News and thoughts on the Chris Benoit movie, Kevin Nash's match with Triple H being pushed back, Skip Sheffield making his WWE return, the Rock's new catchphrase being trademarked and more!

From 411Mania's Canadian offices in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, this is The Wrestling News Experience, with Stephen Randle!
Not A Licensed Chiropractor
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the Experience. I am Stephen Randle, and in case you want to know how my luck works, someone managed to take out the front left quarter of my car, while it was parked in a parking lot, last week. See, but I'm lucky because they actually left their information so their insurance is covering it. Just born lucky, that's me.
Also, I hear the Blue Jays might sign Prince Fielder. I refuse to believe this might be true, because if it were, it would be awesome, and I was just getting comfortable with being mediocre to disappointing after twenty years of smashed hopes.
And I'm a little upset that I didn't know that Mick Foley was doing stand-up in Waterloo on Saturday, although I probably couldn't have gotten work off anyway. Still, irritating to know I was twenty minutes away from seeing one of my personal heroes live and I missed it. Those opportunities don't come around every day.
Ah well, at least it's nearly Christmas. Even if there is no snow yet. Thanks so much, climate change deniers. If I wanted rain in December, I'd move to Vancouver.
Moving on.
Last week, CM Punk retained his WWE Title against Alberto Del Rio, leaving the Mexican Aristocrat out of rematch clauses. However, Punk's method of victory may be up for debate, and given Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and Interim General Manager of Raw Johnny Ace and his shadow, Graduate of Harvard Law School David Otunga, don't have much love for the Second City Saint, one could easily imagine that they'll find a way to get Del Rio another title shot, probably at TLC.
Meanwhile, Roddy Piper called out John Cena for failing to acknowledge the fact that half the WWE audience doesn't particularly care for his non-threatening personality and genial nature, and claimed that allowing that hatred to fester under the surface might cost him his WrestleMania match with The Rock. Cena took this statement in stride, but is it possible that the verbal assaults of the WWE Universe might be taking their toll on him after all?
And Zack Ryder continues to make like Tim Tebow and just win, baby, but will his efforts towards a United States title shot be rewarded by those who have the power to make it happen? As successful a run as Dolph Ziggler has been on lately, it does seem like the champion may be ducking Long Island Iced Z.
Plus, we've been all but guaranteed that Brodus Clay will debut this week, so…maybe! Tonight, on Raw!
Feud of The Year!
So, word is that Triple H won't be on Raw this week, and with next week set to be the Slammy Awards, it looks like the Triple H-Kevin Nash feud remains on hold through TLC, with rumours that any potential match will be pushed back until the Royal Rumble, where it can be buried in the undercard of a PPV that is totally sold on the big Rumble match anyway.
If you've been following along with us, Kevin Nash returned at the Rumble and got a decent pop, ending his appearance with a staredown with The Big Show, which, hey, at least would have been an interesting (if bad) matchup for a quick bathroom break match at Wrestlemania. But instead, Nash goes back home and returns just over six months later, attacking WWE Champion CM Punk and costing him the title when Alberto Del Rio cashes in. And the fans aren't thrilled, because CM Punk is awesome and Kevin Nash less so, but hey, if they're doing it to put Punk over, we'll live with it. But wait, that feud gets cut off for vague reasons, and instead Triple H fires Nash before any matches can happen, and Nash starts attacking Triple H instead. So, joy, it's The Clique again, ten years after anyone even cared a little bit, but at least it'll be over with before long. And then Nash ends up accidentally injuring Triple H's shoulder with a powerbomb, so they have to push the match off Survivor Series so Triple H can heal, and Kevin Nash amuses himself by cutting rambling "angry man" promos every other week on Raw. And now we're putting it off because, apparently, WWE is worried that nobody's buying the December PPV and…I guess that would be the wrong time to put on a match that nobody would pay to see anyway?
In case you weren't counting, that's nearly a year of Kevin Nash in WWE (okay, we'll be accurate and say nearly six months since the Rumble was essentially a one-shot), and he's managed to be involved in feuds with two different active wrestlers and has not yet had a match. And he's still in an ongoing feud! At this point, I'm just curious, does WWE have any faith that Kevin Nash can actually wrestle at all, and if not, why the hell are they paying him and putting him on TV in a hot feud with…not just semi-retired Triple H, who needs the rub less than anyone on the roster except maybe John Cena, but with anybody? Is there a giant worldwide Kevin Nash fanclub that I don't know about that somehow has the purchasing power to make Vince pay attention? I mean, we basically had to buy every CM Punk shirt in existence to get Vince to push him, and even then it took the rest of the year.
But hey, it's not like anyone buys the Rumble for the undercard matches, right?
Worst. Movie. Ever.
You've probably heard by now, but if you haven't, it turns out that somebody, somewhere, is making a movie based on the book "Ring of Hell", which is a partial biography on Chris Benoit, leading up to the tragic end of his life and the murders that accompanied it. Yes, someone thought this was a good idea that will make money, because why else would you try and make a movie?
