The Piledriver Report 01.26.12: A Clear Road to WrestleMania
Posted by Ronny Sarnecky on 01.26.2012

The WWE's official "Road to WrestleMania" begins this Sunday night in St. Louis, MO at the 2012 Royal Rumble. By this time of the year, everyone has a pretty good idea of what the main event of WrestleMania will be. The Royal Rumble is the event that usually cements that direction. Not this year though. For the first time in the history of the WWE's biggest show of the year, the WWE announced the main event of the next WrestleMania a whole year in advance. There is no guess work as to what wrestlers will headline WrestleMania XXVIII. That honor belongs to The Rock and John Cena.

THE TITLE MATCHES

With the WrestleMania main event set in stone, the WWE needs to focus on the undercard. The Royal Rumble will be the first step in determining who goes to WrestleMania XXVIII. The winner of the Royal Rumble battle royal will go on to face a World Champion at WrestleMania. Right now, the rumors surrounding the two World title matches have Randy Orton challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship, and Chris Jericho battling for the WWE World title. While only one of these men can win the Royal Rumble, the other will probably win a match at the Elimination Chamber pay per view, which is the second major avenue on the "Road to WrestleMania."

Looking at the WWE landscape, and reading the news reports, it's pretty much a lock that the man that Chris Jericho will face in the WWE World championship match at WrestleMania is CM Punk. Even if CM Punk loses the WWE World title to Dolph Ziggler at the Royal Rumble, he can always win the belt back at the Elimination Chamber pay per view, or any of the upcoming episodes of RAW before the WrestleMania card gets completed.

The bigger question revolves around who Randy Orton will face for the World Heavyweight championship on the show. This Sunday night will go a long way towards answering the question. Months ago, according to the rumors, Randy Orton was scheduled to win the Royal Rumble, and then regain the World title from the man that he lost the belt to, Mark Henry. Daniel Bryan was only scheduled to have a short title reign. A reign that would end before WrestleMania XXVIII. However, something unexpected has happened with Daniel Bryan. Instead of booking him as a weak champion, the WWE has pushed Daniel Bryan as a legitimate title holder. Combine that with his subtle heel turn that is getting over with the fans, and the WWE has caught lighting in a bottle. Bryan deserves to hold the World Heavyweight title heading into WrestleMania. Besides his recent performances, Daniel Bryan has two more things going in his favor. First, an Orton/Bryan match at WrestleMania has the chance to steal the show, and give the fans a classic WrestleMania moment. Secondly, Randy Orton has gone on record stating that Mark Henry is his least favorite performer to work with. Why put him in the ring against a guy that he isn't comfortable with on the biggest show of the year? You want a WrestleMania classic, not a WrestleMania stinker. If I had to put odds on who would go on to face Randy Orton at WrestleMania, I would have to go with Daniel Bryan. He is very over right now. Bryan is having a great run. Not to mention that we have already seen Randy Orton and Mark Henry square off numerous times. A Daniel Bryan/Randy Orton match would be something new and fresh. A match between the two would help make WrestleMania feel special. This Sunday, at the Royal Rumble, we will have a good idea on who will be defending the World title at WrestleMania.

THE DEADMAN PLAYS THE GAME: PART THREE

The match that is probably the worst kept secret for this year's WrestleMania is another bout that was penciled in since last year's event. Though not officially announced, like The Rock vs. John Cena, the Undertaker vs. Triple H III has been in the cards for the 28th WrestleMania show. This year's re-rematch is scheduled to be refereed by the "Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels. The build-up will be that the deck will be stacked against the Undertaker. Michaels is Triple H's best friend, and he is still anger of being forced to retire thanks to losing to the dead man at WrestleMania XXVI. That's a nice little side note to the match. Shawn Michaels' role, combined with Triple H pushing the Undertaker to the brink at last year's show, give this match some great kayfabe reasons for their battle to be among the most anticipated on the show. The fact that both men work well together, and pulled off a really good match last year, will make this a must see WrestleMania match for the hardcore audience.

SHAQ DIESEL

Within the last month, there have been reports that Shaquille O'Neal is scheduled to face the Big Show at this year's WrestleMania. To most observers, this is a "filler" celebrity match. After all, by the time WrestleMania hits in April, both the Big Show and Shaq will each be 40 years old. Even though O'Neal was a world class professional basketball player for most of his life, forty years old isn't the ideal time to train for and have your first professional wrestling match. The odds are that the match will be below average, and that's putting it nicely. That being said, I am really looking forward to seeing this match. Shaq is a big wrestling fan, so you know that he is going to try really hard to do his best. Plus, he has a huge personality, so his segments leading up to WrestleMania should be entertaining. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just blinded by the fact that Shaq is my favorite basketball player of all-time. Either way, I'm looking forward to the WWE's latest "Battle of the Giants."

