The Contentious Ten 08.30.10: Mick Foley Matches
Posted by Aaron Hubbard on 08.30.2010
From his WrestleMania 22 hardcore match with Edge and his 1998 HIAC match with the Undertaker to his 1998 Royal Rumble I Quit match with the Rock and even his Backlash 2004 battle with Randy Orton, 411's Aaron Hubbard counts down Mick Foley's best matches in the latest edition of the Contentious 10!
Today's list showcases a wrestler who, by all rights, I shouldn't even like. Hardcore wrestling has never really been my thing, but Mick Foley was so good at it that he forced it to become my thing. Whether he was Cactus Jack, Mankind, Dude Love or simply going by his real name, Foley was one of the greatest characters to ever grace a wrestling ring. He was able to create emotions in people, from his amazing "Anti-Hardcore" promos in ECW to his awesome first World Title win. He was able to shock people with dangerous stunts, or to pull them in with a great in-ring story. While I haven't been supportive of his last few years in TNA or even WWE for that matter, I still have great respect for what Mick Foley was. The good will always outweigh the bad.
X
Cactus Jack vs. Sting
Falls Count Anywhere Match, Beach Blast 1992
Yes, I know the commentary is in Japanese. And YES, I know the sound file is off. The match is good enough that this shouldn't bother you all that match, but if it does, buy Mick Foley's Greatest Hits & Misses and watch it on that. Actually, buy it anyway because it is awesome. This is one of Foley's early great matches, and one that he wouldn't surpass until coming to the WWE in 1996. I think what is often lost when talking about Cactus Jack is that he was a great brawler without the barbwire and fire. So before I get into all the exciting violent stuff with all the blood and toys, here's what Foley can do by himself.
Wow, that sounded entirely too sexual. I'm going back to the arcade with the other nerds. Maybe we'll have slushies after I beat my score on Galaga.
IX
Mick Foley, Edge & Lita vs.
Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer & Beulah
ECW One Night Stand 2006
There's your crazy death match-style weapons and violence for you. You sick freaks. Anyway, it would pretty much be sacrilege not to include a Terry Funk match here. Funk was the inspiration for Mick Foley's career, and they had several memorable battles in Japan, ECW and WWE. While their King of the Death Matches final is probably the most respected among tape collectors, I happen to have a fairly weak stomach for that sort of violence. Indeed, I didn't even watch most of these matches again for this list like I usually do. Once again, Edge and Foley stole the show at a major 2006 PPV, this time as teammates. This is way, WAY too violent for today's current PG push, but it still has fantastic storytelling, and Terry Funk. If you've wondered what people mean when they talk about the "it" factor, watch Terry Funk. No amount of recap can do Funk's body language justice.
VIII
Cactus Jack vs. Triple H
WWF Championship vs. Career Hell in a Cell Match, No Way Out 2000
Foley and Triple H had several great matches over the years, including a cage match at Summer Slam '97 and a street fight on RAW at Madison Square Garden that failed to make the list. However, this was their last singles match, and it was a great way to end it on. In many ways this is superior to Mick's more famous Hell in a Cell, as they actually had a match before the big spot where Foley went through the roof of the cell (this time on purpose). This was billed as having Mick Foley's career on the line, but that retirement wouldn't last a month and he's been competing on a semi-regular basis for the last six or seven years, so the match is kind of meaningless. Doesn't keep it from being fun to watch though.
VII
Mankind vs. The Rock
WWF Championship I Quit Match, Royal Rumble 1999
The match made infamous by "Beyond The Mat". I was tempted to put the RAW match where Mick won the WWF Title from The Rock on here simply because it is such a great moment (with a run-in by Austin that delivers an earsplitting, thunderous pop from the crowd), but this match is better. As I said, Mick practically worshiped Terry Funk, and since his favorite match ever is Terry Funk vs. Ric Flair in an I Quit Match, it should come as no surprise that he wanted to do an I Quit match of his own. The future partners had another great brawl that was typical of the Attitude Era, capped off by a brutal and memorable series of chair shots. Combined with Foley's defiant refuasl to give in and the screwjob finish, the match stands out as one of the best of 1999. I know that's not really saying much, but still, this was a great match.
VI
Mick Foley vs. Edge
Hardcore Match, Wrestlemania 22
Edge had won the WWE Championship from John Cena and given RAW a ratings boost in early 2006, but he wasn't penned in for Wrestlemania main events just yet. Instead, he ended up feuding with a returning Mick Foley and stealing the show at Wrestlemania 22. Foley had never really had an outstanding Wrestlemania performance, but this was his chance to rectify it, and give his friend Edge a career boost in the process. Edge and Foley used every trick in the book, from steel chairs to barbwire to thumbtacks, and capped it off with a flaming table. It was a great match that Foley can be proud of. If nothing else, it will be a long while before any Wrestlemania match comes close to being as violent and bloody as this one. That makes it stand out in a long list of excellent matches to take place at the big show.
The Mid-Column Mini-Column:
A Few Words For Luna Vachon
