Match A Day 03.17.10: Week 48 - Wrestlers Who Don't Deserve Their Pushes
Posted by Jake Chambers on 03.17.2010
Some wrestlers win titles, main events shows year after year, and earn the spotlight given to them by the company they work for… but I don’t care about them! This week I watch matches featuring some of those wacky wrestlers who have a gotten ‘pushed’ by their company but definitely were way too lame to deserve it!
Previously on Match A Day:
- Wow, was Wrestlemania 25 ever bad! After months of theorizing the demise of modern mainstream pro-wrestling in my old column Wacky Wrestling Theory, I decided to stop letting the big companies tell me how and what I was going to enjoy! Sure, I'll never be able to give up watching WWE, in some way, but I'm certainly no longer going to watch it every week and buy into their hype and bullshit! Nope, from now on I'm just watching one match a day. Classic or recent, but on my own terms and at my own speed!
- I revealed to the MAD readers that I am straight edge, just like our pal CM Punk, and that I never drink alcohol, do drugs or smoke cigarettes. And yes, the cliché is true, that makes me better than you!
- At first when my friend from back home, Eddie, move here to Seoul, South Korea, I thought he just wanted to hang out… but then I discovered he was selling his own experimental new drug called Madness!
- I'm not doing the drug of course, but I did fold pretty quickly when I needed some money and Eddie cut me in on his business if I would store some of his stash at my place. So… I may not be better than you anymore… but I am getting rich!
And now MAD Week 48 can begin…
Wrestlers Who Don't Deserve Their Pushes
1. AJ Styles
I think one man can only go so far with a Pele kick and some good vertical leaping ability, and AJ Styles has milked that for as much as he possibly could at this point. I mean, he's been the NWA/TNA champion like 20 times already, and no one seems to have noticed or cared. This column isn't about whether I like said wrestler or not, as in AJ's case I'm a huge fan of his matches, but I'm not sure he's deserved his multiple main event title reigns in TNA.
Mostly I blame TNA's bad booking, as they don't seem to be able to successfully book ‘new' world champions (as in guys who haven't been franchise title holders in other companies before) having botched reigns by Christian, Samoa Joe and the many restarts of AJ Styles. While the AJ of four years ago seemed to be ready to explode, the AJ Styles of 2009 was starting to feel more like a veteran who couldn't crossover rather than a young up-and-comer. So, that's why I don't think he really deserved to get his push (although beating Sting at a TNA Bound for Glory hardly seems like a platform for superstardom at this point anyways) in late 2009.
The closest comparison I can think of to the personality deficient yet stylistically fantastic AJ is Chris Benoit. but he was able to cultivate a dry personality based on his connection to the Four Horsemen and later his full-on competitive nature whereas Styles still continues to struggle with his continually shifting character; is he a chickenshit, is he an adrenaline junky, is he a goofball or a hero? And frankly, I've never been convinced of the success of any of these personalities. So to think that this guy is a franchise performer on the level of John Cena or Randy Orton is silly, since both of those guys started out with less hype and fan interest and in less time turned into exponentially bigger stars than Styles without all the character retooling. How many more times is TNA going to recreate AJ Styles until they have finally destroyed his total worth?
Match #325 – Sunday, February 21st
TNA Title: AJ Styles vs. Kurt Angle [TNA Genesis, January 2010]
Look no further than this match! TNA turned Styles heel along with the un-retired Ric Flair at his side in a surprise so predictable by the end of the match that even the fact that ANT is TNA spelled backwards was not longer amusing. The ‘new' direction of TNA is a joke. The new regime ‘threw out' the format and gave the viewers this re-run main event of the live TNA Impact main event from a week previous, only this time instead of a clean finish they ‘shock' no one with the kind of horribly telegraphed, interference-ending that made WCW infamous. The new Bischoff/Hogan booked TNA has about as much change in it as Obama's America, as this groundbreaking match was a rehash of a pay-per-view feud from two years ago, and it wasn't even that great then! The best thing about the WCW-ization of TNA is that the influx of new old guys will lead the good wrestlers straight into the open arms of the WWE, please come Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels and hopefully AJ too, before it's too late.
