Wrestling’s 4R’s 10.22.12: WWE Smackdown & TNA Impact Wrestling Reviewed
How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. THREE if there is a PPV. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

Impact Wrestling 10.18.12 (LIVE):
QUICK RESULTS:
* Television Champion Samoa Joe forced Robbie E to submit 2:44 to retain [3/6]
* ODB pinned Knockouts Champion Tara in 3:11 of a non-title match [2/6]
* Tag Team Champions Chavo Guerrero, Jr & Hernandez beat Kid Kash & Gunner in 4:54 of a non-title match [3/6]
* Kurt Angle pinned Christopher to win a three-way match that also included AJ Styles in 6:52 for the right to be one of the potential challengers for the World Championship during next week’s Championship Thursday [4/6]
* Sting beat Devon by disqualification in 11:04 following Aces & Eights interference [3/6]
[If you’re not familiar with these ratings, it’s my own Personal Entertainment Factor. I use a scale of 1-6 (6, in honor of the number of sides TNA’s ring should have), so there’s no middle rating.]
Samoa Joe vs. Robbie E: Good match and as a former champion Robbie E makes sense as a challenger. It also seems to set up Joe vs. Robbie T for next week (or the week after), which also makes sense. This is a good, basic win for your television champion with some easy storytelling to set up his next good, basic win.
Chavo Guerrero Jr & Hernandez vs. Kid Kash & Gunner: Kash & Gunner was quite undervalued as a tag team, they have some serious potential. Chavo & Hernandez are way over in the Impact Zone—their title win should have come on a live Impact Wrestling rather than during Bound For Glory.
Hogan & Bully Ray Backstage: Hogan’s distrust of Ray and Ray as a heel working face are really clicking. I don’t know if it will lead to a Bully Ray turn towards Aces & Eights, but I am actually hoping it doesn’t.
Christopher Daniels backstage promo: Daniels is hilarious in this promo. Referring to his delicious beverages, taking a drink and saying “God, that tastes good…” is perfect. I already miss his team with Kazarian, though—hopefully they’re not done.
AJ Styles vs. Kurt Angle vs. Christopher Daniels: These guys aren’t capable of having a bad match together (outside of that Bound For Glory 2011 debacle). I don’t want AJ to turn heel, because he’s ready to be the company’s top face. The match here was great.
Matt Morgan & Joey Ryan run into Hulk Hogan backstage: Morgan being involved with Hogan will only help his progression. And Ryan being associated with Morgan will only help his character.
James Storm promo: Great promo by Storm, and good work by Bobby Roode. The only drawback is that we might see them wrestle again. I am not sure they can top their Bound For Glory match with a rematch in November.
Jeff Hardy’s Celebration: Hardy’s celebration was too far removed from the Bound For Glory pay-per-view to mean anything. But I did like Austin Aries reason for not using his rematch yet. It allows Aries and Hardy to do other things and revisit their feud down the road.
Sting vs. Devon: This match struck me as a “Legends Match” and not as a “two guys at the top of the card” match. It was a logical step in the Aces & Eights storyline—I just didn’t like the way the pairing came off that much (especially as my main event).
Tara vs. ODB: Tara and ODB are both capable wrestlers at worst, great at best. But their match was about Tara being obsessed at Jesse and ODB talking to Eric Young on the phone. This is stupid, and there were much better ways to use the time given to this match. TNA would have been better off with Tara introducing Jesse before her Bound For Glory match against Tessmacher, and then losing when she was distracted. Then we can have Tara & Jesse feud with ODB & Young while Tessmacher actually worries about defending her title.
Nothing
Not a whole lot of advancement in the follow-up to Bound For Glory. The night after WrestleMania, the WWE basically celebrates the event, debuts a new talent and has a big angle at the end. THE THREE MAN BAND: I haven’t been the biggest supporter of the Three Man Band deal, but for this week, I think that they overall have done a good job. They are getting some promo time, they now have new and matching gear to play up the gimmick, and Slater is winning. This week he defeated Brodus Clay in an acceptable bout, thanks to the interference of his band mates. I don’t expect them to be anything big, but they are giving these guys something to do, and some TV time to try and succeed. For those complaining about the booking of Clay, WWE missed their window with him. He peaked, but they just didn’t so anything of note with him. They have started to strip him down (no dancing in the ring entrance this week) and are using him to get others over. Those are the breaks kids.
ANTONIO KEEPS ROLLING: Antonio Cesaro © defeated Ted DiBiase this week on Smackdown, in a short, but entertaining match. I have been talking for what seems like forever about the secondary champions needing to be booked better, and as of late, Cesaro has been picking up wins and looking good. I also like the little segments where Cesaro mocks “Americana,” as it fits his snobby European persona. I do feel that they need to get him locked into a feud and soon, but for now, picking up wins on both Raw and Smackdown are good things.
I’M THE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS!: Daniel Bryan and Kane are one of the most entertaining acts in all of pro wrestling, and a welcomed fresh take on he usually boring and predictable tag team partners that do not get along deal. The match was made in the opening segment, and was a fun outing. As mentioned, Kane and Bryan work their angle perfectly, and it worked very well against Ziggler’s cocky heel persona and Show’s pissed off giant deal/ While not a spectacular match, it was fun and played to everyone’s strengths, and was a fine addition to the show. The tag team champions (NO, I AM THE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS) scored the victory, but when they went into their usual bickering, The Rhodes Scholars made another appearance to beat them down. Fun match, the champions looked strong, and the next possible challengers looked good as they got the upper hand. There was only one thing wrong with the whole segment, which I will discuss below…
RHODES SCHOLARS LOOK STRONG HEADING TO TOURNAMENT FINALS: Speaking of the Rhodes Scholars, before the tag team champions were in action (YES, I AM THE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS!), the new team was in action. While Rey Mysterio’s illness and time off has caused some re-writing to be done, I feel that it has been a blessing in disguise for the Rhodes Scholars. They got to appear on Raw, winning against the Colons, in what was a fun little match that allowed commentary to discuss the fact that the Rhodes Scholars were preparing for Rey and Sin Cara by facing another highflying team. On Smackdown they essentially did the same thing, this time facing Kidd and Gabriel. While not a particularly long or great match, it was fine for what it was, which was to make the Scholars appear to be viable challengers. Rhodes and Sandow have gelled very well together, and I hope that the tag match with Rey and Cara gets some time, because I think that the to teams will have a good match, one I am looking forward too.
