The 411 Wrestling Top 5 8.25.10: Week 89 – Cage Matches
Posted by Michael Bauer on 08.25.2010

Hello everyone and welcome to 411 Wrestling's Top 5 List. What we are going to is take a topic each week and all the writers here on 411 wrestling will have the ability to give us their Top 5 on said topic, plus up to three honorable mentions. Most of our topics will be based on recent events in the Wrestling World, looking at those events that make us think of times past.

So, on to this week's topic…

Top 5 Cage Matches

For years, before the age of Hell in a Cell, Casket Matches, Last Man Standing, and I Quit Matches, the Cage match was the end all for the greatest and hardest fought feuds. Today, a steel cage has been replaced by some of these matches, but today we looks back at the greatest of matches fought behind blue steel bars or chain link mesh.

So what did our group of writers select? Let's find out…

Ryan Byers

I should note for the record that, though there have been several variants on the cage match over the years, I decided that for this list I would focus on straight up cage matches in the traditional sense - no War Games, no I Quit in a cage, no Hell in a Cell - just good old fashioned, one-on-one cage matches.

5. Randy Orton vs. Ric Flair (WWF Taboo Tuesday 2004) - I probably like this match a lot more than some others do. I freely admit that. For those of you who may not remember the buildup to this particular match, it told a great little story, as Ric Flair claimed that he was going to take the much younger Randy Orton and break him into the wrestling business, truly making a man out of him. Of course, the Nature Boy got a little bit of heat when he phrased this in a vulgar fashion in a pre-match promo, in which he claimed that he had built a career on "making virgins bleed." Whoops. Regardless of Slick Ric's controversial phrasing in the buildup, the match fit its intended storyline very well, with Flair as the cagey veteran taking Orton to school in a match that his generation made famous, all followed up with the perfect babyface victory for the young gun.

4. Bruno Sammartino vs. Larry Zbyszko (WWWF Showdown at Shea 1980) - Most current wrestling fans probably don't know as much about this one as they should just because of the falling out between Vince McMahon, Jr. and Bruno Sammartino which has resulted in the company's one-time "Living Legend" becoming a virtual non-entity in the version of wrestling history that the promotion attempts to market today. However, at the time, this match was the culmination of one of the hottest feuds in all of professional wrestling, as Zbyszko had been billed as Sammartino's prize pupil for many years until the moniker frustrated him to the point that he laid out his teacher with a chair. Many months later, the men put their score to bed in a steel cage in the middle of over 36,000 fans at Shea Stadium, making an indelible mark on the psyches of virtually all northeastern wrestling fans at the time.

3. Bull Nakano vs. Aja Kong (AJW WrestleMarinpiad 1990) - Yes, I'm fairly certain some in the comment section will knock me for including a Japanese match on this list, and I'm sure there are a few more who will knock me for including a women's match on the list. However, given that this battle was more emotional and hard hitting than almost all of the men's cage matches that I've ever seen, I don't feel too bad about selecting it. Kong and Nakano as wrestlers were both several years ahead of their time and their feud was the stuff of legend, with this match in particular highlighting how far ahead of the curve they were. This brutal bout featured the use of chains, kendo sticks, and pipes all five years before ECW claims that it started popularizing a similar style of wrestling in North America, and it culminated with an insane-for-the-time guillotine legdrop from the top of the cage by Bull. This one is worth tracking down if you haven't already.

2. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (WWF Summerslam 1994) - Forget cage matches, this would probably rank high atop a list of my favorite matches of all time, period. The brothers Hart always had great chemistry going up against one another, and this bout was no exception. Despite the fact that they were handicapped by a WWF policy which did not allow for blood, the inferior "blue bar" version of the steel cage, and the lame "escape only" rules, Bret and Owen overcame all of those limitations and put on a legitimate ****+ battle which rivaled their Wrestlemania-opening bout earlier in the year. Plus, storyline-wise, the match paved the way for the WWF return of "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith, who was a welcome addition to a very thin lineup of top babyfaces in the company at the time.

1. Ric Flair vs. Kerry Von Erich (WCCW Christmas Star Wars 1982) - I don't think that this match is as good from a pure "workrate" perspective as some of the others on the list, but I don't think that there has ever been a cage match as historic as Ric Flair and Kerry Von Erich's showdown over the NWA World Heavyweight Title in World Class Championship Wrestling in 1982. All of the Von Erich boys had been super babyfaces in their daddy's WCCW at one point or another, and the Von Erichs had frequently been backed up by their good friends the Fabulous Freebirds in their wars against the promotion's nefarious heels. Leading up to the match, the Birds offered to assist Kerry in taking the NWA Championship off of the Nature Boy's waist, but Von Erich declined the offer if it involved any outside interference. This resulted in Freebird Michael "P.S." Hayes, who was scheduled to be the special guest referee for the match, feeling slighted and slamming the cage door on Kerry's head at a crucial moment. This lead to Flair retaining his belt and further lead to a red-hot Freebirds vs. Von Erichs feud. As a result, World Class became a super hot promotion and a heavily syndicated one which at certain points even rivaled the national popularity of the expanding World Wrestling Federation. It is rare that a single match can take a promotion's popularity to the next level like this one did, and that's why it tops my list.