WRESTLEMANIA IS MONEY

One of the WrestleMania traditions over the past several years has been the Money in the Bank ladder match. Every year, you knew that you'd be treated to an action-filled stunt fest of a match. Unfortunately, over the last two years, the WWE decided to remove one of the best aspects of WrestleMania, and give the match it's own pay per view. Thanks to the CM Punk/John Cena match, Daniel Bryan shocking the world to win the SmackDown! Money in the Bank briefcase, and the fantastic Chicago crowd, the 2011 Money in the Bank pay per view gave us, not only the best pay per view of 2011, but arguably the best "B" show pay per view in WWE history. Despite the awesomeness of that pay per view, WrestleMania has really missed having a Money in the Bank match. There has yet to be a bad Money in the Bank pay per view match. WrestleMania is supposed to be the grandest pay per view of them all. The event is supposed to have the best matches. Money in the Bank deserves a spot on that stage. After a two year absence, the WWE is rumored to be putting the match back on the WrestleMania card. I couldn't be happier. Besides the Money in the Bank match being a good match, having the match at WrestleMania always leaves the possibility of the winner cashing the briefcase in later that night to create the ultimate WrestleMania moment.

This should leave three additional matches for the show. You figure that there will be a women's match, a tag team encounter, and another low level singles match. Looking at the card as it is rumored to be thus far, and this appears to be one of the better WrestleMania cards in the event's history. And, I didn't even bring up The Rock vs. John Cena. WrestleMania XXVIII is about nine weeks away. Nine weeks until these rumored matches become a reality. I can't wait.

Other than the obvious:

Rock v Cena
Punk (c) v Jericho
Bryan (c) v Orton

I'm hoping the other matches are:

Swagger (c) v Ryder
Rhodes (c) v Goldust
Kane v Christian
Dolph v Foley (Hardcore Match)
Barrett v Sheamus
Epico & Primo v Kofi & Yoshi

Well based on the latest rumors the card is going to be,

John Cena Vs The Rock
The Undertaker .Vs Chris Jericho
CM Punk .Vs Triple H-WWE Title

and with those three matches set I would book the rest of the show with.

Daniel Bryan .Vs Sheamus-World Title

Big Show and Shaq .Vs Mark Henry and Kane

Randy Orton .Vs Wade Barrett

Mick Foley .Vs Dolph Ziggler-Hardcore Match

Cody Rhodes .Vs Goldust-IC Title

MITB

and if enough time I would throw in a diva's match of Beth Phoenix .Vs Natalya for the Diva's title or a tag match with those two go up against a returning Lita and Trish Stratus.

MitB at Mania is overkill. Although they no longer have any MitB holders running around it greatly devalues the concept if you have 2 or 3 times to compete in it. It's the modern day equivalent of the King of the Ring. Nowadays MitB elevates one 'experimental' guy and then one 'sure thing/more or less proven'. Danielson/Del Rio, Miz/Kane. As much as i'd love to see a return, it just cheapens the concept if it has to be cashed in before MitB PPV.
Shaq vs Show should be closer to Mayweather vs Show. I want Shaq to be a crazy delusional heel and think he actually has magic SHAZZAM powers and knows SHAQ-FU.
Taker should fight a NEW guy. He's done enough working with already established guys. I'd love for him to fight Barrett, Swagger, Ziggler, or Danielson. ANYBODY that isn't a rehash.

Kane vs Zack Ryder

Posted By: login (Guest)  on January 26, 2012 at 05:16 AM

For some reason I feel like Sheamus will win RR and Orton will get the belt back at Elimination Chamber. With that in mind, my card looks like this:

The Rock v. John Cena,
CM Punk v. Chris Jericho,
Randy Orton v. Sheamus,
Shaq v. Big Show,
Cody Rhodes v. Golddust,
Dolph Ziggler v. Mick Foley,
Undertaker v. HHH,
Zack Ryder v. Kane,
a tag-team title match, maybe,
and either an interpromotional fatal-fourway for the US title or MITB, w/ the likes of Jack Swagger, Alberto Del Rio, Daniel Bryan, Christian, Wade Barrett, The Miz, R-Truth, and/or Drew McIntyre.

