News and Views from South of the Border 05.08.11: The Last of a Dying Breed

May 8, 2011 | Posted by Francisco Ramirez

Wow, it’s been a freaking busy week for me, so if this weeks column reads a little rushed, it’s because it was. Bin Laden has been taken care of, Charly Manson was released, I welcomed a newborn Ke Monita to my household. Hell of a week indeed. Oh, not to mention the new look! To the banner!

La Voz/The Voice

Hey man, this was my first time checking out your column. Liked what I saw! Keep it up. And don’t feed the trolls! Spencer Mallard is precisely that.

Posted By: Michael Ornelas (Guest)

Sweet, wait, you write here and it’s that was the first time checking this out? Hmmm, something’s wrong with that! Then again, trolls have there needs, like trolling about TNA on a lucha column.

You have 0 coolness points in my eyes. Unless number 1 has a good video and a better story than Gringos Locos there is no excuse in my eyes. Im gonna guess your number one is Perro Aguayo vs Konnan

Posted By: laparkinator (Guest)

That’s what I figured! To be honest I was surprised nobody ripped me a new one for the placement of the Black Shadow and Santo mask match. Perro and Konnan? Come on laparkinator, I’ve mentioned you as being one of my weekly regulars and I can’t believe you missed that, it’s already on the list! Part of number 6 to be exact. No number 1 is something way better than Konnan and Aguayo, unfortunately the video isn’t of the best quality.

Thanks for the Forjando un idolo explanation, i wanted to know the rules because they arent very clear, and if the When the World Collide isnt your first then there could only be the other greatest match in mexican history and is Atlantis vs Villano 3 Mask vs Mask and if that is not you n°1 match then i have no clue

Posted By: Rabidwolverine (Guest

Yeah Forjando un Idolo can be confusing, especially with the damn bonus points. Good news is the tournament is almost over and it hasn’t been the total bomb that many thought it would be! Wow, damn good guess!

What’s the situation with Lucha PPV’s?

The only one’s I can remember are When Worlds Collide, the AAA PPV, and the CMLL show with Atlantis vs. Villano III. Both shows were said to be some of the greatest PPV’s of all time.

You would think if the shows were that good, then both companies would be in a better situation as far as money and mainstream attention goes What happened with PPV’s? Do either company still air PPV’s? If they do, why aren’t they more successful?

Posted By: Quick Quote (Guest)

Ok, lucha PPV’s are still around, they just air in Mexico and not in the U.S. Most of AAA’s big shows like Triplemania and Guerra de Titanes are shown on pay per view, once again, they just don’t air in the U.S. I really don’t know if they would make much difference, especially seeing as how the shows that air in the states are usually delayed up to three weeks. As far as how succesfull their ppv’s are, I really wouldn’t be able to comment on that since I couldn’t find any solid figures. They must be doing ok at least since they still do air. Although I would at least like for them to air as IPPV’s, kind of how ROH and other indys are doing their ppv’s.

Great column as ever.

Needs more Dr. Cerebro, though.

Posted By: BlueMeanieUK (Guest)

Thanks for the support, more Dr. Cerebro? You got it, scroll down. Now for the news.

Dorian Roldan tweets!

Dorian Roldan is obviously a huge fan of Twitter. He’s constantly on it and one of his recent Tweets consists of him asking fans what TNA wrestler they would like to see at Triplemania. While the concept is hardly new, Roldan and Konnan do seem to like having foreign stars as a draw, past years Abyss and Christopher Daniels have appeared, as well as guys like Jeff Jarrett and AJ Styles on other AAA shows. I suggest everyone spam Roldan with requests for a Dr. Wagner Jr. and Kurt Angle match.

L.A. ParK loses due to Zorro again!

AAA’s show on April 30, 2011 was more of the usual stuff to say the least. Bizarro members faced members of the Black Family, with the Bizarros going over and Cibernetico getting on the microphone saying they took out La Parkas backup. Also going on a tirade on how La Parka is going to pay for messing with his motorcycle. Let’s see, Cibernetico hurts La Parka’s kid, La Parka retaliates by messing with Ciber’s bike? Fair exchange, I guess.

