CMLL Press Conference

CMLL held a press conference with a bit of news. To everyone’s surprise, and I’m being sarcastic, a new tournament was announced! Apparently this one will feature veterans like El Negro Casas, Ultimo Guerrero, Shocker and Blue Panther taking a set of young luchadores under their wing and mentoring them. Supposedly this is supposed to last up until May 20, 2011. The tournament will be called Forjando a un Idolo, translated Forging an Idol. The tournament will be league based with 3 points per win, and 1 point per draw. The groups will be as follows per CMLL.com:

Group Alpha (Negro Casas): Hijo del Signo, Hombre Bala Jr., Puma King, Diamante
Group Bravo (Ultimo Guerrero): Palacio Negro, Angel de Oro, Escorpion, Rey Cometa
Group Charly (Shocker): Guerrero Maya, Metal Blanco, Delta, Dragon Lee
Group Delta (Blue Panther): Angel de Plata, Magnus, Polvora, Fuego

Also on the conference it was announced that Mascara Dorada has forfeited the CMLLWorld Lightweight title because according to him he’s moving up to a new weight division, Dan Henderson he is not! Now he has his sights set on the CMLL World Middleweight Championship that is held by Jushin “Thunder” Liger.

Ultimo Guerrero Retains 04/04/2011

The Tigre Rojo and Black Tiger feud continues. While they were both members of an opposing team, Tigre Rojo took the win for his team pinning Black Tiger with the aid of the ring ropes. After the match challenges were thrown out for Championship and Mask matches.

Mr. Niebla had his shot at Ultimo Guerrero’s CMLL World Heavyweight Championship and unfortunately he came out short. While both Luchadore’s were tied at one fall a piece, Ultimo Guerrero took the 3rd fall when he powerbombed Mr. Niebla and put his feet on the ropes for the pin. While Rudo referee el Tirantes counted the pin, it doesn’t look like it was intentional. Now Guerrero retaining isn’t the story of the night, the amazing thing has to be the crowd support that Mr. Niebla had. While the Rudo fans cheered for Niebla, the Technico side did as well. Mr. Niebla obviously has become one of the most popular CMLL Luchadores right now, after the match he asked for a rematch, which I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mr. Niebla win.

Retentions Galore! 04/05/2011

Astral finally had his shot at some gold and unfortunately for him he was unable to dethrone Pierrothito for the Mexican National Lightweight Championship. Astral put in a good fight but in the end Pierrothito took the first and third falls for the win.

Another title challenge that had been issue on the previous week was Polvora challenging Valiente as he was being stretchered out. Valiente accepted the challenge and like a true champion he stepped up and defeated Polvora to retain the Mexican National Welterweight Championship. Last week was the week of challenges, this week was for retentions, maybe next week we will see some title changes.

La Gran Alternativa Final 04/08/2011

La Gran Alternativa has come and gone and the winners this year are Ultimo Guerrero and Escorpion. With Escorpion losing his hair a few weeks back I was surprised to see him and UG come out the winners, but then again, stranger things have happened.

IWRG: Destroyer Loses his Mask 04/03/2011

IWRG held their Guerra del Golfo 2011 which featured two matches to determine the participants of the Main Event, a cage match where the loser would have to be unmasked, Multifaceto and Destroyer advanced to the main event. A Martinete and cage escape later, Multifaceto won his very first mask. Destroyer was revealed to be Freddie Congote Jr., who previously wrestled in AAA as Hilario. He is a luchadore with 12 years of experience, native to Las Angeles, CA and originally trained by Rey Misterio Sr., Shamu Jr. and Acero Dorado Jr.

IWRG: Oficiales Become Contenders, Sort Of! 04/07/2011

Losing the IWRG Intercontinental Trios Championship after holding them for two years reinvigorated Los Oficiales. On April 7, 2011 Los Oficiales: Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, and el Oficial Fierro took on two other teams for the number one contendership for the titles. The other participants were the Psycho Circus and Perros del Mal members Bestia 666, Damian 666 and X-Fly. The match wasn’t without controversy, seeing as how two of the current champions Silver King and Ultimo Gladiador interfered. The Psycho Circus were the first eliminated then Los Perros del Mal lost via DQ thanks to a low blow from Damian. The Oficiales won, but instead agreed to a four way cage match, Los Oficiales will put up their masks, the Psycho Circus as well, Los Perros are putting up their hair and los Maniacos are putting up their titles. My bet is the titles are changing hands.

La Voz/The Voice

You’re definitely right about El Hijo del Santo closing in on Mil Mascaras levels of ego. Lately, I can’t take anything he says seriously either! And a tournament to make a new Mistico sounds really strange.

Posted By: Guest#1180 (Guest)

Right, while ego’s have always been commonplace in Lucha Libre, it’s not too uncommon to hear stories about Dos Caras, Vampiro Canadiense, and the Lutteroth’s, I’ve never heard anything to the extent of Mil Mascaras and now el Hijo del Santo. I have to say though my favorite Mil Mascaras story is when he refused to sign an autograph for a fan on camera because the fan wanted him to sign a non-official, or “pirated” mask. While I understand his side on the “pirated” mask deal, he could have signed something else instead of being a total dick about it.