2. John Morrison
I've often expressed in this column, when it comes to John Morrison matches, just adding a few twists to your moves does not make for innovation as the WWE announcers would have your believe. While Morrison has had some good matches, his personality is so dull as I think most would concur at this point that The Miz was the pepper to Morrison's salt in that team. Like Jeff Hardy, who is a good comparison, Morrison can bounce and has a slightly flamboyant look yet he doesn't have Hardy's inherent passion for the art of pro-wrestling, specifically his athletic display of a true desire to win. In Morrison's case, I just don't feel like he cares whether he wins or loses, and thus there is no reason to push him as a winner. I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this, as the much more intense Drew McIntyre won this day's match in order to capture the Intercontinental Title at the TLC pay-per-view.
Match #326 – Monday, February 22nd
Intercontinental Title Match: John Morrison vs. Drew McIntyre [WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, December 2009]
3. Mike Quackenbush
This is a tough one, because Mike Quackenbush as the producer, booker, designer and trainer of all things CHIKARA is just an absolute industry hero who has provided so much to the indy landscape in the past few years in the US that it's almost not an indy scene anymore. The man should be absolutely applauded for his contributions to the pro-wrestling world, his boundless creativity and his guidance to a new generation of stars who don't happen to be born (or drugged) to look like bodybuilders. That being said, there is something I just can't get into about his wrestling character. His weird campy speaking voice, his uncomfortably dorky baggy pants and spandex t-shirt combo, his doofy haircut, and his impressive yet patronizing posture, are all detrimental to his near main-event status on that aforementioned indy scene. Compliments to his humbleness, Quackenbush hasn't booked himself as the top star of his promotion, yet still he has an aura in pro-wrestling that doesn't seem to fit his performances. I'm being nitpicky really, because he is good I just don't think he's amazing as a wrestler. Regardless, on this day I watched a pretty great singles match he had against Claudio Castagnoli.
Match #327 – Tuesday, February 23rd
Mike Quackenbush vs. Claudio Castagnoli [Ted Petty Invitational, 2nd Round 2006]
4. Undertaker (original)
The wisdom to hitch the WWF/E onto the back of the Undertaker has been a wise one, but I didn't think at the time of his initial babyface push that the Undertaker deserved such success. He was slow, boring and had a terrible outfit, although a lot of what was going on around 1993 WWF was pretty wacked out, the zombie gravedigging Undertaker seemed particularly dumb.
While there is no doubting the overall brilliant career of the Undertaker, one does have to question if he is really as big a star as we think he is? With all the maeg-pushes given the Undertaker in his career he has still never achieved the crossover success of Hogan, Austin or The Rock, and that's got to make you wonder if it was worth it? If all that promotional energy had been put into another guy… like say the brilliant Goldust… then maybe they would have hit that rarefied air of mainstream superstardom that the Undertaker has ascended to.
Match # 328 – Wednesday, February 24th
Undertaker vs. Papa Shango [WWF Invasion of the BodySlammers, 1993]
There was no cooler foil for the early good-guy Undertaker than the iconic Papa Shango, although house show style matches like this one are as good as their small recorded rivalry ever achieved. I think you can see from this match some of what I disliked about the Undertaker back then, he was so, his moves looked awkward, his clothes looked particularly silly, his hair was too red, and he seemed too stiff. And the whole ‘no-selling' gimmick with the power of the urn to revive him was just too wacky to believe it would be popular.
5. Yoshihiro Takayama
