411’s Wrestler of the Week 1.16.12: Year Seven, Week 42
Posted by Jeremy Thomas on 01.16.2012
Brodus Clay made his debut, Chris Jericho continued his return, Primo and Epico won the WWE Tag Team Titles and much more, but who was 411's Wrestler of the Week? Find out by checking out the full article!
Welcome to Week 42, Year SEVEN, of 411's Wrestler of the Week. A quick overview of the rules to kick things off for us as a reminder…
Each writer chooses FIVE wrestlers from any promotion and each wrestler gets a point total attached to that ranking. It looks a little like this…
Then we tally up the votes and the official 411 Wrestler of the Week is crowned. But wait, there's more! Each week the top SIX vote getters get a points value for their ranking which looks something like this…
1st - 15
2nd - 12
3rd - 9
4th - 6
5th - 3
6th - 1
...and they go towards the 411 Wrestler of the Year award to be announced each year around WrestleMania. This will be posted every Monday. Let's see who wins this week…
Jeremy Thomas
1) Daniel Bryan
D-Bry's assumed heel turn gets more and more solid with each week. What's more, he's taken on the Big Show multiple times now and walked away with his title. I didn't honestly expect that and I'm happy to see it.
2) Brodus Clay: I hate the Funkasaurus gimmick. I really do. But Clay played it up and if it works (BIG if), that'll be thanks to him the same way Cody got his gimmick over.
3) Primo and Epico: And your NEW WWE Tag Team Champions...
4) Chris Jericho
5) James Storm
Greg DeMarco
1) Brodus Clay
"After weeks of anticipation..." Brodus made his return to RAW, and did so in amazing fashion. He was given a gimmick that has divided the IWC, and he's but 100% of himself into it. No one got more people talking this week.
2) Primo & Epico: They got the big WWE Tag Team Championship win! On a house show... Well, they still won the belts, and they still have Rosa.
3) James Storm: Got the clean win over Kurt Angle, apparently winning the feud and moving into the main event program with Bobby Roode (& Jeff Hardy?). Good to see him getting the push.
4) Chris Jericho
5) Cody Rhodes
TJ Hawke
1) Brodus Clay, THE FUNKASAURUS REX!
The Funkasaurus Rex has finally arrived to save the wrestling world!
2) BxB Hulk/Akira Tozawa: Successfully retained the Twin Gate Titles in Dragon Gate Japan against Masaaki Mochizuki & Masato Yoshino
3) James Storm: Defeated Kurt Angle to earn a TNA World Title Shot
4) Johnny Gargano/Sami Callihan
5) Epico/Primo
Wes Kirk
1) James Storm
With his performances at both Impact and Genesis, James Storm continues to impress with his ascent into the main event and by defeating Angle on Thursday night, he earns himself the #1 contender position to go for his second and hopefully longer championship run. I expect Jeff Hardy to be involved for a month or so longer but afterwards it will likely be Storm/Roode in time for Lockdown!
2) Robert Roode: As the new chicken heel champion of TNA, Roode has been doing all the things to make people hate him that we once saw practiced by such classic heel champions as The Honky Tonk Man and Ric Flair. Roode is getting people's attention and they are despising his new character, which of course is the entire point as he's given up all his dignity and integrity to retain his title, not even win, at any cost.
3) Kurt Angle: He had a mixed bag this week in a big victory at Genesis but then a big loss on Thursday's Impact to the same man, James Storm. Angle continues to look good and provide great matches against seemingly everybody while also training for the Olympics later this year to repeat his 1996 gold medal victory. What a guy!
4) CM Punk
5) Dolph Ziggler
Ryan Byers
1) BxB Hulk & Akira Tozawa
The US was pretty quiet this week, so I turn to Japan, where the biggest result in the past seven days has been BxB Hulk and Akira Tozawa defeating Masaaki Mochizuki and Masato Yoshino to retain the Open the Twin Tag Tag Team Titles in Dragon Gate. This isn't just a run of the mill title defense. Tozawa is a guy who is still ascending to be part of the upper echelon in DG, while BxB Hulk has been around for a while but it still reestablishing himself after he did a "losing streak" gimmick a few months ago. The fact that they beat Mochizuki and Yoshino, who are two of the most recent former world champs for the company and had MASSIVE years in 2010 and 2011, respectively, shows that the company is behind Hulk and Tozawa in a big way in 2012.
2) Epico & Primo: The Colon cousins became WWE Tag Team Champions this week in a rare house show title change. Why this happened remains to be seen, but it is good news for Epico and Primo regardless.
3) Daniel Bryan: Your World Heavyweight Champion had another great week, with a squash match victory over half of the Tag Team Champions, another surprisingly good match with the Big Show, and another series of awesome performances leading up to his heel turn.
4) Jimmy Susumu
5) Kane
Steve Cook
1) The Funkasaurus
Whether you liked the gimmick or not, Brodus Clay's return to Raw & Smackdown was the most-talked about story of the week. For weeks, the anticipation for Brodus's debut had been building, and we didn't see his new gimmick coming. It'll be interesting to see how it goes over in the long run.
2) Epico & Primo: We have new WWE Tag Team Champions, as the Colons defeated Air Boom in Oakland to win the titles. Hopefully these guys will learn from Carlito's mistakes and run with the ball now that it's been given to them.
3) Daniel Bryan/Big Show: Non-finishes don't usually work in main events these days, but these guys did a great job putting over AJ needing to be carried out. Big Show in tears while Bryan was berating him was a good moment and did the job in making Show come off sympathetic against a man more than a foot shorter than him.
4) James Storm
5) Sami Callihan
Chad Nevett
1) Primo & Epico
Ah, the rare house show title change... This pair have brought back good memories of the early days of Carlito and Primo where Carlito seemed to care. I was a big fan of that tag team and I've really liked what I've seen from these two. I'm glad the titles are on them now.
2) Brodus Clay: Two squashes matches for the re-debut of the newly-dubbed Funkasaurus. No one expected this, but it's pretty damn entertaining.
3) Johnny Gargano: Successfully defended the Open the Freedom Gate title this weekend at EVOLVE 10.
4) Chris Jericho
5) Daniel Bryan

