Sorry, Goya Kong! I hope I didn’t jinx you with that pic request. 🙁

Seriously huh! How about that for a coincidence?

Leobardo Magadán, Francisco. It’s Leobardo. Great list, tough.

Yeah, my bad I don’t know huh I messed that up but I did!

If the lucha companies in Mexico want to expand their popularity, one of the things they could do is a few talent exchanges with ROH, Chikara, or PWG. I know that AAA has a talent exchange deal with TNA, hence the invasion, but TNA never gives the AAA guys any exposure on their shows, and even if they did, TNA has such terrible booking that it wouldn’t matter anyway.

Good exposure around the world is what creates a true superstar, lots of people in the US and Japan still remember who Mil Mascaras is because of his extensive international touring.

It’s a pity there isn’t a steady promotion in Texas anymore, that could potentially lead to a great crossover deal with lucha promotions.

I’m not 100% percent sold on talent exchanges with the indys. If the lucha talent isn’t getting exposure in TNA, I doubt they would get it in the indys as well. Now indy talent has gone to Mexico and gotten over, look at Jack Evans. Luchadores getting over in the U.S. is a harder sell though. ROH has had the occasional lucha appearance when they go to states with a high Hispanic population. How successful those appearances were can be debated. Let’s not forget they had Blue Demon Jr. make a couple of appearances, but in my mind he didn’t exactly sell a lot of tickets. I don’t know if he did attract fans that weren’t familiar with the ROH product, I could be wrong though.

I am 100% percent with you on international exposure though. They sure as hell don’t make them like they used to. Jericho, Guerrero, Dos Caras, Mil Mascaras, all these guys toured the U.S., Mexico, and Japan. Learning completely different styles and gaining an immense amount of experience along the way. In Mexico they say that these guys were “Hechos en el fuego” translated it means forged by fire, which is a damn good way of explaining it.

Well there might not be any steady promotions, but depending on what area of Texas you live in you do get the occasional lucha card with some big name talent.

The thing about Mil Mascaras ego is that he legitimately is one of the most talented guys in wrestling history from every single aspect of the business. He was charismatic, he sold tickets, movies, merchandise, anything that can be sold, he was easily one of the five best wrestlers in the world in the 70’s, and still a great worker even afterwords. Of course he’d feel entitled.

It’s just a shame Mascaras has to act so childish, he’s not as bad as Hijo del Santo, Hogan, or even Matt Hardy, but he’s still a jerk.

Indeed, I will never knock Mil Mascaras for his impact, in ring talent, or simply being a draw. Yes he has achieved way more than most wish they could. He might be entitled to it, but the ego just makes him look like a bitter old man.

I have come to say my streak will probably end next week. And give 3 of my favorite luchador nicknames. Psicosis-El Millonario de Tijuana-ECW Rey Misterio Jr-El Technico Nino de Tijuana-ECW and La Parka-The Chairman of WCW

Posted By: laparkinator

Wow, it’s sad to hear that. If anyone has had perfect attendance in would be la Parkinator. Now as far as your pics for nicknames, all good ones, except for the La Parka one, I’ve always preferred “La Calaca” than the chairman nickname. My opinion though!

Averno jumps ship

Obviously the biggest news of the week happens to be Averno leaving CMLL for the greener pastures at Connecticut. Rumors have run rampant and the story has changed an impressive amount of times. Here is what we currently know. The story broke on Sunday May, 29 through various outlets, from Superluchas magazine to the cubsfan blog. Reports and rumors state that WWE staff went up to Sin Cara and asked if he could pick any person to work with who could it be. Sin Cara chose Averno. Averno signed with the WWE and rumors state he did not inform CMLL. He asked to drop his mask as soon as possible and an agreement was made. The popular choice would have been to have Averno loose to Mascara Dorada, but due to commitments with Japan that was not possible. They opted to have Averno drop the mask against La Mascara. Supposedly Averno had even stated to CMLL that if they couldn’t work anything out that he would just drop it at an independent show.

CMLL went into damage control, and Averno also was a part of it. On May 30, 2011 record.com.mx had an article that featured an interview with Averno. Averno denied that he was going to be heading to the WWE and stated that he would be proving this by defeating La Mascara and taking his mask. Averno went as far as to state that he never had any tryouts with the WWE, stating that there had been communication between the two, but that was it.

