411Mania’s Countdown to WrestleMania XXVI 03.19.10: Top 20 WrestleMania Moments
Posted by Shawn S. Lealos on 03.19.2010
WrestleMania is much more than just a professional wrestling card. It is the biggest stage in the world of wrestling and has been filled with some of the most memorable moments in wrestling history. Join Shawn S. Lealos as he counts down the biggest and best moments in the history of WrestleMania, from the breakout of Stone Cold Steve Austin to the reconciliation of The Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth.
Welcome to the end of Week 1 of 411's countdown to WrestleMania 26. My name is Shawn S. Lealos and this is my first year to contribute to this countdown where I will be giving you my Top 20 Favorite WrestleMania Moments. This is not a match countdown, but an overall look at the moments that stand out in my mind to be the highlights of the biggest PPV of them all. It can be a special moment on the card, an appearance by someone, a moment in a match or the entire match itself.
Without any further ado let's get into the list.
WrestleMania IX: Hulk Hogan beats Yokozuna for the World Championship
The reason this match is listed here is because this moment, while huge for "Hulkamaniacs", was proof Hulk Hogan was finished in the WWF. The fact that Hogan won the title to begin with is ridiculous. Hogan had returned to help his buddy Brutus Beefcake and lost in a World Tag Team Championship match earlier on the card to Money Inc. In the main event, Bret Hart defended his World Championship against Yokozuna, a wrestler built to be an unstoppable monster. Yokozuna won the match and was ready to become the next giant monster champion when Hulk Hogan ran down. Mr. Fuji agreed to let his wrestler defend the title then and there and Hogan beat Yokozuna in 21 seconds to win the title. Hogan should never have won the title here and it almost killed the threat Yokozuna presented in the WWF.
WrestleMania 22: Edge Goes Hardcore
Ever since he joined up with Christian, Edge had always been seen as a comic act. Even when he split off on his own and became one of the best heels in the WWE, he was still more cocky, arrogant and opportunistic than dangerous in the ring. He was a multi-time champion but never more than just a chicken shit heel in the right place at the right time. Then something beautiful happened. Mick Foley and Edge started a feud that did more to elevate Edge's career than any feud up to that point. I always knew Edge could go with the best of them. All you needed to watch was the tag team battles he and Christian had with The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boys to see he was fearless. But Mick Foley spent the road to WrestleMania pointing out Edge cared more about messing around than actually wrestling. After all the promos by Foley, we ended up with a match that proved Edge was as hardcore as anyone and this match was a master course in how to put over a younger talent by Foley. When Edge speared Foley through the flaming table, he took the next step in his career to awesomeness.
WrestleMania 21: Money in the Bank I
One of the best WrestleMania specialty matches going today is Money in the Bank. The holder of the briefcase has gone on to cash in his briefcase to win the championship every year, making it one of the few actual guarantees in wrestling today. The winners of the match have been Edge (beat Cena), Rob Van Dam (beat Cena), Mr. Kennedy (lost the case to Edge, who beat Undertaker), and C.M. Punk twice (beat Edge, beat Jeff Hardy). I am listing the first event here because (1) it was the one that started it all and (2) it proved how great the concept was. The storyline was that Chris Jericho pitched the idea to then General Manager Eric Bischoff and he agreed to the match. The bout featured some great moments including the awesome spot where Shelton Benjamin used the ladder as a ramp, running up and hitting a clothesline to Jericho. It was a fantastic match and has led to great sequels at every WrestleMania since.
WrestleMania V: The Mega Powers Implode
The biggest feud in professional wrestling during this time was the implosion of the Mega Powers. Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage were the two biggest stars in the WWF and when they teamed up with Miss Elizabeth by their side, they couldn't be beat. Of course, all it takes to bring down an Empire is the will of a woman. Anytime Hogan was friendly towards Elizabeth, Savage would lose it. Savage continuously came to Elizabeth's rescue while letting Hogan get beat down and after a win where Hogan got a little too touchy feely with her, Jesse Ventura riled up Savage's jealousy. The split finally came when Savage was thrown onto Elizabeth, knocking her out in a tag team match. Hogan picked her up and carried her to the back, leaving Savage alone for several minutes. Hogan returned, Savage slapped him in the face and the team was irreparable. Elizabeth refused to take a side and Hogan ended up beating Savage in this match for the World Championship. The match was great (especially for Hogan) but the entire back story was what made it unforgettable.
WrestleMania 21: John Cena and Batista Become Superstars
I have been looking at wrestling lately and realized what is missing. In the eighties, there was Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper. Then Randy Savage stepped up to the plate and stood on even ground with Hogan. Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart stood toe-to-toe in the nineties as equals. Then in the awesome years of the Attitude Era, The Rock and Steve Austin were the top dogs. When I watched a match where Steve Austin ran into the ring and faced off with The Rock, it was enough to send chills up my spine. It was the biggest stars in the sport going toe-to-toe and you never knew who was going to come out on top. These days there doesn't seem to be those "Superstars" with a capital "S". While watching the road to this year's WrestleMania, there are two stars treated like actual Superstars. Those men are Batista and John Cena and WrestleMania 21 is where it all began.
Batista was a part of Evolution and the fans were solidly behind him when he turned his back on Triple H and set his eyes on Hunter's title. Over on Smackdown John Cena defeated Kurt Angle to earn a shot at JBL's title and the matches for WrestleMania were set. It had been one year since WrestleMania had the heartwarming moment of two young superstars winning their respective belts (see #10) and this might be seen as a redo. While the winners of WrestleMania XX were the young blood Internet fans loved, the two men who won this year were prototypical WWE superstars, big, strong men, homegrown in the developmental system. The two men were the newest main event stars and they have never looked back.
WrestleMania X-Seven: Stone Cold turns heel and joins Vince McMahan
If any two wrestlers feuds were based almost solely around WrestleMania, it was Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. They were the two biggest stars of the Attitude Era and when they fought it had to be on the grandest stage of them all. In total, the two men faced off at three different WrestleMania cards. Austin was the first man in the main event scene, taking the title from Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XIV. After this Austin began a violent war with Vince McMahan, the biggest feud of the entire Attitude era by far. McMahan began to use anyone and everyone he could to keep Austin from the title, including the hot new superstar The Rock. McMahan got the belt off Austin and onto The Rock and the two ended up fighting at WrestleMania XV. It was their second WrestleMania meeting that changed the landscape of the WWE when McMahan turned on The Rock and handed Austin a chair to use on his opponent allowing Austin to once again regain the WWE Championship. After the match, Austin shared a beer with his sworn enemy McMahan and the two began a partnership no one saw coming. It was not only a huge heel turn, but it was done at WrestleMania. Normally a card used to end feuds, this year it was used to set up a new direction for the company and was one of the most shocking moments I have seen.
WrestleMania: The Card That Started It All
The match wasn't great but, honestly, none of the matches on the first two WrestleMania cards were very good. However, this was the one that started it all. The WWF was looking for something to help get them to the next level. They had found a star in Hulk Hogan and they needed that something extra to compete with rival promotions like the NWA, WCCW and UWF. What they found was WrestleMania. They took mainstream pop culture and mixed it with their specific brand of sports entertainment, filled with cartoon caricatures of wrestlers and something big happened. The main event of the inaugural WrestleMania involved Roddy Piper and Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff against Hulk Hogan and television star Mr. T. The special guest referee was boxing legend Muhammad Ali. The special ring announcer was former Yankees manager Billy Martin. The event was cross promoted on MTV and Saturday Night Live while spawning a Saturday morning cartoon. It was a show for the masses and began the "event" we all know and love today.
