411Mania’s Countdown to WrestleMania XXVI 03.17.10: From the Vault - Mania Dream Cards
Posted by Aaron Hubbard on 03.17.2010

Graphic By Meehan

Last year, one of 411's readers issued a challenge to many of the writers: put together an "Ultimate Wrestlemania" comprised of past Wrestlemania matches. While it was largely ignored, I was rather fond of the concept, and it actually ties into what I do come Wrestlemania season. While some people have the tradition of watching every Wrestlemania on the days leading up to it, I prefer to watch different matches from different 'Manias, showcasing different wrestlers working different styles in different eras. I find it to be a great showcase of everything that makes Wrestlemania special, a run through "The Wrestlemania Vault". So, how does one create a list of the best Wrestlemania matches?

Initially, I figured it would be easy to make this imaginary super-card of sorts. However, as I started looking, it became more and more and more difficult: how could I choose between Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart and Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin? Was The Rock's greatest Wrestlemania Match with Hulk Hogan at X-8 or with Steve Austin the year before? And how on earth do you pick just ONE Shawn Michaels match out of the many classics he has had at the show?

Turns out, an easy solution presented itself: create more than one card! And why should I keep it to myself? I went wandering through the internet, found out that 411's Smackdown Reviewer Michael Uphoff wasn't doing much, and neither was his brother Kenneth Uphoff. Since we are all proud wrestling nerds with nothing to do on a Saturday Night (I keed, I keed), we put our heads together, and decided that each of us would put together our own super card. In the spirit of competition, and in the interest of showcasing thirty of the best Wrestlemania matches, we decided not to use each other's matches.

Actually, part of that is a lie; I talked to Kenneth first and he gave me his card, and then I talked to Mike and he couldn't use Kenneth's matches: I chose to put the most pressure on myself, as I cannot use matches from either man's list. If I would have been SMART, we would have done a draft, but alas....maybe next year.

HERE ARE THE RULES!!!:

Because everything is more fun with rules! So, here they are.

Rule Numero Uno: Each person shall create a Wrestlemania Card of exactly ten matches.
Rule Numero Dos: No wrestler may be used twice, even under a different gimmick. However, a wrestler may interfere in one match and still be used in another one (such as Vince McMahon interfering in Austin vs. Rock II).
Rule Numero Tres: No more than one match from any given Wrestlemania may be used.
Rule Numero Quatro: Each card MUST have the following wrestlers: Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and The Rock.
Rule Numero Cinco: Each card MUST have two "World Title" Matches: either the WWF Championship, the WWE Championship, or the World Heavyweight Championship.
Rule Numero The Next One: No title may be used more than once, including appearances by a champion in a non-title match (such as Shelton Benjamin in the first Money in the Bank; he was the Intercontinental Champion, and so no other Intercontinental Champion should be on the show). The one exception is that the WWF and WWE Champions are considered separate titles, due to the limited number of matches for the WHC and generation gap.
Rule Numero The Last: The opening match MUST be a legitimate opener from one of the Wrestlemanias.

Got all that? With that in mind, here is the card that Kenneth Uphoff came up with.

Match 1: Edge vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Mr. Kennedy vs. King Booker vs. Randy Orton vs. Matt Hardy vs. CM Punk vs. Finlay, Money in the Bank Ladder Match - Wrestlemania XXII
Out of the many ladder matches that have graced the screens of us all at Wrestlemania, few I deem have been underappreciated as this match has become. Yea verily, it is not the best one (MITB I), however it led off a Wrestlemania and set the tone for that PPV. The RKO off the ladder to Punk. A missed Kenton Bomb on a ladder followed up by a Swanton Bomb. Jeff Hardy taking Edge and himself out through a propped up ladder outside. And my personal favorite, a Green Bay Plunge on Hornswoggle from the top of the ladder. This was an 8-man I liked the match for the interesting stories inside it. Rated-RKO both inside the match, as well as the Hardy Boyz. Matt Hardy's well-documented feud with Edge. Mr. Kennedy's evolving tweener-type character. The epic King Booker gimmick. Not only did the stories and gimmicks help, but the spots were awesome as well. Punk's spinning ladder tribute to Terry Funk. The RKO off the top of the ladder, The Bookend off the top of the ladder, Jeff Hardy taking Edge and himself out of the match through the ladder, and my personal favorite, the Green Bay Plunge to Hornswoggle from the top of the ladder. MIDGET VIOLENCE! This was the first MITB match to have more than 6 people, which it made a bit more difficult to run smoothly, and that's why it's special.

Match 2: Mr. Perfect vs. The Blue Blazer - Wrestlemania V
Ok, first off, so the match is only like 6 minutes long. So what? I was told this was a match I should see not for the time length, but the work involved. So watch it I did, and enjoy it I did. This match is a six-minute wrestling exhibition between Owen Hart and Mr. Perfect. It never slows down, never feels like time is wasted. It contains great chain wrestling and mat work for its time. Oh yeah, and the two wrestlers are Owen Hart and Mr. Perfect. Next.

Match 3: Bret Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin, No Disqualification Submission Match - Wrestlemania 13
This match, to me, kicked off the Attitude Era with the double turn of Bret and Austin. It was a great match, an epic match, between two guys who people thought weren't going to put on a good match at Wrestlemania. Fact is, this match saved Wrestlemania 13 from Wrestlemania 9-land. It featured great psychology, great storytelling, and come on, Stone Cold bleeding and suffering from the Sharpshooter? That's an iconic moment, just like Hogan slamming Andre and Stone Cold aligning with Vince McMahon. Or Montreal. I love this match because, to me, it kicks off the greatest era of pro wrestling. I could write a veritable litany of words on this match, but suffice it to say that this match kick-started the greatest era of pro-wrestling, saved a tepid Wrestlemania, and pretty much morphed some guy named Stone Cold Steve Austin's career into a main-event icon. Not bad for one match, if I do say so myself.

