411 Fact or Fiction 10.27.11: HHH vs. Nash, Muppets, Storm as Champ, More
Posted by Steve Cook on 10.27.2011
Are we interested in a match between Kevin Nash and Triple H? Will the TNA be able to sustain their ratings increase for Impact? Will Gail Kim's career flourish in TNA? 411's Terra Calaway & Andy Critchell debate these topics and more in this week's 411 Fact or Fiction: Wrestling!
Hi, hello & welcome to the wrestling edition of 411 Fact or Fiction! I'm Steve Cook, and it's been quite the week in the world of wrestling. WWE held their Vengeance PPV, which re-invigorated the issue between Kevin Nash & Triple H & had Mark Henry & Big Show implode the ring with a monster superplex. A new Divas challenger was established on Raw, more Twitter mentions were made than any show in the history of the universe, and the Muppets will be coming to town next week! Meanwhile, Impact Wrestling got a huge rating, James Storm won the TNA Championship, & Gail Kim made her return in surprising fashion.
We'll be discussing these issues with two fine folks. First of all, the newest member of the 411 Family…she's the WILD North American Champion, one-fifth of my Ladies Fave Five & writer of The Hot Stuff every Sunday, the lovely & talented Terra Calaway!
Her opponent is the co-host of the 411 on Wrestling Monday Edition, Mark Henry's number one fan & an Offtheteam.com regular…say hello to Andy Critchell, SON!
Questions were sent out Monday, before Impact had their taping on Wednesday just to render my TNA questions irrelevant.
Participants were told to expect WWE & TNA-related questions.
1. Triple H vs. Kevin Nash is something you want to see.
Terra Calaway:FICTION. Maybe it's because I am a newer face in pro wrestling, but I want to see the younger guys being pushed. I'm sorry, if I wanted to watch Triple H and Kevin Nash, I've got tons of wrestling DVDs to look back on. I'm tired of being force fed the old and begging for the new.
Andy Critchell:FICTION. This is pretty simple; the match wasn't good when they did it in 2003 and both guys are older, slower, and less apt to have a good match now than they were then. I think a Nash/Triple H match in 2011 will have to be some kind of weapons match to cover up for their shortcomings and even then it would still probably be slow and plodding. Regardless of what I want to see, I know that this match will happen and my hope is that Triple H will recognize his limitations (I don't think that is an issue for Nash, he has always known his limitations) and keep this match short and to the point.
Score: 1 for 1
2. Mark Henry & Big Show imploding the ring was an awesome way to end their match at Vengeance.
Terra Calaway:FACT. It was a perfect way to end the match. It keeps Mark Henry strong and keeps Big Show from losing his return PPV match. They are both beasts in the ring by size alone, so they can't just make one look bad. Then you have the fact one is a champion, so of course he has to look strong. Then you have the other that is bigger than the rest of the roster, so if you make him look bad, you just look silly. Perfect way to end it and to keep the fans happy with a match that didn't end with a winner.
Andy Critchell:FACT. This is also very simple. They were able to recreate one of the most significant spots in the history of WWE and it completely made sense given the context and the two men involved. Just watching it and seeing the crowd react the way they did tells me that it was an awesome way to end the match. Sure, it was done before but only once and that was back in 2003 so more than enough time has passed. I know that DQ/no contest finishes tend to piss people off, especially when they are done on PPV, but an exception can clearly be made in this case if for no other reason than what we saw was clearly exceptional. It had two added bonuses; it allowed for both guys to end the match looking strong and provided a really interesting starting point for the ADR/Cena match. I know that a lot of people think Vengeance was an unremarkable show but this particular spot will make it stand out from the crowd and stay in the fans' minds for a long time.
Score: 2 for 2
3. You are looking forward to seeing The Muppets on Raw.
Terra Calaway:FICTION. I get that they are a part of entertainment history. I get that. I also get that WWE brings in celebrities to help push their movies which in turn gets mainstream attention to WWE. What I don't get is why WWE is willing to let themselves look foolish. I'm sorry, but a grown 6'4" beefed up guy talking to a Muppet, and God forbid, have him embarrassed by a Muppet (I'm thinking it'll be Ziggler), makes the company look like crap. If Kermit the Frog can punk a Superstar, then a 10 year old kid is going to think he can punk the same Superstar.
Andy Critchell:FICTION. When this was first announced I rolled my eyes and figured this was some kind of attempt at generating false hipster nostalgia (like going to a bar to see Mr. Belding from Saved by the Bell) which will ultimately fall flat. I mean there are a lot of things that we thought were cool back in the day and when we look at them now it is clear that they sucked but we were just too stupid to know any better. I figured the Muppets were in that realm. Then on Monday night I saw the commercial for their appearance and seeing Kermit in the Cena hat and doing the You Can't See Me bit was very charming but still overall I just don't care. I am not actively opposed to it and I figure that the Halloween edition of Raw will just be a goofy throw away episode but to say I am looking forward to it is a bit of a stretch.
Score: 3 for 3
4. Alicia Fox is a good choice for Beth Phoenix's next challenger.
Terra Calaway:Fa--ict--Er... I really can't tell you. Yeah, Alicia can be a good wrestler... when she wants. She's not a consistent performer. I've seen her botch an entire match and I've seen her put on a nice little performance. However, with the amount of time WWE has been giving their girls, I am hopeful that she can keep up a consistent good performance for those 2 minutes.
Andy Critchell:FICTION. Normally I am in favor of anything that allows me to see Foxy on the regular but in this case I can't say she is a good choice if for no other reason than she doesn't really have any character at all. Honestly, I thought she was a heel so having her be a babyface challenger seems kind of random. Of course, this is a symptom of a larger problem within the Divas division where most of the girls don't really have a character. We knew who Eve was because she would pal around with Kelly Kelly every week but Alicia Fox has spent so much time on the B-shows that it was easy to forget that she is still with WWE. I expect that if they are going to build Fox as a challenger that we will get to see some character development but right now it just isn't there. So basically Fox is not a good choice but to be fair there really aren't any good choices right now.

