La Voz/The Voice

Hi Man.

Good call on Mil. Always felt he’s very good in ring, and looked like a star. I have heard stories about him being egoistical aka backstage politics. I think it’s true since from what i’ve seen, he seems reluctant to sell for opponents. He even eliminated himself from rumble 1997. Was he a rudo in Mexico?

I think Santo is the biggest star in Mexico. Of course i don’t much knowledge in Lucha as you do, but from what i’ve read (like wiki, where they say he’s the Hulk Hogan of Mexico) and hearing from my friends from the ‘south’, he’s the one who made luchadores famous. His mainstream appeal was huge with movies and feud with blue demon. was he an influence in backstage politics as well? i always hear he and Demon had legit heat between them.

Also, since Rey doesn’t lose often and we hear stories about del rio being a backstage politician and Sin Cara thinking high about himself (all came from various reports, not my opinion or facts). What do you think about luchadores and politics?

Posted By: Rama Narayanan

I haven’t found any information to confirm if Mil has ever been a Rudo, I don’t believe so but I’m not 100% sure. As far as politics, well let’s just say Billy Graham and Mick Foley aren’t the only people who have complained about him.

Hulk Hogan of Mexico is putting it right! He was the biggest star in Mexico, bar none. As far as legit heat, it’s been a popular theory that the two did not like each other. Mil Mascaras has stated that they would constantly be fighting on movie sets, whether it was physical or verbal is uncertain. So in essence, I feel comfortable enough to say that indeed El Santo and Blue Demon did not like each other.

Now as far as backstage politics are concerned, yes. Here is the thing though, it goes with your other question, once luchadores get to the top they stick their hands in the political workings as well. There are stories of money holdups, stealing from guys that are lower on the cards, stopping certain guys from getting pushed, as well as guys flat out refusing to lose or sell. If you are a fan of Shoot Interviews, I highly recommend checking out any of the Rey Misterio Jr. and Konnan shoots, there is one of Rey Sr. as well on Youtube, but that one’s in Spanish only. It’ll boggle your mind when you hear some of their stories regarding politics.

Always enjoy your column man, believe it or not, i live in Mexico, but with the constant changes in times they air each promotion i have an easier time following WWE than either CMLL or AAA

Big question…how can i see Triplemania?? i have NEVER been able to catch it. If i dont have SKY, what are my options?

Posted By: Megadeth

Wow, really a reader from Mexico? Hell yeah, Televisa is constantly changing, delaying or in some way, shape or form messing with the lucha airings! Hopefully they start slowing it down, and it is so true, the WWE shows have no issues with Televisa making changes. As far as Triplemania is concerned, hell if you don’t have SKY, there really isn’t any alternatives. Legal alternatives that is, as far as viewing it illegally? Comments section, any ideas?

I am a big fan of the column, keep up the good work. Especially love learning about one of my old favorites, the ‘chairman’ of WCW, La Parka. I was a big fan of the luchas back then, but La Parka was always the best, even got him to give me a thumbs up at a house show.

For lists, here are a few potential ideas:
Best female luchas
Best mask
Best mini
Best mini

Thanks for the support, ever since I started writing this thing up, I have to say that I’m surprised at how many L.A. ParK fans have popped up! It’s good to know many have a fond memory of the guy. All I have to say is if you’re only exposure was his WCW run then damn, you’ve only seen a glimpse of the mans greatness!
Good list ideas, I’m going to be honest, female lucha is definitely my weak point, I’ll see what I can do! Minis and Masks should be coming up on a future date.

Great read as always man. I had no clue Takaiwa was working as Black Tiger V, I was wondering where the hell he’s been for the last few years, he was one of the best juniors in Japan at one point.

Do you think the TNA guys are going to help or hurt Triplemania this year?

Posted By: Colin Rinehart

TNA guys help or hurt Triplemania? I’m in between at this point, the buildup has been minimal, although the Jarrett promos that have aired have been interesting. All I can say is it makes for an interesting card, will it hurt AAA in any way? That depends on the outcome, I’m for Jarrett winning the title from Zorro, seeing as this can lead to the Zorro TNA jump. If Anderson and Abyss become tag champs, yeah that won’t be as much fun!

Best column on 411 since Column Of Honor. Please keep up the good work.

