Wrestling’s 4R’s 10.08.12: WWE Smackdown, TNA IMPACT and WWE Main Event Reviewed

October 8, 2012 | Posted by Larry Csonka

How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. THREE if there is a PPV. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

Let’s rock…

Impact Wrestling 10.04.12 (LIVE):

QUICK RESULTS:
* Mr. Anderson pinned Gunner in 2:26 [2/6]
* Tara and Gail Kim beat Knockouts Champion Miss Tessmacher and ODB in 4:43 when Tara pinned Tessmacher [3/6]
* Television Champion Samoa Joe pinned Rob Van Dam in 4:32 to retain [4/6]
* Chavo Guererro pinned Kurt Angle in 6:33 [3/6]
* Douglas Williams beat X-Division Champion Zema Ion via reversed decision in 1:14 [2/6]
* Bully Ray beat Jeff Hardy and World Champion Austin Aries when he pinned Hardy to end the 3:36 shown (full time unknown as the match started during a commercial break) [3/6]

[If you’re not familiar with these ratings, it’s my own Personal Entertainment Factor. I use a scale of 1-6 (6, in honor of the number of sides TNA’s ring should have), so there’s no middle rating.]

  • THE RIGHT:
Mr. Anderson vs. Gunner: This match was solely to establish Anderson as the front runner for to be Sting’s partner at Bound For Glory, although it was great to see Gunner again! It was short and sweet, which was what it should be. The Kash attack made me glad, as it makes sense and furthered Anderson’s role on this show.

Samoa Joe vs. Rob Van Dam: This might be the first time Joe has gone over RVD clean. It’s a big win for Joe, but should be saved for a PPV match with some build. I also want to see TV title shots be earned, not handed out. This is why Devon’s reign became stale.

Chavo Guerrero vs. Kurt Angle: Both men were allowed to be themselves on this night, and I liked that. What I mean by that is the fact that they both had face and heel tendencies, which is great since both men are better heels than faces. Good match that furthered the Bound For Glory build.

Bully Ray vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Austin Aries: So is Austin Aries a heel now? They sure seem to be leaning that way. I really wish they were more creative than what they’re doing here. A competitive match between equals should be going down at Bound For Glory, not a match where the champion is trying to prove himself worthy of the challenger! Tonight’s match was good, but it was more about Bully Ray and Sting. TNA is doing a good job telling their story with Aries & Hardy—I just don’t like their story.

Joey Ryan and Al Snow promo: I liked their interaction, even if Joey Ryan is a little “screamy” for me in his promos. I know it’s just a Ron Burgundy thing, but it’s odd. Everything else is working for me, outside of the fact that this is on the Bound For Glory card. This should be on the 1-hour live broadcast before the PPV event, not on the PPV event itself.

Kurt Angle asking to team with Sting at Bound For Glory: This should be happening more. Kurt knows how important it is to beat Aces & Eights, so he’s willing to do anything to stop them. Everyone should be doing this. On this episode, only Mr. Anderson, Kurt Angle, Zema Ion and Bully Ray even referenced being Sting’s partner, and one guy was saying he wouldn’t do it if even asked.

  • PURGATORY:
Tara & Gail Kim vs. Miss Tessmacher and ODB: This was just an odd pairing on both sides. ODB makes some sense since she wrestled Tara last week. But Gail Kim is supposed to be aligned with Madison Rayne, who is just sitting at home, presumably shagging with Earl Hebner during the week.

Zema Ion vs. Douglas Williams: Ion looks like a bad ass by beating Williams so fast—too much so. Williams should be a top flight challenger for the title. Plus, we need a good Bound For Glory build for Ion, and we haven’t gotten that.

Bobby Roode, James Storm and King Mo promo: King Mo looks like a wrestler out there. Roode and Storm deserve better, though. They don’t need King Mo (why does a street fight need an enforcer, anyway?). What they need is a better stipulation and a build that doesn’t involve a soon-to-be Bellator fighter.

Aces & Eights torturing Joseph Park: I think TNA is simply taking too long to move this thing forward. It was cool when it was about random, attacks, but this “club house” business is making me wish we knew more and this group had already earned some in-ring time. Plus, I’m not excited about the tag match at Bound For Glory—I would have preferred a bigger match (8-man tag?).

  • THE WRONG:
    NOTHING

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
    NOTHING

    The 411

Small step back from last week—and the ratings showed it. TNA should be pulling out all the stops for Bound For Glory, and the most well-built match on the show is a triple threat tag team match. We have one more Impact Wrestling before Bound For Glory, and it better be a good one!

