411’s Wrestler of the Week 08.30.10: Week 22
Posted by Larry Csonka on 08.30.2010

Welcome to Week 22, Year SIX, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…

Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…

1st - 5
2nd - 4
3rd - 3
4th - 2
5th - 1

If you are wondering how some of the writers decide who to vote for, please check out our Wrestler of the Week Supplemental Column!

Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…

1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1

...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year at WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…

Larry Csonka
1) Masato Yoshino and Naruki Doi
Over the weekend, Dragon gate ran the semis and finals of the Summer Adventure Tag League tournament. Masato Yoshino and Naruki Doi defeated Susumu Yokosuka & K-Ness in the semifinals, and then went onto defeat Ryo Saito & Genki Horiguchi to win the tournament. Doi and Yoshino are a sick tag team, and deserve the praise for winning the tournament.

2) Suwama: Over the weekend, Suwama defeated Minoru Suzuki to become the new All Japan Pro Wrestling's Triple Crown champion. You can't argue when a guy wins a major championship in a company, and Suwama deserves some love this week.
3) Frightmare: Frightmare defeated Lince Dorado in the finals of the Young Lions Cup tournament to win this year's tournament from CHIKARA.
4) Kane
5) Davey Richards

Ryan Byers
1) Masato Yoshino
More than any other wrestler in any other company in the world, Masato Yoshino has been on a roll this summer. In June, he was part of a team that won Dragon Gate's six man tag team titles, referred to as the Open the Triangle Gate. In July, he won the company's main singles championship, the Open the Dream Gate, which he still holds today. In August, he ended the promotion's interpromotional feud with Osaka Pro Wrestling by defeating O-Pro's Tigers Mask for the Open the Brave Gate, which is DG's version of a lighter weight title. Finally, this past weekend, Yoshino and his partner Naruki Doi won the Summer Adventure Tag League, a massive tag team tournament hosted by Dragon Gate on an annul basis. Yoshino is on top of the world right now, and, with not much happening in the US big leagues this week, he's an easy pick for number one.

2) Suwama: All Japan Pro Wrestling isn't as big of a wrestling promotion as it used to be, but there is perhaps no title with a more epic history than its Triple Crown. This week, Suwama won that Triple Crown for the second time, defeating the always-dangerous Minoru Suzuki.
3) Frightmare: The tiny CHIKARA wrestler Frightmare was named 411mania's Rookie of the year in our 2009 Year End Awards. This Sunday, FM took things to another level by winning the annual Young Lions Cup tournament hosted by his home promotion. Frightmare had to outlast a field of competitors from across the country and in fact the whole world to take home the Cup, though the biggest victory was probably knocking off the evil Lince Dorado from Der Bruderschaft des Kreuzes in the finals.
4) KENSO (Kenzo Suzuki)
5) PAC

Michael Bauer
1) Masato Yoshino and Naruki Doi
The US scene didn't have much, so I have to look at the biggest tournament in Japan this weekend. Yoshino and Doi won the Summer Adventure Tag League, besting Ryo Saito & Genki Horiguchi in the finals. As Byers said, Yoshino has been on a roll lately and Doi is a great benefactor of that.

2) PAC: If you were to tell me he would win the vacant Open the Brave Gate Title, I would have laughed. But yet, it happened. Huge win for him.
3) Davey Richards: Two huge wins for him in Ring of Honor. In beating Kevin Steen and Tyler Black, he is now #3 in the Pick Six.
4) Suwama
5) Frightmare

Steve Cook
1) Dashing Cody Rhodes: DCR was all over SyFy on Tuesday night. Although it didn't involve wrestling, his guest-star appearance on Warehouse 13 was a pretty good piece of business. I think he could have a future in acting if he chose to pursue it. On the wrestling end of things, he continued to build a feud with hopeful NXT Season 2 winner Kaval while defeating MVP in a lengthy match. He didn't win any championships or tournaments, but it was still an important week in the future development of his career.