The big hulking dullard Takayama has never excited me, even in his prime, but his recent slew of big wins and main events has absolutely dumbfounded me. He recently challenged the fantastic Shinsuke Nakumura in New Japan's Tokyo Dome show, and killed the heat on the companies biggest night of the year, then he won NOAH's 2010 Global Tag Tournament in some of the most underwhelming fashion, along with having reigned for almost half a year as the All Japan Triple Crown champion until finally losing it to Satoshi Kojima in today's match. That is high profile roles in the top three companies in the Japan in less than six months, and all of them sucked! I understand that he had one of the greatest MMA punch-outs of all time with Don Frye, but c'mon, his wrestling matches today are horrible and he definitely doesn't deserve this recent push based on his excitement value or workrate. So I was pretty happy to see him lose the All Japan championship, but out of all the guys on this list this week, he's the one I'm begging while get a de-push!
Match #329 – Thursday, February 25th
All Japan Triple Crown Championship Match: Yoshihiro Takayama vs. Satoshi Kojima [All Japan, September 2009]
6. Tyler Black
I don't know how one match with Bryan Danielson in early 2007 led to such a massive push for Tyler Black that, even though he lost, he was being touted as the next ROH world champion almost immediately afterwards. That was a good match, but is Tyler Black ready to learn how to be a star as a champion? ROH never booked itself like a developmental territory but putting Tyler Black into the main event scene sure makes it feel that way. He has been in some truly awesome matches, yet so have guys like Delirious, Jimmy Jacobs, Colt Cabana and Claudio Castagnoli, but Tyler gets all the hype and main event push. Like in this match…
Match #330 – Friday, February 26th
ROH World Title, 4-Way: Austin Aries vs. Tyler Black vs. Jerry Lynn vs. Nigel McGuinees [ROH Death Before Dishonor VII: Night One, July 2009]
Although he didn't win the title here, Black did steal a lot of the spotlight from the other stars who mostly out worked him. While I will give him credit for energizing audiences, they are ROH audiences (and in this case, Canadians!) who cannot be trusted considering they will turn on any smark fan favorite the minute they hit their peak. So to push the still rough draft version of Tyler Black superstar to the sky based mainly on the live reactions he gets from these specific fans seems iffy to me.
7. RVD
Looking back, it's gotta be pretty embarrassing that the WWE sent John Cena into a room full of hostile smark-high ECW fans to lose the WWE Title to this guy. In the end, Cena gets the respect for not showing any intimidation and going with the flow while RVD gets lambasted for being a burnout and resting on his laurels. Unlike Chris Jericho, who for a few years the WWE might have regretted giving the honor of being the first ever Unified World Champion, his comeback and commitment to professional wrestling has proven their foresight in his case to be correct. RVD is a stain upon the legacy of the WWE Title, an out of shape, out-dated gimmick who was given the opportunity of a lifetime and chose to wrestle like it was just another match. And while I don't really care about the subsequent drug case that caused the WWE to take his title, in comparison to Jeff Hardy who also had similar circumstances in his career, at least he always displayed real emotion in his matches and made it look like he cared about winning rather than just getting paid.
Match #331 – Saturday, February 27th
Stretcher Match: Rob Van Dam vs. Sabu [ECW, August 1996]
On the other hand, there is this match that displayed just why pushing Rob Van Dam… in 1996… was a good idea! He was daring, dangerous and anti-establishment, and was creating an inferno of buzz for an ECW that was in danger of fading away at that time. This Stretcher Match with Sabu was incredible at the time and stands up today as still being pretty extreme, especially since the emotion and respect issue between the two made for such an intense rivalry. I'm sure if this RVD had been involved in 2006 instead of the caricature he became, then the WWE wouldn't be so ashamed of the wasted mega-push they gave him.
This was just a short list of some, ‘wrestlers who don't deserve their pushes.' Check out my Twitter account this week where I will be adding some more names to that list! Join in the fun!
Again… not much to add this week about my personal life. Just another week and a bit more extra cash to call my own. Everything seems to be going smoothly at this point… just waiting for something to go wrong… but so far, it's all good!
WTF???? you are really jumping the shark with your theories. Csonka please fire this idiot!!!! it is not even funny anymore!!!!!!

