411’s Wrestler of the Week 03.21.11: Week 51
Posted by Larry Csonka on 03.21.2011

Welcome to Week 51, Year SIX, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…

Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…

1st - 5
2nd - 4
3rd - 3
4th - 2
5th - 1

If you are wondering how some of the writers decide who to vote for, please check out our Wrestler of the Week Supplemental Column!

Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…

1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1

...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year around WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…

Larry Csonka
1) Eddie Edwards
Eddie Edwards won the ROH World Title on Saturday night in what was a surprise title change. Edwards now has the distinction of winning the ROH Tag, Pure, TV and World Titles.

2) Christian: Christian defeated Alberto Del Rio in a cage match on Smackdown. Could it be a big enough win to get him into the world title match at WrestleMania?
3) Sheamus: Sheamus defeated Daniel Bryan in a very good TV match to win the US Title.
4) Extreme Tiger
5) The Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero and Claudio Castignoli)

Michael Bauer
1) Eddie Edwards
No doubt about it. Biggest win of Edwards' career and one of the best I have seen live in some time. The win was a surprise, but the Manhattan Center exploded for the victory.

2) Sheamus: He is the new United States Champ and looked pretty good in doing so.
3) MVP: Gotta give props for making the IWGP champ submit.
4) Roderick Strong
5) Christian

Michael Ornelas
1) Eddie Edwards
Uhh...DUH! The man won the Ring of Honor World Championship in a huge surprise (but not necessarily an upset) this weekend at Manhattan Mayhem IV. It was also his first shot at the belt. It'll be interesting if this evolves into a lengthy feud with Davey Richards. I cannot WAIT to see this show when it comes out on DVD, and Eddie's win is no doubt the highlight.

2) MVP: Tapped Hiroshi Tanahashi out. Any time you beat New Japan's IWGP champion, you're doing well. As the "big foreign star", MVP is doing really well overseas. Hopefully we'll see his game stepped up enough to get another look from WWE in the future and given a serious push.
3) Sheamus: Dethroned former United States Champion Daniel Bryan in a title vs. career match on Monday. Great bout, too. I'm looking forward to a future encounter between the two.
4) Christian/Kings of Wrestling (tie)
5) Yuji Nagata

FRANCISCO RAMIREZ
1) Extreme Tiger
Rey de Reyes came and went and the biggest upset that night was Extreme Tiger winning the final to become the 2011 Rey de Reyes. El Tigre De TJ went through big names like el Mesias, L.A. ParK and Carlito. The former AAA Cruiserweight Champion had the biggest win of his career on that night.

2) Eddie Edwards: Beat Roderick Strong to become the new ROH Champion. What can I say, I always figured it be the other member of the American Wolves to achieve this, Edwards came through and we have ourselves a new champ.
3) Texano Jr. and Terrible: Ended their feud with Maximo and Brazo de Plata by beating them in a Hair VS. Hair match. Both Texano Jr. and Terrible have not lost a Hair VS. Hair match to this day.
4) Sheamus
5) Zorro

Ryan Byers
1) MVP
This week, in a tag team match, MVP tapped out Hiroshi Tanahashi, the holder of the most prestigious world title outside of WWE. This clearly establishes Porter as a force to be reckoned with in New Japan Pro Wrestling and probably sets him up for a title shot within the next several months.

2) Extreme Tiger: I don't follow lucha libre as closely as I should, but I know enough about it to know that AAA's Rey de Reyes tournament is a big deal. This week, Tiger won that tournament, which, as I understand it, is far and away the biggest victory of his career.
3) Sheamus: Nobody looked better than Sheamus in WWE this week. (Some may argue that Miz did until you look at the fact that his main event segment this week lost large numbers of viewers, unheard of for a Raw overrun.) The King of the Ring had the best television match of the week, and he is now your new United States Champion.
4) Yuji Nagata
5) Heavy Metal

Chad Nevett
1) Eddie Edwards
Won the ROH World Heavyweight Championship.

2) King Sheamus: Beat Daniel Bryan to become the new United States Champion as well as beat the Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston.
3) MVP: Made the holder of the IWGP championship submit.
4) The Miz
5) Gunner

James Cooke
1) The Miz
Made The Great Khali bleed and wore the best bald-wig ever! Oh, and he owned Cena yet again... AWESOME!

2) Sheamus: Ended the 'King of the Ring Curse' by beating Daniel Bryan for the United States title in a terrific match, and then went to Smackdown where he defeated the current Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston.
3) Christian: Defeated the number one contender to the World Heavyweight Championship in a steel cage match. Looks like Captain Charisma could be edgeing his way into the World title match at 'Mania.
4) Eddie Edwards
5) The Corre

Jeremy Thomas
1) Eddie Edwards
The new ROH World Champion takes the belt in a surprise win out of nowhere. It's a huge win, a major feather in Eddie's cap and a big statement for his future. No one else had any level of career advancement.