Help Terra TakeDown Breast Cancer! It's for a great cause, the pictures are fantastic & the deadline is Monday, so hop on that ASAP.
5. James Storm is a deserving TNA Champion.
Andy Critchell:FICTION. Obviously in real life James Storm has been a long standing employee of TNA that has always performed at a high level and not caused any problems so he deserves the title as much as anyone else. But from a storyline perspective, Storm absolutely does not "deserve" to be champion. He's never been higher than midcard status and has not been on any kind of significant winning streak that would necessitate his insertion into the world title picture. He was basically just a random guy picked by Sting to face off against Angle and he was lucky enough to get a fluke win. Doesn't that make Storm look incredibly weak? I like Storm and think he will do a great job as champ but in the here and now, you can't say that he is "deserving."
Terra Calaway:FACT. I think he is deserving and long overdue. That title has been bounced around to the same few people for a good minute now. If TNA wants to amp up their game, they push the guys to that status. WWE refuses to do the same. I am happy he is the champion, I think the moments after the match (When he tried to give the title to Roode) really made it a moment people would connect to, and I think he's going to be a great face for that company.
Score: 3 for 5
6. Impact's high rating last week is the beginning of a trend of higher ratings for the show.
Andy Critchell:FICTION. If history is any indication this high rating is just an outlier and TNA will soon be back at the level they are always at. It seems to me that TNA popped a rating because they totally fucked up Bound for Glory and people were curious to see the results, like slowing down on the road when you pass a car wreck. Also I would imagine the spoilers saying that Storm would be winning the title also drove viewers. Besides, it is one thing to pop a rating, quite another to sustain it and in my mind TNA has not done anything to do that. You have James Storm as a weak champ and you have 80 year old Hulk Hogan as the top babyface in the promotion. Who's that going to attract?
Terra Calaway:FACT…FOR A LITTLE I think people will get excited to see the new champions (Storm and Sky), however with the "lovely" creative staff they have there, the rest of the show will get stale and people just won't be able to stomach it anymore. So the next week or two will be nice ratings, but they'll go back down unless something drastically changes in that company.
Score: 3 for 6
7. Gail Kim's career will be revitalized in TNA.
Andy Critchell:FICTION. I think Gail Kim will be much happier in TNA and I think she will be given more of a prominent role but to me this is kind of a zero sum game. In TNA she will once again be the big fish in a small pond rather than the small fish in the big WWE pond so I am not sure she will really be any better off in terms of career exposure. And really, TNA's viewership is much less than WWE's so there is a good chance she will actually have less exposure. Plus, I can't imagine she will be making as much money with TNA as she was in WWE and that should be considered as well. Maybe I'm nuts but being seen by less people for less money doesn't exactly sound like revitalization to me.
Terra Calaway:FACT. I think with her shoot interview, she's a super hot item in wrestling right now. She got a lot of attention from those who only glanced her way and gained the attention of so many new fans that she's going to be sky rocketing. Hopefully she and TNA take that fire behind her and get that Knockouts division poppin'! Well, more than it already is. I also think pairing her with Rayne, one of the lesser talented (I'm not saying she isn't talented, I am saying that with the quality of women in that company, she's a little bit lower on the totem pole), she'll be able to help push Rayne up.
Score: 3 for 7
8. Twitter is a good way for wrestling promotions to further storylines & characters.
Andy Critchell:FACT. I don't think there can be any argument about this. Part of what makes Twitter so popular is that it can provide real interaction between the wrestlers and their fans and it allows for the wrestlers to control their own message and character to a degree. It doesn't cost WWE anything to do it and it can only benefit them in the long run as it allows them to continue storylines 24/7, not just when their programs are on. As an added bonus it helps to foster a fan community so that maybe the closet WWE fan won't feel out of place for actually being a fan and would be more apt to see a live event or buy a PPV without fear of being made fun of.
Terra Calaway:BOTH. Twitter is a good way for WWE and TNA to further storylines and characters because they are on TV. They can easily tie Twitter in with video packages, announcers, etc. For independent promotions looking to do the same, hate to tell you but not everyone that goes to your shows have a Twitter. So you start a storyline on Twitter, the next show you have you're going to have some verrry confused audience members.
Final Score: 4 for 8
It seems that our two friends mostly agree when it comes to WWE, but disagree on TNA topics. TNA can be very divisive. I must say I am somewhat shocked by the Muppet hate going on here, but it is what it is. I'd like to thank Terra & Andy for their participation, and you the reader for reading & commenting on what they have to say. For Terra Calaway & Andy Critchell, this is Steve Cook saying thanks for reading, and join us next week for more Fact or Fiction!

