The 411 Wrestling Top 5 9.08.10: Week 91 – Our Favorite Tag Teams
Posted by Larry Csonka on 09.08.2010
From the Outsiders and the Road Warriors to Beer Money and the Hollywood Blondes, the 411 Wrestling Staff looks at their favorite tag teams in the latest edition of the 411 Wrestling Top 5! Check out the full article to see which teams made the list and why!
Hello everyone and welcome to 411 Wrestling's Top 5 List. What we are going to is take a topic each week and all the writers here on 411 wrestling will have the ability to give us their Top 5 on said topic, plus up to three honorable mentions. Most of our topics will be based on recent events in the Wrestling World, looking at those events that make us think of times past.
So, on to this week's topic…
OUR FAVORITE TAG TEAMS
They're All-American Boys...
So what did our group of writers select? Let's find out…
Larry Csonka
HM: The Heavenly Bodies - Some call them a second rate Midnight Express, but Lane, Prichard and Del Ray constantly entertained me.
HM: The Fabulous Freebirds - Hayes, Gordy and Roberts in World Class, enough said.
HM: Beer Money - I liked America's Most Wanted and Team Canada, but they took the best parts of those and awesome was born.
5. The Rock and Roll Express - While most fans these days either don't know have forgotten about or simply do not appreciate the Rock and Roll Express, they still remain one of my favorite tag teams today. I can still toss in my best of set, and whether it is a squash match, battle with the Midnights, Russians or Horsemen, the yare all enjoyable. Plus they are still relevant today as numerous times we use the phrase "Playing Ricky Morton" while discussing the breakdown of a tag team match.
4. Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton - Arn Anderson is one of my favorite tag team guys of all times, his teams with Ole Anderson, Tully Blanchard and Larry Zbyszko were all fun. And then there is Bobby Eaton, another one of my favorite tag team guys. Teams with Condrey, Lane, and Regal were all teams I enjoyed. And when you put these guys together it clicked because they were so good and it worked. As mentioned, these guys are both personal favorites of mine, and a team just delivered for me.
3. The Steiner Brothers - The Steiner Brothers combined great matches and a bad ass attitude that made me an instant fan. Watching the team form, evolve, kick ass and then take names in the US and Japan was a true pleasure, and whenever they were on the TV, they had my attention.
2. The Midnight Express - When I think back on wrestling history, I always look to the Midnight Express as my favorite heel tag team. Whether it was Eaton and Condrey or Eaton and Lane, combining them with Jim Cornette equaled gold. They were also involved with one of my favorite angles ever in WCW, when Paul Heyman and the "Original" Midnight Express showed up and attacked.
1. The Road Warriors - While it goes against the usual IWC mantra of OMG WORKRATEZ, as a child I LOVED the Road Warriors. Two bigger than life guys that would rush the ring to the sounds of IRON MAN, and simply destroy and lay waste to anything and everything in their path. They were bad ass, they were fun, and I still mark out to the old footage to this day.
Robert S. Leighty Jr
HM: Rated RKO - I am a fan of heel wrestlers and Edge/Orton were two of my favorites so when they joined together was a big deal to me.
HM: LAX My favorite team in TNA history that sadly didn't get a chance at a reunion.
HM: The Rockers - I give them an honorable mention just for the way the team ended. Greatest break-up of a tag team ever.
5. The Mega-Powers - Sure this was just a case of the top two faces in the WWF thrown together, but who cares. Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage were a team, and while exciting, the best part was knowing it was going to end in spectacular fashion. Savage's paranoia over Liz and being a champion on par with Hogan coupled with Hogan's ego made for a spectacular story. When everything exploded it was glorious to watch.
4. The Hollywood Blondes - Seriously, how could you not love this team? They were just tossed together as an after thought and immediately became the most over team in WCW. Sadly they were split just as they got rolling because they go over so well and that wasn't what WCW had in mind.
3. Demolition - I grew up a WWF guy and while I enjoy The Road Warriors, my bad ass team of choice will always be Demolition. Go back and watch them win the titles from the pretty boy team of Strike Force and listen to the pop the heels get.
2. Edge and Christian - While some teams were cocky or portrayed as monsters, Edge and Christian got over due to off beat shenanigans. They were part of the last Golden Era of Tag Wrestling in the WWF (with the Hardys and Dudleys). I always found myself rooting for E&C because they were so hilarious with their 5 second poses and their interactions with Kurt Angle.
1. The Outsiders - Hall and Nash get my nod as favorite tag team because they were part of my favorite angle of all time: The nWo. Hall and Nash were the cool heels and some of my favorite memories feature them causing havoc on Nitro. Nash lawn darting Rey into a trailer immediately comes to mind.
Ryan Byers
Note: I know half of you won't read this, but I'm just going to say it now. The topic that I have been given is FAVORITE tag teams, which is distinctly different from BEST tag teams. Please keep this in mind before posting some inane comment about how I could have possibly omitted a team that was insanely popular with other people . . . these are my personal favorites, as per the topic.
HM: Daisuke Harada & Atsushi Kotoge - These two are more of a "current favorite" than an "all-time favorite," as they have been tearing it up in Japan's Osaka Pro Wrestling lately. They absolutely deserve to be brought in to EVOLVE, ROH, or PWG sometime soon.
HM: The Heavenly Bodies - The Rock n' Roll Express/Midnight Express feud gets a lot of love, but there were some matches almost as good in the feud between the RnR's and the Heavenly Bodies in Smokey Mountain Wrestling, whether it was the original duo of Stan Lane & Tom Prichard or the later pairing of Prichard & Jimmy DelRay.
HM: High Energy - In 1993, I was eleven years old and had no fashion sense, because I saw the neon parachute pants being worn by Owen Hart and Koko B. Ware and concluded that they were the coolest tag team of all time.
5. The Steiner Brothers - I feel bad for the Steiner Brothers these days. They really do deserve to have a great legacy in tag team wrestling, but the fact that Scotty pissed so many powerful people off latter in his career (especially Triple H and Ric Flair) has lead to them getting virtually no coverage from WWE . . . and even TNA won't employ Scott anymore now that Flair is there. However, during their heyday, the Steiners were absolutely revolutionary tag team wrestlers. They had all of the intimidation factor associated with the Roadwarriors, the Legion of Doom, or the Samoan Swat Team, but they also had twenty times the athletic ability and in-ring prowess of those three teams combined. Whether it was in the United States for the NWA/WCW or overseas for New Japan Pro Wrestling, the brothers from Michigan were light years ahead of their time in the early 1990's.
4. Edge & Christian - Of the three teams that were the focus of the WWF tag team division during the height of the Attitude Era, every fan seemed to pick one as their favorite. My personal choice was Edge & Christian. I'd always been a bit more of a "heel fan," so they didn't really do much for me at first . . . until they turned dirty and became one of the most entertaining heel acts in several years. Normally comedy and main event or semi-main event level wrestlers don't mix that well, but E&C managed to pull it off because, not only were they fine comedians (per wrestling standards) but also because the people putting the show together at the time were smart enough to realize that, if they were going to stay over while doing the sort of comedy they were, they needed to win and win convincingly, highlighting all of their athleticism in the process. More than any other team on this list (with the possible exception of my number one), I don't know if there's been another team that had a better balance of in-ring and out-of-ring moments.
3. Jumping Bomb Angels - Great team. Plus selecting them has the added benefit of pissing off several people who I know will be commenting on this column.
