411’s Wrestler of the Week 02.28.11: Week 48
Posted by Larry Csonka on 02.28.2011

Welcome to Week 48, Year SIX, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…

Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…

1st - 5
2nd - 4
3rd - 3
4th - 2
5th - 1

If you are wondering how some of the writers decide who to vote for, please check out our Wrestler of the Week Supplemental Column!

Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…

1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1

...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year around WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…

Larry Csonka
1) HHH and The Undertaker

2) John Cena and The Miz: Answered back big time against the Rock on Raw, and even won the tag titles with another partner he didn't like, for all of 12-minutes or so. But the important thing was the answer to the Rock, and how he got the crowd into it. This was simply very good work from Cena this week. And then you have the Miz, a completely unlikable douchebag of a champion. Outstanding.
3) Christopher Daniels: Christopher Daniels delivered big time for ROH over the weekend, including battling through injury to finish his I-PPV match.
4) Roderick Strong
5) Mr. Anderson

Michael Ornelas
1) John Cena
Pretty simple: I enjoyed his work this past week more than anyone else. Mark alert.

2) Roderick Strong: Successful title defense against Homicide during a slow week.
3) Eddie Edwards/Christopher Daniels: Stole the show at the PPV!
4) Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin
5) Triple H

Jeremy Thomas
1) John Cena
People have been waiting for Cena to bust out with the non-PG stuff for a long time. And when he did it, it was pretty damned entertaining, and made for one of the top segments of the week. I don't think this is at ALL a permanent change, but it was a very entertaining diversion that worked well.

2) The Miz: Cut a killer promo against the Rock, won the Tag Team Titles and then voluntarily gave them up to get one over on Cena. Good week in my book.
3) Mr. Anderson: The evolution of "Stone Cold" Ken Anderson continues, as he started off with a good promo and then beat Rob Van Dam and Kurt Angle to become #1 contender to the TNA World Title.
4) Triple H/The Undertaker (tie):
5) Crimson

Chad Nevett
1) Roderick Strong
Defended the ROH World Title against Homicide.

2) The Miz: Cut a great promo, won the tag belts on his own, and then tossed them away just to screw with John Cena.
3) Mr. Anderson: Beat Kurt Angle and Rob Van Dam to become the #1 contender for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship
4) The Undertaker/Triple H
5) Jack Swagger

Ryan Byers
1) Mike the Miz
I wasn't a huge fan of how the main event segment on Monday Night Raw came off this week in terms of burying the Core and the Tag Team Titles, but I will say that it helped the Miz come off like a million bucks. He essentially beat the tag team champions single-handed and got the better of his Wrestlemania opponent John Cena. Combine that with a hot promo firing back at the Rock, and you've got a very solid week for the WWE Champion.

2) Jerry Lawler & Michael Cole: I have to admit it, the segment that entertained me the most this week on wrestling television was the Lawler/Cole showdown from Raw. Cole's commentary is really grating and I don't think that the negative impact it has on the rest of the product is worth the steam it's adding to the Wrestlemania angle, but he is GREAT in a role like the one he had this past Monday, and Lawler is obviously an old pro.
3) Dusty Rhodes: Speaking of old pros, the second most entertaining segment on television this week as far as I am concerned was Dusty Rhodes showing up to add a little bit of sizzle to his son's feud with Rey Misterio Jr. Dusty's performances on the mic are always gold, and I really enjoyed the continuity of the "I would do anything for my son" gimmick first established when Rhodes guest hosted Raw over a year ago.
4) Danshoku Dino
5) Rush

Michael Bauer
1) Roderick Strong
Big RoH World Title defense on Pay Per View this weekend. Strong has looked very good as champion and is doing it in a number of ways.

2) Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin: 2-0 this weekend, including winning an insane main event against the Briscoes.
3) Edge: For getting Vickie fired... no other reason needed.
4) Undertaker / Triple H (Tie)
5) Mr. Anderson

James Cooke
1) The Miz
The most must see WWE Champion in history delivered a stellar promo on Raw, and then won the WWE tag team titles for himself and his upcoming challenger John Cena. The Miz worked an extremely good (in my opinon) series of main event matches that even saw the crowd get behind him! Then, to cap things off, and to return to being the jackass heel that he plays so well, The Miz decided that actually he didn't want to co-hold the tag titles with Cena and turned on the Doctor of Thuganomics, jump starting their feud.

2) John Cena: John Cena reminded us all of how badass he could be in the opening segment of Raw by returning to his rapping roots, dishing out some dissing towards The Rock and his movies. Not only that, but he did add another tag-title reign to his resume.
3) Edge: Finally looks to have seen off the ex. Congrats!
4) Undertaker/Triple H
5) CM Punk

Steve Cook
1) Cody Rhodes
I spend a lot of time in my columns talking about the Dashing One, and I think this stretch leading into WrestleMania is a tremendously important time in Cody's career. It could determine whether he is truly the future star that guys like Rey Mysterio & myself think he is, or if he's another overpushed kid destined to fall by the wayside. His promo & beatdown on Rey on Smackdown this week was the stuff that stars are made of, and of course a lot of credit should also go to Dusty for his crucial role in the angle. I think the American Dream would approve of my vote for Cody here because he would do anything for his son and wants Cody to get the glory.

