and a guy to give taker something to do while he brings the gold onto The SD! EC Feb 21.
Rating for Taker vs Rey : 2 and half

Faggin' Gate USA
I guess no one can argue about your PPV ranking for them because you're probably the only person that watches them.
In that case, the RWF $10 Tournament of Champions should be a 10!

As a (seemingly ex-) TNA fan, the problem isn't that TNA uses tweeners. The problem is that they don't seem to know WHAT their wrestlers are from week to week. There's a difference.
A tweener is someone who is on the fence -- a face who does heelish things, or a heel who plays to the crowd. I've never been a huge fan of them (and feel they've been highly overused since 1996, in WWE, WCW, and TNA). However, their behavior is consistently on the fence.
That's where TNA is failing. They've shown in the past that they can book tweeners just fine (early Joe is their best example, though Daniels consistently rides the fence). But more often than not, one week they establish someone as a face, the next they're a heel, and the next they're a face.
That's not a tweener -- that's someone who flip-flops back and forth. THAT is what causes confusion, but that doesn't mean that tweeners, by nature, are confusing.
Right now, they have Hogan, Nash, Bischoff, Jarrett, and probably 40 more that I can't think of that seem to not know what they are. That's just not good booking.
Which is why I'm not watching TNA any more. Maybe once they settle out of the "crash TV" crap that's been dead for 10 years, I'll get reinterested. But, until then, I'm not watching wrestling in general.

Larry why isn't the Chris Hero/Kenny Omega match listed for best TV match? That match was fantastic and on the level, if not above the Strong/Richards match.
Posted By: Sha (Guest) on February 02, 2010 at 01:12 PM
Why does no one like Zeke/Christian? Was the best singles match of the night. MVP/Miz and Sheamus/Orton were boring, and Taker/Rey was a foregone conclusion. Zeke had a better then average chance of winning, and the match was pretty good. I thought Zeke's moves were pretty good, as he used lots of basic power moves you don't see very much any more, and Christian's counters are always good. There was a little flub on the reverse ddt, but since it happened on the split screen no one saw it. I thought the match was at least ***

I'm sorry, the PPV was too predictable. Anybody who has been following wrestling the last three months saw all this going down. Come on, Edge winning the Rumble using the same storyline as SCSA, HHH, Orton and Cena did when they were coming back for a "career ending injury". Good job WWE writers, way to be creative.
Then you have the title matches:
1) Christian wins over a guy who was on the bubble to get canned.
2) Miz and MVP show why both should be US champs
3) Sheamus retains by the same way he has retained against any of the main eventers in his title reign....DQ. Again good job writers. Way to make your champ look good.
4) Mickie wins because of, again, stupid writers and the "fat storyline. I can't wait for the McCool Stupid Blond storyline.
5) Taker retaining....awesome! Now, we have a champ that will defend one time before Mania (EC) before taking another six months off. Taker retire already...PLEASE!
Overall TNA won this month!

As jimbob jones said, if tna wrestlers stayed consistent and didnt flip flop between faces heels it would make more sense, but my problem here is with wwe & wrestlers like mvp orton etc because when they started to get cheered when they were heels, wwe decided to turn them face and they lost everything about them that made them interesting.
I just hope they dont fuck up with edge's face run

Punk and whats-her-face MADE the Rumble.
Khali plays the gentleman (aka: "it's the 1950's, so I can't hit a woman, go to the back and make me a sandwich, Woman") role, gets elim'd as a result,
Striker makes the most misogynistic comment that ever wasn't,
Punk, in keeping with his progressive ideology, hits his finisher then tosses her AFTER she proves she's really in the match by getting a few licks in! The most genuine female empowerment I've seen in the mass media outside of Mad Men or a Joss Whedon show in years. Very cool.
Punk... Gold! Faking out the shiny panted jabroni with the obviously ill-placed Straight Edge speech (I assume that kid is running some dancer/raver/party kid gimmick right?) was perfect.
And to the commenter who complained about "overly-scripted, each competitor sticking ridigly to ... plot (enter, briefly showcase moves, await one of the main-eventers to throw you out)"... have you ever seen a Rumble before?
You just described every Rumble ever. New guy comes in, house on fire, takes turns on everyone, back to status quo, rinse, repeat. HHH (this year, usually it is HBK) napping on the mat, getting up only to fit in the format as above; and finally "what quirky way will the big guys go out this year".
Please don't take this description as a complaint, I AM a WWE hater but the Rumble (and this Year was no exception) is always the high point of their PPV offerings in any given year.

I'm really sick of Mickie James and Michelle McCool. We all know McCool is a charismatic void, but Mickie just bores me to death as well.
Mickie is so fucking bland, and moves like she is in slow motion. She's one of the more over divas, but is not a high level talent. And no offense to any of her fans, but she is not attractive. If you like her thick body that's one thing, but her face is just so ordinary, bordering on ugly alot of times. She's overpushed and overrated.
Didn't mean to rant there, but I just really hope she's leaving. I knew that this stupid fat angle was not a "burial", and that it would end with her getting her revenge.
But now that they got that out of the way, I hope she's going to use the next couple of months to put over a couple of divas, and drop the belt to somebody like Beth or Natalya in her last match. She's not some huge figure in women's wrestling, but she does deserve some sort of sendoff just for managing to get fan support in this pathetic era for the divas. It's not much of a "torch" to pass, but I wouldn't mind if they gave her a decent finale where she put somebody over big and then got to say goodbye.

I'd forgotten about Shawn kicking Diesel out so many years ago... While some may se it as a "rehash" I like to think of it as continuity. Gotta say, hate seconds-long matches on PPV, but considering it's a Divas match and the storyline, I guess it makes sense. Starship-Fucking-Troopers you are, sir.

I never get it when IWC character complain about matches not being thrown on PPV or matches given away on free TV. You don't work for the company so just enjoy the fact that the match is there.
'I would rather pay for this!'
'I only want what i thought i was getting...nothing extra!'
I understand if a wwe official was complaining from a buisness persepctive but it is beneficial to us all as viewers.

I hope that Michelle McCool, now that she's no longer women's champ, can go back to being carried around by Hacksaw Duggan.