2. The Hart Foundation - Bret Hart. Jim Neidhart. Jimmy Hart on the outside. In these three men, you truly had a unit where the sum was greater than any of its parts. Neidhart was a great power wrestler but wasn't as mobile as others in the ring. Bret was a great technical wrestler and had some speed to him but probably wasn't big enough to be taken seriously as a single in that era's WWF. Jimmy, obviously, wasn't going to be wrestling at all but had tons of obnoxious charisma. Take the three of them, put them together, and you had one hell of a unit. Not only did they have classics against the British Bulldogs, but they also had some slick underrated matches against the Rockers and probably carried the Nasty Boys to the best match that Knobs or Sags has ever had. Plus the legacy of the Hart Foundation isn't hurt at all by the fact that, ten years after their initial run, the name was dragged up again and given to one of my favorite stables in wrestling history.
1. The Midnight Express - How could you not love the Midnights? There were several versions of the team over the years, though the three names most commonly associated with the ME name are Dennis Condrey, Stan Lane, and Bobby Eaton. The three men in their various combinations traveled across numerous territories and had top notch matches in all of them, whether it was Memphis, Mid-South, WCCW, or, perhaps most notably, Jim Crocket Promotions/World Championship Wrestling. Whether it was the feud that everybody talks about with Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson, the matches that turned them into de facto babyfaces against the Dynamic Dudes, or anything in between, the Midnights were as close to a perfect tag team as professional wrestling has ever seen. Toss in all of the verbal magic and outside of the ring shenanigans facilitated by manager James E. Cornette, and you've got a unit so great that not even the atrocious late 1990's version involving "Bombastic Bob" and "Bodacious Bart" can't tarnish their legacy.
Aaron Hubbard
5. The Motor City Machine Guns - My favorite tag team going today, made of two of my favorite wrestlers going today. When I started following TNA in late 2005, Alex Shelly and Chris Sabin were two stars who really impressed me, and I was happy for any success they had. When they formed a tag team in 2007, I was overjoyed. One of the best tag teams in the world, and they've proven it time and time again in TNA, ROH and Japan.
4. The Brain Busters - Arn Anderson + ANYONE = Tag Team Greatness. But Tully Blanchard was also a great wrestler. Together, you have perhaps the best heel team in wrestling history. If the Rock 'n' Roll Express is the perfect babyface team, these guys are the perfect heel team. Great wrestlers who beat the crap out of the faces and bumped like crazy during the inevitable comeback.
3. The Holy Demon Army - My favorite tag match ever is these guys vs. Misawa and Kobashi from June 1995. Toshiaki Kawada and Akira Taue have always played second fiddle to those two, but in my opinion they were the more interested wrestlers. I don't think any team has so effectively gone from deplorable to admirable in the same match as these two. Great, GREAT tag team.
2. The Hart Foundation - Besides giving us one fantastic worker in Bret Hart, the Hart Foundation was perhaps the best showcase of big man-small man teams. Bret was the science and Neidhart was the muscle. They were able to use their size difference to use innovative tag team moves. I've probably studied these guys more than any other team.
1. The Rockers - The Midnight Express may have written the book on tandem offense, but the Rockers wrote the second edition. Shawn Michaels and Marty Janetty perfected tag team offense and it was mind-blowing to watch them work; most of their stuff still holds up well today. They've also served as the inspiration for other great tag teams like The Hardyz, London and Kendrick, The Motor City Machine Guns and The Young Bucks, so I'm very thankful that these guys teamed. Oh, and they introduced us to Shawn Michaels. Can't forget that.
Nick Bazar
5. Arn Anderson/Tully Blanchard - The Brain Busters. Sure, Arn and Tully looked like two guys that your dad might go golfing with, but they were true bad-asses. And that is what set them apart from the other muscular, beefed up tag teams of their time. They would isolate and dissect their opponents unlike anyone else. Not to mention, there is a reason why a spinebuster is still referred to as a Double A spinebuster. Oh, and that little spike piledriver of theirs wasn't bad either.
4. The Rock ‘n' Roll Express - These guys were the perfect 80s tag team. They embodied the big hair rock era with their own big hair and colorful outfits. Morton and Gibson always managed to pull off exciting matches riddled with innovative double-team moves. Who could forget their legendary feud with Jim Cornette's Midnight Express? As great as Eaton and Condrey were, I always preferred The Rock ‘n' Roll Express.
3. America's Most Wanted - A team that very unfortunately does not get the recognition they deserve, AMW was the first team to put TNA on the tag team wrestling map. Many people say that in the early days, the X Division is what stood TNA apart from WWE, but their tag team wrestling also deserves some of the credit. AMW was an integral part in that, perfecting and modernizing the southern style of tag team wrestling. They got over as faces in the beginning, but did just as great a job as heels aligned with Jeff Jarrett. Remember, before Braden Walker, there was Chris Harris, and he was pretty damn good.
2. The Rockers - Shawn Michaels is my favorite wrestler of all time and part of the reason for The Rockers getting my number two spot on this list. In his shoot interview from 1999, Michaels explains that unlike many other teams, he and Marty Jannetty lived, traveled and partied together for the seven years that they were a team. To say that they knew each other like the back of their hand would be an understatement. They took the stuff the Midnight and Rock ‘n' Roll Expresses were doing to a whole other level; double-this, double-that, their offense was a sight to behold. They pulled a decent match out of Akeem "The African Dream" for crying out loud!
1. The Hardy Boys - You have to respect a team like the Hardy Boys. Their story should serve as a great inspiration for young, up-and-coming wrestlers with a dream. From wrestling with cardboard championship belts and makeshift rings to starting their own company with OMEGA and finally making it to the WWE, the Hardy Boys are a true "dreams do come true" story. Much like The Rockers before them, they upped the ante on tag team wrestling at a time when wrestling was at the height of its popularity. The Hardys never failed to deliver on the grand stage when the next great performance was expected, putting their bodies on the line each and every time. Then, with their reunion in 2007, they were able to show off their ability to wrestle a more straight-up wrestling match with great talent. In other words, they proved that they didn't need tables, ladders and chairs to put on entertaining matches.
Ronnie LaFianza
These teams I selected are my favorites, so I expect to see at least 4 comments telling me that my picks are stupid. Also, I wasn't watching wrestling in the 90's or any time before that, so most of these teams are pretty recent.
HM:Styles and Tomko - Ok, a controversial pick, but for some weird reason I loved this team. Styles was the high flyer and an idiot while Tomko was the powerhouse and the more serious of the two. They had some really fun matches and I hated how his team didn't last longer. Plus, using the Magic Killer as their finisher was pure win.
HM:Styles and Daniels - An exciting tag team composed of two real life friends who had some fantastic chemistry in the ring and put on some of the most exciting matches for the few months that they teamed together. It's a shame we couldn't have seen more of them teaming in the ring.
HM:The Steiner Brothers - Two brothers who had two similar styles, yet two completely different personalities. Rick was the crazy animal who would intimidate the opponents while using his technical prowess to wrestle them while Scott went in there and fucked shit up. A great dynamic that created for some very fun matches.
5) The Hardyz - One of the most legendary tag teams in all of professional wrestling history, the Hardy's are really looked at as two people you'd never thought would make it as far as they did. Bonafide jobbers at first, and a decade later they have both been considered as main eventers at some point in their careers. The Hardy's are considered by some as the innovators of tag team excitement, and have put on some of the craziest and most awesome tag team matches in WWE history.