WrestleMania XIV: Shawn Michaels passes the torch to Steve Austin
Shawn Michaels was the star of the WWF, flamboyant, arrogant and more talented than anyone on the entire roster. Then after one fateful bump in a match against The Undertaker, he was a broken man. In a casket match with the Dead Man, Michaels took a backdrop out of the ring and clipped his lower back on the casket on the way to the floor, causing two herniated discs while crushing one completely. Two years after he won his first World Championship, the 33-year old Michaels was going to have to retire. It is lucky for the WWF there was someone waiting in the wings in the form of Steve Austin. They knew they could take the title from Shawn and give it to Austin and move on without problem but what they ended up getting was a spirited performance from Michaels, in what he thought was going to be his last match. It was clear the entire match Shawn was in pain but he still hit all his signature moves and never held back, making sure he gave his fans one last great performance. And in the meantime, he helped put over Steve Austin, so the company could move forward without him. It was a great match, an amazing performance and a fitting farewell for the Heartbreak Kid.
Bret Hart was coming off a great run as a tag team wrestler in the WWF and had secured himself a place in the main event scene in the early nineties. He had already held the World Championship on one occasion, having defeated Ric Flair before losing it at WrestleMania IX to Yokozuna. Since that loss, Hart had welcomed his younger brother Owen into the WWF and soon found himself embroiled in a family feud of sorts. Owen was extremely jealous of his older brother and eventually inflicted a brutal beat down on Bret, attacking his brother's injured knee. After Bret and Lex Luger tied in the Royal Rumble, both men received World Championship matches at WrestleMania against Yokozuna, with Luger getting the first shot of the evening. Owen demanded and eventually received a match against Bret early on the card as well and went on to pull the surprising upset of his brother, with a clean pinfall. Bret then went on later in the card to beat Yokozuna for the Championship, leading to an even bigger feud with his brother, who now knew he could beat Bret on any given day. It was a great card, and the Hart brothers were the MVPs of the evening.
WrestleMania XX: Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit celebrate in the ring after their World Championship wins.
A lot of you will hate this pick but this column is about the best moments in WrestleMania history and this moment was an incredible conclusion to a great PPV. Yes, Chris Benoit killed his family and, yes both wrestlers are now dead, but the final moments of WrestleMania XX were special at the time they happened. When Eddie Guerrero ran into the ring, holding his new championship belt and embraced his best friend Chris Benoit, who had just won his first world championship in the WWE, I felt so happy inside for both men. They had worked their asses off since leaving WCW and this was their just reward. Of course, what has happened since that moment has dampened the greatness of the memory but it still remains frozen in time as a very special moment in the lives of these two men. If Benoit had not snapped, this might be a Top 5 moment.
WrestleMania 2000: The Hardy Boyz vs. Edge & Christian vs. The Dudley Boys revolutionize the ladder match
Tables, ladders and chairs - oh my! The weapons of choice were once the property of ECW, with an occasional ladder match for a title belt in the WWE. Then the tag team division introduced the TLC matches to WrestleMania where they were not just weapons but also the devices used for high spots that risked every man's life and limbs. This all started at the Terri Invitational Tournament at No Mercy in 1999 when Edge, Christian, Matt, and Jeff Hardy proved what they could do with big ass ladders. By WrestleMania 2000, these two teams, along with the Dudley Boys were ready to prove what they could do on the biggest stage of the year. The match was a ladder match but The Dudley Boys made sure to bring the tables into play as well. The match was brutal, devastating and left all three teams a bloody mess and ended up with Edge and Christian celebrating their first tag team title reigns. It was the precursor for the TLC matches of later years and eventually of the Money in the Bank match. It was groundbreaking and the perfect start to the high impact matches WrestleMania has become known for.
WrestleMania X: Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon perfect the ladder match
There have been so many ladder matches over the years, it is just a generic specialty match now. With the Money in the Bank Matches and the TLC matches, the ladder is just a tool to use lately. The goal became taller ladders, or numerous ladders, brought into play for risk takers like Jeff Hardy to fly from. But when it was getting started, the ladder match was something different, something unique and this match between Scott Hall and Shawn Michaels was something special. The two men had a better ladder match at SummerSlam the next year, but this match is still one I will watch anytime I get the chance. The Intercontinental belt was on the line with both men claiming to be the champion (Michaels was stripped of the title but kept his belt anyway). The match was a brilliant back-and-forth affair with both men devising new, innovative ways to actually use the ladder as a weapon. As I said, this is all old school now but at the time it was revolutionary. Every ladder match since owes something to these two men.
WrestleMania III: Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage - first really great WrestleMania match
I mentioned earlier that the first two WrestleMania cards were all about the spectacle and there was not much in the way of good wrestling action. Hell, the best match on either of the first two cards was a tag match between The British Bulldogs and Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake. But the third WrestleMania presented two great moments and one of those was the fact we actually got a spectacular bout that deserved to be called the Match of the Year. It is no secret Randy Savage was one of the most precise wrestlers to ever step into the ring. He made sure to have every spot in the match worked out to perfection. He was so great in his preparation that he brought some classic matches out of Hulk Hogan. It only means when he stepped into the ring with Ricky Steamboat on the biggest card of the year, it could only be magic. These two men did not disappoint, delivering one of the greatest matches of all time, WrestleMania or not. They proved you could have all the spectacle you wanted at the PPV but all it took was one match like this to bring down the house. Despite all the names from the first two WrestleMania cards, this one still reigns supreme and it is mostly because of this one match.
WrestleMania VI: Ultimate Warrior is handed the torch by Hulk Hogan when he beats him for the World Championship
I grew to hate Hulk Hogan after a while. He was the world champion and held onto the belt with an iron grip. He fought all the guys I hated like King Kong Bundy but there was something about him I didn't trust. Understand, this was during the kayfabe era when I watched wrestling as a fan and knew nothing about the inner workings of the sport. I had favorite wrestlers like Ricky Steamboat, Paul Orndorff, Tito Santana and The Junkyard Dog and they never received a shot at Hogan's world title. These guys worked their asses off and Hogan never seemed to give them the time of day. Whenever a good guy wanted a title shot, they had to turn bad (Andre, Orndorff) and then were treated like a heathen for wanting a shot at the gold.
Seeing this, I really started to hate Hulk Hogan. Then a new guy came along and I was enthralled. This guy wore face paint and ran to the ring and shook the ropes and was the hottest face in the company, even more so than Hulk Hogan. Of course, I knew who this guy was because I discovered him in Oklahoma when I watched Mid South Wrestling (Rock of the Blade Runners) and World Class Championship Wrestling (Dingo Warrior). So, when he finally was granted a shot at Hulk Hogan, I got excited. What is even better was the fact he didn't turn into bad guy to get the shot. The match pitted a good guy versus good guy for the World Championship, something unheard of in that era.