Wow! That's a disappointing list. No Drew McIntyre, Erik Watts, Ashley Massaro, damn near anyone who got where they are by being friends with "higher ups". While I agree with some of your choices (Tyler Black), your arguements for some don't make sense.
Posted By: Jaime (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 01:03 PM
i love how you throw in indy slops, future stars and fat japanese nobodies all into this mix of bad writing bait. all while hoping you get a negative reaction.

What's the over/under on how many times I'll be mentioned in the Comments section for this?

Seriously you think Goldust would of had mainstream crossover if he was pushed?
What are you smoking?
Posted By: gcarn (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 01:33 PM
Taker vs. Papa Shango at Mania 9 would've been light years better than Taker vs. Giant Gonzalez.
Posted By: VIPER (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 01:46 PM
CMON!Really? Mike Q? He is along with Danielson the best techinal guy around here.
if something he deserves to be pushed

Well only four more of these columns and its over.

"Seriously you think Goldust would of had mainstream crossover if he was pushed?
What are you smoking?"
Goldust was a highly underrated performer, particularly early on in the gimmick, when it was clear that Dustin still had a passion for it. I don't know about crossover appeal, but he's definitely a name I would have liked to see get a real shot in his prime.

This was interesting and you made some controversial statements.
I don't agree with everything you said, but I like some of your talking points for calling out some of these overated stars.
Good article Jake.

The title "Wrestlers or Aspects of Wrestlers that I, Jake Chambers, Personally do not Care for," would seem far more appropriate for this article.

Hi there, first time reader here.
And that's how it'll stay.
Posted By: Waldo (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 02:40 PM
Awful column. I m wrestling fan since 1993 and no other than The Undertaker make me fan of WWF. In early 90-ties he was the ultimate babyface ,invincible guardian and avenger ti all monster in WWE.
Morrisson also is quite talented guy with good wrestling abyility.
Posted By: HEIDENREICH (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 02:50 PM
Stop everyone needs to click that UT/Shango match just to hear the Ross/Macho/Brain commentary... awesome. Really shows you how pathetic today's commentary work is.
The only thing that really stinks about the match is Taker's indestructible situps about 2/3 of the way in. Get rid of that and the match is better than most of Taker's Wrestlemania matches.
Posted By: Save.Us_Y2J (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 03:39 PM
Mike Quackenbush > all.
Posted By: Guest#3934 (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 03:41 PM
Uhhh, Morrison is pretty awesome in the ring and it's not like the guy is being pushed to the moon right now. You'll be all up on his nutsack in a year's time, mark my words dummy!

And we're back to Chmabers proper/troll mode. I swear, this guy is like the RVD of 411: sometimes he busts out great columns and other times there's stinkers like this one. Watching how his writing will turn out has become more fascinating than the subject matter itself. What's the over/under that we get a serious column again next week?
Sure you ain't let down your sxe guard and started dipping into your own supply?

Posted By: No (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 03:57 PM
Wonderfully terrible article. Well done crap.
As noted in a previous comment, Goldust was one of those guys who could have been big but never clicked enough.
Goldust's one lacking area back then was his fitness. He was kind of blubbery back then. If he was as fit then as his is now, he could have stepped out of his dad's shadow.
Posted By: Guest#1021 (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 06:36 PM
I don't know which is worse, the writing or the thought behind it. This is terrible.
Posted By: Guest (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 06:40 PM
Seriously, this list does indeed suck the proverbial ass. What about pretty much any "Diva Search" contestant other than (maybe) Candice Michelle?
Posted By: Guest#5713 (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 06:43 PM
I think there are a lot of guys less deserving of bigger pushes than the ones on your list. Lex Luger was horrible but was world champ, Bobby Lashley had no personality, Chris Masters got a push for some unknown reason, etc. You seem to be less criticizing who the companies push and more attacking who you think is overrated on the internet.
Posted By: KenB3 (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 06:51 PM
Drew Mcintire,The spirit Squad,Shaemus, any Diva who posed for playboy, duece and domino,Michelle mcCool,Maryse........none of these deserved the push they got.

i find it hard to believe you had this opinion of the 'brilliant' golddust when he first debuted and was crushing on razor ramon

"Ashley Massaro"
Posted By: Jaime (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 01:03 PM
When was she ever pushed? She never won any titles to show for it.
Posted By: Guest#7732 (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 07:32 PM
I agree about Tyler Black, but thats about it. Mike Quackenbush isn't even pushed much by most companies so I can't say I agree about that one. Although he's been NWA World Light heavyweight champion for way too long. Its been nearly 2 years and he's only defended the belt like a dozen times. He doesn't need to be holding onto it for so long.

