411’s Wrestler of the Week 04.11.11: Year Seven, Week 2
Posted by Larry Csonka on 04.11.2011
Sin Cara debuted in WWE, the Young Bucks won the PWG Tag Team Titles, Alberto Del Rio is the new #1 contender for the World Title and more! Check out 411's Wrestler of the Week for all the details and for an updated look at the Year-End standings!
Welcome to Week 2, Year SEVEN, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…
Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…
Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…
1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1
...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year around WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…
Larry Csonka
1) The Young Bucks (aka Generation ME)
Are once again the PWG Tag Team Champions. While TNA is splitting them up, these guys are still tearing it up on the west coast.
2) Ultimo Guerrero and Escorpion – They won the La Gran Alternativa, a tournament where a younger talent teams with a proven veteran. For a while word has been that Escorpion was in line for a push, and this is more evidence of that.
3) Yuji Nagata - New Japan's Yuji Nagata pinned the reigning All Japan Triple Crown Champion Suwama in a match from All Japan's Champions Carnival show.
4) RVD
5) Sin Cara
Wes Kirk
1) Alberto Del Rio
One of my favorites in the 'E these days, Alberto had a great showing at WrestleMania, but didn't get the job done. Undaunted over the loss of his rent-a-luxury-car, he fought Christian for a Ladder Match at Extreme Rules for the World Championship, and through his usual shenanigans from Brodus Clay was able to take a victory over Christian.
2) Rob Van Dam: RVD has been on a roll in TNA, knocking off big names for months as the world champion and never losing the title. After his contract issues explained by a brutal backstage assault from Abyss, he came back and has been competing well against a variety of opponents. This week, on TNA Impact, he pinned TNA World Champion Sting in a non-title match with the guy he beat up earlier in the show counting the pinfall. Anytime you beat a champion, you get noticed. Also, RVD can still go despite being in his early 40's and has some great matches left in him.
3) Ken Anderson: Although he did not compete, he put the TNA champion and one of the top contenders on notice by punking them out as the special guest referee on Impact. Anderson is a rising star in TNA and the wrestling world, and the former world heavyweight champion is looking to take the title back at Lockdown. After Thursday, he has shown he has what it takes to become champion once more.
4) Christian
5) Sting
Ryan Byers
1) Alberto Del Rio
Aside from the announcement of next year's Wrestlemania main event, this was a pretty quiet week in the United States, with everybody still recovering from the most recent 'Mania weekend. The biggest accomplishment in this quiet week was probably Alberto Del Rio finally shaking a monkey off of his back by defeating Christian Cage, who had beaten him twice in the weeks leading up to WMXXVII. Not only does the victory even the score between the two wrestlers, but it also earns ADR a rematch for the World Heavyweight Title at Extreme Rules.
2) Yuji Nagata: New Japan's Yuji Nagata entered into rival promotion All Japan's prestigious Champion Carnival tournament, and, in the first week of the tourney, Nagata has been a force to be reckoned with. In night one of competition, he pinned KONO. He did drop a fall in night three to Masakatsu Funaki, but the big news is what happened on night two. That evening, Nagata pinned reigning AJPW Triple Crown Champion Suwama, no doubt setting up a title shot for Nagata down the line.
3) Escorpion: CMLL's Gran Alternativa tournament was this week. The tournament is an annual lucha libre event with a veteran and a rookie teaming up for tag matches, with the winning rookie usually getting elevated. This year's winning rookie was Escorpion, who was paired up with the very capable Ultimo Guerrero. This probably means big things for the young wrestler down the road.
4) Sin Cara
5) Yapper Man #1 & Yapper Man #2
Aaron Frame
1) Alberto Del Rio
He beat Christian on SmackDown! to once again become the no. 1 contender for Edge's World Heavyweight Championship which these two will now face off in a ladder match, an Edge specialty, at Extreme Rules.
2) Sheamus: He successfully defended his United Stated Championship against none other than the former US champ, Daniel Bryan and won in a most decisive way by kicking poor Bryans head in.
3) Sin Cara: With an impressive debut, he was all over the United States Champion Sheamus in true luchadore fashion on RAW after Sheamus beat Bryan. Then on SmackDown! he came out and dominated Jack Swagger all the same he did Sheamus.
4) Claudio Castignoli
5) RockNES Monsters (Johnny Yuma and Johnny Goodtime)
Ari Berenstein
1) Alberto Del Rio
Quickly got back up on the bicycle after his Wrestlemania 27 setback. He defeated Christian on Smackdown, regaining position as number one contender to Edge's World Heavyweight Title for Extreme Rules.
2) Sin Cara: Very cool debuts for the former Mistico here, even with the almost Shockmaster-esque close call on the trampoline jump entrance, but he made it through and the rest was golden. It was great to see the smaller flier dominate two larger, bully characters such as Sheamus and Jack Swagger in post-match / interview pull-aparts on Raw and Smackdown. It would be interesting to see Sin Cara booked as a "masked avenger" of sorts, righting wrongs done by bully heels.
3) The Youngbucks (a.k.a. Generation Me): Regained the PWG Tag Team Championships, unseating El Generico and Ricochet (it seems Generico's co-champion, Paul London, was double-booked). The Bucks have super-heat as the top tag team heels in the Reseda, CA based promotion and their new championship run should continue that trend.
4) Yuji Nagata
5) Low Ki / Akira Tozawa (tie)
Francisco Ramirez
1) Alberto Del Rio
Wrestlemania might of been a misstep, but on Smackdown, wrongs were righted and Alberto del Rio is once again the number one contender for Edge's World Heavyweight Championship after a victory over Christian.
2) Ultimo Guerrero and Escorpion: La Gran Alternativa was won by the Rudo team of Ultimo Guerrero and Escorpion. The tournament consists of a veteran taking on a young up and comer under his wing and usually results with the young star moving up in ranks and on to bigger things. After this win Escorpion is one luchadore to watch!
3) Sin Cara: "Ehhhhhh, OH MY GOD! Tramampoline,Trabopoline!" Homer J. Simpson
4) Generation Me
5) Claudio Castognoli
Michael Ornelas
1) Alberto Del Rio
Pretty good match with Christian last week on SmackDown, and he's headed to the next PPV for another shot at Edge's WHC in a ladder match. Good enough for me!
2) The Young Bucks: Defeated El Generico and surrogate partner Ricochet for the PWG Tag Team Championships. At least they can still team up in PWG!
3) Sin Cara: I thought trampolines were for the Indies...
4) Yuji Nagata
5) Sheamus
James Cooke
1) Alberto Del Rio
Is once again the number one contender... but you, you already know that!
2) Sin Cara: Debuted in the WWE on both Raw and Smackdown, leaving the question as to which brand the masked grappler will be signed to open for now. Sin Cara demonstrated his awesome entrance and took out former WWE and World Heavyweight Champions. I'm loving the menacing point of the finger he makes when atop the ramp too.
3) Sheamus: I'm loving Sheamus's slightly different take on being the United States Champion; He is Champion of America, and he's embracing this by altering his attire and proudly proclaiming that fact. He then beat former US Champ Daniel Bryan in dominating fashion.
4) The Rock/John Cena
5) Cody Rhodes
Michael Bauer
1) Sin Cara
Yes, Del Rio is #1 contender again, but Sin Cara made the biggest splash with his debuts on Raw and Smackdown this week by totally owning Sheamus and Swagger. Where he ends up is anyone's guess, but for now, the prospects are good wherever he lands.
2) Alberto del Rio: Finally beats Christian, but he now gets Edge in a Ladder Match.
3) The Young Bucks (Generation Me): PWG Tag Champs again, though I bet TNA fucks this up for splitting them up.
4) Sheamus
5) Mr. Anderson
Greg DeMarco
1) Alberto Del Rio
Alberto won in what I thought was a very entertaining match against Christian. He's now the #1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship, and hopefully wins the title at Extreme Rules. And if he does, it's a waste and should have happened at WrestleMania.
2) Christian: Great match with Alberto Del Rio, and if "Captain Charisma" doesn't get the push now he just isn't getting it. Although if he finally turns on Edge at Extreme Rules it'll be one month too late. I'll be glad if it happens, but it'd still be too late.
3) Sin Cara: That's one hell of a way to debut, against two guys who have three world title runs between them. I was impressed, but he was put in a position that did nothing but showcase his high flying ability. I'm looking forward to seeing him actually put on an entire match.
4) Claudio Castagnoli
5) The Rock/John Cena (tie)