Match 4: Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage, Intercontinental Championship - Wrestlemania III
Ok, I'm going to keep this really simple. This match is the greatest Intercontinental Championship match of all time. Bar none. Forget the two Ladder Matches between Hall and HBK. This match stands above them. The two workers in this match alone bring this match to a hallowed level. Steamboat and Savage, in their time, put on an all-time classic in the throes of psychology, mat wrestling, and high-flying ability. I still mark out for the finish, the small package counter out of a scoop slam. Simple, but so effective after being worn down. Add in the fact that it was in front of almost 100,000 fans on the grandest stage of them all, and you have your reasons why it is on here.

Match 5: Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock- Wrestlemania X-8
Ok, to be painfully honest, I don't like this match. At all. I've never been a fan of Hogan, and I actually rooted for Vince to beat him at Wrestlemania 19, so I'd never have to see him again. If only. Hatred of Hogan aside, the match itself is on here because of one thing: atmosphere. The star of the 80s, Hogan, versus the star of the 90s, The Rock, one-on-one at Mania. While the in-ring work was nothing to die for, it nonetheless was solid in-ring work that told a good story. But the spectacle, the atmosphere, the environment, was what made this match great. I could do without ever watching it again, but when I do watch it, I marvel at the crowd and how into the match they are. No one is bored, no one is making snarky comments (that I could hear), everyone was drawn to this match. Plus, it's not like Hogan hasn't had worse matches than this at Wrestlemania. Overall, few matches had an impact on the crowd and the industry like this match did. That is why it deserves to be on here.

Match 6: Shane McMahon vs. Vince McMahon, Street Fight - Wrestlemania X-Seven
This match is a guilty favorite of mine. It's nothing that someone will remember the next day when they think of the PPV, but it's just one of those hardcore-type matches that will make you go "DAMN" every so often. That being said, I endorse Ron Simmons for the WWE Hall of Fame. Getting back on topic, this match had a decent storyline with Linda and Vince and Shane defending his mother. And come on, who in a kayfabe sense didn't enjoy Linda straight jacking Vince in the jewels in the middle of the ring at Wrestlemania? I laughed so hard when I first saw that, soda shot out my nose. That didn't tickle. The best part was Shane-O-Mac debuting the Van Terminator, the coast-to-coast dropkick with a trashcan. Sure, the match is nothing special, but it imbues us all with one fact: There is no length to which Vince will go to make sure we enjoy Wrestlemania. He will publicly humiliate himself at his greatest creation, time in, time out, in order to placate the fans. What other boss do you know who would do something like that again and again?

Match 7: The Undertaker vs. Kane - Wrestlemania XIV
This match is underappreciated in my book. It's a great big man match, though not in psychology so much as storytelling. Kane was built as the first man who could ever beat Taker at will. Even people didn't think he could beat Kane at Wrestlemania. Not to mention the mere fact that it took 3 Tombstone Piledrivers to put Kane down for a 3 count, which he kicked out at. And after that, Kane Tombstoned Taker on a chair! This was unheard of. Taker dominated people at Mania, he always had the last laugh. Kane didn't let him get that, letting Taker know their feud was far from over. Kane made Taker go to new heights in this match in order to get the win. He made Taker work harder, act more desperate, and pull out anything to win, in kayfabe sense. That's why this match is special, because for the first time Taker looked like he BARELY won at Wrestlemania, and it looked like more trouble was on the horizon.

Match 8: Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar, WWE Championship - Wrestlemania XIX
I'm not really sure why this match has become a forgotten classic, but it has. Two great mat wrestlers, a great storyline, and an epic buildup. What's to forget? Obviously, Brock nearly killing himself on the SSP didn't help matters, but that is not what this match should be remembered for. This match featured mat wrestling, power, suplexes galore, and intensity off the charts. Plus, Lesnar dragging Angle halfway across the ring in the Anklelock is always a cool visual. Also the fact that Angle kicked out of the F5 was cool, since Brock virtually destroyed the world according to WWE with that move. This match didn't have any high-flying action to woo people in, but it was chock full of great mat work and wrestling strategy. Plus Brock nearly killing himself with the SSP is kinda fun to watch, albeit in a Michael Myers sense. You know what's going to happen, but you can't look away. This match main-evented one of the best overall Wrestlemanias and should be remembered as such.

Match 9: Mickie James vs. Trish Stratus, Women's Championship - Wrestlemania 22
Ok, part of the reason I picked this match was because I wanted a Women's Title match on here, and this was the only good one I could think of. Mickie's lesbian psycho-stalker character was killer and the male fanbase was behind her, judging by the sounds of the crowd. This match was given good time, and featured good psychology and storytelling. Mickie's vaginal claw on Trish was a decent touch to her psycho character. She also was working over Trish's knee, which explained why she couldn't finish her Stratusfaction attempt. Sadly, WWE edited that part out of the DVD, and the finish comes out of nowhere as Mickie hits the Mick Kick on Trish for the title. The entire match was one-of-a-kind, but memorable as it ushered in a new day in women's wrestling in the WWE. Trish would leave at Unforgiven, and Lita would leave at Survivor Series of that same year, leaving Mickie to take the mantle of the division. This was as close as we were going to get to a passing of the torch. As to why I like this match? Mickie's hot, Trish is hot. And they wrestle. I win. Everyone wins.

Match 10: Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Benoit, World Heavyweight Championship - Wrestlemania XX
First off, to the people who are offended by Benoit still, shut up. Move on. Second, this match is probably the most epic match of any Wrestlemania. Chris Benoit trying to win his big one, while HBK and HHH had unfinished business. The match itself is stellar, with great in-ring work and psychology. The counters are nice, like HBK giving Benoit a German Suplex and then Benoit gives him three in exchange. Benoit being put through the table was good too, as it gave HBK and HHH a chance to tell their side of the story in the context of the match. The spots of this match were nice too. Benoit BARELY breaking up the pin after HHH hits the Pedigree on a bloodied HBK and everyone thinking HHH was retaining. Benoit locking HHH in the Sharpshooter, and being cracked with Sweet Chin Music. Benoit locking HHH in the Crossface one final time, with that final rollthrough, HHH getting trapped in the middle of the ring and being forced to tap out to relinquish his title. And Eddie running down after the match and posing with Benoit to end the show. This match culminated a great odyssey for Benoit, finally winning his long-awaited championship. Of course, more recent events have had us look at Benoit differently, and that's fine. But on this night, Benoit was the best, and this was the best match ever at Wrestlemania, and it deserves to be the main event of an Ultimate Wrestlemania.

