The Wrestling 5&1 5.26.12: Christy vs. Kaitlyn!

May 26, 2012 | Posted by Greg De Marco

Let’s do this… BRING ON THE GIRLS!

Listen to Brian Kendrick while you read!

Last Week: After 1,1844 votes were cast, Eve Torres had her run stopped by that pesky AJ Lee!

AJ’s quest is on hold, as is Christy Hemme’s. Wait, what’s going on with the Hall of Bang?

You might notice that I moved Velvet Sky up to the top row. Those four look like they belong in the hall. And they do—they each dominated nearly every vote they were in (Maryse I cannot speak to, she was the lone member when I took over this column from Larry). The bottom three entered after some close calls. And with the new inclusion of the poll voting, I’m left to wonder if they belong at all.

So I’ve decided that each member of the Bottom Three must defend her spot. And it starts this week, with Kaitlyn. If Kaitlyn wins, she stays in. If not, she goes back into the pool of potential contestants and will get another shot. It’s up to you.

This Week: Kaitlyn is the first contestant in our Heatwave Challenge. Her opponent is none other than current Versus contender (and former three time winner) Christy Hemme!

Kaitlyn!

Christy Hemme!

The Choice Is Yours!

KAITLYN vs.. CHRISTY HEMME
Take your pick and vote in the poll below!

216. The number of cumulative days that CM Punk has been WWE Champion, all within the past 12 months.

213. The number of days that Bobby Roode has been the TNA World Heavyweight Champion, all within the past 12 months.

In the current era of wrestling, long championship reigns are becoming cool again. And we have these guys to thank for it. TNA X-Division Champion Austin Aries is a longer reigning champion than both at 258 days, and TNA Knockouts Champion Gail Kim isn’t far off at 195 days.

But Bobby Roode and CM Punk are the alpha dogs in their present companies. Yes, Sheamus is the World Heavyweight Champion, but he appears to have fallen off a bit since winning the championship. In fact, the man he beat in 18 seconds at WrestleMania 28 is arguably in a better position than the Celtic Warrior (or Great White, if you must) at this point. Roode is carrying TNA, a point that Hulk Hogan is putting over on television. Punk’s reign has cemented him as the guy while John Cena is stuck in creative purgatory for the time being.

But they didn’t start out like a John Cena—not at all.

CM Punk was, as he puts it, a Paul Heyman guy. I’m sure they’ve had a great conversation or three backstage since Heyman’s return. Here’s the thing about being a Heyman guy. Heyman leaves and you’re no one’s guy. Dave Lagana has written about creative’s support of CM Punk and how many ideas got shot down, and how Shawn Michaels saved Punk’s push. Punk doesn’t look like a “face of the company guy.” Yet one famous promo last summer and he’s there. He “walked out” as champion, made a scene at the San Diego Comic Con, and returned as quickly as he exited. In doing so, he was elevated to elite status.

Bobby Roode was just another guy in Team Canada. Sure, had tag title reigns, but Petey Williams was the star of the bunch. And Eric Young broke out first. Bobby Roode did end up with a singles push as Robert Roode. Remember “It Pays to be Roode”? They teased a big name manager for Roode, and he ended up with Traci Brooks. And that ended in a feud with Ms. Payton Banks (Rain). Then came Beer Money. Even that… everyone saw James Storm as the breakout star, not Roode. Roode wins the Bound For Glory Series, but doesn’t beat Kurt Angle at Bound For Glory itself. The week prior, Hulk Hogan is quoted as saying “Bobby’s not the guy” while putting over Jeff Hardy as the guy. James Storm wins the title first, and everyone goes nuts for it. But then Roode gets desperate and turns heel—leading the “Selfish Generation” and becoming World Heavyweight Champion. He cheated to win—or sometimes just to love & retain. But he’s slowly building into a credible champion. Most heel reigns start off with a legit tone and the champion slowly becomes desperate. But as Hulk Hogan has said, they did Roode’s reign in reverse. He’s now winning matches like a champion. He’s becoming dominant. And honestly, there is no end in sight.

