Wrestling's 4R's 1.23.12: Smackdown, IMPACT & Superstars Reviewed
Posted by Larry Csonka on 01.23.2012
Daniel Bryan once again walked away with the World Heavyweight Title, Robert Roode tried to take out his title challengers and more! Wrestling's 4R's breaks down the Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous of Smackdown, iMPACT and Superstars!
How the 4R's of wRestling Work! Here is a quick explanation of the 4R's. The column will run TWO times a week. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come, unless you are TNA. They have a special R all of their own, the 6th R; the Russo-FN-Riffic~! Of course, that may not happen much any more due to him not having as much power as he used to. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a "mark" column, nor a "smark" column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.
Let's rock…

TNA Impact Wrestling 1.19.12: QUICK RESULTS:
*Gunner pinned AJ Styles following a DDT in 4:44 [***]
*Crimson pinned Magnus with the Red Sky in 1:30 [*1/2]
*Mickie James pinned Madison Rayne with a DDT at 12:22 in a Steel Cage Match [***]
* Eric Young fought Angelina Young to an apparent no-contest in 1:51 [-*]
*James Storm fought Jeff Hardy to an apparent no-contest at 13:57 of a #1 Contender Match[***1/2]
THE RIGHT: Opening Promo: Good work from James Storm, great work from Jeff Hardy, awesome work from Bobby Roode and good work from Sting. This promo set the stage for the main event, advanced storylines, focused on characters and got me excited for the rest of the show. Mission accomplished!
The AJ Styles, Kazarian & Christopher Daniels Saga: I wonder where this is going. And I want to see where this is going. Thus, it is working. AJ didn't get any answers out of Kazarian, but Kaz did reveal that there are answers to be had. Daniels is implicating the answer being Kazarian's distaste for AJ's current success level. Is that true? Only time (or spoilers) will tell.
Garett Bischoff video: I am in the total minority here, but I absolutely loved the training video for Garett Bischoff. Yes, it was corny and cheesy, but it allowed Garett to be more than a son mad at his evil father.
Madison Rayne vs. Mickie James in a Steel Cage: I think this was a good use of the steel cage gimmick. I think it hasn't been used properly by the WWE in recent months. We don't need a cage match at the Royal Rumble between Daniel Bryan, Mark Henry & The Big Show. We should have had Booker T vs. Cody Rhodes in a cage match in a Smackdown main event to blow off their feud. That is how you use a cage match in 2012. TNA's cage match told a good story, had good wrestling and put the right person over.
Austin Aries backstage promo: Only Austin Aries can talk about talking about what he's going to talk about and make it 100% entertaining. He's fast growing from class of the X-Division to one of the best performers TNA has in any division.
Austin Aries & Alex Shelley promo: Yes, it deserves a separate entry. This is a rarity in the X-Division these days—a feud between two guys who are already way over with the TNA audience. That allowed them to kick things into high gear right away, and we should see some good movement in this feud over the next few weeks.
James Storm vs. Jeff Hardy: While I don't like James Storm, the #1 Contender, having to wrestle Jeff Hardy for the right to be the #1 Contender, this match was still great. The finish made perfect sense, as Bully Ray's desires to be world champion are so questionable—is he genuine or just helping Bobby Roode? If TNA is building to a 4-way at Against All Odds, then they are providing us with a great build.
PURGATORY: Gunner vs. AJ Styles – The Match & The Finish: For the first four minutes, Gunner vs. AJ Styles was a great match that made both men look good. The finish and aftermath? That leaves me sort of wanting more (the Kaz-Daniels-AJ story) and sort of groaning (AJ running away like a pansy).
Magnus backstage promo w/Crimson interruption: So the heel Magnus is cutting a great promo about his match with Crimson that furthers the Magnus/Samoa Joe-Matt Morgan/Crimson feud, only to be interrupted by the face Crimson who said nothing of value and very little that didn't need to be censored out. Yeah...
Magnus vs. Crimson: The match itself was a total bomb. Magnus controlled what little of a match we had, and Crimson pulled his finisher out of nowhere for the win. He might as well start using the Diamond Cutter. But the post-match attack on Crimson & Morgan made me happy. I really hope we get a Joe/Magnus title run out of this, because they impress me more each week.
THE WRONG: Angelina Love backstage promo: TNA has always had a habit of making their referees look like morons. Now they're trying to extend that to their talent. Angelina Love cuts a promo completely focused on the fact that Eric Young touching her was gross. So what is her solution? To enter the one situation where they are required to touch each other—a wrestling match. Makes sense to me!
Eric Young backstage promos: First, Eric Young wants to wrestle a caterer who has either been with TNA for 5 or 10 years (she wasn't sure). Later, ODB pretty much promises a roll in the sack if he beats Angelina Love.
THE RIDICULOUS: Angelina Love vs. Eric Young: Eric Young's act is getting old. I would be very happy if they fed him to Gunner and put him on the shelf for a while. This match? Stupid. Young spends 99% of the match trying to wrestle the referee. Angelina Love gives him a low blow, and it's not a DQ? Okay, sure!
The 411
Once again, I remained spoiler free . And spoiler free is a much better way to watch these shows. TNA put out yet another good edition of Impact Wrestling. It had its low moments, but the high points were also the most important parts of the program. The World Championship angle is on the upswing, the X-Division Championship angle is on the upswing, the Knockouts Championship angle is on the upswing and the Tag Team Championship angle is on the upswing. The good far outweighs the bad in TNA.
SHOW RATING: 7