4) Beer Money, Inc. - When AMW split up and Roode and Storm were both out on their own, it was only a matter of time before these two teamed up. Hell, I called out these two becoming a team, and that was before I was a smark. They started out as just two wrestlers thrown together immediately in the tag title scene, and they weren't given much to work with (lumberjack matches where the fans are the lumberjacks usually tend to suck). They were given a good team to work with though in LAX, and they steadily improved over time. Their matches against LAX slowly improved, and they began to hold their own in matches against teams of different styles, like Team 3D, the Motor City Machine Guns, Lethal Consequences and Matt Morgan and Abyss. They've really come into their own since the beginning, and everyone loves to shout out "BEER! MOHNAY!" (Don't lie. You know you do).
3) Los Guerrero's - What kind of list would this be without a mention of Los Guerrero's? Seriously, these guys were just the epitome of awesome (sorry Edge and Christian). They would do whatever it took to win, and the fans just fell in love with them, no matter if they were faces or heels. They had that chemistry that only brothers (I know they were cousins, but you get the point) have and it was like they always knew what the other one was thinking at the same time. Their matches against the likes of Edge and Mysterio, Angle and Benoit, the World's Greatest Tag Team and the Basham's remain as some of the most fun and exciting tag matches in WWE history.
2) Edge and Christian - What was there not to love about these two? They were two super cool dudes out to make a name for themselves. Whether that was accomplished by beating their opponents, telling a few jokes, or parodying other wrestlers and celebrities with their infamous "5 Second Pose", these two just reeked of awesomeness. They had some great chemistry as a team, and made sure to make every match fun and enjoyable.
1) Motor City Machine Guns - Let the hate roll in, I don't care. The Guns fucking rule, and there's no denying it. Maybe it's because I haven't been watching wrestling forever, but when I first started watching, tag team wrestling was pretty much dead. The Guns soon came in though and started to tear shit up. They tear down the house night in and night out, and put on some of the most entertaining matches on the card every time they step into the ring. They have some of the most unique tag team maneuvers that really make you just say "Holy shit, how did they do that or think of that?". These guys make tag team wrestling fun and are quite possibly the greatest team going today. No matter who they're scheduled to face, I look forward to the Guns wrestling every night and there's no two opponents out there who can drag a match against them down.
Chad Nevett
5. Beer Money - While the Guns have been impressing people (including myself), I've got a soft spot for Beer Money. Robert Roode and James Storm doesn't look like a natural pairing, especially from their individual gimmicks prior to teaming up, but it's worked wonderfully. They're so over that people still cheer them despite being heels.
4. Miz & Morrison - Probably my favorite tag team of the last few years. A perfect example of taking two guys who just needed that something extra to get them over with the crowd before sending them off as singles competitors. They had attitude and worked well as a team. Two tag title runs and two semi-successful singles careers. No Jannettys on this team.
3. Harlem Heat - My main memories of WCW's tag team division as a kid revolve around Harlem Heat. They always seemed to be on top or challenging for the belts, and did so by putting on exciting matches. Ten time WCW Tag Team Champions... that's impressive.
2. Edge & Christian - They may not have as many championships as Harlem Heat, but out of the three teams that helped define tag team wrestling in the WWF a decade or so ago, these guys were my favorite. They had more skills than the Dudleys and more personality than the Hardyz. They were jerks, but the sort of jerks you couldn't help but like a little. They were entertaining in and out of the ring, always worth watching.
1. Hart Foundation - Okay, so maybe I'm biased when it comes to the Canadian teams, but I've got to give the top spot to the Hart Foundation. Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart had such a great working relationship in the ring, each man bringing a different skillset to the matches that they looked impossible to beat. If it wasn't Jim's strength that laid out the other team, it was Bret's technical ability. They worked well as heels and faces, got a great start with Jimmy Hart as their manager and mouthpiece -- and, then, as their main antagonist fighting through tag teams he managed. So much of their work led to future feuds for Bret from the British Bulldog to Shawn Michaels to Jim and Bret being on opposite sides when Owen arrived on the scene. Without question, my favorite tag team of all time.
Jeremy Thomas
HM: Los Guerreros - During the time of the SmackDown Six, this was the best of the tag teams running. They felt more like a tag team than two singles guys thrown together, just because of the family connection. Great stuff from them during this era.
HM: Strike Force - Call me crazy, but I loved Martel and Santana as a kid and when they broke up I was completely heartbroken. I don't know what it is about them I liked so much, but there you have it.
HM: The Dudley Boyz - On "Best Tag Teams" this one would be higher, but I just never got into the Dudleyz like I did some other teams. They were great and amazingly influential though, and part of some of my favorite tag matches.
5. Edge & Christian - I'm actually kinda surprised that these guys ended up so low on my list. I thought they made one of the best heel tag teams of all-time and while they were sort of a goofy comedy, they pulled it off without losing any credibility. They were just so committed to making it work that it did, against any expectations. It also helps that they were always able to get it done in the ring and had some great timing, and they made their mark in the ring by winning consistently and getting the crowd to hate them for being able to pack up what they said.
4. British Bulldogs - It's unfortunate that Davey Boy and Dynamite's careers and lives would come to such bad ends, because when they were in the WWF as the Bulldogs I loved them. They were a team tailor-made for kids to like in the Rock n' Wrestling era; they were colorful, dynamic, had a cute pet and thrilled in the ring. Dynamite's aerial moves mixed with Davey's power offense clicked well and made a lasting impression on me. Along with the next two picks, these guys helped cement my love of tag team wrestling
3. The Rockers - I've gone on record as being a huge Shawn Michaels mark, and it started all the way back at the era of the Rockers. We could talk about how influential they were, but I'd just rather talk about how much I loved them during the WWF's heyday. They were insanely over and always kept the crowd happy; they never got the company fully behind them unfortunately but they always made an impact where they were at and became a fixture of the WWE. And of course, that one guy from the team would do pretty well after the Rockers split up.
2. Demolition - I know Demolition were cheap knock-offs of the Road Warriors, but I always loved these guys more. The outfits were crazy, the face paint was colorful, and I think they never got their due as a competent team. Ax and Smash (and later Crush) were remarkable as a team and they went a hell of a lot farther than most cheap knock-off tag teams would ever have the chance to get.
1. The Hardy Boyz - As Ryan said, everyone has their favorite from the WWF tag team division at the height of the Attitude Era and while I enjoyed the Dudleys and loved E&C, the Hardyz were who I marked for. They had such an unbelievable timing as a team that they could do things that just blew me away. Matt and Jeff have moved on in their careers and done just fine for themselves, and that's great to see because they looked like the kind of team that would do a Rockers-like split and only one would go anywhere. But as far as they separate, you know that they could always reunite and still set the tag team division back on fire. That's just the way it is.
Nice mix of teams. Good to see I'm not the only one who still has some love for Matt and Jeff. Surprised not to see the Dudley's on here though. Do they lose points for still being active? Seems most of these are being viewed through the nostalgia filter.