2) Alberto Del Rio: ADR didn't win any championships either, but he had a productive second week on WWE television. He continued his feud with the ever-popular Rey Mysterio and looked impressive in defeating a local competitor that some of you might know as Alex Koslov. The Last Honest Man is becoming a big deal on WWE Smackdown pretty quickly.
3) Sara Del Rey: SDR scored a pinfall victory over CHIKARA Icon Mike Quackenbush on Night One of the Young Lions' Cup. She used the finishing move of Manami Toyota to get it done, sending a message to the Japanese joshi legend that's coming to CHIKARA in September. I'm sure the chance to work with Toyota is a dream come true for DEATH REY.
4) Doi & Yoshino
5) Frightmare

Aaron Hubbard
1) Frightmare
Mainstream wrestling was in a holding pattern this week, but CHIKARA ran one of it's biggest events of the year with the Young Lion's Cup. Frightmare, 411's Rookie of the Year 2009, defeated Lince Dorado of the Bruderschaft, his biggest singles win to date, and a win that is likely to turn the tide in CHIKARA's war with the Bruderschaft.

2) Masato Yoshino & Naruki Doi: Speed Muscle won Dragon Gate's Summer Adventure Tag League, defeating longtime rivals Ryo Saito and Genki Horiguchi.
3) PAC: Won the vacated Open the Brave Gate Title in Dragon Gate. The last non-Japanese wrestler to hold that tile is Evan Bourne. A shocking win for the Man that Gravity Forgot.
4) The Miz
5) Sara Del Ray

Chad Nevett
1) Frightmare
Won the 2010 Young Lion's Cup in CHIKARA. Big win and that it happened over a member of Der Bruderschaft des Kreuzes makes it even bigger.

2) Masato Yoshino & Naruki Doi: This tag team won Dragon Gate's Summer Adventure Tag League over another fantastic team, Ryo Saito and Genki Horiguchi.
3) "Dashing" Cody Rhodes: Won a pretty great match against MVP during the entire second half of this week's NXT. He's definitely looking better and better, and this match really proved it.
4) PAC
5) Davey Richards

Andy Critchell
1) Frightmare
For a young guy on the indy scene, winning the Young Lions Cup is a huge accomplishment and a real feather in your cap. Chikara is a promotion that knows how to build on a big career altering move like this so I expect big things to come from young Frightmare.

2) Cody Rhodes: I gotta say, I am stared to get really excited for Cody's future. His new "dashing" gimmick has produced some funny vignettes and in a weird way it seems to have given him more confidence in the ring. His match against MVP on NXT was the first singles match of that length I can recall for Cody and he really shined. To top it off he had a guest spot on the very entertaining Warehouse 13 (a show you should be watching) so all in all he had a very good week.
3) Zach Ryder: OK, I know this seems like an odd pick but just follow me here. Getting squashed by WWE Champion Sheamus didn't to anything to hurt Ryder as he was already very low on the card to begin with. What that match did do though was get Ryder some mic time on Raw as well as get him on TV at the beginning of what is usually the highest rated segment of the show every week. I mean everyone watches the end of Raw and when they flipped to see the end of the show they saw Zach Ryder. Call me crazy, but we might start seeing more of Ryder as he tried to get revenge on Sheamus. Successful pushes have been built on less.
4) ORTON
5) Suwama

Ronnie LaFianza
1) Frightmare
Alright, so Frightmare picked up some huge victories this past week. Let's have a look. First off, he defeated Brendan Michael Thomas, who eliminated him from the same tournament last year. The same night, he won a six man elimination match, lastly pinning Akira Tozawa to move onto the finals. Then, in the finals of the tournament, he was able to defeat Lince Dorado. Not only does that mean he wins the tourny, but that was also Chikara's first major victory in their war against BDK. That's a pretty damn awesome couple of days if you ask me.

2) "Dashing" Cody Rhodes: Cody has a pretty big night last Tuesday. Not only did he have a guest appearance on Warehouse 13, he also, just moments prior, defeated MVP in a pretty damn lengthy match, probably the longest television match we've witnessed in a while. Good stuff for Cody, and he could definitely be on to bigger and better things sooner rather than later.
3) Motor City Machine Guns: The Guns absolutely tore the house down with Generation Me on Impact, and managed to pick up the victory. They continue their huge wave of momentum, and it's going to take something fierce in order to dethrone the champs.
4) Masato Yoshino/Naruki Doi
5) Davey Richards

Jeremy Thomas
1) Cody Rhodes
The DASHING One has been top-notch this week with a big win on NXT over MVP that dominated that show and just great general character work. The promos he's done to get his character over have been great and well...he's simply been DASHING.