A couple months ago when I did my list of female managers, Luna Vachon was one of the first names that came to mind. Gertrude "Luna" Vachon was a member of the respected Vachon family, and was a very tough wrestler and valuable presence outside of the ring for wrestlers such as Bam Bam Bigelow, Goldust, Shawn Michaels and her ex-husband Gangrel. Vachon was a true character who stood out from the pack, and contributed more to women's wrestling than most will give her credit for. Were it not for the success of Luna as a woman who could be physical in the male-dominated world of wrestling, would McMahon have taken the risk he took with Chyna? If Luna wasn't the in-ring antagonist for Sable, would she have become the draw that paved the way for Trish Stratus to become so important to the company that women's wrestling HAD to be a priority? Luna legitimately scared me as a child, but I've always looked back on her fondly when going through old tapes. She had the "it" factor that made her something special. Rest in peace Luna, and thank you for entertaining me and countless others over the years. You will be missed.
V
Mankind vs. The Undertaker
Hell in a Cell, King of the Ring 1998
Sadly, this is the match that Mick Foley will always be remembered for. That isn't a knock on the match; it is a violent spectacle that has two of the most mind-blowing, sickening bumps in the history of professional wrestling, as well as an underrated brawl inside of the ring that people tend to gloss over. Certainly, if I took those risks I'd want people to remember them. But Foley is more than a crazy, tough guy who gets thrown off of cages. He was one of the sickest, most violent wrestlers ever, one of the greatest to ever handle a microphone, and competed in matches far better than this one. However, perhaps nothing is more memorable than this match. It gets placed over a few better matches simply because it is one of those matches you just have to see once.
IV
Dude Love vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin
In my opinion, this is the quintessential Attitude Era Match. This features one of my favorite Foley angles where he sold out to the man, became the cartoony champion Vince McMahon wanted, and tried to get the belt off of Steve Austin, the rebel who McMahon hated. With McMahon's support and the title in his sights, Foley finally expected to find everything he'd been denied: money, women, admiration and respect. Most people don't look back fondly on Dude Love, but I thought it was a great bit of Mick Foley's complex and engaging character. This match has everything the Attitude Era was known for; wild brawling between two extremely over stars, tons of overbooking, and Austin overcoming the odds to stay the champion. Unlike 90% of other situations where this style of match is used, everything works perfectly and I love every second of it.
III
Mick Foley vs. Randy Orton
Intercontinental Championship Hardcore Match, Backlash 2004
As you go through this list, you will find only one match where Mick Foley won, and he didn't even score the pinfall in that. Mick didn't have the best win-loss record in the world, and that was fine; like the other half of The Rock & Sock Connection, Mick knew that he could lose to anyone and stay over, so he made it his goal to get other people over. He was a star-maker that was so good at what he did that he became a star himself. Here, we see perhaps the best example of Foley's ability to make a star. Randy Orton had been pegged for greatness ever since Ric Flair and Triple H took him in as their protege, but this was the match that made him a star. Orton had already pinned Mick at Wrestlemania XX, but this was no handicap match; this was a bloody, violent war. Orton would win again, and would talk about this victory for years to come. Foley considers this his favorite match, and I can understand why; he got into excellent shape, he reminded us of the hardcore, violent Foley of old, and he ate the pinfall and made another star.
II
Mankind vs. Shawn Michaels
WWF Championship Match, In Your House: Mind Games
I remember running through the comments two weeks ago on the Angle list and someone asked the IWC to point out a better match with a crappy ending than Angle-Austin from Summer Slam '02. I instantly thought of this match, which in my opinion is one of the absolute greatest of all time despite having an awful cop-out finish. This isn't just a match with great technical wrestling (which Shawn provides) or insane spots (which they both provided). The match is great because both men are creative in the way they wrestle each other. I've watched this match around two dozen times, and I always catch something new. Whatever your wrestling tastes, you'll find something to love about this match. I often use the phrase "not a perfect match". This match WAS perfect until the finish. I could have put this at #1 without a second thought, but I feel the next match better showcases everything Foley is about.
I
Cactus Jack vs. Triple H
WWF Championship Street Fight, Royal Rumble 2000
I was tempted to say that this match is the one Mick Foley should have retired on, but after compiling the list and realizing that 40% of it took place after this one, I decided not to. At any rate, this was an incredible match that served as a major turning point in the careers of both participants. Foley had spent much of the last year in a comical position, a human muppet that was more famous for Mr. Socko than barbwire, steel chairs and thumbtacks. However, as his career appeared to be coming to an end, he brought back the Cactus Jack that bled buckets in Japan and set Terry Funk on fire in ECW, so that our last memories of him could be of the Foley that was the best brawler of the 1990s. Triple H, on the other hand, was looking to become the top heel of the WWF in 2000, but hadn't a match that truly made him a bonafide main eventer who could wrestle anyone in the company and draw money. The result was, in my opinion, the best mix of classic old-school storytelling and brutal hardcore brawling ever shown in a wrestling ring. Since that exact mix is what I admired most about Foley, I feel this is the best showcase of Foley, and thus it tops the list.
When was the last 'normal' good Mick Foley match? Glorified stuntman.....