Then The Ultimate Warrior won the championship by pinning Hulk Hogan and Hogan didn't throw a tantrum or pout and bitch like he had in the past. Hogan congratulated the Warrior and left the ring, allowing the new champion to enjoy the spotlight. It is one of the only times Hogan has ever stepped aside for someone else. You know, if Hogan had fought more good guys before this, even if he had beaten them every time, I might not have grown to hate him as much as I did. On this one evening, Hogan did what was right for the sport and we got a WrestleMania moment all fans could enjoy.
WrestleMania XII: Shawn Michaels Fulfills His Boyhood Dream
I have been a fan of Shawn Michaels for a very long time. I started out following him way back when he wrestled in the AWA as one half of the Midnight Rockers with Marty Jannetty. Even at the time, I was a bigger fan of Michaels, so when The Rockers debuted in the WWF and Michaels eventually turned on Marty, I wasn't too sad because I knew it meant bigger and better things were in store. Shawn eventually moved up from being a tag team partner (who criminally never won WWF gold with Jannetty) to a single's star with nice runs in the mid card. He held the Intercontinental belt and proved to be one of the two fastest growing stars of the nineties.
At Wrestlemania XII, those two stars were put into the ring together as Bret Hart defended his World Championship against Shawn Michaels. It was a different kind of main event. Instead of a super human like Hulk Hogan or a monster like Yokozuna, we got two of the most athletic wrestlers in the promotion and they were allowed to fight for an hour in an Iron Man match to determine the champion. It should be no surprise they brought the house down. From the start, when Shawn propelled from the ceiling on a zip line, the match was a scene to behold. When time expired and the two went to sudden death overtime, Shawn pinned Bret and became the new World Champion, fulfilling his "boyhood dream" on the grandest stage of them all.
WrestleMania VII: Randy Savage and Elizabeth reunite
The Macho King Randy Savage entered WrestleMania VII with his career on the line. While the match was great, it did more to make The Ultimate Warrior look like a superstar than help Randy Savage go out in style. The Warrior kicked out after five consecutive flying elbow drops. Five!!! But this moment is not about the match, but about what happened after the match ended. Savage had built his career with the beautiful Elizabeth by his side. She stood by him regardless of the abuse he inflicted on her. When the Mega Powers exploded, it was all due to Elizabeth. Then Savage kicked her to the curb and took Sensational Sherri as his manager. When Savage lost to Warrior, and was forced to retire, Sherri proved she was only out for herself and turned on him, beating him down. Then from the stands ran Elizabeth, who had been watching in the audience. While the retirement match itself was not as great as others, the post match celebration with Elizabeth was the perfect end to years of storylines. The once abusive relationship turned in a beautiful climax where, for the first time, Savage held the ropes for Elizabeth to leave the ring as he received a standing ovation from the tearful audience. It was the perfect conclusion to the Macho Man/Elizabeth storyline.
WrestleMania 13: Stone Cold Steve Austin becomes a star
Steve Austin was trying to find himself in the WWE. He had been fired and sent packing by WCW after being underutilized his entire stay there. Even a US Title reign and a Tag Team title reign were not enough to make Eric Bischoff see how special Austin could be to his company. Then Austin proved he was as charismatic as anyone in wrestling with his short stay in ECW. Austin then moved to the WWF where he became The Ringmaster, managed by Ted DiBiase, but he made a name for himself when he won the King of the Ring and insulted Jake "the snake" Roberts by saying "You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn't get you anywhere! Talk about your Psalms, talk about John 3:16... Austin 3:16 says I just whooped your ass!"
Fans started to take notice of this tough as nails wrestler and began to watch him carefully. Bret Hart was the top baby face in the company at the time but fans were tiring of his sanctimonious attitude and holier than thou personality. Austin began to torment Hart, first eliminating him from the 1997 Royal Rumble after Austin had already been eliminated himself, and then later costing Hart the WWE Championship to Psycho Sid in a title match on Raw. Austin was the aggressor and Hart was furious with how many times Austin screwed him (that seems to be a theme with the Hit Man). This final incident led to their WrestleMania encounter, which Hart won. However, what makes this match special is the fans chose to turn their allegiances thanks to this match, not because of anything Hart did wrong, but because Austin refused to give up and passed out from the pain instead. He then refused help to the back and suddenly Steve Austin was the most popular wrestler in the WWE. It was the defining moment in the Rattlesnake's career and changed the face of the WWE, ushering in the Attitude Era.
WrestleMania X8: The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan
Armchair quarterbacks complain this match was not that good. It was not a technical masterpiece and was not as fast paced and original as it could have been. I say: Who Cares? When Hulk Hogan reformed the nWo in the WWE, he was the same old evil leader of the pack he was in WCW, except for one important thing. Fans in the WWE love Hulk Hogan, whether he is a good guy or a bad guy. The Rock is the most charismatic man to ever step into the ring, but fans have loved him and loved to hate him over the years. When the good guy, The Rock stepped into the ring with the evil Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8, the fans made the easy decision. They were going to cheer Hulk Hogan at all costs. This might have screwed up a match with lesser competitors, but these men were the best of the best. They looked around and made an unspoken decision on the spot. Hogan immediately became the baby face and The Rock began to wrestle as a heel. It made NO sense. The Rock was almost killed by Hogan leading up to the match and Hogan was the total evil in this feud. But this is WrestleMania and the moment overshadows the lead in feud. If the fans wanted to cheer Hogan, far be it from The Rock to disappoint them. The match became a thing of beauty with the improvisations the two made and it goes down as one of the more special moments in recent WrestleMania memory.
I guess this moment is not as special as it was when it occurred, thanks to Flair's return to the ring in Australia and now in TNA, but taken as a moment in time, it is one of the most special moments at any WrestleMania. No, Flair was not anywhere near as great in the ring as he was when he was younger, and I have grown tired of his overreacting in his later years, preferring his arrogance over his pomp and circumstance. But this feud, between the greatest wrestler of all time and the best wrestler in the world, was more than special. Shawn made sure he brought out the best in Flair and gave everything he had to make sure that Flair's last match was something to remember. It got cheesy when Shawn paused before the final Sweet Chin Music, but I don't care. I have followed Flair since his days in the Carolinas and this was exactly the way the man should have gone out. It was the biggest stage in professional wrestling and the ovation he got at the end was beautiful. It's too bad the moment will not be Flair's swan song to in-ring competition because it was the best "final match" I have ever seen.
WrestleMania III: Hulk Hogan body slams Andre the Giant
Hulk Hogan was the most popular wrestler in the world, a super hero in the ring. Andre the Giant was a legend. He was "undefeated" and was easily the most beloved wrestler in the entire sport. At the first Wrestlemania, Andre had a bodyslam challenge with fellow big man Big John Studd. When Andre lifted Studd and slammed him, the place went nuts. Two years later, Andre the Giant was one of the most hated wrestlers in the WWF, managed by the manipulative Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, and he dared challenge Hulk Hogan for the World Championship. As I mentioned earlier in this column, Hogan didn't like people to challenge him, friends or not, and took it personally. Andre had to turn bad to get the match and that meant I was in Andre's corner. But something happened to impress the hell out of me. Hulk Hogan lifted Andre and slammed him to the mat, setting up the leg drop for the win. When Hogan lifted the Giant and slammed him, my jaw hit the floor. WrestleMania III was one of the greatest of all time. The Steamboat/Savage match was awesome but the moment Hogan slammed Andre, the show became immortal.
Benoit and Eddie celebrating at WMXX will be my top moment forever.
Nothing was ever so 'real' in this business that meant so much to them and everybody watching on the grandest stage possible.