IF Undertaker had a couple of years left in his career I'd be happy for 'Taker/HHH III. Sadly he doesn't so they need to forget this one. I've said it before and I'll say it again. 'Takers streak has to be broken and it has to be broken by an up and comer to push them through the stratospher. I'm thinking Sheamus or Barret.

Here's what I'm hoping for:

Primo & Epico v ---- Gauntlet match to get everyone on the roster on the show with several different combos

Wade Barrett V Randy Orton "Falls Count Anywhere" (Keep Orton's RR return short and have a "re-injury" then build this up for Mania)

Fatal 4 way for the DIVA's title

Dustin Rhodes V Golddust (IC Title)

Undertaker V Sheamus (have Sheamus go over ending the streak and solidifying him)

US Title - Swagger V Ryder (keep him off tv until a few weeks before Mania with his "injury" and build up Swagger as a legit champion)

WHC - Daniel Bryan V Kofi Kingston (trust me on this it could work!)

Shaq V Big Show

WWE Title - CM Punk V Jericho

Rock V Cena.

Good card dude. Could see that happening fo sure. Maybe have Barret in MITB but yeh, good stuff.

Chris Jericho will come in #30 at the Rumble and win without doing anything. All 29 other men would have already been eliminated and he will just walk in, win and celebrate.
He will then be the last "mystery" participant at MITB and just enter when all the guys hit a big spot and are laid out. Jericho will just climb the ladder and win it.
He would have already won his World Championship match against Bryan. Punk will go over whomever he is facing but laid out, Jericho cashes in.
Jericho will repeat the whole beating Austin and Rock in one night, this time he will beat Punk and Bryan ("The Best in the World" to become, once again, the undesputed world champion.
The end of the world (title) as we know it!

How about someone else winning in Jericho's place? Someone whom you'd never give a change, like Santino?
Just to live up to the whole "anything can happen, anyone can win". This will make the Rumble legit and less predictable each coming year as any Joe has a chance.

I got it! Jericho enters and gets eliminated. Conspiracy theory Jericho complains about it!
Later, #28 and #29 are in the ring and both go over the top. #30 comes in, SURPRISE! It's the return of PAUL FREAKIN ROMA! He is celebrating on his way down to the ring...BAMMMMM!
Sneak atack by Jericho, takes him out, Paul is dead. Jericho comes in, the bell rings, Jericho wins!

Good article. There's still quite a few guys that have to get worked onto the card though. Miz, Sheamus, Barrett, Del Rio, Ziggler, Rhodes and Henry have been in the spotlight all year and I'm sure WWE wants to feature them on a PPV that has more people watching than normal.

That's why I could see the Money in the Bank coming back too. Too many of their everyday, week-to-week workers are going to be left without a match with all these special attractions on the card.

I still don't want Orton to win the Rumble. I hate it when anyone wins a yearly event twice. With the exception of CM Punk and the MITB

Posted By: Guest#3016 (Guest)  on January 26, 2012 at 01:55 PM

if undertaker wrestles at Wrestlemania. there's a good chance Kane will interfere. that may be the idea behind bringing him back as a heel anyway. I;m not sure brodus clay is anyway near ready for appearing on a wrestlemania stage. and i wouldn't be surprise if shaq comes to WWE as a heel instead of a face.

You were wrong before and you are wrong now! The Streak NEVER deseves to be broken! It is his legacy. No one is worthy to break The Streak - not even Cena. Nope, whomever The Undertaker faces at WM, he will be 20-0!

If it is HHH, I don't think the stipulation will be HBK as ref, it will be HHH's career on the line and Taker will retire him. Sforcina(sp) I believe mentioned that and I agree.

The reality is NOBODY(except maybe .0001% like you) wants to see Undertaker LOSE at Wrestlemania! If it happened midcard the crowd would never recover and at the end, you would just have silence and it would be horrible.

The way I would like to see it (and thus most likely won't, or even close...) I have nime matches for a four hour show, it looks good on paper.

Cena vs Rock
CM Punk vs Triple H (it would explain why H beat Punk)
Jericho vs Taker(Jericho could set a slow pace and make it good still)
Daniel Bryan vs Orton (Mark who?)
Mick Foley vs Ziggler (of course)
Cody vs Goldust
Some Big Show Shaq combination tag match
Christian vs Miz (Future guy match)
Ryder vs Kane

Undertaker vs MAnkind > HHH

Posted By: Guest#5522 (Guest)  on January 26, 2012 at 05:15 PM

Rock vs Cena- WWF title, this might not need the championship, but the Rock winning his last championship in his hometown be a sweet story.

