Wrestling’s 4R’s 10.15.12: WWE Smackdown, TNA Impact Wrestling & ROH on iPPV Reviewed

October 15, 2012 | Posted by Larry Csonka

How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. THREE if there is a PPV. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

Let’s rock…

* Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander defeated the Bravado Brothers via pin [***]
* Mike Bennett defeated Mike Mondo via pin [***]
* Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team defeated Rhett Titus & BJ Whitmer via pin [**½]
* Jay Lethal defeated Davey Richards via submission/referee stoppage [****¼]
* Tadarius Thomas defeated Rhino via pin [*]
* Adam Cole defeated Eddie Edwards via pin to retain the TV Title [***¾]
* Steve Corino and Jimmy Jacobs defeated The Briscoe Brothers via pin to retain the Tag Team Titles [***½]
* Kevin Steen defeated Michael Elgin via pin to retain the ROH Title [****¾]

Overall Thoughts: I have been very critical of the ROH product this year. Questionable booking, even more questionable choices with their talent and of course the horrible issues with iPPV. Anyone that follows, or followed at the case maybe, ROH knew that changes had to be made. It was announced that there were changes in creative, and while it all sounds good on the surface, TV had been taped and plans laid for the big end of the year show. So could ROH get their honor back in one show? I’d say no, because they have a lot to make up for, but they made a hell of an effort with the Glory by Honor iPPV.

The first half of the show was awesome, giving us a good and fun opener, an equally as good follow up, a solid tag bout that may have ended a lame duck feud and then that was followed by Lethal vs. Richards, which is some ways may be the “passing of the torch” in some people’s eyes. Many people like Jay Lethal, they think he is a fun performer, but he doesn’t have the biggest catalogue of great matches that some feel he should to be a main event player. With continued rumors of Richards exiting wrestling soon, the talk has been that Lethal will be one of the new “top guys,” and this match went a long way to making him look that way. Lethal delivered in a big time match, and the finish was great and definitive as Lethal beat the “MMA Guy” via submission. ROH was off to a great start with the first half of the show.

The second half had a lot to live up too, and I also felt that it delivered. It started off with an angle where Strong left the House of Truth, and refused to wrestle right after intermission. Rhino ended up facing Tadarius Thomas instead, and Thomas won a quick match, which was more about angle, but also a good win for him. Adam Cole defeated Eddie Edwards to retain his TV title in another strong match, which again made these guys look good. They have been working hard and delivering when the booking allows, and I have no complaints about the match. Steve Corino and Jimmy Jacobs defeated The Briscoe Brothers to retain the tag team titles in another good match. Corino and Jacobs as “SCUM” has worked well together, and we all know that the Briscoes are simply awesome.

And then we came to the main event, Kevin Steen defending his ROH Title against Michael Elgin. Elgin has been on the radar for some time, but really broke out WM weekend with his match against Davey Richards. These two had a tremendous main event match, seriously tremendous, a real battle with both guys busting their ass to deliver what fans paid for. Elgin had the crowd biting on his big near falls at the end, and Steen had to use a package piledriver off of the ropes to finally put down his latest challenger. This was an awesome match, and one you should track down. Following the match Elgin got respect for the effort, and as he tried to soak in the reaction, Strong came out to deliver the sick kick. So we have that to look forward too. But that wasn’t all, because Kevin Steen was delivered a package after his victory. Nigel McGuinness then stated that he was personally to deliver Steen the package, in the event that he retained the title. Steen opened the package to see…

El Generico’s mask. The crowd loved it, and did the “OLE, OLE OLE OLE” chant to end the show. Now, the PPV was excellent overall, the live stream was really good overall. ROH knows that they did damage to the product, and they knew that they had to try and turn it around. Delivering an error free iPPV is a start, delivering an iPPV full of good to great wrestling is a very good start. Unfortunately for ROH it will take more than one iPPV like this to repair the damage that they have done, but delivering a show like this with the addition of the El Generico tease at the end was what they needed to do. Will it last? I hope so, but on this night, Glory By Honor was easily one of the best PPVs of the year. 8.5