flair at wm24 means jackshit now....
and i teared up watching it live!
sorry, just my thought on the topic.

I love Hogan and Flair moments!!!

all worthy editions but no undertaker at all? 17-0? odd...
Posted By: beerslayer (Guest) on March 18, 2010 at 11:55 PM
You should've stressed Bret beating Yoko and Vince apologizing to him through that for what had happened last year. Besides that the moment was as big as Shawn or Austin winning as that showed him to be the top guy, especially winning at a landmark Mania like 10. But it's your list and I respect that.

I'll say it again.
1. It was one of the sloppiest body slams ever. It was more like gently rotating him to the mat.
2. Andre had been slammed many times, despite what McMahon wanted you to believe.
Doesn't deserve the #1 spot for those 2 reasons.
Posted By: Scott B (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 12:20 AM
It should be stressed though flair will never ever have a good match or a match people will care about ever again.

"all worthy editions but no undertaker at all? 17-0? odd..."
That's a pretty good point. I didn't actually notice until you mentioned it. Most of his wins in the first half of that streak were crap. There was one Undertaker moment - the entrance with the druids before he fought Kane - that almost made it to the list.

Its hard to argue against the WM 12 HBK moment being among the top, I just didn't like the way shawn demanded Hitman to get out of the ring right after the match. That brings it down a few notches for me.
Posted By: Guest#4026 (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 12:58 AM
Some really great moments on that list. Kudos! I can respect the matches, the order could be debated. I'd buy it for a dollar.

WM XX moment at the end is my personal favorite... but I would fit it Triple H vs. John Cena from WM 22 in this list somewhere. Definitely an underrated match.
Posted By: Guest#4009 (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 01:07 AM
The fans cheering Hogan and booing the Rock had more to do with the event being in Toronto than WWE fans liking Hogan. Fans in Toronto are known to cheer for the heel if they are better wrestlers than the faces. Goldberg is one perfect example...can't be cheered in Canada even if he carried a Canadian flag to the ring.

WOO! Glad to see Flair's thing get some love. Forget whatever he did after.. the man has to make a living. But he is Ric f'ing Flair, and this was one of the all time great moments.
Unfortunately Undertaker's feat probably can't go on here until he either loses or fights in his last 'Mania match.

Great list! But there is the glaring omission of Warrior'r return at Wrestlemania VIII.

"the fans chose to turn their allegiances thanks to this match, not because of anything Hart did wrong"
Actually, if you watch the match, Bret's actions start becoming more and more heelish and the fans turn because of that.

oh look, yet again putting over a murderer. you smarks disgust me.

Shawn Michaels has stolen Bret Harts holier than thou bit.

benoit and eddie end of wm 20, best wm moment ever, the fact that it still resonates strongly even after wwe puts the screws to that moment and will never ever prbbly show it in their montages. shows you how perfect that moment was.