OPENING TALKY SEGMENT WE ALWAYS GET: I may have talked about this in the past, but I am not a big fan of the show opening interview segment. I know why they do it, but it now appears to be a crutch that shows use 95% or more of the time. Sure they set up matches and advance angles, but when I see the show opening interview, unless I am recapping, I tend to fade off and not pay attention, because it bores me. Hell, Miz even made the joke when Booker came out that he knew what he would do, even if Booker did change it up. Sure it set up two matches, but personally, it is boring me.
ORTON DEFEATS MIZ: Following the opening talky bit, the first match of the show was the Miz vs. Randy Orton. Like most matches on the show, it was a solid encounter, but nothing that you really had to go out of your way to see. What also took away from it was the fact that they decided to heavily focus on Del Rio in hi luxury box, even ignoring the match at times. It is part of the story but when you start to ignore the match and work in the ring, you’re doing it wrong. Orton won to look strong heading into HIAC, and then challenged Del Rio to come to the ring, but he refused. But I was not a fan of booking the match, because it seems as if they really hurt the Miz this week. He loses to Kofi on Monday and got the fuck kicked out of him, which led to Wednesday’s title loss to Kofi. And then, on Smackdown he announces he will use his rematch clause to fight Kofi for the title, so of course they feel it perfect to have Miz lose AGAIN. They really should have taken the time to book Miz against a mid-card scrub and have him brutally beat him down, and then announce his rematch for the title. Instead, they just advanced the fact that he is a big loser right now, which I do not feel is the right way to go. Orton should have won a match on Smackdown, but it should have been against someone other than the Miz.
LUMBERJACK MAIN EVENT: Smackdown’s main event was another match between Barrett and Sheamus. That is good on one hand, because their first two matches have been good stuff. They feel a bit fresh, a bit raw, and pretty physical; but different from the usual WWE matches on TV. I liked seeing these guys on display in the main event, even if it didn’t make sense to make a lumberjack match so Big Show couldn’t run n and ruin it, only to make him a lumberjack. Seriously, does NO ONE do quality control when crafting the stories? But here is my problem with it, and again, this may just be me, but it is how I feel. While the series of matches between Barrett and Sheamus have been fun, I strongly feel that the WWE burnt through matches for no reason, when this likely could and probably will be a future feud over the world title. Add into the fact that they have really dropped the ball with Barrett’s return by not giving him a worthwhile program and allowing him to flounder when they had a gift given to them with the injury and fresh return, and that is my problem. Well, not my only problem, but I will discuss that below…
LAYLA vs. NATALYA: Simply put, not a good match. It was short, uneven, and had obvious edits in it. I am a huge fan of women’s wrestling, or should I say good women’s wrestling, and this simply wasn’t it. Oh well, maybe next week.
YOU ARE RUINING DOLPH ZIGGLER: Seriously, it is now embarrassing how badly they are making Dolph Ziggler look. This week he got submitted in the tag team match, and then, after the main event, was made to look like a complete bitch as Big Show knocked him out. And I don’t want to hear from all of the brainwashed people telling me that it will be fine as soon as he cashes in. MTB doesn’t wipe the slate clean. They have a guy in Ziggler who is good and constantly improving, and most importantly, is over. But the poor booking of him is just a joke at this point, and I honestly do not see how people could actually care if and when he wins the world title.
This week’s show was fine overall, but nothing you have to see. I hate saying that, but the matches were nothing special, the angles felt by the numbers and some of the booking remains very questionable in my eyes. Again, not bad, but if you missed it, save your time and watch something else. SHOW RATING: 6.0 0 – 0.9: Torture |

Thoughts From The Man Cave: UFC 153 Fallout: Samer Kadi joins the Man Cave to review UFC 153 in a podcast that lasts way too long, but the ending is totally worth it. We’ll look back on this past weekend’s main card, spending 50 minutes on Anderson Silva vs. Stephan Bonnar, which lasted less than five minutes. Then we spend another 50 minutes on the rest of the main card, which was pretty fantastic start to finish before quickly talking about the prelim fights. Finally, we end with me doing karaoke. Bad Movie Review Club: Nude Nuns With Big Guns: 411’s Sean Comer joins the Man Cave and 411’s Jeremy Lambert for the October edition of the Bad Movie Review Club. This month we tackle Nude Nuns With Big Guns, which is as awesome as the title sounds. We’ll review the movie scene-by-scene, spot the Robert Rodriguez rip-offs, and even pitch Nude Nuns With Big Guns 2. 411 Ground and Pound Radio: Check out the latest edition of the 411 Ground and Pound Radio show! The show was recorded live on Sunday morning at 11AM ET, with your host Larry Csonka. 411 contributors Alex Rella, Jeffrey Harris, Patrick Mullin and Samer Kadi served as the panel of experts for the Week. On the show, the guys discussed the declining ratings for The Ultimate Fighter, the general lack of interest in the show, and what kind of things the UFC could replace it with in the future.