Impact Wrestling 10.11.12 (LIVE):

QUICK RESULTS:
* World Champion Austin Aries pinned James Storm in 7:15 after interference from Bobby Roode lead to the Brainbuster [4/6]
* Hernandez pinned AJ Styles in 3:55 with his version of The Pounce [3/6]
* World Tag Team Champions (of the World) Christopher Daniels and Kazarian beat Sting and Bully Ray by disqualification in 10:05 when Ray powerbombed Daniels through a table [6/6]
* Knockouts Champion Miss Tessmacher pinned Gail Kim in 5:15 with the Atomic Pancake [2/6]
* Jeff Hardy beat Bobby Roode by disqualification in 16:20 following a low blow [3/6]

[If you’re not familiar with these ratings, it’s my own Personal Entertainment Factor. I use a scale of 1-6 (6, in honor of the number of sides TNA’s ring should have), so there’s no middle rating.]

  • THE RIGHT:
Christopher Daniels & Kazarian vs. Sting & Bully Ray: This match, simply, was awesome. Best match of the show and one of the most entertaining matches of 2012. Bully Ray, in one match, turned 100% face in a major way. It will likely be undone at Bound For Glory, and that will be equally awesome. Daniels and Kazarian were at their chickenshit heel best, and everything clicked. Sting’s “Bully…GET THE TABLES!” was classic, and Bully sold it perfectly.

Austin Aries vs. James Storm: Almost a “what could have been” scenario since Storm was the frontrunner in the Bound For Glory Series from Day One. Great match with a very understandable (and reasonable) finish.

Hernnadez vs. AJ Styles: I know some were upset about Hernandez using a Pounce/Shoulder-block to win the match. But would you want to take a Border Toss? That’s one of the most dangerous moves in wrestling. The match itself was a good one while it lasted, it told the story of the Bound For Glory tag team title match. Plus, if there was ever a time to push Hernandez, now is that time.

Jeff Hardy vs. Bobby Roode: Great match that was a little long. Normally I disagree with the internet consensus, but I agree with the notion that Hardy should have had an extended squash match to look stronger going into the PPV. Robbie E would have been a good choice there. Roode was booked perfectly, losing by DQ and pulling out a chair—exactly what he should be doing headed into a street fight. I would have had King Mo stop him from using the chair, but that’s a higher level of continuity that you just can’t always ask for (apparently).

Hulk Hogan, Sting, Christopher Daniels, Kazarian & Bully Ray promo: Great promo by all five men. Daniels, especially, as he applied some amazing logic to try to get out of their tag team title match by putting Kurt Angle into the Aces & Eights match. Bully Ray played that perfectly, and it leads to the best match of the night.

Zema Ion promo: If you’re going to build a match using just one segment, this is how you do it. while I don’t recommend building matches this way, they made the most out of it and then some. Ion sold RVD’s announcement (and kick) with perfection, and they turned a negative (the X-Division’s recent use) into a positive.

Brooke Hogan’s backstage interactions with Taryn Terrell and Tara: For everyone who claimed that Brooke Hogan was a terrible pick for the Knockouts leader, she’s done a great job. Outside of falling on her ass when she introduced Taryn several weeks ago, she’s nailed the role perfectly. Keeping her backstage allows her to use her normal voice, and she employs a certain level of authority that is unseen from most authority figures. Hell, she’s a better General Manager than her own father at this point!

Samoa Joe & Magnus backstage: I would have liked a Joe or Magnus match, but the backstage interaction was great. Magnus is so awesome in his role that I fully expect him to be a heel world champion within three years. This is a guy TNA can build around for years to come.

  • PURGATORY:
Miss Tessmacher vs. Gail Kim: TNA needs to face it—Tessmacher simply isn’t that good in the ring. She can’t be used to build the division. She’s beautiful, she’s got some charisma, but she can’t carry the load of weekly wrestling matches. She’s perfect for the near dead Knockouts Tag Team Division. This match showed that, as Tessmacher took most of the offense before winning. She’s not strong enough to hit her own finisher with any consistency, leaving most of that up to her opponent. All of this showed during this match.

