411’s Wrestler of the Week 06.13.11: Year Seven, Week 11
Posted by Larry Csonka on 06.13.2011
Mr. Anderson won the TNA World Title, Kota Ibushi won the Super Juniors tournament, Kurt Angle beat Jeff Jarrett and more! Check out 411's Wrestler of the Week for all the details and for an updated look at the Year-End standings!
Welcome to Week 11, Year SEVEN, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…
Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…
Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…
1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1
...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year around WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…
Larry Csonka
1) Mr. Anderson
Defeated Sting to become the TNA World Champion for the second time. Hopefully the second run goes better than the first run for Anderson.
2) Kurt Angle: Had another good match with Jeff Jarrett, but this time he ended the feud (supposedly) and earned a title shot against new champion Mr. Anderson.
3) Bully Ray & AJ Styles: Had the best match of the night at Slammiversary. AJ Styles continues to be an amazing performer, while Bully Ray is quickly becoming one of the best heels in wrestling.
4) Kota Ibushi
5) Andy Leavine
Wes Kirk
1) Mr. Anderson
With a little cheap shot and two Mic Checks, Mr. Anderson took home his second TNA Championship at Slammiversary against Sting. This makes him a two-time heavyweight champion and shows that the company has faith in him as their new top heel. Anderson has been on a roll and he is definitely showing that star power people mentioned him having but never had a chance to truly show it elsewhere.
2) Kurt Angle: Angle is not only heading into the 2012 Olympics to attempt a SECOND gold medal at the current age of 42, but he has become the #1 contender to the TNA Championship after a grueling bout against Jeff Jarrett. Angle has been defying the critics and performing in stellar matches for years despite numerous injuries and criticisms of substance abuse, and looks to be continuing on with his success with a guaranteed title shot against the new champion.
3) Sheamus: With a victory over Randy Orton in a NO DQ Match on SmackDown, Sheamus has defeated the world heavyweight champion and that always counts as a big plus on the resume. Although he didn't take home the gold, Sheamus obviously has a chance now to get a title shot and possibly three-peat as world champion very soon.
4) Kota Ibushi
5) R-Truth
Michael Ornelas
1) Ken Anderson
Won the TNA World Championship.
2) Kota Ibushi: Best of the Super Juniors XVIII winner.
3) Sheamus: Beat the World Heavyweight Champion.
4) Bully Ray
5) Andy Levine
Ryan Byers
1) Kota Ibushi
New Japan Pro Wrestling has been running its eighteenth annual Best of the Super Juniors tournament for the past month or so, and, this week, Kota Ibushi emerged victorious. This is particularly impressive because Ibushi is not a full-time member of the NJPW roster and he instead wrestles for a much smaller indy company called DDT. This was also a bit of redemption for Ibushi, as he went to the finals of last year's tournament but lost out to eventual winner Prince Fergal Devitt. The tournament victory almost certainly guarantees Ibushi a title match against the reigning IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion who, coincidentally, just happens to be the aforementioned Prince Devitt.
2) Andy Leavine: I probably would have put Big Andy at number one this week for winning Tough Enough, if not for the fact that he was made to look like a complete goofball immediately after his victory, taking a bump off of an open hand slap from a sixty-five year old grandfather. In any event, Leavine will now presumably make a debut on the main WWE roster relatively soon, and, when he does, he has a major advantage in terms of getting over in that he's got significantly more TV exposure than just about any other WWE rookie does coming in. We'll see if that translates to anything or if he's just made into another face in the crowd.
3) Sheamus: I'm a bit tired of the Sheamus/Randy Orton pairing because they did the feud to death last year and went back to it way too soon, but the two did manage to put on a solid match this week with Sheamus getting the win over the reigning World Heavyweight Champion.
4) Rey Misterio, Jr.
5) Go Shiozaki
Michael Bauer
1) Kota Ibushi
Now, winning the 18th Best of the Super Juniors tournament may not seem big. However, for a non-full timer in New Japan to win the tournament is a pretty big deal. It's a huge boost for Ibushi and probably gives us a chance at another great match with him Devitt.
2) Kurt Angle: I'm giving Angle the nod, because he delivered like he always does and finally ended his feud with a win.
3) Mr. Anderson: Yeah, he won the title again, but Anderson as a top heel doesn't excite me.
4) Bully Ray / AJ Styles
5) Crimson
Jeremy Thomas
1) Mr. Anderson
The first time he won the title, Mr. Anderson was being given it so that it could be taken away from the man on trial for trafficking more drugs than a pharmacy carries. And then they swept the rug out from under him by giving it right back to the guy. This time, he's beating one of the top faces in the company for the belt and it's less of a panic button. I like Ken and I'm interested to see where they go from here with him.
2) Kurt Angle: Angle finally ended his feud with Jeff Jarrett and did so by becoming the #1 contender to the World Title at Slammiversary. An Angle/Anderson feud should be fun.
3) Sheamus: Had the TV match of the week with Randy Orton on Smackdown—and won it, to boot.
4) Bully Ray/AJ Styles
5) Kota Ibushi
J.D. Dunn
1) Kota Ibushi
This is a tough one since a world title changed hands, but when I think about the impact to a career, this win will likely have far more impact on Ibushi's career than Anderson's title win will help Anderson.
2) Mr. Anderson: Won the TNA title and cemented himself as the top heel in the company. But does that really mean much in a company that doesn't care about titles and doesn't seem to know what heels and faces are?
3) Kurt Angle: Became the #1 contender for the title by beating long-time rival Jeff Jarrett.
4. R-Truth
5. AJ Styles/Bully Ray

yup everyone downplaying tna.TNA is the second biggest wrestling company in the world. Its on mainstream tv in alot of part of the world.the only company thats bigger is wwe.plus you bring up a valdi point.tna mis-uses tittle.you discredit them for doing it but not wwe make you a hypocrite.over than last 5 years or so the IC tittle has alomst meant nothing, the tag tittle even less.its like the only tittle people even care about now is their heavywieght tittle.before the ic was actually an accomplishment something to be proud of.jerichos main goal was to hold that tittle.I get it though.everyone is just all over wwe nuts they can't say anything negative about them.wwe is just as bad as tna going by quality of shows.smackdown has been on a roll lately though.but what makes wwe worse is how they treat people.what they did to christian was horrible.how they treat zackryder,cm punk, daniel bryan is horrible.411 writers are just hypocrites.

