411’s Wrestler of the Week 03.28.11: Week 52
Posted by Larry Csonka on 03.28.2011

Welcome to Week 52, Year SIX, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…

Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…

1st - 5
2nd - 4
3rd - 3
4th - 2
5th - 1

If you are wondering how some of the writers decide who to vote for, please check out our Wrestler of the Week Supplemental Column!

Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…

1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1

...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year around WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…

Larry Csonka
1) Madison Eagles
Madison Eagles continues to be the most dominant women in wrestling, and proved that with another big weekend. She defended the title against Mercedes Martinez, former champion MsChif, and finally Hamada in one weekend to continue her roll as SHIMMER champion.

2) Tomoka Nakagawa and Daizee Haze: Theywere very successful at the weekend SHIMMER tapings, winning singles matches as well as tag team matches, including a win over Misaki Ohata & Hiroyo Matsumoto to win the SHIMMER tag team titles.
3) Misaki Ohata & Hiroyo Matsumoto: Won the SHIMMER tag team titles over the weekend from the former dominant Champions, The Canadian Ninjas.
4) Christian
5) Wade Barrett

FRANCISCO RAMIREZ
1) Extreme Tiger and Jack Evans
The young team went over the AAA Tag-Team Champions Los Maniacos: Silver King and Ultimo Gladiador. This win comes after Extreme Tiger also won the Rey de Reyes 2011 final, making the tag titles held by the 2011 Rey de Reyes and the AAA Cruserweight Champion.

2) Wade Barrett: Won the WWE Intercontinental title, while the title is far from holding the prestige it once had, this is still a career first for Barrett and another title in the hands of the Corre.
3) Christian: Once again defeated Alberto Del Rio.
4) Madison Eagles
5) Ultimo Guerrero and Escorpion

Ryan Byers
1) Christian Cage
I'm not entirely certain why WWE decided to go with this result, but the fact of the matter is that, this week, Christian got a big win over the number one contender to the World Heavyweight Title clean in the middle of the ring. On top of that, it was probably the best television match of the past seven days. All in all, that's a pretty big week for the guy who for so long has been seen as nothing more than a midcarder by upper management in the company.

2) Daisuke Sekimoto: Sekimoto, a Japanese indy wrestler who I'm really high on right now, had two major accomplishment this week. The first is that he and his protege Yuji Okabyashi invaded the big league of All Japan Pro Wrestling and won the company's All Asia Tag Team Titles. Then, just days later, he retained the world championship of German promotion wXw by pinning fellow Big Japan wrestler Shinya Ishikawa.
3) Madison Eagles: SHIMMER taped four big shows over the weekend, and the reigning SHIMMER Champion, Madison Eagles, was dominant. On the first night of tapings, she retained the title over both number one contender Mercedes Martinez and former champion MsChif. She had a bit of a hiccup on night two when she was pinned by Ayako Hamada in a tag team match but quickly recovered and beat Hamada in yet another title defense. Eagles is the new face of women's wrestling. Period.
4) Misaki Ohata & Hiroyo Matsumoto
5) Daizee Haze & Tomoka Nakagawa

James Cooke
1) Wade Barrett
He was the 'end of days' for Kofi Kingston's Intercontinental title reign, and brought Championship glory back to England!

2) Christian/Alberto Del Rio: This match was brilliant, and easily the best on TV this week. So many near falls, and so much unpredictability (unless you read spoilers). Captain Charisma pullled off the upset victory here for the second week in a row against the Number One Contender, but Del Rio certainly continues to prove himself as a main eventer.
3) The Miz: Wins Wrestler of the Week Year 6. Awesome!
4) CM Punk
5) John Cena

Michael Ornelas
1) The Miz/Daniel Bryan
Was great on Monday night with the inversion of the W on the WWE Championship...but I'm actually choosing him for being entertaining and fun on Conan. I've seen every episode, and he was one of the 5 best guest stars since the move to TBS. Bryan gets the nod for wrestling one of the greatest mixed tag team matches in some time with Gail Kim and ALSO being briefly shown on Conan.

2) Wade Barrett: Championship!
3) Christian: Sure does look like he belongs in a certain WHC Mania match after going over Alberto Del Rio again.
4) Extreme Tiger & Jack Evans
5) Layla (stole my heart with the fist-pumping)

Michael Bauer
1) Wade Barrett
He is the new Intercontinental Champion by beating Kofi Kingston in a pretty good match. He then beat Kofi yesterday in a house show to retain.. or does that not count since nobody saw it?