Love all the WM lists..good one here except I would personally change the order on some of them.
10 WM 10 Owen pins Bret, Bret pins Yoko
9 WM 18 Hogan vs Rock
8 WM 12 Iron Man
7 WM 7 Savage reunites w/ Elizabeth
6 WM 24 HBK retires Flair (it was meaniful when it happened)
5 WM 13 Austin passes out
4 WM 10 Ladder match
3 WM 6 Warrior beats Hogan
2 WM 5 The Mega Powers
1 WM 3 Hogan slams Andre

A bunch of us were at WWF New York for WM X-&, and I can tell you the entire place collectively gasped when Austin turned heel. It was quiet for almost a full minute after the match, before all the "holy shit" comments started filling the room.
@ perez, I feel you on the flair match. not retiring after a showing like that, it seems like a slap in the face of the fans, and the guy who brought such a good match out of him.
Posted By: jsn (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 01:50 AM
Good list. I'm glad you chose the WM 2000 tag title match over the X-7 TLC match. I also prefer the 2000 version. And people forget this now but it was kind of surprising when E & C won.
I was glad to see that only four of the twenty were from the crappy post-brand split/current era.
I'd personally replace those four with Andre's face turn, Bret and Piper, and both of Savage's Title wins.
#1 for me will always be Bret/Owen and Bret's celebration at the end of WM X. But I can understand where most lists would have Hogan or Austin in the top spot.

When was the last time you smiled?
You seem very bitter here....

Great list.
"Doesn't deserve the #1 spot for those 2 reasons."
The fact thast it is still fondly remembered - even by those who dislike Hogan - suggests otherwise. It is the most memorable event at WM.
Posted By: Volourn (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 02:25 AM
I was at WMXXIV and dayum, the post Flair-HBK match was just one of the biggest tearjerkers I have ever witnessed.
But you are right Perez, it means jackshit now to a lot of people. That's why I am going to act as if his other matches haven't happened, that way I can remember that match the way it should be remembered.

#15 is way too low for the X-7 Main Event. It deserves top 5 status at least.

King Kong Bundy slamming and then doing a running elbowdrop on a midget at Wrestlemania 3 was a personal favourite.

Can't wait for the virgins around here to mention the famous spot involving Mickie and Trish. You know the one. It's always mentioned when stuff like this comes up. Hey guys, maybe if you actually left the house once in awhile you could get a woman like that.
Okay, not somebody like Trish. Not too many women that beautiful walking around. But you could score a chick like Mickie, maybe.

I'd like to see a top 50 list next. Moments like Bart Gunn getting knocked out by Butterbean are memorable for entirely different reasons, but memorable nonetheless.
Posted By: Elijah (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 04:07 AM
This list sucks. That Flair match was so overrated. The greatest retirement match ever is one that was not advertised as one: Rock/Austin from Mania XIX. Austin put his health on the line, but didn't make a pagentry of it. He didn't cry his eyes out when it was over. And he didn't get some contrived ceremony in his honor the night after that, even though he is a MUCH more historic wrestler than Flair, world titles be damned. I'm not even a huge Austin mark, but that's the truth.
Speaking of Rock, you ever notice how much he got booed later on in his career? The Hogan match was surreal, but I heard Rock get booed other times from 2001-2003. Maybe that's why he finds it so easy to ignore wrestling fans now. They are a fickle group, and he shouldn't worry about pleasing them anymore. They sure threw him under the bus alot if my memory serves me correctly. Karma is a bitch people.

sorry, just my thought on the topic.

I can see your logic there because he did say NEVER wrestle again in this ring at RAW the next night.

End of Mania 20 not even top 10? Bullshit, people play it down now because of the Benoit tragady but that was the greatest moment in Mania history, nothing has ever felt so real or had as much raw emotion as that moment. Looking at the top 10 the only thing that even comes close is HBK/Flair, Rock vs Hogan was a shit match with a great crowd, not worth top 10 and Hogan slamming Andre as #1?You gotta be kidding, right?
Bullshit list is bullshit

2 things. Do people not realise shawn wrestled WM14 WITH A BROKEN FREAKING.... back? Am I the ONLY man on the planet who notices that shawn is literally fucked for the entire match, cant bend at all, fuck he even starts crying in pain when he goes to pick up Austins leg for a wishbone. Yeah the best wrestler of all time kicks off the best era of all time wrestling with a broken back... 13? What the fuck mate? are you taking the piss out of everybody with a brain? And seriously, I dont care how epic the moment was when it happened, retrospect must count for something, and in retrospect, Hogan is a no selling piece of shit who did a... wait for it.... bodyslam? and F.U to the Big Show is more epic by a LOOOONNNNGGGGG way, and I hate new Cena (old school Cena was the bomb). So would every hulkamaniac in the IWC get over Hogan bodyslamming Andre. Its a shit match, finished with a shit slam, the only thing that makes it epic is the camera flashes in the background. Fuck hogan... brother.

Yeah, well, sloppy or not...I'd like to see you lift 500 pounds of dead weight long enough to "rotate him to the mat".
What I seem to think is even a far greater show of strength is when Cena had BOTH Edge and Big Show on his shoulders for his Attitude Adjustment. Whether you like Cena or hate him, THAT was fucking impressive. Not a top 10 moment, but damn...we're talking around 700 pounds there.

Actually I can think of 2 more decent Undertaker moments (although whether they're good enough to be on the list is another matter)-
His return at Wrestlemania 20 - The Deadman came back to one of the biggest pops at MSG.
Last year - HBK kicking out of the Tombstone - this is more for Undertaker's reaction than anything else. Very rarely does Taker show suprise or shock but he did at Wrestlemania 25.
How about HBK vs Jericho at Wrestlemania 19 - HBK's 1st match at Wrestlemania in 5 years. And the 'hug' at the end was a pretty cool moment.
Lesnar and the SSP - plus the fact that he had absolutely no idea what was going on yet carried on to finish the match with a F5 is pretty cool.
For me a great moment was Goldberg vs Lesnar at Wrestlemania 20. One of the worst matches at Wrestlemania but notable for the crowd reaction. It demonstrated the power of the Internet (with the news that both Lesnar and Goldberg were leaving) and the crowd who absolutely crapped over the match.
Other moments
Ulimate Warrior's returning and saving Hogan.
The crowd reaction against Cena at Wrestlemania 22 - just emptomised the year for Cena.
Celebrity involements - Donald Trump and Floyd Mayfeather
However most of the moments didn't have huge implicatons for after Wrestlemania so I can see why they didn't get on the list.