For all the complaining that we direct toward the WWE...for both of our "indy darlings" to have the top two spots on a list based on weekly accomplishments...Vince and Co. have actually given us quite the refreshing year. I think we will look back at 2011 as an extremely important and satisfying time in the world of WWE.

There were six times more people watching the NJPW Tokyo Dome show in the arena than watch most TNA PPVs on PPV. It was ignored because, even though you had to pay for it, it was an insignificant show.

You picked a tag team from a Japanesse indie. The show had maybe 500 people there. You couldnt even go one week without being a hypocrite. If you honestly think a Japanesse indie is bigger than the second biggest promotion in U.S then you must have head trauma. I'm not a big TNA fan, but constantly ignoring them is bitter and elitist. At least Wes votes for WWE guys.

really, another week where roode has a good title match and doesnt get a spot...
411 clearly doesnt want him to win!!!
if he wasnt snubbed so many times, he'd clearly be in 2nd closing on cm punk!!!
sorry, but d. brian & r. roode should have easily been 1 & 2!
no one cares about wwe tag titles, their a joke, and theirs no reason for jericho to be on the list!
both roode and brian defended world titles, that should be more important thn everything else!
im really curious how joe even won a WOTY!
this site is clearly bias!!! anti tna, anti anything not wwe!!!
everyone knows aj styles should have easily won last year, and this year roode, punk and brian should all be nearly tied in a close fight, while all others should be a good 20 pts behind all 3 of them...
THIS COLUMN IS A JOKE!!!

To say that Daniel "zero charisma" Bryan has had a better overall year than Mark Henry just goes to show the complete bias of this site.

