411’s Wrestler of the Week 06.20.11: Year Seven, Week 12
Posted by Larry Csonka on 06.20.2011
Jeff Jarrett won a top title in Mexico, Kota Ibushi won the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title, Ezekiel Jackson took home the IC Title and more! Check out 411's Wrestler of the Week for all the details and for an updated look at the Year-End standings!
Welcome to Week 12, Year SEVEN, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…
Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…
Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…
1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1
...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year around WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…
Larry Csonka
1) Kota Ibushi
Following up on his victory in the Best of the Super Jr. tournament, Ibushi defeated IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion Prince Devitt to win the title this week. Ibushi was a guy to watch, but it is obvious now more than ever that the rocket has been strapped to his ass. This was a great two weeks for Ibushi, no doubt.
2) Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson: IWGP Tag Champs Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson defeated GHC Tag Team Champions Yoshihiro Takayama & Takuma Sano and now hold both sets of titles.
3) Jeff Jarrett: Defeated Zorro to win the AAA Mega Super Duper Heavyweight Title of the Universe. Plus had some great interaction on Impact with Angle this week.
4) Gunner
5) Ezekiel Jackson
Michael Ornelas
1) Kota Ibushi
Ended Prince Devitt's reign as IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion.
2) Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson: Now hold both the IWGP and GHC Heavyweight Tag Team Championships.
3) Dolph Ziggler: Beat Kofi Kingston for the Intercontinental Championship.
4) Zack Ryder
5) La Mascara
Ryan Byers
1) Giant Bernard
Many reading this are probably most familiar with Bernard under his WWE ring names of Prince Albert or A-Train, but, ever since leaving WWE, the guy has had the best years of his career in Japan under the moniker Giant Bernard. This was an absolutely huge week for him. He was already one half of the IWGP Tag Team Champions, holding the top tag titles in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Then, this weekend, he and partner Karl Anderson defeated NOAH's reigning GHC Tag Team Champions in a title vs. title match, meaning that Bernard now holds the tag belts in two of the biggest companies in Japan at the same time. From there, things got even better, as the big man issued a challenge to reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi, which was accepted. Now Bernard has a chance to add singles gold to his two tag belts. This man is on fire.
2) Jeff Jarrett: The former WCW Heavyweight Champion and WWE Intercontinental Champion has popped up in Mexico on and off over the past several years, and, every time he does, he's immediately over as one of the biggest heels in the country. This weekend, Jarrett ventured south of the border once more, where he pinned Zorro to win the heavyweight championship of AAA, the biggest company in Mexico. This is the most important title Jarrett has held since his WCW days, and it will be interesting to see whether he gets an extended run there or whether this is a transitional reign.
3) Kota Ibushi: Last week, Ibushi became the first "outsider" to win New Japan's Best of the Super Juniors tournament. This week, he got his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title match that was guaranteed as a result of winning said tournament. In a bit of a surprise, he defeated champ Prince Devitt to become the new titleholder. Ibushi now gets a rematch against Devitt on the annual Sumo Hall show of his home promotion, DDT, which will no doubt tear down the house.
4) PAC
5) La Mascara
Robert S. Leighty Jr
1) CM Punk
Punk started the week by defeating John Cena in a non-title match and finished the week by beating Rey Mysterio on PPV. A nice segment with Steve Austin on RAW was also appreciated.
2) Ezekiel Jackson: Big Zeke wins the IC Title as his push on SmackDown continues.
3) Dolph Ziggler: Ziggler is your new IC Champ after defeating Kofi at the PPV. I put him below Zeke because Dolph has been at this level in the past.
4) Jeff Jarrett
5) Randy Orton/John Cena
Wes Kirk
1) Kota Ibushi
The last two weeks have been gold for the mostly unknown wrestler, but things are about to change after he not only won the New Japan Best of the Super Juniors tournament last week but became the new IWGP Jr. Heavyweight champion this week as well, despite the fact he is viewed as an outsider to NJPW. This is equivalent to somebody like Evan Bourne winning the Royal Rumble and then beating the World Champion the next week for the title.
2) Giant Bernard: One of the biggest wins in the former A-Train's career was taking both the IWGP and GHC tag team championships in one title for title match and then challenging the IWGP champion Hiroshi Tanahashi for the title, which was accepted. There is now a chance, however remote, that Bernard could hold the IWGP tag and heavyweight titles as well as the GHC tag title, and that is huge considering not only the titles but the fact he achieves all of this as a gaijin to Japan.
3) Alex Riley: After taking Miz down several times and getting a huge response behind him, Riley has gotten the biggest win of his career so far by pinning the Miz cleanly at Capitol Punishment. This shows an enormous amount of faith in him and it may well be justified as the next few months will show.
4) Gunner
5) Rob Van Dam
Michael Bauer
1) Giant Bernard & Karl Anderson
It is very close between 1 and 2 this week. But in the end, I think being a double champion in Japan is a much bigger and tougher accomplishment. But Bernard and Anderson indeed won the GHC Tag Titles and now hold the tag titles in two of the biggest Japanese companies. That is huge, regardless of who you are.
2) Kota Ibushi: So not only has this NJPW outsider won the Best of Super Juniors tourney, but he beat Prince Deviit for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship. Again, another huge deal. It would be like AJ Styles winning Money in the Bank and then the World Title... while not being under a WWE contract.
3) Ezekiel Jackson: His first real WWE singles title means more than Dolph winning again.
4) Dolph Ziggler
5) Jeff Jarrett
Greg DeMarco
1) Giant Bernard/Karl Anderson
One of the most underrated pairings in the states, Bernard & Anderson captured the GHC Tag Team Championships, adding them to the IWGP Tag Team Championships they already had. That's like Beer Money adding the WWE World Tag Team Championships to their TNA World Tag Team Championships.
2) Kota Ibushi: Last week, Ibushi wins the Best of the Super Juniors Tournament. This week, he ends the reign of IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Prince Devitt. A big week in the career of Kota Ibushi.
3) Jeff Jarrett: Jarrett may have said "Adios" to TNA Impact Wrestling on Thursday night, but he sure did make the most out of his return to Mexico, defeating Zorro at TripleMania to win the AAA Heavyweight Championship. I can only imagine the heat and money Jarrett can draw in Mexico.
4) Dolph Ziggler (new WWE US Champion)
5) Ezekiel Jackson (new WWE Intercontinental Champion)
Steve Cook
1) Karl Anderson
Hey, if guys like Ryan & Wes are just gonna vote for Bernard and not show the Machine Gun any love, I'll go ahead and put my boy over. The NWF product now holds two of Japan's most prestigious tag team titles along with Giant Bernard, and has come a long way from the Richwood Flea Market.
2) Jeff Jarrett: Won the AAA Heavyweight Championship at TripleMania, so that trip that Kurt sent him on to Mexico is already working out for him.
3) CM Punk: Got victories over Rey Mysterio & John Cena, and had an entertaining conversation with Stone Cold Steve Austin. The Punker didn't win any titles or tournaments this week, but he still got a lot done.
4) Ezekiel Jackson
5) LA Par-K
Jeremy Thomas
1) Gunner
That's right, you heard me. Gunner. The guy's pinned two TNA World Champions in successive weeks. How can you not give him very serious credit for that? No one got a career boost like this guy is getting, and he's my pick.
2) Jeff Jarrett: Won the AAA Heavyweight Championship at TripleMania.
3) CM Punk: Got his first win on WWE PPV since…Jesus, what. Over the Limit 2010? Anyway, in a hell of a long time and did it in a great match to boot.
4) Dolph Ziggler/Ezekiel Jackson (tie)
5) Giant Bernard/Karl Anderson