Always liked The Outsiders and heel Edge and Christian cause they were just so fuckin' cool then. I'm pretty surprised no one said the New Age Outlaws. One of my person faves was the Jersey Triad and Triple X, mostly cause DDP, Kanyon and Bam Bam were always innovative...hell, I could say the same thing for Triple X, and that Freebird rule was just something extra. Damn, can't forget about Owen and Davey either...

The Dudleys getting no respect is a travesty. They had it all and then some. Big Dick, Little Spike, Sign Guy and Joel Gertner all got over because of them. They had a phenomenal run in WWF and proved they are the best tag team of the last 2 decades of wrestling. Dudleys are #1 by a wide wide margin.

The writers for the wrestling section are some of the biggest wrestling nerds, 2 people picked the Hardy Boys, 1 for the Rockers, and 1 for the Motor City Machine Guns. Those are some homoerotic pics, seriously that is like saying your favorite band is the backstreet boys or My Chemical Romance (which is ok if you are a 12 year old girl).
Also, anyone that chooses the Midnight Express only picks them for their moves and matches (that they probably saw on youtube), they were not a very cool team (in any way). I love the Midnight Express, but they wouldn't be in my top 5 and I actually watched them when they were champions as it was happening.
I don't even have the outsiders in my top 10, but I could see why someone would actually choose them as their favorite.

