411’s Buy or Sell 10.22.10: CHIKARA’s Annual Torneo Cibernetico, Dragon Gate Stables to Include American Wrestlers, Homicide’s Title Chances, More

October 22, 2010 | Posted by Michael Bauer

Welcome everyone to Week 177 of BUY or SELL. For those of you who haven’t been with us since the beginning, here’s the Reader’s Digest version of what this column is all about. BUY or SELL is very much like 411’s long-running Fact or Fiction column. The main difference is that BUY or SELL focuses on topics like the U.S. Independent scene, Lucha Libre, Japanese Wrestling and pretty much anything else that isn’t mainstream wrestling, WWE and or TNA. This allows for these areas to get a bit more press and for you, our loyal readers, to learn even more about the sport of professional wrestling.

Questions are sent out on Tuesday Night.

  • Charly Manson defeating El Negro Casas in a hair vs hair will match will lead to him losing a similar match in a few month time.

Jeffrey Harris: SELL. Just because a guy wins a certain type of match doesn’t mean he will lose the same type of match shortly after. It takes away and ruins the novelty of such an event happening. Edge didn’t lose his hair shortly after beating Angle in a hair vs. hair match. Sean Waltman didn’t lose his hair not long after beating Jarrett. A hair vs. hair or hair vs. mask type of match should be the blowoff to a type of feud and not be done again so quickly after.

Kevin Ford : SELL. I’ll plead complete ignorance here, as I watch no Lucha Libre whatsoever. But judging from a strictly logical point of view, it seems silly to book this way. Granted, I don’t know the ramifications of this match (i.e. if a friend of Casas is looking to avenge his loss), but I just think it takes away from Casas’ shaving if the man who defeated him gets shaved himself just a few months later.

  • Despite the recent struggles, The Bruderschaft des Kreuzes will be victorious in CHIKARA’s annual Torneo Cibernetico.

Jeffrey Harris: SELL. I think they will. It will make their ultimate victory of Torneo Cibernetico that much sweeter. They are just lucky that a duo such as Motorcity Machine Guns or the Kings of Wrestling won’t be competing in it. Because then they would be destroyed.

Kevin Ford : SELL. I don’t say this was a lot of confidence, because I would never count on anything when it comes to CHIKARA. My hunch is that either Eddie Kingston or Vokoder (who will likely unmask during the match) to win it. Ultramantis Black is a good candidate as well. My top 3 picks are from the CHIKARA squadron, making this a SELL in my book, though it wouldn’t surprise me at all if a BDK person won the whole kit and caboodle.

  • Furthermore, Ares and Claudio Castagnoli will retain the CHIKARA Campones de Parejas over the Osirian Portal.

Jeffrey Harris: BUY. Castagnoli is already one half of the greatest tag team duo and champions in the history of wrestling in the Kings of Wrestling. Ares and Castagnoli are one of the best ever wrestling tag teams to come out of the continent of Europe as Swiss Money Holdings. They’ve even taken their greatness to Japan and beaten up punks in NOAH. Osirian Portal aren’t good enough to lace the boots of Ares and Castagnoli let alone become the CHIKARA Campones de Parejas.

Kevin Ford : BUY. I love the Portal to death, believe you me, but they are not the right team to take the straps from Claudio and Ares. In my mind, it either has to be Quack and Jig, or Quack and another person who he happens to have three points with *cough* Shane Storm *cough*. I think this will be an awesome match, but the belt change is either coming in November or December (and rightfully so).

  • Having a draft to allow United States wrestlers to join Dragon Gate stables will lead to another failed stable warfare scenario.

Kevin Ford : SELL . Although both “faction warfares” will be ran by the same booker, the difference is in the companies that ran the angle. Dragon Gate is built around their factions and has been since the Toryumon days. These groups have already been built, have strong members, and wrestlers you can rely on to be there for every show (barring some freak injury or something of that nature). Plus, there are currently one three factions in DGUSA (WARRIORS International, Kamikaze USA, and World-1) with maybe a fourth to come in to play (unless you count the CHIKARA Sekigun as their own group, in which case it would be fifth). When ROH did faction warfare, they had 5 to 6 stables (No Remore Corps, Resillience, Vulture Squad, Hangmen 3, Sweet N’ Sour Inc., along with tangential teams like Delirious/Steen/Generico) and seemed to be formed in order to have a cop out for why “pointless” matches would take place on a card (i.e. Ruckus vs. Adam Pearce). On the contrary, I am happy that they’re finally putting some of these guys into Japanese stables because I feel like the conflict between stables was being buried amongst the USA talent who weren’t affiliated with any group. I think this is actually a fantastic idea and a good way to get some of these guys into groups, as well as open the possibility of a group forming based on the guys who were bitter about not being drafted.