Not a bad Wrestlemania if I do say so myself, although a little crowded. I can't imagine having time to breathe watching Bret-Austin, Savage-Steamboat, and Rock-Hogan one after the other, but it's still an excellent card and he made good use of his "first come, first serve" advantage. Could his brother Mike Uphoff possibly top it?

Match 1: Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart - Wrestlemania X
For me, this is the greatest opener in Wrestlemania history. Nothing even comes close. It is perhaps the ultimate sibling rivalry match, and being a twin, it makes this match even greater in my mind. No one ever thought Owen would win, especially with Bret facing Yokozuna in the main event. This is why I chose this as my opener.

Match 2: Rob Van Dam vs. William Regal, Intercontinental Championship - Wrestlemania X-8
This is an under-appreciated match for me that saw one of the most talented workers go up against a fast rising star in the WWE. Regal brought the technical wrestling and RVD brought the flashiness, and the two mixed well in my opinion. Not the greatest IC title match at Wrestlemania, but nothing to sneeze at either. Two hard workers put on a good match, and that's why I chose it.

Match 3: Chris Benoit vs. Montel Vontavious Porter, United States Championship - Wrestlemania 23
While it seemed that Benoit had lost some of his fire, MVP more than brought his working boots for this match. This featured Benoit's technical ability and trying to get MVP to tap out versus MVP's resourcefulness in being able to effectively counter both the Crossface and the Sharpshooter every time Benoit tried to lock them in. Benoit was forced to utilize German suplexes and the diving headbutt to get the pinfall, but this match showed that the wily veteran had to use all his tricks to outsmart the young gun who did his homework. This match showcased MVP as a legitimate upper mid-carder, and that is why I chose it.

Match 4: Edge & Christian vs. The Dudley Boyz vs. The Hardy Boyz, WWF Tag Team Championship Triangle Ladder Match - Wrestlemania 2000
In my mind, this match is greater than TLC II at Wrestlemania X-Seven. Not by much, but this is the match where it all started. Tables, ladders, and chairs oh my! This match set the bar for all TLC matches that would follow this. While this isn't a TLC match, this match first introduced tag teams that would come to be known for being in TLC matches: The Dudley Boys, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. This match made them famous, and set the bar for the TLC matches that would come. Insane spots and just a bunch of fun all around make this a no-brainer for the Ultimate Wrestlemania.

Match 5: Hulk Hogan vs. Vince McMahon, Street Fight - Wrestlemania XIX
Admit it. You loved it when Vince got his ass kicked. As did I. However, that is not the reason that I picked this match. I picked this match because of Rowdy Roddy Piper interfering and hitting Hulk Hogan with a lead pipe. I marked out for that huge! Remembering all the way back to the main event of the first Wrestlemania, and how eighteen years later, the WWE could still play off of that made me appreciate this match even more. Sure, it's not a great match, but it's Vince getting his ass kicked at Wrestlemania, which is what he does best. That's why it's on my list.

Match 6: The Big Show vs. Floyd "Money" Mayweather - Wrestlemania XXIV
I never thought that this match had any potential. However, after seeing it, I could see that both athletes worked hard to sell this match. Big Show had some great promos for this match, and Mayweather worked his ASS off to get anyone and everyone to care by going on all sorts of talk shows and media sources promoting his match. I knew who was going to win, but I didn't care. The wrestler vs. boxer mentality was kinda hard to get through at first, but both men performed admirably. At a Wrestlemania, you need to have a match that is going to draw other people besides wrestling fans to see your PPV. This was a special attraction match that worked out better than anyone dreamed it would, and that is why it was chosen.

Match 7: Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage, Retirement Match - Wrestlemania VII
This match did not look pretty on paper, but it delivered in two ways. Number one, Warrior and Savage had a hell of a match that was great. Warrior looked like a beast ending the career of the Macho Man, and the Macho Man looked great in defeat. The other way it delivered was the reuniting of Savage and Miss Elizabeth. Savage realizing that she had saved him from a beatdown by Sherri Martel and then hugging her and then lifting her up on his shoulders, and then opening the ring ropes for her is one of the greatest moments in wrestling history. For those two moments, this match deserves to be on everyone's ultimate Wrestlemania card.

Match 8: Kurt Angle vs. Eddie Guerrero, WWE Championship - Wrestlemania XX
This match featured two of the greatest mat workers in the business. This was a great WWE Championship match that featured a lot of counters and great amounts of technical mat wrestling. Kurt Angle's ability to wrestle was evenly matched by an underrated Guerrero, and the best part was Eddie doing his usual thing at the end of the match. Angle had the Anklelock locked in, and Eddie made the ropes. He then lied, cheated, and stole the WWE Championship, and that is what the crowd loved about him. This remains one of the greatest WWE Championship matches in history, and that is why it is on the card.

Match 9: The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels- Wrestlemania XXV
This match is not overrated at all in my book. It isn't 5 stars, but it's damn close. Both of these men, who were 43 and 44 respectively, put on an absolute wrestling clinic. This match was spectacular from start to finish, and while there were two botches in the match, this match was an absolute classic in every sense of the word. The look on Taker's face when HBK kicked out of the first Tombstone Piledriver was EPIC. This match deserves to be on all Ultimate Wrestlemania cards as a tribute to over 40 wrestlers showing everyone else how to get it done.