I don't know if I have enough words to explain why this is a stupid thing to do, but here goes. First of all, what's your target audience for this movie? Non-wrestling fans aren't going to go and see a movie like this, because they don't like pro wrestling and even if they're neutral towards it, most of them are at least aware of Benoit and frankly, there are about six million other movies they'd prefer to watch. A few wrestling fans will be morbid enough to check this out, I'm sure, but by and large, a lot of fans still find Benoit an incredibly painful subject to discuss, let alone watch a documentary about his slow descent into hell, especially those who, up until the events, considered him one of the best pro wrestlers in existence.
Secondly, there's no way in hell Vince McMahon is going to let you use anything WWE-related in the film, so you're going to do a biopic of guy where you can't talk about any of the people he worked with or any of the organizations he worked for? I know "based on a true story" can stretch to incredible lengths, but at that level, you might as well call him "Joe Generic Wrestler" for all the accuracy this movie's going to have.
Thirdly, what kind of ending does a movie like that have? There's absolutely nothing uplifting about the fallout from Benoit. There's no moral to take forward from a single isolated event that has never, ever happened in pro wrestling before and hopefully never will again. Okay, the promotional material for the movie seems to be leaning towards it being a story about the damages of concussions, and yes, concussions are getting studied at a higher profile than ever before, but that was pretty much coming anyway with all the scrutiny on headshots in pro sports. Plus, concussions weren't the initial story about Benoit, steroids and overprescribed medications were. Even today, years after the fact, there is still debate over what the real cause of his meltdown was, and we'll probably never have the definitive answers. As for pro wrestling in general, it was tarnished forever by the Benoit saga, which is saying something for an industry that is generally considered scummy by even those who watch it. So, we're looking at a terribly depressing movie about a formerly beloved wrestler who killed his wife, kid, and self, ruining the business he spent his life in beyond full repair, and…that's it. Oh, and no one actually involved in his life will be named or shown on screen, at least if they ever want to be involved with WWE again. And you thought WWE made bad movies.
- Skip Sheffield reportedly returned at house shows this weekend. When he comes back to TV, he should wear a Nexus t-shirt and wonder aloud "Where did everyone go?"
- WWE has filed for a trademark for "Boots To Asses", because getting people to refer to female genitalia as "pie" wasn't enough proof that The Rock can make any stupid catchphrase in the universe popular. Strange that they didn't also file for "Cena's Lady Parts", but maybe that's coming next week.
- There's still some confusion as to whether the Royal Rumble will be the traditional 30-man match or the 40-man one that debuted last year. I'd expect 30, because without having Nexus around to eat up the entire first half of the match by standing around in the ring, what's WWE Creative supposed to script for that part, actually interesting angles involving in-ring action?
- Apparently someone stole JBL's scooter when he left it at the Bermuda airport. Well, that should teach him that just because you're fabulously wealthy, doesn't mean valet parking exists everywhere you go.
1. Roddy Piper
He may be crazy, but you can't sell Piper short on passion, and he said a lot of things about Cena that have needed to be said for a long time. Of course, Cena totally no-sold the whole damned thing, but that's why some people hate him. Piper gets extra points for his behaviour at the live Smackdown Christmas party.
2. Randy Orton
He's so overpowering, he took out David Otunga with nothing but an empty box! Good to see Orton having fun during the Miracle on 34th Street Fight, he almost looked like a human being, with emotions and all, for a second.
3. Sheamus
When he turned face, I had one demand: keep him the hell away from the leprechaun. They just couldn't resist. Ah well, I guess I can take solace in the fact that Sheamus tore through 90% of the Smackdown roster in that battle royal. I can't believe he managed to fight off the combined assault of Tyler Reks, Heath Slater, Jinder Mahal, and Hunico! But seriously, this man needs something more important to do, and fast.
4. CM Punk
Still the WWE Champion, and yes, I was worried, but his insane charisma almost makes up for the total black hole of suck created when Johnny Ace and David Otunga are in a room together. As a man with an English degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, I can tell you after seeing those two attempting to plot against Punk that "anti-charisma" is totally a real word.
5. The Miz
Miz gets to put John Morrison out of WWE and re-affirm his path back to the main event, this time as a slightly imbalanced stone-cold killer. I'd be unsurprised to see Miz vs Punk at WrestleMania. Or at least the Royal Rumble.
6. Bobby Roode
So, why wasn't he this incredible heel the first time, back when he was the incredibly rich Robert Roode? Was Traci Brooks leeching away his awesome like some sort of succubus? Or was it just that he stopped trying after the 15th week of his feud with Eric Young?
7. Dolph Ziggler
It's almost like they added Jack Swagger to Vicki's group so that Ziggler just wouldn't have to lose anymore. Impressive victory over Orton on Monday night, and Orton can't blame the interference, it's not like it stopped him from winning on Tuesday.
8. Daniel Bryan
Did not win the title, but that match might be the turning point in the American Dragon's WWE career, whether it leads to a face underdog run, or him snapping and going heel. I'm good with either.
9. Kofi Kingston
Hey, he got a win on Smackdown! You know, usually you punish the guy who gets suspended, not his tag partner.
10. Hornswoggle
Well, at least we won't have to put up with him babbling incoherently anymore. Although that may be a small victory after a while.