Honorable Mention: Foley vs. Rocky Balboa cardboard cutout on iMPACT

I can't really argue with any of the picks, but come on! Use a little bit of originality with these lists.
Not just "insert guy's" best matches!
Under-rated PPV shows? Surprising rookie debuts? Mark out moments? Most emotional? Best storyline payoffs?
Any of them would be better than the usual 'same ol, same ol' every week.
Posted By: Max (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 11:01 PM
Foley vs Orton at 2004 is Foley's best match. It made Randy Orton more than Evolution and Undertaker did, and proved that Foley could still be somewhat of a threat in pro wrestling.
Posted By: Cactus (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 11:06 PM
Foley is God. There was only ever going to be one choice for the best match. Cactus Jack vs HHH was one of the best WWE feuds ever done.
Posted By: Finn (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 11:08 PM
What the Funk? No Terry at all is instant fail. And Mick would agree.
Posted By: Jim (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 11:14 PM
I know I'm not going to get any backup here, but this list was the worst one of these yet. So many...I don't know if sacrilegious is the word, but certainly unworthy matches. THAT'S the Terry Funk match you pick?? Triple H is on there twice?? Number one is like a slap in the face to anyone who followed Foley prior to his WWE signing. The only good part of that match is the poetic justice when Triple H got that big splinter in his leg...serves him right for hitting Foley with the real barbed-wire board and then pussing out by taking stunt-wire shots. If he wasn't willing to take the same shots, they shouldn't have had Foley hit him with it at all. Instead its like "Oh wow, Triple H is as hardcore as Foley!" but it was total bullshit.
Posted By: No (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 11:21 PM
What about his wild brawls he had teaming with Maxx Payne and Kevin Sullivan against the Nasty Boys at Spring Stampede and Slamboree 94? Those matches where so wild and crazy you could picture that Paul Heyman in Philly during Slamboree was watching and taking down notes.
Posted By: Michael (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 11:32 PM
I still think that Cactus Jack/Triple H hell in a cell is overrated, but their Royal Rumble match deserves number one. In fact, that's probably my number one Triple H match. He plays the cocky champion out of his element absolutely perfectly.
Also, as far as I'm concerned that Austin pop during the Rock/Mankind title match is number one on the list of wrestling pops all time by sheer volume.