LARRY CSONKA

5. Ric Flair vs. Kerry Von Erich (WCCW Christmas Star Wars 1982) - While this isn't the best Flair vs. Von Erich match, nor is it a greatly worked match, this match gets include don my list simply for the fact that it is credited for kicking off the MONEY era for WCCW. Things were going well for the company, but when Michael PS Hayes FUCKED Kerry Von Erich, the Freebirds vs. the Von Erichs was ON, and one of the best feuds in wrestling history was born.

4. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (Summerslam 1994) - While their WrestleMania X match gets most of their hype in regards to their feud, and rightfully so to a degree, but the Bret vs. Owen cage match from Summerslam 1994 is up there in terms of great match quality. As Byers pointed out, two men that had great chemistry were severely handicapped (no blood, escape rules, bulky blue cage) but they made it work through smart psychology. The made you care, they had all of the tricks taken away, but when that happens, good workers can still thrive, and they did here.

3. SIX SIDES OF STEEL: AMW vs. XXX (Turning Point 2004) - When this match was complete, Mike Tenay said, "You fans are watching something special, this is one of the greatest cage matches not only in TNA's history, but in wrestling's history." For once he was dead on. These 2 teams were able to really mix the great aspects of an old school cage match, beating the shit out of your opponent, ramming them off the cage, lots of blood, and then the new school, crazy bumps and dives. Elix Skipper was the craziest bastard alive with that tightrope walk on the cage, so much so that the crowd chanted, "PLEASE DON'T DIE!" The crowd was so into the match, and really helped make it a classic. It brought you in on an emotional level, they made you care. The funny thing was that they had a cage match previous to this, and while it was good, this was better.

2. WAR GAMES: Sting, Barry Windham, Dustin Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat and Nikita Koloff vs. Rick Rude, Arn Anderson, Larry Zbyszko, Bobby Eaton and Steve Austin (WrestleWar (1992) - As a huge fan of the NWA, WAR GAMES was the shit, and quite frankly, the good ones still are. While the format and quality suffered in later years, the 1992 match delivered big time. The funny thing is that to today's wrestling fans, they would look at this lineup and shit all over it, but the fact is that this is likely the best of the WAR GAMES matches that the NWA/WCW ran. By this time they had the right talent, the right formula and just knew what they were doing. The Dangerous Alliance was hated, you WANTED to see them get beat down and you wanted to see them get destroyed, and WAR GAMES was the place to accomplish this. If you have not had the chance to see the match, you need too.

1. I QUIT STEEL CAGE MATCH: Tully Blanchard vs. Magnum TA (Starrcade 1985) - And to top off my list is one of my very favorite matches of all time, Tully Blanchard vs. Magnum TA from Starrcade. Tully Blanchard was a guy that never got to be the big star, but was a respected worker, and during this time, Tully was money. Magnum TA was supposed to be the next big star, and the feud with Tully Blanchard was a big step towards that. While I love some holy shit spots and big bumps, there is something to love about a well thought out, deliberate cage match like this. They worked hard, they built to a crescendo, and the ending to the match was, in my mind, perfect. Enjoy.

Aaron Hubbard

5. Triple H vs. Ric Flair, Taboo Tuesday '05 - One of the best modern examples of an old school cage match. The record book says this was for the IC Title, but that wasn't really important. Triple H was there because he felt his idol Ric Flair was embarrassing himself and tarnishing his legacy, and he had to put him out of his misery. Ric Flair was there to prove to Triple H that he was still the man. Lots of blood, hatred, and great touches like Hunter stealing Flair's moves and mannerisms make this a great match.

4. AJ Styles vs. Abyss, Lockdown '05 - When TNA decided that they were going to put on a PPV where every match was contested inside the Six Sides of Steel, many were skeptical. While not every match was great, the PPV was overall very enjoyable and was capped off with this great main event between two of TNA's best and brightest homegrown talents. Styles overcame the odds and beat The Monster after a tremendous fight. Lockdown is still a major event in 2010, so I'd say this was successful.

3. Ric Flair vs. Harley Race, Starrcade '83 - All due respect to the great Magnum T.A. vs. Tully Blanchard match, but this is my favorite cage match of the 1980's. Ric Flair and Harley Race was a classic old school rivalry, a title feud that became a blood feud when Race put a bounty on Flair's head. This was Ric Flair's revenge, and after a match that mixed classic wrestling with sheer brutality, Flair came out the champion. A great passing of the torch from one great NWA Champion to perhaps the greatest NWA Champion.