So, if a team uses cool moves and has good matches, what else do you need to like about them???
Posted By: SS87 (Guest) on September 07, 2010 at 11:58 PM
Honorable mentions- Los Guerreros, Demolition, Road Warriors, Steiner Brothers, Hollywood Blonds
5) The Rockers- so much fun to watch and really brought the tandem offense to a new level.
4) The Dudleys- back in ECW, these two were heat machines, and who doesn't love 3-Ds through a table?
3) Money Inc.- I'll probably catch some heat for this one, but Ted Dibiase was one of my favorite heels growing up, and his promos could always get fans to hate him. Stick him with IRS, another silly gimmick but also a heat-seeker as well as a good technician in the ring, and you have a classic great heel team.
2) Edge and Christian- Do I need to say anything more than TLC and 5 second poses?
1) The Hart Foundation- I'll admit, I'm a Bret Hart mark, so naturally him and Anvil take the cake.

If I'm picking MY favorite top five they would be:
5. The Bushwackers
4. Road Warriors/Legion of Doom
3. Miz/Morrison
2. The Outsiders
1. The Rockers
I was surprised to see so much love for The Rockers on this list. Honestly I always thought I was just really high on them and they maybe weren't as great as I remembered, but this list shows at the very least I'm not crazy for thinking they were awesome.

Legion of Doom/Road Warriors were in fact copying their gimmick from Mad Max.
Demolition was copying their gimmick from KISS.
Get it right, these are two separate entities!

I'm so glad douchey indy teams that 50 people have seen weren't included.
Anyways. My top 5.
1. The Acolytes. I liked them so much better than their APA incarnation. When they came out to their music you knew they ment business.
2. The Eliminators: Their tag moves were awesome, and Kronus was such an agile big man.
3. Midnight Express(Eaton and Lane) Cornette made this awesome team even better. Their matches with RR were fantastic.
4. Demolition: Yeah they were Road Warrior knockoffs but they were awesome.
5. Cade and Murdoch. I friggen loved this team. They were so under-rated and their matches with the Hardyz were great. They just came along too late.

I loves me some tag team wrestling, I leave you with my 2 cents.
HM: Demolition
HM: Miracle Violence Connection
HM: Steenerico
HM: Sky Team (Sombra and Volador Jr.)
HM: La Hermandad Extrema
HM: Tomko and Giant Bernard
5. Guerreros De La Atlantida/Infierno
Rey Bucanero and Ultimo Guerrero, CMLL's team of the decade.
4. Los Guerreros
Eddie and Chavo Jr give chocolate and peanut butter a run for its money.
3. The Eliminators
Vastly underrated, and seemingly forgotten, but one hell of a tag team when the original ECW had a streak of great tag teams.
2. Owen Hart and The British Bulldog
Shocking not to see even an honorable mention for these two, one half Hart Foundation and another half British Bulldogs and you have one hell of a team.
1. Los Gringos Locos
Eddie Guerrero and Art Barr revolutionized tag teams in Mexico. Not only that but they knew how to make people hate them with a passion, they were ahead of their time and were set to make a huge mark on the U.S. Art Barrs death unfortunately put a stop to that team. Leaving us only a glimpse of the potential these two had.

The Road Warriors captured the imagination like no other team. Someone was getting wrecked when they entered and that was the the bottom line. You know how the Undertaker is reacted to now by the crowd? Animal and Hawk got that every entrance. A mixture of excitement and awe. You coulda milked those guys the way they do Taker now for years.
And how can you leave the Dudley's off? They were the perfect example of a tag team. A well oiled unit that seemed so much more dangerous than any of their peers. Oh and they made the ECW fans into complete marks with their heel schtick. The Hardyz never did anything near to that level.

Lets see no mention of the Funks,Briscoes or Original Blackjacks, Von Erichs, SST, Minnesota Wrecking Crew or My personal favorite The Texas Outlaws. Yet AMW,Heavenly Bodies, Beer Money, Miz/Morrison make top 5's. Wow maybe some folks need to view some of the archives and see that there was very good tag teams before the Hogan era. Hell most of the teams mentioned in the top 5's were using moves and gimmicks that were put in place prior to 1985! History my want to view it sometime!

You're a moron. One of the greatest tag teams EVER was in Ring of Honor. That tag team is the American Wolves. Seriously, you cannot beat a pairing like Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards, two of the best talents to be in the ring in the last 20 years.

Favorite tag teams, you can pick anybody you like.
I actually like The Briscoes(current) a lot. I've not seen a bad match from them, and they just want to kick faces in. Them vs Dudleys in their prime would have been some hardcore fun.
Posted By: Guest#1435 (Guest) on September 08, 2010 at 07:18 AM
if these are ur favarite teams then i am sorry but you dont apprecite or havent viewed greatness.
no body mentioned the fn quebeckers ,real heels are never cheered, now thats a real heel team.
bret hart and owen hart , short but awesome , watch them against the steiners from wwe , that match is beyond words.
the bulldogs need more love as dynamite kid has become one of the most underappreciated performers of all time.
shawn micheals and diesal , they were the hart foundation formula of the nineties.
hollywood fn blondes , were cooler and funnier then edge and christian cud ever dream of being. austin and brian pillman the talent and a gimmick that has never been topped.
have to give the outsiders there due for pure coolness but there matches werent the greatest.
eddie gerraro and the love juice , cant remember name of team , but again before there time.
gordy and dr death , how can u not mention them.
dean mallenko with eddie , beniot or saturn when any of these tagged it was a clinic.
benoit , angle / edge , mysterio , how you forget so soon.
rock and sock , when it comes to entertainment they were hard to beat.
for sheer fun nasties , bushwackers , money inc and as a one of pairing macho and warrior , madness presonified.
i enjoy these columns but the writers need to go watch the teams mentioned above , these are just of the top of my head , and u will soon change ur mind on ur favarites. some of the teams mentioned are great but vastly overrated , im sorry to say but u peeps dont know shit , i makes me angry. i appreciate the luv given to steiners , the midnights , hart foundation , mcmg , lax , hardys eac but the lists wud be fine if u were given 60 seconds yo peeps actually wrote a column wtf , just go and watch wat awesome is.