james storm's title win was to rushed, no build-up at all. sure he is deserving to be a champion, to inject something new to the stale title holders, but it being a fluke-like hurt it a little.

The Jersey Shore guys suck, no doubt. But at least they are actual human beings. I'm sure the WWE wrestlers will have fun interacting with the Muppets, but it's going to look ridiculous and the mockings from my non-wrestling friends on tuesday are gonna be horrific. Will Del Rio lock Kermit in the arm breaker and force Cena to make the save? I bet Vince wishes Chavo was still with the company so he could job him out to Miss Piggy.

Wow. I learned something from this Facr or Fiction. I learned, to my utter amazement, that 411 does have some writers for the wrestling section that do know something about wrestling. That has not been evident in a very long time until now. Good job, Andy and Terra. Please don't allow yourselves to be dragged down the utter mediocrity and incompetence of some of the other so-called wrestling writers in 411.

A) I can't believe that Brock Lesnar's WWE run was over 8 years ago, that's kind of ridiculous.
B) You're forgetting that even before they did it with Show and Lesnar, they did it with Bam Bam Bigelow and Taz in ECW. Not that it makes it any less cool, but it's just not as original as you made it seem.

I'm more excited to see the Muppets on RAW than I have been to see RAW in quite a while. I imagine it will be a few regular Muppet vignette that mention wrestling, and maybe something with Santino and/or some Divas. . . I'm looking forward to it!

You guys clearly are missing the point when it comes to wrestling. Wrestling is SUPPOSED to be entertaining. If you lack the imagination to see how RAW combined with the Muppets could be anything other than entertaining, then I just feel sorry for you.

Dude, youre taking wrestling way too seriously if you believe this. Its just fun for one night... Now, if Kermit superkicks Dolph Ziggler, then weve got an issue. But this really isnt any different than Bob Barker calling out Chris Jericho, which if I remember correctly everyone loved.