Which American wrestlers would you like to make appearances in Lucha Libre? Doubt you would choose Abyss or Jarrett…..

Thanks again for the column. La Parka is the man.

Posted By: OFWGKTA aka Odd Future

Wow, I’d bet there is people that would argue with you over that, but thanks for the kind words.
As far as U.S. stars in Lucha, I’d like to see any guy that can work the style. A.J. Styles, Christopher Daniels already tore it up on a past occasion, C.M. Punk, Evan Bourne would be incredible. Those are just a few names. I’m actually for Jarrett having a brief run, but if it’s just the occasional tour than it’s more of a “Meh” for me.

Another La Parka fan!

Realy enjoyed the column Francisco although I’m not an avid watcher of Lucha I did dabble back when it was shown on The Wrestling Channel here in the UK.

My main problem with it at the time was the commentary obviously it was Mexican which stands to reason. Say what you want about the WWE style but you could walk in off the street and after 3 mins of the match you know the background. I think it would be great for an English speaking commentator(s) to perform alternative commentary on the match and would probably get me more involved in the match. This was also my biggest stumbling block with Japansese wrestling. I’m probably coming across as a typical one language dick here “speak English or don’t speak at all!”

Posted By: Guest#8303

Ok, now that’s a fair argument. Obviously if you don’t understand the language, there is a big stumbling block with watching lucha or puro. I can sit back and watch any puro match without minding the commentary, puro is all about the match anyways. Well at least that’s my thought. Lucha is similar, but yes, especially in AAA, if you aren’t’ aware of the storyline it might be a little more confusing. Now, why don’t they go out and just get someone to do an English dubbed show? Resources! That, and Lucha is way too niche to have it translated to English or any other language. As opposed to the WWE, who can afford to have translations and export their TV product to any country in need of a T.V show. Now let’s play Devils Advocate, and say CMLL or AAA do get their shows translated, what channel will carry it? Obviously, Lucha Libre USA was the experiment to see if Lucha Libre, in English, would work, and we all know how that went.

Mind you, what I think would be a good idea would be for someone, whether it be AAA, CMLL or just a bored fan to pick up the shows, add subtitles or dub it themselves and add it to Youtube. Not a high cost, not too much work, and you make it available worldwide!

Completely agree with your top-10 list, and it’s obvious that Mil should be #1 on it. I liked the assessment from Tiger Mask I that, if it wasn’t for “Mascaras there would be no Ultimo Dragon, Jushin Liger or Great Sasuke.” Because it’s very true, seeing as to how Mascaras was the god father of masked wrestlers who fought for honor and dignity, not for money and fame. Though he DID get it all anyway.

Question: so I was reading one user’s comments about TNA and it seems like, though they SEND people to AAA (for TripleMania) Promotions in Mexico don’t have lots of Lucha Libres in TNA, sans when the X-Cup was in vogue. Why do you think that is? Is it because of Bischoff and his attitude towards cruiser-weights/Lucha Libre wrestlers?

Posted By: RJ (Guest)

Well to be fair, Mil did start off that way but then did develop an ego. Just calling it like I see it!

As far as the TNA issue, it’s like this, TNA has had great luchadores, Hector Garza, who was receiving a great push and messed it up, Volador Jr., who for some stupid reason wasn’t put in X-Division matches, but instead was put in a tag-team and stable. They have also had ok to good luchadores, Shocker and el Mesias. The World X-Cup has always showcased great talent, hell Abismo Negro was part of it one year! Aside from the occasional luchadore and X-Cup participation, TNA doesn’t do lucha, their answer to Sin Cara/Mistico has been Sangriento/Amazing Red, this when TNA has a working relationship with AAA. I don’t blame Eric Bischoff; he did do a good job showcasing the cruiserweights as we all know, although he did mess that up as well when he unmasked many of them. I blame Vince Russo! He once in an interview did state his preference for American talent, and his dislike of foreign talent. A part of this interview can be read in the book “The Death of WCW” in pages 214 and 215. It goes a little like this:

“I’m going to tell you something right now that you will absolutely not agree with, but I’ve been a wrestling fan my whole life and I will live and die by this. It’s hard enough, believe me, I write this shit, it is hard enough to get somebody over. You will never, ever, ever, ever, ever see the Japanese wrestlers or the Mexican wrestlers over in American mainstream wrestling, and the simple reason for that is, even myself, I’m an American and I don’t want to sound like a big bigot or a racist or anything like that, but I’m an American. If I’m watching wrestling here in America, I don’t give a shit about a Japanese guy, I don’t give a shit about a Mexican guy. I’m from America, and that’s what I want to see.”