Benoit and Eddie celebrating at WMXX will be my top moment forever.
Nothing was ever so 'real' in this business that meant so much to them and everybody watching on the grandest stage possible.
..................
Neither one could draw a dime as champion they both bombed big time...................
I agree with #1 when you think of wrestlemania you think of Hulk Slamming Andre, then for me #2 Warrior hoisting both Belts over his head, more so because he beat to that stage an unbeatable Hulk Hogan you guys have to realise at that time that was a huge deal I mean Hogan never ever lost at that time let alone cleanly, not like now where the WWE or World Champion job in non title matches or get pinned in Tag team matches, Hogan never lay down that's what kept him like a superhero he looked unbeatable and for the Warrior to come along and Pin him clean it was a total shock moment hard to believe even though going into the match you really had no idea what would happen, that was my generations Biggest Match, so its my Fav Moment ever.
Posted By: ChrisA (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 09:02 AM
My fav moment is def Rock/Hogan Wrestlemania X-8, when he Hulked up at the end, I still get goosebumps,,,
It was cool McMahon put the Title on him one more time, but he just can't seem to fade into the sunset admirably...

At the time, nobody thought Andre had been slammed, so the moment was big. It's only now that we have Home Video releases with old archive matches that we realize the full backstory. Plus, if you want to really get into it, when Hulk slammed Andre years earlier at house shows, Andre was about 90 pounds lighter, and a couple inches shorter. His condition kept him growing, so the feat looked much more impressive at WM3.

"WrestleMania X8: The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan"
Why is it people bitch and moan about a past-it Hulk Hogan having a bad match in TNA, but when he did it at Wrestlemania in 2002, everybody starts ejaculating with joy?
I know it was a big thing, but big doesn't mean good - right Khali?

"When the good guy, The Rock stepped into the ring with the evil Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8, the fans made the easy decision. They were going to cheer Hulk Hogan at all costs."
Come on, Hogan went into business for himself and played the face all match, that's why they cheered him.

Great, more love for Benoit the family killer. It never ceases to amaze me how these smark fags find new ways to heap praise on their idol Benoit. The guy KILLED HIS WIFE AND KID IN COLD BLOOD, then hung himself to escape justice. ALL of his past accomplishments are VOID as a result.
As many have rightly pointed out, the hypocrisy of these nerds is shocking - they will condemn someone like Flair for "tarnishing" his legacy by coming out of a (fake) retirement, or dismiss some mid-carder and laugh at him being 'future endeavoured' because he didn't have awesome mat skills, but when one of their fanboy internet workrate heroes is exposed as a pathetic murderer the apologists and douchebags (who are all disconnected from reality and probably don't have any meaningful relationships in real life) all come out screaming in defence of their beloved idol Benoit. Aaron Hubbard is one of the worst of all for this.
The irony of all of this is that Benoit WASN'T THAT GREAT. Yeah he was an awesome technical wrestler... in a fake "sport". He didn't really win any of those matches. He had no personality and never drew a dime. His "epic" title win led to defending against jobbers like Kane while the real big stars remained in the main event. The way he is remembered and glorified on a DAILY BASIS on this site is just ridiculous and spits in the face of the wife and child he brutally murdered. If there is a hell, Benoit is burning there right now.

Points well taken, but like it or not, EVERYONE even non wrestling fans knows that in front of a mammoth crowd Hulk Hogan Body Slammed Andre The Giant at Wrestlemania. So it's number 1 not because of the slam, but because wrestling business became successful.

Great list.
I second the call for Bret/Piper to be here somewhere. While I never liked Bret, that was a match that forced me to accept him as a great wrestler.
Demolition vs Strike Force at WMIV is a personal favorite. The heels were cheered for beating the pretty boys, and the most over tag team of the WWF in the 80's had arrived.
Rock vs Hogan is very overrated to me. Hogan had nothing left at this point and beating him no longer meant anything. The Canadian crowd and their Bizarro World antics don't make the match better. It's not like Hogan playing the face and Rock playing the heel were stretches. It actually put both men in their comfort zones.
Scott B: Hogan slamming Andre was the single most important moment in the history of wrestling, and that's coming from a Hogan hater. It was physically impossible to grip Andre for a normal looking slam, and that makes it MORE impressive, not less.
Posted By: Jason Douglas (Registered) on March 19, 2010 at 10:37 AM
So Flair's retirement is tarnished by him returning to the ring, but Benoit winning the title isn't tarnished by him murdering his wife and his disabled son??? You hypocritical IWC nerds are fucking pathetic.

For me, what made Bret's WMX title win so special as a shot of Owen in the aisle once again in the shadow of Bret. That shot meant that Owen realized that on what should have been Owen's most glorious day, Bret still got the spotlight in the end.

Hogan slamming Andre is the quintessential Wresatlemania Moment! People may have other moments they prefer to this, but historically this in the most important moment in Wrestlemania and maybe even wrestling in general!
Someone else said this, but it bears repeating. Even the most CASUAL wrestling fan knows that Hulk Hogan Slammed Andre the Giant. There is a reason that that moment is shown on every highlight reel WWE uses and is always one of the Wrestlemania rewinds.
I actually watched this match when it happened. I remember cheering wildly when Andre almost won the match after falling on Hogan and remember being sad/shocked when Hulk bodyslammed Andre.
It always annoys me when I see people insulting this match. No, it is not a 5 star classic, but in 1987 Andre was already past his prime and his condition had deteriorated so badly, that he probably shouldn't have even been wrestling. He had back surgery before this match and was even wearing a brace under his singlet.
Andre wighed over 500lbs in that match. Even a man as strong as Hulk Hogan, no one could really see him doing that, but he did. So what if he didn't perform a "textbook" bodyslam, it was tremendous that he was able to do it at all! Andre had carried the WWF for the better part of 20 years and it was time to pass the torch.
The Unstoppable Force meets The Immovable Object! 90,000+(I know some people dispute this) fans in attendance for this match alone! Anyone who denies the significance of this moment is kidding themselves. If it weren't for this match and moment, Wrestlemania would NOT be what it is today!
Posted By: AndreFan (Registered) on March 19, 2010 at 02:33 PM
The fans cheering Hogan and booing the Rock had more to do with the event being in Toronto than WWE fans liking Hogan. Fans in Toronto are known to cheer for the heel if they are better wrestlers than the faces. Goldberg is one perfect example...can't be cheered in Canada even if he carried a Canadian flag to the ring.
Posted By: Guest#2600 (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 01:12 AM
so you're saying hogan is a better wrestler than the rock...you have got to be kidding me!