Match 10: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock, WWF Championship - Wrestlemania X-Seven
This match was truly epic in every sense of the word. This was in Houston, Texas, less than an hour away from Stone Cold Steve Austin's hometown. The crowd was MOLTEN. This was a great wrestling match that saw Austin try to do anything and everything to desperately win the title that he needed more than anything. Rock was his usual awesome self at this time. The heel turn by Austin at the end of the match when he joined forces with McMahon was great, but it didn't really work, because they were so close to Austin's hometown that nothing he could do would make the crowd hate him. The crowd was molten for anything he did, and that made this match what it is today. That is why this match is the main event of my Ultimate Wrestlemania.

Now THAT is a card I would gladly pay sixty or seventy dollars to see. Now, the challenge: how do *I*, respected columnist extroadinaire (coughcough) top the brothers Uphoff?

Match 1: Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio - Wrestlemania 21
What kind of wrestling fan would I be if I didn't have my all-time favorite professional wrestler on the card? Fortunately, Eddie Guerrero was involved in one of the best openers in Wrestlemania history with his good friend, great rival, and fellow tag team champion at the time. While not up to the very high standards of their Halloween Havoc classic, it was a very good match. Eddie in particular was on point throughout and put on a wrestling clinic at Mysterio's expense, but in the end, the masked marvel won with a surprise roll-up for a mild upset over the former WWE Champion.

Match 2: Ax & Smash of Demolition vs. Haku & Andre the Giant, WWF Tag Team Championship - Wrestlemania VI
While I can't begrudge either brother for excluding Andre the Giant vs. Hulk Hogan from their lists (something which I also chose not to do), I felt it would be a crime for Andre not to show up once on these list. He is one of great legends of professional wrestling, and I was more than happy to save a spot on the card for this match. In reality, Andre the Giant isn't involved much in the actual match, as Haku carries the action against Demolition, but after the match Andre turns his back on Bobby Heenan at his last major show. The match isn't half-bad, all things considered, but the moment in the sun for The Giant is what gets this match on my card.

Match 3: Mick Foley vs. Edge, Hardcore Match - Wrestlemania 22
Ladders? Who needs ladders? We got chairs, baseball bats, barbwire, thumbtacks and flaming tables! Proving that there was more than one-way to have a "Wrestlemania Carcrash" match, Foley and Edge stole the show at Wrestlemania 22. The final spot is one of the most memorable in 'Mania history, as Edge spear Foley off the apron, diving headfirst into a flaming table to deliver the move. This was Foley's finest performance at 'Mania (granted, there's not much competition) and one of the highlights of Edge's career as well.

Match 4: Kurt Angle vs. Kane – Wrestlemania X-8
This is one of my two "filler matches", I suppose, but it's a match that always gets overlooked, partially because Wrestlemania X-8 as a whole was average, Kane is pretty much synonymous with The Undertaker at 'Mania and Angle has had better matches. However, I'm a sucker for hidden gems, and these guys had some pretty amazing chemistry. The highlight of the match is Kane hitting his awesome enzugiri to counter the Ankle Lock, but the whole match is pretty freaking sweet.

Match 5: Chris Jericho vs. Christian - Wrestlemania XX
Hey, Jericho deserves some love! And so does Christian for that matter. While Wrestlemania is most remembered for it's two title matches and The Undertaker's return, one of my favorite Wrestlemania moments was in this match, a beautiful swerve to the months long romance story between Jericho and Trish Stratus, which bled into an in-ring feud with Jericho's partner Christian, and ended with Trish joining Christian. This was Christian's coming out party as a singles performer, the beginning of Trish's awesome heel character, and cemented Jericho's face turn. Plus, the match was great. Everything a midcard 'Mania match should be.

Match 6: Bret Hart vs. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper - Wrestlemania VIII
With Savage-Steamboat out of the running, there were only two choices for an Intercontinental Championship Match in my eyes; the Ladder Match with Razor, and this match. Well, HBK had more great matches left than Bret did, so I went with Bret. And that's just fine with me; Roddy Piper ends up on my card, AND I get one of my favorite Wrestlemania matches to boot. The storytelling in this is just great and really elevates it, and the finish where Bret climbs the turnbuckles while in Piper's sleeper hold before rolling into a pin is one of the more iconic finishes in 'Mania history. Definitely an underrated gem of a match.

Match 7: The Undertaker vs. Triple H – Wrestlemania X-Seven
Picking one match from Wrestlemania X-Seven is pretty hard, but this one is one of the best on the card, and one of the best 'Mania matches for both participants. This was a wild, fun brawl where Undertaker basically got to punish Triple H for giving the WWF fans and it's top babyfaces Hell for the last year plus. 'Taker gave a great performance in front of his hometown crowd and Triple H was a machine at this point, so a good match was virtually guaranteed.

Match 8: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock- Wrestlemania XIX
The last match of one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. The end of an era, really. While I'm generally against rematches at Wrestlemania, there is a poetic justice in Austin's last match being at the biggest show of them all and losing to The Rock, who he pretty much screwed over two years prior in his vanity quest for the title. While not as good as the second one or even the first, it is still an excellent contest between two of the three biggest names in pro-wrestling history. A fitting addition to my card.

Match 9: John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels, WWE Championship Match – Wrestlemania XIII
I felt that it was an injustice not having John Cena on this card somewhere, since he is now one THE top guy in wrestling. His match with Shawn Michaels, while not the amazing all-time classic WWE tries to hail it as, was a spectacle with big-match feel. There is something very satisfying in seeing a rejuvenated veteran, possibly the best of all time, go one-on-one with WWE's poster boy in the main event of Wrestlemania. A terrific main event and probably one you weren't expected, but I have no shame in including it.