This being when he was in WCW. I can understand that point of view, but to be fair, international talent, whether it be luchadores or Japanese wrestlers would be a great aid in bringing the X-Division back to prominence. Maybe Russo never heard of Rey Misterio Jr., let alone Eddie Guerrero.

Entertaining and informative column as always. I read it weekly with great interest, it’s the only regular exposure I get to lucha libre. One request/suggestion, would it be possible to caption the photos? In many cases, I have no idea who the guys are in the photos, particularly when the pic is accompanying a description of a trios match or something along those lines. Being able to put faces to the names of these guys would be great. Keep up the great work!

Posted By: Olds Cool

Captions on the photos, you got it.

What’s your view of Angel de Oro winning the tournament?

Personally, in the one match I saw of his, he looked pretty good, and they paired him with Ultimo Guerrero, so you know they have some faith in him. Plus, at the very least, I think he has a great mask.

The one thing that I wondered is why was Angel de Oro, a technico, paired with a rudo, Ultimo Guerrero. Is Ultimo Guerrero at this point a rudo in name only?

Posted By: *Asterisk

CMLL obviously is high on Angel de Oro, he won the Reyes del Aire tournament, unmasked Fabian el Gitano and is now part of the Mexican National Trios Tournament. Without a doubt expect big things from Angel de Oro, possibly even Tag-Team gold of some sort with his brother Angel de Plata.

More than likely what you saw would be a Relevos Increibles, translated Incredible Pairs, match, which on occasion does occur, this being a match where a Rudo and Technico are paired together as a team.

I do not understand the fascination with Lucha Libres wrestlers. I do not see America wanting to embrace this style: It’s too flashy without any real hard hitting impact.

I also do not see how Amercian wrestlin fans can embrace the luchadores when there is a language barrier that limits the Luchadores from connecting with the American crowds.

Guys like Mexicool, Hector Garza, Super Crazy and Shocker all failed in America.

Posted By: Rinehart X

Hmmm, sounds like that Vince Russo interview. Sorry to have to break it to you, but America not only has embraced this style, they’ve also integrated it! What did you think Evan Bourne came up with his moveset all on his lonesome, or AJ Styles, Paul London, Kendrick, Amazing Red, Justin Gabriel, and the list goes on!? Language barriers can make it difficult, but come on, are you honestly going to say that there aren’t any English only speaking Sin Cara fans now?

Now let’s take a look at your list, Mexicools, Juvi and Psicosis were over, both Cruiserweight Champions, Hector Garza, was being pushed, heavily by TNA, he dropped the ball, also might I add, he was extremely over. Super Crazy, really, did you not see any of his ECW matches, the freaking crowd learned to count to ten in Spanish out of respect for the guy! Shocker, yeah, I’m not defending that one. Sure, these guys did not become world champions, but then again how many guys do? Garza might have been the exception, unfortunately we all know the story of what happened. Just because these guys did not break through to the main event seen and stayed in the midcards doesn’t mean they failed. They can’t all be Rey Mysterio or Eddie Guerrero!

Quite possibly another troll has been fed.

I am sorry to say this but Art Barr is not a hall of famer. Franciso, can you tell me why Barr deserves a HOF bid?

Posted By: Thor (Guest)

My initial reasoning was so we can have La Pareja del Terror in the HOF since Eddie is already in. Barr did achieve success on his own, he had two high profile matches with Blue Panther, and was also extremely popular. Was he as over as the rest of the list, that’s debatable, but if Koko B. Ware can be in the HOF there is no reason Art Barr couldn’t be in it as well.

No Goya Kong pics?

Posted By: thepsychedelia

Goya Kong? Yeah, female lucha is my weakness! Although, it is ironic you posted this comment, scroll down and see.

The only one of these guys who will make it into the WWE Hall of Fame, assuming that Alberto Del Rio’s push isn’t already completely fucked up,* are Dos Caras and Mil Mascaras.

Both guys deserve to be in any pro wrestling Hall of Fame, as does every guy you listed. But the WWE HOF is all about connections anyway.

