411’s Wrestler of the Week 5.17.10: Week 7

May 17, 2010 | Posted by Daniel Bonnizzio

Welcome to Week SEVEN, Year SIX, of 411’s Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…

Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…

1st – 5
2nd – 4
3rd – 3
4th – 2
5th – 1

If you are wondering how some of the writers decide who to vote for, please check out our Wrestler of the Week Supplemental Column!

Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there’s more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…

1st – 15
2nd – 12
3rd – 9
4th – 6
5th – 3
6th – 1

…and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year at WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let’s see who wins this week…

The Voting~!

Jeremy Thomas
1) Rob Van Dam
Rob Van Dam had his first TNA Pay-Per-View title defense, and in it he beat AJ Styles once again who had the longest reign since the title split from the NWA World Title. It may not have been a match of the year candidate, but it’s a big win for RVD and shows that TNA may actually have some confidence in him and wasn’t just trying to pop the ratings short-term.

2) Douglas Williams: Douglas regained what was rightfully his by defeating Kazarian to take back his X-Division Title. Not even a volcano can keep the man from the top for long!
3) KnesSuka (K-ness & Susumu Yokosuka): KnesSuka defeated Cyber Kong and Shingo Takagi to end KAMIKAZE’s reign with the Open the Twin Gate Championship in Dragon Gate this weekend. It’s K-ness’s first reign with the tag title and Susumu’s third, and kudos to them for coming out on top.
4) Bryan Danielson
5) Madison Rayne & Layla (tie)

Larry Csonka
1) RVD/AJ Styles
Rob Van Dam solidifies his position as TNA World Champion by defeating former Champion and TNA poster boy AJ Styles in the main event of Sacrifice. Both men worked hard to put on a good match, and AJ’s win on Impact helps earn him the tie this week.

2) Douglas Williams: Douglas Williams wins back the X-Division Title that he never should have lost at Sacrifice. Douglas can continue to be a proper champion, and school all of these youngsters in the art of catch as catch can wrestling.
3) The Motor City Machine Guns: Are once again the #1 contenders for the TNA tag team titles after winning a fun PPV match.
4) Kofi Kingston
5) Layla

Ryan Byers
1) Dave Batista
Batista was absolutely dominant on Monday Night Raw this week, first punking out John Cena thanks to an assist from Sheamus and then putting Mark Henry, the World’s Strongest Man, in to a world of hurt with a new submission hold.

2) Drew McIntyre: Drew is your NEW Intercontinental Champion and perhaps the first man in wrestling to win the match via letter. Sorry, Kofi.
3) Wade Barrett: Mr. Barrett was the top pick in the WWE NXT Pro’s Poll this week, and, with Daniel Bryan and Darren Young having been eliminated, he’s the odds-on favorite to win the whole competition.
4) Tyson Kidd
5) Bryan Danielson

Michael Bauer
1) Rob Van Damn
Great title defense this week to main event TNA’s Pay Per View. It was a pretty slow week around, so not much else could get the top spot.

2) Douglas Williams: Like RVD, he has a great title defense.
3) Kofi Kingston: He won the IC Title… for a second.
4) Randy Orton
5) Bryan Danielson

Daniel Bonnizzio
1) Rob Van Dam/AJ Styles
RVD had his first successful PPV title defense against AJ Styles at Sacrifice; the had a good match for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.

2) Kofi Kingston: Being stripped of it be damned, he beat Christian to become a two-time Intercontinental Champion.
3) Douglas Williams: Proved that he was the real X-Division Champion by beating Kaz at Sacrifice.
4) Randy Orton
5) The Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley)

Chad Nevett
1) Kofi Kingston
While the title may have been taken away immediately, Kingston still beat Christian in a great match for the Intercontinental Championship.

2) Rob Van Dam: Retained the TNA World Heavyweight Championship against AJ Styles at Sacrifice.
3) Douglas Williams: Proved that he is indeed the TNA X-Division Champion by beating Kazarian.
4) Randy Orton
5) The Motor City Machine Guns