2) Davey Richards: He scored a victory over ROH Champion Roderick Strong in a 6-man tag in Dayton on Friday night, and was by far the best guy in a match that featured the guys ROH bills as their best workers. It was an impressive performance and I'd be very surprised if he isn't the man that knocks Strong off his throne.
3) John Cena/Miz: They both had solid retorts to Rock's dissing them the week before and were WWE Tag Team Champions for a few minutes there.
4) Jerry Lawler
5) Vickie Guerrero

FRANCISCO RAMIREZ
1) Rush
While promos may be important, Rush actually won a freaking title. The young star beat Ephesto becoming the CMLL World Lightheavyweight champion.

2) Roderick Strong: Retained against Homicide, that's enough for # 2
3) Atlantis and Mascara Dorada: They represented Jalisco Mexico and went on to win the CMLL National Incredible Pairs tourney, for the 2nd year in a row.
4) Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin
5) The Miz

If Miz can pull off some heavy shit tonight, he'll have a firm grasp on the top spot. Only time will tell though.

Miz should win this thing at the end of the year.

He's won the WWE, U.S., and Tag Titles, as well as MITB all in a 12 month span (a "Miz Slam" if you will).

He's been a double champion twice (U.S./Tag, WWE/Tag--you can stretch it and say 3 times if you include U.S./MITB).

He's gone from annoying midcarder to legit main event player, holding 3 high profile victories over golden boy Randy Orton (his MITB cash in, at TLC, and at the Rumble).

Four weeks to go, Miz at #2, down by 2 points with the main event of Wrestlemania in his future. Unless Barret does something spectacular or Miz is absolutely boring in the next month, Miz is your wrestler of the year. Not that he doesn't deserve it, but are all the trolls fucking appeased now?

Posted By: BJC (Guest)  on February 28, 2011 at 03:24 PM

If Miz retains the title at Wrestlemania - which I suspect he might, as two heel champions to end the biggest show of the year would be a real swerve of sorts - then there's nobody who can touch him. He has to be favourite now to win the whole thing anyway, I can't see Bryan or Wade Barrett doing enough to overtake him and Del Rio's not going to catch up. Maybe Edge but I doubt it somehow.

Good work correcting Daniel Bryan's points in the year-end standings after Michael Bauer's votes were mistakenly counted twice last week. We are into the final four weeks now and it is looking like The Miz could be emerging as the winner.

To be honest, when you look at the top 3 he is the only one of those who deserves to win. Bryan has had a few good matches, but has done literally nothing in months and been massively overrated by the IWC. Wade Barrett was on top for a few months when feuding with Cena, but never won the title and is now back in the midcard on the "B show".

Miz has been tag champ, US champ, money in the bank winner, captain of team raw at bragging rights and WWE champion during the year, while constantly cutting great promos and being one of the main players across all WWE shows. It will be a complete joke if Barrett or Bryan wins this thing ahead of him. Hopefully the 411 writers resist their IWC indy mark tendencies to use Daniel Bryan as jerk-off material.

Roderick Strong? LOL. Just another generic bland vanilla midget who has been overrated by sad, fatass basement-dwelling virgins on the internet. Strong couldn't draw flies to a garbage dump, which is where him and his crappy pretend world title belt should be sent to. Strong is just as bad as that other IWC nerd workrate hero Davey Richards - a no-selling, no psychology, bland spot monkey vanilla midget. It's funny watching you sad virgins cream yourselves everytime Richards does his tired, boring, kick out of 100 finishers every match bullshit routine. These ROH no-names will never draw a dime.

Roderick Strong is one guy who actually deserves all the hate, he is the definition of a "vanilla midget" and has no business being anywhere near the ROH title, he makes the whole promotion look even more bush-league than it already is. The sad thing is, when he does lose the strap it will most likely be to another bland vanilla midget - that no selling workrate monkey Davey Richards. ROH is fucking garbage, pull the plug on that dying fed already.

Roderick Strong, Davey Richards and Daniel Bryan are going to compete in a 3 man tournament to determine who is the biggest vanilla midget of them all. Contests include:

    - Who can cut the most generic promo
    - Who can draw the least amount of buys
    - Who can kick out of the most finishers
    - Who can get the most obsessive IWC following
    - Who can float aimlessly in the WWE midcard the longest
    - Who can snap first and murder their family before killing themself to escape justice

Bookmakers currently have Daniel Bryan as the odds-on favorite, though you should never count out Strong or Richards - these guys really know what it takes to be a generic bland overrated vanilla midget.