The Hall of Fame to really take seriously is the Observer Hall of Fame. Sure, there are a few glaring ommissions that should be inducted immediately (Kensuke Sasaki, Jun Akiyama, The Steiner Brothers, Atlantis, Sting, and Akira Taue should all have been inducted at least two years ago), but everyone in the Observer Hall of Fame is someone who deserves their place.

Which luchadors do you think to be in the Observer Hall of Fame? The only ones who aren’t in now who I’d put in are Atlantis and Ultimo Guerrero. But you’re probably much more knowledgeable about that than myself.

*Of which there’s a good chance it is.

Posted By: Quick Quote

Yeah, Del Rio’s push being stalled deeply saddens me, but if rumors are true he might be main eventing Summerslam.

As far as the Observer HOF pics, sounds like a good idea for a list.

just thought i would post my weekly post. Why are Los Bizarros full on rudos now? do you know? and is Charly Manson not gonna be a Bizarro anymore?

Posted By: laparkinator

Alright, If I’m not mistaken Laparkinator has commented on here weekly since the first time this column was uploaded. Now as far is your question is concerned, it’s quite simple really, Los Bizarros are attacking La Parka, one of AAA’s top Technico’s. So it makes perfect sense they would be billed and recieved as Rudos. Charly Manson has returned and he is still a Bizarro.

Now to the news!

The Road to Triplemania 05/26/2011

June is closing in on us, and AAA is readying their biggest show of the year. A few notes about the show, the AAA Trios Tournament in nearing it’s finale. According to reports, Triplemania will host a 4-way Trios match to crown the AAA Trios Champions. Eliminations are still under way. A Perros del Mal team consisting of Damian 666, Halloween and X-Fly have advanced, defeating a Fuerza Aeria team of Aerostar, Argenis and Laredo Kid. Another team to have advanced was a team of Bizarros. The participants were Billy el Malo, Charly Manson and Cibernetico. Their opponents consisted of Team IWRG, Cerebro Negro, Dr. Cerebro and Eterno. I had high hopes for this team to advance, but it wasn’t so. For now it seems like this Trios Championship match will feature the Bizarros, Dark Family, Perros del Mal and the Psycho Circus.

Main event of the card was a brutal battle between Dr. Wagner Jr. and El Mesias who went up against L.A. ParK and a returning Hijo del Perro Aguayo. Originally Zorro was supposed to be in this but el Hijo del Perro Aguayo took his place. The match ended in a no contest when el Perro Jr. and Dr. Wagner Jr. went through a table, and el Mesias and ParK knocked each other out in the middle of the ring Rocky style.

Rayos Tapatios continue the hate 05/22/2011

What has to arguably be the best Rudo tag team of the moment, Rayo Tapatio I and II continue their feud with Guerrero Maya Jr. and other Technico’s Los Rayos Tapatios were joined by Puma King, their opponents were Guerrero Maya Jr., Hombre Bala Jr. and Super Halcon Jr. The deciding fall ended when Guerrero Maya Jr. fouled one of the Rayos. Guerrero Maya’s reaction was to take Rayo’s mask, the ref caught the low blow, and DQ’d the Rudo team.

Now that’s a Main Event! 05/22/2011

CMLL held a card on May 22nd that would have been worthy of a pay per view event. Ultimo Guerrero defended the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship against a worthy opponent La Sombra. La Generacion Dorada had been on a roll and if Sombra won the title it would have been their biggest achievement to date. Unfortunately for him, Ultimo Guerrero came out on top after the 3rd fall. By Luchawiki’s count, that would be the 16th time Ultimo Guerrero defends the title.

Another Freaking Tournament! 05/24/2011

Since Mascara Dorada vacated the CMLL World Lightweight Championship, a new champion is needed, which means another tournament. Thankfully this is going to be a quick one with two Torneo Cibernetico’s to choose the finalist’s. Guerrero Maya Jr. overcame the odds, going over seven other luchadores. In the end Palacio Negro was left, and was defeated when Maya Jr. used a maneuver that screams Martinete. The ref allowed it, and we have our first finalist.