The mistico tournament is one of the worst ideas from CMLL and that is saying a lot if we are talking about the company that make nearly a institution the 3 on 3 matches, and the one that banned El Hijo del santo from the Arena Mexico, and fire any of his workers that have a match with Santo, and is a insult to the fans, its like saying, hey come and spend your money
in a fake version of our most popular worker, because no one is sure of his identity meanwhile, he is wrestling in another part of the country, and the Mil Mascaras ego is so big because he belives he is god of lucha libre, but like Hulk Hogan he only have great matches in other countries

That’s good, yeah CMLL has some crazy issues, while the Santo thing is more Santo’s and CMLL’s doing than just CMLL, we can’t blame them too much on that. They have gone way overboard with the punishing anyone who works with El Hijo del Santo. While the 3 on 3 matches is easily my least favorite thing when it comes to CMLL. As far as the Mistico tournament, it’s a double edged sword, it could work like the Tiger Mask and Black Tiger gimmick in Japan, on the other hand the fans might never even give it a chance to work. Let us not forget this has worked before with Psicosis and most notable of all La Parka, but that information wasn’t as common knowledge as the Mistico situation.

What channel does AAA air on, I heard it’s the best promotion in the world at the moment, which is something I didn’t believe would ever happen, considering that recently, they were TNA levels of terrible.

I also heard Mistico’s a bit of a jackass in real life, is this true? I’d believe it, nobody that young, that rich, and that famous ever keeps their ego in check.

Currently AAA airs on the Galavision network here in the states. That’s Mexico as well, as of a few weeks Galavision started airing CMLL as well.

Yeah, Mistico’s ego has been heavily documented. He didn’t used to be like that, but once he became a huge star that all changed. He became a dick to the fans and trying to get him to at least sign an autograph was an impossible task. It is really saddening, but what can you do?

Is their any luchador as badass as Ultimo Guerrero? He’s like a Mexican Triple H.

Hell I think he is even more badass than Triple H. Let me put it this way, Triple H hurt the Undertaker at Wrestlemania, Ultimo Guerrero would of killed him! Comment section blows up in 3. 2, 1!

My Top 10 Lucha Feuds/Matches

The List so far:
10. L.A. ParK VS. El Dandy: Box Y Lucha 2004 Match of the Year
09. Blue Panther VS. Villano V, The Ola Lagunera and Villano Saga
08. Rey Mysterio Jr. VS. Psicosis, The World Tour
07. Villanos Vs Los Brazos, The Unmasking of a Dynasty
06. El Perro Aguayo’s Quest for Masks
05. Cien Caras VS. Rayo de Jalisco Jr. The 57th Anniversary show and the Birth of the Lucha Boom

A good wrester or Luchadore who truly knows his craft should be able to display emotion in a match and make the crowd feel that he truly hates his opponent. The feud between Rayo de Jalisco Jr. and Cien Caras is one of those feuds were you truly believe that these two luchadores legitimately hate each other. In the early 90’s Rayo de Jalisco Jr. and Cien Caras were at each other’s throats like rabid dogs. Each one was out for the other’s blood and the hatred boiled down to the biggest type of match in Lucha, a Mask VS. Mask match! Cien Caras was the favorite to win due to various factors. First off, the original Rayo de Jalisco had lost his mask to Blue Demon, leaving Rayo Jr’s identity to not be as big of a secret, on the other hand Cien Caras had Mascara Año 2000 and Universo 2000, his legitimate brothers who were also masked, with Cien Caras unmasked and revealing his name, everyone would have a good idea of who his brothers were as well. Rayo de Jalisco Jr. added further fuel to the flames when he proclaimed that if he lost he would retire as well! At CMLL’s 57th Anniversary show the feud reached its peak, and to say Cien Caras started the match with a bang would be an understatement! Sorry I had to setup the links since the embed code wasn’t available.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

The match was huge, to use an old Rock N Roll Express reference, the fans were hanging from the rafters. People were turned away, the place was as full as possible. This match, along with CMLL being televised by Televisa, is usually credited as being the spark to the Lucha Libre boom in the 90’s.
The bad blood between these two Luchadores wouldn’t end there. Nine years later their hatred for one another would culminate with another Lucha de Apuestas. This time Cien Caras would place his hair on the line against Rayo de Jalisco’s mask. Rayo de Jalisco Jr. coming out on top once again.

Ke Monito Signing Off!

FR: So what do you think of Forjando un Idolo, Ke Monito, you think the top prize will be the Mistico name and getup?
Ke Monito: That’s a high possibility, they should have a tournament but for females only to crown the new Novia de Jason!
FR: Why the hell would they do that?
Ke Monito: I don’t know, I’m just into la Novia de Jason.
FR: They should crown a new Ke Monito!
Ke Monito: Shut the hell up! I’m one of a kind!