The war between the Psycho Circus and Los Perros del Mal continues with more interference and drama. The Psycho Circus took a win via DQ. The end result came when el Hijo del Perro Aguayo and Bestia 666 ran in. All this buildup looks to be for a Mask Vs. Hair match, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

The Main Event of the card was an Ejercito AAA and La Sociedad members match. Nicho El Millonario, Heavy Metal and el Mesias teamed up against the team of L.A. ParK, Chessman and el Hijo de Lizmark, who was subbing in for Zorro. Just like last week L.A. ParK had el Mesias beat when Zorro came out and and caned L.A. ParK. Well to be fair it was a masked Zorro. L.A. ParK, obviously upset put the blame on Konnan, Konnan denied any knowledge. This better be leading up to a AAA Mega-Championship match between ParK and Zorro!

Charly’s Out!

Information is slim but according to AAA, Charly Manson is out of prison! The news was released on May 5, 2011 via, what else, Twitter. As of writing no details had been released but Charly Manson has been booked for a AAA show on May 13, 2011. Of course we will keep you posted with any details.

A New Stable is Born

Oh Rey Bucanero, you left los Guerreros de la Atlantida to join la Pesta Negra, now you leave la Pesta Negra to form a new group. Texano and Terrible, who were part of los Hijos de Averno have now left that stable and along with Rey Bucanero have joined together to form a new stable. So far this group has remained nameless, but one key factor that was always at Bucanero’s side during his Pesta Negra run was Zacarias, the parrot for those not in the know. Zacarias tried to join the group but was kicked away by Texano Jr. and Terrible. Looks like this is more of a serious turn for Bucanero, good since he was too damn goofy with La Pesta Negra.

Ultimo Guerrero VS Hirooki Goto 04/29/2011

CMLL held a 55th anniversary show for Arena Mexico on April 29, 2011. The lineup was pretty solid with some more Forjando Un Idolo matches. El Hijo del Signo accumulated a total of 6 points when he defeated Puma King who still stands at zero points.

Diamante took a win over Hombre Bala Jr. Diamante took three points to make a total of nine, Hombre Bala Jr. stood at three points.

What should have been the main event of the show, but for some reason wasn’t, was the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship match between Ultimo Guerrero and Hirooki Goto. These two had been building up towards this match for the past month. Hirooki Goto came in ready to work, but in the end Ultimo Guerrero showed why he is “De Otro Nivel” translated “On Another Level”, when Guerrero took the last fall after a Guerrero Special.

The Main Event was the Technico team of Rush, La Mascara, and La Sombra who won two straight falls against Negro Casas, Averno and Mr. Niebla.

Dr. X used his Rudo ways to gain a victory for his team. Accompanying Dr. X were Skandalo and Arkangel de la Muerte. On the other side was Rey Cometa, Pegasso and Fuego. Fuego and Dr. X have been building up to a possible Mask VS Mask match. The victory in this match came about when Dr. X took off his own mask and tossed it to Fuego, causing the ref to DQ Fuego.

Photo:cmll.com

The final match of the card consisted of another Rudo victory. Hector Garza and Atlantis teamed up with the ever popular Rudo Mr. Niebla. Their opponents on this card were the father and son team of Super Porky and Maximo who were accompanied by Black Warrior. The Rudos won the match thanks to Atlantis pinning Super Porky via a small package.

Forjando Un Idolo Standings

Yeah hope you can read that! Well for those with bad vision the standings are as follows.

Angel de Oro and Fuego will be facing each other on May 13, 2011 to decide the first finalists in the tournament. On the same day Hijo del Signo will face Polvora for a semi-finalist spot. Escorpion and Delta will go at it for another semi-finalist spot. The two semi-finalists will face each other on May 20, and the winner of that match will face the winner of Angel de Oro and Fuego. Did you catch all of that?

IWRG: Villanos and Wagner Jr. Victorious 4/28/2011

IWRG continues being the promotion with young up and coming luchadores, and veterans that are willing to work with them. No further proof is needed than some of the matchups on their April 28, 2011 card.

IWRC Intercontinental Tag Team Champions el Pirata Morgan and el Hijo del Pirata Morgan defended the Tag titles against Trauma I and his father el Negro Navarro. The Pirata family retained the titles via a DQ in the third fall. Trauma I and Hijo del Pirata Morgan were left in the ring, with the elders having been eliminated, when Pirata Morgan came back in and low blowed Trauma I. Negro Navarro came in the ring to protest but ended up DQing his team for coming back into the ring after being eliminated.