    SHOW RATING: 7

As a reminder, I will be going by the 411 scale…

    0 – 0.9: Torture
    1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
    2 – 2.9: Very Bad
    3 – 3.9: Bad
    4 – 4.9: Poor
    5 – 5.9: Not So Good
    6 – 6.9: Average
    7 – 7.9: Good
    8 – 8.9:Very Good
    9 – 9.9: Amazing
    10: Virtually Perfect

The Show’s Format: With the debut of WWE Main Event, I figure I will fit it into the column in a slightly different format. More of a quick thoughts breakdown if you will. First of all, I really liked the show’s format. It was a mix of the old syndicated ECW show (announcers in the ring) and the old Saturday Night’s Main event (match layout). Between that and the video focus and interviews related to the Punk vs. Sheamus match, I will freely admit that as opposed to other WWE programming, it felt new and fresh. And I feel that it was needed if you’re going to launch a new show in 2012. WWE Raw and Smackdown feel the same most weeks, so you cannot just do that style of show. Also, you just can’t do a simple format like Superstars, because then you’re just recreating that, and that is no good. This show had a distinct and different feel, and I enjoyed that aspect of the show.

CM Punk vs. Sheamus: As mentioned above, I really liked how they put the focus on the match with the interviews and video packages. The match wasn’t only the BIG MATCH on the show, but was also a “Champion vs. Champion” match, so it had to feel important. They did a good job of that. Punk and Sheamus delivered a good match as well, which got a lot of TV time, which it should have. They worked hard, and the finish not only protects Sheamus as world champion, but played into CM Punk’s persona as of late. As a wrestling match, I have no complaints. But I will say that I continue to find it ridiculous that they continue to blow Champion vs. champion matches on TV like this. I know it doesn’t bother some, but to me it makes no business sense at all to constantly give away matches that should in theory be making you money on PPV.

Tag Team Tournament Match: Santino and Zack Ryder vs. Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd closed out the show. As mentioned it was a tag team tournament match, and like some of the other tournament matches, it was short and didn’t really feel all that important. Santino and Zack are a fun tag team and I get why they got the win, but they feel so thrown together. Gabriel and Kidd work great together and aren’t used nearly as well as they should be. I really wish that they would have gotten the victory and moved onto a longer and more competitive match, but that just wasn’t in the plans. It was fine for the time given, but again, I feel that the tag tournament matches should be getting more time.

Overall Thoughts: Overall it is an easy to watch one hour show. We got one good match, one fine match and a fresh to current WWE format. The question is, how long will it last? Superstars started off good and with major stars, and then it dropped off and then they got cancelled. The same for ECW on SyFy. WWE reportedly doesn’t want to see another cancellation, and will work hard on keeping the star power there, but again, they also said that for Superstars at the beginning.

Also, WWE and ION wee quick to tout the success of the show’s ratings. The show brought in 1,394,000 viewers for Ion TV, which is a great number for the network, but can they actually sustain that? They threw out a Champion vs. Champion match, arguably the biggest match they can do with the regular roster stars, but you cannot do that every week. Also the first show tends to be a bigger number, due to the fact that people are curious and want to see what it is all about. With all of the current programming on TV and online (3-hour Raw, 2-hour Smackdown, 1-hour of Superstars, 1-hour of NXT and 30-minutes of Saturday Morning Slam), is there really going to be a huge audience left for another hour of programming?

I suppose only time will tell.

    Smackdown! 10.05.12:
    QUICK RESULTS
Tag Team Tournament Match: The Prime Time Players defeated R Truth and Kofi Kingston @ 4:18 via pin [**¼]
    – Ryback defeated Primo @ 2:52 via pin [NR]
    – Layla defeated Alicia Fox @ 3:35 via pin [**]
    – Wade Barrett killed a jobber @ 1:45 via pin [NR]
    – The Miz defeated Sheamus @ 6:23 via DQ [**½]
Non-Title Match: Daniel Bryan and Kane © defeated Alberto Del Rio and David Otunga @ 5:00 via pin [**¼]
    – Tensai defeated Big Show @ 2:10 via DQ [NR]
Non-Title Match: CM Punk © defeated Dolph Ziggler @ 10:04 via pin [***]

  • THE RIGHT:
Ryback defeated Primo: WWE kept the Ryback train going this week by having his kill Primo. Following Raw on Monday, people thought Ryback was “exposed” because he had issues getting Tensai up for the finish (even though he did it just fine on Smackdown). WWE did the smart thing here, putting Ryback against the smaller Primo, who would sell like a champ for the big guy. WWE looks like they want to do something with Ryback, I don’t know if they will push him to be the next big thing, or just a solid fan favorite killing the heels that they hate, but they seem to be handling him smartly and what they are doing with him is completely fine. I really want to see what they do next, but I think they have to pull the trigger on his next step soon; otherwise I will start to lose interest.

Layla defeated Alicia Fox: Nice little match here from Layla and Alicia Fox. They didn’t have too much time, but they had a plan and they stuck to it. While the fact that Alicia Fox is a face one week and a heel the next because they have no idea what to do with her bothers the hell out of me, I give them credit for doing the most with the time given. This match showed solid, clean and thoughtful work. Hey, two weeks in a row, see WWE, you can do this IF YOU WANT TO!