As of now it is a wait and see situation. Something extremely similar occurred when Superluchas broke the Mistico signing to the WWE story, except for everything being a bit more chaotic during those times. It’s interesting to see that Averno has denied the signing, but at the same time it seems futile, seeing as how Averno’s own father has confirmed the signing.

Rayos Tapatios mask challenges 05/29/2011

The issues between Guerrero Maya Jr. and Los Rayos Tapatios keep on escalating. This time Maya Jr. was accompanied by Hombre Bala Jr. and Super Halcon Jr. The hatred between both parties reached a boiling point, this time Los Rayos Tapatios were joined by Hooligan. The Rudo group gave Guerrero Maya Jr. a beating, it got to the point that they actually tore apart Guerrero Maya’s ring gear. The Rudos took the victory in this match and they issued challenges to Guerrero Maya Jr. and Hombre Bala Jr. for a Mask Vs Mask match.

El Hijo del Santo is pissed off!

Well el Hijo del Santo is notably upset this week. He has held the WWA Welterweight title for some time now, he stated he was due to defend the title against Angel Blanco Jr. in about a month and guess what happens? Well apparently the WWA held a tournament to crown the new WWA Welterweight Champion, basically stripping el Hijo del Santo of the title. El Hijo de Rey Misterio was crowned the new champion and el Hijo del Santo vented on his Record article.

Perros del Mal 3rd Anniversary 05/29/2011

The Perros del Mal promotion celebrated its 3rd Anniversary as a promotion, to celebrate Los Perros put up quite a stacked card. The Main Event was the culmination of the Psycho Circus and Los Perros del Mal feud. At least that is what I’m hoping for. Los Perros and the Psycho Circus were placed in a cage, the match was elimination based, he who got out of the cage was safe, and the last person left in the cage would lose either his mask or hair. In the end the last two in the cage were Super Crazy and Psycho Clown, Psycho Clown put Super Crazy through a table and escaped, leaving Super Crazy to be shaved bald in the middle of the ring.

Lucha Poster of the Week

El Pasado/ The Past

Yeah, no list this week, the last couple of requests were for minis, females, and WON Hall of Fame, the WON list I’m working on and if I did minis and females it would only be about five picks long. So in that case this week we take a special look at Averno.

Averno

Averno actually debuted under the name Rencor Latino, he was a midcarder for most of the time. Being a technico and other times being a rudo. His transformation into Averno came at the hands of el Satanico, during the time when he was feuding with Rey Bucanero and Ultimo Guerrero for the Infernales name. Bucanero and Guerrero had turned on el Satanico and el Satanico found a set of luchadores to join him in the war for the Los Infernales name.

Rencor Latino becomes Averno

Averno floundered in the upper card but finally broke through to the Main Event when he faced el Hijo del Santo for the WWA Welterweight Championship on October 2004.

Part 1

Part 2

Averno has held a various amount of titles. He has been a CMLL Tag Team champion alongside Mephisto, Mexican National Trios Champion alongside Mephisto and el Satanico, NWA World Middleweight Champion, CMLL World Middleweight Champion, and also a member of Team Mexico when they won the TNA 2008 World X Cup.

Averno Vs Alex Kozlov for the CMLL World Middleweight Title, November 2006

Part 1

Part 2

Averno has always been known as one of Mistico’s best opponents. They have face each other numerous times wether it be singles or in tag matches. Allegedly their biggest match together occurred on January 1st 2005 when Mistico defeated Averno for the NWA Middleweight Championship. Apparently the match was either not taped, or CMLL has not released video of the match. According to the people that witnessed the match though, it was a classic. Averno also had a hand in the Mistico Rudo turn, when he teamed with Mistico during the Torneo Nacional de Parejas Increibles on January 22 2010, they both came out with matching ring gear, and Mistico also donned a Rudo attitude.

It has been said that Mistico and Averno are real life friends and this is one big reason why Averno signed to the WWE. Will Averno just be Sin Cara’s personal jobber or will he be able to breakthrough and perhaps even steal the spotlight from Sin Cara? It will be interesting to see and I truthfully hope the best for Averno since he is extremely talented. We leave you with the Averno Top Ten.