2) Bully Ray: Am I insane? No, not at all. Last week Bully was stuck in his never-ending feud with Devon. This week (possibly due to Jeff Hardy being a douche, but whatever) he was fighting in a #1 contender's match for the World Title, looked like he could hang with the main eventers during the match and destroyed AJ Styles to end the show. That's quite the confidence step for his singles push.
3) Sheamus: Beat Daniel Bryan in a pretty decent match to become the WWE United States Champion
4) Christian
5) The Miz

Andy Critchell
1) The Miz
All due respect to Eddie Edwards but really this week belonged to The Miz. He continues to look strong on the Road to Wrestlemania and his performance to end Raw was superb. His mimicry of the Rock was dead on and his beat down of Cena felt cathartic and real.

2) Eddie Edwards: I have tremendous respect for ROH and I think that winning their world title is worthy of recognition. And despite the fact that I could not pick the guy out of a lineup, those who follow ROH more closely than I do say that this is a big deal and I am willing to go along with that.
3) Sheamus/Brodus Clay: I thought about throwing Titus O'Neil in here too but since NXT is only available online I decided not to. But Sheamus and Brodus both represented themselves very well on both Raw and Smackdown this week and both made significant steps in their career advancement; Sheamus by winning the US title in a hell of a match and Brodus by having a fun little match with Edge. Sheamus is in the process of being rebuilt and Brodus is in the process of being built up so each event carries its own impact.
4) Titus O'Neil
5) MVP

Eddie Edwards? LOL. The ROH Title is beyond irrelevant, passing from one vanilla no-name to another vanilla no-name. Only a few fatass virgins care about that shitty dying bingo hall fed. These ROH nobodies couldn't draw flies to shit.

All votes concerning Eddie Edwards winning the ROH title should be dq'ed because ROH is irrelevant.

So another vanilla midget won the ROH title, big deal. JTG jobbing to Tyler Reks on SuperStars is more of an achievement than Eddie "couldn't draw hippies to woodstock" Edwards winning that worthless, pretend world title.

Congrats to the Miz winning Wrestler of the Year. When you look back at his rise over the last year, he is a deserving winner, I'm a big fan of Daniel Bryan but he has been overrated so hard by the IWC, he shouldn't even be in the top 5. Look at all Miz has done in the last year:

    - US Title
    - Tag Title
    - Money in the Bank
    - RAW Captain at Bragging Rights
    - WWE champion for 100+ days
    - Main eventing Wrestlemania
    - Holding his own with genuine big stars like Cena and Rock
    - Large amounts of mainstream attention
    - Featured prominently on all shows

Edwards is a poor choice for champ, but at least the title is off Roderick Strong. Strong is the definition of a vanilla midget, the worse ROH champ since Xavier. ROH is dying a slow death now that HDNet has pulled the plug.

All hope isn't gone yet. I'm sure some writers here will list Bryan in all five positions to try to give him a "come from behind" victory!

Eddie Edwards as Wrestler of the Week should be right. WWE superstars don't count anymore because they don't want to refer to themselves as wrestlers anymore which means that they shouldn't be considered in the Wrestler of the Week voting.

I can't disagree with Miz at the top because he has certainly earned it. While I personally favored Bryan, he hasn't had the ongoing momentum that Miz has continually built, especially since his MITB win in July.

1,500 in attendance, which last time I checked is more than TNA could ever do.

Instead of bashing evetything, try getting out of the tunnel and explore the options.

Thats what TNA's marketing is telling you. The ratings however show that in countries outside of the US only a few thousand people watch. The UK is the only exception, they have about 100.000 viewers there, which is 1/20 of what they draw in the US.

Objectively, what happened in TNA last week that was truly noteworthy?

    Jeff Hardy showing up drunk?
Gunnar, previously a Tag Team jobber, winning the (somewhat meaningless) TV Title?

Did anyone in TNA truly distinguish himself last week?

You're making the rest of us put up with your ignorance when you put the same comment every week. Shut up, sit down and actually think about what you are going to write from week to week.

With that said, Congrats to Miz. He certainly deserves the WOTY. As for this week, I think Sheamus should have received the WOTW for his wins over Bryan and Kingston. Eddie Edwards certianly deserves a nod for #2 for the ROH belt, #3 to Christian for his win over Del Rio, #4 to Bully Ray for inserting himself into the Immortal mix and #5 to Gunner for his TV Title win.

See..a thoughtful post without using vanilla midget forty seven times. :D

Except that they have successfully toured both Great Britain and Japan. Multiple times. Besides, the different levels of growth comparison is kind of pointless when you consider that TNA's "growth" is fuelled entirely by someone whose daddy is willing to spend tens of millions of dollars to get his daughter on TV. Furthermore, in New York, which is still one of the biggest wrestling markets in the United States, ROH consistently outdraws TNA.

ROH last British tour was when? 2006? And the venues were small civic halls and the like which can hold a few hundred people. TNA has shows at Wembley arena and Manchester Evening News arena which hold thousands. Also, you're saying TNA's growth is less valid because a millionaire decided to invest in the company? Who cares if his reasons are questionable, thats what rich people do, they buy stuff for fun. At least they still have a TV deal and will be in business this time next year.