Match 10: Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Savage, WWF Championship - Wrestlemania V
Well hey, I've done nothing but loudly sing this match's praises, so here it is, main eventing my card. This is the classic Wrestlemania main event, two huge stars, a babyface defeating a heel for the title. It's probably Hogan's best match from a technical standpoint, largely due to The Macho Man being awesome. It also has the love-triangle involving Elizabeth, which manages to add to the match without overwhelming it. While the result was never in doubt, this was "truly what the words 'Main Event' were meant for". Just ask Jesse Ventura.

Well, that's all from me folks. So, here's the challenge; with all Wrestlemania matches available to you, and the rules given above, put my card, Mike's card, and Kenneth's card to shame!

The rules cripple it. It's not a dream card at all. It's simply a good card of matches that was a pain in the ass to put together. Stupid shit.

Now can we think up of a worst Wrestlemania card of all time? Maybe a little Lex/Bulldog Vs Blu's to kick it off, Goldberg/Lesnar in the middle and the grand finale of Sid Vs Taker. That's what I call awful!

Kurt Angle vs. Kane?? Really?

You lost me at Hulk vs. Sid. I agree with Macho Warrior though. Better drama than steamboat /savage....and you already have the Euro/IC match + Bret Owen for workrate. But really, Sid and Hulk?

Each card MUST have the following wrestlers: Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and The Rock.

Oh come on :( This rule takes the fun out of it

um....for the first "card" that Money in the Bank happened at WM 23, not XXII. at WM XXII, RVD won the match

I love Trish as much as the next guy, but no way should any woman's match be on this list.

Still offended by Benoit? Yeah people have a problem with people murdering their family. He doesn't deserve a thing he has earned and should be forgotten why should we remember a murderer fondly?

First card is awesome. Resonates with me way more than the other two.

The rules cripple it. It's not a dream card at all. It's simply a good card of matches that was a pain in the ass to put together. Stupid shit.

The rule says you cant have 2 matches from one event, you had 3 from WM17

I agree, Benoit should be erased from anything he ever did. I personally can't watch an old match with him on it, without remembering what he did. To me he didn't exist. There's no way I can see him in a different light. WWE erase this guy from your history.

My personal Favorite Card in order from opening match to closing:

1. Rockers vs Haku/ Barbarian (WM7)- Great and hot opener which showed off how to properly do a big man vs little man match and not have it be boring while going well over 10 minutes. Rockers use a super hot opening and a great closing segment to take it.

2. Edge & Christian vs Dudleys vs Hardys (WM2000)- The first of the trilogy that made stars out of all of them. it had everything, suspense, great spots and a surprise ending as Edge and Christian pull off the upset.

3. Shane McMahon vs. Vince McMahon (WM X7)- Ending to a great feud. A son stands up for his abused Mother, a Tyrant gets whats coming to him, a disgraced mistress gets her revenge for being humiliated and the bitch daughter gets her ass kicked. Plus a Van Terminator. Must see as a showpiece for any feud that needs to properly be blown off.

4. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (WM X)- Brother vs. Brother. Former Champion going against his jealous sibling who is out to make a name for himself at his expense....and the jealous one succeeds. In a upset of upsets, Owen pulls of a clean 3 count on his brother just hours before Bret regains the World title.

5. Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat (WM III)- True definition of grudge match. Savage tried to end Steamboats career by smashing a bell into his throat. Steamboat comes back and wins the one thing Savage treasured just as much as Liz, The IC title. Match was years ahead of its time.

6. HHH vs. The Undertaker (WM X7)- Streak vs Dominance. Deadman vs The Game. At a time when HHH owned everyone, the deadman was just a little better.

7. Steve Austin vs. The Rock (WM X7)- The top two draws of the 90s square off in a heated back and forth battle. Crowd was going crazy, action was non-stop and had a super hot finish.

8. Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan (WM6)- THE true definition of Main Event. Both wrestlers were portrayed as unbeatable. Fans of both wrestlers didnt think either could lose going into this match. At a time when Hogan was untouchable, the crowd was split only about 60-40 for the Hulkster in this one. From start to end the crownd was on their feat, the action was non-stop and in the end the Warrior put an End to the Reign of Hulkamania by doing what nobody had done before. Countered the Legdrop in Shocking and splashed Hogan for the 3 Count. Venturas call of "THE WARRIOR'S WON THE TITLE!" is still shown in almost every wrestlemania highlight even 20 years later.

Part one:

Match 1: Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (Wrestlemania X)

-This one without a doubt is the best openers to a PPV in my opinion, not to mention one of the greatest matches
by the Hart Brothers. Great technical skills displayed by both men with the unexpected upset by Owen. Many things have been stated about this match, and very few have anything ill towards it.

Match 2: Steiner Brothers vs. Headshrinkers (Wrestlemania IX)

-This match holds dear in my heart because I used to mark over Rick and Scottie back in the day. These two were what I viewed as the underdogs of the tag division (mind you, I was 8 at this time). The agility Scott showed before his 'roids bulk up was very precise and good.

Match 3: Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle for the Intercontinental and European championships (Wrestlemania XVI)

-This was a great match due to the men involved and the skills displayed by all three men. The great technical displayed by two of the Lion's Den Frat House, and let's not forget Angle's contribution with his skill set. Jericho's agility furthered the match to another level.

Match 4: MITB Featuring Mr. Kennedy, Randy Orton, Finlay, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Edge, CM Punk, Booker T (Wrestlemania XXIII)

-This MITB showcased alot in my opinion. All but two of these men either went on to bigger and better pastures or had been a Seven time, Seven time, Seven time, Seven time, Seven time, Seven time, Seven time world champion. Among all of these men, there are 30 World titles that have been won, granted that is including the two ECW championships and 1 ROH title.

Match 5: The British Bulldogs vs. The Dream Team for the WWF Tag Team Championship(Wrestlemania II)

-If anyone hasn't seen this, they should.

Part Two:

Match 6: John Cena vs. The Big Show for the U.S. Championship (Wrestlemania XX)

-I see this as the true start of the Cena era in WWE. It wasn't long after this he did the principal shooting for the Marine, setting him up for the WWE Championship the following year. This match is more symbolic than anything.