The omission of the Ric Flair I Quit match from Summerslam '06 renders this list void and invalid.

It's crazy how he lost every one of these matches except one. I guess it's the mark of a true entertainer, although Foley was never praised for his ability to win.

I kind of agree with you. The end rant makes you look a little butt hurt but thats cool. Facts are this list just reassures that as much as I really do not like Hunter, when people make all-time list of all the modern stars, he is gonna be on ALOT of them.
Posted By: Guest#6119 (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 01:11 AM
I think the problem is Hubbard watches the old school matches but does not know the story behind them (unlike the matches in the mid-late 90s). I am not trying to bash him in any way; I do not think he is a bad writer, but he either has a hard on for late 90s to current time wrestling, or like I said, he does not know the story behind the old school matches.
I say this not for this list only, but all his list have felt that way. I always use Funk-Flair as an example of new school fans thinking that match is not as great as people say. The match might not have as much violence as a CZW match, but the way the feud built to the match and the way they told a story relevant to the plot, makes it unparalleled to any I Quit match and other gimmick match I have seen.
I mean, how can you put the ECW 2006 match above Sting-Foley and also not mention matches like Vader-Foley, Foley/Payne vs. Nasty Boys, among other great Foley matches?
The other problem I see with these lists is he choices wrestlers who any casual fan could brainstorm a coherent list in their head. I think it choosing wrestlers like a Buddy Rodgers, Lou Thesz, Crippler Ray Stevens, Bruiser Brody, Pat O Connor, Dory Funk, or a Danny Davis would make a much more a compelling original read than a Rey Mysterio or a Mick Foley.

"I happen to have a fairly weak stomach for that sort of violence. Indeed, I didn't even watch most of these matches again for this list like I usually do"
Wuss!

I think too many participants of the Edge/Foley v Dreamer/Funk tag were too broken down to work to make the list.
Posted By: Oh! Lymping Hero (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 01:45 AM
I can't argue with your choices. It's your opinion and your list. I do agree with Max, who suggested coming up with some more original lists. I have seen close to a dozen Best of Foley lists (several on this site) and they have more or less the same matches in more or less the same order. Ideas for original lists in addition to what Max suggested:
* Best Six-man tag matches
* Best matches involving only bad/mediocre workers (e.g. Kane vs. Albert from a few years ago gets a lot of praise)
* Best blade jobs (you may have done this one, I forget)
Posted By: Eric von Erich (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 01:54 AM
His tag title matches against the Nasty Boys?
His match against Mikey Whipwreck?
Any of his other matches with Undertaker?
Cactus and Mikey vs The Eliminators?
Any of his matches with Funk one on one?
No Vader? Seriously?
What about that epic match against the Franchise Shane Douglas before he left for the WWF?
Maybe a match with Orndorff in WCW?
Cactus and Raven vs Dreamer and Funk is a HUGE OMISSION!
You were obviously not privileged to watch Foley's career unfold in real time, you just picked the one's you like best off of youtube and it shows.

I loved the Orton V Foley match. Orton's shocked reaction to ending up on the thumbtacks is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen

Great List, though I'd swoop 1 and 2 around. Though the street fight with Triple H MADE him a legit main-eventer for life from that point forward, the Shawn/Foley match is simply better with a frenetic pace and lots of brutality.

And the best talent in wrestling are ones that don't always have 'normal' matches. 'Normal' matches are for jobbers and midcard talent that get stuck around the 2-2.5 star mark. Foley created some of the most unique storytelling seen in mainstream professional wrestling in the last 20 years...