Sorry to disappoint you buddy. Number two in America, but struggling to be top 10 in the world. Off the top of my head, WWE, All Japan, New Japan, NOAH, Dragon Gate, CMLL and AAA are all bigger than TNA in pretty much every regard.

Dear "?", you need to get out of your little sad corner of the world. TNA might be the second in USA and only a very, very distant second, but wouldn't even be in the top ten "in the world". In Japan alone there's easily 5 wrestling companies that are bigger than the sad little bush league TNA.

I hate when people list all these promotions they claim are bigger than TNA. How many people outside of Japan watch All Japan/New Japan etc? Hell, are they even on tv internationally? TNA is watched by millions of people AROUND THE WORLD. That makes them bigger than a promotion that isnt watched outside its home country.

How many people watch TNA outside of the USA/UK? TNA claims they are aired in most of the world, what they dont tell you however is that in most countries they are behind decoders on minor stations nobody watches. Even in TNA's 4th biggest market (australia), they only have 10000 viewers. So that makes 1.5million viewers in the USA, 200000 in the UK, and about 50000 in the rest of the world. Thats about 2million worldwide.
NJPW, Dragongate, NOAH and AJPW might not be broadcasted in as many countries as TNA, but in their own country they have 3+ million viewers. Add to that a few big asian markets like Hongkong, Taiwan, South Korea (a rapidly growing market for wrestling) and you might get to 4 million viewers worldwide.

Okay anyone arguing that NOAH is a more popular/bigger company than TNA clearly does not actually watch NOAH or keep any tabs on them or they'd realize that NOAH's attendance has gone to total shit, they don't even have a TV deal anymore, and they're in serious financial trouble. I'm hardly TNA fan number one, but if you're going to make these arguments atleast know what you're talking about in regards to foreign companies.

Exactly. The reason a lot of these nerds put up all of these stats about foreign promotions is because in their weak little minds they don't want to give TNA any respect since it's not the WWE.
Again, taking Byers off this list would be the fair thing to do. Whether or not you like the promotion, whenever a wrestler wins their biggest title it's a noteworthy accomplishment.
Bully Ray has been a much bigger heel than R-Truth and come Sunday, R-Truth will be back to jobbing to guys like Evan Bourne and John Morrison. Bully Ray has actually made his feud with Styles worth watching.
To all of those who wish to see TNA go away, just remember....WWE 2002.

Ask any casual wrestling fan outside the US what is TNA and most would not know because outside the US, TNA does not get much exposure.

TNA is terrible. Kennedy winning his second TNA title off a 52 year old man is not an accomplishment.
Now R-Truth is becoming the single biggest thing on RAW right now.
I know they are experimenting for the summer, but man, Truth is killing it. The writers are giving him good things to work off of.

Nice to see TNA get their fair share of recognition following their pay per view for once. All this in spite of a three hour Raw. Nice job, everyone but Byers.
Seriously, if Wes Kirk can leave out Bully Ray and AJ to include Sheamus, Ibushi, Byers can include a guy who won a world championship in TNA. He can honestly say he didn't know it happened.
His typical excuse, "Oh, I didn't watch it so I can't give it credit." Total bullshit of course, since I seriously doubt he attended Best of the Super Juniors live. Or every other foreign and indy occurance he ranks every week. If the guy seriously saw every one of those shows before adding them to his list, he wouldn't have time for anything else between the constant overseas travelling, going to the shows and writing the columns.

There's a difference between not watching something and not *following* it.
No, I don't see any Japanese or indy stuff live. However, I keep up with new developments in those companies and watch the shows after they occur, so I know what's happening the promotion and can tell you when an accomplishment means something.
TNA, meanwhile, I haven't watched more than five times in the last three years, and I can't tell you the last time I've even read a recap of an episode of Impact. It's not just that I don't watch it. It's that I have NO CLUE what's going on 99% of the time. Yeah, I know Kennedy won the title, but I know nothing about the context when it comes time to determine whether it's a title win worth voting for or whether it's meaningless.
I'd just be voting blind with no understanding of the product, and I can't do that, just like I don't vote for lucha 99% of the time.

The most of the people who come to this site watch WWE and/or TNA and maybe a few indies here and there. When writers on this site bang on about foriegn promotions that most people dont have the time to watch (or the the paticence to ignore the language barrier) it can be aggravating. I've no problem with people watching what they like, but this is just an average reader's point of view.

Byers, the problem is you've openly admited hating TNA and hoping they go out of business. Considering they have the second largest group of fans on this site its just annoying you go out of your way to find reasons not to vote for their wrestlers. As someone pointed out before, even Wes Kirk votes for WWE guys if they've had a good week.

I don't have a problem with that - but if that's the case, even you should admit that you shouldn't be voting in this thing because your vote throws off the results. If you insist on voting, why can't you be bothered to browse a TNA PPV recap before doing so? It would only be good journalism.