"The fans cheering Hogan and booing the Rock had more to do with the event being in Toronto than WWE fans liking Hogan. Fans in Toronto are known to cheer for the heel if they are better wrestlers than the faces."
Well if fans in Toronto will cheer the better wrestler, no matter what. Then that still doesn't explain why they cheered Hogan.

Five Things (all personal opinion)
#1) Savage & Elizabeth reuniting HAS to be number one.
#2) Flair/HBK is a bit overrated (but still a great moment - Flair's walk to the back specifically)
#3) Austin/Rock from Wrestlemania 19 has to be on the list. One reason, it was the ending to the attitude era. The other - that classic part where Austin and the Rock are talking to each other after the match.
4) Kane and Pete Rose???
5) Not sure if Michaels handed Austin the torch as much as Austin took it. Also, Austin was pretty much the number one guy as at December 1997.

I love how guys who gush over a guy in a fake sport because of his "work rate" insist on other people to "grow up" and overlook the fact he's a murderer. Are you shitting me? You worship a professional wrestler. That's adult??? Yeah I bet that brings in the chicks. "Hey I got some videos at home of Chris Benoit doing a Dragon Suplex. Are you getting hot yet?" McMahan? Really...? McMahAn?
Eddie's newly won belt? Really? NEWLY won?
Thankfully Austin was in the wings? Really? Michaels was the main guy and only his injury led to Austin's ascension? Really?
Hogan put Warrior over after the match? Really? He didn't pull out every trick in the book to make sure the camera stayed firmly on Hogan? Really?
Dude... not trying to be a troll but... weak... very weak.

Oddly seems this will never end. People have their beliefs in not including Benoit and others seemed to have gotten over it. One guy talked of him avoiding justice. Umm honestly, to kill your wife and child, I truly think that a judge would have handed him the dealth penalty anyway because it was apparent he had become a danger to himself and others I'm sure a lawyer would appeal it but trust a judge would have found a way to hand the death penalty to him(even with the research to the amount of drugs and head trauma he had, a judge would go that route hell even a jury would)
......what would disgust you more him being tried and put in prison for life or him being put to death which he did to himself. Or would it make you feel better to take his life, in fact making you a murderer as well. Sorry you wouldn't call it murder you would call it justice. All in all, it happened, it was a tragic, it was awful it was bad...everyone gets that.....but, oddly it escapes all the people that yell "murderer" the fact that most of the writers that do these columns never seem to write about Benoit without talking about that event, most always mention it. Yet people still feel the need to scream "murder" you talk down about everyone else. What if anything are you doing that is so much greater other than pointing out the bad in someone else probably covering up your own shit. Its been said a million times and it will be said a million more get over it. IF you believe Benoit is burning in hell, how about you move on and in essence let him burn, its not your job to keep the fire lit.
Posted By: Guest#4951 (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 04:06 PM
Sometimes the match makes the moment (Savage/Steamboat, Austin/Hart).
Sometimes the moment makes the match (Hogan slamming Andre, "I'm sorry. I love you.").
And sometimes, the moment just stands out on its own (Savage holding open the ropes for Elizabeth, Chris + Eddie + confetti).
If you are a fan of wrestling matches, a fan of the wrestling stories, or a fan of the wrestling business - the list had it all.

Pretty sure this has been said before but when will people get a better joke or response to these websites than "virgins," "mother's basement," "can't get a chick" or "fake sport," You realize that you are on here talking about the "fake sport" with the rest of the supposed people that cant get a chick. Also if you were jaded by the sport several years ago and stopped watching it...........why keep up with it. Wouldn't that make you one of the losers you come here to flame? Just a thought.
Great list and pretty sure if the WWE would have put more work into the title reign of Eddie Guerrero like they did building to his title victory over Lesnar, I think he would have been a better champ. As it stands JBL ended up cutting in and taking the title year that should have been Eddie's. Like it or not under the lie, cheat steal concept was the ultimate opportunist that later became the frame work of Edge, think about that.

I agree Benoit should just stay forgotten. But can we stop glorifying Guererro as well? He didn't do anything nearly as bad as Benoit of course, but the way some people make him out to be a folk hero is pathetic. He was only a star for about one year of his career, and all those "demons" he beat? Go look at his autopsy results and then tell me how clean he was. WWE turned him in to a hero to try and cover their tracks, and so many of you bought it hook, line, and sinker.

Are you getting hot yet?" You get misty over the Benoit/Eddie hug and you tell others to grow up? Seriously Basement Boys, YOU fuckers need to get a life!

Wow, are you a lawyer? I mean, the way you crafted such a cogent argument, it's airtight! To most people, whether or not the proponents of a viewpoint are sexually promiscuous, or the notion that professional wrestling is "fake" would be entirely irrelevant in judging the validity of a position which defends Chris Benoit's inclusion onto such an article.
But not you, you crafty devil! You saw right through all that. Hell, you even figured out that people "worship" the man! Columbo aint got nothing on you!

hey Guest#1800 Eddie deserves he's credit... Eddie was on pace to becoming the most popular wrestler in WWE (YES... that includes Cena, Taker, Angle, Batista, HBK, HHH, Orton etc.) if it wasn't for his death. I still remember every time he entered the arena with the car, everyone started chanting EDDIE! before a match and after it.

No love for women's wrestling, huh?
Say what you want, but Mickie's blatant fingering of Trish & sticking her hand in her mouth WAS awesome, and it fit in perfectly psycho stalker character, which was Mickie at her all-time best. It does deserve to be on the list, along with Victoria shaving Molly Holly's head.

Damn straight. I'm fucking sick of these workrate fanboys getting Benoit into every article ever. Let this murderer rot in obscurity!
Posted By: Guest#4028 (Guest) on March 19, 2010 at 04:45 PM
Agreed 100%. I posted this on another column and will repost it here - we may be in the minority on this site when it comes to glorifying Chris "I murdered my wife and child and took the coward's way out" Benoit, but in the REAL world, we are in the majority!
Most normal people don't go around trying to sugarcoat a horrific murderer! Everything else he did in his life was rendered moot when he murdered an innocent child and his wife! That is his legacy!