Aces& Eights Clubhouse segment: These segments are growing pointless, and something huge needs to happen with Aces & Eights at Bound For Glory. It’s far too much Sons of Anarchy and not enough pro wrestling for me right now.

  • THE WRONG:
    NOTHING

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
Austin Aries turns heel to end the show: What? You do this in the final segment before Bound For Glory? Is it that hard to build a strong face champion that is challenged by a strong face challenger? Unless Aries is suddenly the Ace in Aces & Eights (which would really push me to my personal suspension of disbelief limit), he can’t win at Bound For Glory.

    The 411

A step up in quality this week for TNA, but this felt like it should have aired last week. But the ending fell flat for me. Austin Aries is suddenly a heel, and they crammed a month of build into one segment—terrible job. I took away from the rest of the show, and completely shows their hand for Sunday’s world title match. Sorry TNA, I expected more out of the build to Aries-Hardy. This was a 7.9 show that is dropped to a 6.9 completely based on the final segment.

    SHOW RATING: 6.9

As a reminder, I will be going by the 411 scale…

    0 – 0.9: Torture
    1 – 1.9: Extremely Horrendous
    2 – 2.9: Very Bad
    3 – 3.9: Bad
    4 – 4.9: Poor
    5 – 5.9: Not So Good
    6 – 6.9: Average
    7 – 7.9: Good
    8 – 8.9:Very Good
    9 – 9.9: Amazing
    10: Virtually Perfect

    Smackdown! 10.12.12:
    QUICK RESULTS
Non-Title Match Sheamus defeated Tensai @ 4:00 via pin [**]
    – The Band (Heath Slater and Jinder Mahal) w/Drew McIntyre defeated Team COBRO (Santino Marella and Zack Ryder) @ 4:00 via pin [**]
    – Kane defeated Dolph Ziggler @ 10:00 via DQ [**½]
    – Big Show defeated Kofi Kingston @ 2:00 via pin [NR]
    – Sin Cara defeated Damien Sandow @ 2:30 via pin [NR]
    – Alberto Del Rio defeated Daniel Bryan @ 10:00 via submission [**¾]

  • THE RIGHT:
Sports Science – Sheamus vs. Tensai: Smackdown opened up with Smackdown GM Booker T bringing out Sheamus and The Big Show for some sports science. The idea of the segment was to see what was mote powerful, the brogue kick or the WMD. Some people seemed to not like this, but I did for the simply fact that they have been pushing hard that the main attraction of the match was not just to see who could hit their finisher first, but if the brogue kick was as deadly as they have made it. Show and Sheamus isn’t exactly an enthralling match for me, but I like the angle on the finishers. We know Show can knock out anyone, and the one time Sheamus tried to brogue kick Show, he was stopped. So they did the sports science, Show was shown to have more power and that is fine. Tensai would come out to attack Sheamus as payback for last week, and that gave us our opener. Sheamus and Tensai have worked well together in the past, and even though the match was shorter than previous matches, they did just fine in delivering what they wanted. Sheamus gets the clean victory over a large opponent, with the brogue kick as we head towards Hell in a Cell. This was a perfectly fine way to open the show.

Kane vs. Dolph Ziggler: This match was part of the fallout from Raw, and set up from a TOUT by Dolph Ziggler, because that’s how we make matches in 2012. The two had a really fun 10-minute match, which really shouldn’t be a surprise, as Ziggler is always delivering these days, and Kane keeps working hard and has been having good outings. So we had a good match, and thankfully Ziggler did not eat another pin, he got DQ’d for using the MITB case on Kane. Kane fought off Ziggler, just as Daniel Bryan ran in and then, he claimed that he SAVED KANE. This led to the regular fun and tomfoolery from the tag team champions, arguing over who is the tag team champions and who did the saving. They also took the time to destroy Matt Striker, who decided it was an appropriate time to conduct an in ring interview. He’ll think better of that the next time.