I never saw the first HHH/Nash go around, but that's because it was during a time where I stopped watching...much like now. I've read enough though to realize that it was pretty much terrible then and at their age now I can't see anyway for it to be good now.

Wow. A lot of hate for the Muppets. It's too bad the younger generation has been dumbed down to the point of thinking Jersey Shore is quality entertainment and "remakes" are equal to the original films. They just don't understand real entertainment.
Way to take two grown oiled up steroid injected men rolling around a canvass in tiny panty like clothing WAY too serious.

What 411 doesn't know is the muppets used to be one of the hottest tv shows going had many huge a list celebrity's on there shows. I guess 411 lost there smile.. or might be too young to remember the muppets.

Just about everyone I've talked to (grown adults) LOVE that the Muppets are going to be on RAW! I think it could be a lot of fun! And considering it's Halloween night, the rating isn't going to be that high anyways, so why not have some fun?

"WWE refuses to do the same."
This is just flat out wrong. People keep throwing this line around like it's 2004, look at the damn roster. You have two world champions who had never held the title before, the guy challenging for the WWE title is the guy everyone wanted to have the prominent role he's getting, Sheamus is on his way to becoming the face of the company, Cody is being treated as well as any midcard champion in a while, Doplh gets plenty of exposure on both shows on a weekly basis, Truth and Miz have been a major part of the most important storyline in the company for the last while...So what are you talking about really?
Posted By: Guest#7031 (Guest) on October 27, 2011 at 06:37 AM

Guess who's not going to get a developmental contract now?
I really don't see all the Muppet hate. We're mad because there is going to be Muppets on a show where to waxed down men or women pretend to fight? Is it any worse than Bob Barker? Personally, I think the WWE should jump on the zombie kick and have the zombie personas of Guerrero, Benoit, Owen, etc, invade this Monday's Raw. Now that would be some good tv.

A question everyone needs to ask themselves, if TNA did a muppet crossover, how would you react? And please, no 'the muppets wouldnt sink to that level' jokes.

1. Fiction. Fans wanted to see Diesel, not Kevin Nash. In fact, Nash hasn`t drawn since 1996.
2. Fact. The best way you could end this match. It recreated a great moment in the past, helped out the Del Rio/Cena match, and helps out the unsafe working conditions storyline big time.
3. Fiction. What are they gonna do, have Beth Phoenix make Miss Piggy scream? Have Nash club Fozzy Bear with a sledgehammer?
4.Fiction, she`s cannon fodder. The "undefined" challenger won`t help out the divas title scene.
5.Fact. However, Making both Storm AND Roode mearly transitional champions just to keep the fans of the TNA originals happy untill TNA puts the belt back on a former WWE star (insert any here) is totally the wrong thing to do. It continues to make TNA look weak.
6. Fiction. To hotshot the title for ratings reeks of WCW`s dying days. This could be TNA`s jump the shark period.
7.Fiction. She`ll get lost in the shuffle......AGAIN.
8.Fact, for both WWE and TNA. A perfect online platform for promos. WWE will use it to almost it`s full potential, but Eric Bischoff, with hios hatred of all things online including his own TNA fans, will not use it effectively, which is unfortunate.

"You guys clearly are missing the point when it comes to wrestling. Wrestling is SUPPOSED to be entertaining. If you lack the imagination to see how RAW combined with the Muppets could be anything other than entertaining, then I just feel sorry for you."
Exactly. Terra and Andy should loosen up. The Muppets are great and might actually make Raw entertaining for once. And you know Miss Piggy and Vicki Guerrerro are going to face off. That's gold!
Unless Gonzo becomes IC Champ or something you have nothing to complain about when it comes to hurting wrestler's credibility. A few skits and jokes don't do any harm.

Chris Jericho vs. Bob Barker was gold.
The Muppets can be used in the same manner IF they do it the right way.
Miss Piggy and Vickie?
Beaker and Sheamus?
Sam the Eagle and Swagger?
Swedish Chef and JR talking over BBQ sauces?
Animal and CM Punk?
Statler and Waldorf at the end of each segment?