2. AMW vs. Triple X, Turning Point '04 - It's hard to believe that out of these four, only James Storm is still working with TNA, and is in the same position on the card. I don't know what that says about TNA in 2010, but this match says a lot about TNA in the middle of the decade. I guarantee you won't be seeing a match between two teams who made their names as teams main event a PPV anytime soon. This rivalry was that intense, and the match was a great, great end to it. Skipper's cage walk and rana is one of the most mind-blowing spots of all time.

1. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart, Summer Slam '94 - The general consensus is that this is the best cage match ever, and I won't disagree with that. What sets this apart is that Bret and Owen were able to make us forget that cages matches were supposed to be about blood, violence and hatred. This was pure competition between two brothers who were determined to be the best. Two outstanding wrestlers, one great feud, and one tremendous blow-off.

Wow, only 3 writers care? One is an indy jobber. The other is a legend, and the other is a 20 year old kid who has never seen a pro wrestling match.

Duggan-Dibiase deserves some consideration and I'd rank it above several of these.

Magnum-Tully would probably be my #1.

I haven't seen the Bret vs. Owen cage match since it happened, but at the time I was disappointed and thought the finish was stupid. Then again I was rooting for Owen.

I'm surprised Taker vs. Foley got no mentions, but I suppose that was more of a spectacle than a match. Only one War Games made the cut, and I don't know if I could honestly say Triple H was ever in a top ten cage match, much less top five. but the lists weren't too bad. I'm glad everyone but Byers managed to find a spot for AMW vs. XXX...after all, aside from being an all around great match, with an incredible, mind-blowing spot, it was also one of the few times TNA stuck to a stipulation - XXX really did disband afterwards, for good.

Maybe it is not "Top 5" material, but I always loved Steiners vs Money Inc if only for the reason that I had never seen a tag team cage match before where both had to escape the cage...haven't watched it since I was little, so I'm sure it has aged terribly.

Just pointing this out, but Triple X did reform in 2007 for a brief run that ended in early 2008.

Give the kid a break. JESUS. Just because you are 30+ living in a basement apartment thinking "Shit, what the fuck did i do with my life" drinking Shirley Temples, jerking off to shitty internet porn, all whilst knowing way too much about the "manly arts" of wrestling do you qualify to shit on some kid who...u know...knows his shit. He's at least putting his opinions out there while you guys rifle through a bag of funyons, jerking off to Tila Tequila.

As it is...u have to LOVE the Magnum-Tully match. There is like ZERO wrestling involved, and almost no spots. Just a great story of two guys HATING eachother and bleeding for fun and profit. Cmon...Tully blades HIS ARM!! WHERE is that attention to detail since?

Trollers fuck off...give some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

That's probably exactly what he did. He's a smart guy.See wrestling is shit nowadays and with the power of YouTube, old video tapes, and just about any tape of video record, people who don't enjoy today's wrestling but enjoy wrestling can go back and see great wrestling and relive great feuds.Something the IWC needs to do so they can stop complaining. But that's not going to happen. It's the IWC and they are not happy unless they're miserable. That includes you.

Pretty good lists all the way around. Here are some that I could mention, at least as honorable mentions.

Jimmy Jacobs v. BJ Whitmer: The hatred between these two was palatable after the year-long fued they had in ROH, and it really manifested itself here.

Steel Cage Warfar: Generation Next v. Embassay: A perfect blowoff to this feud, which marked the last time Jimmy Rave was really relevant in the company.

BTW, XXX did disband for good--only to re-band about three years later, although it wasn't quite the same.

"What sets this apart is that Bret and Owen were able to make us forget that cages matches were supposed to be about blood, violence and hatred."

Nearly stolen word for word from the Bret Hart DVD put out in 2005.

XXX really did disband afterwards, for good.

Nope. They came back a few years ago. Made them out to be a really big deal....then jobbed them out a month later, predictably.

Personally I always liked the WWE's old Blue Cage for a couple of reasons.
One, the spaces between the cage were big enough that you could see the action on tv better.
Two, it looked more devastating when a wrestler was thrown into it. The old blue cage didn't have any give to it unlike the chain link fences.

you people are pathetic. who cares how old someone is, if someone is a jobber, etc. I dont see YOU assholes writing on this site, which says alot more about YOU than it does about THEM. Get off their fucking backs, they get paid, you dont, get over it. And for all you smarks that didnt see the AMW/XXX cage match shut the fuck up it was a classic by all means, just because its not more than 10 years old and in TNA doesnt mean it isnt good. FUCKING LOSERS. Respond to that, pussies.

hey... dumbshit... when are you and all the other fake wrestling fans gonna learn than the initials wrestlers work under does not change a wrestlers talent or match quality... you can be great and not be mainstream...

anyway... lists were pretty good... i think more writers could have been involved... and i agree with one of the posts... i also dont ever remember HHH being in a cage match id rate top 10 ever...

abyss/aj was a good match mabey top 10... but not top 5... AMW vs XXX is clearly top 5... one of the best ive ever seen...