2) Christian: Beats Alberto Del Rio for the second week in a row and looks poised to get a WrestleMania title shot.
3) Extreme Tiger and Jack Evans: Nothing else happened, so the new AAA Tag Champs get noticed.
4) Takashi Sugiura
5) Madison Eagles

Chad Nevett
1) Wade Barrett
Your new Intercontinental Champion!

2) Christian: Another win over Alberto Del Rio...
3) The Miz: Would have been higher if he'd gotten rid of the spinner belt entirely...
4) Madison Eagles
5) Extreme Tiger and Jack Evans

Jeremy Thomas
1) Christian
Christian beat the World Heavyweight Title #1 Contender for the second week in a row. Sounds like a push to me...

2) Wade Barrett: Wade beat Kofi for the Intercontinental Title. It's almost odd to think that this is Wade's first WWE belt, it seems like he's had one before, but there you have it.
3) Daizee Haze and Tomoka Nakagawa: Beat the Seven Star Sisters to end their one-day reign as SHIMMER Tag Champions after they had ended the two-year reign of the Canadian Ninjas.
4) Madison Eagles
5) The Miz

    Really Ornelas??

I think it's awesome that the top 3 are relatively new to the WWE/WWE's main event scene.

Just ignore Ornelas, he has Danielson's dick stuffed so far down his throat he struggles to talk.

can't wait to see who stars off year 7 week 1 to see if they finish off on top. ADR may be the one to do it, if he has a great mania match, and can carry that momentum throughout the year....

That picture of Miz is priceless lol. His year in wrestling has been the prototype year though. Da well. Lets see how the new year starts off next week.

Will the IWC please stop deluding themselves that Christian is going to be added to the Edge vs Del Rio title match? WWE is NOT going to change the title match less than a week before 'Mania.

Wow Byers, you're so cool! Calling him 'Christian Cage'. Reminds me of when you'd call the skull crushing finale 'the stroke' and Daniel Bryan by his real name. Ha...good times.

Posted By: Guest#8119 (Guest)  on March 28, 2011 at 03:44 PM

They should've chosen a better pic for the Miz. Other than that I have no complaints. Danielson has come a long way to make a name for himself in the world's largest promotion.

Barrett was in arguably the hottest storyline of 2010. I'm glad he won the IC Title and will hopefully move on to bigger things next year.

Undoubtedly the Miz deserved it. He was the sole reason the WWE was worth watching this year.

For all of the crap that the 411 staff gets for "ignoring" TNA, think about this: what TNA wrestler actually did anything to stand out?

I knew one of these guys was going to give Bryan a vote form that Superstars match. I should have figured it would be from his BFF, Michael Ornelas.

Come on Ornelas, do you really enjoy trolling your readership that much?

I agree, the last week should be the week of WM. The Monday after WM, we get a winner of WOTY, then start the next one. I think it makes the most sense.

Even though I don't like the guy, no one deserves it more than the Miz.In 2010 he was holding the tag and U.S. titles simultaneously, won MITB, and the WWE title all in one year. Now he is MAIN EVENTING WrestleMania against the biggest superstar in all of wrestling of the last 6 years in John Cena. That's is a WOTY performance. So bravo Miz.You came along way from being the guy who was hosting Diva contests to being one of the biggest stars in all of wrestling and I can't believe this but I really am proud of you.I'm one of a few big indy fans on this website, but I'm glad Daniel Bryan didn't win because quite frankly he didn't deserve it.He don't even deserve to be in the top 15.The most notable thing he did was win the U.S. Championship.Wade Barrett also deserve to be the number two guy so here's to him for the year he's had.But yeah, I'm actually happy the Miz won and this is coming a guy who don't like him and is still warming up to him as a wrestler. But I give credit where credit is due and it's about time all of the IWC start giving credit where credit is due.

Ornelas is just another indy mark fanboy who trolls 411 readers by picking his vanilla midget hero Daniel "zero charisma" Bryan every week in a desperate attempt to get some recognition or attention, he is pretty much a Ryan Byers wannabee - which may actually make him the most pathetic loser ever. Kudos Ornelas, you sad sack of shit.

Agreed, if they are going to do a literal 52 weeks year then why not just start in january and end in december? It makes sense for the "wrestling year" to start with the Raw after Wrestlemania and end at Wrestlemania the following year.

LOL. These guys throw votes at midcarders like Daniel Bryan for appearing for 2 minutes or winning jobber matches, or praise some indy no-name for winning some insignificant spotfest, but they hardly EVER vote for John Cena. In the last year Cena has done so much to put over the likes of Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Nexus, Miz etc., and these smarks cant even see it. My prediction for next year's winner: CM Punk.

