Atlantis and Villano III was an unexpected choice-but not a bad one. I find myself somewhat in agreement. I’m surprised Perrito is coming back so soon, considering the scary health issues he’s had of late.

Suprising? Maybe to the casual fan, kind of like saying Steamboat and Flair had quite possibly the greatest wrestling match ever in the U.S. Not too many fans know of that match, yet they all know of Hogan and Andre. That’s the way I feel about the Villano/Atlantis and When Worlds Collide matches.

Oh yeah, I feel like El Hijo del Perro Aguayo is coming back way too soon as well. Hell, the guy had a tumor removed from his freaking stomach! How can he be back so soon? Which has incited rumors that something else was going on, like rehab for example, mind you, those are just rumors.

Were there any other licensed/advertising luchadores other than Gato Everready? Not the copyright infringing trios they’d bring out for the kids (Thundercats, Power Rangers, X-Men,etc.) but characters they had permission/were paid to us. Personally, I’d love to see all of Capcom’s Street Fighter and Saturday Night Slam Masters wrestlers brought to life.

Posted By: KGNine (Guest)

Gato Everready was more of a sponsorship that eventually ended. Afterwards he became el Gato Volador. As far as advertising or licensed luchadores, well that can be confusing. You have your soccer related luchadores, like Las Chivas, that were basically mascots for the Chivas de Guadalajara soccer team. You have Super Calo, that was given the name by Mexican musical act Calo. Of course you also have your copyright infringing Luchadores like KGNine mentioned. I’m sure the comments section would have more examples. I too would like to see some Capcom based characters, but they would be way to niche in Mexico. Funny that you mention Saturday Night Slam Masters, seeing as how The Scorpion is basically inspired by Tinieblas.

I apologize for by love of Los Gringos Locos making me forget Konnan vs Perro Aguayo was already listed. I have 3 questions however. Q1. Fortune is coming to AAA who would you like to see them face in an atomicos match Q2 Am i alone in wanting to see a feud between Drago y Billy el Malo? and Q3.Which Konnan foreign heel group is better Los Gringos Locos o La Legion Extranjera?

Posted By: laparkinator

Ah laparkinator, hope your feelings weren’t hurt! As far as your questions are concerned, I’m always happy to answer them.

1. If we are talking 3 members of Fortune going up against any three AAA luchadores they are as follows: Beer Money, AJ Styles VS Black Family, this would be an interesting concept, also AJ Styles, Daniels and Kazarian VS Extreme Tiger, Jack Evans, and Relampago or any other high flyer just so we can see one hell of an aerial show.

2. Drago VS Billy el Malo? Depends on who gets put over. Billy el Malo is a solid midcarder who has never been able to breakthrough. Will he, I don’t know, but he can definitely be a good luchadore who could help elevate Drago and possibly put in some good matches with him. For my tastes, Drago and Electroshock, or Charly Manson is also a good idea.

3. For my tastes La Legion Extranjera. Los Gringos Locos had Konnan, Barr, and Guerrero, but it also had a revolving door of guys that just watered down the concept, think original N.W.O. La Legion Extranjera is like a revolving door stable of foreign guys. We’ve seen guys like Sabu, Carlito, and Jeff Jarrett come and go. We have also seen solid guys like Silver King/Cain, Kenzo Suzuki, Teddy Hart and Jack Evans who got themselves immensely over. I prefer La Legion because it’s always changing and not a bad concept.

Only 1 lucha match makes my list for top 25 pro wrestling matches of all time. Atlantis vs. Villano III is number 1 on that list. It is my favorite pro wrestling match ever, AND I hate Villano III. But damn did he ever bring it that night! His kicks to Atlantis are the best I’ve ever seen. The dives are great, the buildup to the great finish, and the post match awesomeness make this a MUST WATCH for all wrestling fans.

I totally agree with you on this, Villano III brought it like his life was on the line. The Tope spot where they butted heads and both ended up bleeding profusely left you surprised and worried, because that could of taken any of the two out. The submissions utilized were exciting, and this match had everything, technicality, brutality and drama. The fans crying and Villano III’s father Ray Mendoza unmasking him was also an epic moment.

Yo, good column as usual Francisco. I just saw the debut of this young Mexican wrestler named Sangrieto on TNA Impact last thursday. I was impressed by this luchadore.

Who is Sangrieto? How many years has he been in Lucha Libre? What Lucha organization is he with? Is Sangrieto a part of any famous Lucha family?

Posted By: Big Lou

Oh Sangriento, well somebody beat me to the answer so here it is:

Unfortunately, Sangriento is just Amazing Red under a mask.

Posted By: I got this.

I caught an hour of AAA on Saturday (it was listed as two hours on the Dish Network program guide but a sketch-comedy show aired for the first hour) and watched CMLL yesterday, both were on Galavision.

I was wondering about a couple of things, that maybe someone can help me out with.

1.) When do new shows air for both AAA and CMLL?

2.)Do they cut the shows? Because for the 04/29/2011 Arena Mexico CMLL show, you listed a World Championship match having taken place but I didn’t see that. I only saw match 2,3, and 4. And for the AAA TV 04/30/2011 show I only saw match 2 and 5.

3.) Is there any other Lucha Libre shows that air on Dish Network?

If anyone can help me out, it would be appreciated.

Ok here is the thing, in the U.S. both AAA and CMLL shows are aired with a delay of about 2 weeks. It sucks, I know! Youtube uploads of Lucha shows are usually available before they air on U.S. tv. That and other sites like my sources is where I get my fix.