CM Punk retained his championship at WrestleMania 28, defeating one of the most beloved superstars around in Chris Jericho. After ending the feud at Extreme Rules, it was hard to see what he’d do next. Thankfully the WWE paired him with Daniel Bryan, 2012’s fastest shooting star. They recently introduced a new wrinkle with AJ—Punk “kinda digs crazy chicks.” As a feud, the sky is the limit with Punk & Bryan.

Bobby Roode recently overcame James Storm, and followed that up with a ladder match victory over Rob Van Dam at Sacrifice. As TNA builds Slammiversary, they have potential challengers in AJ Styles, Kurt Angle, Jeff Hardy, Bully Ray, Mr. Anderson and now Sting. They could easily bring back The King of The Mountain Match with those guys. They won’t, but they could.

WWE Champion CM Punk and TNA World Heavyweight Champion Bobby Roode are on top of the world. They’re the top champions in their respective companies, they’re both at the top of their game, and there really is no end in sight for either. In a world where championship belts are props and toys, two men have made them important again. Bobby Roode and CM Punk.

You Decide: Are Punk & Roode a great pair to sit atop the wrestling world?

It’s a debate that tends to come up from time to time, and it occasionally features other wrestlers as well (most notably “Stone Cold” Steve Austin—more about that in a moment). Which is better: Diamond Dallas Page’s Diamond Cutter, Randy Orton’s RKO, or Johnny (Laurinaitis) Ace’s Ace Crusher? Thankfully, there’s a YouTube video (at least one, likely many more) dedicated to this very topic.

Johnny Ace’s Ace Crusher
Johnny Ace invented the move, and popularized it in Japan. His style is very raw, but that fits in with the Japanese style at the time. His version of the move appears to be geared towards driving the opponent forward and head first into the match, a big variance against what’s seen in the other two. No matter what version of the move you prefer, you cannot deny that the innovator of the maneuver is in fact Johnny Ace.

Diamond Dallas Page’s Diamond Cutter
While Johnny Ace brought about the move’s popularity in Japan, it was DDP that brought it to prominence in the United States. And the move might be responsible for his career. DDP could hit the move from anywhere. Anywhere. Seriously, he could have taken Sting by surprise with a Diamond Cutter in the rafters when the lights went out. The night he faked joining The nWo just to shake Scott Hall’s hand and nail him with a Diamond Cutter is my favorite Monday Nitro moment ever. And the move was perfect for DDP. He was an “every-man,” with a finisher that nearly every man could hit, and it could be hit from everywhere.

Randy Orton’s RKO
The RKO used by Randy Orton is far closer to DDP’s Diamond Cutter than it is to Johnny Ace’s Ace Crusher (while all three variations are very similar in general). Much like Page, Orton has put his own spin on the move—and he’s taken it to another level. Orton jumps up into the RKO, making the move more visually impressive—while a little less believable. He’s hit it to counter many high flying moves (including a memorable springboard clothesline from CM Punk at WrestleMania 27 and Evan Bourne’s Shooting Star Press on RAW). And when the move isn’t hit out of surprise, it’s set-up by Orton’s trademark predator pose, pounding on the mat and slithering towards his opponent. DDP brought the move to prominence, but Orton modernized it.

Honorable Mention
Homicide’s Gringo Cutter is a secondary finisher at best, transitional move at worst. For Homicide finishers, it falls below the Cop Killa and the lariat. He dives into his variation like Orton, but tends to land like Ace. Bully Ray hits the Bubba Cutter, normally out of a press position. It’s nearly an identical copy of the Diamond Cutter, but Ray’s use is born out of his portion of the Dudley Death Drop.

What About The Stunner?
The Stone Cold Stunner, of course made popular by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, is not a cutter variation. The cutter is set to drive an opponent chin first into the mat. The Stunner is about the transfer of force from the man’s shoulder to his opponent’s chin. Mikey Whipwreck’s Whipper Snapper is the exact same thing as the Stunner—and neither move is a variation on the Ace Crusher/Cutter.