Match 7: Hulk Hogan vs. Vince McMahon (Wrestlemania XIX)

-The only reason this match is in here is due to the stipulations set forth by Aaron, such as the WMI Tag match with Mr. T. If it were up to me, I would have had an earlier match from Hogan because now his whole career is tarnished like Ric Flair's since neither know when to quit.

Match 8: Triple H vs. Batista for the WWE Championship (Wreslemania XXI)

-Batista showed he could wrestle at this time, until his uneventful injuries. BTW Aaron, you should have included HHH in your list of required wrestlers.

Match 9: Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker (Wrestlemania XXV)
-I don't know what new can be said about this match. It was the best output of any match at any Wrestlemania, and it captivated a hellofa lot of people.
The only other match that had emotion like this was Ric Flair vs. HBK(but everyone knows this match was strictly selling a story, not the match itself), but alas this only allowed one HBK match.

Match 10: The Rock vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin for the WWF Championship (Wrestlemania XVII)

-The epitome of these two wrestlers was what this match was. The biggest swerve of all time happened during this match. I know that hitting him over and over
with a chair doesn't constitute the heel turn, but the shaking of hands with his mortal enemy Vince does. What better ending to Wrestlemania has there been from a storyline standpoint, not emotional like when Chris Benoit won. SCSA swerve pissed off a fuckload of people, and they turned in the next night to find out why in the hell he did that. Granted, all it did was plateau and added nothing new to the table after Triple H was injured, and on top of that the whole Invasion thing was going on, and we all know that wasn't worth a damn.

i think its not the image of benoit that sickens people from wrestlemania. its the closing shot of him being in the ring with his wife and kid that makes it a disgusting thing to watch. it may have been a great moment in time but when hindsight is 20/20 not so much.

This is Kenneth Uphoff speaking.

To Kennedyfan: Typo,dude. My bad.
To Guest1971: I personally believe that the major belts should be represented, and the Women's Title represents a division, so it should be represented. To each their own.
To Matt: I don't discount what Benoit did. People will never forgive him for that. However, I am able to dissociate Benoit the wrestler from Benoit the man. Instead of focusing on the negative, I choose to focus on his in-ring career. To paraphrase from my childhood: Cry a river, build a bridge, and get over it.

If you can't separate a man from his actions, you are not mature. The movie industry pays homage to D.W. Griffith, who made The Birth of a Nation, but also revolutionized cinema.

So please. Adults are talking.

Agreed! Who is this Kenneth Uphoff? Who is he to tell people to get over anything? Chris "I murdered my wife and child and took the coward's way out" Benoit doesn't deserve a single accolade anywhere.

We may be in the minority on this site, but we are certainly in the majority in the real world. Benoit is nothing more tha a cold blooded killer! THAT is his legacy!

I don't know about most people, but the main reason I can't stand to look at benoit is because the way he wrestled is what caused him to do the things he did, the many amount of headshots and the flying headbutts he did. All the German suplexs he did. His "make it look real" style is one of the reasons he and his family are not here, that and the massive amount of roids the man took.

Ugh more Benoit debate! Whether you choose to include him or not, I still find the Triple Threat match to be completely overrated. I know the fanboys got a woody from the Benoit/Eddie hug but seriously the general populace didn't care. Good match, not "all time greatest" or even close. I've rewatched it lately and don't see any way to rate it as highly as some do. It's all subjective however. If I had to do an all time list with no restrictions, there would be several Savage matches & several of HBK. Those two to me have brought the goods at Mania more than any others. Savage: vs. Steamboat, Hogan, Warrior & Flair; HBK: vs. Jericho, Vince, Angle, Cena, Flair & Taker.

Wow-This actually took a while to complete. I kept getting stumped after about 8 matches. But, here goes, in the order of which they appear on the card.

1. Money in the Bank Ladder Match Featuring: Rated RKO, The Hardyz, Finlay, King Booker, CM Punk, and Mr. Kennedy: WM 23

2. Vince McMahon vs. Shane McMahon in a Street Fight w/ Mick Foley as the Special Referee: WM X-Seven

3. Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Adoreable Adrian Adonis in a Hair vs. Hair Match in what is being billed as Pipers "Farewell Match.": WM III

4. Bret the Hitman Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin in a Submission Match with Ken Shamrock as the Special Referee: WM 13

5. WWE Womens Champion Trish Stratus vs. Micke James: WM 22

6. Macho King Randy Savage w/ Queen Sherri vs. The Ultimate Warrior in a Career Match: WM VII

7. WWE Champion Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar: WM XIX

8. Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock: WM X8

9. The Undertaker vs. Kane w/ Paul Bearer: WM XIV

10. World Heavyweight Champion Triple H vs. Chris Benoit vs. Shawn Michaels in a Triple Threat Match: WM XX

Outside of the crazy crowd reaction, the Trish/Mickie match is overrated. Mickie was already sloppy(something that people only seem to noticing now). You take them out of that building, and it's not the best WM woman match. The triple threat at WM XIX was more entertaining.

I absolutely LOVE how people are all like "get over the Benoit tragedy, yes he murdered his wife and kid, but his in ring work was great" but then they snub Flair/Michaels because the legacy of the match is "tarnished"" because Flair un-retired.

"First off, to the people who are offended by Benoit still, shut up. Move on."

Comments like this are why most people look down on wrestling fans as low-life scum. You ask "still offended?" as if he made a one-time racist comment or something. The guy KILLED HIS WIFE AND KID IN COLD BLOOD, then hung himself to escape justice. ALL of his past accomplishments are VOID as a result.

As many have rightly pointed out, the hypocrisy of these nerds is shocking - they will condemn someone like Flair for "tarnishing" his legacy by coming out of a (fake) retirement, or dismiss some mid-carder and laugh at him being 'future endeavoured' because he didn't have awesome mat skills, but when one of their fanboy internet workrate heroes is exposed as a pathetic murderer the apologists and douchebags (who are all disconnected from reality and probably don't have any meaningful relationships in real life) all come out screaming in defence of their beloved idol Benoit. Aaron Hubbard is one of the worst of all for this.