When did Larry Csonka stop having realistic and credible opinions on wrestling, and become such a blatant and boring indy mark? It's actually sad to see Csonka having such fanboyism about some random women-only indy fed of no-names. Nobody gives a shit about SHIMMER Larry!

Is it really too much to ask for a staff wide explanation as to why they rank people for having matches that they clearly didn't see?

I'm not saying it's a horrible idea (even though I'm not personally a fan of it) but there does seem to be a bit of inconsistency.

When TNA tapes three weeks' worth of iMPACT! in three days do the results get taken into account for each week individually? All three in that one week? Both?

What's with all Indy guys getting a ton of votes this week besides Barrett and Christian? A majority of us have no idea who they are.

It was a piss-poor year, man. I've seen wrestling hit some lows. But damn. Look at that top 3. And if Miz was the best this year had to offer...........fuck man, I really just don't know what to say.

End of the year "feel good" votes. Most of those guys don't deserve votes when the voting counts. But since The Miz had it wrapped up last week, the voters can go ahead and do it.

Ornelas was just having one last troll, it's not like it really mattered in the end, so I don't blame him for taking the piss with Bryan.

So I assume that people deliberately didn't vote for the new IC champion just to make sure he didn't win WOTY

Thats just fucking awesome The Miz one, and look who he beat the indy darling who he taught how to be a pro on NXT.

The Miz wrestler of the year? Sorry, I won't be reading the wrestling columns on this site anymore. You guys are Miz nuthuggers...

If you do the math, you'll see that it was impossible for Barrett to win WOTY, no matter who voted for him this week. Even if Wade got first place this week and Miz didn't place at all, Miz still had the award locked based on his points from prior weeks.

Lol. Thanks for the laughs, mark. Here's how Daniel Bryan's WWE career is going to pan out over the next year:

    - job to Sheamus at Wrestlemania
    - compete on superstars and in 5 minute matches on Raw until the draft
    - drafted to smackdown, brief push for a month or 2 before falling back down the card
    - months of being anonymous and directionless, having an occasional decent match on smackdown but getting no angles, feuds, or crowd reactions
    - Either released, or asks for release, after next year's wrestlemania
    - Returns to indies, a few indy marks jerk themselves off to him, most fans don't even notice he has left WWE or remember anything he did

I am not sure which is funnier...

    1) The butt hurt whiny bitches who crawl out from under their mommy's skirts to complain about 'why X won WOTY' when the list is just as fake now as it was when Flair won

    or

    2) the people who show up every year to complain that they don't understand why this list doesn't follow either the calendar year OR run exactly from Wrestlemania to Wrestlemania. Again, for 7 years I have watched as people have made an argument for one or the other, and still not get it at all.

The list starts at Wrestlemania, ends the Monday before Wrestlemania, making it an even 52 weeks.

And it is still a fake list, with the sole purpose of it being publicly 'reward' the wrestler with the best kayfabe career over the last year, and to privately troll the people who read it to get the clicks.

In all reality, and despite that I have personally shat on him since he first appeared on the scene, there isn't a wrestler that deserves the 'honour' of winning this than The Miz. The fucker proved the world wrong by making it, and the fact that the writers were able to troll the readers at the same time with that fact just proves that he was the right choice.

So, congratulations to The Miz, I am sure he will, just like the rest of the winners, absolutely never know that he won top spot on a fake list because the congratulatory email from Csonka will go right into his junk email folder, wasting the grand prize of 3 dozen AJ Grey skank pictures and a bunch of Twitter links.

The real funny thing is that you have been reading this "fake list" every week for 7 years. Try going outside for once.

It doesn't take me a long time to read, but then again, I am not a product of the American education system, so I learned how to read at a young age.

Sorry you took it so personally.

"Cena has done so much to put over the likes of Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Nexus, Miz etc"

Not really. He lost to Sheamus via falling through a table and then by Nexus beatdown. Barrett he put over a little more, but he treated most of their feud like a joke.
Miz - it remains to be seen what happens at Wrestlemania.

Cena isn't quite as bad at putting guys over as many people claim, but he's not exactly made any stars this year.

I love the WOTW idea and how it perfectly determines who really is the WOTY. What I don't like is how each year goes by without a celebratory column explaining how said winner won and how the year played out in detail. It makes the whole thing seem pointless. The winner gets a picture? That's it? No column disecting how the guy won and who was in the lead and why they lost and so on and so forth? The next week we just start over with no acknowledgement of the previous year? It just seems anticlimatic.