There should be a bronze statue of Benoit outside of Madison Square Garden. What he did outside of the ring is no ones business.

make like Tim Tebow and just win, baby
No. Just...no. You do not use Al Davis' most famous line to describe a DENVER BRONCO! Good column otherwise

A Serbian Film didn't have a happy ending but it was a great family film.

Benoit will always be a hero. I really do not care what any movie has to say. He was a multiple world champion and a member of the 4 horsemen. I'm not sure if Benoit did it or not but if he did I think he should be forgiven considering what he did in the ring.

"Yes, someone thought this was a good idea that will make money, because why else would you try and make a movie?"
Why wouldn't it be a good idea? It was a huge story and it made worldwide headlines. They made a movie about the guy who invented windshield wipers. The Benoit story wouldn't be more interesting than that?
"First of all, what's your target audience for this movie?"
If the movie is good, the entire world is the target audience.
"Non-wrestling fans aren't going to go and see a movie like this"
You mean like how non-wrestling fans didn't see The Wrestler and it massively failed and didn't resurrect Mickey Rourke's career?
"Thirdly, what kind of ending does a movie like that have? There's absolutely nothing uplifting about the fallout from Benoit."
Yeah, like the Titanic sinking and all those people dying was so depressing that NOBODY saw that movie.

WWE is the only place that matters in the business. in TNA wrestling doesnt even really matter. WWE is for winners. TNA is for losers..

Cena is gonna turn heel. its obvious. almost everyone is booing him anyways so with that and cm punk being the top guy and top merch seller why not have cena turn heel? its gonna happen, maybe at WM28..

piggie james is a terrible country singer. and miss tessmacher is a horse face. i hate the knockout division. all the women in TNA must be jealous at girls like Kelly kelly who get to be on magazine covers like maxium magazine and they cant. one of the TNA knockout girls was rejected by playboy in favor for the mom from the simpsons. pathetic..

how in the hell is hulk hogan not in the power ranking?
and benoit was a great wrestler and what the guys family life is like is not of any interest as long as they entertain.