I just remember thinking one thing watching that boring and repititive owen vs bret match: Are they actually gonna wrestle for longer than 15 seconds at a time before a cage escape attempt. Usually im the guy having the crack at another for hanging shit on the obvious number 1, but I just dont get why that match is so great. I really dont. I only ever seen the match and never the build up but fuck. I just cant rate it.

Posted By: KMaC (Guest)  on August 25, 2010 at 07:06 AM

Why all the hate against people who talk about matches they didn't see first time around?! That's like saying a historians word isn't worth the paper it's written on simply because they weren't there when it happened!

Grow up IWC, please.

I miss the good old days when a cage match was about keeping the competitors from escaping and keeping others from interfering.

Now, to win a cage match, you have to run away. Great concept. Two wrestlers that hate each other so much, they have a match designed so that the winner is the first one to run away.

I honestly don't understand why that Kong-Nakano match gets so much love, for me it just felt like they were killing time with random weapon shots until the big finish. And yes, the finish is legendary, but the match is so disappointing when compared to the stuff Akira Hokuto and Manami Toyota were putting out around the same period.

Although it has no place in a top 5, (Or top 25 for that matter) there once was a cage match featuring Luna Vachon vs Stevie Richards in ECW.

Not only was it highly entertaining throughout, but I'll forever remember Joey Styles naming a particular "wrestling hold" that Luna had on Richards as the "two handed testicular claw hold"...Awesome!!!!!

Would love to see a War Games DVD released by WWE some point in the future, strictly for the 92 match alone.

Having watched the Snuka-Muraco match from '83 recently, here are my thoughts. The pre-match hype and anticipation is there. Snuka flying off the top of the cage is an amazing image, and the match did influence Foley and others to get into the business.....but everything else in between leaves something to be desired. The match itself was way too short and the finish was kind of lame and came out of nowhere. You can hear the crowd at MSG booing in the end, and I don't think it was just because the bad guy won.

If the point of the match is to escape the cage first, why would you spend all your time beating up the other guy rather than just trying to get out at any opportunity? You could not win by pinfall or submission. Having a "regular wrestling match" makes no sense. That has actually always irked me about escape rules, I never understood why all escape cage matches didn't play out similarly to Bret/Owen.

That XXX vs. AMW cage match is unbelievable but like most TNA product it's high on spot value but low on psychology. The Starrcade match makes me all weepy eyed...it comes under the category WHEN WRESTLING WAS GOOD. Even knowing what I know now, I still watch that match and find it so easy to suspend my disbelief. The finish is brutality at it's best, and I love the way Magnum just casually slings the belt over his shoulder and fucks off without even looking back. Quality.

These people obviously don't know their wrestling history. What about Steamboat/Youngblood vs. Slaughter/Kernodle? What about Jimmy Snuka/Don Muraco? The first War Games on 7/4/87? The first Hell in a Cell between Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker? Undertaker vs. Mankind Hell in A Cell?

I can remember the Bret-Owen match more than any other cage match and I've only seen it once. I guess that means it would be my #1. Although for a while I remembered it with Owen winning because I was a huge Owen mark and despised Bret.

Bull Nakano vs. Aja Kong (AJW WrestleMarinpiad 1990)

If I remember correctly, that was the match where they used a motherfucking ninja sickle on each other. Insane.

I fail to see how competition is more entertaining than blood, violence, and hatred.

"Hell in a Cell IS NOT A CAGE MATCH!!!!!!!!!!!"

Its two pro-wrestlers fighting in a fucking cage. What would you call it?

If War Games counts, Hell in a Cell counts.

Ummm...War Games were fought IN A CAGE. Cage matches are fought IN A CAGE.
"Cages" have four sides, but the top is totally open. (One way to win is by climbing up and over the cage, thus escaping.)

Hell in a Cell is fully enclosed, including the top. There is no climbing out in order to get a win. (No "escape" as it were.) It's also a taller structure than a typical "cage".
Hence, it's not a "cage", it's a "cell". Not only is it not considered to be a cage match, it never has been.

Here is a copy/paste from the article that you commented on...

What part of that did you NOT understand?????

I am pissed that no one mentioned Flair/Sting vs. Funk/Muta with the Tower of Doom or whatever they called it...I think it was at Halloween havoc. It was supposedly electrified and Sting swung from a rope with an awesome cross body for the finish.

That match was awesome...No love for that?