411 didn't want Karl Anderson in the #1 spot with A-Train so they make just one tag member #1?
This website is so boffed.

The TNA hate is strong here. Props to Larry, Wes and Jeremy but what the heck does Gunner have to do to get some points? He pins the TNA World Champ in two successive weeks (Sting and Anderson) and people are more interested in what A-Train did in the Far East. Ridiculous.
Posted By: Kedrix (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 03:36 PM
Why A-Train didnt come over when Tomko came back to TNA in 06-07, I have no clue, they could of been TNA's version of the Miracle Violence Connection and anchored TNAs tag division for at least 6-8 months.
Posted By: The Fuj (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 03:38 PM
Ziggler won the U.S. Title.
Punk last won on PPV at Extreme Rules 2010.
Byers, stop pretending TNA doesn't exist.

Robert Leighty, go watch actual wrestling instead of this crap the WWE pushes out of it's anus.
And no, I'm not referring to TNA/Impact Wrestling either.

Winning a title in the #2 company in the world (NJPW), that has 40 years of history >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> defeating a champion (and not winning the title) of a title that has no value.
Posted By: Guest#2710 (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 04:06 PM
In terms of the attempts to kind of quantify the impact of Kota Ibushi's week, the "AJ Styles winning Money in the bank, only to go and win the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania" comes pretty close to it.
Ibushi does so much work with New Japan, on a pretty regular basis, that the fact that he's an unsigned talent isn't all that significant, outside of eliminating the chance that the New Japan audience even takes to him as "their guy".
Also, as big as it was to have Ibushi win the title from Devitt, a guy that New Japan's audience sees as their "junior ace", it's not like he came in and beat Hiroshi Tanahashi for the belt. If that had happened, it would've been about as major as "Styles winning MiTB, and then beating John Cena, at Wrestlemania, for the WWE Championship.