And The Winner Is…
Before I get to your vote, I want to share my winner. Please don’t let it influence your vote. Looking at all three, I have to say I appreciate what Johnny Ace accomplished by inventing a relatively safe move that made the Japanese fans happy in an era where you had to drop a man on his head to get over. And I love the way that Randy Orton has elevated the move to be a tremendous part of his Hall of Fame caliber career. But for me, the best variation of the move is Diamond Dallas Page’s Diamond Cutter. It can be credited with the success of Diamond Dallas Page himself, and could legitimately be hit from any position and always looked believable. For me, the Diamond Cutter will always be #1.

You Decide: Which do you prefer? The Ace Crusher, The Diamond Cutter, or the RKO? Vote below!

News broke earlier in the week (Thursday to be exact) about Chris Jericho being suspended indefinitely from the WWE for denigrating the Brazilian flag in their country.

Is it legit? Is it kayfabe? I’ll admit that it’s hard to tell in this one. It’s reported by PWInsider that the authorities were quite upset and wanted to take him into custody. The WWE originally suspended Jericho indefinitely, then followed up by announcing that it was for 30 days. Now, this amount of time just happens to coincide with his latest Fozzy tour. Convenient, eh?

I just can’t wrap my finger around it. Is this story legit? Was it a storyline reason to get him away for 30 days, but keep him heel? I have no clue. It’s so easy to go kayfabe here. Jericho is a heel, and the dates are so convenient. But this happened in Brazil, not in the US. If they make a big deal out of it on TV, then I can see this being kayfabed. It provided the Brazilian fans with a memorable moment, and gives Jericho a reason to leave. But I’m not sure that accomplishes anything in the long-run. The WWE is a global media company, and Vince McMahon’s own wife Linda McMahon is running for political office. I don’t see them scripting this with that going on.

Several former superstars have commented on Jericho’s actions.

Shawn Michaels:
“Wow, waking up to find twitter blaming me for an apparent suspension of @IAmJericho. Seems to me I’d blame the horrific PC world we’ve allowed ourselves to be caught up in where you can’t “act” & have it called “acting.” BS!! I’ll stand behind @IAmJericho any day of the week & twice on Sunday…what’s the big “E” stand for in WWE anyway!!. I honestly don’t see how many of you make it w/that much anger in your life…seems exhausting & a colossal waste of time!! See, that’s all I’ve got & I’m already tired!! Time to workout & hit my day. Y’all have a wonderful day!! 🙂

Had a nice txt’ing convo w/@IAmJericho and as always, he’s handling things well. Just wanted to lend him some support!! 🙂 “

Lance Storm:
“Thoughts on @IAmJericho He didn’t do anything that hasn’t been done a million times in wrestling. Wrong place & times change.”

John “Bradshaw” Layfield:
“After seeing reports of Chris Jericho in Brazil-it was what I suspected–Chris trying to entertain and be a heel. Apparently a Brazilian Flag comes into ring and Chris grabs it and kicks it (or something to that effect). Compare that to Sgt Slaughter burning the flag or all the crazy stuff that has gone on. This is nothing. EXCEPT we are in a new era and now that isn’t acceptable.

Chris did what most old heels would have done, he reacted and a decade ago it would have been loved for the heat. However, times change and we have to as well-Chris acknowledged this and apologized. Chris is a wonderful person and one of all time great entertainers-there was no malice here from what I see and know about Chris. A mistake was made and is being dealt with.

As far as being illegal, please, if done in an entertaining arena it is considered as such. Like saying you can prosecute Anthony Hopkins for cannibalism because of his role in ‘Silence of the Lambs’. I understand the arguements, I went through same thing in Germany and it was never considered a problem in Germany-only over the Internet and the Internet reporters. Chris’ intent was to entertain not insult anyone in Brazil or the great Brazilian fans.

Times change and for the better. Chris did what a ton of older heels would have done and he reacted. He is being punished and he apologized. He is one of all time greats and a great friend, old habits are hard to change but we must.