WWE Smackdown 1.20.12:
Good ol Guest#7635 has a thought:
I think D Bryan added a dose of Napoleon/little man complex to his character. He says he's a fighting champ because he's sick of being labelled a midget."
I can definitely see that in Bryan, but I think there's much more too it. Typically, the little man complex is anything but. Bryan's go as a heel is much more fruitful and organic. While the announcers sell the story that the title has changed Bryan, you can still see folds of his former character within, it's just marred by people pissing him off. This, of course, coincides with your sentiment, but as I said, I feel they've added a bit more depth and I love it.
The Big Fat F*g didn't share the same views on racism within Rhodes promo from last week: I'm hispanic and I didn't find Rhodes promo racist whatsoever. He ways playing up to the fact that he'd be the greatest IC champ ever. The arriba was in reference to Tito Santana. Cancel your call to the PC police.
Make no mistake, I didn't find it worthy of calling any type of PC police. I'm all for stirring the fans the wrong way, I simply felt it wasn't needed for Rhodes character and it didn't fit. We never saw him do something like this before, as he typically insults they way people look, not so much their race. As for the arriba, I was well aware of the reference, and that worked, I was more so talking about the awkwardness from a character standpoint. If JBL comes out and disses Texas, it makes sense. Rhodes, not so much.
MPMoore speaks out on the Divas Division: The fact that Nattie is jobbing out to absolute trash weeky is disturbing.
I don't care what she said/did/fucked/whatever.
She is so much better than most of the roster.
She should be the face challenging Beth's heel persona, or at least vice versa.
Instead we get dangerous workers (Tamina and Fox) and dreadfully boring, unbelievable ones (Kelly and Eve).
Poor divas division.
While I won't disagree with your suggestions, I feel that it's much more if a problem than just who she said/did/fucked/whatever. The facts are that not enough people within WWE care about the Divas Division to make that shame. All the work that Finlay may have put in, disappeared along with him, and we are now left with those dangerous workers. It feels like they just throw shit on the wall to see what sticks, and some Divas...are more sticky. hehe..
QUICK RESULTS
- Cody Rhodes Defeated Justin Gabriel [**1/2]
- Primo and Epico Defeated The Usos [**]
- Wade Barrett Defeated Sheamus [**1/2]
- Ted DiBiase Defeated Hunico [*1/2]
- Santino Defeated Drew McIntyre [1/2*]
- Daniel Bryan vs. Mark Henry went to a No Contest [ **1/2]
THE RIGHT: CHAMPION OPENS: Bryan starts the show off once again, and he is just utterly disappointed in The Big Show's actions last week. He continues to play up how Show did what he did on purpose, and not accidentally while at the same time, continues to be a dick. The crowd is fully behind the heel turn, as they booed him pretty solidly. True, it's Smackdown, and you can never really know when these cheers are real or not, but I feel they are genuine. I have come to the realization that there will not be some grand turn but rather, this is Bryan as a heel. It was a slow transgression, but it was a fun trip and now we got the greatness that is Pompous Bryan. His retort to the exclamation of love from AJ was great, as he has "a great admiration for her as well." Sure, I may be jealous at the fact that AJ has nuzzled his beard on more than one occasion, but it makes for good story telling, so I'll let it slide. I also have to give credit where it's due and say thanks to Cole for not getting behind Bryan right away, considering the disdain they share with one another. It's important.
RHODES VS GABRIEL: I was immediately bothered the moment Rhodes chose Hornswoggle, because I saw the possibility for him to be stuped by the midget man who seems to have a better record than half the roster. Thankfully, this went right out the window when - of all people - Justin Gabriel came out to the defense of Lil Man Horny. This all makes sense, considering Gabriel helped out Swoggle last week and has sort of been his impromptu bodyguard as of late. This is also huge for Gabriel because in one match, he was elevated. I loved how Rhodes yelled out "Non-Title" before the match and enjoyed the match in general. It was short, and that was an issue of the night for some reason, but it was good considering the time. Gabriel looked competent and the right man won, obviously. Gabriel may very well have a future, and I hope he sticks around this position of the card, considering he's shown that he's more than one note.