as an old fart, i appreciate 2 nods to the midnight express. but how could you guys forget the fabulous ones?
steve keirn & stan lane were the hardy boys of the 80s. they came out to billy squier's "everybody wants you." they were high flying and fast paced and completely original for their day.
the fabulous ones were pioneers who set the stage for everybody from the rockers to the hardys to mcmg.

Ronnie LaFianza's list is the only decent one. Tag Team wrestling has only been credible in the last decade. Anything before then was just boring tbh.

Speaking of homoerotic picks: demolition - they looked like two chubby, painted up leather boys from a pride parade. I'm guessing Patterson chose their outfits. I'm not hating; just an observation.

I must be the only one who loved the APA. They were pretty much the Stone Cold team. They drank beer and kicked ass, and got paid to do it sometimes thanks to their Protection Agengy gig. They didn't need ladders or tables to get the job done.
Posted By: BR (Guest) on September 08, 2010 at 09:42 AM
The Rockers were knock-offs of the Rock 'n" Roll Express. That's not
very innovative.
Posted By: Guest#2428 (Guest) on September 08, 2010 at 09:43 AM
Briscoes have been having the best tag matches in the world for the past 5 years. They've had the Motor City's best tag match at Good Times, Great Memories, they've gone against the best of Dragon Gate, and the best of NOAH. Its sickening people mentioned someone like LAX and Beer Money over them.
Posted By: Mouse (Guest) on September 08, 2010 at 10:06 AM
Well, since it's favorite I have no issue with any of these lists, I'd have to say my favorites would be:
HM - Harlem Heat - Great team, a heel team most of the time but two very talented performers
HM - Bushwhackers - Those guys were hilarious
HM - Steiner Brothers - Great team
HM - The American Males - Buff Bagwell & Scotty Riggs - I loved them when I was a kind in WCW, also liked the Zman and Johnny Gunn, haha.
5. Road Warriors - Hawk and Animal were awesome.
4. The Dudley Boyz - An epitomy of a tag team, worthless by themselves, great as a team.
3. The Hardy Boyz - I'm not a huge fan of Matt or Jeff as singles wrestlers, but as a tag team, this team is money.
2. The Hart Foundation - Both the old and new versions are great.
1. Edge & Christian - Not only were these guys hilarious with their 5 second poses, they were a great team too. Christian remains the most underrated superstar in the WWE.
Actually, I think Christian might be the most underrated WWE superstar ever, I mean, he's great in the ring and he is GOLDEN on the microphone, yet never gets a push. I could easily argue he is better than Rey Misterio Jr. both in the ring and way better on the mic, and a similar size, yet has not gotten the same credit.
Perhaps 411 could make their next list, Most UNDERRATED WWE Superstars ever, meaning guys who were good and had potential that the WWE never gave the right push too....I would think many people would have Christian on that list.

What a joke. Jeremy picks the Rockers & Demolition and NOT the teams they copied? And worse, no mention at ALL of Ivan & Nikita Koloff, any combo of the Von Erichs, Chris Adams & Gino Hernandez and all the hell they wreaked in World Class? Let me know when you get some REAL commentary up here and not just some marks for funny outfits.

the fact that Scotty pissed so many powerful people off latter in his career
---------------------------
Umm well that and the fact he went from one of the best wrestlers in the US who didn't talk to one of the worst who rambled on incoherently. (Yes, for the younger readers Scott Steiner at one point was consider one of the best wrestlers in the US. Also he popularized the hurricarana in the US. He's so bad now I've seen dirt sheet writers who didn't know he was once good.)
Posted By: NotSoHeavyD2 (Guest) on September 08, 2010 at 10:43 AM
Very broad topic. You could even break it down to favorite tag teams from 80's 90's and current, and make it 3 topics, but still lots of tag greatness out there..
5. MCMG - I've followed these two for awhile now, and they do make you reminisce of when tag teams were more stressed.
4. E&C - For many reasons already stated. They had chemistry, but also had lots of fun in the ring and it showed.
3. Steiner Brothers - Growing up I loved these two. Fueds with the Freebirds, Doom, and Road Warriors always stand out. Good memories.
2. Hollywood Blondes - These two were the original E & C in my book. They just clicked from the outset, produced terrific matches, and were the epitome of tag team heelness
1. ARn Anderson & Tully Blanchard - IMO, these two were the definition of heel tag teams. They set the bar for being asshole heels. Added that they were backed up with the Horsemen made them all the more better. I even liked them as the Brainbusters too.