Jeffrey Harris: SELL. I think this is close-minded and a bad way of looking at a very interesting idea and dynamic for Dragon Gate. This could shake things up and see some interesting new groups and teams created as a result. I also particularly enjoy the stable wars in Dragon Gate as their gate stables and multi-tag matches are one of the company’s signatures.

    3 for 4.

  • Of all the announced competitors for Survival of the Fittest, only the two members of the Kings of Wrestlers are believable winners.

Kevin Ford : SELL. Generico, Steen, Edwards, Corino, and Cabana in my mind are are perfectly believable winners (and who knows who the 11th and 12th competitors will be). I doubt Steen and Generico will because of their big match at Final Battle, as it seems silly to give these guys a title shot with one of their ROH careers coming to an end in the not-so-distant future, but I think both guys have been built up to such a degree that they could both be taken as serious threats to the title. Same goes for the other three I mentioned, and I’d actually really like to see Edwards challenge Davey for the belt in 2011.

Jeffrey Harris: BUY. The Kings of Wrestling are professional wrestling pretty much. While the pro wrestling industry has been on a plummeting decline for the past several years, the Kings of Wrestling have been one of the few trend-setting bright spots. They did things no one else was doing and helped revolutionize the tag team wrestling format yet again. The Kings of Wrestling are essentially a blessing to the industry. In 2006 they ended the boring and redundant ROH tag team title reign of Strong and Aries. The Kings of Wrestling were a real actual tag team and an actual tag teaml name. They were so good and so popular they were pretty much uncontested which led to their early split. But eventually cooler heads prevailed and the Kings of Wrestling returned when the industry needed them the most. Chris Hero, the saviour of wrestling, we already know that he has cardios for days and can handle the grueling length and grind that is Survival of the Fittest. Hero has wrestled and been a champion all over the world. He’s had some of the best matches of all time with the likes of Chris Daniels, AJ Styles, CM Punk, and Bryan Danielson. Claudio Castagnoli is a similarly exceptional talent. Now look at the other names in comparison: Rhett Titus, Grizzly Redwood, and Colt Cabana. None of them have proven they have what it takes to go the distance and come out on top of this type of competitive match-up. Quite frankly, I think Hero and Castagnoli will figure out how to both win this match.

    3 for 5.

  • Homicide will find a way to officially work himself into the RoH World Title match at Final Battle 2010.

Kevin Ford : SELL. Man, I am just selling like crazy today! I don’t see the point. Homicide can challenge for the belt in 2010 and not muddle up Richards’ big title shot. Plus, Richards and Strong have a lot of back story that can be played off of and help build to a very compelling singles bout. Homicide has plenty of other options at Final Battle (perhaps a match with the newly signed Daniels? Hmm? Hmm?! Agree with me!

Jeffrey Harris: SELL. Homicide is a great worker and huge part of ROH’s legacy. He helped put the company on the map and had some of the best matches and most brutal feuds ever there. I’m glad Homicide is finally free of the tyranny, stupidity, political, and moronic company that is TNA where he was hardly being showcased at all and probably not being paid as much after Hogan and Bischoff got on that limping joke of a train with that moronic, incompetent nincompoop Dixie Carter in charge who doesn’t know wrestling from Adam. However, that being said Homicide was not a great champion. His title run was lame and forgettable. He was always a better challenger than he was a champion. He had a great title win but that was it. The world title match at Final Battle is about Davey Richards fulfilling his destiny and taking home the ROH title. Homicide would simply take away from that. Daniels is going to beat Roderick Strong, and then Richards will absolutely obliterate and destroy whatever is left. Strong has been building to this moment for years. In 2009, he had one of the best matches ever with KENTA at Supercard of Honor IV. Daniels/Richards will be a fresh and classic main event title match-up. Adding Homicide in there tarnishes things. ROH has always really been better at those great featured one on one title bouts more so than the multi-man fuster-clucks. Keep Homicide out of this one for now.