Punk vs Jericho- WH title Who really is the best in the world

Undertaker vs Bryan Danielson- Surprised no one mentioned this as a possibility. A match with Bryan could bring back memories of Taker's best matches with Bret, Kurt, and HBK.

Dolph vs HHH- I think this could be a great passing of the torch match.

Rey vs Sin Cara- Obvious reasons.

Beth vs Natalya-As above

MITB- Orton,Evan,Kofi,sheamus,Truth,Miz, Henry,Barret

Big show vs Shaq

There you have it the best WM since X-seven. And no HHH vs Taker III, 2 was fine but there is nothing more these two can do that hasn't been done already.

Oh forgot to mention Ryder vs Kane above sorry

Posted By: Guest#5116 (Guest)  on January 26, 2012 at 05:33 PM

Cena vs Rock
World Heavyweight Title Match: Daniel Bryan vs Randy Orton
WWE Championship Match: CM Punk vs Chris Jericho
Big Show/Shaq vs Mark Henry/Wade Barrett
Undertaker vs Triple H: Taker confirmed to be retiring, if Triple H loses he retires too.
Mick Foley/R-Truth/Zack Ryder/Brodus Clay vs Miz/Dolph Ziggler/Jack Swagger/David Otunga w/John Laurinaitis: If the heels win Foley must leave the WWE, If the faces win Laurinaitis is no longer the Raw GM
Money in the Bank: Sheamus vs Cody Rhodes vs Kofi Kingston vs Drew Mcintyre vs Santino vs Kane

Actually, let me make an edit there:

Remove Zack Ryder and David Otunga from the 8 man tag. Remove Kane from MitB. Have Wade Barrett and Drew Mcintyre switch places.

Add:
Zack Ryder vs Kane: no holds barred.
Diva's Championsip Match: Beth Phoenix vs Eve vs Alicia Fox vs Kelly Kelly.

The Rock v John Cena

WWE Championship
CM Punk v Chris Jericho
RR winner Chris Jericho states that he came back to WWE in 2012 because he feels that he is the only person worthy of being the final WWE champion of all time, revealing that he is a nutjob that believes the world is going to end in December(play on his Millenium arrival Y2J in'99). Punk takes it as a joke, until he sees how crazy Jericho really can be.

World Heavyweight Championship
Daniel Bryan v Randy Orton v Wade Barrett v Shaemus
After surviving RR in a cage w Show & Henry and getting the lucky draw in the Chamber as the final entrant, D-Bry starts to gain confidence more and more. The 3 challangers each lay claim as #1 contender by talking up their own merits. Teddy Long makes a triple threat match for SmackDown, but after chaotic events he makes this a Fatal 4 Way at WrestleMania XXVIII

The Undertaker v Dolph Ziggler
Failing to take the belt off of Punk at Royal Rumble, Ziggler is sidetracked by weird things happening each week on RAW, until Undertaker returns to handpick his 20th challanger to the Grand Daddy of them all.

Big Show v Shaq- Mr Laurenitis tells the Raw audience that Shaq is who he has been texting this whole time, to be a guest on Raw sometime in March. That night Big Show and O'Neill have an encounter that makes Shaq want this match.

Divas Championship
Beth Phoenix v Natalya
Beths loyal partner wins a Divas battle royal and plays it cool that she just won by luck. Beth gets paranoid that Natty has planned this all along and takes the first shot ending their partnership.

Kane v Ryder
Ryder comes back from injury far too early but wants to make a name for himself by being too tough to quit.

The Miz v R-Truth

US Championship
Jack Swagger v Kofi Kingston

Intercontinental Championship
Cody Rhodes w/ Dusty Rhodes v Ted DiBiase w/ Dustin Runnels
Goldust eliminates Cody at the Rumble, pissing Cody off to no end. Cody blames his family for ruining the Rhodes name, with Dustys polka dots and Goldusts freakshow routine for the last 16yrs. With Dusty in his corner, Goldust and Cody brawl at the Feb PPV, with Cody Pilmanizing his brothers leg and his father joining him on the beatdown. Goldust loses the makeup and comes out on crutches as Dustin Runnels and recruits someone to finish his business. DiBiase gets in Codys face about their past, but at Mania Dustin gives Cody a crutch to keep his IC belt by DQ and all 3 Rhodes boys stand tall.
Tag Team Championship
Brodus Clay & Dude Love v The Colons

WHC C. Daniel Bryan Vs Randy Orton
Big Show Vs Shaquille O'Neal
WWE C. CM Punk Vs Chris Jericho

Rock Vs John Cena

Woman's Championship
Glamazon v Trish Stratus