Daniel Bryan and Kane © defeated Alberto Del Rio and David Otunga: I will freely admit that when the whole segment started, I was not enthused. I hate to say, but David Otunga is channel changing-fast forward material for me. But I do have to admit that after that I enjoyed it. Del Rio mocking Randy Orton to play up last week’s attack leading to a tag team match all worked out well. In the tag team match, Daniel Bryan and Kane © defeated Alberto Del Rio and David Otunga in a fun tag team match. The tag team champions continue to win and continue to be entertaining, and I always appreciate that.

Tensai defeated Big Show: Now see, I liked this as opposed to the Miz vs. Sheamus match. Show fights Tensai (a virtual jobber now) for a few minutes, and then Sheamus runs down to say FUCK OFF FELLA and kick Tensai in the face. It was short, simple and clean, and helps the feud while not hurting Tensai, because as mentioned, he is a job guy right now. This was completely fine with me, and you know, didn’t make the IC Champion look like a goof.

  • PURGATORY:
The Prime Time Players defeated R Truth and Kofi Kingston: In the latest tag team tournament, The Prime Time Players defeated R Truth and Kofi Kingston. This was a fun, energetic and entertaining match for the time given on the show. The right team won, and the PTP have much more upside as a team, and R Truth and Kofi Kingston were only a bandage to help the division, they can go now and shore up the mid-card and secondary titles. The Prime Time Players are fun so far, O’Neil is the rough one still, but has been improving, and Young plays his role perfectly. My only complaint is something I have been complaining about for the entire tournament, and that is match length. I feel like I am watching the first year of the TNA Bound For Glory Tournament, and what I mean by that is that the matches get very little hype or time. I know that the company is rusty on booking an effecting tag team division, but you have to give these guys time to connect to the audience, and to make sure that the ones that lose do not come off as complete jobbers. Because they have to be looked at as viable teams for this division to actually work once Kane and Bryan lose the titles.

CM Punk © defeated Dolph Ziggler: The main event featured CM Punk defeating Dolph Ziggler in a good match. Punk had a great week of single matches between his Main Event match with Sheamus and the SD match with Ziggler. Ziggler also continues to deliver with the main players, and is proving why there is so much love for him these days. My problem continues to be with the booking of Dolph Ziggler. I hate that the WWE creative feels that the MITB deal means a clean slate. Dolph continues to lose almost any important match, and while he did have wins over Jericho and Orton, they are the few bright spots in a sky of bad booking. Is it that hard to book a heel effectively in WWE? Good match, bad booing, which is the one thing that they have complete control of. It isn’t that punk shouldn’t have won, it’s that Ziggler shouldn’t be put in these situations to lose all the time.

  • THE WRONG:
Wade Barrett killed a jobber: I have to say, I am concerned about Wade Barrett. They brought him back and I have no problem with the long burn, him taking people out and looking like a badass while they get something set for him to do. But this week it felt as if they took a step backwards with the “local talent” deal. This is how you start his comeback, kill non-contracted jobbers for weeks, move onto WWE jobbers, then into a program. Instead, they seem to have no idea what to do with him, no plan, no blueprints for the guy. Which is a shame, the injury, while unfortunate, was good in terms of erasing people’s memories of the bad booking Barrett had to live through. But now, now it seems as if the are missing an opportunity with him. I certainly hope they have a good plan for him, but this did nothing to make me think so. With as much stuff as they tossed onto this show, this could have easily been cut.

The Miz defeated Sheamus: I completely get the point of this segment, Sheamus looks to have things in hand, Show comes down to screw him out of a “victory” and to prove that he can drop anyone at any time with the big right hand. I get that and I think that is a fine angle, but not how they did it here. This makes it into the wrong simply for the fact that they decided to sacrifice the IC Champion, the Miz, for the segment. WWE fucking baffles me at times. You see Miz being sent on all of these media appearances because he represents the company so well, they give him the commentary job on Main Event (more exposure) and yet, as their IC Champion, they continue to take a dump on him. You have a locker room full of GOOFS that do nothing but job all the time. Pick one of them and send them out and do it like you did it with Show vs. Tensai (who I hate to say is essentially a jobber these days). The fact that they continue to run angles like this and book their secondary champions this way is why NO ONE cares about them.

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
    Nothing

    The 411

At the end of the day, I found this to be a completely average show. Some build to HIAC, some solid stuff overall, but with so much crammed onto the show, I never had time to get invested into everything. It felt as if they wrote for a three-hour show, realized it was Smackdown, and then chopped 4-6 minutes off of everything.

    SHOW RATING: 6.0

    0 – 0.9: Torture
    1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