The Miz has been on a great roll this year. A heel with legitimate heat. He really does deserve to win WotY.

LOL, I really thought that one of these guys would try to find a way give him a vote for that match. As much as I like him, Daniel Bryan doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the top this year.

As far as Strong getting votes, why? Man the ROH World Title's prestige has really gone downhill since AA lost it. Neither Black or Strong were/are good champions. Homicide should have won the belt. He couldn't be any worse than the current champ.

I think Daniel Bryan is a great wrestler, and the story of "Indy worker paying his dues to be a star in WWE" Fairy tale Was Great. But in all Seriousness Daniel ISNT a main-event wrestler yet. Wai Barrett should win if not DEH MIZ should win. Two guys that have actually became Solified Main Event Wrestlers. Sorry But Daniel is still Midcard Fodder. Maybe Sheamus/Bryan at WM will elevate there Stock into Solid Main Event talent.

So Cena headlined Wrestlemania, was involved in the hottest feud of the year, single-handedly elevating Wade Barrett and is now involved in the biggest built Mania match so far this year, and he JUST broke into the Top 15?

411 be sippin' on the haterade against the Doc of Thuganomics.

I would have voted for Lawler/Cole at #1 before reading this article because I enjoyed their segment just a tiny bit more than Undertaker/HHH and Cena's return to thuganomics. But after reading this through I realized I got it wrong. Motherfuckin' Rush got votes! I love Rush. They should get votes every week. By-Tor and The Snowdog! The Trees! Tom Sawyer! 2112! Red Barchetta! Free Will! etc. etc. Rush > Miz + Barrett + Daniel Bryan. Hell, the only wrestlers I might take over Rush on any given week are Morrison, Christian and Goldust. Morrison jobbed out to CM Puke in under 3 minutes. Christian was MIA and Goldust is still out with an injury. That makes Rush the clear winner this week.

Miz is going to have a strong month and win it. Or at least he better.

Byers write up of the Miz was perfect this week, something the other writers should have followed suit with.

Guess one good thing about being without cable for the past 4 months is that I didn't have to watch much of anything that would result in that top 3.

This has been the Year of Miz without a doubt, and it'd be a travesty to see him fall short to Bryan or Barret. While both respectable, The Miz has carried a huge workload and shown the world how legit he is on the mic and in the ring.

am i the only one who still sees Miz as a lame reality tv personality from 7 years ago, with zero wrestling ability and a big mouth?
Cena is useless in the ring, but has 10 times the ability of Miz - which still isnt much.

It's a shame how Daniel Bryan has been booked the last few months. He was getting decent crowd reactions at one point, and his in-ring work still sometimes pops the crowd. A decent feud with Sheamus could be good for both of them.

411 hates Cena almost as much as TNA!

And The Piz is WOTW? He was like the 5th best thing on RAW his week.

Good, The Miz has had an all round awesome year. What has Bryan actually done besides winning the US Championship?

Posted By: Guest#0287 (Guest)  on February 28, 2011 at 06:48 PM

Miz would deserve the win most. He has really improved this year and his first major title reign is way more impressive than former first-time champions in the last years.

Can someone explain to me how Cena's rap wasn't PG? Saying "blow me" while holding a child's toy can't possibly be anything other than PG. There's less PR material in every Pixar/Dreamworks movie.

See, The Rock deserved credit last week because his promo was entertaining. Cena answered back. Yes. But it was a pretty weak answer.

When you declare a first round knockout that means that beyond a shadow of a doubt, you did NOT score a first round knockout.

Cena has lost hardcore two weeks in a row and he's going to lose again tonight. It's truly amazing what fans while buy as quality entertainment when, for six years, they've been beaten into believing that mediocre potty humor is good.

Miz deserves WOTY for more than just in ring abilities. Most don't know Mike behind the scenes..his work ethic is tireless. He visits children's hospitals when he goes to each town, does endless charity work, and also tons of media appearances. Miz has worked his butt off this last 18 months to deserve the success he has acquired. I gained a lot more respect for him this past year.

If Daniel Bryan wins this thing it will prove how blind and deluded these indy marks really are. He would be the most undeserving winner ever. Throughout the year he has been given points for jobbing, being released, competing in meaningless indy matches and cutting promos. It's ridiculous how certain 411 writers are so desperate to see him win this thing.

His only real accomplishment was winning a decent feud with Miz and getting the US title, which he has defended about 2 times and is now more meaningless than ever. He is rarely seen on Raw and gets zero crowd response. He looks awkward on camera and has no on-screen presence or charisma. He looks weak and frail compared to the other wrestlers, and comes across as bland and boring. He has done little to suggest he is anything more than an overrated vanilla midget who will never draw a dollar. I laughed when Miz beat him down and buried him last night on Raw.

Now Miz seems like a more reasonable choice for Superstar of the year than Baniel Bryan and Wade Barrett. I think he's had a much better kayfabe 12 months than either of them.