TAG TEAM ACTION: A freakin Tornado Match!! I can't recall the last time I saw one of these bad boys! Again, the length of the match kind of hurt it, but what we got, I enjoyed. The Usos started off with some double team action, including an homage to Kishi with the butt splashes in the corner. I like how they took the joviality of their father and turned it into a bit more of a serious approach in the ring. Of course, Rosa is the selling point of the Epico and Primo tandem, so she got involved in true heel fashion, causing the distraction and allowing the Ricans to get the win. I find Rosa's excessive Spanish and yelling on the outside to be annoying, but in a good way. Her nuisance is supposed to be prevalent, and it is, without being overbearing. It also doesn't hurt that she's kind of hot.
TABLE FOR TWO: Good ol Sheamus and Gooder Ol Barrett have resurrected their mini-feud and continue to bring the thunder in terms of ground and pound offense. This time, the added factor of a table brought about some fun, even though the match was short. It's interesting to note that both men have been relatively successful in Tables Matches in the past, something that they sort of played up on in the announcing. The match wasn't amazing, but I blame that on the time. It was fun, and it was centered on the Rumble. Simply put, each of these guys think they are going to win the Rumble and will continue to fight each other just to prove it. Barrett getting the win is yet another thing he can brag about atop of the Orton destruction, which should lead to some interesting moments coming up considering Orton is coming back next week. There is one piece of this little segment I didn't like that we'll get to later.
SIRI, CALL MOM: What a beautiful display of hilarity! Hearing Vickie scream and seeing her do the ever-famous Elaine Dance are equally grating to the senses, but having Brodus Clay attempt to find his footing whilst acting like a dinosaur is something I would pay for, and considering we've put money into this product numerous times, we have paid for it. One thing I wasn't expecting, however, was William F'n Regal coming out to cut a rug! This was just a lot of fun, and considering the show as a whole was a Vegas themed romp, it was perfectly okay. The Funkasaurus Fat Man continues to bring in the fans as I continue to enjoy it.
LUMBERJACK RUMBLE: I'm not big on Lumberjack matches at all. There are far too many variables that I don't enjoy, including the fact that heels and faces have a distinct divide - which seems cheesy - while at the same time, intermingling with those very divides. That, amongst the fact that they're just kind of dumb, bug me. With all that being said, Bryan used the Lumberjack Match idea to a great advantage. He continually goaded everyone into anger, pissing them off with little prods and pokes of arrogance, only for them to eventually hop into the ring and try to attack. Of course, a rumble of sorts ensued, and we got a preview of what next week will look like, with all the bodies in the ring. The match was rough to watch, considering Bryan got no offense. This is the second time this has happened between Henry and Bryan and while I don't want Henry to just get beat soundly, I would have loved to see Bryan get a bit more action in. Of course, he's heeling it up, so the complaint isn't all that big, and like I said, he used the gimmick of the match to perfection.
PURGATORY: HUNICO AND DIBIASE: I hear DiBiase got injured recently, so this may very well not matter all that much, but I'm very uninterested in this feud. I think the matches could be good, and Hunico is pretty enjoyable in the ring, when they allow him some time. But, I don't find this feud between the two to be enjoyable. I think Hunico is a stereotypical character that won't last and is extremely one-note. I think Ted is trying really hard to reinvent and push himself, but it's not working. I still find myself uninterested in either as a solo act as well as against each other. I do want to give a small applaud to the ring crew who made it seem believable that this was not predetermined (for an example of the opposite, see the Cobra blindfold).
BLIND AS A COBRA: Santino is hilarious, so I can't rightfully put this in the wRong. But for reasons I'll get into, this doesn't deserve to be in the right, that's for damned sure. I'm not sure what they are doing with Drew, but I can only hope it benefits him, and shortly. As for the match itself, it was a blindfold match, what more can we expect, right? The cobra having a little blindfold was cute, but took away from the "not-knowing" of the match type. Also, I hear most snakes are blind - or at least color blind, so it made me wonder about the validity of that. Then again, that's me just digging a bit too deep rather than enjoying the spectacle. I mean, come on, it's Santino in there.
THE WRONG: JINDER MAHAL: I've said that I could give a fuck less about this guy before, and I'll say it again, but I do want to point out that I am well aware there are others who may like the guy. What I don't understand, then, is the fact that if they are going to push him (and I still hold that he doesn't deserve it), then they are doing a horrible job at it. Firstly, he is way out of his league when in the ring with Sheamus as we have seen before. Secondly, he's yet to get the upper hand and continues to look like a weak jobber in comparison. I don't want him to be pushed, I don't think he deserves it, but if they are going to do it then they may want to get on the boat with him fully rather than just have him waste time and tables.