Times change and we have to change with it, and we all will.”

Jim Ross:
“It’s not like he was at a sporting event like soccer and disrespected the flag, but rules are rules and they have strict rules regarding the flag in their company… He’s playing a character, did an ad lib, and unfortunately he stepped over the line for the local culture, so he’s been suspended indefinitely and hopefully it will work out.”

It’s nice to see the support that Jericho is receiving. I do wonder what the reaction of the WWE would be if someone lower on the card did this. Let’s say…Jinder Mahal. Would he be released? Would he be suspended for 30-days?

It’s fun to claim that reports are wrong, but common sense comes into play. I think this one is legit. I think Jericho went out for heel heat and made a poor choice. He’ll serve his suspension, and when he returns he’ll be just as over—if not more.

You Decide:

From last week’s Wrestling 5&1…

No, you are not being paid.
Keep up the ‘minister, wife and kids’ image man! Don’t forget all the half naked women pictures…
Posted By: Guest#3184

See, the “paid” thing was the joke. Sorry to confuse you there, pal.

Now, I will address he half-naked pictures thing again. First off, first off, it’s a lay pastor. That means being a pastor among the people. Just like everyone else. The kind of guy that any guy can relate to. That’s the point. Second, take a look at my most recent pictures…

Here’s Lita from a few weeks ago:

Here’s Lita vs.. Brooke from the 24th edition, over a year earlier:

Very different picture selection, huh?

Now let’s finish the comparison and bring back Brooke from the Versus WrestleMania Challenge:

Atractive? Yes. But much more conservative in comparison, no?

You may not get it. That’s because you’re a moron.

If they was bringing back King of The Mountain at Slammiversary, that would’ve been a good opportunity to test Aries and make him one of the challengers in it. Have him score a pinfall in it and come close to hanging the belt only to be taken out and put through a table by someone like Bully. … If he does face AJ at Destination X, I think they could have a possible MOTY Candidate. When they locked up on Impact for a minute during the battle royal all eyes and attention was on them and they blocked and countered each other perfectly.
Posted By: Michael

Aries & AJ locked up in ROH, and delivered big time on several occasions. Even 6-7 years later, both men can still go. TNA has actually put themselves into position to go with King of the Mountain at Slammiversary, with Bobby Roode having any number of potential challengers. Based on last week alone, you could easily throw in Bully Ray, Jeff Hardy, Mr. Anderson, Rob Van Dam, Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe and Austin Aries into the mix.

“I don’t mind Garrett Bischoff to be honest”
Six months later, you still spell his name wrong.
Posted By: Guest#9893

Were you talking to me, genius? Because that wasn’t written by me.

For Destination X, they’ll bring back the Ultimate X no.1 contender match and probably the Fight for a contract match. I wouldn’t mind seeing former guys like Petey Williams, (Considering they can convince LLUSA to let him work it.) Elix Skipper, The Amazing Red, and other unknown guys (Those who were never part of the TNA roster) like El Generico and Jack Evans (getting another chance) compete in it. The Young Bucks aren’t doing anything in ROH, maybe they could coax them into making a special one night return and bill it as a one night only event Team Canada (Petey and EY) vs. Generation ME.
Posted By: Kevin

I’m pretty sure Petey Williams is done with LLUSA. Your suggestions all work for me. I don’t see The Young Bucks actually going back, they didn’t leave on the best terms. Generico would be a great get for TNA.

Not trying to troll . But huge face palm to this shit. I remember why I don’t click this one
Posted By: Jim Dimond

Some people don’t need to try to troll, it just happens for them. Jim is one of those trolls guys.

Over The Limit on paper could be a sleeper PPV, but expect something to drag it down like crazy.
Posted By: SS87

Well said, friend. Well said.

Where the fuck was Frisco Kid last week?
Posted By: Guest#4627

The trolls scared him off. Most people aren’t as good at working hard despite not being appreciated as I am.