Gotta agree with the critics on this one. John Morrison has no personality? Undertaker didn't deserve his push? AJ Styles? You may not be a fan, but you're missing some of the really big names who deserved to be on this list:
Lex Luger
Paul Roma (cue the flame war)
Bob Backlund in the mid 90's
X Pac / Syxx
Mr Ass, King of the Ring
King Mabel
Chavo Guerrero post Eddie's death
Posted By: Ray Church (Guest) on March 17, 2010 at 08:53 PM
a. Crossover/outside the industry success
means nothing. Is The Rock more
important to wrestling than Bruno? I
think not.
b. How do you not mention Jesus? That
guy gets such a push every December
and what's he done in the last 2000
years? Plus, his comes backs are
worse than Hogan's.

Wrestlers who Don't Deserve Pushes
1- Claudio Castagnioli
2- Abyss (this version freak Abyssmania)
3- Sabu
4- Chavo Guerrero Jr
5- Bobby Lashley
6- Randy Orton
7- William Regal
8- JOHN CENA (in this moment)
9- Hulk Hogan
10- Shannon Moore
11- Mike Tenay
12- Sheamus
See you !!!

Actually really liked this article again. The only point I would disagree with you on is Mike Quakenbush. I HATE him as a wrestler, love him as an author and booker and trainer. However I don't ever see him really being pushed anywhere, thus eliminating his contention from this list. And to all the people saying Luger and Lashley and others, remember this list is not complete. Jake probably wanted to save us from reading the same Luger bashing we all have heard ad nausem.

wow this guy is stupid.so he thinks the great kahli, bobby lashly, jeff hardy.I can keep going on this list.but they all deserved it more than rvd and aj.I don't think so rvd is one of the best wrestlers ever and is the most innovative current wrestler.and aj definately earned what he got.meybe not all his reigns but he deserves what he is getting now.you talk about a guy having way to many tittles reigns and you don't mention john cena.wtf are you on.cena isn't half the wrestler aj is all he has over aj is charisma but lots of people have that and still don't get shots.look at christian.way more charisma and better mike skills than cena.your such an idiot you should be fired because your obviously just a wwe mark.
Posted By: ? (Guest) on March 18, 2010 at 12:02 AM
I think Taker didn't have the crossover success because you really have to look at his gimmick, its not realistic in any way at all. Hogan a tough guy that lives and feeds of the crowd, Austin a badass anti-her, The Rock a smart mouthed good looking atheltic jock. The Undertaker a dead guy that can't be beat and draws his power from an urn. As soon as you start using the Taker in mainstream outlets it destroys his awe and mystery. His biker gimmick time could have been a window for mainstream but it wasn't really needed was it?

issac q id have to say i agree with everything you have said besides two names. Cluadio Castignoli, hes the fuckin shit man, he deserves to be pushed to the moon! And randy orton. other than that your pretty deadon, the abyss a mania thing is the worst thing in wrestling today. I like the guy and have met him, but when i see him on tv i think "hi im abyss im really big so i dont have to work out anymore," seriously wit the push hes getting he needs to tone up a little

McCool deserves it for being one of the hottest women ever. The reason she comes out to no reactions is because people are too busy jerking off to her. Her sexy, southern accent is like hearing orgasms. She is fucking hot.
Posted By: Guest#1158 (Guest) on March 18, 2010 at 03:31 AM
wow. I mean, jeez, that really is a great list. Taker was definitely given an unreasonable push during the early part of his career. Takayama knows how to crumble after taking a 100 fists to the face. As for RVD, he's the while fcking botch machine.
Chambers, glad you finally said no to medication. Keep writing.
Posted By: christy (Guest) on March 18, 2010 at 03:35 AM
So 'taker didn't deserve his push because he didn't obtain the same level of success as the 3 most popular superstars in the history of the business? What a load of ...!
And yes his gimmick does seem a bit wacky now and his matches were dull (how you're supposed to have stellar matches as a no-selling, slow moving zombie is beyond me) but 'taker was over from the moment he stepped into a WWE arena, there was a sense of awe that no other wrestler had given before, so in that sense the gimmick was perfect for him.
Posted By: Shane (Guest) on March 18, 2010 at 04:50 AM
So AJ Styles, the same guy that practically carried TNA on his back the first 5 years, has been involved in alot of TNA's best ever matches and (despite what some internet "experts" will tell you) is still very over with TNA's fanbase is undeserving of his push!? AJ is a FOUR (Not 20) time NWA/TNA World Champion because he's capable of putting on good to great matches with anyone...hell, put him in the ring with a comatose guy and he'll get a three star match out of him, and because the fans...ya know...WANT IT!
You may not do drugs...but check the house for gas leaks or something, cause you've clearly been inhaling or sniffing something.