THE RIDICULOUS:
NOTHING
The 411
This was a pretty strong show from where I sit, however there were some issues, and a lot of that has to do with the timing. There was potential for some good to great matches on the blue show, but they were stuck on the "good" level due to the minimal amount of time they were given. This truly stuns me considering there were two MORE matches last week than there were this week. All in all, a good show that could have been better, but most certainly did its part.
SHOW RATING: 7.5
As a reminder, I will be going by the 411 scale..
0 - 0.9: Torture 1 - 1.9: Extremely Horrendous 2 - 2.9: Very Bad 3 - 3.9: Bad 4 - 4.9: Poor 5 - 5.9: Not So Good 6 - 6.9: Average 7 - 7.9: Good 8 - 8.9: Very Good 9 - 9.9: Amazing 10: Virtually Perfect
THE RIGHT: TAMINA vs. NATALYA: Our first match of the night saw this battle of the Divas between Natalya and Tamina, which as the announcers pointed out was the continuation of a mini-feud between them. I'm happy to see the two of these ladies get any TV time at all, though I will always question why the company likes making Nattie the new Victoria of the division. She is the best wrestler in the division who has the worst win-loss record and that's something I didn't understand with either lady. Both Victoria and Nattie were very marketable and attractive women who had far better skills and could be/have been put over as the faces of the division or at least perennial contenders, but it has just never happened. That frustration aired, this was a pretty good match between the two, who got a good amount of time to work and get the crowd invested. They wrestled a decent technical affair and kept me invested throughout. The crowd could have been a bit more into it, but when the promotion has trained the crowd not to care about two people there is only so much that talent can do. This was a good example and I won't penalize the ladies too much for the lack of crowd reaction. Decent Superstar starter.
PURGATORY:
SANTINO MARELLA & MASON RYAN vs. CURT HAWKINS & TYLER REKS: Okay, so either I haven't been paying enough attention to Santino or he JUST started wearing a cobra arm sleeve. Either way, I love it; it's goofy as hell but in a really fun way. Santino and Ryan is a bizarre matchup but I wouldn't put anything past working where Santino's concerned as he's made some of the dumbest shit thrown his way work...though admittedly, not everything. I've been pretty up front about my opinion of Ryan's lack of skill and Hawkins and Reks are certainly far from great, so I was hoping for "short comedy match" at best. Sadly we did not get a short comedy match, but it wasn't bad either. In fact, I'll go so far as to say it's one of the better matches involving Ryan that I've seen in a while. Santino did some good selling of the heels' offense to dominate the middle portion of the match and put them over a bit before the inevitable loss. This kept Ryan from having to be in the ring too long and have his issues as a worker exposed. Santino got the cobra-fueled win, which made me feel bad for Hawkins and Reks, who have been trying to get some momentum established as a regular team to no avail. This wasn't what I would call a "good" match but it wasn't terrible and was definitely better than I expected for a match with these guys.
THE WRONG: ALEX RILEY vs. JINDER MAHAL: Ahh, Jinder. Jinder, Jinder, Jinder. Why oh why must we continue to see you in a non-jobbing position? I'm serious, this guy is Daivari without the actual talent; he's the guy who is only over because of the foreign heel heat and any other non-American would work just as well in that role. Many of those other people have ring and mic skills too. But no, instead we get Jinder because someone doesn't want to admit that they made a mistake by bringing Mahal up and investing TV time on developing him. I'm no enormous Riley fan but the guy is way better than Jinder and this was just a bad match. It was slow and methodical not because of any intentional pace but because Mahal doesn't know any other pace. The booking was vaguely okay but the ring work wasn't good and I just flat-out didn't like this.
THE RIDICULOUS: NADA
The 411
One good, one okay and one bad, that basically sums up Superstars. As the show went on the quality dipped lower, which is great in that you don't have to search for individual matches and can just stop after the tag match. This was a skippable episode of Superstars--frankly, most of them are--but not a total waste of time, even if I think all the wrong people won their matches.
SHOW RATING: 6.0
As a reminder, I will be going by the 411 scale..