I agree with some of what Terra said, and less of what Andy said. I think the Muppets thing will be funny, and its okay to have a lighthearted show like this every once in a while. Throw in the fact that the Muppets have their first major movie coming out in over a decade this Thanksgiving, and the promotion machine that is RAW makes it a win-win situation.
The only thing anyone should be griping about is the fact that delrio is still a champion.

With regards to the Triple H/Nash feud - they've only had one proper feud before and that was in 2003 when HHH was heel and Nash was face and Trips was running thru every former WCW headliner, pretty much all of his 2003 feuds sucked. I'm actually interested in this feud, purely because Triple H as a face and Nash as a Heel works better.

"Muppets > Jersey shore TNA.

I beg to differ that the Jersey Shore cast are actual human beings. They are douchebags.
It's the Hallowe'en show, just go with it.

Well, Kim's already won a title, so it looks like she's better off in TNA. And Alicia Fox is easily one of their worst workers, male or female, so hell no, she doesn't deserve a shot.

It's funny cause it's true.

To those who don't want to see the Muppets on RAW clearly don't have a sense of humor. Who doesn't want to hear Statler & Waldorf on commentary, or see Miss Piggy meeting Vickie Guerrero. The scenes write themselves.

"I personally think ripping off the Lesnar/Big Show spot was ridiculous. Vince is so lazy at this point he is actually having to rip off himself. Embarrassing."
Yeah because everything done in wrestling should be brand new and never done before. There's no recycling ever in wrestling. Yeah right. Idiot.

Its funny how many times the Big Show has been involved in most "breaking the ring"
1999- big show chokeslams undertaker through the ring
2003- brock-big show superplex imploding the ring
2005- big show chokeslams jbl through the ring from the top turnbuckle
2011- big show-henry superplex

I agree with most of the things you said but.... sheamus as the face of the company? WTH s wrog with wrestling fans these days?

I'm sure you all just remember the kiddified version of the muppets. But the original muppet show ran in prime time and was something of an Adult Swim for its time. The new movie looks to be trying to take some of that back. I have no problems with this
Posted By: Guest#7888 (Guest) on October 27, 2011 at 01:45 PM
Whats amazing to me is that you're talking like the Muppets is a STEP DOWN for wrestling. Wrestling is the lowest form of entertainment. The Muppets are Vince's wet dream "mainstream."
Mila Kunis, Selena Gomez, Emily Blunt, Jason Segal, Amy Adams, John Krasinski, Neil Patrick Harris, Zack Galifiwhatever, Jack Black, Rashida Jones, Danny MFing Trejo, Whoopi Goldberg, Katy Perry, Ricky Gervais, Billy Crystal, Donald Glover, Alan Arkin, Kathy Griffin, Judd Hirsch, Liza Minelli, Wanda Sykes, Rachael Ray and Dave Grohl are all making appearances in the new Muppet Movie. How many of those guys are frothing at the mouth to be on RAW?
That's going to bring down a show whose biggest "star" moment is Seth Green in a main event tag team match? Wow.
Vince should join Kermit's "Kiss My Ass" club for bringing himself down to wrestling's level.
Are Terra and Andy 14 years old and have to try acting like an adult by bashing anything they may have liked as a kid?

You also forget Big Show Debut of bursting through the ring from below. Then choke slamming austin through the cage.

I can totally see the muppets being a net positive for the show. Just have them take over production, and screw up in hilarious muppet fashion. Skeeter in charge of the truck, the Swedish chef in charge of catering. Limit those to cut away comedy segments that last about 1 minute a piece and that takes care of your comic relief to allow the wrestling to be serious. Of course that requires the creative team to be competent (ha) and preferably to work with the muppet people to maximize the value.
Quick hits on muppet ideas:
Wrestlers complain that catering is a mess only to have the Swedish chef running around chasing chickens with a butcher knife.
The hecklers sitting up in a box seat all night throwing out 1 liners. "it's not half bad.""you're right, it was all bad!"
Baldy the eagle disapproves of everything.
Cookie monster and big show. Nuff said
If you absolutely must involve them in a match, dolph ziggler does the job to big bird, with an assist from mason Ryan, only to reveal big bird as zack Ryder. W is for woo! Woo! Woo! Y is for you know it!
Of course, the pre-req is creative knowing what their doing. Knowing creative, they'll have Kermit make awesome truth look like idiots, Oscar the grouch lay out mark Henry with a garbage can and all-American perfection do a clean job to the up and coming tag team of big bird and the snuffalupagus. Oh yeah and don't forget miss piggy punking Beth Phoenix and Natalya. Totally gonna happen.