Surprised no one's mentioned the Gangsta's, by far one of the most entertaining tag teams of the last 20 years.
Posted By: The Godfather (Guest) on September 08, 2010 at 12:27 PM
My favs:
5: Brainbusters: You always got a good to great match out of these two. Plus, it was impressive that this no-nonsense team managed to thrive in the WWF sports entertainment environment.
4: Demolition: Initially viewed as an LOD rip-off, they managed to become quite distinct, with a fun finisher. Plus, their promos were awesome.
3: Eliminators: Only together for a short while, they were an amazing team.
2: Hart Foundation: A perfect example of opposites connecting. Bret was the technician, while Jim was the muscle, and yet they worked very well together.
1: Midnight Express (Eaton/Lane): The epitome the sum exceeding the parts. Eaton and Lane were solid wrestlers, but their teamwork was unparalleled.

HM:Jerishow, Brothers of Destruction, Los Guerreros, Edge and Jericho, and The L.O.D.
5)The Hart Foundation - Yeah that's just a given.
4)New Age Outlaws - The heart and soul of DX. What X-Pac? Triple and Chyna? Are you kidding me? No you have the tag team who fueded the most, and gave the most. Big ups to the Road Dogg Jessie James, the Bad Ass Bill Gunn, THE...NEW...AGE......OUTLAWS!
3)The Dudleyz - "D-VON--GET THE TABLE!"
2)Edge and Christian - Just c'mon. Best friends, great wrestlers. Oh yeah.
1)Jericho/Benoit - Winners of the Tag Team Turmoil, the single most innovative submission combo I have ever saw(Walls of Jericho/Crossface) Plus you have the great Great talker/decent talker.

1. "The Outsiders - Hall and Nash get my nod as favorite tag team because they were part of my favorite angle of all time: The nWo. Hall and Nash were the cool heels and some of my favorite memories feature them causing havoc on Nitro. Nash lawn darting Rey into a trailer immediately comes to mind."
This doesn't make them a good team. None of what you mention happened when they were in a tag match. They didn't have stellar matches. They never had match of the year. Hall and Nash made a tag-team because they didn't want to take a lot of bumps or wrestle for a long time in a match. When they lost the belts to the Steiner Brothers who pinned them fair and square, the next night on Nitro, Bischoff stripped the Steiners of the belts on some made up b.s. claim and gave the belts back to the Outsiders. That doesn't equate to being a good team when the coach makes the winners give the trophy back.

As a kid, I went crazy for Laserton and Jimmy Valiant. But the most excited I have ever been for wrestling is when Hogan teamed with the Junkyard Dog. In my little 11 year old mind, the world stopped and the two greatest forces of the universe were coming together for one night, it was awesome. Only to be closely followed by when Hogan actually teamed with Roddy Piper. Talk about something this kid thought he'd never see.

"Jumping Bomb Angels - Great team. Plus selecting them has the added benefit of pissing off several people who I know will be commenting on this column."
Win. You should've given them a long write up and a picture, lol. Here's my
list I guess:
HM: Kotaro Suzuki & Ricky Marvin - These guys made the GCH Jr. Heavyweight tag team championship actually mean something. They put on excellent matches left and right. They're not a team anymore though. If they were they'd probably be in my top 5.
HM: The Briscoe Brothers - The 6 time ROH World Tag Team Champions. These guys are probably going to be remembered as the best tag team in ROH history.
5. Edge & Christian - Do I really need to say anything about this team?
4. Paul London & Brian Kendrik - These guys held the WWE Tag Team Championship for over a year in a day and age when most WWE tag teams get split up after a few months. Thats saying a lot about how much WWE had faith in them. On top of that they actually defended the belts very often and put on great matches. WWE had something special with these two, but of course they just HAD to split them up. WWE doesn't believe in tag team wrestling anymore. *sigh*
3. Kevin Steen & El Generico - Two of the best workers in the indies. These guys could hang with anyone.
2. MCMG - If you want to see tag team offense at its finest just watch a MCMG match. Of course people do rag on them sometimes for their selling, which I fully understand, but I still enjoy watching these two work. I saw them against The Kings Of Wrestling live. One of the best matches I've ever seen in my life. Speaking of the kings...
1. Kings Of Wrestling - Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli. Two of the absolute best wrestlers in the world today. Their technical wrestling is on par with guys like Nigel McGuiness and Bryan Danielson. Their team work is comparable to MCMG. Their striking is some of the best. On top of that they both have plenty of character and charisma and both can cut good promos. These guys are just two perfect wrestlers. You can call me and indy mark all you want, but until you've seen these two work, you haven't seen shit. This team is the Ric Flair (or Kenta Kobashi for you puro fans) of tag team wrestling.

How GOD DAMN DARE all of you disrespecting the Dudleys! Not one fucking mention??? HM: The Eliminators
HM: Steve Williams & Terry Gordy
HM: The Rock & Roll Express ("Playing Ricky Morton," anyone?)
HM: The Iron Violence Connection
5: The Rockers. Modern high-speed teams wouldn't be what they are without them.
4: Harlem Heat. Overlooked power/agility duo with an impressive amount of time at the top.
3: Edge & Christian. Skill and charisma out the yin-yang. They ruled when tag team wrestling still mattered.
2: Dudley Boyz/Team 3-D. There's no denying them, these guys were meant to team together, and it shows.
1: The Steiner Brothers. All over the world, innovators, entertainers, and just overall versatile and excellent.

Calm down Hoss. Remember, FAVORITE tag teams, nothing about who is the best. Besides, title count does not a great wrestler make.
Posted By: Comment Board Poster (Registered) on September 08, 2010 at 07:07 PM
Wow. A lot of great teams are listed here. I am going to go with a different variety of teams myself.
5) The Miracle of Violence: Terry Bam Bam Gordy and Dr Death Steve Williams. These two destroyed the Steiners when they were considered untouchable.
4) Doom: Butch Reed and Ron Simmons. These two destroyed everyone until the Steiners got a hold of them.
3) The Machines: This was a great team because it consisted of Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant ad Axe and Smash of Demolition under masks.
2) The Dream Team: This team was Greg The Hammer Valentine and Brutus Beefcake with Jimmy Hart in their corner. Part of the awesomeness of this team was that Valentine was the IC Champion during their run.
1) The Steiners: These guys were just awesome. Sure I should have included some of the all-time greats like the Road Warrios, the Midnight Express, the Midnite Rockers, US Express, The Rock N Roll Express, The Andersons, Harlem Heat, The Hart Foundation, The British Bulldogs and so many others. But this is my list.