"Is there a giant worldwide Kevin Nash fanclub that I don't know about that somehow has the purchasing power to make Vince pay attention?"
No, there isn't. But I heard a rumor once that Kevin Nash and Triple H have been real-life best since the mid-'90s. Do you think maybe that explains it?
Posted By: Capt. Obvious (Guest) on December 05, 2011 at 02:42 AM
I hope Nash wins the Royal Rumble this year. And I think if you were a member of the four horsemen your allowed to murder 2 family members. At least that is how it should be.

Original Randy and Zombie Benoit, those were pathetic attempts at trolling. Try harder.
Posted By: Finn (Guest) on December 05, 2011 at 03:56 AM
Benoit's movie won't be a doc, but an actual movie...big difference. Also "boots to asses" isn't even clost Rock's worst catchphrase.
Posted By: Mark (Guest) on December 05, 2011 at 04:57 AM
To the writer of this column: if the pop "Diesel" got at the Rumble was just "decent" for you then stop writing about wrestling and go buying this book: "Are You Cleaning Your Ears Correctly?". It's a good one for people like you.

You mean like how non-wrestling fans didn't see The Wrestler and it massively failed and didn't resurrect Mickey Rourke's career?
Look back a bit, there, jackass. Rourke's career took quite a resurrection from Sin City quite a bit before the Wrestler. Did the Wrestler help Rourke's career? Without a doubt. Did the Wrestler resurrect Rourke's career? No. He got a big jump from other movies before the Wrestler came around.
Yeah, like the Titanic sinking and all those people dying was so depressing that NOBODY saw that movie.
Comparing Titanic to the Benoit story is simply idiotic. First and foremost, it's been almost a century since the Titanic sank. The Benoit stuff happened four years ago. The Titanic was seen as an almost global tragedy. Sure, for a little while the Benoit case brought wrestling into the forefront of the news, but most people either simply forgot or didn't care anymore after a while.
To put it plainly, what I'm trying to say is your comparisons have no real basis here. You have no idea what you're talking about, and the next time you want to voice your opinion would be the perfect time to keep it to yourself.
Posted By: Guest#6078 (Guest) on December 05, 2011 at 06:01 AM
Benoit movie is just a horrible idea, dreadful. Hey wwe fans have fun using TNA's crappy castoffs Kevin Nash and Booker T.
Posted By: Guest#5824 (Guest) on December 05, 2011 at 07:22 AM
First of all, what's your target audience for this movie?

I'm going with people who go to Nascar to see a horrific wreck. Oh, also people who go to see Jeff or Matt Hardy for, well ok they go to see a horrific wreck there too.

i would buy a ticket to the benoit movie if it meant benoit would get into the hall of fame. silly with guys like koko and jim ross are in but benoit is out because of political correctness.

I think Kevin Nash needs one last 8-month run with the title before he rides into the sunset.
Posted By: HHH (Guest) on December 05, 2011 at 09:07 AM
It shouldn't be a big deal when they make a movie about Benoit. They make movies about murderers & serial killers, wars, much worse than a legendary wrestler who had one to many concussions causing his brain to get fucked up to kill his son & wife. Get over it IWC.
Posted By: Ryan Haseldine (Guest) on December 05, 2011 at 09:34 AM
Lots of "coulda woulda shoulda" from the sympathize-with-the-child-murderer-side. None of that gets rid of the fact that he is a child murderer.

This is to the people who believe that Chris Benoit should be forgiven because of his great in ring work. That is one of the most stupid things I've ever read. Benoit was a wrestler, it was his JOB. If a policeman comes home today and slaughters his family are you gonna say that he should be forgiven cos he arrested loads of bad guys? No, you're not.

I don't have an issue with a Benoit movie necessarily, but Ring of Hell is a poorly-sourced, sensationalistic piece of garbage. I have an issue with a Benoit movie based on that.