Ah yes, the night WWE finally threw Trish to the wolves. They let Mickie act so over the top in that match that nobody should be surprised that the crowd cheered for her. I swear, the way that feud was booked, I'm convinced that Vince was getting sick of Trish and decided to just cut her legs out from under her. Maybe WWE thought they had built her up too much for a female star, and figured she'd pull a Sable. Trish is a smart girl and probaly saw the writing on the wall. Six months later, she's out of the company. Coincedence? I think not.
The Molly/Victoria match was so forgettable that nobody cared about the actual head shaving. As fas as diva moments, how about when Trish turned on Jericho at the same show? That was the start of what was probaly her greatest period, which built her up into the huge megastar she is today, and eventually convinced WWE that they had to job her out, two years later. Funny how that works.

Bullshit. He wasn't as over as you claim he was. Again, part of the campaign that WWE started after he died. He was getting over again as he feuded with Batista, but he had faded as soon as he dropped the belt to JBL. For a year there, he was curtain jerking alot of PPVs.
But my point is now WWE acts like he was the underdog that overcame all his past problems, but then died because there was just too much damage done over the years. That's only partially true. All the steroids and other drugs in his system played a pretty big part as well, I'd say.

McMahan? Really...?
Really?
Dude... not trying to be a troll but... weak... very weak.

-Wow...he couldn't spell a name...he must burn in hell!!
-Yes, Eddie won the belt at the previous PPV, that makes it NEWLY one...he didn't
-Um that's what being in the wings means. That Shawn was top dog, and thankfully with Austin being over and IN THE WINGS, HBK leaving would be ok
-Are you saying that Hogan controls the cameras while in the ring?? Interesting...
Ya know, for a massive douche, you should really back up your unnecessary sarcasm before making an ass out of yourself

Nice point with one flaw...in no universe is Hogan a better wrestler than the Rock. Even Canadian fans know that. The Rock has more than four moves in his arsenal.

If OJ Simpson can still be in the Hall of Fame and Micheal Jackson can still have thousands of people show up at his place after he died, surely people can remember Chris Benoit for the wrestler he was in the ring and seperate that from the horrible act he committed

Just making sure you understand I never glorified Benoit in this article. I was listing the best moments that made WrestleMania special, which that end in the ring with him and Eddie did AT THE TIME. I mean, unless that moment in the ring killed his family or something, since this was about the moment not the man.

Can't wait for the virgins around here to mention the famous spot involving Mickie and Trish. You know the one. It's always mentioned when stuff like this comes up. Hey guys, maybe if you actually left the house once in awhile you could get a woman like that.

The reason the body slam looked crap was because Andre's body was in a terrible state to the point where he was wrestling in a back brace.
Andre deserves props for just getting in the ring.

"Top 20 WORST WrestleMania moments" as a counter article to this.

OK I have changed my opinion on Benoit due to this incredibly lucid, well thought out, intelligent statement. How can one argue with the indisputable facts as laid out by this obvious scholarly gentleman. I totally forgot all the sold-out arenas & merchandise that the overwhelmingly popular Benoit moved. He was probably second only to Hogan in that regard. So yes indeed we should all "get over it". All he did was murder a woman & a child but man did he have a wicked moveset! I will move on to denigrating athletic performers who have REALLY done something terrible, like that bastard Pete Rose! He bet on baseball!Let's make sure he stays banned from baseball & leave poor misunderstood Chris Benoit alone. Thank you gentlemen for showing me the errors of my ways. I will now go watch the Benoit/Eddie hug & let my emotions flow with the magnificence of this watershed moment in athletic history. I can already feel a tear coming to my eyes.

Seriously? OJ got in the hall before the murders. And that was a REAL sport, something you seem to be forgetting. This is a fake sport, where the promoters decide who and who will not have hall of fame careers. They can also decide who will be honored.
And Michael Jackson was known all over the world, literally one of the most famous names and faces of the 20th century. Are you honestly comparing Benoit to that? Even in the world of wrestling, he was never a big deal.

Nice try. The reason I brought it up was because I was convinced it would show up on the list, or in the comments. Even though it was basically just a lame attempt at soft core lesbian porn. But all the horny virgins in Chicago ate it up.
Those same virgins that booed Trish that night, even though they would probaly have a heart attack if they got within a hundred feet of her. And now they come online and make her out to be the female Hogan, Rock, and Austin, all rolled in to one, since she retired.
The same fans that looked like somebody ran over their dog when Cena won in the main event. Probaly the funniest ending to a Wrestlemania I have ever seen. You know, because I don't take this shit too seriously like they do. They were loser wrestling fans that deserved to be mocked. Get it now?
Posted By: Guest#5051 (Guest) on March 20, 2010 at 02:13 PM
Hey losers. Don't forget my dark match at Wrestlemania 6 against the Brawler. It was the jobber version of Hogan/Warrior.

Just so everyone knows. Chris Benoit is in hell and he is our current heavyweight champion. He one the belt from Hitler and Judas iscariot in a what i did was more fucked up than what you did match.. His next big match is a triple threat against Eddy gurrero and Barack Obama's health care bill

I have absolutely no problem with the way you did it. At least you mention the aftermath of Benoit's career. The ones that bother me are the ones who say everyone needs to "get over it" and are not mature if they don't lavish praise on him and totally disregard the murders. If done in context as you did it, I see no problem with it.

Lealos did a great job and to an extent people really do need to ease up on both sides of the Benoit front.
Yes he's a bastard and deserves to be raped in Hell for the evil crimes he committed.
However forgetting and denying what he did prior to his final days is just insane. I've seen the likenings to OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson which make sense.
Did Jackson sell a ton of albums and earn his spot as "King of Pop?" Certainly, but he also had the spectre of child molestation which may or may not have been true. Conversely look at all the records OJ held and look at what he more than likely did. Can we take back the millions of albums Jackson sold or the hits he had? Can we subtract all of OJ's yardage?
The answer is no.
I'm not saying move on, get over it, etc. Just calm down on both fronts.