Granted this isn't a "best tag teams" or "most decorated tag teams" list, but the Dudley Boyz were every bit entertaining in and outside of the ring as anyone on that list especially during their run in ECW. They had charisma, they had the fans in the palm of their hands. They had white heat in just about any building they stepped into. And add Joel Gertner to the package (who did a helluva lot more to piss off fans than Jimmy Hart), and you're talkin about one of the most entertaining acts of all time. Its a shame they only got one mention at all here...
Is it just me or do ECW teams never get any mention when it comes to these lists. The Eliminators were a good tag team as well.

How can any of you leave off the New Age Outlawz!? It just baffles the mind!
Posted By: US (Guest) on September 08, 2010 at 07:59 PM
So, if a team uses cool moves and has good matches, what else do you need to like about them???
Posted By: SS87 (Guest) on September 07, 2010 at 11:58 PM
THere is a difference between liking a team and having them in your top five all time favorite tag teams.
I love the Midnight Express, but they weren't cool heels (or bad ass heels), didn't cut their own promos, showed little charisma, and had a legendary irritating manager.
If you put a couple of pudgy guys pretending to be pretty boys (or one pudgy guy and stan lane) on your list then you probably have only seen their matches after the fact or picked them to sound knowledgeable.
having the midnight express # 1 just seems like someone trying to prove they are a smark and that they belong, rather then making up their own mind. I'm not saying that is definitely the case, but it seems like it.

I don't think gay guys cheered the Hardys, Rockers, and MCMGs the way all of the lame emo teens, 5 year olds, and fat pre-teen and teen age girls did. They probably liked LOD, Powers of Pain, and Steiners.
I just think its funny that this site has a bunch of people that only know old school wrestling through youtube videos and have never watched a whole event that isn't from this era.

Thanks for using tag teams that stuck together for years, and not crappy, Rock and Chris Benoit, super tag teams that might have held the belts to advance a plot. And thank you for not including the Dudleys. Fake belts mean nothing when it comes to chemistry. Fake as in calling yourself a WCW tagteam champ. When it was booked by the same company that booked your WWE belts.
Posted By: Thankyou... (Guest) on September 08, 2010 at 08:17 PM
I still get chills when I watch WrestleMania 6 and Demolition coming to the ring and the huge big screen in the background made it look like they were coming into your living room. They should be WWE HOF by now. Anyone mention the Warlord and Barbarian? I know in WWF/E they were a bust, but their promos with LOD in WCW/NWA were killer.

B)Byers said "They had all of the intimidation factor associated with the Roadwarriors, the Legion of Doom, or the Samoan Swat Team, but they also had twenty times the athletic ability and in-ring prowess of those three teams combined." Now isn't that two teams, instead of 3, or did they become a different team when they used the other name in the WWE.
C) Bill and Randy Mulkey, THanks to all who mentioned them

HM: The New Age Outlaws, The Iron Violence Connection, The Road Warriors/LOD, AMW, Beer Money, and The Hardy Boyz.
5). Brutal Glory: Their matches with Chris Matthews & JC Coyne are the stuff of legend in UIW. If you haven't seen them, try to find their matches.
4). Chris Matthews & JC Coyne: The best tag team in their run. Had great matches with every team they faced.
3). The Dudleys: They've won gold everywhere they've wrestled. 'Nuff said.

Byers - too affected by the forum hate. You gotta learn to ignore the haters, man.
My Faves:
1. Hardyz - always loved how the WWE kept trying to present the brothers as being the same, but it was so clear that each Hardy had his own identity. Like JR said, Jeff was the sizzle, Matt was the steak. Lita association a plus.
2. New Age Outlaws - Unfortunately, these guys reigned at a time when the tag division was weak. But both guys had a ton of charisma and were even capable workers back in the day. DX association a plus.
3. Hart Foundation - no need to explain this, just a perfect big man/small man unit. Jimmy Hart association a plus.
4. WGTT - lacking a bit in charisma, but terrific in the ring. I mean, the balls to go around calling yourselves the World's Greatest Tag Team? Sweet. Kurt Angle association a plus.
5. I'll just cram all my honorable mentions here: Brainbusters, American Wolves, MCMGs, E&C
We never had the NWA over here back then-- can anyone point me to some good R&R Express and Midnight Express matches?

This entire column blew chunks. I know alot of people aren't old enough to remember these two teams, but the fact NOBODY mentioned them is fucking criminal.
1. Nick Bockwinkel and Ray "The Crippler" Stevens, managed by Bobby Heenan. One of the most awesome heel tag teams...ever. 3 time AWA tag champs.
2. Stan "The Lariat" Hansen and King Kong Brody. If I have to explain how scary these two were together, then just forget it. Go back to watching the garbage put out today by both TNa and WWE. Tou won't understand it anyway.
And this is to you Chad Nevett....Turn off your fucking TV if you like Miz and Morrison more than the Road Warriors. You don't deserve to ever watch wrestling again. And put the crackpipe down, numbnuts.

Good lists, can't argue your OPINIONS like others are inexplicably attempting to do. Bunch of sycophants here. Some that I'd include that werent mentioned a bunch Benoit/Angle Benoit/Jericho and the APA! Man I loved the
APA! Oh and the American Wolves! Haas and Benjamin. Most of the others were already mentioned.