Posted By: Guest#3713 (Guest) on March 21, 2011 at 08:44 PM

It doesn't matter if they've been around for the same amount of time. If TNA wasn't bigger than ROH then something would be wrong. Fact is, TNA wasn't turning a profit until around '07 or '08 when they finally started releasing financial info; it's the key reason they started releasing the info. So financially the company was a failure for its first five or so years. How did they survive? Panda.

Meanwhile, ROH starts off as basically a local promotion out of Philly/South Jersey being run by a bunch of video bootleggers who could barely afford their own business let alone a promotion. They slowled added markets as the made more money until now where they are a legitimate national promotions, running shows throughout the country. Meaning to stay in business they've had to at least stay even financially. How did they stay in business? By selling tickets and DVDs, the former of which TNA has never been able to do on a consistent basis. Most of the crowd in the Asylum during their early days didn't pay, and most of the Impact audience doesn't now. The only time TNA sells tickets is overseas, and that's because they're a special attraction. If they ran those areas on a regular basis, they wouldn't keep selling tickets.

To draw a comparison: ROH is the college student that's paying his own way while consistently getting good grades to stay afloat; TNA is the drunk frat boy that keeps failing out but gets chance after chance to return because daddy is bankrolling his partying.

In this case, daddy is both Panda and Spike. Because without Spike putting up a portion of the money for contracts for guys like Sting and Angle, they wouldn't be able to afford that kind of talent. TNA has had every opportunity to succeed and still finds ways to fail (first attempt at signing Hogan, Jeff Hardy, etc.) while ROH has faced set back after set back (Feinstein, talent raids, etc.) but continues to grow as a company.

So...what counts as growth? Apparently new tv deals in other countries isnt, neither is successful tours in other continents. I eagerly await your answer. Also, TNA had 150,000 people watching in the UK last week. Considering wrestling is nowhere near mainstream in the uk, thats impressive. ROH will NEVER get half as many people watching a show. By HDNet? It has penetration, but hardly anyone even knows that channel exists. The HDNet deal was a step sideways even when they first got it. They don't lose much with it gone, other than the fact that they don't have to spend money on TV tapings.

But here's how you define growth: adding new markets where once there were none. Which ROH is doing. They've expanded into the South and Midwest over the last 3 years. They continue to pull sellout or near sellout crowds in their old markets. They just added iPPVs which are almost entirely profit for the company, and most of their iPPVs keep doing at or above the previous which means new fans are buying the shows each time. Yes, 1,000 to 2,000 may not be seem like a lot but sources like Meltzer have reported in the past that TNA only pulls in 10,000 to 20,000 buys for their "real" PPVs which doesn't place them a hell of a lot higher than ROH. They may have 1.7 million viewers on Spike but how many of those people actually spend money on the company? A fraction of a fraction.

Here's the reality - TNA sucks, and with all the names they have signed over the last few years should be doing a LOT better. But TNA is still in a completely different league to ROH, which is an obscure indy fed catering exclusively to a few thousand workrate-obsessed basement dwelling virgins.

A fraction of a fraction.

how is 10,000 and 20,000 not that much more than 1,000 and 2,000? Now you are asking to be ripped on.

also how many PPV buys did ROH do in Canada? 36. 36 buys, which is why they never went back. Sell out crowds of 500 people is not a lot. The Arena is tiny.

I hate TNA, but to say ROH is more relevant is a joke. 1.7 million viewers brings TNA money, you dodo. Advertisers, spike. You just do not know how things work. That is why they were able to claim profit is because they got revenue from TV tapings.

LMAO at all the butthurt ROH fanboys, getting ultra-defensive about their beloved fed. This is why indy fanboys are so easy to troll, they ALWAYS take the bait.

Here's the reality - TNA sucks, and with all the names they have signed over the last few years should be doing a LOT better. But TNA is still in a completely different league to ROH, which is an obscure indy fed catering exclusively to a few thousand workrate-obsessed basement dwelling virgins.

You are the one that is butthurt. The ROH fans are trolling you. Calling people virgins these days is so unoriginal. Come up with something original buddy.

Just ignore the ROH fanboys, they are just bitter because their indy darling Daniel Bryan has been exposed in the big leagues as a generic vanilla midget with no charisma, promo skills, presence or star quality. Daniel Bryan couldn't draw flies if he was buried up to the neck in shit.

Damn that ROH and lack of drawing power. Nevermind that a good 25-50% of the known(whether liked or not) workers started or wrestled at one point on ROH.

I think that the NWA championship needs more recognition. Why? Because if it wasn't for the NWA we wouldn't have seen WCW(for what it was worth) or have TNA the little promotion that could. I think ROH, EVOLVE, PWG, DGUSA, Chikara, etc need to band together to put on more NWA territory vs territory style supercards. At least that way they can get their star players some more recognition nationwide and help elevate them to, let's be honest, the big stage. Let them get that contract and go to New York or Florida. Let them get to where the money is right now.

On a final note, don't be so quick to count out ROH. If they could get the solid financial backing they need, they could really start to become a contender. But for now we will have to settle with them being the #3 promotion in the US until something turns around for them and they can begin to get some national recognition and really find out who will be able to cut the mustard in the business.

At some point over the last year or 2 "Wrestler of the Week" became "Career Advancement of the Week". Just saying...