  • PURGATORY:
Daniel Bryan vs. Alberto Del Rio, Randy Orton’s Return: The main event of the show was Daniel Bryan vs. Alberto Del Rio, which was set up by the wacky comedy segments searching for Randy Orton. I liked the match for the most part, a strong 10-minute outing that saw Del Rio win via submission. Not really a fan of half of the tag team champions losing clean that way, especially when they set up earlier that Bryan didn’t want the help of Kane, no matter what. They easily could have run a DQ or count out or something, leading to Bryan and Kane arguing on the ramp, and then shooting the closing angle that they did. Between the comedy of the Orton hunt and the loss for Bryan like that, I just can’t see it being completely right. It wasn’t horrible, but they could have done it better. Del Rio’s promo was solid afterwards, and the sneak in by Orton was fun and led to him laying out Ricardo with the RKO on a table. We’ll see where the feud goes between these two, but it is a questionable on to make. Del Rio got the “Lex Luger” treatment in his feud with Sheamus, and Orton is sitting on two suspensions, and isn’t exactly the guy they will push hard for a major title. Again, we’ll see how it goes.

The Band vs. Team COBRO: In a typical Smackdown tag match, the Band defeated Team COBRO in about four minutes. All four guys worked hard, and it was enjoyable as a wrestling match. This one comes down to personal preference; I just am not feeling The Band. Slater is fun in a goofy way, Mahal is a waste, and McIntyre should be used much better than he has been. But I am not feeling them as a group. I am glad that they are getting TV time, and they could be used in the tag team division if they wish, but as for now, they aren’t exactly making me want to watch them.

Sin Cara vs. Damien Sandow: Sin Cara battled Damien Sandow in a preview of Monday’s tag team tournament finals. It was fine for the time given, and Cara walked away with the victory. My big problem is beating Sandow like this. Up and too this point he had lost to Sheamus, the WORLD CHAMPION, in an ultra competitive match. But here, here he loses to Sin Cara in under three minutes. I don’t care that they played it off as a fluke style victory, it shouldn’t have happened that way. With Rey Mysterio not on the show, they had the easy booking tool of a DQ finish and the Rhodes Scholars beating down a defenseless Sin Cara. The heels come off like dicks, no one loses going into the important match on Monday and then you can play the sympathy card on Monday, “Is Sin Cara 100%? Can he trust Rey Mysterio considering he was left alone on Friday?” So much they could have done there, but they unfortunately refused to do so.

  • THE WRONG:
The Search For Randy Orton…COMEDY!: You know, the return of Randy Orton was supposed to have a serious feel. Del Rio had attacked and beaten him down, and now Orton was coming back for his revenge. So instead of keeping the serious tone, WWE decided that we needed COMEDY to make this feud feel more important. We got Ricardo being funny; playing with Hornswogle and Santino, and it was shit. You took me from mildly interested in Del Rio s. Orton to not giving a shit in about 120-minutes. Thanks WWE.

  • THE RIDICULOUS:
Big Show vs. Kofi Kingston: And this is the shit that absolutely pisses me off. Yes, Big Show is challenging for the World Title at Hell in a Cell, and yes he needs to look dominant. But you have how many goofs backstage that could have come out here to take the ass beating, but instead, instead, you use Kofi Kingston. Kofi and Truth break up on Monday, he does the big angle with Miz that night as well. Kofi then appears on WWE Main Event, wins and challenges Miz to an IC Title match. Miz accepts, tries to be a dick and attack Kofi and gets laid out for his troubles. Following all of that work, WHY WOULD YOU MAKE KOFI LOOK LIKE A JOBBER ON SMACKDOWN? I don’t care about the lame Miz promo either, Kofi looked like complete dog shit, not a title challenger. I have been saying it for years, THIS is why no one cares about the mid-card titles and THIS is what there are no mid-card guys “ready to step up,” because no one cares about them because anytime they have to step up in competition, they are booked to be a complete joke.

    The 411

Another week and another average Smackdown. We had some good wrestling, but the poor booking continues. It’s not a bad show, but it also isn’t anything you need to rush out to see.

    SHOW RATING: 6.0