Wow, the comments should be interesting for this one... shee-wah!
Could Primo be the second guy who's had his career saved by Z True Long Island Story? When ZTLIS started to really take off, Primo was regularly doing funny bits on the show (Optimus Primo FTW) and tagging/feuding with Ryder on Superstars. Fast forward six months and both buys are wearing gold.

It's amazing how high up the list Roode is, considering at least one writer refuses to vote for TNA no matter what, and most of the others try to give it as little credit as possible.
Posted By: Guest#9538 (Guest) on January 16, 2012 at 07:41 PM
Robert Roode??? James Storm??? Who are these guys? Isn't Kurt Angle retired? This is WRESTLER of the week. Let's keep it to wrestlers that people have heard of, not somethign that some little troll wants to try and get over.
But the proof is in the pudding: the WWE wins wrestler of the week! Shows the trolls input means zero!! WWE is number 1!
Posted By: elvylanda (Guest) on January 16, 2012 at 08:01 PM
Good selections, Byers aside you can't fault any of the choices. Shame Storm isn't higher though, he's had a hell of a year.

He retained thanks to Bully Ray in a match that technically never ended because there was no bell at the end. I'm just saying that it could have been a better retain of the title(even though DB retained the same way in a no DQ match which is even worse). I will say that I would have him top 5.
Posted By: Still Guest#8287 (Guest) on January 16, 2012 at 08:15 PM
Look at my boy D-Bryan sneaking his way into second place. If he keeps this slow burn going with his heel turn he could take the whole thing this year.

Actually, Dragon Gate isn't an indy. By several measures of business, it's the second largest promotion in Japan these days, behind NJPW.
And there were 1,500 people in attendance for this weekend's DG show, which is slightly larger than a capacity crowd in the Impact Zone.
Posted By: Ryan Bias (Registered) on January 16, 2012 at 10:31 PM
Roode retains his title twice (with some help)and gets no votes.
Brodus Clay has the worst gimmick ever and if he debuted it in TNA, this site would take a massive shit on it. And he is a low card comedy act to boot, yet he is WOTW.
Wes Kirk is the fairest voter of them all here and yet he is considered the troll, unbelieveable

The 'Funkasaurus' is Wrestler of the Week? For what? Because he's a big fat guy who likes to get "funky"? Seriously?
Bobby Roode, TNA World Heavyweight Champion, defends his title in a stellar 15 minute match against Jeff Hardy, with the obvious screwjob ending, yet he gets no mention.
Daniel Bryan, bless his soul, competes in a less than 10 minute match, where he got in literaly no offense, even with the open use of weapons, against The Big Show, in a title defense that was only stopped when Big Show "ran down his girlfriend", yet HE gets "kudos for his efforts."
Winning championships, in my book, merit a mention, so I have no qualm with Primo/Epico, even with how the WWE has so deliberately devalued their tag team wrestling, but that's another conversation.
Successful title defenses, especially in competitive showdowns, are worth mention as well.
Still, when a crew of "writers" go so far out of their way, to deny someone the recognition that they've earned, it really does expose the clearcut bias on this site.
WWE's product has been trash for so long that the fools here are now openly arguing against sanity, to defend the junk.
TNA's been on a roll, for the better part of 5 months, and it's about time they get some recognition. The tag team wrestling has definitely taken a slide, especially with The Guns being on the shelf for so long.
Still, the main event scene, for the forseeable future, is going to be carried by Roode, Storm,Angle, Hardy, and AJ Styles, the X division is getting strong exposure on TV, the Knockouts have a renewed focus, and the TV program has been actually fun to watch, with the PPVs continuing to deliver on the very wrestling that folks seem to want to "demand" they see.
Need to get over yourselves

Bigger than WWE. Hahahahahahahaha, good one. WWE has been the biggest wrestling company since the 70s. Japanese wrestling shouldn't be taken seriously. None of them can make it in American companies because they lack charisma and are basically spot monkeys or big stiff brawlers.