Thats spot on...
Also I think people are misunderstanding the use of the word push here...
Scrubs like Paul Roma and Erik Watts never had a main event push... Mabel never really had one either, he was built up to be defeated by Nash etc etc etc.... But we live in a wrestlecrap/botchamania world anymore so people who weren't even an itch in their daddy's pants when some stuff went down simply regurgitate what they read on websites as gospel truth...

Posted By: Peter (Guest) on March 18, 2010 at 07:19 AM
He's absolutely dead on with his assessment of AJ Styles. TNA just keeps re-gimmicking and re-gimmicking the guy until he's just dead in the water. Put the title on someone else and give them a shot.

"McCool deserves it for being one of the hottest women ever. The reason she comes out to no reactions is because people are too busy jerking off to her. Her sexy, southern accent is like hearing orgasms. She is fucking hot.

McRibs is hot? Boy, you need to get off the crack pipe. She looks like a teenage boy with implants.

"When was she ever pushed? She never won any titles to show for it.

True, she didn't actually win a title but she had a title match in one of the WORST matches in WM history. She makes the Bella twins look competent.

terrible column....
i have to say your retarded....
first off aj styles.....
hes been with the company for about 9 years....hes easily the most popluar wrestler there...and the kid has skill...
so what makes him not deserving???
cause if its his wrestling style or average mic skills then you could easily add Rey Mysterio and Jeff Hardy to that list.....
Now RVD.....so he didnt deserve it.....huh.....he was only the most over guy in the company.....years prior he took the game HHH to the limit and should have won the title then...
Hes on of the best and most exciting in ring athletes in the world.....he creates and innovates moves instead of just using what everyone else uses.....
hes more than paid his dues...over 15 years pro....
i mean you want to talk about people who dont deserve the title.....look at john cena....he may deserve it now...but he didnt when he got it....and he definitely doesn't deserve to have as many reigns as he does...
let alone 2 main event victories at wrestlemania....
ill admit hes much improved now and i can call him a good wrestler now.....
but when he got his push he was slow...stale.....didnt have many moves and his matches sucked......It wasn't till the so called undeserving RVD and ECW came along that he was anything special.....
without that rvd match cena would still be getting booed out of arena with you cant wrestle chants....
which brings me to batista.......he has no skill...hes dull....hes had far to many title reigns....and hes been here as long as cena but he hasnt improved...
and ill end it with the Great Kahli....
no explination needed.......

TNA fanbase = 1000 people living in Florida.
Good list bro. Don't forget that eight-foot dildo Syco Sid. Brutus Beefcake was beyond wack too. And even though he's a legend, Andre was a fatass who could hardly walk or pull any moves. Backlund second time around MUST be the absolute worst though...

Umm I guess people forgot about Brian Kendrick and Paul London being undfeated for like a year.

How the fuck did you leave Mizanin off your list? He is THE most undeserving piece of shit cocksucker walking the planet. You really are a dipshit, aren't you Chambers?

Remember when I said you're last column was the worst I'd ever seen on this site? This one just beat it on the list. Are you simply going for a negative reaction or are you really an idiot?

"At first when my friend from back home, Eddie, move here to Seoul, South Korea, I thought he just wanted to hang out… but then I discovered he was selling his own experimental new drug called Madness!"
You're trying so very, very hard. This all reminds me of a really crappy sitcom - you know like "Cybil" or "Geena" or some other crap that hits you over the said saying "like me, like me".
This guy is wacky! And he's mad! Oh wow!
Please end this rubbish.

nice to see youre still writing shit based solely on the fact of wanting people to respond to your wriiting. thank god im at work and wasting somebody else's time instead of my own. taker was slow and plodding? THAT WAS HIS FUCKIN GIMMICK. the fans practically demanded that rvs get the title so they gave it to him. cena is smarter than he looks, and what choice did he have anyway. all in all try writing something impressive instead of just stirring shit up