i love how D bryan is calling himself the best in the world now on smackdown. while angle is getting up there in age and isn't as good as he used to be and cm punk and jericho being more better with their mic work and charisma than their wrestling i think d bryan is the best wrestler in the world. and D bryan aint that bad on the mic either and has shown charisma while his slow heel turn. D bryan is for sure a better all around wrestler than davey richards thats for sure.. Daniel bryan is epic as a heel.

BOYCOTT TNA!!! and i loved that sign on raw that said FREE RVD. yeah TNA, FREE RVD and let him go to a great company like WWE. WWE RATINGS > TNA RATINGS. AND TNA is ruining ring ka king already. and how come WWE lets CM Punk say whatever he wants but when foley was in TNA he said something TNA didn't like so TNA fired him. freedom of speech is what WWE cares about, unlike TNA. and TNA fans are losers. WWE fans are the one's that get what the deal is.

"The crowd could have been a bit more into it, but when the promotion has trained the crowd not to care about two people there is only so much that talent can do."
Or the crowd didn't think the match was that good.

@ Tony Acero
Fear not, I think Jinder Mahal isn't really 'getting a push' as much as he's a prop for Wade Barrett's character. Barrett hit the scene as leader of Nexus, a Uppercard seeking Rogue with a band of goon henchmen. Again, he assembled the poorly booked Corre, he was a mid-card guy but had his goons. As a solo act, he kinda floundered, I think someone in creative saw him as the Bare-knuckle bully w/ his stooges.
What else can you do with new televised talent w/ no future? ... make them a Barrett goon. Fits Wade's character, might give the rookie some experience & who knows he might learn something, if not, Wade has a quick battle with Jinder (after Jinder has had his ass handed to him by Orton & Sheamus, before their PPV battle w/ Barrett) & Jinder is back to jobber & future endeavored!
Wade is a prick Batman villan, & Batman villians always have henchmen! I'd rather see Jinder flesh out Barrett's character than have a storyline with Dibiase.