AJ or Eve is like asking whether I like Petit Sirloin or T-Bone. I like them both. They both would make for a fine meal. But in the end, a T-Bone is a steak and a Petit Sirloin is a nice piece of meat.
Eve is a steak. AJ is a nice piece of meat.
Posted By: Guest#5396

So which one did you order?

– Styles vs. Aries for X title – the only possible main event.
– Kaz & Daniels vs. MCMG
– Joe vs. Kid Kash – two hard beating guys collide, i want to see that happen
– RVD vs. ??? – he always said he was X division before it was the X division, so.
– Ultimate X with Zema Ion vs. Alex Silva vs. ??? vs. ???
Other then that i can’t come up with anything good with TNA’s existing talent
Posted By: ermacermac

Everything here is fine. Except for the phrase “hard beating.” What the hell was that about?

Alright the Gabe section was not nearly as brutal as I was expecting after some of our conversations. You already know most of my opinions as a fan of wrestling, especially INDY wrestling because despite what ROH thinks they are still an Indy… an independent company who thinks they are bigger than every other non-big 2 company in the country and feel the need to sign their wrestlers to “contracts”. ROH didn’t start the war with Gabe when they fired him, they did it when they decided to block all talent from competing for DGUSA/Evolve and ROH. Davey Richards whose real life ego has been spun into a frenzy by Cary and other ROH management making him believe his own hype was at the start of a huge DGUSA push. Young Bucks, O’Reilly and Cole were all affected by the change as well. Gabe has a right to be upset and I still feel the comments are justified. Gabe has produced more than twice the amount of iPPVs. than ROH and you know how many of them have had issues? ONE, the feed started late and that was one of their first shows.

Gabe is the reason iPPV has become such a thing in the indy world and still no one does it better, let’s not forget the early shows were on GFL with little-to-no issues. He was smart enough from a legal stand point to not call out ROH by name he instead left that to his followers to make things clear. There is a saying that there is no such thing as bad press as long as people are talking about you and that is what he has done here, Gabe is being talked about and honestly I feel it can only help his 2 struggling companies.

It truly is a shame that the two companies can not share talent and even work together in some way as it only hurts the 40-50 guy on each roster giving them one less place to work and earn money.

One final thing… AJ 4 Life!

Posted By: GOAT Chad

What are these conversations you’re referring to? I don’t associate with you fools!

Bringing back an oldie, but a goodie…

I voted Eve but they are both RETARDED HOT. Good matchup between two different looking women as well.
Posted By: Guest#4590

What is retarded hot? I can’t even come up with a reply here!

I know it’s a work, but crazy chicks = crazy chick sex = phenomenal sex (until she spazzes and tries to kill you) … I pick AJ.
Posted By: Guest#5404

You and Tony Acero, friend. You and Tony.

More LeeAnne Marie!!! Also, more AJ who it’s a good thing you have the poll like that now instead of comments because I know I’d at least spam 20 votes for AJ!! … As for the Brooke Hogan hiring in TNA, it just shows how little they know what they’re doing letting Hulk Hogan make decisions like that (which you know is the case). Brooke was only ever famous for being Hulk’s daughter, and she’s not even famous for that anymore!! I think the only place she’s ever even mentioned anymore is this website, so you can forget about her hiring bringing in any viewers. If anything, showing her during the knockouts segments (consistently TNAs highest rated segments) might lose viewers because of her looking nowhere near as good as the Knockouts.
Posted By: The Truth

It’s Leanne, but she gets LeeAnne a lot. And here you go…

Leanne Marie as a blonde… a brunette… and an alien.

As usual, you can hear “The First Lady of the VOC Nation” Leanne Marie on the VOC Nation flagship radio show, and she can be booked through Wrestling Marx at wrestlingmarx.com. You can also hit her Facebook Fan Page and Twitter, where she posts multiple pics per day. You might also be hearing more of her on your very own Greg DeMarco Show, too…

As for your Brooke Hogan take, it is quite simple, isn’t it. You schooled us all, making you…

I am now a Nicole Matthews fan, thank u sir. Where have you been hiding Leanne Marie, she is fantastic, thank you again sir
Posted By: Ramone

Hopefully you’re now a Nicole Matthews fan due to her interview. Being beautiful is only one of her many talents. She was an awesome interview. As for Leanne Marie? The common internet wrestling columnist answer would be “in my basement,” but I don’t even have a basement!