Forjando un Idolo final, and Goya Kong Injured 05/27/2011

It’s funny, someone asks for Goya Kong pictures and the next week she’s out with an injury! Goya Kong teamed with Dark Angel and Marcela. Their opponents on this night were Princess Sugheit, Amapola, and Estrellita. Goya Kong was stretchered out and taken to the hospital after her team was victorious. Apparently Goya Kong was on the receiving end of a Tope con Giro, that resulted with her injuring her ankle.

Angel de Oro soars onto Polvora

Angel de Oro and Polvora faced off in the Forjando Un Idolo finale, and all reports state this match did not disappoint. Polvora put in a career defining performance, to the point that the crowd turned on Angel de Oro and cheered the Rudo Polvora. The crowd support wasn’t enough though, with Angel de Oro taking the win.

Averno chews through la Mascara’s mask
Photo:cmll.com

La Lista/The List

My Favorite Luchadore Nicknames

HM: Anibal “La Saeta Azul” Translated “The Blue Arrow”
HM: Fishman “El Veneno Verde” Translated “The Green Poison”
HM: Dr. Wagner Jr. “El Galeno Del Mal” Translated “The Evil Galen/Physician”

10.Ultimo Guerrero “Luchadore De Otro Nivel” Translated “Wrestler On Another Level”
This one is simple enough and doesn’t require much explanation. Ultimo Guerrero is supposed to be the Samuel L. Jackson of Lucha, you know one “Bad Mother F****R”, so it would make sense to bill him as being on another level.

9. Abismo Negro “El Rey del Martinete” Translated “The King of the Martinete/Tombstone”
For those still not in the know el Martinete aka the Tombstone is illegal in lucha. So for the late Abismo Negro to be known as the king of an illegal maneuver makes him one evil rudo.

8. Scorpio “Rey Feo” Translated “King Ugly”
This one is just comical, the former UWA World Heavyweight Champion was billed as “el Rey Feo”, his son Scorpio Jr. twisted it a bit when he took the nickname “el Guapo” translated “the Handsome One”.

7. Tinieblas “El Gigante Sabio” Translated “The Wise Giant”
This nickname just went extremely well with the character. Standing at 6″3, Tinieblas was pretty tall for a Luchadore, not just that, the man is actually extremely intelligent, the Wise Giant nickname being pretty accurate then.

6. Blue Demon “Manotas” Translated “Paws or Big Hands”
The man had big hands, enough said!

5. Cibernetico “El Devorador de Pecados” Translated “The Sin Eater”
The Sin Eater, it just sounds badass! Even more so in Spanish, I prefer this nickname more than his Main Man nickname.

4. Mil Mascaras “Mr. Personalidad” Translated “Mr. Personality”
Mil Mascaras, means a thousand masks, and by the look of it each with its own personality.

3. Mascara Año 2000 “El Padre de Mas de 20” Translated “The Father of More than 20”
Ok, now we are getting to the realm of the weird and comical! Mascara Año 2000, the father of more than 20! Is it true, I don’t know, but it is one hell of a thing to brag about!

2. Misterioso “El Rey del Yoghurt” Translation “The Yogurt King
From the realm of the weird and comical we go to a nickname that is just bats**t insane! Announcer Leobardo Magadan has been billed as the person to nickname Misterioso the Yogurt King. Why is he the Yogurt King? Well, there are many theories, the one that makes the most sense is that prior to being a luchadore Misterioso worked at a yogurt factory. Yes, if you didn’t catch that it’s yogurt as in the dairy product.

1. Sangre Chicana “El Pocho Maldito” Translated “The Evil Pocho”
My personal favorite nickname for a luchadore, now this will require some explanation. Sangre Chicana translated means Chicano Blood. A Chicano is an American with Mexican descent, in other words not a Mexican. In Mexico there is a term for Mexican-Americans that completely abandon Mexican tradition and culture, Pocho. Pocho is usually used in a negative way, seeing as someone who forgets or abandons his or her roots is frowned upon by a country that is huge on tradition and culture. So long story short, The Evil Pocho, and I’ll be damned if Sangre Chicana didn’t live up to that name!

Ke Monito Signing Off!
FR: So Ke Monito, now that I look at this weeks list it got me thinking, do you have a nickname?
Ke Monito: Of course I do, “Your Mothers Favorite Mini”
FR: you bastard, I’d figure you’d give me something like that!
Ke Monito: No really, that’s my nickname!