Wow Demarco, you almost have me interested enough to try Impact again after about a 5 year hiatus, kudos to you.
However, I'll disagree with your notion that the Bryan/Henry/Show triple threat shouldn't be a steel cage. Since my boy D-Bry got the title, he first defended it with the 'accidently/on purpose' DQ and since then the stipulations have grown increasingly difficult with Bryan weaseling away with the title each time. In the cage he'll be 'forced' to fight Henry and Show, but will likely end with Henry and Show decimating each other while Bryan walks out of the cage with the title. Not a bad way for Bryan to get more heat on his heel run.
Say what you will, but I think Orton will win the Rumble, defend his 'main event' spot against Barrett to blow off their feud at the Elimination Chamber, and Orton/Bryan will be a GREAT wrestlemania match, regardless of the winner.
Posted By: BJ316 (Guest) on January 23, 2012 at 02:58 AM
We don't need a cage match at the Royal Rumble between Daniel Bryan, Mark Henry & The Big Show.
---------------------------------
I think this is a fine time for a cage match between these three. The only reason Bryan has walked away with the belt the last three weeks is because of a DQ, his girlfriend being run over, and him running away from a brawl. None of that can save him now. He has to beat the two monsters or find a way to run away and out of the cage. I think this fits great in the story line.

"It feels like they just throw shit on the wall to see what sticks, and some Divas...are more sticky. hehe.."
Very good, sir.
About Bryan, he perfected his heel persona in the indies, especially RoH. The 'E had to start him as a face to gain fan sympathy and give the general viewer a bit of time to know who he is. Couple with the 'smark' following and he was going down this road regardless. He has the ability to be a Jericho-esque heel with a little Angle mixed in. As long as they let him ride it out, he will be not only a top heel on SD! for the foreseeable future, but also the show stealer in the vein of a Jericho or Michaels.
He's could be that good, he just needs to be allowed to be.

It looks like Mickie James is becoming Impact's go to wrestler for cage matches. She had a great one with Tara soon after coming to Impact, and she just had another good one with Madison. Kudos to Mickie for the good, hard work. (And kudos to Madison for that ass.)
I'm really looking forward to the Aries/Shelley program. Shelley is definitely a cut above anyone else Aries has faced since returning to TNA. This one should be good.
Maybe Angelina's promo wasn't the greatest, but at least we're seeing her as something other than Winter's sidekick. It's good to see her getting off the back burner.
I think Eric Young is a good performer who is being wasted, both in this angle with ODB and in general, the whole detached from reality thing. I do wish they'd get him off TV for a bit, then bring him back in a better gimmick. I don't mind him being the comedy relief (although I think he's capable of much more) but this current angle is so bad, it's making Super Eric look good.
Finally, to guest 4421: what are you, a ten year old tea bagger? Your post is one of the stupidest ever on this site, and that is saying something. Is your enjoyment of WWE diminished because other people watch Impact? If so, you are truly pathetic. If not, what difference does it make to you if people watch Impact? Do you own stock in WWE? No, I didn't think so. You're just one of these idiots who's been brainwashed into thinking there is some kind of principle at stake here. There isn't. There's just the fact that some people prefer one fed, some the other, and some watch both. There's plenty of room for more than one wrestling promotion. Grow up, dummy.

Regarding the comment onthe blindfold match and "not knowin"
McIntyre spun the wheel himself if I am not mistaken, pretty sure the wheel landing on a "blindfold match" gave them a clue to what the match was, even if the stereotype is that wrestlers are not that smart
Posted By: MPJ (Guest) on January 23, 2012 at 02:39 PM
To MPMoore, what exactly makes Tamia a dangerous worker? To me, she's one of the few who doesn't botch or anything. Honestly, she barely even wrestles. You saw her most recent match with Kelly Kelly? She tried her best to make KK's awful uncoordinated slow offense look good. Felt like HBK wrestling a broomstick.

Re: Angelina Love
How does someone go from being the face of the Knockouts to being a sidekick jobber?
Answer: Put her in a lame ghost/vampire/zombie angle and then forget about the whole thing without any resolution.