2) Frightmare: Frightmare won the Young Lions Cup and that's huge for the guy. It's a boost to his career and I can see it parleying into bigger things for him.
3) Suwama: Suwama won the Triple Crown for his second time, beating Minoru Suzuki. I know our commenters love to hate on Japan but hey, they're not me and I have a world of respect for the Triple Crown. Kudos to Suwama.
4) The Miz/Alberto Del Rio
5) Sara Del Ray

Summer Adventure Tag League - sounds like a cross of South Park references, the WTF wrestling episode and the Super Adventure Club (you know - the ones who kidnapped and brainwashed Chef into becoming a child moelster).

    That's all I got.

Lol. I don't disagree with any of this, but I have a feeling a shitstorm of "who??" and "indies/japan don't matter" is heading this direction...

But good to see the writers of this column aren't deterred by bitches complaining because they are "selective wrestling fans".

Instead, they should be in the "independent cheap ass twisty midget wrestler of the week that no-one except sweaty geeks care about"

"Frightmare"? Really? So does he dress up as a dragon, or an insect? Nobody gives a shit about what happens in CHIKARA, not now, not ever. They can't even draw 200 fans, perform in run-down high school gyms, and have shitty storylines revolving around magical spells and mythical monsters.

Watching these same smarks criticise PG WWE when they like to watch guys dressed as insects pretending to cast spells on each other is just laughable. CHIKARA is fucking garbage and is the most irrelevant of all the irrelevant indy feds. "Young Lions Cup"? LMAO. Chungles's employee of the month badge from McDonalds is a more significant achievement than that.

Then we have the usual game of sad smarks trying to out-obscure each other by using no-name japs as jerk-off material. Nobody gives a shit who won the "Summer Adventure Tag League tournament", in fact anybody who even knows what that is should just slit their wrists now and get their miserable lives over with. Byers in particular must be the saddest virgin alive, I bet his parents are ashamed at how their son turned out to be such a worthless, basement-dwelling uber-nerd.

Finally, LOL at how you all write as if these guys actually do beat each other in genuine competitions. It's all pre-determined, the only thing that matters to wrestling is drawing money and selling product - and these nobodies you all love so much couldn't draw flies to shit.

You are all probably the same morons who defend Chris Benoit The Child Killer because had "good workrate". Douchebags. You internet virgin indy/japan fanboys are the lowest form of humanity.

So will we ever get to see the highly-anticipated (by nobody) match-up Frightmare vs BxB Hulk? I reckon such a big money match could draw at least 30 people, maybe even 40 if there isn't a Dungeons & Dragons game on that night. Perhaps that would pay for a new trampoline. Of course, they would still have to be out of the venue by 8pm though, the high school gym needs to be prepared for next day's under-9 basketball game.

it isn't being selective...it is being honest.

Chikara is a glorified backyard fed that only has exposure on the internet.

Mexican and Japanese promotions are only accessible online.

Just because I don't plant my ass in front of my computer and watch foreign wrestling or shitty TV-G rated shit from Chikara doesn't mean i am not a wrestling fan.

it just means that i don't wish to watch foreign promotions and shitty spotfests.

that said, it is an absolute joke lumping in some hack from Chikara in with Mexican, Japanese and North American big league wrestlers.

it is really easy to sell out a 50 person capacity American Legion ballroom, but it takes something more to sell out the TNA (PPV) average 2000 up to the WWE (PPV) level of 20 000 let alone the size of crowds you can get in other countries.

fuck Chikara, and i hope both fans of that shit are violently and repeatedly ass raped by JBL's longhorn limo.

Sheamus retains the WWE in record fashion and doesn't get a single vote? Are you people delusional or something?

It's a undeniable fact that anything that happens in the WWE is bigger than everything, so WWE wrestlers should ALWAYS get more votes than most of these vanilla midget jobbers that no one outise the internet cares about.

It's a joke that Sheamus, the WWE Champion and the most important man in pro wrestling right now, only has 16 points and is behind a bunch of people who have and will never accomplish 1/10 of the stuff he has done.

    What a joke!

CHIKARA is fucking garbage and is the most irrelevant of all the irrelevant indy feds. "Young Lions Cup"? LMAO. Chungles's employee of the month badge from McDonalds is a more significant achievement than that."

this is absolutely accurate in every respect.

most of the CHIKARA marks are shitting on the PG WWE as well as TNA, but what kind of shit are THEY watching?

I cut out the troll bait about Benoit, since the guy who wrote it doesn't understand 'non compos mentis' and would understand the definition of it even less. Needless to say, you can't blame those who are unable to control their actions because of brain damage.

    but anyway, i digress

The points about CHIKARA are 100% dead on the money.