Michaels/Foley should have been number 1.
If they had put a clean finish on that, it would also have been Shawn's best and even perhaps the best in the history of the company!
Would have been easy to do as well. Sweet Chin Music out of nowhere...the commentators could sell it as Mankind being too interested in hurting Shawn and not winning the match. After the match, Foley beats the snot out of Michaels before Taker makes the save.
Mankind saves face to take his first definitive loss at the hands of Taker and Shawn moves on to Sid, Bret and Heeldom.

The HHH/Foley cell match is boring as shit. Even then, HHH was just cutting and pasting spots from other cell matches. It's by far his worst major match from this time period. Even his chain match with Kane at Judgment Day 01 is better. And Foley is 20,000x the wrestler HHH is so you might see where including that match, and it being so high on this list is an issue.
Those two had a lot of good ones, some of which people haven't seen much of. I agree with "Max" you need to start diversifying these lists. 90+% of these matches are on the Hardcore Edition of Greatest Hits and Misses.
I love the idea of this column but it could be much better than it is.
Posted By: Its me its me its AARP (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 08:28 AM
All of these matches are definite candidates, but as with many others, I felt there were some matches you could have included, such as the 1994 tag wars with the Nasty Boyz, particularly the Chicago Streetfight, which was a runner up MOTY for PWI and might have won if not for the WMX ladder match. I also felt you could have included the Foley/Funk encounter from Raw 98 that gave Dude Love a title shot.
Posted By: Michael L (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 08:37 AM
Solid list, but I'd personally put the WM22 match in the top 3. I never got the love for the Mind Games match w/ HBK, in all honesty. It's a great piece of character work by Foley, who had really just gotten used to the Mankind gimmick, but other than that...meh. It was nothing that wasn't getting topped in WCW and ECW at the time.
Posted By: AndrewCrow (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 08:48 AM
That match was one of the first wrestling matches I saw of the attitude era, and I'm proud to say it was one of the matches that got me hooked on the WWF.

Gotta agree with Vader vs. Cactus, and Foley vs.Rocky Balboa. What about Flair vs Foley from Summerslam? Just watching Flair bleeding buckets and going batshit crazy is a lot of fun.

That Rumble match with Hunter is ALWAYS rated way too high whenever it's talked about. There are at least 5 better matches on the list. I don't see how anyone can watch Mind Games, Over the Edge, or Backlash and still say Rumble is his best.
Posted By: Ugh (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 09:23 AM
The Royal Rumble match is awesome, deserving of top-3 on this list, but the HHH-Foley Hell in the Cell was junk and shouldn't be on a top 10 list for anything.

i think the title of this column should be changed to:
The Contentious Ten 08.30.10: Mick Foley Matches That People In North America Saw
if that's the case, then this list is great. plus, #1 is correct this time around.
however, you are neglecting every match foley had not in north america, and that's unfortunately wrong. his matches in japan are legendary, not jsut for the sheer violence. it's too bad that we as north americans don't get to see many of those...if we would, this list would be totally different.

I'll give Hubbard crap when warranted but this is a very good list full of 4 to 5 star matches. Sure him and Vader had some good stiff matches, but they didn't hit 4 stars in my mind...Funk was entertaining as all hell, but his matches with Foley were gorefests not 5 star classics people.
As for the tag match vs the nastys, great match, prob could be on here, but time has not been kind to it.
The HBK Foley match is classic, and the better wrestling display, but I agree that his match at the Rumble should be on top. It was everything Foley was about and some.
The Ric Flair Summerslam match was the most disappointing match I have seen either of them in for quite some time...besides their Vengeance match.

First list you've done that I pretty much agree with down the line. Hell, 1-4 can be ordered in any fashion and you'd still have a pretty damn good argument.
As an aside, that Austin pop during Foley's title win is the loudest I've ever heard. Now I've heard people say it was piped in since it was taped but there is changing THE WAY THE CROWD MOVES LIKE A FUCKING TIDALWAVE as Stone Cold BMFs his way down the ramp.

jesus christ. I love how when people's opinions clash with those of the column writer, it instantly renders everything in the column wrong. most of the people who post on here are whiny motherfuckers.
me included :p

Do you know what contentious means?