nobody, and i mean NOOOOOOOOOOOO-BODY wants to see kevin nash in-ring.
nobody wants to see him in ring, near the ring, or anywhere on television, unless he's waiting to get dropped into a dunk tank full of dog vomit.
if that big boring dud needs money that bad, hhh should float him a low interest loan instead of giving him a payday.

A question everyone needs to ask themselves, if TNA did a muppet crossover, how would you react? And please, no 'the muppets wouldnt sink to that level' jokes.
Posted By: Guest#4670 (Guest) on October 27, 2011 at 08:25 AM
The Muppets would never sink to that level...
But seriously why all the hate for the Muppets? They are awesome!! Their bits will be kept to a minimmum I'm sure and I'd rather see the Muppets brand of comedy than anything WWE usally thinks is funny, saves for Santino he has to do a bit with one of them.
Ya, fun and colorful over the top characters are definetly what's missing from wrestling now a days...unless you watch CHIKARA

Granted i think the henry-Show end was pretty cool, just as it was with Lesnar, but it raises the same question: Why is the guy giving the superplex so worn out that they couldn't get up. Lesnar gave Show an F5 which meant he had to pick him up off of the ground so that should have worn him out more. Henry powerslammed Show through a table(again a dead lift) so that should have fatigued him more. Throwing a guy(albeit a giant one) off of a rope that he's mounted on shouldn't be as wearing.
Still cool spots though...

Muppets will be harmless fun. I cant wait to see Woldorf and the other old guy make fun of everything. Hopefully they will say insider/shoot comments to make it funny.

1. HHH-GrandDaddyCool: 2003 was an epic fail, so we don't need another clusterfuck. 2. Show-Big Drippy: Would somebody please kill this piss-poor storyline? 3. The Muppets: We see that every week. It's called "WWE". 4. Edge's mistress: Oh, please. 5. James Storm: It's about damn time. 6. Impact: Retro Wrestling Wars. 7. Gail Kim: Is it too late for her to get into Playboy? 8. Twitter: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Nash? Nash v...no. And it does not matter what the rest of the equation is. Nash needs to go far, far away. He is the worst "big man" in the history of wrestling.
Show v. Henry? Who cares about two fat guys stealing Brock Lesner's move?
Muppets? Welcome to the '70s.
Alicia Fox? Pass. I would rather see Aisha Tyler fight Beth Phoenix. She might kick Beth in the balls (and extra to anyone who gets the reference).
James Storm? He can be a decent champion, if TNA does not screw it up (but they probably will).
TNA ratings? They will never be great, but they could be okay.
Gail Kim? She WILL do better in TNA than WWE (she can't do much worse). I hope that she escapes from the bitch Jarrett and strikes out on her own again.
Twitter? Twit her, I hardly even knew her? (Sorry) Twitter is crap.

Andy Critchell: The ring collapse spot has been done at least twice before, not once. ECW did it first, then WWF stole it later for the Brock / Big Show match.

"Andy Critchell wrote:

A) I can't believe that Brock Lesnar's WWE run was over 8 years ago, that's kind of ridiculous.
B) You're forgetting that even before they did it with Show and Lesnar, they did it with Bam Bam Bigelow and Taz in ECW. Not that it makes it any less cool, but it's just not as original as you made it seem."
No, Taz and Bam Bam went through the fucking ring. And, through the entrance ramp. I think the ring crashing apart was better, but the ECW thing was more believable. You would believe the ECW ring could break.
And fuck the haters, I'm looking forward to the Muppets. Maybe it's because I'm old enough to appreciate when the Muppets were relevant and awesome, I dunno. I'll still bitch if it sucks, but I'm gonna look forward to it until then.