Photo:estrellasdelring

The main event consisted of a six man tag. This time el Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. joined up with Ray Mendoza Jr., formerly known as Villano V and his brother Villano IV against the father son duo of Bestia 666, Damian 666 and Perros del Mal stablemate X-Fly. The Villano team took the victory.

IWRG: Black Family Upset! 05/01/2011

The sons of el Negro Navarro, Trauma I and II joined up with Multifacetico. Their opponents were the Black Family, comprised of Dark Ozz, Dark Cuervo and Dark Espiritu. If you would of told me that the Traumas and Multifacetico would be taking the victory on this one I would of second guessed you. Well the Traumas and Multifacetico took the win on this one.

PDM: 3rd Anniversary show dated

While it has been delayed numerous times, for some obvious reasons of course, but the Perros Del Mal promotion has finally dated their 3rd Anniversary show, and also announced the main event. The show is scheduled for May 29, 2011 and the main event of the card will consist of the Psycho Circus facing Perros del Mal members Super Crazy, Damian 666 and the returning Hijo del Perro Aguayo in a Mask Vs Hair match, which might I add, will take place in a cage. The feud between the two groups had been slowly building up, and it looks like it’s ready to reach it’s climax with this match. Also have to give them props for their promotional poster.

Lucha Poster of the Week

Lucha Video Break

As was asked, the column needed more Dr. Cerebro, and here he is in a match against Comando Negro for the IWRG Lightweight Championship. The match took place on January 30, 2011. This is obviously fan cam, but it was well done.

My Top 10 Lucha Feuds/Matches

The List so far.

10. L.A. ParK VS. El Dandy: Box Y Lucha 2004 Match of the Year
09. Blue Panther VS. Villano V, The Ola Lagunera and Villano Saga
08. Rey Mysterio Jr. VS. Psicosis, The World Tour
07. Villanos Vs Los Brazos, The Unmasking of a Dynasty
06. El Perro Aguayo’s Quest for Masks
05. Cien Caras VS. Rayo de Jalisco Jr. The 57th Anniversary show and the Birth of the Lucha Boom
04. El Santo VS Blue Demon: Two Generations and Still Going
03. El Santo VS Black Shadow: The Golden Age of Lucha.
02. El Hijo del Santo, Octagon Vs. Eddie Guerrero, Art Barr: When Worlds Collide
01. Atlantis VS Villano III: Mask VS Mask

Wow, I bet many could never imagine this match topping Santo/Shadow or When Worlds Collide. Well to me, when someone asks for an example of Lucha, I always go back and reference this match. It is a fantastically performed match. There was mystery revolving it, seeing as how both Atlantis and Villano III were on equal footing, status wise. Come on, did anybody really believe el Hijo del Santo and Octagon would be losing their masks to la Pareja del Terror? Well, at this point and time the end result could have gone both ways. The emotion towards this match was also insane. The crowd was divided, hell I think the Villano III chants were louder than the Atlantis ones. Not to mention there were people crying at the end. How many times do you see this in Lucha? Let alone any type of wrestling match! Those matches are few and far between. There was sportsmanship; the luchadore who lost his mask put the winner over big time with the things he said. To make a long story short, this match in my eyes is the epitome of Lucha-Libre, the sheer definition of it, and a beautiful piece of art. Now to the details, this match headlined the first ever CMLL pay per view, also it is the 2000 Wrestling Observer Match of the Year, and also, my pick for the top Lucha Match/Feud ever. Here is how it happened.

Atlantis and Villano III feuded over the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship, Atlantis had the belt, Villano III took it from him. This was slowly building to a Mask VS Mask match, and on September of 1999 many thought it had arrived. Atlantis and Villano III were paired up against Shocker and Mr. Niebla in a Relevos Increibles elimination Mask VS Mask match. Basically the team that lost would then face each other, the loser would be unmasked.

Part 2

Part 3

The feud finally culminated in 2000. CMLL held their very first pay per view event, headlining the event were Villano III and Atlantis in a now legendary Mask VS Mask match.