Titanic was sold as an enduring love story. Sappy soundtrack. Epic visual effects. Cute guy Leo DiCaprio. Kate Winslet's tits. The story of the boat itself was secondary.
It ended with the old lady tossing that big diamond into the ocean because she "never let go." We're probably not going to get a sentimental Celine Dion tune at the end of the Benoit movie.

A Benoit film could tell an important story, but only as a serious documentary that tells the damage these guys go through without demonising the wrestlers themselves. At least with other "tragedy" stories in fiction there is an explanation. The WTC stuff could have been seen as too early, but they went with the legitimate "hero" angle showing bravery in extreme circumstances. Titanic as mentioned was a love story first. What benefit would a fictional re-telling of Benoit's story would there be to anyone or anything?

I like your idea for Skip Sheffield, I remember when Steiner did the same kind of thing when the Main Event Mafia was no more and he refused to accept it, pretty funny stuff

Naturally, we'll just ignore the fact that "How's Your Lips?" went absolutely nowhere.

I am fine with the Nash-HHH match being pushed back. The logical progression would be for Nash to challenge Punk for the title first. No, I'm not joking. Punk has no available challengers at the moment except possibly Miz and he is only just starting to be built back up.
Nash and Punk obviously should still have issues with each other and want a match. They were never resolved and Nash did mention in a promo that he could be world champ at any time. His whole deal is that he still thinks he should be the top guy. So it makes sense on every level. HHH finally makes his return and costs Nash the title match. They feud and Punk goes on to face Miz/Del Rio/Jericho/Cena whoever.

I don't like this idea at all. Having HHH cause Nash to lose the match with Punk indicates that Nash was probably going to win. Then when HHH takes care of Nash you now have two retiries going over Punk. Thus making your champ look like a chump.
Having Nash face Punk works out best only if Punk hands Nash his ass. Nash isn't like Cena or Del Rio. He is not in Punk's class, not a full time worker and doesn't deserve a ppv payday in the first place.

I hear they're eying Kurt Angle for the role of Chris Benoit in this movie. Angle is reportedly thinking about it.

The greatest wrestler of all time, Kevin 'I need cash' Nash, should be put into a feud with Daniel Bryan so he can bury that vanilla midget all the way back to that indy fed no one watches.
Nash can turn up and powerbomb him a few times, then when it comes time for DBryan to get his revenge at PPV, Nash can have his knee injuries flare up the poor guy and miss the show.

For fuck sakes, they have made films about 9/11, and in my opinion, that is far worse than what to happened with the whole Benoit tragedy.
I would hope they would focus more on the wrestling, drug use and etc than the actual murders. I would go see it. I'm sure there are many out there who are still benoit fans like myself that want to put this behind him, and induct him in the Hall of Fame, or at least give him recognition for what he did IN the ring, not OUT.

I was a huge Chris Benoit fan at one time, but a million five-star matches doesn't make up for killing your wife and son, period.

Yeah, like the Titanic sinking and all those people dying was so depressing that NOBODY saw that movie.

-------------------------
Get Kate Winslet's Tits into the Benoit movie and I'll buy a ticket!!!!

"WWE has filed for a trademark for "Boots To Asses", because getting people to refer to female genitalia as "pie" wasn't enough proof that The Rock can make any stupid catchphrase in the universe popular."
Naturally, we'll just ignore the fact that "How's Your Lips?" went absolutely nowhere.

And naturally, everyone will ignore your tired, stale trolling which got boring years ago. Seriously, don't have you anything better to do that post the same series of anti-Rock/Cole/PG comments over and over again? Try getting a life and going outside for once, you pathetic piece of shit.

Stephen, I hope you aren't drinking the same Kool-aid as Al Gore is shoveling out over here. Just because you didn't get snow by now after one year means nothing in the grand scale of things. Hell we had nearly two feet of snow all around the Northeast in OCTOBER! We usually don't get touched until November or December with anything significant.
And in case you missed it, Climategate 2.0 happened in late November when they found more evidence of the "climate change" crowd screwing with the numbers and then conspiring to get people fired and discredited who wouldn't follow "the cause"
Hide the decline...in scientific integrity and standards! You'll get your snow soon enough.
