411’s Wrestler of the Week 08.02.10: Week 18

Welcome to Week 18, Year SIX, of 411’s Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…
Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…
1st – 5
2nd – 4
3rd – 3
4th – 2
5th – 1
If you are wondering how some of the writers decide who to vote for, please check out our Wrestler of the Week Supplemental Column!
Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there’s more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…
1st – 15
2nd – 12
3rd – 9
4th – 6
5th – 3
6th – 1
…and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year at WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let’s see who wins this week…
LARRY CSONKA
1) The Motor City Machineguns
Once again the Machineguns are involved in one of the best matches of the week as they continue their feud with Beer Money. Sabin and Shelley are motivated, they are working hard, and with Beer Money, simply deliver.
2) Tigers Mask: A defense and title victory all in one for Tigers Mask as he defeated CIMA to win the Osaka Pro Singles Title AND retain the Open the Brave Gate Title.
3) Shelton Benjamin: Shelton gained some gold since leaving WWE, defeating Ray Gonzalez to win the WWC Universal Title.
4) The Miz
5) Christian
Andy Critchell
1) Swagger/Rey-Rey
This was my favorite match of the week. Maybe it’s just me but I think there two have really good chemistry. Plus I loved how Swagger, the All-American American, said he couldn’t swim. Just LOLs over that one. In a slow week, I have no problem putting these guys at the top.
2) Michael McGillicutty: At this stage in his career, getting #1 in the NXT poll was HUGE for Perfect Jr. He’s been clearly established as the guy that WWE thinks has the biggest future and he hasn’t done anything to shake that belief. He’s risen to the occasion both in the ring and on the mic when given the chance. I like where things are going for this kid.
3) THE MIZ: Talk about rising to the occasion, rather than dial it back after winning MITB Miz seems to be charging forward harder than ever. He has impressed the hell out of me lately. You will not find a bigger MORRISON mark than me but Miz is running circles around the Monday Night Delight.
4) Percy Watson
5) Orton
Jeremy Thomas
1) The Miz
The Miz continued his streak on Raw as his semi-feud with Sheamus continued. He very nearly cashed in against Sheamus and was foiled only by an RKO, then picked up the pinfall in the main event over John Cena. Good week for Mr. Raw Money in the Bank.
2) Motor City Machine Guns: These guys just keep putting on the match of the week every damn week along with Beer Money. This week it was a truly bad-ass cage match and as the Guns got the win to stay alive, they get the votes this week.
3) Shelton Benjamin: Shelton picked up gold in Puerto Rico, defeating Rey Gonzalez to pick up the WWC’s Universal Heavyweight Championship.
4) Dolph Ziggler
5) Abyss/Tommy Dreamer (tie)
Michael Bauer
1) Motor City Machine Guns
Week after week, these guys are putting on great matches with Beer Money and finally they got a win in the Best of Five Series. I expect more goodness to come in the next two weeks.
2) Tigers Mask: Biggest Title chance of the week as he wins the Osaka Pro Singles Title AND retains the Open the Brave Gate Title.
3) The Miz: Hard for me to buy it since Jericho turned on Cena, but it’s still a pinfall victory.
4) Abyss
5) Shelton Benjamin
Steve Cook
1) Motor City Machine Guns
An outstanding effort with Beer Money on Impact trumps anything else I saw this week. Hopefully Alex Shelley won’t be on the shelf for too long, because now he and Chris Sabin are finally getting a chance to do something big in TNA.
2) Jack Swagger: Though he once again came up short in his quest to defeat Rey Mysterio on Smackdown, he didn’t lose this time. He was the star of the match with his protestations that he couldn’t swim and yelling at a speeding motorist “I’M WALKING HERE!”. Biff would be proud.
3. Michael McGillicutty: He topped the NXT poll and has yet to be defeated. WWE likes the kid, though I still get too much of a Legacy vibe from him.
4. The Miz
5. Showtime Percy Watson
Ronnie LaFianza
1) Motor City Machine Guns
Every week the Guns have been going at it with Beer Money and they’ve absolutely been tearing it up on Impact. This past weeks Cage match was one of their best efforts yet, and the Guns have finally picked up a win in this Best of 5 series. Their Ultimate X match this week on Impact will without a doubt steal the show yet again.
2) Abyss: In what can be considered a huge win for The Monster, he defeated Tommy Dreamer in a No Disqualifications match in the main event of Impact. Abyss is heading into his battle against RVD with some strong momentum.
3) The Miz: Picked up a victory over John Cena in tag team action on Raw, thanks to some help from Chris Jericho. Miz-8, Cena-2.
4) Tigers Mask
5) Michael McGillicutty
THE WINNERS~!
Defeated CIMA to win the Osaka Pro Singles Title and also retained the Open the Brave Gate Title.
He’s the Miz, and he’s awesome.