The irony of all of this is that Benoit WASN'T THAT GREAT. Yeah he was an awesome technical wrestler... in a fake "sport". He didn't really win any of those matches. He had no personality and never drew a dime. His "epic" title win led to defending against jobbers like Kane while the real big stars remained in the main event. The way he is remembered and glorified on a DAILY BASIS on this site is just ridiculous and spits in the face of the wife and child he brutally murdered. If there is a hell, Benoit is burning there right now.

Stop putting Benoit in these best of lists. They way he wrestled was the cause for him becoming a psychotic killer. You CANNOT seperate the wrestler from the person in this case. If Benoit would have wrestled a safe, low impact style,he maybe wouldn't have become the worst human being ever in the wrestling industry.

Wonder how many of these easily butt hurt folks own a Ford. Henry Ford was a Nazi sympathizer, yet you'd have no issue driving a Ford.

I've been over the Benoit incident for a long time. Yes he killed his family and for that he's scum. He also took the bitch way out by hanging himself.

However he existed, won titles, was involved with angles, and put on great matches. Smart marks, troll marks, easily butt hurt marks, the whole lot of you need to understand and separate Benoit the wrestler from Benoit on his last three days in this world.

Easily put: Get over it!

Heralding Benoit as "best of anything" means we applaud this risky, high impact style he used. We should not! As this style leads to injuries, substance abuse and (sometimes) insanity as in Benoits case. Do I like seeing the Mark Henry style of matches? Not really, but if it means the performer goes home in good health I am fine with it. Its better than a 5 star match after which both guys eat painkillers by the dozen. Stop praising Benoit for his style (and Dynamite kid as well...)

I simply stated that OJ Simpson was FOUND,(not IS) innocent. Let me repeat for the sake of clarity - FOUND innocent. Therefore it is completely unrelated to the murderer Benoit's situation! Nice try though.

To "The Truth":

Yeah, actually, I'm pretty sure Aaron Hubbard, a.k.a. ME is the only of the three there who didn't have Benoit on his card.

And I don't defend Benoit, who isn't my hero, and never was. You want to claim that I have irrational love for a wrestler with questionable morals? How about this: Stone Cold Steve Austin, a wifebeater, was probably the greatest wrestler of all time, because he drew money (like Hogan) and could wrestle great matches (unlike Hogan).

Oh, and my favorite wrestler of all time is Eddie Guerrero, whose drug issues are well publicized. So there.

I do not judge people on morality, for it is not my place. It's not your place either, because you're just a human. So grow up and move on in an adult manner, or shut up and let the rest of the world pity your pathetic irrational hatred for a man who is already dead.

To answer all the questions about Benoit, I am just a regular guy who Hubbard asked to help him with his column. To the Benoit haters-for-eternity, those are your opinions and you are entitled to them. I personally couldn't care less what you think. But whatever, troll on if you please. But for me in adult-land, I will list Benoit on anything I please , and if you don;t like it, don't freaking click on the article, you tards.

This. A million times over. I am so fucking sick of these smark assholes finding new ways to heap praise on Benoit The Family Killer.

Excuse me...no red rooster v.s. Bobby Heenan. What the fuck man? No Miller lite catfight girls. No Maven hardcore title defense? this list is a travesty..Kinda hard getting through that.Maybe you could expand your parameters and just fantasy book a whole card. There are hundreds of match combinations and you could go in all kinds of interesting directions. my main choice would be to have the Undertaker ressurect Chris benoit Eddy gurrero davey boy smith and owen hart to have a FATAL four way texas life match. the winner gets to live again , but only as Paul Bearer's but sex monkey

Do the words reading comprehension mean anything to you? Obviously you are too busy defending a cold blodded killer to realize what my post actually said.

I simply stated that OJ Simpson was FOUND,(not IS) innocent. Let me repeat for the sake of clarity - FOUND innocent. Therefore it is completely unrelated to the murderer Benoit's situation! Nice try though.

How about our own dream wrestlemania card but making our own matches with only the superstars that have competed at wrestlemania on more than one occasion. U can not use more than one wrestler twice. But u have to include one mitblm with 8 superstars and atleast 1 women's match. But no more than 12 matches. And both the WWE and world titles must b on the card with both title holders being actual champions at one point in there career. U can use past matches. Each card should be in ordervfrom opening match to main event. Each card can include no more than 2 gimmick matches that's including mitblm. each title holder must have been a champion at some point in there career. Those would b my rules.

Judge, I know more than you ever will. And just so you are educated, I happen to have a collection of 130 wrestling DVDs spanning WWE, TNA, and ROH. I would lower myself to your level, but I don't speak troll.

Hey hubbard seriously tho, next week instead of coming up with a fun, different article for people to participate in.... you might as well just have your next column titled "To rant and rave about how horrible Chris benoit was and how horrible it is to include him in anything....click here"

We are tryin to make an ultimate wrestlemania dream card people, a fun idea in my opinion. If i or anyone else want to include benoit then we will.

My dream card! Stacked top to bottom with a good blend of the best superstars from each era ending in about 2000 or 2001. I don't feel that any of the current stars RKO, Cena, Batista,Punk have put on the epic matches worthy of making my dream card which is why those names are not present!

1. WM 19: Rock V. S. Austin
2. WM 10: Bret Hart V. Owen Hart
3. WM 16: Euro Title Triple Threat Benoit V. Y2J V. K. Angle
4. WM 21: Rey M. V. Eddie G.
5. WM 1 15K Body Slam Challenge: Big John Studd V. Andre The Giant
6. WM 3: I.C. Title Macho Man V. Ricky Steamboat
7. WM 17: Undertaker V. HHH
8. WM 26: Tag Title TLC Hardy V. Dudleys V. Edge & Christian
9. WM 24: The Retirement Match HBK V. Flair
10.WM 6: WWF Title Hulk Hogan V. Ultimate Warrior

Good job including Benoit on the list. The guy sacrificed his health, his sanity, and his family all in the name of pro wrestling.