Seriously, by mostly ignoring his pre-WWE career you're missing out on a lot of great stuff. The Cactus-Vader Texas death match from Halloween Havoc '93 for starters. The falls count anywhere match at Slamboree '94 where Cactus & Kevin Sullivan captured the WCW tag belts (Foley's first major title win) from the Nasty Boys with an assist from NHL legend Dave "the Hammer" Schultz; another falls count anywhere match in WCW against Paul Orndorff; the King of the Deathmatch final against Terry Funk; and he did some great stuff in WCCW in early 1989 as part of the late Skandor Akbar's Devastation Inc. both in solo action and teaming with the underrated "Gorgeous" Gary Young against the likes of the Von Erichs, Eric Embry, Chris Adams, Jimmy Jack Funk, Matt Borne, Steve & Shaun Simpson & Jeff Jarrett.

I also like the idea of a most underrated PPV list.
Backlash 2000, Fully Loaded 2000, Vengeance '03 and Unforgiven '06 immediately spring to mind.
Posted By: Guest#3091 (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 11:25 AM
This list reads more like Mick Foley's Best WWF/E matches, not his best overall career matches.
Posted By: Heebies (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 11:28 AM
there must be a mistake. sting made someone's top 10 match list and it's not ric flair. i had no idea he had ever done anything memorable in his career.

Same old same old.

Pretty Wonderful vs. Foley and Sullivan, duh!

Cane Dewey!

Not just "insert guy's" best matches!
Any of them would be better than the usual 'same ol, same ol' every week.
Posted By: Max (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 11:01 PM
Isn't the sole purpose of this column to highlight a wrestler's top ten matches?
Posted By: SS87 (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 12:36 PM
Where is Cactus vs Vader?
Posted By: Wolve (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 01:22 PM
When was the last 'normal' good Mick Foley match? Glorified stuntman.....
Posted By: Question (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 10:54 PM
All it looks like another flair marks has his feeling hurt. Why don't you go cry on the nature boy shoulder maybe he'll let you have free ride on space mountain, just don't loan him any money!
PS what you faverite flair match, what a moment it dosen't matter there all the same
Posted By: Johndoe (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 11:51 PM
Since you didn't answer, I think you proved the dude's point spot on.
Posted By: Black Scorpion (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 02:51 AM
That is the a moronic theory Black Scorpion. Question is right because Johndoe didn’t have an answer for him?
Ex:
The New York Yankees Suck!
You Suck!
AHA, Thank you for proving my point, by not making one yourself!
The answer is actually His match Rock n Sock Connection vs. Evolution at Wrestlemania XX. And to say that him being carried to a good match by a rusty Rock, old flair, and two not yet ripe youngsters would immediately discredit any great matches Flair has had with anybody in a long long time.
And the question is bullshit to begin with? When was the last time Stephen King wrote a great, non-horror novel?
As for the list….coulda used more Cactus Jack vs. Carlito at Taboo Tuesday. J

Good list. I think it's easy to dimiss Foley by saying he relied too heavily on blood, weapons, and "stunts". Foley's real strengths as a pro wrestler and entertainer came from his devotion to detail, in terms of character, emotion, and, most importantly, storytelling. This shows both in his work in the ring and in his promos on the mic. Truely one of the greats.

Obviously I wasn't there for the taping, but am I the only one who thinks the Austin pop in the match where Mick won his 1st world title was a classic case of McMahon telling the editors to enhance it?
Posted By: Guest 576 (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 02:10 PM
You know what? I completely agree with this list. Probably would have included Cactus' wwe debut against HHH (which was fantastic)
Posted By: rorster1986 (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 02:26 PM
No mention of the RAW match falls count anywhere against Terry Funk??
MASSIVE FAIL.