byers=gimmick to make people almost give half a shit about these columns
Posted By: James (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 04:42 PM
I think a FEW more people might watch Wrestlemania than watched Top of the Super Juniors...just a wild guess.
Also, Austin Aries got screwed. No votes for any position, not even a mention?
Posted By: Guest#9815 (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 05:07 PM
Shouldn't both Karl and Bernard be WOTW since they are tag partners instead of getting separate votes? I don't understand how you guys vote some time
Posted By: Kevin (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 05:13 PM
Ryan Byers your gimmick is lame. And the AAA title is a TNA prop.
Posted By: poffo316 (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 05:27 PM
Ryan, not only did you insult TNA with your comments but you also showed that you have no understanding of Mexican wrestling.
Something I've just wondered about, if you haven't watch TNA in years and you don't read recaps and you pretend that it doens't exist then why are you assuming it's bad.
Posted By: Guest#7719 (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 05:30 PM
How did Jarrett get higher points than L.A. fricking Park?
Posted By: Yano #1 (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 05:38 PM
Alex Riley doesn't get any love. First he's in an awesome segment with roddy piper and then he gets a clean pin over a guy who just won the wrestlemania main event. That doesn't even warrant a mention?
Posted By: SolidCPlus (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 05:48 PM
"Ryan Byers your gimmick is lame. And the AAA title is a TNA prop."
TNA's calling it the Mexican Heavyweight Championship, because it's not even good enough to be compared to their World Title, and one of their wrestlers currently holds it, I would like to agree with you.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I voted for Bernard singularly because a) he is the real star of the team and b) in addition to winning the double titles, he also essentially became the number one contender to the IWGP Heavyweight Championship when he challenged Tanahashi to a title match.

I remember the week after Joe v AJ v Daniels II (an easy MOTY candidate) and Byers decided not to vote that week because he could bare to give credit where its due and praise TNA.

You've made comments before about wanting them to go out of business. You refuse to vote for anything TNA does, and claim its because you dont watch the show. Despite this, you vote for any puro wrestlers acheivements even if you havent seen it. You know that TNA is the second biggest promotion in this country yet you refuse to give them any props because it doesnt fit into your 'indie guy' image.
Posted By: Guest#8810 (Guest) on June 20, 2011 at 08:20 PM
I remember a couple of years back when Byers would always give votes to nigel mcguiness. Then he became Desmond Wolfe in TNA and even though he had an awesome debut and had awesome matches with Angle Byers suddenly pretened he didnt exist. That must have hurt him.

Considering you childishly refuse to vote for the second biggest promotion in the country and are only kept on the site to get more hits from people wanting to troll you, you're the last person to talk about credibility.

1.Constantly refering to TNA/Impact as the second biggest promotion in the company doesn't make them any more important as there's a HUGE drop off between 1 and 2. To put that into perspective, If WWE is #1 and TNA/Impact is #2 then ROH is 2A.
2.Here's something for you to site: TNA is an abomination in the world of professional wrestling. They should go out of business as soon as possible.

Two things...
Byers admitted he doesn't watch TNA, so he doesn't vote anything TNA because it would be dishonest.
That is actually admirable.
Second, if you truly believe that he is only trolling, you took the bait, and shot your entire point to hell.

You may find this hard to believe, but not only did no one notice, but no one cared that you were gone.
Your rankings are just an obnoxious attempt to be relevent, and are actually skipped over by everyone but you every week.
Next time you 'take a vacation' let us know in advance so we can plan to not give a shit.

Oh my word! I mean, I do love Wrestling, and I do love watching different wrestlers float up and down the '411 wrestler of the year' tally, but fucking hell.. some of you people who comment on/write for this site are fucking, pure sad bastards (Yes, I am aware I'm a sad bastard with no life who lives in his 'moms' basement and have a neckbeard, and I will 'GTFO' and 'STFU' and leave the rest of you to argue who the better athletic soap actor is, just thought I'd launch my opinion in your faces). I really do try my best not to scroll down to the comments section every time, but I just can't stop myself from looking at the train wreck of spoilt brats pissing and moaning about something that is WRITTEN! Wrestling isn't even real!!! You don't see '411 Soap star of the week' with loads of old women crying and moaning because Ken Barlow hasn't been used outside of the Rovers for 2 months. "HE'S TOO OLD, IT'S TIME FOR THE YOUTH MOVEMENT" Yous would all scream if it was the case.
And now I've ranted incoherently for long enough that I might as well actually be one of you. Fuck heads, the lot of you.
TL;DR: You are all seriously sad.