Aries and Styles would be a dream match. The fact that Tenay mentioned that during the battle royal gives me hope that somebody actually realizes it, and will give the match, when it happens, the build and time it deserves. … I’ve noticed something. DeMarco always has a short or non-existent uncalled for section when I out predict him on a PPV. I didn’t predict the matches for Sacrifice, but I did say it would be a much better show than Greg and others were predicting. And I was right, TNA offered its viewers some really good wrestling that night. 8^)
Posted By: the ghost of Buddy Rogers

First point: Aries-Styles is a dream match for TNA. And they’ve changed enough to make it fresh. I hope Aries goes over, and if not, I hope it develops into a series. Second point: don’t flatter yourself!

Greg….where are the old school reps in the HoB? I know mentioning a certain “Crippler” is verbotten these days…but you WILL recall his wife DID have a pretty significant career LONG before she hooked up with him.
Posted By: CottonMouthWolf

That’s funny, because when I featured Miss Elizabeth, it was too weird for a lot of people. I’d suspect Nancy Benoit would get the same reaction.

And this gem comes from our repost of Rajah.com’s report about Dean Ambrose’s injury and the announcement of the final FCW tapings.

FCW Final TV taping huh? Almost like the WWE lied.
Someone alert Greg Demarco about his irresponsible journalism claim.
Posted By: Guest#5975

All I can do is “Batista laugh” at this guy. Or maybe I’ll “rovert” to my old ways, and point out that the report indicates that it’s the last taping. That’s due to NXT. It doesn’t say NXT is shutting down and moving to Connecticut. In fact, with the new Full Sail University taping schedule they’re obviously not leaving Florida.

But it’s cool. You’re very wrong and I won’t make too big of a deal about it. In the grand scheme of things, your egregious mis-formatting of my name is far worse. It’s DeMarco Not De Marco or Demarco. Who do you think you are, Larry Csonka?

Stacy Carter joined the VOC Wrestling Nation on 1360 WNJC Philadelphia and WORLDWIDE at http://vocnation.com to respond to comments made by Lisa “Ivory” Moretti in an interview on RingbellesOnline.com.

On getting her start in wrestling: “I started dating Jerry Lawler when I was 19 years old. I never wanted anything to do with wrestling. Jerry had to literally drag me out of the house to be part of Memphis wrestling as a ring announcer and ringside interviewer.”

On her first wrestling experience: “I eventually managed Jerry in Memphis.”

On getting her start in WWE: “One of the Divas screwed up a finish because she didn’t know what a ring apron was. Vince fired her and called Jerry, asking if I would come and work for (WWF), assuming that I knew my way around the ring because of my relationship with Jerry.”

Why Ivory has a problem with her: “I was in the locker room eating a Kit Kat. Ivory came up to me and said look at you; I have to work out everyday to look like this, and you can eat Kit Kats, not work out, and look like you do. She was very happy that she had to lose the belt to me.”

On the meaning of a championship belt: “Belts are meant to get wrestlers over who can’t get over on their own.”

On Ivory’s negative comments: “It’s part of her character as a person. I wouldn’t expect anything else from her.”

On why her and Jerry Lawler split: “I was 19 years old when we met. I needed to find out who I was as a person without Jerry in my life. We were together for 13 years and we just grew apart.

The entire interview is available at http://vocnation.com.

The Insane Clown Posse’s Juggalo Championship Wrestling was represented by Kevin Gill, who broke the HUGE news that Scott Hall would be making his return to the ring on May 26 at the JCW Show in Farmington, NM. Hall will be in the corner of Kevin Nash and Sean Waltman as they take on VOC Nation’s own Headbangers – Mosh and Thrasher.