I'm going to say no to that. If you listen to the crowd on Smackdown the enhancing has a distinct sound that is blatantly phony.
The Rock was so hated and Austin was so loved at that point that when the glass shattered that was a genuine reaction from the crowd.
The only thing I'd think is maybe the mics were turned up a little but that pop was pretty darn legit.
Posted By: snapple (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 03:33 PM
I can't really argue with any of the picks, but come on! Use a little bit of originality with these lists.
Not just "insert guy's" best matches!
Under-rated PPV shows? Surprising rookie debuts? Mark out moments? Most emotional? Best storyline payoffs?
Any of them would be better than the usual 'same ol, same ol' every week.
Posted By: Max (Guest) on August 29, 2010 at 11:01 PM
That would render the list pointless.
Posted By: Gozzo (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 04:11 PM
Orton did a hell of a job in that match taking some sick bumps of his own people always make it sound like foley just did just his usual insane stunts and orton just happened to be in the match putting him in those positions. Orton became a star that night because he showed he could take a hell of a beating as well and still come out on top.

Hubbard has really broken on to the main event scene here at 411mania. He worked his way up with his WrestleMania stories and the torch was passed and now he's doing top ten lists and main eventing the wrestling articles.
Posted By: Phil (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 06:22 PM
i'm a big foley fan, but that shawn michaels match blows, i would have put the Ric Flair I Quit
Posted By: Guest#5327 (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 07:14 PM
Great List, but I really would've switched the top 2. Foley vs. HBK is INSANELY Good.
Posted By: sych (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 07:14 PM
on rock foley at royal rumble "the match stands out as one of the best of 1999. I know that's not really saying much"
yeah because the following 3 ppvs didnt have 4* plus main events plus a whole heap of great free tv matches. But of course as 1999 was maybe the wwfs most successful years this hack has to shit all over it
Posted By: Guest#3901 (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 07:32 PM
When is the last time Mick Foley had a good match that didn't have any hardcore stips? He is incapable of having a good match that isn't in a cage or doesn't involve him mutilating himself. It's so cheap. He's no better than the degenerates in CZW. I hate Ric Flair as well but I acknowledge the fact that he is a great wrestler, a legend. Mick Foley is a glorified backyard wrestler, a bum.

That's also what I feel. I enjoyed the article talking about "top 10 RR elliminations", "top 10 super tag teams". Not just "top 10 matches".
"rookie debuts" is a great suggestion; a list that includes Del Rio and Carlito.
I also would like to have an top ten "wrestling strategies", like Brock Lesnar chair shot Kurt Angle in the iron man match to get DQed, but it paid off.
Posted By: Guest#0314 (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 09:40 PM
Foley should be given credit for the stars he made during his tenure... w/o his feuds with HHH, Rock, Edge, and Orton.. would they have gone onto bigger/better things? and his matches w/austin and Michaels gave them boosts into their title reigns... you can call him stuntman.. or question his wrestling skills.. he does know how to make stars.. (although he had yet to make one in his TNA reign.. his starmaking days are probably behind him)
Posted By: sdmcc (Guest) on August 30, 2010 at 09:43 PM
Cactus Jack vs Shane Douglas had an amazing ending.
Foley / Payne vs Nasty Boyz should have been included.
If Foley had a list for top feuds, Vader would be up there.
His match with Sting seemed like it was thrown in there so it wouldn't read like a top ten WWE matches list. Most of Hubbard's lists are just that anyway(other than obvious ones like Mysterio's best match being against Guerrero at Halloween Havoc).

most successful because of WM15, and all downhill after that... 6 pack challenge? bait and switch austin/HHH/Rock? McMahon "retires" after Taker/Austin pt 5? boiler room brawl 2? big show/bossman? I could go on, but its making me too sad...

On September 27, 1999, Mick Foley helped WWF Raw achieve some of its highest ratings ever with a segment featuring himself (as Mankind) and The Rock. The segment called "This is Your Life" included Mankind bringing out people from The Rock's past, such as a home economics teacher, gym teacher and old high school girlfriend. The "This is Your Life" segment remains one of the highest rated segments in Raw viewership history, with an 8.4 rating. Picked from wiki yes but these couple of lines briefly tells you MICKISLEGEND.

That was because of The Rock, not Mick Foley.