Oh god yes, they most definitely do cut shows. Sometimes horribly! I remember seeing some AAA shows that would cut to the same shot of the crowd every couple of minutes. I was really pissed when I saw the AAA Tag Titles change hands from los Maniacos to Extreme Tiger and Jack Evans, I watched the show as soon as WarriorsX2000 uploaded it, and the match was cut out to my surprise. The AAA TV had to be because they had to cut down to a 1 hour show. The show reports are of the full live card as it happened. Matches are then clipped and divided among the many CMLL shows that air in Mexico. AAA usually removes the opening matches.

Any Lucha show on Dish Network? Galavision is the only channel that airs lucha in the U.S. from what I can tell. I know IWRG aired a couple of times but then was either dropped or switched channels. I don’t remember on what channel specifically, but it was in 800 or 900 channel range, that is if you have the Latin package.

Do you know when and on what channels they show AAA or CMLL. I remmeber that AAA used to have a three hour show on Galavision then it got cut to 2 hours and then a few weeks ago I noticed it was only one. Of course now CMLL also has a Sunday show. Do yo happen to know when the shows come on Telelvisa because I can probably watch it on there as well.

Posted By: nanoman (Guest)

Televisa unfortunately only airs a Spanish dubbed version of Raw, Smackdown airs on TV Azteca. Aside from that, no lucha on Televisa, CMLL airs on various channels, I’ll just post the chart that CMLL.com has on their home page.

There you go.

I was fortunate enough to see Atlantis vs. Villano III cold, so I had no idea who was going to win. I didn’t know anything about the match, or the feud behind it, and it was fantastic.

The match has a lot in common with Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels II, both guys had been at it for so long that they were equally respected by fans, it was a match neither guy could lose, and it ended on such an emotional note.

I saw it because it was the only Lucha match to win the Observer’s MOTY award, the fact that it beat out the classics the Rock, Triple H, Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho were putting on during that time period, and the fact that CMLL’s first PPV beat out Backlash 2000, RR 2000, and Fully Loaded 2000 really is a testament to how good the match is.

Excellent post, I never thought about comparing it to Michaels and Taker but the way you put it it’s a fair comparison. Indeed the Observer nod does give it that little extra boost, When Worlds Collide might be a 5 star match, but Villano and Atlantis was a Match of the Year.

The Underworld Rises

La Parka has assembled his army to battle Los Bizarros, and now he has gone on and named his army. While La Parka has teamed with various members of el Ejercito AAA, he now relies on the Black Family members Dark Ozz, Dark Cuervo and Dark Espiritu. Joining him as well is the new member to the AAA roster Drago. La Parka has gone on to name this new stable El Inframundo, translated it means the Underworld.

La Parka did an interview with record.com.mx where he stated the following, translated by me mind you,: “El Inframundo is the kingdom of the dead, where the living dead like us reside. We are all creatures of the dead; Drago is a dead dragon that gained immortality; the Black Family is a dark trio, they are like the living dead; I represent death, according to Mexican tradition. That is why we have united, because we have a lot of in common, and the five of us also know how to be lethal in the ring.”

At least La Parka has a theme going with his group, unlike Dr. Wagner Jr. who is teaming up with the Psycho Circus, which in reality doesn’t make too much sense. Well, until Wagner himself started dressing like a clown.

La Parka had some parting words for Cibernetico: “Compadrito, take care, because I am not alone. You will not get to humiliate me like when you burned my mask, now with El Inframundo I am surrounded by great luchadores who are going to finish you. El Inframundo is going to tear you to pieces.”

Forjando Un Idolo Upset 05/06/2011

What has to be the biggest upset of the Forjando Un Idolo tournament took place on the 6th of May when the undefeated Diamante faced Fuego. Diamante up to that point had been undefeated; by now he was easily the favorite to win the tournament. Fuego put a stop to those plans when he made Diamante submit.

Dr. X Rudo Shenanigans Continue 05/10/2011

The Fuego and Dr. X matches continue to end with Dr. X showing just how much of a Rudo he truly is. Fuego teamed up with Rey Cometa and Diamante to face off against the Rudo team of Virus, Hooligan and Dr. X. The Technico team took the first fall and the Rudos took the second. The third fall was taken by the Technicos, via DQ that is, after Dr. X low blowed Fuego. The hate continues, and hopefully it ends in a proper 1 on 1 match.

Photo:cmll.com

Not to be outdone by Dr. X, Atlantis continued the hits below the belt. He main evented the card joined by Mr. Niebla and Hector Garza. Their opponents on that night were Strong Man, Blue Panther and Black Warrior. Both sides were evened out with 1 fall each and at the third Atlantis low blowed Blue Panther, unlike with Dr. X, the ref didn’t catch this and the Rudos took the victory. Good for Atlantis, showing Dr. X how a lucha veteran does it!

IWRG: Villanos turn on Piratas 05/12/2011

Negro Navarro joined up with his son Trauma I and Multifacetico to face Villano IV, Ray Mendoza Jr. and el Hijo del Pirata Morgan. It seemed like the Villanos and Pirata Morgan along with his kin had joined forces and were strongly united. Well if that was the case it ended here! The Rudos lost the match after el Hijo del Pirata Morgan was pinned. The Villanos turned on him and attacked him. There was no aid for the son of el Pirata Morgan, but the Navarro family did issue a challenge to the Villanos.

Lucha Poster of the Week

Lucha Video Break

This week we go back to AAA. Of course thanks goes out to WarriorsX2000 for uploading the full AAA show from 05/01/2011. This would be the show with Drago debuting and Dr. Wagner Jr. donning an outfit that’s part Psycho Circus. Drago’s debut was actually cut out, although he is part of the ending, I missed the previous show and all signs point to that being where the debut aired. Anyways, enjoy.