10. Big show vs Cena WM 20- For star power only, cena still sucks, just like this match but the ideas iof a dream card is to make it appealing to everyone. So this would make the kids happy.
9.Vince vs Shane WM X-7- Very entertaining brawl, plus Vince created the show soo he atleast deserves a spot on the dream card.
8.Undertaker vs Orton WM 21- The best match of the strek up to that point, Orton looked loke he was poised to win, which made the outcome very questionable.
7.3 way ladder match WM 2000- The most important match of all 6 mens carrer, in terms of putting them on the map
6.Ultimate Warrior vs HHH WM 12- Both of them are big stars, and every great cards NEEDS a squash match, the fact that it's HHH being burried in a filler match makes it that much greater.
5.HBK vs Vince WM 22- Shawn can get a good match out of any one, and he provs it right here.
4.Savage vs Flair WWF Championship- I wanted to put Savage/steamboat, because it was the better match, but the rule said 2 2 world championship matches, so I went with this cause it has 2 all time greats in teir primes, putting on a spectacle.
3.Brock vs Angle WM 19 WWE Championship- 2 of the best amature wrestlers ever put on a clinic, this shows the greatness of Kurt Angle as he put on this 5 star match with a BROKEN FRICKEN NECK.
2.Bret vs Austin WM 13- This is the greatest match ever, it took Steve Austin from being a hot comodity, and launched him in to another stratusphere. Kudos for Bret in making this match what it was, the unofficial start of the Attitude Era.
1.The Rock vs Hogan WM 18- While #2 was the better match I chose this match as the main event over the championship matches for 3 reasons. 1 Hogan made the event what it was & he deserves the main event, and The Rock never got his moment to close a WM with his hand raised in victory. 2 it's the greatest crowd reaction of any match ever. And 3 It's the correction of the ultimate blunder, not letting it close @ WM 18.

The above list was because to me a dream card is not only about great matches but also about star power (hence Cena/Show). This card has almost every big name of the past 20 years. Oh and a correction, replace vince/shane with NOA vs Foley & Funk WM 14(This was pretty entertaining, and better than it should of been, plus whats a dream card without Foley), sorry I just realixed I put vince on 2wice.

1. Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio, Wrestlemania 21
2. ECW Originals (Rob Van Dam, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer, and The Sandman) vs. The New Breed (Elijah Burke, Kevin Thorn, Marcus Cor Von, and Matt Striker), Wrestlemania 23
3. European title, Triple H vs. Owen Hart, Wrestlemania XIV
4. WWF tag team titles, The British Bulldogs vs. The Dream Team, Wrestlemania 2
5. Floyd "Money" Mayweather vs. The Big Show, Wrestlemania 24
6. The Rock 'n' Sock Connection (The Rock and Mick Foley) vs. Evolution (Ric Flair, Batista, and Randy Orton), Wrestlemania XX
7. Submission match, Bret "Hit Man" Hart vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Wrestlemania 13
8. WWE title, Kurt Angle vs. Brock Lesnar, Wrestlemania XIX
9. Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker, Wrestlemania 25
10. WWF title, Randy "Macho Man" Savage vs. Hulk Hogan, Wrestlemania V

Reserving the right to change up my own card, I would like to remove the ECW Originals vs New Breed match from Wrestlemania 23, and replace it with the Andre the Giant vs. Big John Studd $15,000 bodyslam match from the first Wrestlemania. Not a technical classic by any means, but a legend like Andre the Giant deserves to be on this card in some form, plus the crowd was really into that match.

I like the rules because the point of the whole exercise is to make a challenging puzzle. Involving Rock and Austin is tough wrinkle since they only had a few Wrestlemania matches and most of them involved each other and/or titles. The only rule I'm discounting is that there have to be two world title matches. No point in that since wrestling sucks with two world titles. Anyway:

Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart
IC Title: Razor Ramon vs. Jeff Jarrett
Strike Force vs. Brainbusters
Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle
Undertaker vs. Kane
Tag Title Ladder Match: Edge & Christian vs. Dudley Boys vs. Hardy Boys
Steve Austin vs. Savio Vega
Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho
WWF Title: Randy Savage vs. Ric Flair
Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock

Okay, I stayed stricty with in the rules. My first priority was getting the best mathes, my second was to get as many of the big stars as possible, So here it is.
10. Tito Santana vs the Executioner WM 1- The very first match in WM history, a pretty good effort from Tito. **1/2
9. Trish vs Victoria vs Jazz WM 19- If you have to see one women's match @ mania it's this one. 3 of the best workers from the division put on a very good match. ***
8. Kane vs Big Show vs Raven Hardcore Championship WM 17- A very good brawl on a stacked card, which tends to get over look. Had a great ending. ***
7. Triangular ladder match WM 2000- Three of the best tag teams of the era put on the greatest ladder match in history up to that point. *****
6. HHH vs Orton vs Cena WWE championship WM 24- A very good match featuring 3 of the premier stars in the company, a good endig with the heel unexpectedly getting the win. ***1/2
5. Undertaker vs Batista World Heavyweigt Championship WM 23- The best big man match I have ever seen @ mania. ****
4. Kurt Angle vs HBK WM 22- This matcfh is the defenition of Wrestling Clinic. *****
3. Macho Man vs Ricky Steamboat WM 3- Enough Said. *****
2. Stone Cold vs Bret Hart WM 13- The greatest, and arguably most important match in WWE history. *****
1. The Rock vs Hulk Hogan WM 18- The most epic DREAM MATCH of all time, gets the main event because the only way to get the crowd to react after seeing Angle/HBK, Savage/Steamboat, and Austin/Hart is by having this at the end. *****