Flopping around the ring doing pointless spots doesn't in anyway negate the fact you are dressed like an ant and throwing magical invisible hand grenades as your finisher.

and watching it certianly doesn't give you a leg to stand on when it comes to shitting on the WWE's PG rating.

Dude, give it the fuck up already. You post the same fucking shit every time the focus is on indy wrestling and you don't see any of the writers on this site changing anything do you? YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME.

You comment on how indy marks are the lowest form of life yet EVERYDAY you make sure to track down news items focusing on indy wrestling and then take the time out to write painfully predictable insults about blandness, midgets or high school gyms.

I do realize you're probably 14 fucking years old and you feel obligated to defend your likes and bash other peoples interests due to your insecurities and lack of social life but you look like a douche bag. Seriously. Fuck off and do your homework or something.

MCMG could put on 5-Star-Melt-Your-Face-Off-Classics for the next 52 weeks but until TNA actually ELEVATES them then they should not get any type of consideration.

Basically MCMG and Beer Money had five matches just to have matches. They didn't mean shit to TNA so who cares? Neither team has been moved up the card nor will they be. Those "great matches" may as well have not even happened.

The angry posts this week are pretty damn funny. I'm just looking at the end of year rankings, and really wondering how Bryan is at number 5. As far as big wins go this year I can't recall any besides his involvement in the Nexus match. This really does show how biased this voting can be sometimes. He hasn't held a major title this year, been released, showed up on some indy dates, and now just come back for a few weeks. Sheamus defended the most popular wrestling promotion in the worlds flagship show title and is mentioned by no one? Who cares if it was a jobber being squashed, he still had the belt to defend in the first place. Maybe one day he can win the "wet leaves of fall and pumkin time cup". I'm sure thats what his live long dream is.

They definitely do not have the national, headline-grabbing acclaim of Frightmare's victory.

Frightmare kicks ass, and I can't believe he won Young Lions! If you read the criteria for WotW, it should be pretty clear he deserves this spot.

Unless you're working at home on your faux-corporate douchebag Michael Cole heel commentator routine, you should definitely check out Chikara, which features some really incredible matches between some of the best wrestlers in the world. A certain Bryan Danielson has done a ton of work with Chikara, and presumably everyone on this site will shortly become very familiar with his incredible work.

sorry, CHIKARA isn't anything worth watching until they get rid of the insect infestation in the tag team scene.

seriously...how can anyone over 8 think that what goes on in CHIKARA isn't the worst shit in wrestling right now.

between the giant ants, invisible grenades and the magic spells...well...let's just say the only thing missing is the Burt and Ernie grudge match.

LOL! To be honest, you've just summed up why CHIKARA fucking sucks so much. Just look at that guy. Look at him. He looks like a homeless pedophile wearing a $1 halloween costume. There is no way anyone can actually watch a shitty, high-school gym event with losers like that performing and then try and argue on the internet that it's a great fed and anything that happens there is relevant. CHIKARA deserves no recognition, EVER, it is fucking pathetic.

Now I remember why I stopped coming to this column every week. The column itself is fine, but the commenters are a bunch of whiney bitches. Instead of actually trying to learn more about the wrestling world beyond WWE and TNA they just bitch and complain whenever its brought up. Also, I love how WWE/TNA marks try to say no one has heard of indy wrestlers when CLEARLY THE PEOPLE WHO WROTE THE COLUMN YOU JUST READ HAVE!

    Logic fail. IWC fail.

I just looked up what the Young Lions Cup actually is. Seems to be for those guys that have wrestled less than 50 matches professionally, which is a nice idea, but the guy has been wrestling since 2002, so your telling me after 8 years in the ring this guy still hasn't had 50 pro matches? Probably to busy working on his costume to make to matches huh?

Really though, the comment section is funny, if you don't take a look at the comments laugh and brush it off, then your taking this way to seriously, unless of course your actually involved in some small backyard fed and are waiting for you cred.

feel free to nominate people from the indies, but mention people from TNA and WWE is as well atleast (despite this being a pretty slow week), simple becuase no-one from the indies has a shot at winning. And I really don't want Swagger to win.

Zach Ryder jobbing to Sheamus is still a hundred times more relevant than anything that happened in that shitty CHIKARA fed. Watching you losers jerk off to guys in crappy costumes flipping around in high school gyms for gas money every week is getting real old now.