No mention of a random TNA wrestler that has done nothing exceptional except maybe shooting a insane promo that would fit Jerry Springer Show.

Slow Week, but regardless...
...Nobody cares about Eddie Edwards...

This time last year Swagger was crushing.
Posted By: Guest#1937 (Guest) on April 11, 2011 at 02:26 PM
LOL. Swagger was one of the worst world champions in WWE history, I've never seen a guy fall down the card so fast after losing the belt. Now he is Michael Cole's lackey, lol.

This is the earliest we've ever had a really diverse Year-End Standings. All we need is an Australian, and that never happens. Maybe when Sforcina returns to Ask411...

"(it seems Generico's co-champion, Paul London, was double-booked)"
Unlike Dennis Stamp who was not booked.

Slow week indeed.
1) Alberto del Río... but you already knew that. Became Nº 1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Championship AND beat Evan Bourne in 2 minutes.
2) The Young Bucks. Won (once again) the PWG Tag Team Championships after losing them a year ago.
3) Sin Cara. He made a big impact, but championships (even in the indies) count more for me.
4) Rob Van Dam. Pinned TNA World Champion Sting, and the title is still valuable enough for this to mean something (though it was mostly an angle).
5) "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. He may not be wrestling but he OWNED the first episode of Tough Enough.
P. S.: Who the hell are Yapper Man #1 & Yapper Man #2?
P. S. 2:

I don't know how anyone could vote for Sin Cara. So far he's just Shockmaster II as far as I'm concerned.

Serious question-How did Ric Flair win year one?

DUMBASS, Swagger has been BOOKED as one of the worst champs in history as opposed to BEING HIMSELF a bad champ.
He won the title to an epic POP and in the same episode of SD and the next one the following week, gained TREMENDOUS HEAT.
To the point he could not speak at all because of the boos.
He also got a very CLEAN Pinfall victory over Superman Boreton to retain the WHC and then got booked like a joke of a champ while he is totally main event material, both charisma and in ring skills wise.

The big difference is that Sin Cara has already gotten totally over with the crowd with two quick segments, a few flips, and pointing at Sheamus.
That's huge.
